L king back: The rich hist y of Willist P k
Long before the discovery of America, the area known as Williston Park was a lush woodland teeming with small game and used as a camping ground by small bands of Matinecock Indians.
During the Colonial Period, English settlers crossed Long Island Sound by boat from Connecticut. They homesteaded on the large, treeless, grassy plains then known as the Great Plains of Hempstead.
Among the early settlers was Henry Willis who, in 1675, purchased some twenty-two acres in what is now Old Westbury. They were the area’s original farmers.
His family grew and prospered and his descendents acquired much of the property in the surrounding areas. As a result, the locality became known as the Willistons.
During the Revolutionary War, the large Town of Hempstead extended from the north shore to the south shore.
Residents in the southerly portion of the town had been loyal to the British, while many of those in the north were in favor of independence.
After the war, the rift between the two sections seemed irreconcilable. The New York State Legislature passed an act in 1784 dividing the town into North Hempstead and South Hempstead. Later South Hempstead became Hempstead.
The farmlands prospered and until the Civil War. Water was the primary means of moving goods east and west to and from New York City using Hempstead Harbor and Con-
necticut waterways.
By 1850, Willis Avenue was the most heavily traveled road to the harbor docks.
During the Civil War the building of the Long Island Rail Road was begun. The first branch line into the Willistons was freight. In 1864 a line to Glen Cove was constructed.
The East Williston station was completed in 1887.
The area began to prosper. A brickyard, factory, fertilizer plant, large dairies and several hotels were among the commercial activities established near the railroad tracks.
A Post Office was established in 1879. The State Legislature created Nassau County in 1899.
As the population grew, transportation brought more industry and larger communities.
The shift from farming to a suburban community began was greatly accelerated in 1926 when William F. Chatlos, a prominent builder, began construction of 1,000 “Happiness Homes” on a 195-acre tract west of the railroad station.
World War I veterans purchased many of these homes, which sold for between $4,000 and $6,900.
The Chatlos Development raised the population of the community from 495 people to 4,500 within a four-year period.
As the houses were completed and occupied, the residents saw the advantages of home rule.
A meeting was held locally at the Strat-
ford Lumberyard Company on East Williston Avenue in September 1926. Of the 150 persons eligible to vote, 120 voters cast their vote. The majority voted “yes.”
The new Incorporated Village of Williston Park began its road to growth and progress. The first election was held on Oct. 4, 1926.
Mayor Harvey Meagher and Trustees Forslund and Rasch were sworn in a few days later. At first the village business was conducted at the home of the village clerk, Robert Kent.
Kent held the position of village clerk and collector of taxes for 34 years until his retirement in 1960.
Many decisions had to be made on a daily basis by the mayor and trustees. Growth and development of the village over the years would bring many changes.
The first Company of the Williston Park Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1927. The following year saw the establishment of St. Aidan’s Roman Catholic Church followed within a few years by St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, the Williston Park Reformed Church and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
The Cross Street School was opened in 1931. In the 1930s the Great Depression was felt in the Village, but compassion and concern for all the residents was a priority.
Village government worked to assist with local jobs in the area placing residents in federal and state programs if the village received monies. A result was the construction of the
library that opened on June 17, 1937 with donated books.
During the 1940s, 650 men and women from Williston Park served in World War II in various branches of the armed forces.
On the Village Green are granite monuments dedicated to the fallen veterans from the Village. On Memorial Day and on Veterans Day members of the Williston American Legion Post No. 144, along with members of various organizations such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Little League baseball players, the Volunteer Fire Department and village officials gather to honor those who died in defense of their nation.
Suitable employment and education under the GI Bill of Rights was provided to returning veterans. The Auxiliary Police, highway, sanitation and sewer services and the building of St. Aidan’s parochial school came about in the 1950s.
In the 1960s, village government started and completed many new projects — a new firehouse, the expansion of the Village Hall, the library moving to its present quarters, a new Post Office, the construction of a water well and the opening of the village swimming pool which was dedicated on July 4, 1963.
From the 1980s to the present, the village government continues to update and improve the Village buildings, playgrounds, swimming pool and small parks.

Post 160 is a group of young adults (fire explorers) ages 14 ( or have completed 8 th Grade) to 18 years old who are interested in the fire service. The Mineola Junior Fire Department are sponsored by the Mineola Fire Department and chartered by the Boy Scouts of America.
What do we do?
Junior fire fighters learn nearly all aspects of basic fire fighting. These include topics such as fire suppression, salvage and
overhaul, SCBA (self contained breathing apparatus) aerial operations, ground ladders, first aid, public relations etc. After demonstrating excellence in all areas of the program the juniors then can join the departments Ride-A-Long Program. Members must have parental permission to participate in this program. They are allowed to respond to the firehouse and man the trucks to a fire scene.
By responding to fire calls the junior firefighter frees up a qualified senior fire-
fighter to perform other crucial tasks. While their assistance is an asset to the scene, their primary purpose for going on these calls is to learn first-hand fire ground operations and fire cause investigations. They do not perform actual fire fighting activities. Being a firefighter can be a dangerous job. Strict laws exist to protect minors from hazardous dangers. The Mineola Fire Department takes safety very seriously during training or real emergencies.
The Mineola Fire Department has re-
cently adopted a seventeen year old rule that allows a junior who has turned seventeen and is entering his senior year in high school to apply for membership in the Mineola Fire Department. A number of our juniors have taken advantage of this ruling and are now members of the fire department. We hope this gives you a little insight on the workings of the Mineola Junior Fire Department. A look back: the history of the post offices of the Willistons
The East Williston Post Office was established on May 19, 1879.
At that time there was a post office called “Williston” in Erie County and a variation of the name was required for the new office, hence East Williston.
East Williston as a post office designation was cancelled in 1958 when the name of the post office was changed to “Williston Park” in deference to the larger population in that neighboring village.
William Post was appointed the first postmaster and held that position for 20 years.
The Post Office remained in the first
location for 34 years. In 1913 it was moved to a frame building west of the tracks, probably one of the former factory structures.
Then in 1914 to 23 Hillside Ave., and in 1926 across the tracks again, and in 1928 west again to 36-38 Hillside Ave.
In 1945 the Post Office achieved first class status and a move was made to 129 Hillside Ave. in 1951 to provide larger quarters.
The present Post Office on Willis Avenue in Williston Park was dedicated in November 1963.

The rich hist y of Shelt Rock Libr y
March 1 deadline for obtaining more than $300,000 in federal aid, the Library Trustees themselves requested a referendum. On February 16, 1967, the bond issue was approved by a vote of two to one.
The Shelter Rock Public Library opened the doors of its handsome new home at 165 Searingtown Road, Albertson, on March 2, 1970, and was rededicated to the future on April 12, 1970 – the first day of National Library Week.
Pioneers of the Shelter Rock Public Library realized a dream that lesser souls might have dismissed as impossible. The Library firmly established a community concept where a community does not, in fact, exist; for the Shelter Rock Public Library District is comprised of contiguous unincorporated areas served by three different school districts as well as several water districts and post offices.
In 1960, residents of Herricks, Albertson and Roslyn Heights who were denied library benefits finally succeeded in forming a Friends of the Library organization. These residents lacked library service because they lived outside existing library districts that were no longer able, because of limited facilities, to offer nonresident privileges. This determined group sought to establish a new library. However, the area to be served did not fit any existing pattern of library service in Nassau County - school district, village, municipal or association - or even in New York State. There was no legal framework for providing a taxing authority to finance a library.
In April 1962, state legislation was passed to create a special Shelter Rock library district which encompassed about eight square miles and a population of about 30,000 people. On June 20, 1962, a referendum was passed by four to one, and a Board of Trustees was elected. The first library director was hired August 27, 1962. Space consisting of 2,500 square feet at 194 I. U. Willets Road, Albertson, was rented the following month. The library was dedicated February 24, 1963, and opened March 4, 1963.
The library grew fast and was heavily used from the start. It was evident by the second year that a move to larger quarters was imperative. Since adequate rental space was not available, the Board of Trustees decided that a building program should be undertaken. In 1965, site selection and planning began.
Funding for a new building depended on action by the Board of the Town of North Hempstead. A referendum was not required. Fearing, however, that the legalities of a referendum-by-petition might delay affirmative action past the
Over the years, the building went through some minor renovations, however in 2001 a consultant’s study determined that major changes would be required if the Library wanted to meet the needs of its patrons for the foreseeable future. Town of North Hempstead approvals were obtained and in May of 2010 the building closed to undergo a major renovation.
During the renovation, the Library operated from a storefront in the Herricks Shopping Center on Hillside Avenue. This temporary location offered a small, but varied collection of library materials. Programming continued at Temple Tikvah, a generous community partner.
When the Library re-opened in September of 2011, patrons were welcomed into a brighter, more open space that offered greater access to technology and increased programming. Even though the construction is complete, the Library continues to evolve, keeping pace with changing world.

A hist y of the East Willist Libr y
Early in 1937, Thomas E. Ryan and a group of residents appeared before the Village Board to explain the need for a library.
The East Williston Library was established in May 1937 with an appropriation of $300 by the Village Board.
Mayor William H. Dickson appointed the following to form a Library Board comprised of William Adams, Walter Barre, Edward Miller, Thomas E. Ryan and Edward Weeks.
Ryan was elected president of the Board. The next month, June 1937, Marion Holt was engaged to serve as a librarian and the opening of the library was June 30, 1937.
The library was on the second floor of the Village Hall until 1951 when the building was remodeled.
The library was at that time moved to the first floor, into the space formerly occupied by the fire department.
Mayor Frank E. Devlin supervised the rebuilding and was aided by Nicholas A. Meyer, a library trustee.
Meyer consulted with Louis D. Bai-
ley, then director of the Queens Borough Public Library and a recognized authority on small library buildings.
He reviewed the plans to assure that the best use was made of the available space in accordance with good library practice.
Bailey said that he had always admired East Williston and as a result waived his usual consulting fee.
A permanent charter was granted to the library on Feb. 29, 1952 by the University of the State of New York.
The name of the “East Williston Public Library” was changed on Sept. 28, 1962 to the Thomas E. Ryan Public Library of East Williston to honor Ryan for having served as president of the Library Board for 25 years.
The library joined the Nassau County Library System on Sept. 25, 1967.

Hist y of the Minela Mem ial Libr y
In 1921 a committee of civic-minded citizens formed the Mineola Library Association to begin the work of establishing a community library. Its by-laws called for the appointment of a professional librarian and a membership drive. The Association was offered the free use of a small building and property that were centrally located for the library. A village door-todoor membership drive netted enrollment of 97 members, plus cash and book donations. The appointed librarian, Mrs. Theodore Schmidt, accepted the job but planned to help only for a year or two. Thirty five years later she retired, after working without pay for the first 26 years.
Mineola’s first public library was officially opened on February 2, 1922. The tiny one-room building located at Jericho Turnpike and Mineola Boulevard soon became known as the “Little Library.” Heated by a single wood stove, men from the Village would take turns chopping wood and loading the stove. During the week the library was open for two hours every afternoon, plus two hours three nights a week, and five hours on Saturdays – two
hours in the morning, closed for a lunch period, then three hours in the afternoon.
The Little Library soon proved to be a welcome and popular addition to the Village of Mineola. In 1923, the library’s first full year of operation, 115 adults and 95 children became members and a total of $178.92 was collected in fines. By 1925, the library was in search of a more permanent location. Money was raised to purchase property on the corner of Mineola Boulevard and Banbury Road. The Little Library building was moved to its new location on July 29, 1926. Many members of the community contributed labor and materials and raised money for the necessary improvements.
Through the 1930s and 40s the library continued to increase circulation and membership. Open hours increased to 30 hours per week, then later to 48 hours. A Friends of the Library group was organized in 1949 and was instrumental in promoting the library’s services to the community and the need for expanded facilities. In 1954 the Mineola Village Board decided that a War Memorial for the Village would take the form of a new library to be called Mineola Memorial Library. A site was selected in the municipal park on Marcellus Road, and bonds were issued totaling $337,500 for the building construction. The new Mineola Memorial Library was dedicated on May 30, 1956, and on September 22 of that year Mineola’s Little Library closed its doors for good.
Over the following decades the library continued to expand its membership, circulation, and services. In 1999 the library
building again went through a much-needed expansion project. Over the following 18 months, the building was expanded to include the addition of dedicated children’s room, an adult reference and reading room with fireplace, public computer terminals, elevator, and outdoor deck. The reopening of the library
in January 2001 saw the complete transformation of Mineola’s Little Library into a community facility ready for the challenges of the twentyfirst century. The Mineola Memorial Library today is a true reflection of the needs and interests of the village that created it nearly a century ago.

L king back: A hist y of the East Willist Bell
The Village Green makes a tranquil setting for the Village of East Williston.
At the western end of the Green are simple but impressive war memorials where patriotic ceremonies are conducted on appropriate occasions.
Near the end of the lawn, on a stone base, is the Bell, which now serves as the village’s official logo. According to legend, the bell at one time was mounted on the original Queens County Court House.
The courthouse was
erected in 1788 and the bell was cast much later.
The inscription on the bell reads: “A. Meneely & Son, West Troy, N.Y. 1851.” It is possible that the courthouse was remodeled in the 1850’s and a bell was added at that time.
In any event, the so-called “Court House Bell” was acquired by the East Williston Hook and Ladder Company for use as a fire alarm bell, in which capacity it served effectively until it was replaced by a siren.
The bell is a memento of the early days of the village and represents a bit of nostalgia.

From school house to firehouse
Mineola Fire Department has served village residents for over 130 years
On Dec. 8, 1888, a group of men met in a school house on Willis Avenue to discuss the formation of a volunteer fire department in Mineola.
Three weeks later, on Christmas Day, Mineola Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 was formed.
On February 8, 1889, the first regular meeting was held in the school house with 23 members present.
The company rolled to their first fire on April 29, 1889.
A notation in the fire record reads as follows: “barn shed, carriage house and corn crib, property of Caroline L. Smith of Mineola, with entire contents except carriages, consisting of six good horses, three cows, about seven tons of hay, one ton straw, four sets double and two sets single harness, two sleighs, lot potatoes and three barrels vinegar consumed by fire discovered about 1:30 a.m.”
The first Mineola firehouse was built around 1889.
On Jan. 1, 1899, it was chosen as a temporary home of the Nassau County Court. The building also served as a civic center with many village organizations holding their meetings there.
On April 19, 1907, the Mineola Village Board incorporated the Jericho Turnpike Engine and Hose Company No. 1 of Mineola, known as Company No. 2 today.
Two separate and independent fire companies now protect the Village of Mineola.
During the year of 1908, the new company continued to grow. Training standards were set and meetings were held with Mineola Hook & Ladder Company No. 1 (Engine Co. 1 today) for the purpose of electing one chief for both departments.
On March 8, 1910, the village asked the companies if they would let the village use its fire apparatus until the village could take over the equipment. They approved, provided that the village pay rent.
This began the process of combin-
ing both fire companies to become part of the village government.
Just four years after Mineola became an incorporated village, officials passed a resolution that the two fire companies be reorganized into a village volunteer fire department.
The christening of the Mineola firehouse took place on March 20, 1913.
Seven years later, on March 23, 1920, the village purchased all property, buildings and equipment owned by Jericho Turnpike Engine & Hose Company No. 1 for $1.
Hose Company No. 3 was formally organized on Aug. 22, 1922.
Before Company No. 3’s firehouse was built, the firemen held their meetings either in their own homes, in Company No. 1’s Firehouse on Main Street or in Company No. 2’s Firehouse on Jericho Turnpike.
Company No. 3’s firehouse was erected by the original members of the company in their spare time and opened in 1923.
By 1925, the Company No. 1 firehouse, which also housed the Village Hall, had fallen into disrepair. The Village Board decided to expand Company No. 2’s firehouse, which was renovated with the truck room facing Washington Avenue on the rear of the building.
The existing firehouse was converted into the new Village Hall. Both fire companies were then housed in the new quarters. The new building was dedicated in 1928 and is know as headquarters.
The Mineola Hotel fire hit the front page of all local newspapers in 1966. One person was found dead in this arson-related fire.
In 1976 and for the second time in its history, the Mineola Fire Department mourned the loss of one of its leaders when Chief Jack Levatino succumbed to a heart at-
tack. A rescue truck is dedicated to his honor.
The Mineola Junior Fire Department was organized in 1976.
On March 19, 1983 Company No. 3 dedicated its new, larger and more modern quarters, next door to its old firehouse.
The old structure still serves the village as the headquarters for the Mineola Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
In September 1988, the first female firefighter in the department’s 100-year history joined Company No. 3.
At the beginning of the new millennium, the headquarters on Washington Avenue was completely renovated, adding
two new bays to house the newer and larger equipment that is needed in today’s firefighting. Information provided by the Mineola Fire Department.
