hether by plane, train, or automobile, family vacations are what memories are made of.

But pet parents often face a dilemma when making their travel plans. What do you do with your beloved dog or cat when you’re heading out of town?

For some, the answer is obvious: Bring them along! If your pets are healthy, good-natured and adaptable, there’s no reason you can’t take them

with you on your travels. For instance, many pets do well in the car and welcome a long road trip but it’s important, though, that you know their personality before deciding if they’ll be hardy travelers.

If your trip requires airplane travel, think carefully before bringing your pets along. Plane travel is stressful for any pet, especially if they are traveling in the cargo section. Unless it’s unavoidable, we don’t recommend it.

Advanced and careful preparation

can ensure a safe and comfortable trip for everyone. Ideally, smaller pets that will easily fit in an airline regulated carrier can be placed under your seat, or the seat in front of you, during the flight.

When traveling with animals it is always best to contact your specific airline directly to see what they require to insure your pet’s safety.

The key to a happy vacation is planning ahead to make sure your fourlegged friend will have a happy, healthy experience regardless of the means of transportation.

First, about a week before your trip, visit your vet’s office to get your pet a clean bill of health, and to make sure they are up to date with their shots, and has received the appropriate flea, heartworm and tick repellant. “If the trip is going to be a lengthy one, bring along your pet’s medical records, especially if it has an existing medical condition,” says Dr. Mark Verdino, Senior Vice President and Chief of Veterinary Staff at North Shore Animal League America. And don’t forget to bring along medications, a recent health certificate and rabies vaccination certificates on your trip. (If you’re traveling out of the U.S., additional requirements may apply, so start the planning process months in advance.)

For anxious pets, anti-anxiety pills might provide relief, but never give your pet your own medication! “Pets should

only take medicine prescribed by a veterinarian,” says Dr. Verdino.

RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD: CAR SAFETY TIPS Breath of Fresh Air: Pets should be confined in well-ventilated travel carriers that give them plenty of room— enough to stand, sit and lay down, but not so much that they might get bumped around.

Buckle Up for Safety: Another option is to use a dog harness designed specifically for car travel, but cats should always be kept in carriers. Although many dogs love the feeling of fresh air blowing on their fur, don’t give in. “I can’t begin to count how many times I’ve treated a dog with a scratched eye or other facial injury because they’ve been riding in cars with their heads sticking out the window,” says Dr. Verdino. “It’s incredibly dangerous.”

Eat and Drink On the Go: Be sure to pack bottles of fresh water and some tasty treats for your pets. And don’t forget a collapsible bowl for pit stops. Also try to avoid sudden changes in their diet to prevent an upset stomach. Consistency is the key to a successful road trip with your pet.

Bathroom Breaks: Just like us, long road trips and staying hydrated takes a toll on your pet’s bladder. Be sure to stop at designated rest areas where you can take your pet for walks on leash so they can do their business.

When choosing a crate, purchase one in which your pet can lie down, stand up, sit, and circle around comfortably. Its imperative you always make sure the crate is well ventilated so your four legged friend can rest comfortably.

■ Avoid crates that are too large as your pet may become injured as a result of excessive movement. Remove leashes and never muzzle your pet while traveling.

■ Your pet’s name and contact information for your home and destination as well as “Live Animal” should be written on the outside of the crate. Also, make sure your pet always wears a collar with an identification tag. Breakaway collars are best for cats.

■ Having a recent picture of your pet on hand, as well as a written description of your pet (name, breed, sex, age, any microchip or tattoo numbers, a description of coat, color and unusual markings, weight and height), will give you peace of mind in case you get separated from your pet during travel. This information will be vital to reuniting with your best friend in the airport.

■ Tell every airline employee you come in contact with, on the ground and

in the air that you are traveling with a pet in cargo. This way, they’ll be ready if any additional considerations or attention may be required.

■ If the plane is delayed, or if you have any concerns about the welfare of your pet, insist that airline personnel check on the animal whenever feasible. In certain situations, removing the animal from the cargo hold and deplaning may be necessary.

PET FRIENDLY ACCOMMODATIONS Of course, before you bring along your furry family member, make sure you’ll have a place to lay your weary heads. If you’re staying with friends, don’t assume they’ll welcome your pet without asking. For petfriendly hotels or inns, do some research on the Internet. Many travel sites, like Expedia and Kayak.com include pet-friendly hotels.

Or simply search “pet-friendly lodging” or a similar term you’ll find many options. (A caveat: Just because a Marriott in one city takes pets, that doesn’t mean every Marriott is pet-friendly. Call ahead first.)

If your pets tend to be anxious or are just real homebodies, it’s probably best to keep them safe and sound in their own surroundings. Ask a trusted friend to watch him or her, or ask your veterinarian to recommend a licensed and insured pet sitter.

Planning your day on the Long Island

SOUND hether you have just a few hours or a whole day, there are plenty of ways to enjoy your day on the waters of the Long Island Sound. To get the most out of your day, it’s best to plan in advance.

You’ll need more than just your towel!

A day on the boat does require a prelaunch checklist to help make your next day on the water the best one yet.

Staying safe on the water is easy to do by following a few guidelines. Wearing a life jacket and knowing where safety equipment is located before getting underway is important because boating conditions can change quickly. Make sure you are wearing the appropriate size life jacket that fits properly and is a visible color like yellow or orange. Children 12 and under are required to wear a life

jacket at all times. When you have children on board, make sure they are aware that the steering wheel and throttle controls are off-limits.

If you are going out on your own boat, make sure you have the following required items in working order: life jackets for all passengers, anchor and line, air horn, flares, orange safety flag, medical kit, throwable flotation cushion, running lights (required at dusk), VHF radio and GPS navigation system.

DID YOU KNOW? Various ingredients in many popular sunscreen can enter the bloodstream after just one day of use, according to a recent study published in the medical journal JAMA. The study conducted by the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research examined 24 healthy volunteers who were randomly assigned to a spray or lotion sunscreen that contained avobenzone, oxybenzone or octocrylene or a cream sunscreen that contained the chemical ecamsule. Volunteers applied their sunscreen to 75 percent of their bodies each day for four days. By the end of the first day, five of the six participants who applied the ecamsule cream had levels of ecamsule in their blood that are considered significant. Participants who applied the other sunscreen, especially those who used products that contained oxybenzone, also showed significant levels of the chemical in their bloodstreams by the end of the first day. These findings are significant, as the chemical oxybenzone has been shown to be a common cause of contact allergies. However, scientists who responded to the study warned that it should not prevent people from applying sunscreen, as the Skin Cancer Foundation notes that more Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer each year than all other cancers combined.

On very hot days, consider grilling out, using the microwave, or using the Crock-Pot. Turning on your oven can add significantly to the heat of your home, making your AC work harder.

BEAUTY Warm weather invites all types of relaxing thoughts and behaviors. People embrace various ways of relaxing in the summer, from choosing lightweight clothes to spending more time on recreational pursuits to streamlining certain beauty practices.

Summer beauty routines may require minor changes to accommodate some of the environmental effects of hot weather and humidity. Consider the following tips to look and feel your best when the mercury rises. · Get a healthier glow. Many people equate health and vitality to tan skin. However, spending time outdoors in the sun or using indoor tanning beds that expose you to UV rays can increase your risk of skin cancer, including dangerous melanoma. The American Cancer Society says melanoma will account for more than 73,000 cases of invasive skin cancer in 2015.

Melanoma accounts for more than 9,900 of the roughly 13,000 skin cancer deaths each year. Sunless tanners and bronzers can give skin that sun-kissed look without the downside of exposure to UV rays. Those who must go out in the sun should wear a wide-brimmed hat and limit their exposure between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when the sun’s rays are at their strongest. · Try tinted moisturizer. A carefree, breezy look often means not being weighed down by a lot of makeup. It may be possible to skip foundation and rely only on concealer to cover up small blemishes or alleviate dark circles under the eyes. Another option to try is tinted moisturizer, which can keep skin supple and offer a light amount of color to even out pigment. BB creams also can provide you with an all-in-one beauty product, as such creams frequently contain sunscreen, color tinting and anti-aging ingredients. · Protect hair and skin. Relaxing in the summertime sun does not mean you should forgo protection.

Remember to always apply sunblock to all parts of your body. Some hair products contain sunblock to protect the scalp, and men who shave their heads or are naturally balding should be diligent about applying sunblock to the top of their heads. Don’t forget to apply sunblock to the tops of your feet and your ears. · Rinse hair after swimming. Chlorinated water and even saltwater can affect the color and texture of your hair. Those who color their hair may find frequent laps in the pool can change the hue of their hair or prevent color from lasting as long as it once did. Wet hair before going in the pool, and rinse out salt and chemicals afterward. A small application of leave-in conditioner before entering the water can help seal the hair cuticle and keep chemicals from being absorbed. · Don’t fight the elements. Many people go to great lengths to change what nature gave them. For example, those with curly hair will spend hours with straightening irons or special serums. Try to embrace the elements and your natural hair texture this summer.

ADOPTING A RECYCLING REGIMEN

ow that summer is in full swing, our weekends are full of barbeques, pool time, and other outdoor activities, which reminds us of how we need to protect and keep our environment clean. Even while soaking up the sun we can all reduce summer waste.

1. If you’re mowing the lawn this summer, you don’t need to bag your grass clippings. You can either leave on your lawn so that the valuable nutrients will be returned or you can add the clippings to your compost pile. Other yard waste includes plant materials, brush, small tree trimmings and spent soils generated by “do it yourself” efforts. The Town of North Hempstead recommends setting your yard waste at the curb the night before your designated yard waste collection day using paper lawn and leaf bags or set out loose in a labeled 20-32 gallon bin, preferably brown. Remember that brush and small branches (less than 2 inches in diameter) must be cut up to fit inside the bin or paper bag. If not, tie into bundles that don’t exceed 4 feet in length and 2 feet in width.

2. Planning a road trip or being on a beach or field? Try packing foods in reusable containers and always carry a reusable water bottle. According to the Town of North Hempstead, glass bottles and jars, as well as plastic bottles and jugs, should be rinsed out before taking out to your curb. Use 30-55 gallon clear plastic bags or a labeled 2-32 gallon recycling bin, preferably blue. Plastics can be tricky so be careful how you sort. You can recycle plastic from the fruit clamshells and plastic baskets, but you can’t recycle your old plastic pool toys. Think about buying those items made from recyclable materials to minimize the effects on the environment.

3. You can even recycle while you’re manning the grill. Aluminum cans, trays and foils should also be recycled along with any old parts of your barbeque. Recycle as you would your plastic items.

4. Getting organized is easier with the longer days so be aware of how you recycle your mixed paper and cardboard. The Town of North Hempstead accepts newspapers and magazines, white and colored paper, junk mail and shredded paper, soft cover books and folders, and brown cardboard and corrugated cardboard. The night before your designated recycling day, set out at the curb in 30-55 gallon clear recycling bins, preferably green.

Always check the bottom of your items to see if there is a number and a small recycling triangle. This small step will help you with the process.

It’s important to be aware of how summer activities can cause a fire. As a homeowner, you should be vigilant about taking the steps to protect your family and property this season.

Non-combustible mulch for gardening Everyone loves beautiful landscaping but mulch is a highly combustible material that can be easily ignited. Always try to provide a minimum of an 18-inch clearance between landscape mulch beds and combustible building materials, such as wood, vinyl siding and decks. If there is outdoor smoking on the warm summer nights, find the proper receptacle instead of tossing cigarettes and cigars on to the ground.

Outdoor Electrical Outlets Exterior outlets are in use all season long with different machinery. Do not overload the circuit and make sure that your exterior outlets are covered and GFCI/outdoor rated. Check your outdoor appliances to make sure that they are not too hot to the touch and if they are, unplug and let them cool down.

Fuel Containers Storing fuel for outdoor activities is dangerous if not done properly. Always store fuel containers outdoors and secured, preferably in a vented cage or cabinet. This location should have no electrical equipment, open flames or other sources of ignition present and should be protected from the heat of the summer sun to keep evaporation to a minimum. If you have spilled any fuel or other flammable material on your yard, be sure to have it removed or cleaned right away, especially during hotter temperatures so the sun’s heat doesn’t spark a fire.

Grilling Fires need to be avoided when grilling. Keep both your grill and the surrounding areas clean. Grill away from

the house as sparks can fly and a fire can quickly start. Remember to check for propane leaks. If the flame on your gas grill goes out, turn the gas and grill off and wait at least five minutes before you relight.

Decorative Candles, Tiki Torches and Bug Repellent Candles Commonly used on decks and porches, these decorative items need to be watched carefully as they burn. Make sure they are stable and be vigilant about any falling ashes or sparks onto flammable surfaces, such as a wood deck, and always keep away from combustible items.

Firepits or Chimineas Make sure the ground you are building your pit or placing your chiminea on is level and never operate beneath an overhang or an enclosed space. Maintain a safe distance away, especially children and pets, and never leave unattended.

Always extinguish the remaining embers safely.

Dryers Most people don’t associate dryers with fires but the lint can get caught in the vents allowing the dryer to overheat and possibly cause a fire. With all of the towels and excess laundry this season, you are bound to have more lint build up so check daily to make sure the vent is clean.

Fireworks All fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in Nassau County.

Fire Extinguishers Your fire extinguishers should be easily accessible and in working condition.

Making sure everyone knows its location and how it works can make all the difference.

Quick & Easy organizing tips

for your home

t’s hard to believe summer is actually here. The sun is shining and the days are longer. The kids are spending more time outside or possibly at camp, which gives you plenty of time to organize! Enjoy the fresh air while getting your home in tiptop shape.

Let’s start in the backyard. It is the primary entertaining space during the summer months with friends and family gathered around the barbecue. It makes sense to get your outdoor area prepared as the season kicks in to high gear.

Pile up all the cushions and use your vacuum attachment to remove any loose dirt and dust. Add a tablespoon of dish soap to a bucket of warm water and sponge off any stains. Baby wipes can sometimes be helpful too! Rinse the cushions with plain water, wrap each cushion with a towel to absorb all the moisture and leave them out in the sun to dry thoroughly. Rotate or flip them half way through the day so no moisture remains. A fresh bucket of soapy water can also be used to wipe down teak, aluminum and metal furniture frames.

Check your garden hose to make sure it doesn’t have any holes and that your spray attachment is working properly.

If you keep it outside, consider buying either a hose hook or a reel that can

be mounted to the side of your home.

If you prefer to tuck it away in your garage or shed, invest in an outdoor hideaway box. It keeps the hose from getting tangled and is a nice compact way to

transport it in and out. Either way, it will look a lot better and keep the wrestling matches to a minimum.

Cooking with a dirty barbecue is not only unpleasant, but it’s also dangerous because built-up grease is the primary cause of grill fires. There are many convenient and effective grill cleaning services in the area that will remove harmful carcinogens, enhance the safety, and restore the appearance of your grill. If you maintain your grill properly, you will extend the life of your grill and as an added bonus your burgers and hot dogs will actually taste better!

Long Island summers mean frequent trips to the beach. Beach items can be cumbersome and messy with all that sand! Try to towel off chairs and umbrellas in the driveway before storing away.

Keep them on a bottom shelf or on hooks for an easy sweep and to prevent sand from migrating into other items. Box up seasonal decor like Christmas lights and Halloween goblins in labeled, covered containers and put those on a top shelf.

You don’t need easy access to something that you reach for once a year!

If you frequently host gatherings in your backyard that means significant garbage accumulation. To increase the life and decrease the smell of your garage garbage cans, buy thick black trash bags to house the trash in between sanitation pickups. That way if anything leaks, there’s an extra layer of protection.

BEACH DAY

CLEAN UP aunts to the beach are par for the course come summertime.

Thousands of people flock to the coasts of oceans and lakes to enjoy refreshing dips into the water and soak up some rays on the sand. But enjoyable days can turn somewhat aggravating if sand from the beach was not washed off prior to leaving the surf and sun behind.

Ensuring sand stays at the beach and isn’t tracked home may require a little patience, but it is possible to hit the beach without taking sand home. · Arrive prepared. Bring supplies to the beach that will make it easy to keep sand from finding its way into your car or home. A large trash bag, some extra towels that never hit the sand and some moist wipes to clean leftover sand off your arms and legs can help you leave the sand at the beach where it belongs.

Also, establish a time to leave the beach well in advance so everyone has time to clean up. · Reserve bags specifically for the beach. Reserve bags for the sole task of

transporting items to and from the beach so you are not adding to your collection of bags that have sand on them with each beach visit you make. These also can be used to store sandy kids’ toys. · Protect electronics and other sensitive items. Sand can damage phones, tablets and other electronics. Zip-top bags provide ample storage and can keep devices safe from sand that can be lodged in crevices or can scratch screens. · Clean sand off of clothes and chairs in the parking lot. Give clothes, beach chairs and other items exposed to sand a good shake or wipe-down in the parking lot before driving home. Give extra attention to sunblock-covered bodies.

Sprinkle some cornstarch or baby powder on your skin before toweling off, as doing so can help release any sand that’s stubbornly sticking to your skin. Do not forget to wipe off sandy feet as well. · Wrap up towels and sandy items.

Put anything used to wipe off sand into a garbage bag and make sure it is tied tightly. After shaking the items off in the parking lot, do so again in your yard before dropping them into the hamper. · Keep dry towels in the car. Even the most ardent cleaner may still track some sand along. Placing towels over the seats in the car will catch any errant sand.

Towels also protect the seats from damp swimsuits. · Do an extra cleaning at home. Hose down any chairs and items brought to the beach once you return home. This will dislodge any remaining sand and prevent it from being tracked inside.

well-tailored suit is in style all year long even though we reach for the more casual and relaxed options.

With so many options, dressing in suit this summer season is really not as difficult as you might think.

The old fashioned idea of not dressing in a suit in the summer because it’s too hot for dressier clothing is exactly that, old. There are so many options it’s almost impossible not to find a suit that works for you.

Look for breathable and lightweight fabrics that will provide more airflow and minimize heat. Cotton, linen, twill, seersucker, chambray are great choices when purchasing a suit.

The construction of the suit will also help determine the weight, texture and breath-abilty. Wearing a suit that fits your frame the right way means less fabric on your body.

Lighter colors reflect light and heat much better than darker colors, allowing you to keep cool the next few months. Although navy, charcoal gray and black suits make up the foundation of a man’s suit wardrobe, now is the perfect time to introduce color.

For modern color choices, go for light gray, and baby blue.

Try red, a trending color for summer suiting. Want something bolder? Floral and tropical prints will definitely set you apart this season.

What’s the best way to style yourself this season? For many, the thought of a button-down shirt with a tie, socks and dress shoes feels too much. For a more simple summer style, wear your new suit with a crisp t-shirt, no socks, loafers or even sneakers, Susse suggests. Of course a pair of light weight casual slacks and a sport jacket always works.

A summer suit can be easily accessorized. Bright socks and/ or a patterned tie will add some dimension to a light suit. If you are sporting a suit in a bold color or pattern, then it’s best to keep your accessories simple. Remember a pocket square is the perfect touch to complete the look.

Gazpacho is a refreshing summer favorite that is super easy to prepare but feels exotic. When shopping for your ingredients, be sure to take the time to look for the freshest vegetables since you aren’t using any heat to coax any flavor out of them. This chilled starter can be made so many different ways and the best part is you can prepare ahead of time so you’re out of the kitchen and back in the sun!

2 cups diced honeydew melon 1 English (seedless) cucumber, peeled and diced 1 small onion, diced 1 avocado - peeled, pitted, and chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped 1 clove garlic, chopped 1/4 cup white balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon lime juice Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Directions

Blend honeydew melon, cucumber, onion, avocado, jalapeno pepper, garlic, white balsamic vinegar, lime juice, salt, and black pepper in a blender until smooth.

Adjust seasonings if desired and chill before serving.

Process mangoes, orange juice and oil in a blender or food processor until pureed. Transfer to a medium bowl along with remaining ingredients. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Refrigerate until ready to serve. (Can be made several hours before serving.)

2 cucumbers, sliced 2 zucchini, sliced 1 small onion, roughly chopped 3/4 cup olive oil 1/2 cup torn basil leaves 1/3 cup lemon juice 1/4 cup heavy whipping cream Salt and ground black pepper to taste

Blend cucumbers, zucchini, onion, olive oil, basil leaves, and lemon juice together in a blender until smooth; add cream, salt, and pepper and pulse until smooth.

AN EFFECTIVE AND EASY WEIGHT LOSS PLAN FOR THE SUMMER

s you head into the summer months, you may not be happy with the way you look when you get into your swimsuit.

If so, what if there was a way where you didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to deprive yourself of some of your favorite summer foods and be able to lose weight at the same time? Intermittent fasting may be a diet that would be best for you this season.

Intermittent fasting is a lifestyle that is more about being disciplined with the timing of when you eat, rather than what you eat. This style of eating has been around for ages; intermittent fasting has ancient roots in many cultures, both with spiritual and healing indications, as well as being practiced by hunters and gatherers. It is a wonderful tool for weight loss and prevention when done the right way.

When you are in a semi-fasted state, your bodyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sensitivity to insulin and leptin (two hormones that aďŹ&#x20AC;ect fat storage) is altered, which helps encourage fat burning. In addition, HGH (human growth

hormone), another fat burning hormone, increases greatly and your metabolism can get a boost as a result. Studies show a possible correlation of improved gut ďŹ&#x201A;ora which may also improve metabolism.

According to a 2014 review, intermittent fasting can cause weight loss of 3-8% over 3-24 weeks, which is more than just regular daily calorie restriction alone, while also preserving lean muscle mass.

People on this diet report feeling more energized, eďŹ&#x192;cient, and focused. Intermittent fasting might just be the tool you need to lose weight or to encourage weight loss if you have plateaued.

Though there are many methods of intermittent fasting, the two most common ways are the 16:8 method or the 5:2 method.

The 16:8 method is the most popular and probably the easiest method. You eat within an eight hour period and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t eat again for 16 hours. For instance, you would start your ďŹ rst meal at 11am and stop by 7pm or start at 9am and stop by 5pm. You

may be thinking â&#x20AC;&#x153;16 hours with no food?

Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s torture!â&#x20AC;? Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fret too much about this! You will be sleeping during the majority of this 16-hour window.

The 5:2 method is an alternative method. This focuses on reducing the amount of calories your body has to digest for two days a week (like a mini-fast) but eating a normal calorie-healthy diet for the other ďŹ ve days. Your dietician and doctor can help you ďŹ gure out what is best for you, but typically this is approximately 500 calories for women and 600 calories for men on fasting days.

With either method, you are not depriving yourself of nutrition. Depending on which style of intermittent fasting is best for you, you arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily cutting your calories. Quite simply, the goal is to keep your meals in a certain window of time.

However, this doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t negate the responsibility of eating healthy foods and certainly doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t mean binge eating during your consumption window!

Before you start any intermittent fast-

ing, you should consult with your registered dietician and/or physician to determine if intermittent fasting is safe for you.

There are a number of health conditions and circumstances where fasting is not advised. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you have diabetes or hypoglycemia, or if you need to take medications at certain times with meals, this type of diet is not recommended. Fasting may also be contraindicated for younger, growing children.

If you prefer breakfast, then 2 eggs scrambled with 1 cup of spinach and half an avocado may be a good choice.

Try to fast about 4 hours until your next meal.

This would bring you to about 3pm.

Have a mini-meal or snack, or if you prefer, have one of the above meals. Some snack suggestions include plain Greek yogurt with berries, a protein shake or 1 piece of fresh fruit with 15 nuts.

Have your dinner meal by 7pm.

Protein plus a carbohydrate with a vegetable works well to help you sleep and to hold you over until the following late morning meal. Examples of this combination of food could be: 6-8 oz. of fish with ½ yam, 1 cup veggies, or 4-6 oz. of chicken with ½ cup brown rice and a salad. A vegan option is ½ cup of beans with ½ cup quinoa and a side salad with avocado.

e get it: summer reading assignments are almost always awful.

Even if it’s a book students are otherwise interested in reading, being told that they have to read it sucks all the fun out of it.

If they have a choice on what to read, have them give it some real thought.

A lot of teachers give students a list of books to choose from. Students should look at summaries for each book and choose one that is at least a little bit interesting to them. Nothing makes a reading assignment more boring than having to read something that the reader finds to be mind-numbingly dull. They should NOT just pick the shortest book.

It may have fewer pages, but that doesn’t mean it’ll hold their attention or that it’s an easy read.

It’s probably a safe bet that a lot of the other students haven’t gotten their summer reading out of the way either. Mis-

ery loves company, so have your child start an impromptu book club. Students can slog through the reading together AND get a deeper understanding of the material through discussion.

Cleanse the palate Once students have finished slogging through their assigned reading, they should remind themselves that reading is actually an enjoyable activity by reading something they think is fun.

Whether that means rereading Harry Potter or tackling some hefty nonfiction doesn’t matter – what matters is that they read.

We won’t bore you with a litany of statistics demonstrating the importance of strong literacy skills, both in the classroom and in the workplace. We’ll just say this: reading is probably the most fundamental skill that a student can build to ensure future success.

Make a plan For starters, students should leave enough time to reasonably read the book without having to stay up all night before the first day of school. If they read 300 pages in one night, they’re not going to remember any of it. They should figure out how many pages or chapters they need to read each day, and set aside time every day to do nothing but read those pages or chapters.
