Outdoor dining on horizon Curran aims to aid downtowns

BY R OB E RT PELAEZ Nassau County Executive Laura Curran is taking steps to revitalize village downtowns battered by the forced shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On the first day of reopening last week, after 67 days of the New York On Pause quarantine, Curran announced new programs aimed at giving a lifeline to small businesses and restaurants: a plan to open main streets for outdoor dining and a program to deliver complete personal protective equipment kits to small businesses passed over by the federal program.

Sassouni challenged by Jahng District residents to vote for two school trustees and $241M budget

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z One contested race for a seat on the Board of Education and a $241 million budget are on the ballot for residents of the Great Neck school district in Tuesday’s election.

Trustees Rebecca Sassouni and Jeffrey Shi were elected to the board for the first time in 2017. Shi, a technology consultant, is running unopposed, while Sassouni is challenged

by John Jahng.

Shi defeated Nikolas Kron in the May 2017 election after candidates Grant Toch and Michael Golden dropped out. Sassouni won unopposed after her opponent, Ilya Aronovich, dropped out

of the race.

In her second time around and in the midst of an unconventional campaign due to the coronavirus pandemic, Sassouni, a mother of four and a lawyer, said she has lived in Great Neck for 26 years.

Sassouni touted her experience serving the community before being elected to the school board. She has served as parent co-chair for the Shared Decision Making Committee at

Great Neck North High School and John F. Kennedy School, a past officer for the United Parent Teacher Council and chair of its legislative committee, and is the current president of the Sephardic Heritage Alliance Inc. “I have been involved with the community in some very gratifying, meaningful and important ways,” Sassouni said. “I have a very procedural Continued on Page 5

Village of Great Neck trustees amended a local law to have the superintendent of the Building Department take on the responsibility of final determination on construction for residential swimming pools.

BY R OB E RT PELAEZ Swimming pools were once again at the center of the discussion in the Village of Great Neck.

Members of the Board of Trustees voted during a Zoom video conference on Tuesday to adopt an amendment to local code that grants the superintendent of buildings the final determination on such construction, provided it meets the village criteria. Effectively it no longer will require the board to approve an application for a swimming pool.

Village resident Yaffa Rabbe said she is concerned that homeowners with smaller properties will start applying to build pools in areas where properties are very close together.

“If my neighbor has a pool, I am going to hear everything that they do in the backyard. I smell the barbecue,” Rabbe said.

“I’m asking how much is it going to take away from my peace of

mind?”

Resident Amy Glass expressed initial concerns about chemicals and quality of water potentially being a factor if leaks occur. Glass cited close proximity to neighbors for many residents in the village as a reason for concern about chemical invasion and potential damage to neighboring water supplies.

“I feel that the size of the property makes a big impact on the size of these pools,” she said.

“If this encourages swimming pools on properties that are too small without asking neighbors, I don’t think it’s fair.”

Glass indicated that the process would also cut out certain checks and balances that provide opportunity for neighbors to review and intervene on such proposals which could require the removal of trees, changes to the backyard, splashing and unwanted noise from motors.

“It’s an enormous intrusion when properties are this small.

This is not Kings Point,” Glass said.

Mayor Pedram Bral reiterated that this would not change the requirements necessary to construct a pool. “I don’t want you to think tomorrow we’re going to have 25 pools. Not every house in Great Neck is going to have a swimming pool,” Bral said. “This is as of right and they’re asking for minor adjustment to what is allowable.”

Glass and Rabbe said another concern for neighbors is a pool’s attraction of other people.

Both said they were concerned with how their quality of life would be adversely impacted by parties and other gatherings.

Great Neck resident David Aubree said while he is not generally concerned with swimming pools, the timing of the situation seemed inappropriate.

North Shore Hebrew Academy valedictorians Kayla Kreinik and Ruben Prawer reflected on their personal growth over the past four years ahead of graduating this coming Tuesday.

Kreinik said she quickly began to join programs and clubs as a freshman. With the help of North Shore’s director of student life, Debra Gold, Kreinik said, the foundation was set for her to continue coordinating community service programs and join a plethora of clubs and activities throughout her four years of high school.

“In 9th grade I started talking with [Gold] and developed a great relationship with her,” Kreinik said. “Afterwards, I joined the art club, painting and drawing club, the school paper, the traveling math team, fashion club and mock trial.”

“Kayla is a bright, mature, responsible and reliable young lady,” Gold said. “I’ve been teaching for 40 years, and I have never met anyone in that caliber.

The confidence in herself grew so tremendously in four years.

She came in shy and reserved, but when she bloomed, her rose turned into a bouquet of roses.”

Prawer said his success in and out of the classroom was attributed to a program he attended called JOLT Israel, which he attended in the summer going into his junior year. The five-week trip to Israel provided Prawer and others who attended with leadership skills by packaging food for those in need and running a camp for siblings of disabled children, he said.

“That trip was probably that turning point in my high school experience,” Prawer said. “I knew it then and I know it now – that trip is the highlight of my entire high school experience and life so far.”

After the trip, Prawer said, he immediately recognized himself trying to make a positive impact in school with several friends who also attended the trip with him. Prawer said he and a few of his friends started to play music every Friday in the lobby of the school to get everyone in the spirit of Shabbat.

Americana storefronts boarded up

Follows incidents of rioting and looting in aftermath of George Floyd’s killing

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z Storefronts throughout the Americana shopping center in Manhasset have been boarded up following protests, looting and rioting around the nation in the wake of the death of a Minnesota man in police custody.

The doors and windows of stores in the Americana have been covered with wood, much like others in Nassau County.

Efforts to reach representatives from the Americana for comment were unavailing.

Protests featuring peaceful walks or displays of solidarity as well as looting and rioting have occurred throughout the nation after George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man, was arrested and died in police custody in Minnesota.

Floyd was arrested on May 25 by Minneapolis police officers after a deli employee contacted authorities, accusing him of buying cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill, according to news reports.

A viral video showed Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin holding his knee on Floyd’s neck. A criminal complaint from the Hennepin County attorney’s office said, “The defendant had his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in total. Two minutes and

The complaint said three factors contributed to Floyd’s death, “the combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”

A peaceful protest occurred in front of Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola on Monday evening. According to Newsday, more than 2,500 people came together to combat “institutionalized racism” throughout the country.

Beaches reopen after contamination Sewer main blockage caused runoff to flow through storm drain into Hempstead Harbor

BY R O S E W E L D ON Four North Shore beaches that had been closed due to contamination from sewage reopened last Thursday, according to the Nassau County Department of Health.

Tappen Beach in Glenwood Landing, Morgan Beach in Glen Cove, Sea CliďŹ&#x20AC; Village Beach in Sea CliďŹ&#x20AC; and North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington were closed by the county on Tuesday, May 26, after a sewer main blockage caused untreated sewage to flow into a storm drain and out into Hempstead Harbor.

The starting point of the blockage is unknown.

A representative from the county Department of Health said in a phone call that the four beaches were reopened after water quality tests were conducted. The department has not yet replied to a FOIL request for the water quality tests.

Shi agreed with Sassouni’s sentiments and thanked the community and the board for the past three years. “[The board] works with a great team of administration, teachers, parents and residents throughout the district,” Shi said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to be running unopposed and to continue serving the entire school district.”

Jahng, a Great Neck resident for the past 12 years and a financial investment adviser, cited his experience attending Brooklyn Technical High School followed by New York University and said he would not be the man he is today without either.

In the early 1990s, Brooklyn Technical High School was one of three specialized high schools in New York City, Jahng said. Jahng spoke on the unique programming Tech offered to him and his classmates and said he wants to incorporate more innovative and mainstream technology into the Great Neck school district if elected.

“I still remember my peers in mechanical engineering building a hovercraft to transport a person as a class project,” Jahng said. “At the time, that was a revolutionary technology. I am certainly in favor of providing our students with the same resources if I am elected.”

Sassouni said that many of the issues and concerns she has heard from the public centered around the coronavirus pandemic causing Nassau County to close schools for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year.

More specifically, she said, distance learning and planning alternatives for the coming school year have been of high importance in the school district.

“Nobody knows what schools will look like come September, and with the unknown comes frustration,” Sassouni said. “Though there have been a few glitches with the technological side of distance learning, people must keep in

As in years past, the district’s adopted budget, $241 million for the 2020-21 school year, has also been a prominent topic of discussion among taxpayers and constituent groups, Sassouni said.

“There is an extensive amount of planning that goes into developing and ultimately adopting a budget each year,” Sassouni said. “We always try to take everything into account including feedback from parents, stakeholders, educators and assistant superintendents from the affected schools.”

Sassouni and Jahng participated in a virtual candidate meet-and-greet with more than 50 people in attendance on Monday. The forum was hosted by the Northshore Asian Civic Association, a nonprofit organization whose mission includes promoting the civic and civil rights and interests of the Asian-American community in Great Neck.

The board unanimously adopted a $241 million budget for the 2020-21 school year on May 13, an increase of almost $7 million.

virtually via Zoom due to the coronavirus pandemic, is $241,395,571 compared with the current year’s budget of $234,418,944, a rise of 2.98 percent.

John Powell, assistant superintendent of business and finance, said the proposed budget remained within the state-mandated tax cap.

“The 2 percent tax cap that everyone assumes to mean the real property tax levy cannot increase higher than 2 percent is not absolute,” he said. “Though a 2 percent cap is possible, each public school district’s tax limit will be different as a result of that district’s individual calculation.”

According to the budget, other tax cap calculation components permit the district to raise taxes by 4.16 percent for 2020-21.

The budget calls for a 2.57 percent, or $5,339,183, increase in real property tax. Powell said the district had the fifthlowest tax rate per $100 of assessed value in Nassau County for the 2019-20 fiscal year.

Board of Education President Barbara Berkowitz said that though no decisions about a potential reduction of state aid have been made, the district’s

diligence with its appropriated reserves and fund balance will mitigate any potential adverse effects.

“I’ve referred to the [appropriated reserves and fund balance] as a rainyday fund sometimes,” Berkowitz said.

“It allows us comfort with any unanticipated events like a tree falling through the roof of a school, or major leaks within a school. Things that we cannot anticipate to happen.”

Residents will also be voting on the $9.74 million budget for the Great Neck Library.

The proposed budget calls for a decrease in spending of $65,500, or 0.61%, from the current operating budget of about $9.8 million. The property tax levy has been flat since fiscal year 2018, calling for just over $9.49 million in revenue, with the rest of the budget supported by payments in lieu of taxes and other resources.

Voting is taking place by absentee ballots, which were to be sent to everyone who resides in the district and is registered to vote, according to Berkowitz. She said ballots must be received by the district no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

N. Shore sees steady COVID decline 17 residents have tested positive over the past week, the lowest number since March

The number of North Shore residents who tested positive for the coronavirus over the past week, 17, is the lowest number since the third week in March, accord-

ing to statistics provided by the Nassau County Department of Health.

Last week, the confirmed number of coronavirus cases throughout North Shore communities was 4,191. That number increased over the week to 4,208.

The figures, broken down by community on the county’s interactive map, were the most up-to-date figures available as of Wednesday morning.

Port Washington accounts for 379 of the North Shore’s cases. Of that total,

215 are from town-governed areas and 96 in Manorhaven. The area did not see any new cases of the coronavirus over the past week, something that has not occurred throughout the North Shore since the state of emergency in Nassau County was declared.

The Village of Roslyn still had the most cases per 1,000 residents in Nassau County, according to figures provided by the county Department of Health.

According to figures provided by the U.S. Census Bureau, the estimated population of the Village of Roslyn was 2,882 in 2018. According to the county figures, Roslyn’s 147 cases amount to 50.8 cases per 1,000 residents.

New Cassel has the second-highest rate per 1,000 residents in the county but still had more than five times as many cases as Roslyn. Roslyn Heights had 124 cases as of Monday, but that translated to a rate of 18.7 cases per 1,000 residents.

Roslyn Harbor’s 16 cases resulted in a rate of 17.1 cases per 1,000 residents.

Municipalities that stretch into more than one North Shore area such as Flower Hill, Herricks, Albertson, Garden City Park, Searingtown and North Hills were counted separately and accounted for 629 cases, an increase of just two from last week.

Suozzi among those endorsed by NYUT

Tom Suozzi (D-Glen Cove) among the chosen.

Community unity feeds families in need Sisterhood leaders from Temple BethEl of Great Neck received such a positive response to their call for volunteers to bake homemade desserts for hospital workers last month that they decided to complement the efforts of the temple’s Brotherhood by offering sweet treats to the growing number of food insecure families in Great Neck who receive bags of staples and produce from the St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church Interfaith Food Pantry every other week.

In an effort to defeat food insecurity in the community, Temple Beth-El’s Brotherhood became the principal supporter of the 25-year-old food pantry three years ago. At that time, the pantry was providing only nonperishable food. More than a year ago, Brotherhood members Stuart Lubert and Steven Koteen enlisted a local food distribution company to deliver dozens of cases of fresh fruits and vegetables to the pantry.

Bertha del Carpio, who coordinates the food pantry program, regularly tells Brotherhood what produce is needed. Last year, Brotherhood provided more than 600 cases of fresh fruits and vegetables to approximately 60 local families. Every other Friday, the distributor had been delivering about 20 cases, which were shared with local families when the pantry opened the next day.

“Since the COVID crisis began, the routine deliveries have grown to include hundreds of pounds of rice and beans,” explained Brotherhood President Matthew Moshen. “Brotherhood Past President Allan Lowenkron is now volunteering at the pantry many days each week, storing delivered and donated food, packing food bags for the pantry’s clients and routinely searching local stores to add to the pantry shelves. Recently, Brotherhood member Steven Friedland has joined him.”

Much of the funding for Brotherhood’s efforts comes from the congregation’s donations and from local community groups like the Great Neck Soccer Club, according to Moshen.

“I am very proud to be supporting this mitzvah with the other volunteers and am grateful for the support that the temple provides,” said Lowenkron. “It is truly a blessing to be fortunate enough to help others.”

So Sisterhood leaders Judi Rosenzweig, Jenn Still-Schiff, Rochelle Rosenbloom and Sandy Lubert reached out to the temple family, explaining that the Great Neck families who receive food from the St. Aloysius pantry would truly appreciate homemade treats.

The organizers again received an overwhelmingly positive response from the community. Sisterhood was hoping to collect 100 family-size servings, but wound up with more than 300 dessert packages in the temple parking lot on Thursday, May 21, completely filling three SUVs, which were transported to nine brimming shopping carts and four long tables inside the pantry.

try was the recipient of your generosity,” Sisterhood leaders told the donors. “The number of families coming increases every week.”

Temple Beth-El Brotherhood members helped unload the baked goods and bring them inside. During distribution on Saturday, May 23, 117 families—or approximately 468 people—received food.

Senator Anna Kaplan, a temple member, helped distribute the packages.

“We have an awesome team,” said del Carpio. “Thank you all for your dedication and support, and for all the donations. Our neighbors have called me to thank all of you and to tell me the cookies were delicious—and it was quite an honor to have Senator Kaplan working with us.”

Lowenkron agreed. “Anna Kaplan, our state senator, and one of her staff members were on-site while we were distributing food. They both helped by making food bags, transporting the bags from the social hall to the main floor and handing

them out.”

The Brotherhood Past President was thankful for the outpouring of support.

“Also assisting was Gloria from St. Aloysius and Jason from CYO,” noted Lowenkron, after the event. “Thank you, Steve Friedland, for making the produce bags both yesterday and this morning.

Thank you to all the bakers—a tremendous amount of baked goods were given out to the families. Thank you also to the Great Neck Soccer Club for your donations and support, which have left the pantry stocked with items needed for those less fortunate. All the families that we support were very appreciative, saying ‘Good morning,’ smiling and saying ‘Thank you’ numerous times.”

The Great Neck Soccer Club was happy to help and plans to continue contributing to the food bank.

“We at the Great Neck Soccer Club look forward to working with all of you for many years to come in continued support of our community,” said Rishi Bhatia.

“Many kudos to all of you for your hard work and dedication. Please continue to let us know how to best help. We look forward to our next Costco run this week.”

One of the Brotherhood members who began the initiative to provide fresh produce to the pantry was in agreement.

“It was totally amazing. Thanks to all who participated in helping the less fortunate,” said Koteen. “All our faiths agree—this is our mission. May we continue doing God’s work.”

Tikkun olam, or repairing the world, has become a way of life for many temple congregants. Even the youngest community members helped out. In addition the Times Up Club at Great Neck North High School and the Girl Scouts contributing baked goods, congregant Jacob Podwall celebrated his 13th birthday on Saturday by holding a food drive at his house to fill the pantry.

“We did a drive-by food drive on Jacob’s birthday, for his bar mitzvah project,” said his mother, Barbara Podwall, who handed out chocolate cupcakes and Hershey’s Kisses to donors to celebrate her son’s birthday. “It was great! Lots of people came out in the pouring rain.”

Sisterhood was grateful to everyone who provided treats for these local families. “In these tough times, it’s great to know that our community supports those in need.”

The Great Neck Library mourns Deidre Goode It is with deep sadness that the Great Neck Library mourns the passing of Deidre Goode, Department Head of Children’s Services, in May 2020.

Deidre received her Master of Library and Information Science degree at Queens College. She joined the Great

Neck Library in 2007 as the Children’s Services Department Head and continued her role in the Children’s Department until the present.

We will remember Deidre’s vibrant spirit, wonderful sense of humor, and her signature laugh.

G.N. board election, budget vote information The Great Neck Board of Education has adopted the proposed 2020–21 school budget in the amount of $241,395,571. This amount is a 2.98 percent increase over last year’s budget. The proposed tax levy increase is 2.57 percent, which is below the tax cap limit of 4.16 percent.

“This is an unusual budget season during an unprecedented time,” explains Superintendent Dr. Teresa Prendergast. “This global pandemic has affected our school operations in every way.

As we look ahead to next school year, the Administration and the Board have worked very carefully to present a prudent budget that maintains support for our students and preserves our highquality academic and extracurricular programs.”

Vote Information Due to health and safety concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, an Executive Order from the New York State Governor requires the 2020–21 budget vote to be conducted via absentee ballot only. Every registered voter will automatically receive an absentee ballot with a postage-paid return envelope.

Absentee ballots must be received by the Office of the District Clerk, Phipps Admin. Building, 345

Lakeville Rd., no later than 5 p.m. on June 9, 2020.

Budget Overview After months of preparation, with input from stakeholders across the District, administrators completed the preliminary working budget. In early March, the Board of Education held its first informal budget hearing. Just two weeks later, the Governor closed schools across the State as the severity of the pandemic came to light.

In April, administrators revised the budget and eliminated more than $1.4 million in planned additions for the 2020–21 school year. Further, additional funds were allocated from the District’s fund balance and reserves to offset increased costs and reductions in state aid. These changes reduce the tax burden on residents.

“We must be sensitive to the tax impact that our school district budget has on our community members who are facing financial challenges during this difficult time,” explains Assistant Superintendent for Business John Powell.

The proposed budget maintains academic offerings, extracurricular programs, Board of Education elementary class size guidelines, and opportunities for all learners. It also provides added

support for the district’s growing number of special education and English as a new language (ENL) students.

“In light of the severity of what is going on all around us, it seems an inopportune time to focus on a school budget, however we have obligations to meet,” says Board President Barbara Berkowitz. “Our children need the continuity of instruction now more than ever with all the other changes in their young lives.

These students deserve the same high standards of educational opportunities as those who came before them, and those who will follow.As a Board of Education, that is our responsibility.”

Substantial Services for Nonpublic School Students The district, in accordance with State law, allocates more than $6.5 million to provide services to private and nonpublic school students, including bus transportation, textbooks, health services, special education services, school library materials, and computer software loan programs.

New York State’s Property Tax Cap The 2020–21 school year is the ninth in which school districts must abide by New York State’s

tax cap legislation. Multiple factors affect the actual limit, and our school district’s tax levy limit for 2020–21 is 4.16 percent.

This tax-levy limit incorporates changes to the tax base, the rate of inflation, payments in lieu of taxes, debt payments, capital project expenditures, transportation equipment purchases, and pension increases above a certain percentage.

The proposed tax levy increase of 2.57 percent is well below the state-mandated tax cap. Residents may refer to the Tax Calculator tool on the district website (www.greatneck.k12. ny.us/budget) to estimate their 2020–21 school tax liability.

Validation of Fiscal Practices Great Neck is among a select few school districts in New York State to earn an “Aaa” rating from Moody’s Investors Service. This rating means that the district’s financial obligations are judged by Moody’s to be of the highest quality and, therefore, subject to the lowest level of credit risk.

Fifth-Lowest Class I Property Tax Rates Great Neck’s 2019–20 school tax rate for single-family homes, or Class I properties, was the fifthlowest of all the school districts in

Nassau County.

Voter Registration In light of the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting closure of school buildings, and for the health and safety of our community, the Board of Registration will not meet for the purpose of registering qualified voters of the district. Qualified voters who have voted in any school election or general election between 2016 and 2019, or have registered with the school district since that time, will automatically receive an absentee ballot with a postage-paid return envelope.

Taking the helm as its new editor-inchief, Northwell Health’s associate chief of Nephrology, Dr. Kenar D. Jhaveri, has been appointed to lead the print and digital publication, ASN Kidney News.

For over five decades, the American Society of Nephrology has been aiding in the fight to prevent, treat, and cure kidney diseases by educating health professionals and scientists, advancing research and sharing new knowledge. Through its peer-reviewed journals and monthly newsmagazine, Kidney News, ASN’s aim is to pinpoint emerging trends that will impact the field of nephrology.

Jhaveri, who is also a researcher at Northwell’s research arm the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research and a professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, has a special interest in innovative nephrology education, E-Nephrology and developing new teaching tools to enhance medical education. Jhaveri has been the long-time editor of the popular Kidney News column Detective Nephron.

“Throughout my time as a nephrologist, I look for innovative ways to share the latest advancements in this ever-changing field to physicians and

patients,” said Jhaveri, a resident of Albertson. “I look forward to leading the editorial direction of Kidney News, using my experience to help guide our team of writers and contributors from across the globe.”

Through his clinical efforts and scientific endeavors, Dr. Jhaveri has published numerous high-impact research papers, most recently the largest study to date linking the rate of acute kidney injury in hospitalized COVID-19 patients. The data was published in Kidney International, the official journal of the International Society of Nephrology (ISN).

“Dr. Jhaveri brings a wealth of knowledge and editorial experience to Kidney News,” said Dr. Ziyad Al-Aly, the chair of the ASN Publications Committee in an announcement posted on the website.

“He presented a forward-looking transformational vision to further elevate Kidney News as a platform for all voices in our specialty.”

Jhaveri graduated from SUNY Upstate Medical University College of Medicine and conducted his residency at Yale University School of Medicine, completing his fellowship at New York Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center.

Trump idea right for wrong reasons

P

resident Trump had a point last week when he issued an executive order that threatened to strip social media companies’ protection from lawsuits based on false and defamatory posts.

But as is often the case, the president’s threat appeared to be intended to intimidate social media companies such as Twitter from holding him accountable rather than correct an unfair legal protection.

And his charge that Twitter had violated the First Amendment and was guilty of “censorship” by appending “get the facts” warnings to some of his false posts on voter fraud had no basis in fact or reality.

The president does not have the power to revise the main law passed

by Congress in 1996 laying out the rules of the road for social media — Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act. Twitter was not censoring the president. The post stayed up. It was merely exercising its First Amendment rights to comment on the president’s post.

And if Twitter’s protection against being sued based on false and defamatory posts was eliminated, it would have to be more aggressive about policing messages that cross boundaries — like the president’s. We don’t think Trump really wants to lose access to his 80 million followers.

Twitter later escalated its battle with Trump when it attached an addendum to one of his tweets in response to protests and rioting in Minneapolis following the death of George Floyd after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.

Trump tweeted that “when the looting starts, shooting starts.” Twitter said the tweet had the potential to incite violence. We agree.

But it has taken no action

against Trump’s repeated tweets that essentially falsely accused MSNBC host Joe Scarborough, a frequent critic of the president, of murdering a staff member in 2001 when he was a Republican congressman in 2001.

Scarborough was 800 miles away at the time and police found no signs of foul play.

The aide’s widower asked Twitter to delete the message, but it refused.

Facebook’s response in all three cases was to do nothing.

Mark Zuckerberg, chief executive of Facebook, said the company’s policy is not to fact-check politicians like Trump — even if they violate rules that would apply to other people.

Zuckerberg said he has long believed that his company should avoid getting into the political fray and let its 3 billion users have their say.

But just weeks before, Facebook had no problem taking down an online ad produced by the Lincoln Project, a group of disaffected Republicans, entitled “Mourning in America.”

The ad blamed Trump for the death toll in the COVID-19 pandemic and the cratering of the U.S. economy and said Trump had assisted Wall Street but not Main Street.

The United States under Trump, the ad continued, was “weaker, sicker and poorer” and after another four years of him as president, we might not even have a country.

The only difference in the Lincoln Project’s posting and many of Trump’s is that the Lincoln Project’s ad was true.

Which is to say Congress should take a hard look at Section 230.

The Section 230legislation was intended to allow online start-ups to avoidlegal challenges to their content by terming them platforms and distributors rather than publishers.

social media to become an almost no-holds-barred platform that often rewards the loudest, most extreme posts.

This was accomplished by letting the online sites set rules for what is and is not allowed to be posted by visitors, unlike a newspaper that is responsible for whatever it publishes and is subject to libel laws.

From a practical point of view, this means that if someone sends a letter to the editor of this paper that is believed to be libelous, the newspaper and the letter writer can be sued if it is published.

But if the letter writer posts the same information on Facebook and Twitter, only the letter writer can be sued. Facebook and Twitter face no legal threat.

You can argue that this arrangement might have made sense when Facebook and Twitter were getting started. But online companies are now among the largest in the world and their owners some of the richest and most influential people on earth.

Google and Facebook alone account for more than 70 percent of digital revenues.

“They’re not neutral platforms, they are publishers, the most powerful publishers in the world,” said Tucker Carlson of Fox News. “It empowers a handful of tech monopolies to the detriment of everyone else.”

Such as newspapers.

Over the past 15 years, more than one in five papers in the United States has been shuttered and the

number of journalists working for newspapers has been cut in half.

More than 2,100 cities and towns have lost a paper and others are left with hollowed-out “ghost papers” with no one to cover school boards or offer local businesses ways to reach their consumers. This trend is only accelerating due to the economic damage caused by the pandemic.

Numerous studies show that communities without newspapers pay for the loss of coverage with higher taxes and increased government corruption.

Ironically, the loss of newspapers also results in the loss of content on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

The treasurer of Australia recently pointed out that Google and Facebook are taking in a large share of online advertising revenue, even though much of their content came from media organizations.

In other words, newspapers pay reporters and editors to produce news stories and social media companies use their work to get most of the online advertising revenue. Talk about a bad deal for newspapers.

That needs to change beginning with newspapers and online media companies playing by the same rules.

If social media companies don’t face liability for posts, newspapers should not face liability for letters to the editor. Or if newspapers do face liability for letters to the editor, then so should social media companies

like Twitter and Facebook for posts.

Fair is fair.

Social media’s free lunch should also be ended. Social media companies should be required to pay fees for their use of newspaper articles.

“It’s only fair that those that generate content get paid for it,” said Josh Frydenberg, the treasurer of Australia, which is requiring social media companies to negotiate with news media on how to pay for their content.

European regulators are also seeking ways to extract money from social media companies.

People have argued that reclassifying social media companies as publishers subject to legal liability would undermine their entire business model. To which we say so what?

It certainly would curtail the disinformation and rage-for-profits model employed by these companies.

Which would hardly be a bad thing.

We understand very well the value of a robust exchange in the marketplace of ideas. These papers have encouraged that kind of discussion since their inception. We have generally not challenged assertions of fact in letters to the editor, leaving that to others in the community.

But we also understand that there are limits to free speech and on a couple of occasions have had to revise our policies based on community input.

That’s called accountability — something the online media giants should learn something about.

New York’s sad transit history continues

S

ince New York’s first rail line opened to passengers in July 1868, the transit system has been plagued by political incompetence, fiscal woes, unreliable service, filthy stations, unsanitary public restrooms, crime, neglected infrastructure, countless broken promises, and outright lying by elected leaders and so-called experts.

To understand that checkered history, I recommend Philip Mark Plotch’s excellent new book, “Last Subway: The Long Wait for the Next Train in New York City.”

Plotch, director of the Master of Public Administration program at St. Peter’s University, is most qualified to write about mass transit. He has served as director of the World Trade Center Redevelopment at the Lower Manhattan Development Corp. and as manager of planning and policy at the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

After a brief history of New York’s transit mishaps, Plotch focuses on the 100-year saga to construct the Second Avenue subway line on Manhattan’s East Side.

While talk for the new line began in 1903, the plans began

in earnest in 1929 when the city approved the project at a cost of $98.8 million.

But, as Plotch points out, the Second Avenue line “has symbolized New York’s inability to modernize its infrastructure and accommodate residents….”

Politicians who made great promises to get past the next election failed to deliver. They blamed construction delays on the Great Depression, the Second World War, and by the late 1960s, on NYC’s fiscal crisis.

In 1968, Gov. Nelson Rockefeller created the MTA, an umbrella agency that controls the budgets and policies for city and suburban mass transportation.

The building of the Second Avenue line was now in the hands of the MTA. At a groundbreaking ceremony, presided over by Rockefeller and Mayor John Lindsay in October 1972, MTA Chairman William Ronan announced that the line was “no longer a planner’s dream or an unfulfilled political promise. It is now being built and should carry its first passengers in 1980.”

However, Plotch notes, “Ronan

The federal government’s contribution of $25 million and the state’s $99 million grant were enough to pay only a small fraction of the costs. MTA officials added to the deception by saying that “the city had committed itself to pay all construction costs not covered by state and federal funds.”

The “most modern, futuristic subway in the world,” as the MTA described the project, would, once again, be delayed for decades.

Then in 2004, it was announced that an “8.5-mile Second

Avenue subway with 16 stations would be completed by 2020.”

Meanwhile, the experts had no idea how much it would actually cost and how long it would take to construct. Nor did they anticipate the adverse negative impact on neighborhood businesses during construction and the inconveniences residents would have to endure.

And costs soared. In the late 1990s, it was estimated that the first phase of construction between 63rd Street and 125th Street would be $3.6 billion. In 2004, it rose to $3.8 billion and In 2015, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made it clear to the MTA that he expected to open the first three stations on Jan. 1, 2017.

Cuomo proceeded to scare people about their jobs and companies. One contractor said, “He went right for the jugular. It was my way or the highway. He’s a bully; he does it well, an eloquent bully.”

Cuomo was commonly referred to as a “thug” and his top sycophant, MTA board member Larry Schwartz, became known as “the thug’s thug.” When reminded by a fellow board member they had a fiduciary duty to act independently, Schwartz replied, “You work for

the governor, f*** the fiduciary.”

To be able to have a 2017 New York’s Day grand opening, Cuomo “put his own short-term priorities ahead of the subway’s long-term needs,” Plotch says. The MTA diverted resources to fix the entire system “to accommodate Cuomo’s priorities.”

Hence, Plotch writes, “Spending $4.6 billion to build a 1.5-mile subway line was not necessarily a cause for celebration…. Per mile, the subway cost more than four times as much as new subway lines in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Copenhagen, Paris, and Tokyo.

Thanks to the rush, numerous problems popped up after the opening. “Quality,” federal officials reported, “was clearly compromised to accelerate the schedules.”

Gov. Cuomo, Plotch concludes, has joined the long line of politicians who “fostered false expectations about New York’s ability to adequately maintain and significantly expand the transit system.”

Yes, Cuomo’s reshuffling of resources to have a ribbon-cutting event will be impacting beleaguered passengers for years to come.

Me and my cheesy evolution during pandemic

I

t was a small restaurant in Paris, somewhere in the district of Montmartre, where I finally realized how crazy some people could get about cheese.

And that was just one of three odd things I realized while dining in this restaurant.

The first thing was that a restaurant could be located on the second floor of an otherwise nondescript building.

“How does anyone ever discover this place?” I asked the friend I was traveling with as we climbed up the stairs.

“The same way we did,” she answered. “They look it up in the Michelin Guide.”

Once seated, I studied the menu. This was probably not the moment to mention that I was no big fan of cheese. Which meant that I was in trouble because this restaurant was all about cheese and everything on the menu contained it, one way or another.

Finally, I ordered a quiche and sat back to take in my surroundings.

It had been a few years since my college French classes, but I

still retained enough of it to try listening in on the conversation at the table behind me.

It seemed pretty one-sided.

It was clearly a couple on a date — but the girl could hardly get a word in edgewise. What was going on?

I turned around.

The young man was reading to his date from the newspaper, and she was writing things down. Then she handed her paper across to him and he started marking it up.

In fact, what I had stumbled across, in its native habitat, was the much dreaded “dictée,” or dictation quiz, that I remembered with loathing from French class. Except these folks did it for fun! It was actually printed in the newspaper, just like we have crossword puzzles. So that was Strange Thing Number Two. But the strangest thing that night came as the grand finale at the end of our meal. Instead of dessert, the waiter brought a large basket of different types of cheeses: round ones; square ones; flat ones; even one shaped like a tall skinny volcano, covered

The odors ran the gamut from “bearable” to “gym-sock.

Why would anybody eat those, I wondered? Who would consider this place a treat? And why, oh why, had I ever agreed to come here in the first place?

The truth is I have never been fond of anything in the dairy family — except ice cream, of course.

My mother only got me to drink one glass of milk a day with the help of chocolate syrup. My school cafeteria never offered chocolate milk, so I had to tote

my lunch box and thermos to school and back, every single day.

One terrible day I opened the thermos to find: white milk. Oh no! I had accidentally switched lunch boxes with my brother.

Worse yet — by the time I got to his classroom to switch back, he had already drunk my milk.

“Didn’t you think it was odd that Mom gave you chocolate milk?” I asked him.

“I just thought she wanted to treat me,” he responded. He got two thermoses of milk that day.

When I went away to camp, I knew what I had to do. I told them I was allergic to milk — which worked until one chilly morning someone caught me drinking hot cocoa. Busted!

Back at school, I trained myself to tolerate at least enough cheese to eat my slice of pizza at slumber parties, which in turn prepared me for college.

Then I moved to Manhattan.

There were staff parties, brunches and gallery openings — all of which seemed to require knowledge of wines and cheeses.

It got so that I would walk into Dean & Delucca — the gour-

met emporium of the day — and inhale the intoxicating mixture of roasting coffee, baking bread and ancient cheeses. “Ah, can you smell that? I feel so sophisticated,” I told my husband.

“Wow!” he said, straightening up from whatever he was investigating. “You mean you can actually tell the dark from this semi-dark chocolate?”

“No, silly — it’s all the exotic cheeses.”

“But you don’t like cheese.”

“That’s true — but it makes me sophisticated.”

“Well, who cares about that, if you don’t even like it?”

He was right. I quit fooling myself and went back to regarding all the cheeses and salamis hanging over deli counters as quaint ethnic decorations.

Until now. Nowadays, when you might have to wait a week or more for the groceries you’ve ordered to be delivered, it is good to have something that can feed you and keep without spoiling, for all of that time.

It turns out those quaint oldtimers were on to something.

Riots reflect American culture at loose ends

Q

uestion: What happens when you shut down a culture for three months?

Answer: Rioting in the streets.

True, the trigger to our current epidemic of riots was the death of George Floyd, the unarmed black man who was held to the ground with a policeman’s knee to his neck. But this explosion of rage has to do with the pent-up frustration Americans of every race, color and creed feel because every form of cultural satisfaction has been suddenly removed for the past three months.

If you think you can eliminate every opportunity for selfexpression known to man and not expect a consequence you’re kidding yourself. The value of things such as sports, art or shopping are finally being revealed by the rage currently expressed in the streets of nearly every major city in the United States. Here is why.

Society is based upon the control of our two most basic instincts: sex and aggression. At base, humans are animals driven by our

need to procreate and our need to destroy things. As Freud explained more than 100 years ago, society is produced and survives based upon its ability to teach us to control these two drives. Most of us learn how to control these drives early on and eventually we “sublimate” our sexual and aggressive drives through sports, art or shopping.

Over the last three months all of these essential forms of sublimation have been promptly removed and thus our baser instincts have been bubbling up. All they needed was a match to produce an explosion. The match was provided by Police Officer Derek Chauvin when he ended the life of George Floyd.

This is why sports and art and travel and shopping matter. Without these man-made forms of expression we get closer to our animal nature, which translates into rioting in the streets or fornication in the park. Neither is a good idea.

Let us take the benign game of golf as a good example of how our sexual drive is sublimated and

A married man gets up very early on a Saturday morning, puts on the most attractive golf garb he owns and merrily drives off for a round of golf with his buddies.

He attempts to approximate the most elegant looking golf swing he is able to muster and thusly off he goes down the well-manicured first fairway with a smile.

Now on the face of it, this has nothing to do with his sex drive right? Wrong. He appears to be unconsciously making a clever effort to flirt, woo and to finally

dominate the woman in front of him, symbolized by the curvaceous lines, wonderful mounding, firm greens and attractive holes of the golf course.

Now let us say on this particular day he minds all his P’s and Q’s, stays focused and aggressive and voila he wins the trophy! Invariably at the trophy presentation he will hold up the trophy and give it a kiss. No one has to tell him to do this. He will do so automatically, even instinctively. For this trophy represents his baby, the child he created by conquering his new bride, the golf course he has just conquered. And no one gets hurt by this kind of activity. In fact his faithful wife who is still home, may be happy he is enjoying himself in an acceptable way.

I am sure you feel all this is silliness, but I assure you it is not.

At our base we are driven by our need for sex and the propensity to kill. And when our socialized means of expressing or sublimating these two drives are taken from us, we predict what we see today.

When our aggressive drives are not given a channel of expression through physical sports and exertion, we will often see acting out in the form of rioting or other forms of fighting. And when our sexual drives are not allowed sublimated expression, we predict that our libido will seek expression elsewhere. That may come in the form of more sexual activity at home or the more clandestine kind, otherwise known as adultery.

One way or the other, let us all hope and pray that our culture is given back to us soon and we can tee it up, sweat it out in yoga class or go buy a new handbag or sweater. And until that time we can expect to see more images like the CNN building being destroyed in Atlanta or other insane visions.

Without a culture to contain and direct us, mankind has little choice but to revert to his or her more animal nature. Cultural activities have been developed over the last 6,000 years for good reasons and we now see what happens when these activities are taken from us.

Discover joy of growing your own food

I

n a short over-the-hedge conversation with my neighbor, she was complaining that our local garden center didn’t have any tomato seedlings left except for three sad looking plants. Imagine that! Here we were talking about tomato plants and vegetable gardens, what varieties we liked best, which ones made the best sauce and which ones produced the most.

It turns out this kind of conversation is taking place across fences and hedges all over the country as more and more people are staying close to home and making vegetable gardens in their backyards.

Some people, of course, are seasoned growers, but many are new to this enjoyable task. Besides the fun of watching seeds germinate, grow, flower and produce vegetables and fruits, you have the added benefit of harvesting your own vegetables as you need them and enjoying the fresh taste of a perfectly ripe tomato that can only be had with a backyard garden.

So, here’s some advice to new gardeners about growing your own food successfully — and wouldn’t it be great for this activity to last even after COVID-19 retreats?

As with all efforts to grow

things, whether it be trees, flowers or vegetables, the soil is where you start. Healthy soil contains millions of beneficial micro-organisms that help grow plants. If you haven’t been spraying pesticides on your property, you are already way ahead. And if this is the case, growing in raised beds (enclosed in untreated wood frames) or directly in the ground, only requires mixing your own soil with some nutrient rich compost and top soil.

If you have a chemically treated property, maybe this is the year to switch to organic methods. Ask your landscaper to aerate your lawn to provide oxygen and overseed often. They can also apply compost as a top dressing or spray a liquid called compost tea which contains microbes designed to energize the soil and help everything grow thick and lush. A new garden in a yard that has been treated with pesticides requires just a little more work. You’ll have to buy more bags of topsoil and compost and should plant your vegetables in raised beds.

Next is making your own compost. We have had a compost bin in our yard for decades and it provides our vegetable garden, flower beds, shrubs and lawn with essential nutrients and important micro-

organisms. Composting is a little like following a recipe. You put carbon-rich brown materials (leaves, dried weeds and dried grass clippings) and nitrogen-rich green materials (vegetable and fruit scraps, coffee grounds and egg shells from the kitchen and recently pulled weeds) into an enclosed space and let nature take over.

Lots of people talk about the ideal ratio of brown to green material, but it is debatable. However, make sure you are not just putting “wet” green materials into the heap as it will take much longer to compost and may smell. I avoid this by gathering up leaves in the fall and putting some of them in a reserve pile near or behind the

compost to use during the summer for my “brown” material. I always cover newly deposited green materials with a little brown, even if the brown is a little soil or compost from the bottom of the bin. Think about all those leaves that were placed in black plastic bags and trucked off to the landfill. How we deprive the earth of its natural cycles that were so brilliantly designed by nature!

I think the best compost bins are three sided, with the front open for loading and unloading, made from cement blocks turned on their side, wire fencing, pallets or any other material that contains the contents and lets air in. Turning the materials over once in a while is useful, as is adding a handful of soil or compost accelerator. This website is useful — homecompostingmadeeasy.com.

Now, what to plant? I always go with my favorite vegetables and those I need for my recipes. Field crops like potatoes, pumpkins and the like require lots of space, so I avoid them. I do, however, try to get the most out of my limited space by succession planting, growing vegetables in the same space according to the seasons. I plant early spring crops like radishes, arugula, peas and lots of greens

and then after harvesting them in May and June, replant the same space with summer crops, such as tomatoes, beans, onions, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers and squash.

In the fall I plant my cool crops again to harvest until the first frost.

A word about tomatoes: there are two types of tomato plants, determinate tomatoes and indeterminate tomatoes. Determinate tomatoes are varieties that grow to a certain height and then stop growing when the fruit sets. Indeterminate tomatoes will just keep growing and producing fruit until the first frost. So, of course, you have to leave much more space for the indeterminate varieties. So much to learn about tomatoes!

Whatever greens are still doing well in November, I transplant into a cold frame for fresh greens all winter long. We keep the cold frame just warm enough by the heat of a single incandescent light bulb on the coldest days and nights.

Finding an experienced gardener in your neighborhood for some tips is always helpful and you may get some plants as well.

Seed and plant catalogs are the downfall of the addicted vegetable gardener and their eyes are usually bigger than their garden plots.

Sassouni’s experience invaluable to G.N. board

A

community is largely defined – and a society shaped – by its schools.

If you want to know who we are, look at our schools. Of all the institutions, it is the one that binds us together as the Greater Great Neck.

We are fortunate to have a school board of such competence, high caliber and dedication as our schools – our community – are in the throes of two unprecedented crises: public health and economics. We’ve had safety challenges after Columbine and Parkland, and we’ve had severe economic hardship such as after the 2008 recession, but never one crisis feeding on another, exacerbating the harm as today.

The school board, in conjunction with administrators and stakeholders, is presently devising strategies against different scenarios that may come from the state – to remain closed and continue virtual classroom, to reopen with new health and safety guidelines, or some combination (such as half the class in person when half the class is on computer).

We’ve been blessed for generations of students to have had competent, strong leadership dedicated to the mission and guiding philosophy: to provide such a strong educational program so that each child, regardless of ability, can fulfill their full potential and become lifelong learners to adapt to whatever the future holds and even produce those

world-changing innovations.

This is no time to abandon that strong leadership.

Two trustees are up for reelection, but only one, Rebecca Sassouni, is being challenged. Her challenger, John Jahng, is an investment manager who has lived in Great Neck for 12 years, and in that time has attended one board meeting, he told me in a phone interview. His first-hand knowledge of Great Neck public schools comes from having a son who attended Great Neck elementary school, but now attends a private middle school.

Asked about the ever-present challenges to the school budget, his big idea is to expand extracurricular offerings by getting parents to volunteer their skills, like technology or investments.

Except that the schools already offer a rich program of opportunities to cultivate all of those abilities – Robotics, Science Research, DECA investment club, Mock Trial, Model UN, Model Congress, music, theater — that do not just enhance learning but in many ways are even more valuable than the mandated curriculum (check out the list on the district website; it is mind-blowing).

pre-Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Zoom — and our Great Neck alum have thrived, even contributed to those innovations, and I have no doubt the preparation that our students are getting, because of the decisions the school board has made, will continue.

Through Solomon-like, judicious decision-making, they have managed in a way few school districts have, to thread the needle between tax caps, budget pressures, state mandates and continue to provide the resources, the small-class sizes, the extra-curriculars that have proved so successful, and deliver a public school education to which every child is entitled, as good as the most selective, elite, even private schools – and do it at a per-pupil cost not much different from New York City (which gets half its funding from state aid vs. less than 4 percent for Great Neck). Great Neck doesn’t need to take lessons from

Brooklyn Tech; rather, as Gov. Cuomo again talks about education equity, it is Great Neck that should provide the template and the standard and not the other way around.

Sassouni, who lived in Great Neck for 26 years and put four children through Great Neck’s public schools (the youngest about to “virtually” graduate high school), has been engaged in the public schools since well before she was elected to her first term, and now has become a key member of the team which labors to balance the often competing interests of the stakeholders in a public school system – students, faculty, administrators, staff, parents, taxpayers, local and state government, where every decision evokes passion pro and con.

“We need to protect the standing of the public schools so they remain the jewel they are and Great Neck remains the destination people come to, to raise their family, establish roots,” Sassouni, said in a phone interview.

I don’t know how Jahng could possibly understand the complexity of the role or the underlying issues – he has not even participated in the budget process.

“I have full trust in the current board that they were very thoughtful when came out with this budget and considered interests of all the stakeholders in the community,” Jahng said.

Asked for any specific proposals he would make, Jahng said,

“We have a very good system in place. At the same time, what I am proposing is that we put more thought and resources into our curriculum, so that we are better prepared for change that will come. In 10-20 years, a lot of what we do will be automated.

And that will create opportunity but also a threat.”

The Great Neck Board unanimously adopted a $241 million budget for 2020-21, an increase of $7 million (enrollment continues to increase). But, mindful of the extraordinary pressures on taxpayers, this amount cut out $1.4 million in planned additions.

The property tax portion of the district’s revenue (about 95 percent of the budget) will increase 2.57 percent, well under what would have been allowed under the tax cap formula of 4.16 percent.

“Our children need the continuity of instruction now more than ever with all the other changes in their young lives,” said Board President Barbara Berkowitz. “These students deserve the same high standards of educational opportunities as those who came before them, and those who will follow. As a Board of Education, that is our responsibility.”

Re-elect Rebecca Sassouni and Jeffrey Shi and vote to adopt the school and library budgets.

Religion says to keep safe in time of COVID-19

D

ear Port Washington Community: As the curve on this terrible pandemic begins to flatten, society is beginning to open up again. Which we all welcome; the opportunity to begin to get our lives back to normal. However, please realize the level of continued risk involved with this terribly contagious virus is still unknown to a great degree.

I ask that you proceed with caution. I speak especially to those over the age of 65, or those with immunodeficiency. I urge you to continue to be completely vigilant about protecting yourself, by simply staying home, or by getting specific guidance from your doctor.

Yes, the hope is that the

worst is behind us; but most honest experts say we don’t really know yet. If you are in the high-risk category, you cannot take the risk. Give it some more time; what’s the rush (What did the man say to his Israeli taxi driver? Better to be late in this world than early in the next.)

Why am I discussing a subject that isn’t my job nor my area of expertise?

It’s because in conversations with congregants I am hearing a completely cavalier attitude towards the dangers of the current situation. Especially now that things are opening up, people are throwing all caution to the wind and are going about their daily routines and shopping errands as if all is normal. And this scares me greatly.

The problem is that most people in our area don’t know anyone who died or even got very sick, from corona. To most people, this whole thing is data on a screen; it’s not real life, so it doesn’t really hit home.

To me, this certainly does hit home. I personally know more than 50 people who lost their lives because of corona, mostly from the Crown Heights community in Brooklyn where I grew up; a short 45-minute car ride away.

Many dear friends and contemporaries of my parents who were healthy, active people, driving, traveling, going to work, were suddenly gone. Often they went from perfect health to their funeral literally overnight.

I also officiated over five fu-

nerals for my own members who lost loved ones to the virus. To me, this isn’t data or theory; it is fact. Painful, tragic fact. And the current lax atmosphere scares me, especially amongst people whose risk of mortality is significant should they get the virus, G-d forbid.

I hope I am wrong. I hope this pandemic is over. I’ll be thefirst to say AMEN and make a huge party to celebrate. However, as the Bible teaches, when it comes to life and death we are forbidden to take risks. We need to verify. And at this moment, the only way to truly verify is to wait.

Wrong time for G.N. schools to hike spending

T

he Board of Education for the Great Neck Public Schools is proposing a budget of $241.4 million for the tax year 2020-2021.

The previous year’s budget was $234.4 million and if the $7 million dollar increase gets approved by the voters, it would set the record for the steepest jump ever in the district’s 206-year history, bizarrely, occurring during a shutdown.

Due to the concerns about the spread of coronavirus, the residents will be receiving absentee ballots in the mail and will

decide how to vote on the proposed budget and mail back the ballots to the district.

The timing for the historically steepest budget hike is quite challenging to the residents.

Many are economically plagued from the different causes.Some have substantial loss of income from the COVID-19 pandemic. Many are subjected to tax increase as a result of the Nassau County Property Reassessment.Most are affected by the new federal limitation for tax deductibility ($10,000 on the income tax.)

The proposed budget has stipulated an $8 million aid for New York State while the State has an unprecedented $13 billion budget deficit due to the pandemic.This escalates the issues even further.Predictively the state will cut out a good chunk of the $8 million aid due to its shortage.

As a result, the district is going to use the reserves which corresponds to even higher future tax burdens on the residents.

Other public institutions, however, were more sensitive to the COVID-19 economic climate

by decreasing their budgets.For instance the Great Neck Library proposed a reduction of 0.61% from the previous year ($9.8M to $9.72M).

The steep budget hike is greatly attributed to the outside transportation contracts and their unions by the budgeteers.

If the residents vote against the current proposed budget, the board of education would have to propose another budget for vote, hopefully, lower than the previous year’s budget for a better chance of approval by the residents.

Yet, if the budget doesn’t get approved for the second and third times, the previous year’s budget would be utilized which is also referred to the austerity budget.

Thebudgeteers would reallocate the expenses and some would receive less than expected.It doesn’t seem to be so detrimental to any, especially in this economic climate, other than the egos of the union negotiators.

Biden offers the leadership needed now

s Trump talks about reopening the economy he exhibits the same reckless, impulsive behavior we have witnessed for past three years, fighting with governors, claiming “total authority”, and now hiding the facts of Covid-19 since January!

Facts matter. Honesty, too.

Yet with two serious crises raging – Now 100,000 dead from COVID-19, millions out of work – the president boasts falsely about untried medicines, and

promises an economic recovery that will be not come to pass.

Look at your family, your friends, your neighbors. No one is doing fine!

Joe Biden offers a different approach. Interviewed on Meet the Press, Biden called the American public “strong and tough ” and said, “We should tell them the truth, the unvarnished truth…” “I would be telling governors to listen to Dr. Fauci,” Biden responded. “Listen to the scientists. Listen to what

the facts are.”

Joe Biden’s plan focuses on the economy, but recognizes that ongoing threats to our health WILL remain. The plan will continue mitigation measures, and call for easily accessible, prompt testing.

As the economy re-opens, Biden will have skilled professionals in the private and health sectors brought together, to develop innovative methods to operate safely in an ongoing manner. As Biden states in his plan,

“We should stop thinking of the health and economic responses as separate. They are not.”

Joe Biden has shown that kind of leadership, first in the Senate as chairman of the judiciary and foreign relations committees, and later as Barack Obama’s vice president when they focused on the Ebola Crisis and America’s economic recovery.

Biden brings something even more than his experience in Washington, He understands

the struggles people face when they lose a job or when a loved one is sick. He offers kindness, compassion, empathy, and strength, as his story is one of loss that offers a window into the needs of others.

Biden’s plan represents our vision for the future. Its development and costs are based on facts. It offers Americans, finally, a chance to move forward.

Mandery offer Manhasset ed board expertise

’m a high school English teacher with 32 years of fulltime teaching experience. I’m also a homeowner in Manhasset and a parent of a sixth-grader at Munsey Park.

I’m writing to tell Manhasset residents that Evan Mandery would make a great member of the Manhasset Board of Education.

I’ve known Evan for seven years, as a neighbor and a friend.

We coached our daughters’ softball teams side by side on the fields at Manhasset High School.

Evan is exceptionally smart, kind, ethical, and caring.

He is an alumnus of Harvard College and Harvard Law School.

He’s written six books. He’s also a professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice.

Educators rarely serve as school board members. Most school board members bring their

success from private industry to the school board. Although wellintentioned, they sometimes lack educational understanding.

Why do executive chefs run restaurants? Because they know the art of cooking from the ground up. Evan knows the art of teaching from teaching his students. He also cares about teaching from the perspective of a parent. His daughter is in the fifth grade at Munsey Park School

and his two other children are products of the Manhasset school system.

This is especially important because Evan is invested in what happens in the schools for the right reasons – the students.

As a fellow educator, I agree with Evan’s vision. He wants to build an online learning plan that includes more teaching. The current number of hours per week of virtual learning is just not

enough.

I’m excited about Evan’s candidacy because he believes that teachers want to teach more and need to teach more. People depend on schools in the best of times. Today, they’re more important than ever. What’s more important than electing a school board member who understands this?

Looting, attacks on police wrong response

T

he death of George Floyd, a black man, by a white police officer named Derek Chauvin, who was later fired, arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughterin Minneapolis, has led to much violence. The killing generated widespread violence in Minneapolis and many cities in America, including Brooklyn, with vi-

olent incidents of arson, looting and vandalism by those with no regard for law and order. And that I find most sad.

These protests destroyed much private property owned by both white and black hardworking Americans who had nothing to do with with the death of George Floyd. And on top of all this, there were attack on police officers, who have a

responsibility to protect the protesters and to prevent violence and to safeguard lives in the many communities that depend on them. This I find quite troubling.

Our Constitution states in part that we are allowed the freedom of speech and the right to peacefully assemble to protest but not to harm others or to destroy property. As

a white teenager in the 1960s, I marched for civil rights and believed in the equality of men and women of all races. I think if Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today he would have shred a tear for those who acted violently against racism.

The hate in our country must end and love and peace need to surface for the greater good of all. You see, we are all

brothers and sisters and our creator created us to love and to care for one another. My heartfelt prayers goes out to the family and friends and neighbors of George Floyd who lost someone near and dear to them.

Sassuoni deserves re-elect based on record

T

he Great Neck Public School District is facing one of the biggest challenges it will ever see.

Although nobody knows the details at this time, it is clear that the state of New York will be drastically cutting funding. On May 11, Gov. Cuomo presented an estimate of 20 percent aid cuts for all school districts in the state. There is a strong possibility there will be shortfalls from other sources. The key point is that the near future brings deep uncertainty.

Great Neck residents are being asked to vote (by mail) for two Board of Education trustee positions. Jeffrey Shi is running

unopposed. For the other position, John Jahng has chosen to oppose Rebecca Sassuoni.

Mr. Jahng presented himself and his credentials at a virtual meeting I attended. In the meeting I attended, when Mr. Jahng was asked how many board meetings he has attended (as an indicator of his familiarity with board matters), Mr. Jahng said the most recent board meeting, via YouTube, was the first meeting he had ever attended. When Mr. Jahng was asked what he thought the biggest budget challenge the district faces is, he deflected.

When Mr. Jahng was asked to explain the thinking on his deci-

sion to oppose Ms. Sassuoni and leave Mr. Shi unopposed, Mr. Jahng said he had “no answer”.

Mr. Jahng’s platform seems to be that he is a smart, successful man in the hedge fund world and that these hedge fund skills will translate well to a trustee position.

Ms. Sassuoni, a current trustee, has a solo practice in the area of education law. On a daily basis, in her professional role as an attorney and in her role as a trustee, Ms. Sassuoni is tasked with digging extraordinarily deep into the rules and regulations regarding education. Ensuring that students are treated fairly and justly is

her life’s work. Ms. Sassuoni is deeply aware of the current budget and all that entails, including revenue sources, discretionary and non-discretionary expenses, and status of reserves and capital accounts. This knowledge is not trivial and nobody, no matter how bright, can become an education expert like Ms. Sassuoni, by the time the projected state budget cuts will hit, which is imminent.

I urge every voter to vote for the stability and knowledge that Ms. Sassuoni represents, and that our school district needs in this unprecedented time.

As a final note, in the

School Board Election of 2017, I wrote a similar letter pointing out Mr. Shi’s lack of qualifications for the role of trustee. Several members of the community called me a racist for opposing Mr. Shi in a public Facebook group. Some of these people I never met, and I never received an apology from anyone. As I stated in 2017, I simply cannot believe that anyone in our educated, sophisticated community of Great Neck would let a candidate’s ethnicity affect their vote, either for or against.

Sassouni most qualified for ed board seat

I

write in my own capacity as a Great Neck resident to urge you to re-elect Rebecca Sassouni as trustee to the GNPS Board of Education. In our current environment of so many unknowns, I know Rebecca. I have worked alongside Rebecca in parent leadership roles for the last eight years and she has demonstrated she is the best choice for the trustee seat.

Rebecca began her involvement in the schools many years ago as an elementary school parent. She was one of the original proponents of establishing a pre-K on the North side of town nearly a decade ago (pre-K at

JFK opened in 2019 while she was trustee). She has represented the Great Neck Public Schools to our local legislators as the chair of the UPTC Legislative Committee. She has worked with our administrators and teachers in her various roles in the PTOs and as a parent member on district search committees, being selected to offer the parent point of view in building administrator hiring decisions.

I witnessed Rebecca’s dedication in those roles and I served with her on the district’s Citizens Advisory Committee, both when she was a parent member and as she headed the

same committee as a trustee.

She consistently gave voice to and advocated for all residents and asked pertinent questions of residents, other board members and district central administrators. She has earned the respect of every stakeholder she has worked with in her parent leadership roles and has continued to earn their respect in her role as trustee.

Rebecca has been a community leader in Great Neck beyond the schools. She has relationships with various community and religious organizations, including being on the board at SHAI and working on

partnerships with GNCA. Rebecca is accessible to all North and South public school parents.

She listens attentively and is empathetic, strengths she finetuned as an education lawyer representing students in other school districts. Her integrity precludes her from discussing ongoing board matters with parents, but she has been open to listening to criticism and suggestions. She can and has brought the perspective of different constituents to the Board of Education and has the connections within these communities to elicit feedback to take back to the boardroom.

She has a solid foundational knowledge of board and educational policy, making her the most qualified and experienced candidate for her trustee seat.

Rebecca has shown in the last three years the dedication, understanding, integrity, and fierce public education advocacy necessary to be the steward of our children’s education. Please join me in re-electing Rebecca Sassouni to the Board of Education by sending in your mail in ballot

Attend VGN Zoom meet on pending pool law

I

t is my understanding that Mayor Bral intends to pass a new law that will make it possible for VGN residents to install in-ground (or aboveground) pools in their backyards needing only the approval of the Building Department. This is totally inappropriate and undemocratic. It is yet another example of the mayor undercutting the important roles of our other Village committees—the BZA, the Planning Board, and the Architectural Review Board.

If this law is enacted, there will be no need to put the project on any Village agenda.

Neighbors will not be given any advance notice—they’ll have no opportunity to raise questions

and objections. Of course, there will be no oversight by our other Village committees, which is especially important for this type of project.

Installing a large pool of any kind is a substantial project— one which may have a major impact on one’s neighbors. The first thing that comes to mind is what happens if the pool should develop a leak. If the neighboring properties happen to be downhill of the property in question, there is a good chance that serious flooding will occur as the water flows downhill. Such flooding could take place as well if the pool owners do not know (or care) how to properly drain their pool.

Flooding alone is not the only issue. Almost every pool has chlorine in it. As we all know, chlorine is a poison, and if not properly dealt with, it can do serious damage to surrounding soil, plants and animals. Chlorine may splash into a neighbor’s yard when children are playing in the pool. Chlorine also has a very noticeable odor, which can disturb neighbors, even it is dealt with properly.

Another potential intrusion relating to pools is the likely installation of bright lights, which are very likely to shine onto the neighboring properties at night.

Another probable result of installing a pool is the destruction of trees and other flora.

Aside from having a negative impact on the environment and on the beauty of a particular property, the loss of trees can have a serious negative impact on neighboring properties as well. Many homes are provided with shade and protection from the wind by trees on their neighbors’ properties.

Let’s remember that most of the properties in the Village of Great Neck are small—houses are very close to one another.

This is not Kings Point. Any large project such as a pool installation will be very readily noticeable to all neighbors, and may have various impacts on their ability to enjoy their own backyards. If something should go

wrong, you can guarantee that the neighbors will sue the pool owner, and the Village as well.

Sassouni needed on ed board facing challenges

I

am endorsing Rebecca Sassouni for re-election to the Board of Education for the Great Neck School District with ‘eyes wide open’ regarding the challenges facing our schools, the growing discontent of voters for budgets, taxes, and government in general.

Rebecca knows this and has the temerity to address the elephant(s) in the room at meetings of the board, articles in our local press and in long conversations with constituents like my-

self.

Increased home assessments, limits on tax deductions due to SALT legislation, the COVID virus causing widespread death and illness, but equally, negatively impacting wages, business, state and local revenue has Ms. Sassouni looking ahead to fall and beyond thinking about public school enrollment, the ability for households to continue to pay private school tuition and physical building readiness for the possible increased student population.

She doesn’t have ready answers, but Rebecca Sassouni is the experienced, smart, energetic advocate Great Neck needs going forward. Having served only one term, she deserves the chance to make a real mark on our future.

Let’s us address another issue just under the surface, more diversity (read Asian, Persian) in local government.

Notwithstanding that I am proud we have both populations currently on the school board, the library board and a sitting state

senator. I understand the sentiment and believe more representation and diversity should be pursued.

We need qualified candidates from every ethnicity to run for office. Qualified means the candidate plans to attend meetings for ayear, ask questions and make comments where appropriate, request more information and documentsfrom the institutions involved. Submit an op-ed piece outlining your vision.

Let those in attendance and

the community get to ‘know’ you.

Then, I ask you to run against and unseat one of these 15-, 20-, 30-year incumbents so we could benefit from new ideas and energy.

Yes, I said it. Board members, town councilman/woman officials were not intended to be lifetime positions. Cap your lifetime of service by retiring, a dignified, generous act of humility.

& Alternatives to traditional graduation ceremonies When the novel coronavirus COVID-19 struck the world at the end of 2019, few people anticipated just how much the virus would upend daily life in the months to come. Because there currently is no cure or standardized treatment for the disease, the best course of action has involved maintaining social distance to help cut down on the rate of spread.

Social distancing has changed the way the public shops, interacts socially with friends and family members and attends school. For the thousands of students comprising the class of 2020, social distancing also changes how they will graduate.

Graduation decisions are something high schools and colleges have grappled with in the face of social distancing. Graduation has become a modify-as-you-go model in many towns and cities. In some instances,

all in-person ceremonies have been restricted and virtual-only graduations will take place. For example, New Jersey’s Department of Education was only allowing virtual graduation events as graduation season approached.

Other parts of the country have been approaching graduation plans in various ways. The Tucson Unified School District postponed its graduation ceremonies to late June rather than canceling them altogether.

Schools in Spotsylvania and Fauquier Counties in Virginia held modified versions of in-person ceremonies in May, which limited the number of family members in attendance and required relatives to hand out diplomas as a safety precaution. Students in Cherry Creek School District in Colorado found out they will have a modified in-person, students-only graduation ceremony in July. Relatives can watch

the ceremony on a live stream.

The Army will proceed with this year’s graduation ceremony at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in June, with President Donald Trump giving the commencement speech for cadets. The 1,000 cadets will return to campus to attend the ceremony, which will include procession changes and other social distancing modifications in line with current health requirements.

Whether a school hosts a graduation ceremony in-person or not, families can organize their own at-home graduations. All relatives who are graduating (whether from high school, college or even those moving up from fifth grade to middle school and eighth grade to high school) can participate.

Here are a few tips: · Pool resources to borrow the right number of caps or gowns from friends or family.

· Play “Pomp and Circumstance” over a bluetooth speaker. · Have the graduates march around the perimeter of a yard or down a neighborhood street. · Ask a relative to give a keynote speech. · Take graduation photos outside of the school doors or on campus where allowed. · Cater a graduation luncheon or dinner from a favorite neighborhood eatery. · Employ all necessary safety precautions, such as seating guests six feet apart from one another and wearing masks.

Graduation ceremonies have changed due to COVID-19, but graduates can still commemorate this milestone moment in their lives.

How to throw an entertaining virtual prom Many schools were temporarily shuttered in March 2020 due to restrictions related to the COVID-19 virus. Within weeks of instituting those closures, many governors and school districts announced that school buildings would be closed for the remainder of the academic year, and all in-person school activities would be canceled.

The class of 2020 was especially affected by those closures, as traditional proms and graduation ceremonies were deemed unsafe. But just because students cannot gather in person to celebrate prom, that does not mean this celebrated rite of passage cannot take place at all. The popularity of video conferencing apps for everything from school lessons to work meetings to social parties can be the foundation on which virtual proms are built. With technology and a little creativity, it’s possible to throw a prom to remember.

Pick a digital platform First, choose a video-conferencing platform that enables a large number of people to join the hangout.

If you’re hosting an intimate gathering of only a few friends, you may have more options to choose from.

FaceTime can loop in up to 32 iOS devices. Skype can work with 50 devices. Google Hangouts shows

10 people at once on the screen, while Houseparty allows eight people per “room.”

Consider a theme Just like a traditional prom, plan a theme for your virtual prom. Purchase and distribute props and decorations (or ask friends to do so individually) that can help unify the prom experience for all participants and serve as the backdrop for the festivities.

Plan photo ops Use the screen capture function of devices to take commemorative photos. Try to match prom “dates” together in images so that photos can be printed and framed. Some people also may consider taking prom photos in front of their schools (so long as they adhere to social distancing guidelines), and then asking a savvy digital photo artist to manipulate the photos so the subjects appear close together.

Wear your prom finest Many students purchased prom dresses before social distancing measures were put in place, as shopping trips and fittings tend to begin several months before the big night. Gentlemen can don a suit or a tuxedo if they have one. Make your best attempt at a

prom-worthy hairdo and makeup application, utilizing any of the multitude of online makeup tutorials.

Enlist the help of a DJ A family member or friend can coordinate a playlist that includes plenty of opportunities for dancing, with softer music interludes for when it’s time to “mingle” and converse. You also may want to reach out to a professional DJ. He or she may offer a discounted rate or complementary service to provide music for the prom in return for the free publicity. Incorporate the DJ into the virtual video meeting with an invitation.

Drive-by after party If local laws allow it, plan a motorcade in which you drive by your alma mater, honking and cheering on fellow prom-goers and graduates-to-be.

Traditional proms and graduation ceremonies are casualties of the COVID-19 restrictions. However, there is still be fun to be had for those with open minds.

Reading can help get kids ready to go back to school It is common for children to backslide during summer vacations as they get further away from their daily school year routines. The rigors of schoolwork may come as a shock as children return to school and must reacquaint themselves with studying and doing their homework. But there are some steps students can take to keep their minds sharp as they ease back into school.

One of the most effective ways for students to stay sharp over summer is to continue reading. Pearson Education says evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better on reading tests than those who don't, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures. Reading for pleasure also bears more influence on a child's academic performance than his or her social or economic background.

Summer reading assignments may not be mandated, but children can take it upon themselves to continually push themselves through recreational reading and language arts pursuits. Here are ways that parents can facilitate that process. · Set up a reading time. Children should have a set time each day that they devote to reading. Many find a

regular reading time later in the evening before bed or as a precursor to other activities, such as watching television or playing video games, can help make reading a priority. · Keep fresh reading materials.

Stock the house with new books, magazines, newspapers, and even graphic novels. The more reading materials children have access to, the more likely they are to become habitual readers. · Parents can lead by example. Parents should read as well. Choose books and periodicals over time spent on digital devices. · Read in the world around you.

Stop and read signs, menus, cereal boxes, billboards, and anything with the written word. Jot down difficult words and look them up together and discuss the definitions. · Consult with the teacher. Educators have tools they use to assess reading levels and abilities. Knowing a child's reading level and choosing the appropriate reading materials for that level can set kids up for success.

Reading is an important part of getting into the back-to-school groove.

Make sure students set aside ample time for reading throughout the day, even during extended breaks from school.

2,500 protest George Floyd’s murder

BY R OB E RT PE L A E Z More than 2,500 people held a peaceful protest in front of Nassau County’s Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building in Mineola on Monday evening to combat institutionalized racism.

Protests featuring peaceful walks or displays of solidarity as well as looting and rioting have occurred throughout the nation after George Floyd, a 46-year-old African-American man, was arrested and died in police custody in Minnesota.

“I was horrified after watching the video of the death of George Floyd, and hearing his cries. I believe charges must be brought to ensure the accountability and justice all should expect in our nation,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said.

According to Meg Norris, the editor and publisher for Litmor Publishing Corp., “around half” of the crowd was made up of white individuals, and a majority consisted of people under the age of 30.

Norris said marchers stuck to the middle of the roads while the police walked alongside on the sidewalks. Protesters urged people who were watching along the way to join in and there were no incidents of damage to homes or businesses.

At several intersections on Jericho Turnpike, Norris said, the police tried to stop the march by blocking the road with vehicles. However, the marchers just went

Norris said county police marched up the center of Franklin Avenue and took positions every 20 feet or so. This angered some in the crowd, who then knelt down and began chanting “Take a knee” to the police. Norris said the police did not respond.

Social media rumors spread regarding potential looting at the Roosevelt Field Mall but they proved to be untrue.

“Although demonstrations on Long Island have remained peaceful, we continue to see concerning rumors circulate online threatening violence or looting in Nassau County. We take these threats very seriously,” a joint statement by Curran and Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said. “We want to assure residents that Nassau County PD is taking every precaution necessary to keep residents safe –

including those peacefully demonstrating tonight.”

Floyd was arrested on May 25 by Minneapolis police officers after a deli employee contacted authorities, accusing him of buying cigarettes with a counterfeit $20 bill, according to news reports.

A viral video showed Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin holding his knee on Floyd’s neck. A criminal complaint from the Hennepin County attorney’s office said, “The defendant had his knee on Mr. Floyd’s neck for 8 minutes and 46 seconds in total. Two minutes and 53 seconds of this was after Mr. Floyd was nonresponsive.”

Chauvin, who is white, was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter on Friday, according to news reports.

He was one of four officers fired from the Police Department due to the incident.

The complaint said three factors contributed to Floyd’s death, “The combined effects of Mr. Floyd being restrained by the police, his underlying health conditions and any potential intoxicants in his system likely contributed to his death.”

“Nassau is committed to community policing because it works. Building trust works, and we always strive to do better,” Curran said. “We’ll continue to build bridges between law enforcement and the communities we serve, and use this tragic moment to renew and strengthen engagement and understanding.”

Sassouni has achieved on, off the board

I

n this troubled world there are those people who put all their efforts into improving all those lives they touch in addition to who going above and beyond the call of duty. This kind of person is one we must take notice in addition to gaining our admiration, support and respect.

I refer to Rebecca Sassouni who is now seeking a second term for election as Trustee to the Great Neck Public School Board

of Education.

I have watched, observed and marveled at Rebecca’s insight, maturity and care that she has demonstrated during more than the decade that I have known her. Rebecca has been a Great Neck resident for more than 26 years, her four children were educated in the Great Neck School system. Consequently, as a parent of children enrolled in the Great Neck public school

system, she has experienced first hand to determine what is best as a trustee.

During the past three years of her service as trustee, she has served the system well.

Rebecca’s achievements are many that have had an impact on our community on many levels.

Before her election to the Board in 2017, Rebecca was active in the Citizens Advisory Council for the United Parent Teacher Coun-

cil, which laid the groundwork for perceiving the most positive programs that could be implemented from a parent’s standpoint and then as a trustee.

Her involvement as an attorney and a member of the Nassau County Bar Association has given her further discernment as to the legal workings of the Great Neck school system.

As a member of the Board, Rebecca’s efforts were recog-

nized by her colleagues on the Board by electing her Alternative Vice-President.

Given all of Rebecca’s accomplishments, her re-election as trustee to the Great Neck Board of Education would be a wise choice. Please join me to re-elect her. We will all benefit from her service.

Hold line on Port spending with budget no vote

I

’m sorry to see our proposed Port Washington school budget has an increase of over $2,600,000 that comes with a tax increase.

Today many people are strug-

gling with economic and health problems. School costs for certain activities should have been reduced in recent months. Maintenance, utility costs, overtime, teacher aides and assistants and

busing costs should all be down.

Half our teachers now earn over $123,000 per year and have very generous pension and other benefits, so hopefully, a salary freeze for teachers with 20+

years could be negotiated in the new contract. With all of these facts in mind, I thought our BOE could present a frozen or even slightly lower budget.

While our budget may be ap-

proved, I’m voting no.

The time to act against racism is now

W

atching the video from Minneapolis, I couldn’t help but feel that the three policemen who watched George Floyd die were just as culpable as the policeman

with his knee on George’s neck.

But then I started to think that if I was going to assign them blame for their inaction, there are a lot of others who should share that blame.

All of us have repeatedly seen how easily black men lose their lives by the wantonly cruel actions of the police.

And yet when have we raised our voices to say “enough?” to demand change by our police

commissioners, by our mayors, by our governors.

Our silence is at least partially responsible for George’s death. But let us put past inaction aside and let the current moment galvanize us to com-

pel the change that our better angels demand.

Cuomo overstates readiness of major projects

A

t a recent meeting at the White House, Gov. Andrew Cuomo made a case to President Trump for billions in additional federal assistance. This was dishonest and misleading.

Albany faces a $12 billion deficit this year. Cuomo’s claim of needing $64 billion to maintain essential state services represented a potential shortfall over four years. The $29 billion Gateway Tunnel, $6.9 billion Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 and $2 billion LaGuardia Air Train are not “shovel ready” as Cuomo said.

Only the $1.6 billion Portal Bridge (a key facility on the Northeast Corridor used by both New Jersey Transit and Amtrak between Trenton and Manhattan) is shovel ready. It is one component of the Gateway Tunnel. It consists of a new Hudson River Tunnel that

would provide additional access to Penn Station for New Jersey Transit & Amtrak, rehabilitation of two existing tunnels badly damaged by Super Storm Sandy in 2012 and Portal Bridge along with expansion of Penn Station tracks, platforms and concourses to increase capacity. Work on the Portal Bridge could begin within months after completion of a procurement process for hiring of a construction contractor, followed by a formal Notice to Proceed.

The LaGuardia Air train will not complete the federal NEPA environmental review process until 2021. The Federal Aviation Administration needs to issue a formal finding for conclusion of the NEPA process. Another year is needed for completion of final design and engineering before construction contracts can be adver-

tised and awarded followed by a notice to proceed to the contractor in late 2022 or early 2023. The LaGuardia Air Train would provide a new connection from LaGuardia Airport via the Air Train to both the Long Island Rail Road Port Washington branch and New York City Transit’s No. 7 Flushing Subway Willets Point stations. Riders would have to transfer from the Air Train to either the LIRR or subway and continue their journey before reaching Midtown Manhattan.

Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 completed the federal NEPA environmental review process with a positive finding from the Federal Transit Administration in 2019.This would extend NYC Transit subway service north along Second Avenue from the existing96th Street Second AvenueStationto 125th Street.Three new sta-

tions will be constructed at 106th Street, 116th Street and 125th Street. A transfer will also be available to the Lexington Avenue subwayand an intermodal connection with Metro North Rail Roadwould be available at the Harlem– 125th Street station.

According to the FTA February 2020 New Starts report for federal fiscal year 2021 (Oct. 1, 2020 — Sept. 30, 2021), the MTA anticipates approval to enter final design and engineering this year. This would be followed with receipt of a Full Funding Grant Agreement from the Federal Transit Administration before the end of 2020. This might provide up to $3.5 billion in federal dollars toward the $6.9 billion total cost. It is unrealistic to assume entering final design and engineering followed by obtaining approval of an FFGA from FTA

within the same year with less than seven months remaining.

n response to John Mangin’s dissatisfaction with negative media portrayals of President Trump’s response to the global pandemic, here are a few “pesky facts” that Mr. Mangin failed to mention: 1) Trump disbanded the White House global pandemic response directorate; 2) At a rally in South Carolina on Feb. 28, Trump labeled the virus the Democrats’

“new hoax;” 3) On Trump’s watch, the U.S. squandered a critical month in developing and scaling up Covid -19 testing; 4) Trump balked at leading a national, coordinated response to the pandemic, leaving many key challenges to the states; 5) Trump spreads dangerous medical advice, such as ingesting Lysol and taking chloroquine as a preventative, to those people who still listen to what he says; 6) Trump

fails to take his own experts’ advice, such as wearing a mask in public and he encourages armed mobs to oppose public health regulations.

This list could go on, but I would simply ask Mr. Mangin, when have we ever had a president who refuses to take responsibility for problems — in this case, an unprecedented national crisis — happening on his watch? What kind of a lead-

er, after three years in office, would blame his predecessor for this national crisis?

Certainly, it is impossible to respect a man holding the most powerful position in the world who is unable to accept any responsibility for the more than 100,000 Americans who have died of this virus.

GOP-backed pharma group runs ad for Suozzi

f a front group run by pharmaceutical lobbyists and Republican political operatives were showering praise on a U.S. congressman and running a reelection ad on his behalf, would this make him more or less trustworthy? Would this make him more or less likely to fight on behalf of his constituents rather than on behalf of corporate interests?

All eligible Democratic voters in New York’s 3rd Congressional District will have to ask themselves these questions as they cast their ballots in this month’s primary.

Over the past few days, the Alliance for Patient Access has been running an online pop-up ad declaring incumbent Democratic Congressman Tom Suozzi a “champion of patient access” and suggesting constituents reach out to thank him for his efforts.

What the ad doesn’t mention is that the tax-exempt group receives funding from major prescription drug manufactur-

ers and has previously advocated against prescription-drug price controls and other reforms.

The ad also doesn’t mention the incestuous relationship between the Alliance for Patient Access and the Washington consulting firm that it shares office space with and directs its business to, Woodberry Associates.

An individual named Josie Cooper acts as both the executive director of the Alliance for Patient Access and the head of “stakeholder engagement” at Woodberry Associates. Cooper also previously worked on Republican Joni Ernst’s senatorial campaign, as well the presidential campaigns of Republicans Scott Walker and Ted Cruz.

The prior executive director of the Alliance for Patient Access, Brian Kennedy, is the president of Woodberry Associates.

He also previously served as the executive director of the Republican Governors Association.

While I’m sure none of this would be damaging information if Suozzi were running in a Republican primary, it should seriously disturb Democratic primary voters.

Do you want a representative who is indebted to their constituents or one who is indebted to multibillion-dollar pharmaceutical companies? Do you want a representative who garners the support of grassroots organizations or one who garners the support of astroturfed ones?

Again, if you are voting in this month’s primary, ask yourself these important questions before completing your ballot.

You don’t have to settle for a corrupt, dishonest incumbent. You deserve someone who will truly be your advocate in Washington. You deserve better.

Standing together against racism

T

he brutal murder of George Floyd is another shocking reminder about the blatant and continuous racism against the African American community.

The anger and disillusionment being expressed throughout our country attest to the growing frustration with the type of brutality directed at African-Americans and other people of color.

Discrimination persists on multiple levels and in far too many institutions in American society. Beyond mere words of prayer or consolation, it is time for

people of good will and faith to become more pro-active in holding ourselves and our communities accountable for working in greater partnership to eliminate hatred, as it brings dishonor to us and to the United States.

The Torah scriptural reading for this Sabbath refers to punishment for theft.

Although the text specifies how the thief must admit his or her guilt, it suggests a broader inclusion of anyone, who must step forward to admit responsibility for any wrongdoing. When it comes to the persistence of racism, each of us in

some form, bears responsibility for not doing enough to combat this national disease.

My faith tradition demands that we regard each person as created in God’s image; and that the murder of one human being constitutes a murderous offense against the entire world.

It is incumbent upon all people within the Jewish community therefore, to speak out relentlessly against racism in all its ugly forms, and to remain vigilant until racism and hate are eradicated from our world. Although I will never

condone any violent demonstration, which equally dishonors humanity, I stand with so many, who have publicly demonstrated even in the midst of our pandemic.

My fervent hope is that one day soon, racism will become obsolete. In the meantime, may Americans of various cultures and faiths stand together to fight hatred and discrimination with every fiber of our being.

Downsizing, upgrading or staying put?

As the number of Covid-19 infestations and hospitalizations have been decreasing in New York state, Phase 1 reopening of businesses has slowly begun as well as in the other 49 states. However, there are still 16 states where the infection numbers have escalated over the last 14 days mainly due to increased testing. Phase 2 will hopefully be occurring in and around Long Island, and possibly Queens and New York City, over the next few weeks, allowing Realtors to finally abandon their home confinement and be able to legally and safely be in a position to meet with clients at properties.

One question I have been pondering is whether sellers and purchasers’ plans might have or might be changing due to Covid-19. Will staying in place make more sense due to the apparent and still current fear of contracting the virus?

Will the lack of sufficient money be a factor and play a role in the decision not to buy a single-family detached home but instead a condo, townhome, or co-op? However, there may be those whose businesses and internet-based incomes have not been affected and are

able to upgrade to a larger home, thinking there could be a better deal and more advantageous situation, especially with the current low historic interest rates. There is such a glut of luxury homes, especially in New York City where the choices are there for those who have the “mega incomes” to afford being there.

But my professional opinion is we will see many abandon the city (as I am seeing the traffic online of those looking at homes) and move out to Nassau where prices (and no city income tax) are so much less per square foot than the average one bedroom that has been going for $1 million in the hot spots of the city and Brooklyn. The exodus out of New York state will also be exacerbated, too, because of Covid-19 and the burdensome cost of living as people move to less congested states. Other states are providing job benefits as well and some have no state income tax as we have here.

Currently in Nassau, where towns have homes priced at $1.2 million and higher, there is more room for negotiation than for homes at lower price points. Av-

erage sold home prices have increased 10.59 percent and median sold prices are up 9.11 percent over the last six months. However, due to Covid-19 contracts are down 68.78 percent over the last six months through April 2020.

Closed transactions are down 37.29 percent.

The higher-priced homes are taking much longer to secure a buyer, bringing the time to sell or the absorption rate up to 10.5 months, and once May statistics are out that number will most probably increase. The statistics relate to the number of listings

that are on the market as well as buyer demand and relation to seller contracts. The third quarter (July-September) could show a bounce-back based on many economist’s predictions, which is positive.

However, I am waiting to see how many jobs and businesses (especially restaurants and retail) are permanently lost, not only due to the virus but to the effects of consumers’ only choice for the last two months — purchasing what they need online via Amazon and other internet portals. Even commercial rentals will be adversely impacted since a new way to go to work is at home through the internet as companies decide to reduce their office footprint going forward.

Also, how many homeowners will not want to move and just live their lives staying in place due to the new health and safety regulations that are in effect? Choosing to stay will require retrofitting their homes as they age in place into their golden years and making their living environment easier and safer to navigate, adding a stair lift or even building a master bedroom on the first floor. But if the desire

to move is the answer, then maybe the solution is to find a ranch-style home where everything is on one level. It is extremely complicated and the path that we take in the “new norm” of how we live will have so many varied twists and turns that will interact with each other. Having a solid plan as much in advance as possible will help in reducing the stress and anxiety that will result in all the necessary and required decisions that many will face and deal with. However, I do believe things will improve over the next few years and that the American Dream is still strong and alive, especially among those creating families and who want to build their future wealth and leave their rentals behind.

Grads reflect on personal growth

Both Kreinik and Prawer said they will be taking gap years before going to college.

Kreinik said she will attend Stern College for Women after her gap year in Israel, while Prawer said he will attend Ye-

shiva University’s honors program after his gap year.

Both students touted their study habits when speaking on why they felt they were selected as this year’s valedictorians.

“I had to put in time and effort for work and studying,” Prawer said. “I want to spend my gap year before attending Yeshiva University to study, develop my character and work on myself, along with intellectual

pursuits.”

“If I were to go back in time and give my freshmen self some advice, I’d say to never be afraid to ask questions,” Kreinik said.

“It’s hard to learn anything when you don’t ask any questions to begin with.”

Prawer and Kreinik admitted that graduating without a traditional ceremony was not the way either anticipated capping off their four years of high

school. Regardless, both advised their classmates and fellow seniors throughout the nation to take this time and reflect on all the good that high school offered them.

“It’s hard and difficult to not be graduating traditionally or signing each other’s yearbooks, but there is a lot to look forward to in life,” Kreinik said. “Look fondly upon the last four years, but remember they were just a

foundation to the rest of your life. This is not the end.”

“It definitely sucks, and there’s no other way of framing it,” Prawer said. “I feel it, we all feel it. We all should try to come out of this craziness with something changed about yourself.

It’s easy to have epiphanies and great personal growth during the good times, but what’s difficult is to have them in the bad times as well.”

Curran is expediting the permitting process for county roads so a village could, say, close the street one or two nights a week. “No paperwork, snail mail or fees and we are committed to approving the permit within one week,” she said.

Richard Kessel, chairman of the Nassau Industrial Development Agency, lauded Curran’s work with municipalities in trying to reopen Nassau’s downtowns quickly and safely.

“County Executive Curran did a great job and we give her a lot of credit to use county roads, especially main streets to open up with outdoor dining and working with villages to do so,” he said.

Even though the proposal would mainly affect roads owned by the town or county, Kessel said, villages would still need to file permits to allow for restaurants within the village to participate in outdoor dining options.

Officials from the Town of North Hempstead said the town will follow the lead of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the state in its decision-making, but preliminary talks have been held.

“At this time closing main streets is not permissible as per the Governor,” the statement from town officials said.

A discussion within the Village of Great Neck took place on Tuesday night, where the board authorized Mayor Pedram Bral to arrange street closings as he sees fit whenever Cuomo deems outdoor dining to be appropriate.

As of now, dining is considered to be a part of the third phase in New York’s reopening plan, but Curran said she will work hard to try and push it into phase two.

It may not work for all communities, but those municipalities who see the benefit can apply at nassaucounty.gov/ openstreets.

Farmingdale initially presented the idea to transform its Main Street to outdoor dining. The plan will provide for 424 socially distanced seats and utilize parking lots.

A second business-friendly economic revitalization initiative is to facilitate acquiring personal protective equipment so local businesses can meet the guidelines for reopening.

“One of the main questions from

chambers has been where businesses can get the personal protective equipment for their employees,” Curran said.

The county is enlisting its Industrial Development Agency, which in partnership with the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development is investing $500,000 to purchase personal protective equipment kits for small businesses.

Each kit consists of a contactless infrared thermometer, five face shields, 400 three-ply masks, 100 pairs of gloves, two gallons of sanitizer and sanitary wipes.

The county is purchasing enough to supply 1,000 businesses on a first-come, first-served basis (apply at boostnassau. net). The county is particularly targeting small businesses – minority and womenowned – that were “passed over” by the federal small-business relief program.

Kessel said he hopes the personal protective equipment provisions will encourage small businesses to participate.

New York state passed legislation to allocate Nassau County IDA up to $10,000 in grants, and $25,000 in loans for additional PPE. “It’s an important tool to expand business receipts while mitigating risk,”

Curran said.

There is urgency, she added, to get back to business in a way that also mitigates the risk of spreading the coronavirus.

“We know PPE works. Any coming back requires PPE,” Curran said. “Now we can begin reopening.”

Curran estimated that a couple of dozen villages could take advantage of this program because the main street is a county road, but other villages could use the same “tool kit” on village or town roads. “We will share the tool kit.”

This program complies with the restriction on restaurants for curbside and carry-out; in phase 3 of the state’s reopening plan, restaurants will be able to have indoor table service.

“This is an innovation, not a loophole, so the community can work their way back,” Curran said.

What if “stupid” people abuse the rules? “Our residents have been doing a smart job,” Curran said. “We can handle our freedom.”

But Curran said, pointing to the relationship between business and local government, “the success of business in Nassau County is linked to the services county government provides – police, fire, EMT, health, DPW all continuing to provide services; 40% of the county’s budget is generated from sales tax, so the success of business is also tied to the success of the county to provide services.”

Nassau County is working with Suffolk – “One Long Island” – to hit the benchmarks to reopen under the state’s matrix. Both Nassau and Suffolk have suffered some of the highest rates of COVID-19 in the country, totaling 79,499 confirmed cases. New York City so far has recorded 201,051 cases.

The rates of infection, though, have come down dramatically as a result of the lockdown and social distancing measures.

As of Tuesday, there were a total of 40,572 cases, and 2,127 coronavirus-related deaths, throughout Nassau County, according to statistics provided by the county Department of Health.

David Zielenziger said he also opposes a change to the village law on swimming pools. “If someone took a look at the agenda they would know they would want to build a pool next door,” he said. “I don’t see how neighbors get any notification. I think it’s very important neighbors get a notification.”

He added that for the board to include language requiring the notification of neighbors would be an easy fix.

After discussion the amendment was approved by a vote of 4-0, with Trustee Annie Mendelson abstaining, notwithstanding that it may be subject to future amendment.

“I feel it should be amended to notify the neighbors,” Mendelson said. “I think it’s a simple addition. Neighbors should be included in the process and I think it should be part of this code change.”

Following the vote, the board mulled whether it would extend the law to require notification to any properties within a 200-foot radius, but decided to hold off until the matter can be further discussed at the next meeting on June 16.

In an executive session, the board discussed the Nassau County Open Streets plan, which sets a date for reopening local communities to outdoor and socially distant activities.

The board authorized Mayor Bral to arrange street closings as he sees fit when the governor deems outdoor dining is appropriate.

Bral explained that this is a compromise for those missing out on the opportunity of swimming in a public pool. He also said it is going to be a significant disadvantage for children who have to be sitting home all summer.

“I think we need to be mindful but at the same time we need to be fair about people who want to build a pool,” Bral said.

Great Neck resident Judy Rosenthal disagreed with the mayor’s plea that this was a necessary move, echoing the remarks of Glass and other residents that the amendment could potentially remove input from neighbors.

“When you streamline you make something easy, and you’re eliminating process,” Rosenthal said. “How could this possibly be a fair and just thing for neighbors? While we only have three neighbors, does that make everyone else’s needs in the surrounding area less important? I hope we won’t be so smallminded about how we’re adversely impacting all our neighbors in the Village of Great Neck.”

Bral and the village’s superintendent of buildings, Stephen Haramis, said that the process will not change, but Haramis will make the final determination about plans.

According to the map, the New Hyde Park area had a total of 1,069 confirmed cases of the virus. North New Hyde Park, just south of Manhasset Hills and Lake Success, is the area with the most confirmed cases at 424, showing no increase from last week.

Mineola, Garden City, Williston Park and East Williston combined for a total of 745 cases.

A total of 783 residents throughout the Great Neck peninsula had tested positive for the virus, an increase of six from last week. The Great Neck peninsula saw the highest number of new cases throughout the North Shore over the past week, according to the figures.

The centralized villages, such as the Village of Great Neck and Great Neck Plaza, account for 389 of the area’s confirmed cases, an increase of two from the previous week. Kings Point still ranks third in the area’s confirmed cases with 99.

Manhasset, with 237 confirmed cases, has closer proximity to areas with more positive cases but had the lowest increase of cases over the past week with just one.

The town-governed parts of Manhasset, with 122 confirmed cases, along with North Hills, Flower Hill and Herricks, made up a majority of the area’s cases.

The villages of Manhasset Hills, Munsey Park, Plandome, Plandome Manor and Plandome Heights accounted for 114 cases, a number that did not see any growth from the previous week.

As of Tuesday, there were a total of 40,572 cases, and 2,127 coronavirus-related deaths, throughout Nassau County, according to statistics provided by the De-

partment of Health. Total hospitalizations in Nassau fell below 300 for the first time since the pandemic began.

The encouraging decline in positive cases, deaths, hospitalizations and patients on ventilators led Nassau to begin the first phase of reopening on Wednesday, May 27.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced over the weekend that dental offices could reopen beginning on Monday as part of the state’s phased reopening plan. Cuomo additionally announced that summer day camps would be permitted to reopen on June 29, while sleepaway camps are still under discussion.

Officials say Long Island is on track to begin phase two of the phased reopening, which includes barbershops and hair salons, next Wednesday.

Phase two, Cuomo said, is a more indepth look at each business on a case-bycase analysis, and finding the best ways to reopen. He said officials will determine a business’ essential service to the community, the risks of reopening and the importance of its reopening. Phase two would include retail, professional and administrative services, and real estate.

Phase three includes dine-in restaurants, and phase four would include large gatherings such as concerts and sporting events.

Cuomo said business owners must analyze the precautions and safeguards that will need to be potentially addressed for each business.

Two weeks must pass before the next part of the plan is implemented, Cuomo said, in order to effectively monitor its impact. He said two weeks covers the incubation period of the virus.

No more than 50 percent of the maximum capacity of a workplace can be used, protective equipment such as masks and gloves must be worn, and social distancing must be adhered to for all phases, according to the guidelines.
