he Manhasset Public Library possesses a unique and distinctive collection of original materials pertaining to the history of this area such as print, photos, books and newspapers. Through implementing the Manhasset Library History Center in 2015, we opened our archival collections to our community and beyond! The History Center provides opportunities for patrons, students and scholars to work with primary documents in both physical and electronic (online) formats. The History Center mounts displays in the Library entrance lobby. Our current exhibit, “Life Around Manhasset Bay” uses beautifully reproduced archival material and community contributions to explore the following topics: Industry around our harbors (whaling, shell fishing, shipbuilding and marinas), Sports, recreation, social life (sailing, yacht clubs) and historic homes and their owners. A history of the Manhasset Library Compiled by Florine Polner, 2007 1910: Andres J. Onderdonk attempts to buy property on Northern Blvd. and Plandome Road to build a civic center and library as a memorial to his sisters. Because of difficulty in coming to an understanding with the owners of the property, the idea does not come to fruition. 1935: Elizabeth A. Bliss revives interest in a library by contacting several wealthy residents to establish a privately endowed institution. As a result, interest in establishing a library is revived. 1936-37: Mitchell Luther carries on extensive research as to types of libraries, costs, locations, personnel and equipment Headquarters are set up at 351 Plandome Road. 1937-38: A survey about the feelings for or against a new library is generally favorable. The plan is to create an Association Library by collection of monies from private individuals. Later, it would become a Public Library, supported by the taxpayers. By January 1938 more than 200 sponsors have agreed to money donations and plans get underway with Mitchell Luther as chairman. 1938: After various benefits are held in the community, interest is high and the actual drive is postponed until February 1938 to allow for proper organization of forces. Feelings shift from an Association Library to a Public Library entirely supported by taxes. This decision is made only three weeks before the vote and there is not time to lay the matter before the public, but it is decided to go ahead with the vote anyway. June 14 1938: A vote is held for the proposition of the Library. It is turned down by a vote of 24Z against and 86 for. One problem was the last minute change from an Association to a Public Library; another was that many new families in the town felt that their current taxes were already all they could handle. The committee, however, continues to meet and to publicize the need for a library in Manhasset. 1942-44: It is felt that sufficient interest exists for a new Library, so the committee begins to marshal its forces once again. The North Shore branch of the American Association of University Women, the Manhasset Kiwanis Club and the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce declare their interest in the project. In December 1944 a meeting is held at the home of the Rev. Oscar Maddaus, which includes representatives from all the organizations and churches in Manhasset. The AAUW agrees to sponsor the new movement and the old group, headed by Mr. Luther, agrees to work with the new group March 1946: The new Manhasset Public Library opens in a rented store on Plandome Road with an initial book collection of 1,500 volumes and two small reading tables. Manhasset’s population is 13,000. Ruth Cowell is the first Library Director. In the first month 631 borrowers register and 915 books are loaned. October 1950: The Library serves a pop-

ulation of 14,000 and has 3,339 registered borrowers. Books number 10,573 volumes with an annual circulation of 48,350 books. The trustees propose a permanent home for the Manhasset Public Library on a sit on Onderdonk Ave., which was acquired in 1949 as a gift from Sol G. Atlas. The cost of the bond issue will be $150,000.
January 18, 1965: A referendum for $60,000 to purchase property adjoining the Library for additional parking space is approved.
of building a new Library. A referendum will be held for $13.6 million. Public meetings are held for the purpose of presenting the plans for a new Library to the public. There is controversy in the community regarding both the need for a new library and the cost. A referendum vote is held. 3,255 votes are cast and the referendum is defeated by 33 votes, 1,611for and 1,644 against. The Board of Trustees reviews ways to provide an improved Library facility at a lower cost. Three citizen advisory committees are formed to advise the Board and to make recommendations. Controversy continues through letters to the Manhasset Press and with elections of new Trustees. The Board of Trustees considers two sites for a possible new building: Christ Church Parish Hall and the Village Bath Club. Appraisals of both properties are commissioned. Environmental assessment of the Village Bath Club is initiated and architectural firm of Beatty, Harvey and Assoc. are hired to prepare a Feasibility Study. Focus groups are organized and their first meeting takes place on November 29. Christ Church Parish House site is chosen for a new library. Preliminary estimate for building a new Library is $9 million. Trustees go ahead with Phase I environmental study and traffic assessment of the site. Library bid of $2.65 million for the Christ Church property is accepted. Public meeting is held on February 11, attracting a standing-room-only crowd. Ruth Cowell, the first Director of the Library, dies in Longwood, Florida at the age of 85.
September 1, 1972: Director Ruth Cowell retires. She is succeeded by Elaine Seaton who serves as Director until 1982.
March - June 1995: Controversy continues as residents air their feelings both pro and con in The Manhasset Press.
October 24, 1950: A vote is held for the Library proposition. The referendum passes. July 1952: The new Library building opens on Onderdonk Avenue. Plans call for the development of the unfinished basement area in the early 1960’s to bring book capacity up to 60,000 volumes and reader seating to 100. October 1960: The Board of Trustees proposes a plan for the completion of the Library. There are now 7,250 borrowers, 33,300 books and circulation is up to 131,000. The basement area will be utilized for a new Children’s Room and additional shelving for adult books. Air conditioning will be installed. The cost will be approximately $165,000. October 27, 1960: A vote is held to vote on the proposition. The proposition passed. 1962: The library expansion is completed.
1973: Sunday openings begin. 1974: The Friends of the Manhasset Public Library is organized. September 1981: 516 votes are cast in a Referendum for $495,000 to provide a meeting room below ground level. The Referendum is approved, 297 to 219. 1982: Sylvia Levin is appointed Director of the Library. September 1983 The new Community/Meeting Room opens. February 4, 1995: The Library celebrates its 40’h anniversary by dedicating the Reading Patio in remembrance of Donald Richardson of Greentree Estates. There is also a party and the premier presentation of A Cantata in Praise of Books by Jeanne Singer. The Library now has a collection of 90,000 books 7,200 records and cassettes, 326 magazines, 18 newspapers, and 15, 800 pamphlets Reference librarians answer over 24,500 questions every year. 17,000 people attend nearly 700 library programs in the Community Room. Marian P. Robertson is appointed Director of the Library. The Trustees sign an agreement for the Library to purchase the property where the Christ Church Parish stands for the purpose
May 21, 1995: Library celebrates its anniversary with a gala Street Fair with a kickoff parade from the train station. Master of Ceremonies, Ken Howard, presides over a party which includes a used book sale, music, raffles, children’s activities, a photo exhibit and refreshments. June 2000: Trustees hold an open house to answer questions from the community concerning a new building. Referendum vote for $8.8 million new Library is held in the Community Room. 2,810 votes are cast. Referendum is rejected by 48 votes, 1,429 against, 1,381 for. At their monthly meeting, Trustees announce that they will try to improve the present building as much as possible, but warn that results will be less than satisfactory. Library officially goes online. Card catalog is dismantled in favor of four online computers for public use. Trustees consider various options to expand and update present building. Trustees again present residents with four choices for solutions to the library space problem: Repair the current building, repair and expand the current building, try again for the Christ Church property, or build a joint library with North Hills. A mailing outlining these options is mailed to the community.

Open forums are held at the Library to answer questions about the future of the Library. It is decided to again pursue the Christ Church option. Christ Church offer is withdrawn. Library space problem is temporarily put on hold, pending reassessment of the options. Library now has 130,000 books, 13,312 audio/visual materials, 379 titles of magazines and newspapers. There are 7, 471 registered borrowers. Circulation for the year is 185,779, and 19,722 reference questions were answered in the last year. 292 programs are held and attendance at these programs numbers 18,846. Board of Trustees continues to explore alternatives for upgrading the present Library building. August 2004: Trustees seek residents input on four new proposals for the Library: Repair and expand the present building adding 9,600 sq. ft. and additional parking at an approximate cost of $1 million, rebuild ihe existing building, enlarging it to 32,000 sq. ft. at a cost of $12.8 million, build a new Library on the adjacent Adam Art site at a cost of $14.5 million, or build a new Library at the old Village Bath Club at a cost of $14.5 million. Controversy reigns as residents express their opinions in The Manhasset Press. Sabena Airlines building on Northern Blvd. is offered for sale to the Library. Public forums are held to examine options for new building. Trustees decide to develop a design for a new building on the site of Adam Art. It will be approximately 32,000 sq.ft. and will have parking for 95 cars at an estimated cost of $15 million. Trustees move ahead on plan for new building. Space planner is consulted, architects are developing a plan, Environmental Quality Review has been conducted, Traffic study has been completed, and negotiations are in progress for the purchase of the Brown property, currently leased by Adam Art. Trustees present its plan for a new Manhasset Library at a meeting on June 11. A public referendum will be held. There will be 92 parking spaces, and the building will total approximately 38,700 sq. ft. on four levels, one below ground and three above with a total cost of $17.8 million, with $16.8 million financed with a tax-exempt bond issue and the rest taken from the Library’s reserve fund. Library building closes in Oct 26 to remove mold that has been discovered in several areas. Library reopens on Nov. 5. Community Room sustains water damage and closes for cleanup and installation of new carpeting. Trustees hold two public meetings to discuss the proposed new building. Manhasset residents continue to express their opinions, both pro and con in The Manhasset Press.The referendum is set for March 19. The vote is successful, 2371 in favor and 1041 against. History of Plandome Fire Department
T
he volunteer fire service was first organized in Plandome under a plan adopted by the village board in 1913. The men of the village were arranged into six squads, each of sufficient number to move and operate the fire fighting equipment. They appointed a fire chief, and captains were named to head up each squad. The assembled squads were known as the Plandome Hose and Chemical Company. Their hand-drawn fire apparatus was limited to a single hose reel and a chemical engine, which was essentially a fortygallon soda-acid fire extinguisher. Both carts were stored in the basement of the village hall. The fire alarm was the split ring iron gong that still stands today, suspended between two locust posts on the north side of the building.
One squad at a time served as the designated “alarm” squad with the duty rotating monthly. Residents were instructed that the captain of the duty squad “should be notified at once of any fire”. The duty captain would then hustle to the village hall and sound the alarm by striking the ring with a hammer kept there for that purpose. His squad was to report there and pull the two carts to the fire, while the others assembled at the scene. This plan proved to be woefully inadequate. Over the next several years the Manhasset Fire Company responded to each of the five house fires that occurred in the village. Residents felt dependent on Manhasset to cover any serious fire in Plandome, and by 1920 many were urging that the arrangement should be formalized. Finally, the board took up the issue

with vigor. They scheduled a special meeting with all male residents requested to attend and discuss how to provide fire protection for the village. Notice of this meeting seemed to reinvigorate the self-reliant nature of Plandome’s citizenry. In the words of one: “Let us organize the fire department first. We cannot depend on outsiders.” The meeting on Dec. 11, 1920 set in motion a total remake. A committee was appointed to properly organize the volunteer fire department, purchase a motorized fire truck, and install an electric fire siren. Funds would be solicited from the residents by subscription to a fire protection fund. Within two months, most of that was accomplished. The keystone event took place on Feb. 12, 1921 at a beefsteak dinner hosted by trustee Jesse Ricks. With the Village officials and all who volunteered to serve in attendance, the occasion was declared a “special meeting of the fire department”. The board appointed a fire chief and treasurer for the new organization and officially designated all who attended as its members. During the next few years the foundational structure of the Plandome Fire De-
partment took shape. Originally funded only by contributions, the department was fully integrated as an agency of the village in 1925. The board assumed its proper statutory role for supervision of the department and appointed its first fire commissioner to direct that function. Over the first half-century, there were several down turns when participation ebbed and the Department came close to collapse. But each time, 1927, 1936, and again in 1959, whenever alternatives for fire service coverage were suggested, Plandome volunteers rose up and said, “we can do this ourselves.” Through the last fifty years, that attitude and dedication has continued to improve the department professionally and technically. What began as a loosely formed brigade, with primitive hand-drawn equipment, evolved into a highly developed organization operating sophisticated 15-ton engines. Cedarmere Museum & Preserve Cedarmere, the country home of prominent 19th-century poet, newspaper editor, and civic leader William Cullen Bryant, is a 7-acre site on the west side of Bryant Avenue in the Village of Roslyn Harbor. The property has a pond, boathouse, house, mill, gardens, and a spectacular landscaped designed by Bryant. Here, Bryant sought sanctuary from the congestion on chaos of the city, where he could rest, work on his poetry, and spend time surrounded by nature. Originally used as a settlement in the early 17th Century, Richard Kirk, a Quaker farmer, owned the property and in 1787 built the original house. The property passed to William Hicks and, in 1836, to Joseph A. Moulton. William Cullen Bryant purchased the 40 acre property in 1843,

naming it Cedarmere after the cedar trees which ringed the ponds (or “mere” as it was then called). Throughout the 1840s and 1860s, Bryant purchased additional land and expanded the main house. The original house was altered by Bryant several times with the most extensive renovations taking place in 1860. After his death, the house was passed on to his younger daughter Julia, who in turn sold it to her sister’s son Harold Godwin in 1891. After a house fire in 1902, Godwin rebuilt the home in 1903 keeping the same basic form as the old house but making several changes. Following Godwin’s death in 1931, Cedarmere passed first to his wife and then his daughter Elizabeth Love Godwin, who bequeathed it to Nassau County in 1975.
