The five commandmants of beauty BY TOM F E R R A R O Sport Psychologist All mankind is in love with beauty. From the greatest poet to the youngest child, we all are enraptured by the beautiful. John Keats, the wonderful English poet gave us the lines you see above. But you needn’t be a poet to appreciate the beauty that is all around us. My first clinical job after my graduation from SUNY Stony Brook was as a psychologist at just Kids Early Childhood Learning Center in Suffolk County. One summer morning as I walked to the front door of the building I noticed a 4-year-old girl standing on the curb holding her mother’s hand. As the cars drove up to the school to drop off the kids an exotic looking Mercedes Benz pulled up. The young girl noticed the car, turned to her mother and said “Wow, Mommy that car has nice lines.” I realized right then that kids were a lot more sophisticated and aware then I had realized. This 4-year-old child already new

things about aesthetics and beauty. Given the fact that artists, children and every adult alive seems obsessed with beauty it is a wonder that so little is written about its value, how to find it and what to learn about it. So here I will offer my knowledge, as limited as it may be, on how to acquire your fair share of beauty. This does not mean that you will either marry Jennifer Aniston or become her but it may lead you in the right direction. The Five Commandments of Beauty: 1) Thou shalt learn how to smile: Beauty is only skin deep. The best way to become more beautiful is to possess an easy smile. A good example of this is Suhwa Kim the owner of Aroma Nails in Williston Park. I find her utterly beautiful for the simple reason that she always smiles and has a twinkle in her eyes when she sees me. A smile is a very powerful thing. 2) Thou shalt stay fit: I spoke with a middle aged woman today at my gym. She is about 5’2” and may weigh about 100 pounds. She has the look of a mara-

Smiling always adds beauty to a face. thon runner and was gorgeous. In preparation for this piece I asked her why she exercises. She told me she likes to feel healthy. I remarked “Well you may like to feel healthy but you’ve also acquired some natural beauty on your running path.” 3) Thou shalt be prepared to spend money: When I was very young my brother once told me “Beauty costs a lot of money.” He was right. Let me give you a good example from the world of golf. Anyone who joins a golf club on Long Island will tell you that their course is a thing of beauty. The grass is perfectly mowed and healthy. The trees line the fair-

ways just so. There are babbling brooks that meander about and the sounds of birds are always in the air. The ultimate in golf course design and beauty may be Richard Nixon’s favorite course called St. Cloud Golf Club outside of Paris. They have white swans that swim past you in the brooks that surround the putting green. The cost of maintaining a typical country club golf course is well over $1 million per year which includes payroll for a staff of up to 20 assistant greens keepers and gardeners. Like my brother said “Beauty cost money.” 4) Thou shalt learn to trust the experts: As an example Suhwa Kim has a team which includes hair stylists, nail stylists, massage therapists and make-up artists. If you want to get pretty go to those who know how. I used to do lots of TV work and every guest has to go to a makeup room where they have artists who put on the makeup and fix your hair. 5) Thou shalt be patient: To create beauty you must realize it takes time. I am always amazed at how long it takes my wife to put on makeup but the results do pay ADVERTORIAL

off in spades. One of my favorite plays is the Steven Sondheim masterpiece “Sunday in the Park with George.” The play is about the French pointillist George Seurat who was painting a scene on the Island of La Grand Jatte. Songs like “Finishing the Hat,” “Sunday” and “Its Hot Up” Here all express the painful patience it took by both model and artist as they attempted to create something beautiful. Yet another example of patience is when you visit the island of Capri off the Amalfi Coast. Capri is the most beautiful place on earth and the reason it has such majestic views, breathtaking streets and mindboggling gardens is because the emperors of Rome have been investing fortunes in this island for more than 2,000 years. Now that’s patience. So there they are. If you want more beauty in your life you would do well to embrace these five truths. Smile more, stay fit, invest in the effort, use beauty experts and be patient in all of your efforts. If you do these things I guarantee you will not only look better but also be happier as well.

Personalized medicine may be the future of healthcare

W

hen a person feels ill, his or her doctor may assess any symptoms and then prescribe a particular medication to treat or alleviate those symptoms. Doctors prescribe medications hoping to treat sickness, but sometimes prescriptions fall short, leaving some to wonder if prescription medications could be customized more for individual needs? The science is already here. Making specialized drugs is not a new concept. Prior to the rise of drug manufacturing companies, early pharmacists routinely customized ingredients. According to Professional Compounding Centers of America, customized medications are created through a process known as pharmacy compounding, which is defined as the art and science of preparing personalized medications for patients. Specialized pharmacists take a practitioner’s prescription and mix individual ingredients together in the exact dosage and strength required. Compounding may be done to change the form of the medication from a pill to a liquid or to remove a certain additive or ingredient, such as gluten, that might cause an allergic reaction. The American Pharmacists Association says that compounding also can be used to flavor a medication in an effort to make it more palatable. Compounded drugs can be just as safe as mass-produced prescriptions.

And thanks to their tailor-made formulas, compounded medications also may help people avoid side effects and other adverse reactions. Compounding gives physicians flexibility in regard to how to best help their patients. Compounding is done in hospital pharmacies and other healthcare facilities. There also are thousands of community-based pharmacies in the United States that specialize in compounding services. Pharmacists in these facilities spend all of their time making special preparations. All pharmacists and pharmacies engaged in compounding are subject to oversight by both federal and state authorities. On November 27, 2013, Congress amended the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act by enacting the Drug Quality and Security Act to ensure that compounded drugs are produced in accordance with applicable federal requirements. The National Association of Pharmacy Regulatory Authorities helps to oversee compounding in Canada. Preparations of products are subject to the Food and Drug Act and Regulations, Good Manufacturing Practice guidelines, and inspection by Health Canada. Pharmaceutical compounding may not be new, but it is increasingly relied on to create the best formulations for individual patients.

Treatments for Alzheimer’s disease continue to evolve

A

lzheimer’s disease is one of the most prevalent types of dementia in the world, affecting an estimated 35.6 million people all over the globe, and that number is expected to double in 20 years. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America estimates that as many as 5.1 million Americans may be living with Alzheimer’s disease. Australian company Actinogen Medical says Alzheimer’s is Australia’s second biggest killer. According to a 2012 study commissioned by the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, 747,000 Canadians were living with cognitive impairment, which included, but was not limited to, dementia. People with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia may experience a decline in mental function severe enough to reduce their ability to perform everyday activities. Some of the cognitive

functions that may be impaired include memory, communication and language, ability to pay attention, reasoning and judgement, emotional control, and social behavior. There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, nor is there an effective long-term way to prevent potential mental decline. However, that has not stopped scores of researchers and medical teams that continue to study the efficacy of different drugs and therapies. The following are some of the more promising options in the works.

Leukine A safety trial on the drug Leukine already is underway at the Colorado University Anschutz Medical Campus. “We found so far that Leukine is safe in people with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Huntington Potter, the director of Alzheimer’s research at the university. “That means it doesn’t have the side effects that so many other Alzheimer’s drugs have had,

which are swelling in the brain and bleeding into the brain.” Leukine has been successful in removing the plaque or amyloid along the outside of nerve cells in the brain of mice. Researchers do not know the exact mechanism for removal, but the drug is working and working quickly. Leukine also may be helping the brain repair itself. The Alzheimer’s Association has donated $1 million toward financing the costs of the next phase of this trial.

Insulin Neurologists at Rush University Medical Center are testing a type of insulin that is inhaled through a nasal spray to see if it improves cognition and memory function in people with mild cognitive impairment. “There is growing evidence that insulin carries out multiple functions in the brain and that poor regulation of insulin may contribute to the development of Alzheimer’s disease,” said Dr. Neelum Aggarwal, a neurologist at Rush and the lead

investigator of the study. The 18-month clinical trial will study the nasal spray versus a placebo in 275 adults between the ages of 55 and 85.

Xanamem Australian researchers at Actinogen Medical have begun trials of a new drug called Xanamem. More than 170 patients with mild dementia in Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom will take part in the placebo-controlled 12-week trial. The medicine blocks the stress hormone cortisol in order to improve mental function for those with dementias. In 2015, an Edinburgh University study of mice showed reducing cortisol in the brain improved their memory and decreased the number of Alzheimer’s-associated amyloid plaques in the brain. Researchers continue to work as they seek a successful, long-term option for treating or preventing Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.

Understanding protein shakes P rotein powder shakes once were consumed almost exclusively by professional body builders or gym rats looking to increase their muscle mass. But long gone are the days of finding protein shake supplies in specialty fitness stores. Nowadays protein shakes are mainstream and big business for the fitness and diet industry. Although protein shakes are not a magic solution for six-pack abs or overnight weight loss, they can — when used correctly — make a healthy addition to a fitness and nutrition regimen. With that said, they may not be right for everyone. But it’s important for individuals to weigh the pros and cons of protein products and work with their physicians to find the right regimen for their age, gender, body type, and desired goals. Protein shakes have a lot of positive attributes. Convenient and portable, protein shakes are formulated with readily available, highly digestible protein to fuel the body post-workout. Protein is essential for building muscle and overall body strength and is an important building block of bones, muscles, cartilage, skin, and blood. It also helps make hormones, enzymes and other body chemicals. Protein shakes deliver whey or casein protein in a convenient way. And because protein shakes tend to be concentrated, many people can consume the recommended level of protein for their activity type without having to eat many calorie-laden meals. Shakes also can be filling and help people feel

satiated longer. Some people substitute protein shakes for meals once per day, eliminating a potentially calorie-laden meal in favor of a lowcalorie shake. While protein shakes can be beneficial, the International Society of Sports Nutrition recommends that those who exercise should try to reach their protein requirements via whole foods. Protein shakes are not complete meals; therefore, they may create nutritional deficits if they are routinely used as meal substitutes. The Mayo Clinic offers that protein shakes often fall short of supplying significant amounts of carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. They’re also generally missing naturally occurring fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals. Protein shakes may be flavored with artificial ingredients or sweeteners which can be fine when consumed occasionally, but may not be recommended as a long-term meal replacement. Too much protein may not be a good thing, either. The U.S. Department of Health recommends that adults should not consume more than twice the recommended daily intake of protein, which is 55.5 g for men and 45 g for women. Protein shakes often have 20 to 40 g of protein per serving. So it’s easy to see how consumers of protein shakes may consume more than their recommended amount of protein. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, consistently exceeding daily protein

requirements can lead to weight gain, high blood cholesterol, an elevated risk for heart disease, and kidney complications. Also, The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine states that consuming too much protein can raise a person’s risk of developing cancer, osteoporosis and kidney stones. Protein shakes are convenient forms of a nutrient that active bodies need. When used in moderation and as part of an overall healthy eating plan, they should be safe. PARK AVENUE PLASTIC SURGEON CONTINUES TO PERFECT THE IPANEMA TUMMY TUCK® – TEN YEARS & STILL GOING STRONG! A Safer, Less Invasive Tummy Tuck for Mommy Makeovers . . . and More “Tall and tan and young and lovely,” the proverbial beauty strolling Ipanema Beach in the 1960s song still represents an icon to many women struggling to get back in shape after pregnancy and childbirth. With the 10-year anniversary of the Ipanema Tummy Tuck, board-certified plastic surgeon, Robert H. Gotkin, MD, continues to refine and perfect his state-ofthe-art technique for restoring the shape and tone of the abdomen following pregnancy or weight loss. Compared to a traditional tummy tuck (aka, abdominoplasty), this innovative, minimally invasive procedure uses laser energy to shorten the extent and time of recovery, decrease the risk of side effects and complications and enhance the overall cosmetic result. Liposuction – one of the most common cosmetic surgical procedures performed worldwide – has a limited ability to tighten loose abdominal skin often seen following pregnancy and weight loss. According to Dr. Gotkin, “a tummy tuck is the only surgical procedure that provides the cosmetic result that women want. But conventional tummy tucks are associated with a high complication rate and a long recovery period; this creates anxiety among the very people who stand to benefit most from the procedure.” Dr. Gotkin conceived the Ipanema Tummy Tuck while performing surgery on a woman who had traveled from Rio de Janeiro for her procedure. Already an expert in Smartlipo® (laserassisted liposuction), Gotkin

TALL and TAN THIN and YOUNG and LOVELY

employed Smartlipo as part of her tummy tuck. The laser energy ‘melts’ the fat, converts it into a liquid and less suction is required to remove it. This makes the procedure less invasive and less traumatic to the tissues. The laser energy also results in less bleeding during the procedure, less bruising afterwards and helps to tighten the overlying skin. Dr. Gotkin then conducted a clinical study which confirmed the benefits of the Ipanema Tummy Tuck. Compared to a traditional abdominoplasty, the results revealed that the Ipanema Tummy Tuck is safer, healing is quicker, and the recovery is more rapid and more comfortable. No drains are used and many patients took only plain Tylenol® during the entire post-operative period. No narcotics! Dr. Gotkin has continued to refine the procedure, which has all the cosmetic benefits of traditional abdominoplasty, but is safer and has fewer problems during surgery and a much lower complication rate afterwards. As a plastic surgeon practicing in the 21st century, who understands the dangers of sun exposure, Dr. Gotkin can no longer advocate the tan girl who strolled the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the famous song from the 1960s, but he does believe the Ipanema Tummy Tuck is the ideal procedure for anyone who wants to look slim and toned. With the new proclamation of “Tall and tan thin and young and lovely, Gotkin says, “who wouldn’t want to be that woman . . . who ‘when she passes, each one she passes goes Ahhh’”?

A conventional tummy tuck is out! The Ipanema Tummy Tuck™ is Dr. Gotkin’s new state-of-the-art procedure utilizing the FDA-approved Smartlipo® laser to perform a safer, less invasive tummy tuck. This new treatment provides a beautiful cosmetic result with a very fast, comfortable recovery.

Stop Fearing Open Toed Shoe Season Thanks To Laser Nail Treatments If you’re living in fear of open toed shoe season because of unsightly and embarrassing toenail fungus - there is finally a solution that has no side effects. Toenail fungus is an infection underneath the surface of the nail caused by fungi. When the tiny organisms take hold, the nail often becomes darker in color and smells foul. Debris may collect beneath the nail plate, white marks frequently appear on the nail plate, and the infection is capable of spreading to other toenails, the skin, or even the fingernails. If ignored, the infection can spread and possibly impair your ability to work or even walk. The resulting thicker nails are difficult to trim and make walking painful when wearing shoes. While there are creams and oral medications that can be taken, most have side effects that can last days, weeks or even years, making treating fungal nails a difficult decision when considering the options. Now there is an FDA approved treatment that can treat toenail fungus with absolutely no side effects. Laser nail treatments are performed by a podiatrist such as Dr. Mary

Behaviors that may help you reduce your risk for colorectal cancer

C

olorectal cancer is a formidable foe. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States. Colorectal cancer is similarly lethal in Canada, where the Canadian Cancer Society reports it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men and the third leading among women. Some risks for colorectal cancer are beyond an individual’s control. For example, the CCS notes that a personal or family history of polyps in the colon, rectum or both significantly increases a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Lynch syndrome, a condition caused by gene mutations, causes polyps to develop in the lining of the colon, rectum or both. Since Lynch syndrome is inherited, there is nothing men and women can do to reduce their risk of developing it. Research into colorectal cancer is ongoing, making it difficult for doctors to say certain behaviors or approaches are certain to reduce a person’s risk of developing the disease. But there are certain things individuals can do that might help save them from falling victim to colorectal cancer. Get screened. The CDC notes that colorectal cancer usually begins when polyps form in the colon or rectum. If they go undetected, these polyps may turn into cancer.

Physical activity may help men and women reduce their risk of developing colorectal cancer.

Screening can detect polyps early so they are found before they develop into cancer. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends colorectal cancer screening using high-sensitivity fecal occult blood testing, or FOBT; sigmoidoscopy; or colonoscopy for men and women between the ages of 50 and 75. Embrace physical activity. While men and women who are physically active can still get colorectal cancer, the CCS notes that people who live sedentary lifestyles are at a higher risk of developing the disease than those who are active. Maintain a healthy weight. According to the CCS, people who are overweight or obese have greater incidence rates of colorectal cancer than those who maintain healthy weights. The CCS also notes that men with a high body mass index, or BMI, seem to be most at risk of developing colorectal cancer. Limit alcohol consumption. The CDC notes that some studies have shown that limiting alcohol consumption may reduce a person’s risk of developing colorectal cancer. Colorectal cancer is a devastating disease, but men and women who embrace healthy behaviors may be able to lower their risks.

Arthritis linked to another condition

P

eople who see dermatologists for the skin condition psoriasis should not take the presence of joint aches and pains lightly, as the two things might be connected. The National Psoriasis Foundation notes that psoriasis is a precursor to psoriatic arthritis in 30 percent of patients.

What is psoriatic arthritis? Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition that affects the rate of skin cell reproduction. People with psoriasis may experience redness, itchiness and raised bumps (plaques) of skin on various areas of their bodies. Psoriatic arthritis is a chronic form of arthritis that typically occurs in people with skin psoriasis, but also can be present in those without the skin condition, but particularly among those who have relatives with psoriasis. The American College of Rheumatology says that psoriatic arthritis typically affects the large joints, especially the lower extremities, distal joints of the fingers and toes and the back and sacroiliac joints of the pelvis. Early recognition, diagnosis and treatment of psoriatic arthritis are crucial to relieving inflammation and preventing permanent joint damage.

Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis can develop gradually or quickly, and some symptoms can be severe. NPF indicates that common symptoms of psoriatic arthritis include • morning stiffness and tiredness;

Is It “TIN-uh-tis” or “tin-EYE-tis”? Americans love to debate how to say certain words: Is “tomato” pronounced “tuh-MAY-toe” or “tuh-MAH-toe”? Now we can safely add another word to the list of popular debates: tinnitus. At our practice, you can pronounce “tinnitus” however you’d like. Our concern is helping you get relief from your tinnitus — that persistent ringing, buzzing, or pulsing in your ears. What Is Tinnitus? Tinnitus affects more than 50 million Americans, but not everyone experiences it in the same way. Different people hear different sounds — ringing, pulsing, screeching, hissing, static, whooshing, roaring, even ocean waves. It often accompanies hearing loss, but there are many other things than can generate tinnitus. It’s not a disease; it’s a symptom of damage to the auditory system. It can be temporary or chronic, and it is often debilitating. Temporary Tinnitus With temporary tinnitus, your auditory system has experienced some irritation, and tinnitus has resulted. Removing the irritation allows your auditory system to recover within a couple of days. Temporary tinnitus is usually caused by: • Exposure to loud noise, like you’d experience at a concert • Ototoxic medication (medication that damages the inner ear at high doses), such as aspirin • Obstruction of the inner ear; for example, earwax or a foreign object Chronic Tinnitus Chronic tinnitus is just what it sounds like: The ringing, buzzing, or pulsing is permanent, and it’s present nearly 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In many cases, it’s simply a distraction, but in others it’s debilitating. Chronic tinnitus can greatly affect quality of life. Those with moderate or severe tinnitus often experience: • Depression • Anxiety • Trouble sleeping • Pain • Economic hardship It also affects the friends and family of those with tinnitus. The constant ringing or pulsing can make hearing difficult, so conversations can lead to frustration and irritability. If the tinnitus is accompanied — as it so often is — by sound sensitivity, then socializing at restaurants and family dinners is all the more troublesome. Chronic tinnitus has more foundational causes: • Noise-induced or age-related hearing loss • Head or neck trauma • Vestibular disorders, such as Ménière’s disease • TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) • TBI (traumatic brain injury) Is There a Cure? There is no cure for chronic tinnitus, but our patients have had success in minimizing its effects through a variety of methods, which include: • Sound therapy. Traditional tinnitus therapy uses a tone or a pleasant sound, like ocean waves, to mask your tinnitus. • Habituation. Sounds matched to your unique tinnitus are played back to you — often at levels you can’t hear — to partially inhibit your tinnitus. • Hearing aids. Because most cases of tinnitus are connected in some way to hearing loss, hearing aids often provide relief. • Combination. Many hearing aids now have built-in masking or habituation functionality, so they can address both your hearing loss and your tinnitus. TECHNOLOGY TO SUPPORT YOUR HEARING + YOUR MIND PREMIUM TECHNOLOGY. TOTAL BRAIN SUPPORT.

Treatment Doctors will need to assess symptoms before deciding on a course of treatment. Mild cases may respond to over-the-counter, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen. However, antirheumatic drugs and newer biologic drugs may be prescribed to treat more aggressive cases of psoriatic arthritis. Corticosteroid injections can be useful for swollen joints, and surgery may be necessary to repair badly damaged joints. Individuals who suspect their arthritis may be linked to psoriasis can first speak with a dermatologist or primary care physician. The NPF also offers a screening tool at www.psoriasis. org/psa-screening.

Symptoms

• tenderness, pain and swelling over tendons; • swollen fingers and toes; • reduced range of motion; • nail changes, including pitting, and • redness and pain in the eyes. Symptoms of psoriatic arthritis are similar to rheumatoid arthritis, gout and reactive arthritis. Doctors will rule out other symptoms that may be indicative of those conditions. The American College of Rheumatology also indicates that psoriatic arthritis is typically blood test negative. The diagnosis is typically made by a rheumatologist after reviewing a clinical history and performing a physical exam.

Minimize dark circles under the eyes Accept genetics

R

acoon eyes may be a side effect of forgetting to remove mascara and other eye makeup before retiring for bed. In such instances, dark eye circles are easily remedied with cleaning pads. For those whose dark circles can’t be swept away with soap

and water, dark, puffy eyes can be a cause for embarrassment or concern. Dark circles under the eyes may be a byproduct of various circumstances. Getting to the root of the problem can help women (and men) look more awake and fresh.

Genetics may be the biggest culprit in undereye circles. Some people simply inherit fair or thin skin around the eyes. This can make blood that pools in these areas (from stretched or broken capillaries) more visible. While a person cannot change his or her skin tone, gently washing one’s face — paying careful attention to the sensitive eye area — can help reduce damage. Also, getting more sleep can increase circulation to this area and prevent blood pooling.

Treat allergies and sinus issues According to Allergy &

Asthma Care of New York, allergies and other sinus issues can cause puffiness and dark eye circles. Histamines, which are released when an allergen is present, can cause blood vessels to swell and inflame. Getting tested for seasonal allergies can help people identify some possible triggers. Alleviating allergy symptoms can reduce the appearance of dark circles in some cases.

Reduce swelling Undereye bags can cause shadows to form and increase the appearance of dark circles. To remedy this, try to reduce fluid pooling in the face. Sleep elevated on a few pillows so that

fluid flows away from the eyes. Reduce consumption of alcohol and salty foods, which can exacerbate fluid retention. Cool compresses can be used to massage fluid gently away from the eyes as well.

Apply sunscreen Dark circles may result from pigmentation changes that occur after exposure to the sun or some other type of UV light. Individuals who apply sunscreen on their faces, including around their eyes, may be able to reduce or prevent pigment changes.

Rely on concealer Makeup can help counter the look of dark shadows and

pigmentation around the eyes. Use a shade that is opposite the color of the circles to camouflage them. For example, use orange-yellow tones to combat blue-purple shading under the eyes. Makeup artists also advise applying concealer in the shape of a triangle. That way a person is creating a light arrow that draws attention to the bright part of her eyes. Undereye circles and swelling can be alleviated when people get to the source of the problem. A combination of treating the sources and masking the issue can help. In severe cases, individuals should visit their dermatologists.

How to promote healthy kidneys

K

idney disease is a widespread issue made all the more disconcerting by the fact that many people are unaware they have it. According to the National Kidney Foundation, 26 million American adults have kidney disease, and most don’t know it. And the problem of kidney disease is not exclusive to the United States, as the Canadian Kidney Foundation notes that the number of Canadians being treated for kidney failure has tripled over the last quarter century. Healthy kidneys are something many people take for granted. But those who want to do everything they can to keep their kidneys healthy can consider the following tips, courtesy of the Cleveland Clinic. Stay hydrated, but avoid overhydration. Many people are familiar with the benefits of drinking water each day, and adequate hydration definitely promotes healthy kidneys. But overhydrating has not been proven to enhance kidney

function. The Cleveland Clinic recommends adults drink between four and six glasses of water per day. Exercise. Regular exercise benefits various parts of the human body, including the kidneys. High blood pressure and diabetes are two of the biggest risk factors for kidney disease, and regular exercise can reduce a person’s risk of both conditions. However, overexertion can strain the kidneys, so adults who exercise, especially novices who need to improve their conditioning, should avoid going too hard at the gym. Speak with a physician before taking vitamin supplements or herbal remedies. Vitamin supplements and herbal remedies have become very popular in the 21st century, but excessive supplementation can harm the kidneys. Discuss any supplements or herbals remedies with a physician before taking them.

Staying hydrated while avoiding overhydration is one way for men and women to protect their kidneys. Quit smoking. Just as exercise benefits the body in myriad ways, smoking harms the body in myriad ways. Smoking decreases the blood flow in the kidneys, decreasing their ability to function at optimal capacity. Smoking also increases a person’s risk of high blood pressure and cancer of the kidneys. Eat healthy. A healthy diet decreases a person’s risk for high blood pressure and diabetes. Adhering to a healthy diet and

controlling portion sizes can help control weight and blood pressure and contribute to healthy kidneys as well. Get screened. Adults who have been diagnosed with high blood pressure or diabetes should make sure their physicians screen for kidney dysfunction during routine appointments. Learn more about kidney disease at www.kidney.org.

How common is carpal tunnel?

I

ncreased hours spent on computer keyboards and digital devices can put people at risk for a relatively common and oftentimes painful condition that affects mobility in the wrist. Carpal tunnel syndrome, or CTS, can cause numbness, pain and tingling in the hand or arm as a result of one of the major nerves of the hand — the median nerve — being compressed in the wrist. The American College of Rheumatology says that CTS may be the most common nerve disorder experienced today, affecting

between four and 10 million people in the United States alone. Middle-aged to older individuals are more likely to develop CTS than younger persons, and females are diagnosed three times more frequently than males.

What is the carpal tunnel? The carpal tunnel is a passage that forms in the wrist on the palm side of the hand. It is located just beneath the skin surface. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke says the carpal tunnel is a narrow, rigid passageway of ligament and bones. Eight small wrist bones form three sides of the tunnel. The width of the tunnel is only about an inch. Injury or inflammation to the tissues inside of the carpal tunnel can shrink the space of the tunnel, eventually pressing on the tendons and the median nerve that runs through this narrow area.

The role of the median nerve When compression occurs in this area of the wrist, a key nerve is affected. The median nerve originates in the neck and runs through the arm. The median nerve passes through the carpal tunnel at the wrist and goes into the hand, providing feeling to the palm side of the thumb and to the index, middle and part of the ring fingers (although not the little finger). It also controls some small muscles at the base of the thumb.

Symptoms of carpal tunnel Weakness of the hand as well as tingling and numbness are the two most common symptoms of CTS. The numbness particularly affects four of the fingers. It can occur when holding a phone, book, newspaper or steering wheel or engaging in just about any

activity that involves the hands. CTS also may wake a person up from sleep. There are a number of other compression issues that can occur in the hand and arms, causing similar pain and tingling in other areas. Ulnar nerve compression in the elbow can cause part of the ring finger and pinky finger to tingle and may be indicative of a different ailment. That’s why a professional diagnosis must be sought when experiencing symptoms related to CTS. When to see a doctor If pain and tingling are affecting activities and sleeping patterns, individuals should see their doctors. Various nonsurgical remedies and therapies may help. If left untreated, any condition that affects nerve function may lead to permanent nerve and muscle damage.

Protect eyes from ultraviolet rays and cornea. The following are some common eye conditions that can be linked to exposure to UV rays. Photokeratitis Excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time can cause photokeratitis, which is equivalent to a sunburn of the eye. Photokeratitis may occur after spending long hours at the beach or skiing without proper eye protection. UVB rays cause photokeratitis, and these rays can burn the cornea, potentially causing pain and temporary vision loss.

T

hanks to increased awareness about the perils of exposure to ultraviolet rays and skin damage, a greater number of people routinely apply sunscreen before spending time outdoors. But while people take steps to prevent sunburns, skin cancer and premature aging, they may fail to consider that UV rays also can damage their eyes. Just as people protect their skin from the sun, so, too, should they safeguard their eyes. Prevent Blindness America warns that the sun is comprised of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays may hurt central vision by damaging the macula, or a part of the retina at the back of the eye. UVB rays typically affect the front part of the eye or the lens

Macular degeneration According to the American Optometric Association, macular degeneration is a deterioration of the part of the retina that is responsible for sharp, central vision. In addition to UV rays, chronic exposure to shorter-wavelength visible blue and violet light can be harmful to the retina. The sun and many artificial light sources, such as LEDs and smartphones, emit blue light. Some blue light can be beneficial, but some can be harmful to the eyes. Lenses that absorb harmful blue light or block it can prevent retinal damage. Pterygium Pterygium is a growth that forms on the outer portion of the eye, or the cornea and conjunctiva. The World Health Organization says that

prolonged UV exposure can contribute to this condition. Pterygium may extend over the cornea and reduce vision, requiring surgical removal. Cataracts UV exposure also can contribute to the formation of cataracts. Prevent Blindness America says a cataract is a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, the part of the eye that focuses the light people see. Sun protection Sunglasses should completely cover the eyes, including the skin on the eyelids and under the eye, to provide adequate protection for the eyes. Wraparound frames will offer additional protection to those who spend a lot of time outdoors in bright sunlight. The AOA says sunglasses should also do the following. • Block out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. • Screen out between 75 and 90 percent of visible light. • Have lenses that are perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection. • Have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition. Consumers should speak with an eye doctor if they have additional questions about eye protection. Prescription lenses can be tinted and treated to offer UV protection.

Traditional Chinese Medicine: The Alternative Remedy When you ask the average person, “What does acupuncture treat?” The common response is, “Pain,” or, “I heard it helps with fertility treatment.” Jaime and Janet are two women who have benefited from acupuncture beyond their expectation. Both referred by loved ones and seeking acupuncture treatment, Jaime was diagnosed with infertility while Janet suffered with tendonitis and severe pain. While receiving fertility treatment, Jaime was diagnosed premenopausal. In addition to her biweekly acupuncture treatments, she was treated with Chinese herbs that not only helped revive her menstrual cycle, but also helped her sleep better. Beyond her initial need for consultation, Jaime had suffered from vertigo for over 10 years. The vertigo she suffered was found to be a symptom of Hoshimoto’s disease, an autoimmune disease that leads to underactive thyroid function. medicine, Jaime hasn’t had a bad episode of vertigo since 2015 and is convinced of how it has contributed to her health. “More than the obvious benefits, it’s relaxing. It’s more than worth trying. Do the research on all the ailments [acupuncture] treats!” Jaime advised. Janet was about to get hand surgery when her son advised her to seek acupuncture therapy first. Her hand was “purple,” abnormally swollen and in severe pain. As a Type II, insulin dependent diabetic, it was not in her best interest to undergo surgery because she doesn’t heal well. In addition to her initial complaints, Janet had suffered with Frozen Shoulder Syndrome that she did not declared to her acupuncture doctor. “I have been a patient [at Empire Medicine] for about five weeks. For three and half years my hand was [purple]. Now my hands are the same color. They tried everything in physical therapy [for my frozen Shoulder Syndrome]. I must’ve gone for a year and a half. Finally the

physical therapist said to me, ‘I can’t torture you anymore. I’m hurting you so badly. And, you walk out of here and you’re all locked up again.’ After 2 [acupuncture] treatments and the herbs, I saw a tremendous difference. I can put my hands behind my back. My hand is normal. I lost a little weight. I would recommend acupuncture to anybody!” Janet exclaimed. Acupuncture treatment for pain and fertility is common knowledge that overshadows the other medically documented treatments of underlying ailments that are simultaneously treated if not remedied. It further bears consequence when the common person understands acupunctureas a sole entity where it is a mere component of a whole. Traditional Chinese Medicine uses acupuncture, Chinese Herbal Medicine, massage (Tuina) and exercise (Ch’i gong) to create a balance in one’s Ch’i: the fundamental concept of energy flow and life force that streams through all
