Great Neck: A special place to live BY B I LL SAN ANTONIO When the Native American tribe of the Mattinecock first settled in what is now northwest Nassau County hundreds of years ago, they called the region “Menhaden-Ock,” likely due to the large fish population that swam the surrounding waters. Legend has it that when European settlers later arrived in the 1640s, “Menhaden-Ock” became “Madnan’s Neck,” after local woman Anne “Nan” Hutchinson unsuccessfully tried to take over modern-day Kings Point.

Her vicious temper even earned her the nickname “Mad Nan.” But before long, another name emerged that has come to define the area in the latter centuries - Great Neck. The Gold Coast community became a staple of the lavish parties and high-class North Shore living during the Roaring Twenties, with Kings Point providing the backdrop for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s celebrated 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby,” as West Egg, countering the posh East Egg of Port Washington’s Manorhaven. Great Neck, to Fitzgerald, symbolized the era’s decadence,
seeping from New York City to its surrounding suburbs as America hurtled toward seemingly inevitable depression. Incidentally, Great Neck is among the first communities one encounters when entering Long Island. Occupying approximately 1.4 square miles, its nine villages and four unincorporated areas have long been a hot bed for economic and housing growth. While its permanent Manhattan headquarters were being constructed in the 1940s, the United Nations took up residency in Great Neck, further diversifying an area borne of Native
Americans and reared by the Dutch and English. Today, Great Neck has become known primarily for its myriad of Jewish heritages, beginning with the Second World War’s influx of Ashkenazi Jews and later an influx of Iranian Jews fleeing the 1979 Islamic Revolution as well as, more recently, the Orthodox, Reform and Conservative sects. And aside from the wealthy Jay Gatsby and his confidante Nick Carraway, Great Neck has also been home to plenty of beloved celebrities, from comedy legends Sid Caesar and the Marx Brothers to Olympic figure skaters Sarah and Emily Hughes and “60 Minutes” correspondent Bob Simon, among others. With its 35-minute train ride to Manhattan, and proximity to the Q10 and Q46 New York City bus lines, it’s no wonder Great Neck has also become a convenient base for the rich and famous, or a logical location for developers to jumpstart the real estate market. The advent of telephone service out to Great Neck and the birth of the Long Island Railroad in the mid 1920s made the Gold Coast more accessible than ever before, sparking suburban expansion decades before Levittown was established on the back of the G.I. Bill. Large-scale developments

were planned and constructed, with many low-income residents lured to occupy them. But as the Great Depression hit, so too were other projects in development, halting the growth of the newly-incorporated Village of Great Neck Plaza, which is now considered the epicenter of the community. Just as Great Neck has endured hard times, it continues to work toward a brighter tomorrow. The Great Neck School District has long been regarded among the best in the northeast, from a 1952 Life Magazine profile about progressive classroom habits to the Intel Science Talent Search and National Merit Scholarship finalists and semifinalists that seem to emerge every year. The Great Neck Public Library is amid a major renovation of its Main Branch, funded by a $10.4 million bond approved by voters. Great Neck residents also play a major role within the Town of North Hempstead, Nassau County and New York state governments. They’re the doctors, nurses and administrators that run the North Shore-LIJ Health System. They run businesses and teach your children. But, perhaps most significantly, they’re the ones who will ensure that Great Neck’s future is as illustrious as its past.

Looking back: The rich history of Great Neck Library Three women, Mrs. William Onderdonk, Louise Skidmore and Mrs. M. P. Baker, founded the Great Neck Library in 1888 with only $100. The library’s original home was the telegraph office and the telegraph operator’s mother served as librarian. On Feb. 19, 1889, with 102 books and 40 subscribers, the library was formally incorporated in what was then the County of Queens as a private association library. The library sought to serve the roughly 1,000 residents of Great Neck. The six self-elected members of the Board of Directors were the Rev. Louis deCormis, president; Louise Udall Skidmore, secretary; Helen Merritt, treasurer; Harriet S. Onderdonk; Charles Gignoux; and Edward Morgan. The founders believed the influence of a good library molds and refines people into “noble men and women.” Until 1990, the library censored books they thought were considered “unwholesome,” such as the “The Three Musketeers.” The library derived its income from membership dues and subscription fees. Membership was $10 per family and by board approval. In 1921, the fee was reduced to $1. By 1892, women had replaced the gentlemen on the Board of Directors. They set on a task to build a free library. The library moved to a room in the League Building from 1892-1907, a young men’s social club near 540 Middle Neck Road. By 1900, as noted in the librarian’s report, the library was growing in “importance as part of the village life and

has its place as surely as the school or even the church.” Louise Eldridge, secretary of the Library Board of the time, and her husband became the library’s benefactors by erecting and donating a new building on Arrandale Avenue, next to the Arrandale Schoolhouse. In its first year, the Arrandale Library recorded a collection of 2,500 books, circulation of 5,000 and a membership of 252. Within two years of the opening of the Arrandale building, circulation doubled to over 10,000 books a year. The board purchased books of all kinds and published lists of newly acquired titles in the local newspaper. In 1928, the library finally became fully tax-supported. The Station Branch officially opened in January
1923. In 1930, a new children’s room, reference room and two floors of stacks were donated by Eldridge. In 1939, taxpayers in New Hyde Park became eligible to use the library. In 1941, the Lakeville Library Branch opened its doors at 257-12 Northern Blvd. In 1953, the Station Branch moved to 40B Great Neck Road. Head Librarian Lucy Kinloch started Library on Wheels in 1942 to bring books to readers as a result of gasoline shortages caused by the war effort. The year 1947 marked the death of Louise Skidmore Eldridge, the library’s benefactor for 67 years. In 1954, the first Parkville Branch opened at 2052 Lakeville Road. With three
branches and a return for mobility for residents, Library on Wheels was retired. In 1953, the Station and Lakeville Branches moved to their current locations. The Parkville Branch moved to larger quarters in the Parkville School Annex in 1959. Board meetings were opened to the public in 1965 and the library joined the Nassau Library System. In 1967, the library’s first Nominating Committee was formed. In 1968, the $1 membership was dropped, and membership became free and unlimited. In 1970, the library assumed a new location on Bayview Avenue after lack of space limited programs and adding more books. Professional concerts,

arts shows and film programs were held by volunteer committees. A Contemporary Black Artists in America exhibit has been running every year since 1972. The Library soon filled many cultural needs by have appearances from nationally acclaimed poets, authors and musicians. Shortly after the new building opened, a free library bus began providing stops from the Parkville Branch to Kings Point. Library Director Joseph Covino led the implementation of these changes; he was appointed in 1969. He conceived LEVELS in 1975. LEVELS met the creative needs of youths in seventh grade and up. JUNIOR LEVELS, a program for fifthand sixth-graders, was established in 1986. In 1974, a music room and a multipurpose room was created. In 1980, a photo gallery, dedicated to board member Morton A. Shapiro, who had died in office, was established. During the mid-1980s, a new sound system was installed in the community room, and the Comtec system for use by the hearing impaired, was made available during film programs. Video cassettes were added to the collection. The library in the past two decades take an active role in community affairs. A history of the Great Neck Park District In honor of the Great Neck Park District’s 100 year Anniversary, in 2016, here is a look at how it all began! The information was obtained by literature from the Great Neck Park District and the Great Neck Historical Society archives. The Great Neck Park District, the oldest park system in Nassau County and one of the only park districts in New York State, was formed by long-time resident, Roswell Eldridge. Just months before it was established, a New York State law went into effect allowing towns to create park districts as special districts within their borders. It was on Monday, August 14, 1916, that Roswell Eldridge of Great Neck appeared before the Board of the Town of North Hempstead in Manhasset, N.Y. and filed a petition for the establishment of the Great Neck Park District. Its founding mission was to obtain and preserve open space. The community association was to be outside any village or city and supported by taxes on district residents. Creation of the Great Neck Park District was widely supported; ninety percent of the people approached about the petition signed it. In addition, the petitioners collected $200,000 above the necessary one-half of the assessed value of the taxable real property in the proposed district. The petition for the establishment of the Great Neck Park District was then granted; it is comprised of the Village of Great Neck, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington, Thomaston, Kings Point and Russell Gardens. The district originally served 750 families, whereas today the Great Neck Park District serves more than 13,500 families living within its borders. The first commissioners were appointed for one, two and three years consecutively, thus setting the pattern for the future of three-year elected officials. While the petition was presented by Roswell Eldridge, his wife Louise Eldridge was also committed to creating the Great Neck Park District, and both of them were loyal supporters. Louise was an early commissioner of the Park District; she was also instrumental in opening the first library in Great Neck and the first woman mayor in the
state, serving in Saddle Rock. Louise and Roswell Eldridge led the first acquisition by the Park District. In 1916, the couple and their friends financed the purchase of Hayden’s Coal Yard at the western end of Steamboat Road (where the United Merchant Marine Academy stands today) and transformed the land into a public park and beach. This was the first park operated by the district. Allenwood Park was obtained in the early 1920’s as was Memorial Field. Soon after, William Gould Brokaw, owner of the Nirvana estate in the present Strathmore area and beyond, sold a piece of his property, between Beach Road and Arrandale Avenue, to the Great Neck Park District. Three and one half more acres were added to the Park District by the Great Neck School District, and the combined property became the Village Green in the Old Village. Renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand planned the beautiful Rose Garden on that land. When Roswell passed away in 1927 at age 70, Louise had a bandstand erected in his memory which still stands today. In 1938 the Village of Kings Point leased Kings Point Park, including 175
acres of land between Steamboat and Redbrook Roads, to the Park District. The Park District promised to improve the land and developed this former swamp area into a facility that can be enjoyed year round. This beautiful natural preserve was to become a garbage dump had it not been for the fight put up by the local government. Since then, the 175-acre recreational facility and forest area is used year-round, a favorite destination for walkers, ball and soccer players, picnickers, tennis players, and families enjoying the playground. By the 1940’s the Park District was busy obtaining land to create neighborhood parks. These included Cutter Mill Park, Firefighters’ Park (formerly Grace Avenue Park) and Wyngate, all of which enhanced the central part of the community that had spread southward from the Old Village to the Plaza area, where commuting to New York City changed from catching the steamboat to catching the train. The playground equipment purchased at the time cost less than a game you would buy in a box today. For instance, the original see-saw for Wyngate Park cost the Park District a meager $8.55! at the end Steamboat Road was bought by the United States Merchant Marine Academy. This sale was offset by the purchase of the present Steppingstone Park and Marina from Walter Chrysler Jr. Shortly after 2000, Steppingstone Park was expanded to include land that had been part of the George M. Cohan estate. After World War II, Great Neck prospered. Many new residents who worked and commuted to Manhattan, asked the town government for a parking facility near the railroad station. In lieu of starting a new agency, the town turned to the Park District to take on the task. The Board agreed and to this day operates 3 parking fields servicing commuters for a nominal fee. Parks were added to the District in the early 1960’s and ‘70’s including Upland (1963), Lakeville (1966), Ravine (1968), Manor (1970) and Thomaston (1978). In 1964 the Parkwood Sports Complex was constructed with a pool and rink. Since then, several renovations have been made including enclosure of the rink (1970) and the expansion of the pool which is now called the Parkwood Family Aquatic Center. Parkwood Indoor Tennis Center was built in 1991. After the September 11, 2001, the ice-skating rink was renamed the Andrew Stergiopolous Ice Rink, in honor of Andrew Stergiopoulos, a Great Neck resident who grew up playing hockey at the rink, and who perished in the horrific attack. Great Neck House is the Park District’s community center. It was acquired in 1973 and was the beginning of a new wave of expansion during the ‘70’s. The building is an English Tudor style structure which was built by Roswell Eldridge at the turnof-the-century, as the original location of the Great Neck Library. He made sure to stipulate that if and when the library no longer housed the building, it must be used by the community and not sold for private use. Today, the programs and facilities at Great Neck House have become a vital and integral part of the Great Neck community. The Peninsula Club property in Thomaston was acquired in the 1990’s and now contains a much-loved dog park. The Village Green was in the midst of a refurbishing with a new fountain being installed, when a microburst in June 2010 destroyed dozens of trees in the Village Green in less than five minutes. Incredibly, within just a few days the park was cleared of debris and declared safe, though the devastation was painful to see. However, soon after a program of replanting was well under way. The revitalization of the Village Green included the addition of the all-abilities PlayGarden, a new Veteran’s Memorial and beautification of the Rose Garden. The Park District continues to carry out the mission of Louise and Roswell Eldridge. Today the programs, events and facilities have become a vital and integral part of the Great Neck community.

Saving the Stepping Stones Lighthouse BY A L I C E KASTEN Over the past few years, you’ve been reading about Stepping Stones Lighthouse; that beacon that was constructed in 1876 to guard the Long Island Sound entrance to New York Harbor. The Coast Guard granted the Town of North Hempstead stewardship of the Lighthouse in 2006, and the Town was charged with maintaining and improving its condition. The condition is quite poor: there are holes in the foundation and the roof, the masonry is bulging, the exterior paint is cracked. The windows have been boarded over, and the interior walls are gone. And the fog bell is missing. In addition, the Lighthouse needs a dock so that people and materials can be safely brought over to fix the structure. The Town of North Hempstead employed Cashin Engineering Associates to undertake sounding studies of the waters and sea floor bottom around the lighthouse; those studies have been completed. The Engineering firm divers worked underneath the surface to determine the condition of the base of the structure, and the configuration of the sea floor to recommend a location for a fixed dock; the required dock alone is estimated to cost approximately $200,000. In addition, the Great Neck Historical Society hired a Lighthouse Architect to let us know exactly what needs to be done, and in what order. It has been estimated that complete renovation of Stepping Stones may reach over $4 million; those repairs have been waiting for not only finances, but also approval to construct a dock. The Town has received grants which will cover the cost of the dock, but not the cost of repairing the lighthouse itself. Recently, approval of the dock has been granted by various Federal and State organizations, and we expect that
construction of the dock will take place this Spring. Once the dock is in place, it will be possible to bring equipment to the Lighthouse, and, as monies become available, actual reconstruction can begin. One of the more complicated, and unanticipated necessities is that of heating the structure. According to the Lighthouse Architect, the building must be heated to 50 degrees Fahrenheit to avoid ice damage. The Town has partnered with the Great Neck Historical Society and the Great Neck Park District to help publicize the need for care for our Lighthouse, and to help raise the funds for that repair. The Park District has, in fact, made some temporary repairs to the roof, hoping to carry the Lighthouse through rough weather. The Historical Society has made a series of presentations to various community and school groups about the Lighthouse, and has raised about $40,000. Last fall we held our first annual 5K Race for the Lighthouse; we netted several thousand dollars for repairs. We plan to hold
the event again on October 14, 2018, so save the date, and come out and show the Lighthouse some love! If the lighthouse is not repaired, the Coast Guard will erect an ugly metal tower with a beacon at the top, and knock the building down. We will have then lost yet another part of our history, and our connection to life on the peninsula in the 1800s. When we preserve historic structures we preserve irreplaceable cultural resources. There have been many people who have expressed sadness about the impending destruction of the Playhouse, and the losses of fine buildings around the peninsula. The Town, the Historical Society and the Park District are hoping that we can save the Stepping Stone Lighthouse from this fate.

Community is working to restore the Saddle Rock Grist Mill BY A L I C E K A ST E N President, Great Neck Historical Society Drive around the Great Neck area, and you will find signs pointing to the Saddle Rock Grist Mill. The Mill, the property of Nassau County, used to be visited by school children, who learned its history and brought home sacks of grain produced between its stones. But as no one has been able to visit lately, many have forgotten the importance of the Mill. The mill was built around 1700 to grind the grain that was produced on the farms that filled the Great Neck peninsula. Originally it was used to grind corn, and that flour was then sold to the world markets. First owned by Robert Hubbs Jr, it was sold to Henry Allen in 1702, and passed through the Allen family, eventually being sold to Richard Udall in 1833. The
Udalls improved and updated the mill, using it to grind not only corn but many other grains as well. They also used the mill as a dock for ships purchasing the products of Great Neck’s prosperous farms. The mill continued to pass through the Udall family, and eventually became the property of Louise Udall Eldridge, the same Louise Eldridge who helped to found the Great Neck Library, Park District, and Village of Saddle Rock. Mrs. Eldridge restored the mill, and upon her death it became the property of the Nassau County Historical Society. It was deeded to Nassau County in 1955 to insure restoration. It is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The Mill has been restored numerous times, most recently in 1992, but increasing natural disasters, such as Hurricane Sandy, and decreasing funding have taken their toll. The Mill, once the site of school
field trips, has been closed for years, awaiting the funding that will make it safe for visits. Nassau County received a $45,000 grant for architectural evaluation that was used to generate an engineer’s report. That report shows that it will take hundreds of thousands of dollars to make the building structurally sound and spurred by Great Neck Historical Society member and County Legislator Ellen Birnbaum, the County is seeking State and Federal grants to meet that goal. Recently, the County received a small grant to cover the damage done by Hurricane Sandy, and an architect has toured the Mill. The damage, both inside and outside the Mill, is extensive. Many floorboards are missing, and others are rotten, which has given access to various types of animal life. The wheel, pictured last year in poor condition, has now fallen completely apart,

There is no part of the Mill that is not damaged According to an article appearing in the Oct 2017 issue of Early American Life magazine, the Saddle Rock Grist Mill is one of only 5 tidal mills still standing in the English-speaking world. The Tide Mill Institute is holding a conference on April 7 in Astoria, and the Great Neck Historical Society has been asked to make a presentation about the Saddle Rock Grist Mill. It is the hope of the Great Neck Historical Society that Nassau County will dedicate itself to the preservation of this historic mill, and that one day our children will be able to visit our important landmark.
