What is Catholic Schools Week? Catholic Schools Week Celebrates the Rich Tradition of Catholic Education Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January, which in 2018 is January 28th, and runs through February 3th. The theme for the Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. On Long Island, Catholic Elementary Schools celebrate the week with Masses and open houses to thank parishioners, to welcome visitors and to introduce new families to the benefits of a Catholic education. These frequently kick off with a Mass and open house on the first Sunday (the 28th), and a series of events designed to recognize the contributions of students, parents and faculty during the course of the week. education. As a school family, how do I participate? Each school publishes a complete list of events and activities taking place in their school during the week. School families are encouraged to visit the web site of their school. As a family considering a Catholic education, how do I learn more? Catholic Schools Week features Open Houses at the schools where parents and students can visit the school(s) they think they might be interested in and get a tour of the facility, be introduced to the teachers, meet
Is there a difference in tuition to attend a different school? Long Island’s Catholic Elementary schools set their own tuitions, so they vary slightly, but there is no penalty for choosing a school outside of your Parish or town if you are a Parishioner in the Diocese. The system of schools is an asset here on Long Island for all of the families of the Diocese and for all of the families of Long Island. Are non-Catholics welcome in the schools? The schools are welcoming places to everyone without regard to race, religion or national origin. A religion class is a requirement, students participate in Liturgies, and faith is an integrated part of daily activities, but many schools have a significant population of students who attend because of the quality of the education alone.

Notre Dame School is a Catholic elementary school with students from Nursery to Grade 8. We follow the NYS curriculum in grades PK through 8. Notre Dame School is accredited by AdvancED. Here are some things we would like you to know about Notre Dame School: FAITH: We pray together each morning as a school community and attend Mass on the First Friday of each month and celebrate liturgical seasons in a variety of ways. During the seasons of Advent and Lent, we begin our week with a special prayer service. TECHNOLOGY: Our building has wireless connectivity and all students in Grade 5 through Grade 8 have Chrome books. All students in Grade 4 have iPads. There are also iPads available for students in the lower grades. Our students are proficient in most aspects of Microsoft Office. They use a variety of presentation tools including PowerPoint and Prezi, along with Movie Maker. They build boats, hot air balloons and robotic arms and work with the Cad Pro program to design a better school environment. Our newest initiative for Pre-kGrade 6 involves the integration of STEM based units. All students from PK through Grade 8 work on computers and SmartBoards.
SPECIAL CONTENT: Our Art teacher includes different artists, cultures and literature into her classes. Our Physical Education teacher plays all kinds of games, teaches important skills, teaches Health to grades Five through Eight and stresses good sportsmanship. At Notre Dame we create a rich, powerful connection between students and reading by inviting authors to our school. We have 3 book fairs a year. These are family events that support the reading development of children. Students in grades Kindergarten through Grade Five participate in the Christmas and Spring Show. Students in PK-Grade 2 participate in a winter concert. Students in grades One through Eight may enjoy music lessons and Honor
Band through Paul Effman. In music class, students learn to play the recorder and xylophone, and sing at School Masses. We also have a school choir who sing at prayer services and school masses. Our students enjoy a lunch program that features both hot and cold items, along with snacks and drinks. Students in Kindergarten through Grade 8 enjoy the annual Notre Dame Picnic, compete at Blue and White events, participate in Liturgies all through the year as Leaders of Song, readers, and altar servers, go on curriculum –related field trips, shop at the Christmas and Spring Boutique and love dress-down days! We have a full time Art teacher, as well as a full time Technology teacher, Physical Education teacher and librarian. Our
Spanish and Music teachers are part-time. Grades K and 1 have Italian classes during the school day and students in Grade 2 may participate after school. Students in grades 38 study Spanish. We also have a Drama Club for Grades 4-8 that produces an annual theatrical performance. We offer a variety of Enrichment Programs after school during the Spring and Fall, including Chess Club. Morning-Care is available for those students in Nursery and PK, and aftercare is available until 6:00PM from students in PK through Grade 8. We are proud to announce that we have 100% acceptance into Catholic High Schools. Last year our eighth grade students were awarded more than $715,000.00 in scholarships!
