A history of the Ellen E. Ward Clock Tower The Ellen E. Ward Clock Tower was commissioned by her children and dedicated to her memory in 1895. Ellen Eliza Cairnes Ward was born in 1826 and grew up in Roslyn Harbor at “Clifton” now known as “Willowmere.” She married Midshipman Robert Stuart, USN in 1848. The couple had three children and resided in Roslyn Harbor at “Locust Knoll” now known as “Mayknoll” Lt. Stuart resigned his commission in 1857 and died in 1863. Three years later, Ellen married Eliza Ward who had been judge advocate general of New York State. He died in 1882. Ellen Ward was deeply interested in and dedicated to the Roslyn community. She dedicated a window in Trinity Church in memory of her husband and in 1885 she donated the Roslyn Watering Trough which is located on the triangle at the intersection of Old Northern Boulevard and Bryant Avenue. Her children donated a litney desk and Brass Eagle Lecturn to Trinity Church in their mother’s memory. There was extensive media coverage regarding the building of the Clock Tower with articles in the Roslyn News from March 1895 to its completion in December 1895. The architects for the design of the Clock Tower were Lamb & Rich of New York. Mr. Hugo Lamb was the architect of Theodore Roosevelt’s home “Sagamore Hill.”

Harry Skewes was the mason in charge representing the firm of George Mertz and Sons of Port Chester. He relocated his family to a house on East Broadway to be closer to his work. The design of the Tower was referred to as “Egyptian” but was in actuality known as “Richardsonian Romanesque” named for the architect H.H. Richardson (18381866). The clockworks were made by Andrew S. Hotchkis of Seth Thomas Manufactury, Thomaston, Conn. and the clock and four faces were placed in the third level of the Tower and set in operation by Mr. King of Thomaston. The clock is a weight driven Seth Thomas No. 17, eight-day strike. The first keeper of the clock was a local citizen, Charles H. Pearsall. Today it is maintained by the Village Of Roslyn. It underwent extensive restoration in 1995 and again in 1999. A descendent of the Ward family, Marshall Ward, volunteered interior carpentry restoration in 1995. Above the entrance door is the memorial which reads; “In Loving Memory of Ellen E. Ward A.D. 1895 To Whom Roslyn and Its People Were Dear She Fell Asleep January 18, 1893” Information provided by the Roslyn Landmark Society

Cedarmere Museum & Preserve Cedarmere, the country home of prominent 19th-century poet, newspaper editor, and civic leader William Cullen Bryant, is a 7-acre site on the west side of Bryant Avenue in the Village of Roslyn Harbor. The property has a pond, boathouse, house, mill, gardens, and a spectacular landscaped designed by Bryant. Here, Bryant sought sanctuary from the congestion on chaos of the city, where he could rest, work on his poetry, and spend time surrounded by nature. Originally used as a settlement in the early 17th Century, Richard Kirk, a Quaker farmer, owned the property and in 1787 built the original house. The property passed to William Hicks and, in 1836, to Joseph A. Moulton. William Cullen Bryant purchased the 40 acre property in 1843,

naming it Cedarmere after the cedar trees which ringed the ponds (or “mere” as it was then called). Throughout the 1840s and 1860s, Bryant purchased additional land and expanded the main house. The original house was altered by Bryant several times with the most extensive renovations taking place in 1860. After his death, the house was passed on to his younger daughter Julia, who in turn sold it to her sister’s son Harold Godwin in 1891. After a house fire in 1902, Godwin rebuilt the home in 1903 keeping the same basic form as the old house but making several changes. Following Godwin’s death in 1931, Cedarmere passed first to his wife and then his daughter Elizabeth Love Godwin, who bequeathed it to Nassau County in 1975. Fighting fires in Roslyn since 1852 On November 1, 1852, a meeting of the “Inhabitants of Roslynâ€? was held at the Roslyn Hotel for the purpose of procuring â€œďŹ re apparatusâ€? and to organize a ďŹ re company. The minutes of this meeting show that the sum of $132.00, a large amount in those days, was subscribed and a committee was appointed to get estimates on a site and a suitable house. A resolution was adopted at the meeting that the ďŹ re company be known as “Rescue.â€? Records of company meetings for the year of 1853 show that a “complete set of hooks and laddersâ€? was procured and a “carriageâ€? contracted for. A site for the ďŹ rehouse was leased for the sum of two dollars per year and it was reported that the “house was built complete.â€? It would appear that this ďŹ rst ďŹ rehouse of Rescue was located on land between what is now the George Washington Manor and Nassau-Suolk Lumber Co. The company stayed in that location until 1879 when the ďŹ rehouse was moved to a site adjacent to the Roslyn Savings Bank. On January 26, 1891, the company moved to their new “truck houseâ€? on Bryant Avenue, now demolished to make way for the Northern Boulevard viaduct, where they remained until 1937 when rescue moved to its present quarters next to the viaduct. Roslyn Rescue Hook and Ladder Co. #1, Memorial Day ca. 1905 are quite complete and make for interesting reading. It would appear that the original “houseâ€? was unheated, so meetings were held there only in warm weather. The winter meetings were held in the oďŹƒces of the Roslyn Mill or of Hicks and Son Lumber Co. It is recorded that March 12, 1866, a meeting was held on the “new Fairbanks Patent Scalesâ€? owned by J. Hicks & Sons.
The roll was called. “Greasersâ€? were appointed for the following month. No other business was performed, as “the moon did not give suďŹƒcient light for our purpose.â€? In that same year, on May 14, 1866, the old company was granted its charter by the Legislature of the state. This charter is one of Rescue’s prized possessions and
the company still operates under its provisions. The equipment of Rescue in its early days was primitive to say the least. An inventory of the company property in 1875 shows that it consisted mainly of buckets, ladders, hooks and chains. In the year 1888, the company was presented with a horse drawn hook and ladder truck by Admiral Aaron Ward, a Roslyn resident. This truck carried a hand pump slung on a platform underneath the ladders. It was delivered to Roslyn from New York on the steamer “Idlewild,â€? which docked at a pier between what is now the Curtis and Fahnstock Estates in Roslyn Harbor. The arrival of this equipment was the signal for great celebration. The company at its meeting moved “that the inhabitants be notiďŹ ed and invited to light up.â€? The ďŹ remen, in new uniforms, and with a band of music, met the steamer at the dock and drew the new apparatus through the Ward’s yard and around the village. Fires were fortunately few and far between in those times and accounts of these events are noted in the minutes. Fighting fires in Roslyn since 1852 Continued from Page 35 and the adjoining buildings were saved. A veil of silence hung over the fate of the building in which the fire occurred. With new equipment and new uniforms, the company took a new lease on life. Parades were the order of the day. The company traveled around the county to Hempstead, Oyster Bay, Merrick, to the parades in horse drawn wagons, while teams drew the fire apparatus. They took part in the opening of the Town Hall in Manhasset on Oct. 10, 1907. In the year 1901, the firehouse on Bryant Avenue was wired for electricity. The bid of the Roslyn Light and Power Company (now the Long Island Power Authority) in the amount of $31 dollars was accepted. On, Nov. 15, 1902, fire destroyed the famous William Cullen Bryant Homestead, now the Goodwin Estates. This catastrophe was brought on by the failure of the hand operated Hook & Ladder pump; apparently a common occurrence. As a result of this incident, a fine Silsby steam fire engine was presented to the company by Clarence H. Mackay, who lived on his estate, Harbor Hill, which is now the major portion of the Village of East Hills. The efficient pumping engine is still the prized possession of the company and it is occasionally taken to parades, although it is increasingly difficult to obtain horses to draw it. This engine was still in pumping condition at the time of the World’s Fair at Flushing in 1938 and put on demonstration there at that time. Clarence H. Mackay of A.T. & T. fame was elected a member of Rescue on Oct.

Ryan, of Anaconda Copper; De Lancy Kountze, chairman of Devoe & Reynold Paint Company; Charles Snedecor and Cornelius Remsen, both chairmen of the Nassau County Board of Supervisors at various times. In the early 1900s the first auto ap-
peared. The minutes of the meeting of Sept. 13, 1909 contain a violation that $3 was paid to Arthur Francis for transporting firemen in his auto to a fire in Westbury. On June 10, 1912, the company purchased a Mack motor hose truck for the sum of $3,000. This truck was not noted for speed and some present members can still recall running alongside the truck up Roslyn’s hills to lighten the load.
Finances were always a problem as the company was dependent upon donations and various social activities for money to purchase apparatus and equipment. In 1913, arrangements were made with the Town of North Hempstead by which the sum of $700 per year was paid the company for fire protection. A special meeting was held on March 15, 1915, in regard to becoming “Town Firemen,” and at its meeting of June 14, 1915, the company refused to sell its apparatus to the town. While the company income today is considerably more then $700 per year, the cost of operating a modern up-to-date fire department steadily is increasing so that there is no danger of the company members becoming spendthrifts. Rescue is proud of the fact that while all other taxes have risen fantastically, taxes for the fire protection in the Roslyn area were the same for many years. There was no increase in the fire protection tax rate from 1947 to 1971. Rescue is proud of its beautifully designed and well maintained fire headquarters and two annex fire stations housing up-to-date and efficient fire and E.M.S. equipment. All the most modern devices from fog and foam for fire fighting, two-way radios for communications, and medical supplies are carried on the two pumpers, aerial ladder truck, flood light truck, heavy rescue truck, ambulance, and chief’s cars. The company’s members are proud of Rescue’s history and achievements and intend to maintain its excellent record and reputation of the past 148 years. The first paper mill in New York State The 1773 Paper Mill was established by Hendrick Onderdonk. It was the first paper mill in New York State and one of the first in the Colonies. Paper manufacturing had been suppressed in the Colonial era and import duties were high. In 1801 he sold it to William Valentine, a local papermaker whose family operated the mill until 1891. Obediah Washington Valentine, born in 1811, ran the mill until his death in 1854. His brother, Myers Valentine, took over the operation of the mill and changed it to steam. Myers died in 1891 and the mill stopped production in 1896. The last mill product was a set of pasteboard cake boxes for the June 1886

wedding of President Grover Cleveland. From 1896 to 1915 it was left to deteriorate. The present building was erected in 1915 by the Roslyn Neighborhood Association. The small building was built to resemble the original. The lower floor was a generating plant with a wheel turned by an electric generator which provided light for the park. The upper floor was designed for community meetings and social activities. For a time it was leased by the American Legion. Today, it is owned and managed by The Town of North Hempstead. Library a legacy of famed journalist The earliest mention of the Bryant Library, recognized today as the oldest continuing library in Nassau County, is found in a June 18, 1874 letter penned by noted poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant. Writing to a friend from his Roslyn Harbor home, Cedarmere, Bryant anticipates showing “where I am laying the foundations of a Reading Room and Lecture Hall for the village – for the people have no places to meet in the evening save the bar rooms.� Located on Bryant Avenue, and known as “The Hall� (and later, “Bryant Hall�), the building included space for a library and reading room, as well as a public hall and an apartment for the librarian/ caretaker. Records show that one of the earliest community gatherings held at “The Hall� was a “Programme of Exercises� for the village’s July 4, 1876 Centennial Celebration. Shortly after Bryant’s death in June 1878, a group of citizens began making plans to create a library in his memory. The Bryant Circulating Library Association was formed at a public meeting held at the Hall on November 13, 1878. In January 1879, Bryant’s daughter, Julia, deeded the property and building to the Library Association for $1.00. Operating funds came from the sale of shares of stock as well as by leasing the building “for reading rooms, public meetings,

prove the reading room, purchase new books, and hire Pratt Institute-trained librarians to catalog the collection. One of the librarians stated “it was the most complete and well selected country library she had ever seen.� By 1924, use of the library had waned and the trustees of the Roslyn Circulating Library Association were having a hard time maintaining the building and operating the library. At the same time, the circulating library organized by the Roslyn Neighborhood Association in 1917 had outgrown its space at the Neighborhood House (Valentine House) on Paper Mill Road. The trustees of the two associations voted to merge the two libraries, and the library reorganized under the name “Bryant Library� in 1924. The library received a provisional charter from the New York State Board of Regents to provide library services to any resident of Roslyn School District #3 in 1945. An absolute

charter was granted in 1950. In 1946, Bryant Hall was condemned and demolished by New York State to make way for a bridge over Hempstead Harbor. While the library board and residents debated the best location for a new library building, library services were provided ďŹ rst at several storefront locations in Roslyn Heights. In 1951, the Bryant Circulating Library Association accepted the Roslyn Neighborhood Association’s donation of the War Memorial Building on East Broadway. Designed by Frederick M. Godwin, great-grandson on William Cullen Bryant, the War Memorial Building had been dedicated in 1921 as a memorial to Roslyn soldiers who fought in World War I, and had served as a community center for Roslyn residents until 1935, when it was remodeled as a 500-seat playhouse. The Bryant Library opened in its new home in March 1952. Roslyn experienced a population surge between 1950 and 1955. To accommodate increased usage, the library underwent both physical and operational changes in 1956. Structural work completed to strengthen the foundation and make the basement usable resulted in removal of the terrace and balustrade that originally fronted the building, but allowed for creation of book stacks and a Children’s Room in the basement. The Bryant Memorial Reading Room, which also housed the Reference department, opened to the public in 1957. The library joined the Nassau Library System in 1960, providing patrons with access to specialized reference collections and interlibrary loan. Following defeat of its 1966 proposal to demolish the War Memorial Building and construct a new building, the library board established a citizen’s advisory committee and retained a professional library building consultant to reassess ways to expand the library. In October 1967, voters approved the board’s proposal to move the Valentine House (which had served as Roslyn Village Hall since 1962) across Paper Mill Road and to construct a two-story 10,000 square foot addition on the west side of the War Memorial Building. The groundbreaking for the expansion took place in November 1968. The new building opened in January 1970 with an expanded adult reading room on the middle level, a meeting room on the upper level and a new children’s room on the lower level. The Bryant Library continues to serve the residents of School District #3 and beyond, oering extensive programming for adults, young adults and children, providing patrons with the latest in information technology, and facilitating research into the history of the greater Roslyn area through the Bryant Library Local History Collection. Roslyn was among the 1st places settled BY H A R R I S ON M A R D E R The history of Roslyn dates back to 1643, when Robert Fordham and John Carmen sailed across the Long Island Sound from Connecticut and landed in Hempstead Harbor. A year later, more settlers from Connecticut arrived and decided to stay in the Hempstead Harbor area. Much has changed since Fordham and Carmen’s voyage all those years ago. Here is a brief history of how Roslyn came to be. Roslyn’s oldest remaining building, the Van-Nostrand Starkins house, was built in 1680. It was purchased by blacksmith Joseph Starkins in 1795. The oneand-a-half story clapboard structure currently serves as a museum. Hendrick Onderdonk built and opened a mill dam and paper mill in Hempstead Harbor in 1773. Onderdonk’s paper mill was the first paper mill on Long Island. Prior to opening the paper mill, Onderdonk was in charge of Hempstead Harbor’s first gristmill in the 1750s. President George Washington visited Hempstead Harbor during his five-day tour of Long Island in 1790. During his visit, Washington had breakfast with Onderdonk. Washington even mentioned Onderdonk’s gristmill and paper mill in a diary entry about his visit to Hempstead Harbor. Onderdonk died in 1809. His former home is still standing and has evolved into the George Washington Manor Restaurant. The original gristmill sits to the east of the restaurant. Onderdonk’s original paper mill was torn down in 1915, but a replica building was built in its place on Paper Mill Road that same year. The replica building served as the headquarters for the Red Cross and the American Legion. The first post office in Hempstead Harbor was established in 1838. Hempstead Harbor was renamed Roslyn on Sept. 7, 1844. The area was renamed due to postal confusion regarding several other “Hempstead’s” that were spread across Long Island. In 1852, Roslyn’s first fire company was founded. Roslyn Cemetery was founded in 1861. Roslyn’s first school was built on Old Northern Boulevard in 1863. The Long Island Railroad first reached Roslyn in 1864. Roslyn Savings Bank, the first savings bank in Nassau County, was opened in 1876. William Cullen Bryant, long-time editor of the New York Evening Post and Roslyn resident, died in 1878. He was buried in Roslyn Cemetery. Two years prior to his death, Bryant was involved in the building of the “Reading Room,” a place for Roslyn residents to gather in the evenings. The “Reading Room” was renamed Bryant Library in
1878. One of Roslyn’s most prominent landmarks, the Ellen E. Ward Memorial Clocktower, was erected in 1895. The clocktower, which is located at the intersection of Main Street and Old Northern Boulevard, is built of random ashlar granite and limestone trim. Street lights were first installed in Roslyn in 1901. Roslyn Boy Scout Troop #1 was established in 1911, the first Boy Scout Troop in Nassau County. In 1912, ROSLYN Visiting Nurse Association was formed. This was the first organization of its kind on Long Island located east of Flushing. Roslyn High School was built on Roslyn Road in 1925. The land for the school was given by C.H. Mackay, the owner of the “Harbor Hill” estate. Mackay, who inherited a vast silver fortune when his father passed away, died in 1938. The Villages of East Hills, Roslyn Estates and Roslyn Harbor were incorporated in 1931. The Village of Roslyn was incorporated the following year, 1932. The congregation at Temple Sinai formed in 1947. It was the first Jewish congregation in Roslyn. Temple Beth Sholom was built in 1951. Roslyn Junior High School was opened in 1957. The Harbor Hill School opened in 1961. Christopher Morley died in 1957. Morley was well-known for his building his writing studio in Roslyn, which was known as “The Knothole.” In 1961, the Christopher Morley Knothole Association was formed to save Morley’s writing studio. A new Nassau County Park was named after Morley in 1963. Morley was buried in Roslyn Cemetery. The villages of Roslyn celebrated their 50th anniversary of incorporation in 1982. Four years later, in 1986, ROSLYN Community Center was opened. A new Village Hall was built by Roslyn Village in 1994 and was opened in 1995. Cedarmere, the former home of Bryant, opened as a museum in 1995. Janet Galante was elected the first female mayor of Roslyn Village in 1995. In 2004, the same year that ROSLYN School District celebrated the 100th anniversary of Roslyn High School, the Nassau County District Attorney began an investigation into missing funds from the district. Ground was broken for The Park at East Hills in 2004. The park held its opening day in 2006. A historic marker was placed at Cedarmere in 2013. This marker came four years after Cedarmere was closed to the public by Nassau County in 2009. Despite being a small village of less than 3,000 residents, Roslyn has certainly seen its fair share of historical moments.

A fire company for Roslyn Heights At the beginning of the 20th century small towns and cities alike were noticing a need for rapid-ďŹ re protection in their areas. Big cities were changing from volunteer departments to the paid ones they have today. Roslyn Heights was no dierent in this ever-changing world. Roslyn Heights, which was known as the Highlands, was a small community located just south of the village of Roslyn. A small group of citizens decided it was time the people living “up the hillâ€? had its own ďŹ re protection. Roslyn Highlands was being developed and growing into a community of its own. The principal credit that was given for initiating the movement belonged to Henry L. Atwood, Frank Cody, Station Agent, and Monroe S. Wood the town clerk. On the evening of Oct. 9, 1905, this group of citizens met at Atwoods Hall to organize a Fire Company. The proposition to establish the new Company did not meet with universal encouragement, however these men, along with 20 others completed the formalities of incorporation and became; “The Roslyn Highlands Hook and Ladder, Engine and Hose Companyâ€?. The new company had an organization, however they had to provide it with apparatus and a ďŹ rehouse. The only funds available were contributions by the members and their friends, there were no regular monies allotted to the company in forms ďŹ re taxes, as there is today. Also the only water supply came from wells or cisterns. For the ďŹ rst few months’ weekly meetings were held, and the membership grew rapidly. The meeting place was designated at Atwoods Hall, which was on the now non existing southern end of Railroad Ave. This area is now operated by the Town of North Hempstead, and is used as a parking lot on the west side of Roslyn’s Long Island Railroad Station. Committees were formed and the members began alleviating the countless problems that lay ahead. Obtaining apparatus, equipment, uniforms, creating a treasury and locating property for a ďŹ rehouse were on the top of the list. Money was raised by the membership in many ways for these ventures. An initiation fee of $2 was required with each application; monthly dues of 25 cents per member and ďŹ nes for missing meetings were imposed. The subscription committee started raising donations from the community. The company held dinners, picnics, dances, card parties and other forms of profitable entertainment. Soon they had raised over $700 to begin the treasury. Membership was also growing rapidly, at the December 1905 meeting, 33 new members were accepted. The apparatus committee visited several ďŹ re companies in the New York area to purchase a used ďŹ re pump. The committee ďŹ nally agreed to pur-
chase a horse drawn chemical engine for $1000 from Chemical Engine Company No. 6 of West Brighton Staten Island. The treasurer, Theodore S. Valentine, gave his personal check to purchase the apparatus pending the formal action of the company. The company decided to house this engine under Atwoods Hall. The company realized that they were ďŹ ghting ďŹ res without a ďŹ rehouse for long enough. In May of 1906, 3 lots on the northwest corner of Garden Street and St. Marks Place were being considered for purchase. The members had diďŹƒculty acquiring this land because the owners would not sell to the Fire Company. Finally one of the members, Mr. Lambert, purchased the property, sold it to Mr. Birdsall, another member, and he in turn sold it to the ďŹ re company for $605. Fighting ďŹ res and responding to alarms have come a long way since the early days of the company. Upon receipt of a ďŹ re alarm the ďŹ rst arriving member to the ďŹ rehouse was to strike a suspended piece of rounded railroad rail with a hammer for ten minutes to alert the remaining membership. The next group of ďŹ remen commandeered the ďŹ rst team of horses they could ďŹ nd and subsequently hitched them to the ďŹ re engine and respond to the ďŹ re. The owner of the horses was paid $5 for the Company’s use of the team. In 1909, the railroad rail was replaced with a bell purchased from the Woodhouse Co. This bell now hangs in the tower of the present ďŹ rehouse. Finally the current siren replaced the bell in 1923 to alert members. The Roslyn Water District was founded in 1910, and a water supply for ďŹ re ďŹ ghting soon followed. In 1913, the Town of North Hempstead contracted with the company to provide ďŹ re protection for $700 a year. A motorized Garford engine was purchased in 1916; followed by a Stutz in 1925 and a Seagrave in 1929. The ďŹ re company tried for years to expand the building but WW I and WW II made expansion diďŹƒcult. The original ďŹ rehouse was demolished and a new building was constructed in 1951. It contained two bays and a larger meeting room. Then in 1958 two more bays were added. Additional property was acquired in East Hills 1964 for the addition of a substation. During this time, the apparatus were upgraded and new, state of the art, equipment was added. The 1980s brought more changes, the Company initiated steps to acquire new or additional property for its headquarters. Property was purchased from Urban Renewal on the east side of St. Marks Place between Warner Ave. and Garden St., directly adjacent to the company’s original location. On May 17, 1986 a new much larger headquarters was dedicated. The designers of the new building received Architectural
awards for this design of the Company’s current Headquarters. Other developments soon followed, the second oor was expanded, and a ďŹ fth truck bay was added. Substation 2 was also extended to allow for larger pieces of equipment.
During the 1970s the ďŹ re company felt a need to provide emergency medical services to the community. The Highlands along with Roslyn Rescue have since been oering pre-hospital care to citizens of the Roslyn Fire District. During its existence the Fire Company has responded to numerous major ďŹ res in the district as well as assisting other communities. The Avianca plane crash, the Bayville Northeaster, the wild ďŹ res in West Hampton and the World Trade Center on 9/11/01 have been just some of the alarms the company has assisted with in search and rescue eorts. Numerous unit citations, individual awards, as well as parade and drill trophies have been awarded to the company over the years. Today The Roslyn Highlands Hook and Ladder, Engine and Hose Company have an active, all volunteer, membership of 115 members.
