You might feel like taking a deep breath as you look to the new year.

There are still some obstacles to overcome – the so-called stimulus cliff for one, as we see what happens when the training wheels are taken off the economy with the hope it will keep rolling steadily on.

But the anticipated arrival of vaccines in the new year may help us return to something approximating normality.

Despite the problems of 2020, the industry is doing well overall.

Chemical sales are high as homeowners are using their pools more, and people without a pool or spa are keen to get one – filling up order books across the country. The Cordell DA data shows Queensland and Western Australia are doing particularly well.

Although we should avoid getting too cocky, we do have a right to be hopeful that 2021 will be a good year for the industry. With any luck it will be a better year for the country and the world as well.

One event that was delayed was the SPLASH! Pool & Spa Trade Show – the usually biannual event when the whole industry comes together. By the time it comes about next August, it will have been three years since everyone met up to show their wares, network and socialise. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so they say, and I have the feeling the 2021 show will be a cracker.

I wish you all a wonderful Christmas and New Year and hope the easing of restrictions remains so we can see family and friends wherever they are around the country, and share much needed good times together.

New pool and spa consumer show to be held at Melbourne Showgrounds SPASA Australia has launched a new pool and spa consumer show – the Pool & Spa Outdoor Living Sale – to be held at the Melbourne Showgrounds on July 24 and 25, 2021.

CEO Lindsay McGrath says the new show fits with SPASA Australia’s objectives of continuing to promote and grow the pool industry, and that the decision was based on industry and member feedback that they needed to deliver an expo in Victoria for the growing membership base.

“We saw the opportunity in moving from a city location to the showgrounds,” he says.

“We know consumers who want to purchase a pool or spa see

this style of expo as a destination, with a variety of transport options including car parking space.”

Located just seven kilometres from Melbourne CBD and 15 minutes from Melbourne Airport, Melbourne Showgrounds is easily accessible by car and public transport including bus, tram and train.

“This model worked very well when we moved the Sydney show to Rosehill Gardens – as do the other pool and spa consumer expos held at showgrounds including the shows in New Zealand, South Australia, Western Australia and Queensland.”

He says that the added value is that the saving on site costs

He adds that the following summer should also be exciting as they have big plans for a summer event in 2022.

Swimming pools push The Block profits to new heights

Rear garden of The Block contestants Sarah and George Highly popular TV show, The Block, gave their contestants a tough challenge in 2020 – to renovate period homes in Brighton Victoria within the decade of their original construction, before moving onto the new section of the property.

All five homes included stunning swimming pools built

by Franklin Pools Australia, and Sunbather installed their Downunder roller and 4mm

thermal pool covers on all five pools. Reece and Maytronics also contributed to the pool projects.

Sunbather says their aesthetically pleasing, quality Downunder roller was the perfect fit for the beautifully designed yards that surround the pools.

Working closely with Franklin, the installations proceeded smoothly and left the new owners with a pool cover system that is out of sight and out of the way.

The Block 2020 recently aired its final episode, with all five houses selling at auction. Harry and Tash, Sarah and George, Daniel and Jade, Luke and Jasmin, and Jimmy and Tam all made a profit after transforming five period houses into stunning family homes over 12 weeks. All five homes sold above reserve, giving every team a fantastic result.

Battlers, walked away from auction day with the largest prize money in the show’s history: they made $966,000 in profit plus the $100,000 prize money for earning the highest profit at auction. That means they are instant millionaires, with a total of $1,066,000.

The available annual DA figures to October from Cordell show relevant applications up by 13 per cent nationally, with Queensland up by 51 per cent, New South Wales up by 12 per cent, Western Australia by four per cent and South Australia by three per cent. Victorian was down by 11 per cent.

Over the three months of August-October, the DA numbers show great improvement, indicating this trend could continue into the new year. Cordell data for the three months shows an increase of 69 per cent. While all states were up compared with the corresponding quarter last year, the numbers were particularly high for Queensland (up by 255 per cent) and Western Australia (up by 212 per cent), while New South Wales was up by 39 per cent, and South Australia and Victoria up by 14 per cent each.

Pools of any type capable of holding more than 300mm should be appropriately fenced – in most parts of Australia this is a requirement.

Additionally, supervision warnings that apply to larger swimming pool and spas also apply to portable pools.

Nicole Rich, director of Consumer Affairs Victoria, says that it is timely to warn about the drowning risk associated with portable pools as the weather warms up and Christmas approaches.

“We have again partnered with Royal Life Saving to run ‘Don’t Duck Out, Make It Safe’, to educate consumers of the responsibilities you take on when you buy a portable pool, which may include putting up a safety barrier,” she says.

Royal Life Saving Society Australia national manager for research and policy, Alison Mahony, says the latest drowning report highlights the issue of portable pool drowning and who is most at risk.

While these figures give an indication of the way the market is trending, they are not comprehensive and don’t include all pools built or even all DAs lodged. By some estimates, the total national numbers including all types of pools could be almost double these figures. They do not include pool projects that are approved as part of a new home, smaller projects under the cost threshold, renovations that don’t require a DA, or some aboveground pools. Additionally, not all councils are forthcoming with data or report on time; councils in some states such as Queensland and Victoria are particularly reluctant. In Brief In a further consolidation of pool and spa industry associations around the globe, the California Pool and Spa Association (CPSA) board of directors voted to affiliate with the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA). The PHTA is the peak industry body in the United States, being an amalgamation of the National Swimming Pool Foundation (NSPF) and the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals (APSP).

The NSPF had previously merged with residential design and training body, Genesis. The CPSA had been one of the largest regional pool and spa industry bodies in the US. Meanwhile, the PHTA has launched its first official strategic plan, outlining its core purpose, mission statement, core values, pillars and more.

Poolwerx is in the process of opening 11 new stores.

The business has acquired five independent pool servicing stores under its banner in Baulkham Hills in New South Wales, Kings Park and Hampstead Gardens in South Australia and another two due to open on New Zealand’s North Island.

Further retail locations have opened or are set to open in the coming months in Jimboomba and Moggill, Queensland; Victoria Park, Western Australia; and Mosman, Kenthurst and Port Stephens, New South Wales.

Former AFL player Nick Stevens will face a committal hearing in February, after being charged over allegations of duping people through a swimming pool scam in Mildura, Victoria. He is facing seven charges including five of dishonestly obtaining financial advantage.

Swimply booms amid “daycation” trend Bunim Laskin is the 23-year-old New Yorker who founded and runs Swimply, the AirBnB style service for the renting of residential swimming pools.

Laskin says that amid covid, the summer online marketplace for pool sharing saw an incredible 4000 per cent growth in the USA and he predicts Australia will follow suit.

He says that daycations – like staycations only you explore your local area – are predicted to boom over this summer as Australians get ready to explore their own backyard – or someone else’s.

Swimply launched its platform

and app in Australia last year with more than 400 pools listed across the country, connecting those looking for a place to swim with people who want to make money by renting out their pool from between $15 and $100 per hour.

“In the US, we saw a huge spike in demand for private pool experiences over the summer months as a safe and fun option for those seeking relief from the heat. Given Australians’ love for the water, we’re expecting it to be just as busy,” says Laskin.

In a statement SPASA Australia says it supports more people swimming in pools and

Callum Ross appointed GM of Boss Solar Callum Ross, general manager, Boss Solar

The Boss Polymer Technology Group has appointed Callum Ross as general manager of its Boss Solar division.

Ross is well known to the industry, having been operations manager of AstralPool Australia for a number of years, as well as more recently being operations manager at Supreme Heating.

Ross says he has always had a passion for the swimming pool

industry, and has long believed in the importance of solar pool heating.

“A heated pool is a used pool, and a used pool is a referred pool, contributing to the overall growth of the industry,” he says.

The appointment comes in anticipation of an exciting 12 months for Boss Solar, and Ross says they will be launching an exciting range of innovative additions to their extensive solar offering to the market.

Water Heroes spread good messages Swimart marketing manager Nathan Hallahan says that given drowning is a one of the leading causes of unintentional death for Australian children, pool safety is a critical issue for families and communities.

Are hidden bugs chewing up your chlorine?

A sudden increase in chlorine demand in pools and spas may indicate a build-up of biofilm in the pipework.

Biofilm is a layer of grease and oils that becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. It forms a lining on the pipework and equipment releasing bacteria into the water which is then chewed up by the chlorine.

Unfortunately, chlorine or bromine will not remove biofilm.

The only method of effectively removing biofilm from the internals of pools and spas is by treating it with either chlorine dioxide or enzymes.

Chlorine dioxide is by far the most effective method as it kills the bacteria while also removing the biofilm.

Chlorine dioxide tablets are both safe and easy to use. Simply calculate the volume of pool or spa water and dose according to instructions.

Regular use about every two to three months will also prevent any further build-up of biofilm, leaving the water crystal clear and safe to swim in. Tablets are available from most professional pool shops or local serviceman.

SPASA appoints NSW BDM SPASA Australia has appointed Michael Brennan as its business development executive for the New South Wales and Australian Capital Territory regions. He will be based in North Parramatta.

Brennan has more than 20 years sales and management experience in the swimming pool industry and the plumbing market, including working with AstralPool, Insnrg and Compass Pools Sydney.

“Michael hit the ground running, utilising his wealth of experience to better serve our members on the ground in New South Wales and the ACT,” says Luke Daly, SPASA sales and marketing manager. “The addition of Michael has happened at the

perfect time, as SPASA Australia continues to invest in the pool and spa industry through increasing our offerings to members.”

Brennan started in the industry in 2009 as a sales representative for AstralPool, having worked for the previous 17 years in residential and commercial plumbing.

“Up to that point my only experience with pools was swimming in them,” he says. Then Peter Wallace offered him the chance to become a NSW trade representative for AstralPool.

“I was a rep mainly for builders covering an area north of the M4 up to Port Macquarie. Then I became the branch manager at Seven Hills, which became a trade centre in about 2014 – that was a

great concept, I loved it.”

He left in 2017 to work with Russell Fagan of Compass Pools Sydney, selling and commissioning pools.

“That went well, I enjoyed that for three years,” he says.

“Then Peter gave me a call again and got me back to work with him in Insnrg – there were a few other ex-AstralPool people working there too. I was doing sales and servicing from January this year, and then Luke called me in early September and I took up this opportunity with SPASA.” His role is to grow the membership base and interact with existing member and suppliers.

Clark upskills staff amid sales surge With Australian families staying home and staycationing this summer, Clark Rubber has launched an initiative to help ensure the safety of backyard swimming pools across the country.

Advocacy to protect and grow the industry In a year of restrictions and challenges, Lindsay McGrath CEO of SPASA Australia reflects on the year and the impact it has had on the peak industry body and how it has supported members.

T

his year, I feel that we would all like to stop hearing how it has been a challenge. Words like “pivot” and “unpresented” have been used so often the meaning is becoming lost.

What has not changed is the ongoing growth of the pool and spa industry. Backyards are full of people during this challenging time and our industry continues to add value and promote health and happiness through pool and spa ownership.

2020 saw advocacy and lobbying as a necessity to keep doors open and vans moving where possible across Australia and New Zealand. Chief health officers and politicians such as the Honourable Greg Hunt MP acknowledged the importance of healthy and sanitised backyards.

The pandemic has highlighted the critical importance of our government-association relationships and the need to continually improve and develop them.

The lockdowns did not stop the advancement into protecting and promoting the industry through multiple Australian and New Zealand standards. This year saw SPASA representation on more than 20 standards review committees, as well as supporting many federal and state reviews, and technical and strategic committees. Key standards such as pumps, heating, fencing and energy will all have an impact on how Australian and New Zealand homeowners view water and energy in the future.

Climate Care Certified has been embraced by multiple suppliers, builders and manufacturers in promoting the innovative sustainable options our industry continues to develop.

Water and energy authorities are listening to the association and

we are working with them to ensure pools and spas are seen in a positive and essential light.

Consumers are searching for best practice advice and expect answers almost instantly. One of SPASA’s latest partners and member services, Podium, has helped the association speed up our interaction with the public.

With thousands of regular consumers seeking SPASA’s advice, this tool has reduced our phone call volume by directing them to chat box texting services. This partnership, like many others, has become invaluable in saving time and reducing cost to our members. This latest member service adds to the already available options to reduce costs, improve customer service, increase positive reviews, save on vehicle expenses and protect through the right insurance.

More than half a million dollars has been invested in education and training this year. The launch of the Institute of Research and Learning (IRLearning), formally known as SPASA Training, has provided multiple trade qualifications and certification pathways, providing increased opportunities for students to expand their businesses.

Business centre webinars were provided free to all industry bodies for 12 weeks during the first covid-19 lockdown. More than 100 previous graduates have used this year to upgrade or add another trade qualification to one they had completed with SPASA in the previous years. This is a great testament to our IRLearning team who keep adapting our offerings based on student feedback.

Expos and media

Social distancing meant that promotions were reduced – and unfortunately some state’s Pool & Spa Outdoor Living Expos did not go ahead. For the same reason, the Awards of Excellence program went online with virtual awards ceremonies.

However, the pool and spa community reached more prospective buyers this year than any prior year.

Unfortunately, the SPLASH! trade expo was postponed until 15th of August 2021. Although that was a disappointment, there were also positives in the communication landscape. The merger of the Pool + Spa Review brand purchased in 2019 saw SPLASH! magazine double its distribution and social and digital impacts, creating more than a million digital impressions for our brands. This enhancement to the SPLASH! brand has come directly from members and their

Improving concrete spas’ comfort, efficiency, utility – and profit

A concrete spa is often less comfortable than its acrylic standalone competitor

T

he common concrete pool/spa combination has been worrying me lately. A concrete spa is often less comfortable than its acrylic standalone competitor and can be less effective and more costly to operate.

But who cares really cares when: 1. They look so much better built in the same style and materials as the adjacent pool.

Yes, by using the same style and materials as the pool, the spa seemingly integrates with the pool and appears like it really belongs there.

2. They are an easy sell.

However, if they provide less comfort, less features, less options, and don’t perform as well as their plastic competitors, they should be cheaper.

But often: 3. They have difficulty retaining their temperature.

Too many of these spas are designed to skim by overflowing into the pool when in operating mode. The water is then replenished with cooler water from the pool.

4. They take too long, are too costly and still can’t heat the water to 36 degrees.

By the time most spas heat up to 34 degrees to 38 degrees, people have found something else to do. I have seen a spa that could not heat above 30 degrees after burning up gas for eight hours. I have seen a spa fitted with a small electric heater that made the water lukewarm after six hours.

5. They too often have poor plumbing.

Many are plumbed to draw water for the spa heater from the pool. Why? Because AS2610 Clause 2.11 only requires that a spa to have a “surface skimming system”.

The reason for this is that the “gunk” that

comes out of the skin can be considerable with four or more bathers, and it should be removed via the filtration system, not float into the pool.

6. They have the same chemical system and levels as does the pool.

Because of the high bathing load relative to water volume, a hot spa should be fitted with a chemical treatment system that enables it to operate with higher sanitation levels than is generally necessary for a pool.

Most cannot automatically do that.

Who cares? I care and you should too!

How to do it right

A good pool/spa combo should address all of the above issues.

It should: • Cost much more than it currently does; • Be hydraulically and chemically separated from the pool; • Have its own skimmer box and filtration system; and • Be capable of heating to usable temperature within one hour.

To do all this, your spa will need: • A separate plumbing system from that of the pool; • A skimmer box; • Its own filter, (minimum 100 square-foot, preferably 200 square-foot); • Its own adjustable chemical control system; • A small circulating pump; • A larger pump for the spa jets – (approximately 200 kW per jet); • Its own time clock; • Its own water leveller; • A variable speed pump to operate at very low speed when not in use and at high speed when operating the jets;

• A 400 megajoule gas heater to heat it up in 30 minutes (waiting hours is not an option); • Have an overflow into the pool so it can go somewhere when too many bathers displace the water. Minor plumbing changes can also make this a water feature when the spa is not being used.

• Explore the options for spa jets. Some of the array of acrylic spa jets are available and adaptable for concrete spas Result?

A high selling price – and more profit!

Throughout my 30 years of pool building, I’m sure I’ve built at least 100 of these spas.

I can’t recall ever losing one on the basis of cost. When you explain the reasons for all this extra equipment, your clients will appreciate it, and most will happily pay the extra for a more usable and trouble-free spa.

n terms of swimming pools alone – lap pools to ocean pools, harbour pools to natural bush pool and waterfalls (without even mentioning beaches, rivers and coves), Sydney is one of the best cities in the world for swimming. Some of these locations include where the Australian crawl was supposedly first demonstrated and where Olympic champions have trained since they were nippers.

Places We Swim Sydney covers the very best of the city’s famous and hidden swimming spots.

After the success of their first book, Places We Swim authors Caroline Clements and Dillon Seitchik-Reardon followed up with a deep dive into Sydney in this ultimate city guide to the aqueous outdoors.

With destinations ranging from neighbourhood city pools to gorges that feel like the outback, Places We Swim Sydney is a celebration of not just these magnificent swimming locations, but of the diverse landscapes and water-loving communities that make up Sydney.

In their first book, Clements and Seitchik-Reardon had a goal – to discover Australia’s best places to swim. But in many ways it was an informal search for their next place to live. Sydney is an active, energetic, optimistic and water-loving city. It is now their home and the subject of their second book.

The Australia-wide book only included a handful of places to swim in Sydney, so this new book features mostly fresh content.

Clements is a writer and content producer and was the founding editor of Broadsheet.

She has produced cookbooks and produce guides in Melbourne and Sydney. Seitchik-Reardon is an environmental scientist and photographer and has co-written gardening books for the Little Veggie Patch Co. Together they have written and photographed all entries in the book with contributions from Benjamin Law, Aquabumps, Giovanni Pilu, Remy Gerega, Hetty McKinnon, Jane de Graaff, Helena Dolby, Luisa Brimble and Nikki To.

Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Pool, Woolloomooloo

A seasonal swimming retreat nestled between The Royal Botanic Garden and Woolloomooloo Wharf.

Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton Pool (ABC) is our go-to place for an inner city swim. ABC is where we have ‘business meetings’ with our office-worker friends and colleagues. It’s an island of calm, heated to 25°C, overlooking the Woolloomooloo Wharf and nestled into the furthest corner of The Royal Botanic Garden. Immersed among Moreton Bay fig trees and towering palms, with a soundtrack of tropical birds, it is hard to imagine that you are in the middle of Australia’s largest city.

And yet, where else but in Sydney could a pool like this ever exist?

Woolloomooloo Bay has had almost as many swimming facilities over the years as it has ‘Os’ in its name. However, this site didn’t December 2020/January 2021 SPLASH! 27

really take off until 1901, when Sydney diverted its sewerage system from the Harbour to Bondi. Originally called Domain Baths, ABC was renamed in honour of, you guessed it, Andrew ‘Boy’ Charlton in 1968. Charlton was Sydney’s homegrown Olympic champion (see Local knowledge), who famously challenged and beat the world’s top swimmer, Arne Borg, in this very pool.

Recent modifications have given a modern adaptation to this iconic site. Entering the 50-metre pool via the perforated deck feels like boarding a ship. To the left is the Poolside Cafe, where floor-to-ceiling windows and an open-air terrace overlook the lap lanes. Down the stairs we find the city’s finest change rooms; admittedly, there is little competition. Filtered-light floods through the building’s metallic brise-soleil, giving the rooms an open and airy atmosphere. Rather than scurrying in and out, holding our breath, we are almost tempted to linger on the wooden seats. Almost. After all, they are still change rooms.

These days, the most competitive event at the pool is sunbaking atop the lounge chairs.

They are hot property, with uncompromised views of the naval fleet at the wharf behind.

The eight lanes of heated saltwater fill up with pre- and post-work crowds, plus a little bump in numbers around lunchtime. But most of the day it is just us freelancers cutting slow laps between the cafe and pool.

cram into this pocketsized 10-seater-cafe for scones piled with jam and cream or a slice of date and almond cake with caramel – it’s perfect with a cup of breakfast tea.

Continental Bar & Deli 167 Phillip St, Sydney This European-style bistro is open for lunch and dinner during the week, so you’ll be competing with a city crowd after your swim – or maybe you’re part of it. The bar is where you want to be, drinking a Mart-tinnie (a martini that comes in a can) and eating tinned fish, like sardines and mackerel. If you can’t tell, canned things are a highlight here.

Round it out with some cheese, olives and crusty bread (not from a can).

The Apollo Restaurant 44 Macleay St, Potts Point The Apollo is located a 20-minute-walk from the pool, but it’s also one of our favourite Sydney restaurants. Its wood-fired Greek food is designed to share, such as tentacles of octopus and shoulders of lamb, but it’s for some of the simple dishes, like grilled saganaki with honey or the taramasalata, that we keep going back. he recent trend has been that summers have been getting warmer while at the same time some people are feeling less safe on our local beaches – leading more and more Australian families to turn to their own backyard swimming pool for rest and exercise.

In 2020 covid accelerated that trend dramatically and people became keener than ever to stay at home – and in many cases, they weren’t even able to travel for the summer holidays and relaxation.

This has led to more families looking for ways to make the most of their holidays at home. Some are even taking tips from commercial and public swimming pools to look for ways to keep their children happily occupied and enhance the overall experience.

New aquatic toy standard

An updated mandatory safety standard for aquatic toys was released in June 2020 which will better help protect children using inflatable aquatic toys in and around water.

Children, in particular young children who often cannot swim, are at risk of drowning if their inflatable aquatic toy suddenly deflates when air is released through the air inlet. The hazard increases if children use an aquatic toy unsupervised or rely on it as if it were a flotation aid or other life-saving device.

“The updated consumer standard maintains consumer protections and is an important reminder that parents and carers should only purchase safe, approved products that meet the requirements of the mandatory standard,” ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard says.

Suppliers can now comply with either the latest Australian voluntary standard or the trusted overseas ISO standard.

This will save Australian businesses $1 million per annum through greater access to global markets and reduced compliance costs.

The updated standard also means greater choice and lower prices for consumers, helping the family budget.

Key requirements of the ACCC’s mandatory standard include: • Aquatic toys must carry a warning statement.

• Advertising material shall not state or imply that a child will be safe if left unsupervised with such a toy.

• Design and performance requirements for air inlets of inflatable aquatic toys.

“Under the Australian Consumer Law all suppliers must comply with the mandatory standard to protect children from injury or risk fines and penalties,” Rickard says.

The ACCC’s mandatory standard applies to aquatic toys that are designed: • To bear the mass of a child under the age of 14.

Whitewater West Australia managing director James Corbett says diversity is key when purchasing pool toys and aquatic equipment.

“Variety is the best way to grab children’s attention and keep them entertained,” he says. “This is accomplished by determining the age ranges of the children who will likely be using the various elements.”

For example, in commercial facilities, spraypark areas are divided into zones grouped into age ranges: 0-2 years, 2-5 years, 6-9 years, and 10-13 years.

Spectacular, intricate and unique: the 2020 Pool of the Year

T

he 2020 National Pool of the Year is a stunning, premium-finished pool and spa built by Laguna Pools & Spas and designed by Liquid Amber Garden Design.

Matt Scrase from Liquid Amber was commissioned to design the landscaping and pool for the Balwyn North backyard, following his work designing the garden at the front of the property.

“The back garden had essentially been left as a blank canvas after an extensive home renovation several years earlier, with a mind to complete a landscape project when the time was right,” says Scrase.

It was important to the clients that the project had its own stamp and be unique – they didn’t want to see similar projects appearing in the design magazines. Additionally, they wanted the design to be visually unimpeded by a pool fence.

“There was the need to move away from a traditional pool barrier as they wanted the new pool and landscape to fully integrate with the renovated home,” says Scrase. “This then allowed me to explore the eight-metre long curved negative edge wall, dressed in a specifically blended range of Bizassa glass mosaic tiles.

“Since we in the state of Victoria have a limited pool season due to the climate, the client was also insistent that the pool area looks great all year round – and with a carefully laid out lighting design, the pool and spa itself would always take centre stage.”

An intricate build

Doing their due diligence, the clients sourced a number of quotes from registered pool builders including Melbourne-based Laguna

Pools & Spas. Laguna’s attention to detail and their willingness to accept the challenges landed them the project.

“Not only was the shape and layout of this pool and spa combination unique, but access to the site was via a fully landscaped front yard and a restrictive side access way,” says Scrase.

“Laguna dealt with all these varied issues with aplomb and put forward the best trades to complete this challenging pool build to the highest specification.”

Laguna general manager Dallas Roberts says the pool was a spectacular and quite intricate design, and the clients were very particular.

“They had high quality expectations and wanted it to be unique – which is certainly is,” he says.

combined pool, spa and deck took up every available centimetre.

“It’s a large pool, ten metres by six, with a total volume of approximately 80,000 litres,” he says. “For a pool build of this specific and intricate design, the hydraulic function is paramount.

A concealed balance tank, fed through letterbox openings in the feature pit and equipped with overflow ensures the volume of water is managed carefully and the function of the pool is maintained.”

Due to the tight site and restrictive access, Laguna needed to use smaller hand machinery and take extra care around the landscaping, which was completed at the front and still being built at the rear, simultaneous with the pool build.

“There was a lot going on,” he says. “And the clients were very keen to get everything done by Christmas for a big family party.”

The clients have older children at university, and wanted a pool they could relax in when they were home, as well as entertain around the pool and spa with their friends. When the weather was too cold to swim, it would be a year-round visual feature.

“When in normal filtering mode the wet edge becomes a cascading feature, and when lit it looks amazing.

“The opportunity to bring this unique and challenging design to life was one of immense satisfaction. The clients’ desire for something special was realised through a deep collaboration between design intent and a commitment to executing the finest of details.”

Roberts says the designer challenged them to provide something different – and the result speaks for itself.

“From the custom blend glass Bisazza tiles to the complementing curves, colours and varying layers, the pool and spa offers the clients resort-style relaxation and useability, while providing a luxurious and eye popping feature that is sure to wow anyone who experiences it,” he says.

L

orenzo Peressin’s life in the pool industry began straight out from school, working in his father’s pool business before setting up his own company 20 years ago.

In addition to Peressin and his fellow director, Sarah Martin, there are five employees. Urban Oasis Pools is a close-knit team with years of experience which is matched by great enthusiasm – resulting in an impressive number of awards.

Peressin says they do a lot of work for builders, developers and people who have great ideas and visions of what they want.

“We don’t go in and tell them what they ought to have. We listen first,” he says.

“Then, as a company, we invest our time with them,

to give them what they want. We’ve had a lot of experience in the pool industry. We can draw on that experience and then make it work for the client.”

A complex challenge

Peressin says the project that gained the high commendation for the Pool of the Year was a very complex challenge.

Geoffrey Baddams, who was the project coordinator, agrees wholeheartedly with his boss.

“Yes, there were a few things special about this construction,” he says. “The pool is located at Beaumont in the foothills. It’s quite a steep site – it’s a hillside. Not only that, the pool is built up on a deck on the second floor of a house. That certainly added to the design challenge and, because it’s elevated, its actual construction was quite a challenge too.

“You know, if you’re building a pool on the ground, the precision is less crucial. Where there is a pre-existing structure, then it becomes more difficult.”

Like most businesses, Urban Oasis has been affected by the covid crisis. In the beginning, Peressin was worried – for a couple of months they kept busy finishing off existing contracts, but there were no new jobs coming in. Now he thinks that they are getting back to normal, and there is a lot of interest.

“People aren’t travelling this year,” he says, “so they have extra income and the pool they have been wanting is suddenly possible. The spring season is starting well.”

Peressin appreciates the role that SPASA plays within the industry, finding it particularly useful for the sharing of information within the pool industry all around Australia. He also appreciates having access to documentation contracts in regard to pool finishes and warranty issues.

“It’s not something that happens often, but if we do have an issue, whatever it might be, with a client or contractually, we’ve got someone we can actually refer to, and then get good information.”

Urban Oasis is run with great competence and enthusiasm by Peressin and Martin. Geoffrey Baddams, who has only been employed by the company for a couple of years, outlines why he likes working at the company.

“The number one reason,” he says, “is that Lorenzo and Sarah make sure that we have spent a good amount of time thinking about the initial design and finding out exactly what the client wants before we start. It’s easy to make changes on paper – not so easy to make changes in concrete.

“The second is patience. That way you make less mistakes. Looking forward is important too, as is managing the steps in the process with all the stakeholders. It all comes down to communication and respect for everyone involved in the process.” n

Legendary swim coach Don Talbot passes away Inaugural Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) director and swimming coach legend, Don Talbot passed away in November.

AIS CEO Peter Conde says that Talbot put athletes and coaches at the forefront, setting the groundwork to re-establish Australia as a sporting strength in the world.

“A world-class swim coach in his own right, Don personally recruited the coaches to lead eight foundation sports at the AIS and 152 inaugural scholarship athletes,” says Conde.

“Now the AIS has facilities and connections around the country, it is part of a National Institute Network that supports more than 2200 athletes. We have the utmost respect for what Don achieved in our history, but we also acknowledge the influence his work still has on inspiring our future.”

Conde says when AIS celebrates its 40th anniversary in January 2021 it will be with great sadness, as Talbot won’t be there.

Champion coach Don Talbot was one of Australia’s greatest swim coaches, inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1979. He began his career coaching siblings John and Ilsa Konrads in the 1950s, guiding them both to set world records in the 400, 800 and 1500m freestyle events.

In the lead up to the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games, Talbot was named the head of the Australian men’s team, leading the likes of Ian O’Brien, Bob Windle, Beverley Whitfield and Gail Neall to Olympic gold medal success. He held the position from 1964 to 1972, combining for 14 medals over the three Olympic cycles.

After a short stint coaching overseas in Canada, he returned to Australia to take up the position of inaugural AIS Director in 1981. The AIS provided the opportunity for elite Australian coaches to be employed for the first time, and Talbot set out to appoint the best coaches he could find.

After three years at the AIS, and another stint coaching overseas, he returned to swimming as head coach of the Australian National Swim Team in 1989. His no-nonsense style led Australia back to the top of world swimming with strong results at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and overtaking swimming powerhouse USA to top the gold medal tally at the 2001 World Swimming Championships.

Perkins elected Swimming Australia president Kieran Perkins, two-time Olympic gold medallist, has been elected by the board as president of Swimming Australia.

Considered to be one of Australia’s greatest distance swimmers – winning gold in the 1500m at the 1992 and 1996 Olympics – Perkins broke numerous world records in his career and was the first person in history to hold the Olympic, World, Commonwealth and Pan Pacific titles simultaneously.

He retired from swimming in 2000 having amassed 23 medals at international competitions and was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2002. He takes over the role that was left vacant by former president John Bertrand following the Swimming Australia AGM last week.

Ardent fined $3.6m over Dreamworld deaths After pleading guilty, Ardent Leisure Limited has been sentenced in the Southport Magistrates Court in relation to Thunder River Rapids Ride tragedy at Dreamworld on 25 October 2016, where four people lost their lives.

The defendant pleaded guilty to three offences contrary to s.32 of the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (the WHS Act). Each charge concerned a breach by the defendant of its primary safety duty under s.19(2) of the WHS Act to ensure that the health and safety of members of the public were not put at risk.

Dreamworld’s parent company, Ardent Leisure, was fined a record $3.6M, with convictions recorded.

The matter was referred to the independent Work Health and Safety Prosecutor, Mr Aaron Guilfoyle, after Coroner James McDougall released his inquest findings. Mr Guilfoyle subsequently laid charges against Ardent Leisure.

“The brief of evidence referred to my office supported those charges,” said Mr Guilfoyle.

“The brief was thoroughly assessed against the Guidelines of the Director of Public Prosecutions. I determined, having considered the evidence, that it was not appropriate to lay any further charges, including against any individuals.”

Mr Guilfoyle hopes the result will give the families of the victims some sense that justice has been served.

“I am conscious that no penalty can account for their profound loss,” he said.

“However, the penalty is significant, the largest fine in the history of WHS prosecution in the country. Ardent Leisure today acknowledged its failures and, in the course of the sentence, it unreservedly apologised for them. The penalty imposed reflects the seriousness of the conduct of Ardent Leisure and the tragic consequences which flowed from it.”

Four guests on the Thunder River Rapids Ride at the Dreamworld Theme Park were killed after the raft they had been travelling in collided with another raft. The extensive Workplace Health and Safety Queensland investigation revealed failures across a number of areas.

In pleading guilty, Ardent Leisure accepted that it failed, so far as was reasonably practicable, to ensure: the provision and maintenance of safe plant and structures; the provision and maintenance of safe systems of work; and, the provision of the information, training, instruction and supervision that was necessary to protect all persons from risks to their health and safety.

Perkins says he wants to work on ensuring swimming remained strong in Australia.

“I have a strong desire to maintain swimming’s position as Australia’s most successful Olympic sport and with only a year out from Tokyo it’s important to keep a level of stability and focus,” he said.

“We need to keep building momentum and heading into an Olympic and Paralympic year there is no better opportunity to bring the sport and the country together and inspire future generations.

“More broadly, I would also like to work on connecting the dots within the sport’s wider community – bringing more people to our sport and growing and nurturing the stars of the future through our pathway to the elite.”

IAKS advises proportional European response As Europe moves into winter and covid cases are again surging, the International Association of Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) has distributed advice from their Expert Circle on Pools, authored by Dr Stefan Kannewischer, IAKS president.

IAKS urges, amongst other things, a sense or proportional response in relation to swimming pools and aquatic facilities. Below are some extracts.

Proportionality A comparison must be made with other facilities that are already open. What are the concrete reasons that make a public pool worse than a shopping centre or a furniture store?

A swimming pool is much better equipped for coronavirus prevention than, for example, shops or buildings generally open to the public. There is a high standard of cleaning and disinfection and frequent cycles. The ventilation systems are of superior standard.

The interiors and equipment are constantly supervised by professional staff. The number of users is automatically controlled by the admission system. Infection via the pool water can be excluded given efficient water treatment.

The aim of the lockdown has been to flatten the curve of infection and to prevent hospitals from being overloaded. In many regions this has been achieved. It is the responsibility of the State/ executive authorities to assess the proportionality of a covid-19 measure, to review it and to adapt it regularly to the prevailing situation. The question of proportionality must therefore be asked: is the continuing closure of swimming pools still suitable, necessary and appropriate to prevent the overloading of the health care system and an excessive risk of infection?

If the answer to this question is no, the order to close pools is a violation of the fundamental rights to freedom of trade, freedom of movement and health (eg. of persons who enjoy health benefits from pool use or of employees

who are under great mental strain as a result of the closure).

Disproportionality in this area can result in liability for damages.

Pool water and cleaning The legal requirements vary significantly between countries, but ensure in most countries that all viruses and bacteria in the pool water are killed by disinfection. The water values are continuously and automatically monitored at most pools as well as being measured two to three times a day by hand. Infection via the water can thus be prevented. The German Federal Environment Agency has confirmed this and declares in a statement on 12.03.2020 that coronaviruses “are easier to inactivate by disinfection procedures than noroviruses and adenoviruses”.

In addition, it is possible to accelerate the cleaning cycles during the day and the ongoing disinfection of handled surfaces (door handles, handrails etc.).

Ventilation In an NDR podcast, the German virologist Prof.

Dr Christian Drosten comments on coronavirus infections: “According to my estimates, half of the coronavirus transmissions are caused by droplet infection and almost the other half via aerosols. Perhaps 10 per cent are due to smear infection.”

The frequent instruction to wash hands and disinfect surfaces is therefore in his view “totally excessive”. Viruses only reproduce in living organisms, not on surfaces. This is in contrast to bacteria, which also reproduce on damp and warm surfaces. This means that infection with covid-19 occurs mainly via the air.

The physicist Prof. Dr Roland Netz, Dean of the Department of Physics at Freie Universität Berlin, has studied the lifespan of virus-containing droplets. About one percent of saliva consists of dissolved substances such as viruses, he says. When the water in the droplets evaporates, they become smaller and

the remaining particles can float around in the air longer (…) “What matters is the relative humidity.” If it can be regulated, it should not be too low. The droplets then do not shrink as quickly, and heavier droplets tend to sink to the ground. “Also, the mucous membranes will otherwise dry out and become more susceptible to viruses.”

Public indoor swimming pools usually have efficient ventilation systems with long distances to and from the ventilation unit. At many pools, there are five to six air changes per hour in the pool hall, i.e. one change every 10 to 12 minutes, and the air is also set to 30-32°C and 55 per cent relative humidity. Pietschmann: “A high air-change rate is certainly good for eliminating or diluting any viruses that may have been released.” Ventilation systems (except for pool halls in the winter season) should therefore be operated with 100 per cent fresh air without recirculation in order to rule out the recirculation of viruses or bacteria via the ventilation systems.

Recommended restriction of operation: • No admittance for users and employees with symptoms of infection.

• Limitation of number of users. The provisions vary from country to country. For instance, the maximum number of users simultaneously present can be limited to two-thirds of the available lockers.

• Limitation of the maximum number of users per pool and per sauna cabin.

• No wafting of the air with a towel after sauna infusions.

• Steam baths, brine inhalation rooms and caldariums (lukewarm rooms) should remain closed. Because the temperatures are lower than in a Finnish sauna at 80 degrees Celsius, experts are unable to agree on whether the viruses are killed off sufficiently quickly.

According to virologists and health authorities, everyone should do two things to protect themselves: (1) Practice social distancing. This is possible at swimming pools due to their spaciousness, professional supervision and control of admission. (2) Hygiene rules/hand washing. Users should sanitise their hands on arrival. Once on the pool premises, the hands are constantly washed anyway due to showering and bathing.

Making lifeguard training fun

ifeguarding can be challengingly boring, but why let that tedium into your in-services training as well? By being creative, staff are more engaged and can get more out of it, as opposed to just going through the motions.

Point-based competitions Turning your in-service training skills into competitions can be a great way to foster an environment where people want to attend.

Prizes for winners are nice, but not necessary (at least initially) as bragging rights can be just as, if not more, incentivising. Here are some point-based competitions that you can implement for various aspects of lifeguarding.

Skills: When practicing different skills (such as passive submerged retrieval) during an in-service, have a clear outline of all the things staff need to do for any given skill. Then, staff will start out with a score of 100 and lose points for any and every mistake made, and the person with the highest score at the end wins.

Scanning: Have objects hidden in the pool. Staff are given limited time to scan the whole pool, then are tested on what objects they saw.

Whoever saw and remembered the most, wins the competition.

Time element: Once the trainees are adept at these skills, you can add the element of time to push them harder and keep them interested.

Teamwork and leadership emphasis Teamwork is an integral part of any aquatics organisation. When it comes to emergency response it is of particular importance. So let’s emphasise it during your lifeguard training to stress to staff just how important, and difficult, it can be! Here’s how: Silent practice: To challenge your staff, when performing skills

Keeping lifeguards engaged during in-service training helps them remain focused on the training and the job

or events that require multiple lifeguards, make it mandatory that they not speak. If they speak they are disqualified. This can help staff focus on their own skills, while aiding your staff in identifying areas for improvement.

Single leader practice: If silence isn’t working for your lifeguards, or just for a different challenge, try limiting the number of people who can speak to one. By giving one person the ability to aid others, and provide directions when needed, staff can learn to depend on each other, and again can identify weaknesses to improve on.

Dictator practice: Just because your lifeguards have mastered the silence or the single leader doesn’t mean there aren’t other methods to challenge them further. Appoint one person in each group the supreme dictator of that group that must give ALL directions to staff. And no one can perform a skill unless explicitly told to do so by the dictator. While this can be difficult at first, once staff get the hang of it, it can really help your lifeguards hone their skills. Remember to start with easier skills, such as active victim rescues, before moving on to more difficult ones.

Rotating dictator practice: Having a single person that gives ALL direction is great. But it can be difficult for the weaker staff, while not challenging your skilled and experienced lifeguards. By having the position rotate between staff, they have to be comfortable and confident enough in their skills to be able to pick up wherever they’re told to, and provide instruction. Choose between timed segments of when the dic-

Each can offer unique benefits.

Teamwork, like other skills, can be learned, taught, practiced and cultivated. The same goes for leadership. Just because your lifeguards are not part of your management structure yet doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be placed into leadership roles. In fact, it can be an effective tool to see who among your lifeguarding staff are capable and prepared for supervisory positions.

By adding different aspects of lifeguarding to your in-service skills trainings, you can help your employees become not just effective lifeguards, but effective members of society and of any work environment. Remember, lifeguarding is often a first (or early) job, and as such it’s important that we instil in our staff the qualities we want to see in all our employees.

Giving staff awards and recognition for desired behaviour or excellently performed skills and responsibilities is an effective motivator in general. So why not apply those same principles to your lifeguard in-service trainings?

Fun awards: Not every aspect of a lifeguard training in-service has to be focus on the serious nature of the position. Everyone has found enjoyment in their lifeguarding jobs over the years, in one way or another. So why not encourage that kind of fun in your staff. After all, their enjoyment and happiness is an important key to retaining staff. So why not provide them with some fun and silly motivation or incentives? Give staff various awards that have to do with the skills or emphasis of

your in-service trainings. A good example is an award for most realistic drowning victim.

Seasonal awards: If you have ongoing lifeguard in-service trainings throughout your season(s) of operation, motivation from your staff can also be increased through long-term goals. Provide staff outlines for the long-term awards (whether seasonal or otherwise) and their accompanying rewards in order to keep them coming to your in-services and striving for excellence. Some good examples of seasonal awards going off of the ideas above are: fewest points lost, fastest brick sprint, fastest perfect back-boarding.

Whichever methods you choose to introduce to your in-services in order to keep your lifeguarding staff learning and improving, it is key to ensure safety is the most important goal.
