TOWN HALL CONSTRUCTION, MANHASSET, 1906. On May 23, 1905, the town board held a meeting to decide which village, among Mineola, Manhasset, and Roslyn, would have the new town hall. After five ballots, Roslyn and Manhasset were tied with three votes each. On the sixth ballot, Manhasset was declared the winner, with four votes to Roslyn’s two. The Plandome Road site was chosen because of its central location and proximity to the railroad station across the street. Luther Birdsall of Roslyn was selected as the architect. Workers from Smull & Walsh of Port Washington are seen here clearing the land and building sidewalks. (Courtesy of North Hempstead Archives.)

Cedarmere Museum & Preserve Cedarmere, the country home of prominent 19th-century poet, newspaper editor, and civic leader William Cullen Bryant, is a 7-acre site on the west side of Bryant Avenue in the Village of Roslyn Harbor. The property has a pond, boathouse, house, mill, gardens, and a spectacular landscaped designed by Bryant. Here, Bryant sought sanctuary from the congestion on chaos of the city, where he could rest, work on his poetry, and spend time surrounded by nature. Originally used as a settlement in the early 17th Century, Richard Kirk, a Quaker farmer, owned the property and in 1787 built the original house. The property passed to William Hicks and, in 1836, to Joseph A. Moulton. William Cullen Bryant purchased the 40 acre property in 1843,

GUIDE TO M A NH ASSE T • NOVEMBER 13, 2020

naming it Cedarmere after the cedar trees which ringed the ponds (or “mereâ€? as it was then called). Throughout the 1840s and 1860s, Bryant purchased additional land and expanded the main house. The original house was altered by Bryant several times with the most extensive renovations taking place in 1860. After his death, the house was passed on to his younger daughter Julia, who in turn sold it to her sister’s son Harold Godwin in 1891. After a house ďŹ re in 1902, Godwin rebuilt the home in 1903 keeping the same basic form as the old house but making several changes. Following Godwin’s death in 1931, Cedarmere passed ďŹ rst to his wife and then his daughter Elizabeth Love Godwin, who bequeathed it to Nassau County in 1975. Manhasset and the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race BY H OWA R D KROPLICK founder and owner of Vanderbiltcupraces.com At the turn of the 20th century the superiority of European automotive craftsmanship cast

a long shadow over America’s fledgling car industry. To encourage American automobile manufacturers to challenge European quality, 26-year old William K. Vanderbilt Jr., heir to a railroad fortune and a pioneer race car driver, organized America’s first

international road race, modeled after those held in Europe. The six Vanderbilt Cup Races held on Long Island from 1904 to 1910 were the greatest sporting events of their day. These colorful, exciting, and dangerous races drew huge crowds from 25,000 to over 250,000 spectators. 1906 was the only time the Vanderbilt Cup Races ran through Manhasset Valley. The FlushingNorth Hempstead Turnpike (now

Northern Boulevard) was the main business street of the village in 1906 prior to the extension of the LIRR to Plandome Road. The primary grandstand for the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup Race was at the Start/Finish Line on Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. As seen here, a second grandstand with a capacity of 500 spectators was built in Manhasset. Another exciting location to watch the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup

Race was Manhasset Hill (Spinney Hill), located now at the intersection of Northern Boulevard and East Shore Road/Community Drive. "Perhaps the most beautiful section of the Vanderbilt Cup course, from a scenic point of view, is the double hill at Manhasset, where the road dips into a hollow and then winds up in a sinuous course to the Lakeville Road." The Automobile, Octob17, 1906

Roslyn Heights Funeral Home

ADVERTORIAL

Ask the Funeral Director… By Joseph Velotti, Funeral Director Roslyn Heights Funeral Home

Preplanning a funeral is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most important decisions you will make in your lifetime. Whether it is for you or a loved one, the first step is obtaining all the necessary information to make an informed decision. More and more people are choosing to preplan/prepay their funeral and burial expenses. In doing so, they recognize that it is smart financial planning and provides great emotional relief for themselves and their loved ones. Prepaying your funeral will allow you to make your own funeral plans, but, more importantly, preplanning will spare surviving relatives and loved ones from the emotional burden of having to make decisions at a time of great stress and grief. The most common questions people ask when they are considering preplanning their funeral arrangements are:

We are proud to announce a major renovation to our facility. Our promise is to provide the upmost attention to detail to your family. Your family will receive concierge like service in an elegant home like surrounding. We offer a complete range of affordable, quality services from Traditional Funerals to Simple Cremation.

#1. Why Pre Plan at all? • Allows individuals the opportunity to make personal and specific selections for the funeral service that most closely meets their needs. • Spares loved ones from having to second-guess the wishes of the deceased at the time of need. • Allows for time to research funeral homes, burial options, and financial considerations; • Provides an option to set aside funds for final expenses, relieving family members of an unexpected financial burden. #2. Why Pre Pay for my arrangements? • Placing the cost of the funeral (at today's prices) in an investment vehicle, so that the interest earned will keep pace with inflation to cover the cost of the funeral (at future prices) when the death occurs. • Prevents life insurance policies from being depleted at the time of a loved one's death. • Allows individuals to consider options while they are better prepared to make sound, fiscally responsible decisions. • Spares loved ones the unexpected cost of a funeral during a stressful time. Roslyn Heights Funeral Home offers price guaranteed pre-arrangement thru PREPLAN a funeral trust pre-funding program backed by the NYS Funeral Directors Association, Inc. call 516-621-4545 for more information.

History of the Onderdonk House

H

oratio Gates Onderdonk was born on August 14, 1808, at Cow Neck (today Port Washington) and died April 6, 1886 in Manhasset. He was the son of Joseph and Dorothy (Monfort) Onderdonk; he graduated from Columbia College in 1829 and married Elizabeth Schenk Onderdonk (his cousin) on January 23, 1830. They had six children: Sarah (b. 1831), Maria (b. 1832), Josephine (b. 1835), Annie (b. 1839), Catherine (b. 1841) and Andrew J. (b. 1847). Horatio Gates Onderdonk is said to have pursued mercantile interests in N.Y.C. after graduation from college, but studied law soon thereafter and was admitted to the bar. He maintained offices in N.Y.C. and at his residence in Manhasset. He was appointed county judge of Kings County by Governor Marcy. A Democrat, he attended the Reform Dutch Church in his community where the Onderdonk family plot is still located. By 1836, the presumed year of construction of the Onderdonk house, Horatio and Elizabeth Onderdonk had three children. One of these, Maria, is presumed to

have Died in childhood. Each of the others lived to adulthood and all but Anna are known to have married. The youngest, and only son, Andrew J., would inherit the house. While following in his father’s footsteps professionally, Andrew

remained childless and the house was later inherited by a nephew, George O. Linkletter. By 1933, the Onderdonk farm was purchased for development by Levitt and Sons who soon after built North Strathmore on 46 acres bordering the north side of Northern Bou-

levard. The house itself served as an office facility for the development, until the formation of the Strathmore Association, a membership organization composed of the owners of Strathmore property. The house and four corner plots adjoining “The Circle” were

conveyed to the association on December 3, 1936, and the property has been maintained by the Strathmore Association since that time. Onderdonk House History: It is said, that the Horatio G. Onderdonk House in Manhasset is one of Long Island’s finest Greek Revival dwellings. It was recorded by the Historic American Buildings Survey in 1936 and entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The house is recognized as a Town of Hempstead landmark. Owned and operated by the Strathmore Association Inc., since 1936, has undergone partial restoration in recent years. When the Onderdonk House was built in c. 1836, it was representative of a class of dwelling being built elsewhere on Long Island and in other localities within an easy commute of New York City. Many of these houses are now gone, giving the Onderdonk House added significance as one of the few examples of its type, left standing today. History Center at the Manhasset Public Library The Center was created in 2015 under the direction of Library Director Maggie Gough and it is open to the public on Saturdays 12:00 noon to 5:00pm. The mission of the History Center is to advance scholarship and teaching by committing itself to the preservation of historic documents and dissemination of knowledge. In the absence of a Historical Society in the Town of North Hempstead and based on the material we house, the History Center at the Manhasset Public Library has become a portal to the Town’s history through a variety of programs such as presentations, events, exhibitions, and articles. Our current collection consists of 41boxes (20 linear feet) of material,

1,008 books and 23 maps/drawings documenting all aspects of Manhasset history such as: homesteads, schools, prominent families, history of the area, religion, Long Island Rail Road, Veteran Necrology of American Legion Post No. 304; maps and plans of Manhasset; photographs; rare books, school journals; and artifacts of Manhasset residents including a lace collar of author Frances Hodgson Burnett, who was a prominent resident of Manhasset. Archivist Antonia Mattheou was hired to process the collection and be responsible for its physical and intellectual maintenance. It is the policy of the repository to make its collections available to the residents of Manhasset, the broader academ-

ic community, and the general public for teaching, research, and publication. In doing so, the History Center reflects the vision of the Manhasset Public Library and New York State Office of Cultural Education “to better serve the ever growing need of enhancing education techniques by using primary sources.” In January of 2017, the History Center became a member of the New York Heritage Digital Collections Program. We started digitizing our collections using ContentDM, a digital collection management software founded in the 1960s by the OCLC (online catalogue library consortium.) Through digitization our archival holdings are readily available to our immediate and worldwide audience.

Individual assistance is provided to our patrons through the services of our Archivist, Antonia Mattheou, who is onsite on Saturdays from 12-5pm. Please call ahead for an appointment and leave a message with the librarians at 516-6262300 x.201.
