Australian packaging business Detpak opens first US manufacturing facility

Detpak has opened its first manufacturing facility in the US in Spartanburg, South Carolina

After more than 20 years serving the US market, Australian sustainable packaging solutions company Detpak has opened its first manufacturing facility in the US – in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The company states this move will strengthen its ability to support national Quick Service Restaurants (QSR) and foodservice operators with locally manufactured, paper-based packaging solutions.

Fully-owned by the Australian family-owned and operated business – the Detmold Group – Detpak designs, manufactures, and supplies the QSR, Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG), grocery, and food services industry with sustainable paper and cardboard packaging solutions.

Detpak has experience supplying global customers such as McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks,

Uber Eats, Burger King, Krispy Kreme, and Wendy’s across multiple international markets, including in the US. The company sells in 45 countries and owns manufacturing facilities in eight countries.

The new US manufacturing facility marks a significant step in Detpak’s global expansion and confirms its commitment to the North American market. By combining its global experience with local manufacturing capability, Detpak said it will be well-positioned to work with US customers as it will be able to provide improved supply chain reliability, reduced lead times, and operational flexibility.

Detpak CEO Sascha Detmold Cox said, “As we continue to grow our global footprint, opening our own manufacturing facility in the United States is a key milestone for our business.

Paul Cruickshank joins Ball & Doggett in managerial role Ball & Doggett has announced the appointment of Paul Cruickshank as national manager – cartonboard packaging.

Cruickshank joins Ball & Doggett following a planned, family-focused career break, returning to the industry with a refreshed perspective, alongside his extensive experience. Prior to this, he worked at Immij as its printing, packaging, and greenlife sales manager for a little over two years.

Other companies that he has worked for also include Direct Paper Supply, Spicers Australia, and PaperlinX. In his new role, Cruickshank will be responsible for Ball & Doggett’s cartonboard packaging portfolio nationally, with a focus on expanding market opportunities, and delivering high-quality solutions that meet evolving customer and market demands.

QLM’s Roastar deal supports $8M capacity expansion QLM Group has announced its strategic acquisition of the assets and client list of innovative coffee packaging solutions specialist Roastar, complementing its recent $8 million investment in new Australian production capacity.

QLM said the acquisition is a key milestone in its strategy to strengthen its position in the flexible packaging sector, bringing together Roastar’s specialist industry knowledge with QLM’s proven manufacturing, digital printing, and supply chain capabilities.

According to the company, key highlights of the acquisition include: • Exclusive PrimeVent rights, with QLM saying, “We are proud to hold the exclusive distribution agreement for the revolutionary PrimeVent degassing valve system. This innovation allows our clients to achieve a 95 per cent reduction in plastic while extending product shelf life”.

• Scaling for the future, with QLM adding that, “By integrating these assets into our existing manufacturing infrastructure, we

Screen installs PAC 830F in world first at Japan’s Chiyoda Gravure

Hot on the heels of being awarded ‘Best Flexible Packaging Press’ by the European Digital Press group (EDP), Screen has announced the installation of a Truepress PAC 830F at Chiyoda Gravure in Japan, in a world first.

The press is now installed and in full production at the latter’s Itako factory 2.

Chiyoda intends to use the new press to promote the delivery of value-added factors, for example: • Improve brand value through the provision of a diverse product range – Chiyoda will provide a variety of design options while using standardised package sizes and supporting the planning of limited time and region-specific products as well as test market items.

• Produce runs to flexibly accommodate small lot orders and the need for a diverse product line, thereby helping its clients to build their brand value.

• Optimise SKUs and reduce inventory – Chiyoda will establish a production system capable of supplying the necessary quantities at the required times, enabling its clients to optimise their packaging material inventory and reduce the number of SKUs. • Improve productivity and create a more worker-friendly production environment –

Chiyoda will reduce operator workloads by minimising plate changeovers and cleaning tasks while maintaining high quality.

• Strengthen efforts to reduce environmental impact – Chiyoda will seek to drive a comprehensive reduction in environmental impact by leveraging the benefits of water-based, solventless inks and plateless printing.

Thanks to its plateless digital process, the PAC 830F reduces material waste and both the cleaning and setup work required during job changeovers – compared to gravure or flexography. Both of these conventional processes will continue to dominate very long print runs, but brands are demanding more shorter runs.

The PAC 830F eliminates the need for photopolymer platemaking and gravure cylinders, with associated chemicals.

Capable of very short runs and multiple versions, it reduces wastage and package redundancy. Set-up times for jobs have been reduced by 70 per cent over conventional methods.

Screen said the flexible packaging market has experienced a growing requirement to expand high-mix, lower-volume production as consumer needs have diversified and product life cycles have become shorter.

As societies, especially in Australia and New Zealand, push to become more sustainable, there is a growing demand to reduce the environmental impact of manufacturing processes and optimise resource utilisation. Because it uses waterbased inks, the PAC 830F is well-positioned to address these sustainability issues.

Furthermore, Screen said the industry is facing an urgent need to address challenges such as rising raw material costs, faster time to market, and emerging procurement risks, as well as social issues including shortages of human resources, and that the PAC 830F eliminates these challenges.

Screen Graphic Solutions president Hiromi Sakurai said, “We are delighted that Chiyoda has begun full-scale operation using our Truepress PAC 830F. We specifically developed this press as a solution to support digitalisation and environmental sustainability in the flexible packaging market. Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate with our clients to create new market value and contribute to the realisation of a more sustainable printing industry”.

Locally, Screen GP Australia managing director Peter Scott said, “I have monitored the co-development of the PAC 830F at Chiyoda for some time and already we have had Australian flexible packaging printers travel to Japan to see this press in action.

The interest is high, as we are certain to emulate Europe’s industry transition toward solvent-free, water-based and food-safe inks, as converters face tightening rules on traditional VOC-heavy chemical usage”.

Chiyoda Gravure Corporation president Hiroyoshi Sato said, “We are working to upgrade our production capabilities in response to the trend toward high mix, low volume production and the growing demand for environmental sustainability. Our introduction of the Truepress PAC 830F has enabled us to establish a flexible production system complementing our existing gravure printing operations. Going forward, we aim to leverage the unique advantages of digital printing to offer new value. We believe this will make a significant contribution to the growth of our clients’ businesses”.

Looking forward, Chiyoda’s plan is to establish an optimal production model that effectively combines digital and traditional gravure printing, with a goal of achieving a digital printing output of around 10 per cent by 2030.

The two companies will work to build a production system that is capable of meeting diverse client needs while contributing to the sustainable development of the flexible packaging industry.

BGM launches new range of digital finishing machines UK-based finishing equipment manufacturer Bar Graphic Machinery (BGM) has launched Compact – a new range of finishing lines tailored specifically to the needs of those businesses which are printing labels digitally.

Compact and Compact Pro feature specific characteristics and capabilities that position them as an efficient and effective way of finishing labels that have been manufactured using all industrial digital print processes such as inkjet, toner and LEP. BGM managing director Adam James said, “The digital label printing market continues to grow strongly. To support this growth and allow label printers to take advantage of the opportunities, finishing must grow with the market.

“Through conversations with customers, internal research and my own experience, we know that as much as 80 per cent of the volume of labels printed digitally can be finished using a standard gloss varnish or lamination coupled with semi-rotary die-cutting.

“In reality, many label printers continue to run work down finishing lines that are overspecified for the needs of the digital label printing market. These finishing lines can offer high-value foiling, embossing, or laser die-cutting. This causes bottlenecks and costs printers time and money as equipment utilisation is not optimised to match their job basket. With the Compact range, we address this imbalance.”

Devised and developed by BGM’s engineering team in collaboration with James, Compact and Compact Pro are built on a heavy-duty, small footprint frame.

Corrugated event draws senior industry professionals Fespa organisers say its recent Corrugated expo attracted a total visitor attendance of 1,257 from 40 countries, adding that the event attracted a “high quality audience of senior industry professionals”, with 71 per cent of attendees holding senior roles (directors, chief executives, owners or managers) and 71 per cent possessing decision-making authority.

Omni to relocate to new 11,000sqm facility in Epping, Victoria Omni has acquired a new 11,000sqm facility at 82 Taryn Drive, Epping, in Victoria, with the business set to soon relocate to this facility, bringing all of Omni’s offices, warehouse, production, and service operations together under one roof in Melbourne for the first time.

Omni started in 1992, when founder Tim Salisbury started AAA Packaging out of a 400sqm building in Allenby Street, North Coburg. The business moved to a larger 800sqm site in Lambeck Drive in 1997 before building a 2,300sqm facility in Flight Drive in 2004.

In 2012 the company moved into its current 4,800sqm premises in Logistics Street and later acquired a 1,600sqm building in McGregors Drive to house its National Machinery and Service Department.

The new facility provides a much expanded warehouse space, along with a larger footprint for the machinery and service department, giving the team room to grow.

From reception through to custom printed tape, production and warehousing, each part of the business will operate out of the new site, which will be fitted out to meet Omni’s specific requirements.

“When I started AAA Packaging in 1992 in that little building in Allenby Street, North

Michael Dossor named new AIP president John Bigley has officially completed his three-year term as president of the AIP, handing over the reins to incoming president, Michael Dossor.

AIP executive director Nerida Kelton said, “With a 40-year career in the packaging industry and as a strong supporter of the institute, it is only fitting that Michael Dossor, CEO of Result Group, takes over as the next AIP president.

“Michael has been in the packaging industry for four decades and joined the AIP education team as a trainer and lecturer close to 10 years ago. He is as passionate about packaging as the rest of the AIP executive team and we all welcome him to the role.”

The artwork is printed with CMYK + two PMS colours and finished with a spot matte varnish and spot gloss varnish on specific areas of the design.

In addition, the carton is 100 per cent recyclable. Nerada is also accredited by the Rainforest Alliance, which is committed to a better future for people and nature.

Robert Marguccio to step down as chairman of APPMA Heat and Control business team manager Robert Marguccio has been the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA) chairman for 20 years, but recently announced he will be stepping down from the board of directors at APPMA at the conclusion of the 2026 annual general meeting in October.

Marguccio has more than 20 years of experience in the packaging industry, along with extensive experience in general management, manufacturing, sales, marketing, and R&D. He was elected to the APPMA board in September 2006 and his focus since joining has been on driving growth and progress of the association.

Marguccio wrote a letter to the members of APPMA, which said, “This has not been an easy decision. I have had the privilege of serving on this board since September 2006, and for the past two years, as chairman.

However, my responsibilities at Heat and Control have grown substantially, and I have reached a point where I can no longer commit the time and energy that a board directorship, and particularly the chairmanship demands.

“I have always believed that members deserve directors who are fully present and able to contribute meaningfully. To continue in a role where I could not meet that standard would, in my view, be a disservice

to you and to the association. It is for this reason, and with genuine regret, that I have chosen to step aside.”

Marguccio said serving on the APPMA board has been one of the great honours of his professional life.

“When I first joined, the association was known as the APMA, and our focus was predominantly on packaging. One of the achievements I am most proud of was helping to drive the decision to change our name to APPMA, a move that better reflected our industry’s breadth and signalled our intent to represent processing as well as packaging. It was a necessary step toward building a more inclusive association, and it laid the groundwork for much of what followed,” he said.

“I have also been deeply involved in the evolution of our flagship event. Chairing the AUSPACK subcommittee allowed me to work closely with the team at ETF through periods of change, always with the goal of ensuring

Chris Foley to step down as CEO of APCO The Board of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) has announced that CEO Chris Foley will step down at the end of November, after four years in the role.

During Foley’s tenure, APCO has stated it has achieved significant change in how it operates, how it engages with the packaging supply chain and all tiers of government, and how it works with its 2,500 members.

Brand owner participation in APCO has grown from 900 signatories in 2018 to 2,500 today and the Australasian Recycling Label now appears on more than 500,000 products. APCO has also developed the 2030 Strategic Plan – an industry-designed model for a co-regulatory Extended Producer Responsibility scheme which is now before government.

APCO chair Sam Anderson said the organisation has been strengthening its governance and delivery capability as the scope and complexity of what is needed continues to expand.

or many label converters, the question is no longer whether digital belongs in the production mix. It is how far digital can take the business – and how confidently it can support growth without adding complexity, labour pressure, or unnecessary waste.

For Mac’s Labels, the answer arrived in the form of Konica Minolta’s AccurioLabel 400.

Installed at the family-owned Brendale business in Queensland in June, the new dry-toner digital label press has immediately strengthened the company’s ability to respond faster, produce more competitively, and open new opportunities across food and beverage, industrial, medical, automotive, and specialty label work.

The investment also reflects a partnership built over time. Mac’s Labels first turned to Konica Minolta in 2019 with the installation of an AccurioLabel 190, a press that helped establish digital production as a core part of the company’s offering.

Seven years later, with demand rising and customers expecting shorter lead times, more stock options, and higher consistency, director David McCristal saw the need for a platform that could carry the business into its next phase.

A family business rebuilt around service Mac’s Labels began in 1988, founded

by McCristal’s father and initially focused largely on trade work. After the business changed hands in 2004, McCristal bought it back in 2014 and set about rebuilding it with a practical mix of digital, flexographic, and wide-format capability.

“When I took over Mac’s Labels, I installed a digital machine, a flexo machine, and some wide-format machines. We then started to slowly grow over the years.

We still service a lot of the trade, but we also now service other markets as well,” McCristal said.

That growth has been shaped by a clear point of difference: a willingness to help customers achieve high-quality labels with repeatable quality, delivered at speed, with fewer touches and fewer compromises, giving brand owners and trade customers more room to differentiate on shelf.

“We do offer lots of niche products, such as different substrates that a lot of other label printers do not offer. That’s what sets us apart from most other label printers and where we fill a gap in the market,” McCristal said.

According to Konica Minolta Australia production print specialist Blaise Masson, McCristal was clear about what the next press had to solve: more capacity, tighter colour consistency through the run, more stable web handling, more competitive production costs, and the ability to produce high-value white applications without the multiple passes.

“As such, the AccurioLabel 400 ticked a lot of boxes for Mac’s Labels. It delivered double the speed, one-pass white, web guides as standard to support a stable web, and IQ-520 automation to help maintain colour consistency at rated speed,” Masson said.

“The AccurioLabel 190 was a huge success and set the foundation for Konica Minolta having more than 2,000 label press installations globally, but David also knew where he wanted the next step to improve,” Masson said.

“He wanted more production capacity, stronger consistency, better web control, and a more efficient way to produce jobs requiring white toner.”

The AccurioLabel 400 addressed those priorities directly. It offers production speeds of up to 39.9m/min in CMYK and up to 20m/min in CMYK plus white, giving converters a significant lift in throughput while keeping the workflow straightforward.

Its fifth colour station enables highopacity white in one imaging pass, opening the door to transparent, metallic, and coloured substrates without the production drag that can come with slower or more complex processes.

value-adding processes. The result is not a disconnected production flow, but a productive print engine feeding the broader converting operation.

“We print on the AccurioLabel 400, then the jobs go straight through to our finishing unit, where they get die cut, laminated, varnished and so on. We’ve produced everything from food and beverage labels and automotive labels to medical labels on this press. We seem to be getting a lot more work from our current customers now that they know what we can achieve,” McCristal said.

About three months after installation, Mac’s Labels is already seeing the benefits: faster turnaround, improved production economics, stronger colour confidence, and a broader application range. For McCristal, the press is not simply a replacement for the AccurioLabel 190 – it is the next platform for where the business is heading.

Making room for growth The installation also prompted Mac’s Labels to rethink its factory layout. While the AccurioLabel 400 is compact for its class, the business needed to expand the room that had previously housed the AccurioLabel 190. McCristal had considered moving to a larger site, but Brisbane’s tight real estate environment made staying put the better option.

Instead, the company renovated its existing premises, adding an upstairs area and freeing valuable floor space for production. The decision improved the flow of the operation and positioned the business for further growth without the disruption of relocation.

“The renovations to our factory worked out better as it allowed for a better flow.

We built an upstairs for an office, which gave us a lot more floor space to work with, especially for the install of the AccurioLabel 400,” McCristal said.

The Konica Minolta team said Mac’s Labels had the site well prepared ahead of installation, helping the project move smoothly from delivery to production.

A partnership built on service Technology investment is only part of the story – the more important question is whether a supplier can help a converter keep producing when deadlines are tight and customer expectations are high.

“Working on the floor with our apprentices allows me to have constant engagement with them. This gives me better insight into how they are tracking, such as strengths and areas to improve,” he said.

“Likewise, I make it clear that they can ask me the same questions as many times as they need to. If they haven’t understood it the first time, then I can find a different way to convey the information.”

Platypus develops completely redesigned carton for Real Pet Foods Platypus redesigned Real Pet Foods’ packaging for automated production, improving efficiency, reducing labour, and delivering sustainability benefits

F

or more than eight years, Brisbanebased Platypus Print Packaging has partnered with Real Pet Foods to deliver packaging solutions that evolve alongside the customer’s changing production needs. But when Real Pet Foods invested in an automated packing line, the long-standing manually packed carton required a complete redesign to unlock greater efficiency without compromising product protection or consumer convenience.

Through close collaboration with the customer and packaging machine engineers, Platypus developed an innovative automated carton that streamlined manufacturing, reduced labour requirements, and delivered significant sustainability benefits.

The challenge Since 2020, Platypus had been producing a crash-lock carton for Real Pet Foods.

While the packaging performed well, it required manual hand packing, making the process labour intensive and limiting production efficiencies.

Due to the manual packing process, coupled with the extra space inside the case, pouches used to significantly move during transit and handling.

As Real Pet Foods invested in an automated packing line, it needed a new carton design that would integrate seamlessly with its machinery. The objective was to remove as much manual handling as possible while improving packing speed and production efficiency.

The previous box design also prioritised easy consumer access, leading to weak perforations prone to breakage before reaching shelves. This resulted in defective products on display, negatively impacting consumers, retailers, and brand image.

The solution Working closely with Real Pet Foods and the packaging machine engineers, Platypus was able to develop a completely redesigned carton that could be formed and packed automatically. The project involved extensive collaboration to ensure

In terms of manufacturing, to maintain the proven performance of the existing packaging, Platypus continued to use Formakote Spectra board sourced from the local mill in New Zealand. The cartons were printed on Platypus’ six-colour Koenig & Bauer press, precision Bobst diecut to the new design, hand-packed onto pallets, and wrapped and prepared for interstate transport.

every perforation, cut, and fold was positioned with precision.

The new design adopted a hybrid approach, focusing on redesigning and relocating the perforation area. The goal was to maintain ease of opening while minimising the risk of perforation breakage.

This involved adjusting the perforation’s placement to ensure durability without compromising accessibility.

Although the initial design resembled a ‘t’, numerous refinements were made to guarantee the carton would fold and form correctly on the automated packing line without compromising its strength or performance. The new Real Pet Foods 24-pack was also designed to have a slightly smaller footprint compared to some other packaging options. While the reduction in size is not significant, it allows for more efficient use of shelf space without compromising on product quantity.

This collaborative approach ensured the final design met both the technical requirements of the machinery and the practical needs of the customer.

The new carton successfully transitioned Real Pet Foods from a manual packing process to an automated production line, significantly reducing labour requirements and improving manufacturing efficiencies.

Beyond the technical achievement, Platypus said the project demonstrates the value of genuine collaboration. By working closely with the customer and machine engineers throughout the design process, Platypus was able to deliver a packaging solution that met complex production requirements while maintaining product quality and consumer convenience.

Sustainability outcomes were also achieved through optimisation of the packaging configuration. Real Pet Foods increased finished product density per pallet, resulting in a reduction in pallet utilisation across the supply chain.

In addition, the redesigned 24-pack format delivered a 50 per cent reduction in packaging footprint compared with the original design, improving transport efficiency, warehouse space utilisation, and overall logistics performance while reducing associated environmental impacts.

The completed carton forms into a compact cube and features a perforated opening, allowing consumers to easily tear away the front panel and remove one pack at a time. The design delivers a clean retail presentation while also supporting efficient automated production.

shown at the event, and thinking “OK, now I get it – this industry is huge!” It was eye-opening to see the complexity behind printing a label.

LOUPE is the global platform for the label and package printing industries, connecting business professionals in labels, flexible packaging, more specifically shrink sleeves and pouches, and in-line folding carton converting.

The 2002 event buzzed with discussions about the beginnings of e-commerce, in-mold technology, advancements in digital printing, and the ability to print on multiple substrates. It was a stunning introduction to an industry that thrives on innovation.

The Americas iteration will return to Chicago from 15-17 September at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont.

The origins of LOUPE Americas trace back to 1989, when the first Labelexpo Americas – then called Labelexpo USA – was launched in Rosemont. With around 60 exhibitors occupying a section of Hall A, the event was born out of the label sector’s need for a dedicated platform, as it felt overshadowed by general printing shows of the time.

This marked the beginning of the Labelexpo family, a specialised event that has since grown into a cornerstone of the label and packaging industry.

My journey began in June 2001. Even though I had been working behind the scenes on our event for over a year, to be completely honest, I had no idea what the event really was until I walked onto our show floor for the first time in 2002.

I vividly remember being completely blown away by the scale and innovation

The team making it big today Fast forward to today, and the event has evolved significantly. The equipment is faster, more efficient, and of higher quality.

Sustainability has become a priority, and automation and smart technologies are now integral to suppliers’ offerings.

The event has also expanded its global reach over the years, bolstered by initiatives such as the launch of our Label Summits, which debuted in Mexico City in 2004 and have since extended across South America.

Sustainability in packaging: moving from intention to impact LOUPE America’s 2026 sustainability ambassador Tyler Matusevich shares his perspective on the role of sustainable packaging and the innovations driving the industry forward

s director of sustainability, I work with customers, suppliers, recyclers, industry groups, and internal teams to connect big-picture goals with real-world packaging decisions.

challenge is that there is rarely a perfect answer. A package has to protect the product, run efficiently, meet regulatory requirements, look good, hit cost targets, and improve environmental outcomes.

Cost pressures from materials, labour, energy, freight, compliance, and testing make those trade-offs even harder.

Innovation will play an important role, especially in recyclable shrink sleeves, wash-off adhesives, lightweight materials, improved sortation, and better data systems.

Before Brook + Whittle, I spent several years at UPM Raflatac focused on sustainable labeling solutions, and I continue to stay involved with organisations such as TLMI, Sustainable Packaging Coalition (SPC), and the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR).

Combining product protection and recyclability

What first drew me to sustainability was realising how much impact packaging decisions can have. Packaging is highly visible, but it is also technical.

Behind every container, label, sleeve, adhesive, ink, coating, or material choice is a larger system of recycling infrastructure, sortation technology, regulation, and consumer behaviour.

A packaging component may seem small, but it can determine whether a package is recyclable, compostable, or reusable.

That complexity keeps the work interesting.

Most brand owners want to make better packaging decisions, but they are balancing sustainability with cost, performance, appearance, regulation, and speed to market. My role is to make that process more practical and less overwhelming.

Beyond ‘eco-friendly’ claims One of the biggest trends shaping the industry is the shift from broad sustainability claims to specific, evidencebased packaging design. It is no longer enough to call a package ‘eco-friendly’.

Brands need to understand whether it is recyclable, whether the label or sleeve works within the recycling stream, whether it can be sorted properly, how packaging choices may affect EPR fees or regulatory obligations, and the carbon footprint through life-cycle analysis.

This matters for labels and package decoration. Labels, sleeves, adhesives, inks, and coatings are not always the largest

part of a package by weight, but they can determine whether the entire package succeeds or fails in recycling.

The right label technology can help brands maintain shelf impact while supporting recyclability.

Many light-sensitive products, including dairy, beverage, nutraceutical, and personal care have traditionally relied on white or coloured PET packaging to protect product quality. New lightblocking sleeve technologies are helping brands move to recyclable clear PET while maintaining light protection, shelf appeal, and product integrity.

Innovation in sustainable packaging

Sustainable packaging has become a normal part of packaging development rather than a separate conversation.

Digitalisation and AI are also changing sustainable packaging. Digital tools can help teams manage packaging data, compare design options, support compliance, reduce artwork errors, and improve production efficiency.

Design-for-recycling principles are built in from the start. EPR and eco-modulation will push companies to better understand the packaging they put into the market.

Recycled content, smart packaging, and data transparency will continue to grow.

AI can help analyse packaging information, identify risks, and speed up decision-making. These tools will not replace packaging expertise, but they can help teams make better decisions faster.

That is why I think LOUPE Americas is so important. As the show evolves from Labelexpo to LOUPE, it reflects where the industry is heading: a broader view across labels, mid-web flexible packaging, inline carton converting, automation, smart packaging, and sustainability.

Changing consumer expectations Consumer expectations are changing too.

Consumers still care about sustainability, but they are more skeptical of vague or unsupported claims.

They want packaging that is recyclable, responsibly sourced, or made with recycled content, while still expecting convenience, quality, affordability, and product protection. The biggest

Willing sellers + willing buyers = the perfect conditions When sellers are motivated, buyers are motivated, and management teams are motivated to improve performance, things start happening

take pride sharing to friends, family, and colleagues that BrightCast is flat out with several great projects. And when they ask, “Why are you so busy right now?”, I haven’t really had a clear answer, so here goes!

BrightCast’s workload is now bouncing between packaging businesses, manufacturers, distributors, agricultural businesses, and service companies, and while the industries are different, the conversations are becoming surprisingly similar.

Over the past few years, most business owners have been dealing with a steady stream of cost pressures. Inflation pushed up the cost of raw materials. Interest rates increased the cost of debt. Labour became more expensive and harder to find.

Insurance, energy, freight, compliance, and technology costs all seemed to move in one direction. Now add fuel and resin, and anything else remotely connected to global conflict.

For a while, many businesses absorbed the impact by looking for operational improvements and cost out. Where possible, these have been passed through to customers, but we all know how challenging those conversations tend to be. Eventually though, there comes a point where there are no easy levers left to pull.

What I think we are seeing now is the cumulative effect of several years of economic pressure finally catching up with many businesses. The result is that companies seem to be falling into one of three camps: 1. Sellers The first are business owners who have decided that now might be the right time to sell.

These aren’t necessarily distressed businesses. In many cases they’re great businesses with loyal customers, capable management teams, and a long history of success. But owners are looking ahead and asking themselves whether they want to commit another five or 10 years to navigate increasingly complex operating conditions.

starting to converge, and so the gap between expectation and reality narrows, and that’s why good transactions are about to happen.

And then there’s the third group and probably the largest – businesses not looking to sell and not looking to buy; they are focused on improving performance.

3. Improvers

Good transactions happen when the pool of willing buyers and sellers converge

In some cases, there isn’t an obvious succession plan. In others, the business requires further investment to reach the next stage of growth. Sometimes the owner is simply tired. After spending years battling one challenge after another, an exit starts to look appealing.

Many management teams have now agreed their FY27 budgets with full understanding that there are ambitious growth and earnings targets attached to them. In some cases “yet to be identified” benefits. The challenge is that achieving those targets isn’t as simple as finding another few percentage points of price increase. Most businesses have already exhausted the obvious savings opportunities.

The second group are businesses with strong balance sheets that see opportunity.

As a result, there is a huge amount of focus on transformation. Cost reduction programs, procurement initiatives, asset utilisation projects, automation, operational efficiency, and organisational redesign are all on the agenda. Business owners know they need to improve earnings, and many are working hard to find a path to those improvements.

These companies have generally managed the past few years well. They’ve protected cash, maintained profitability and financial discipline, and are now looking at the market and seeing opportunities that may not have existed a few years ago.

I think that’s why my phone keeps ringing.

When sellers are motivated, buyers are motivated, and management teams are motivated to improve performance, things start happening. Right now, all three forces seem to be at play at the same time.

They are not necessarily looking for distressed assets (although that is also happening with a significant number of businesses entering administration).

Instead, it is good businesses that are far more attractive in the current climate, where valuation expectations are becoming more realistic and where acquisitions can accelerate growth far quicker than building organically.

Different industries, different challenges. The same underlying theme: after several years of economic pressure, businesses are being forced to make decisions. Some are choosing to sell, some are choosing to buy, and many are choosing to change. Put all three together and you have the perfect conditions for activity. This probably explains why BrightCast is so busy right now!

2. Buyers

Put simply, buyers are willing and sellers are willing. More importantly, both sides are increasingly realistic. For years we’ve seen sellers anchored to yesterday’s valuations and buyers focused on tomorrow’s risks. Those views are

As the owner of the global Certification Scheme FSSC 22000 for Food Safety, together with its Certified Organisations across the globe, it soon realised that the impact was going to be at grass-roots level within food organisations.

According to Kelly Mulholland, technical manager of safety and quality at FSSC, “The first step was to create impactful solutions for food businesses via the tools available through FSSC. “To this end, we decided to add a specific requirement on Food Loss and Waste (FLW) in Version 6 of our Certification Scheme. As a result, more than 30,000 organisations were required to implement policies and strategies addressing FLW. This contributed to progress on SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, and specifically Target 12.3.”

The additional requirement on FLW was included in V6 in the Certification Scheme (Part 2, Section 2.5.16) and applies to all

The team at FSSC understood that packaging plays a vital role in reducing Food Loss and Waste, particularly in relation to the design of packaging materials.

After joining the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), FSSC soon discovered that the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP) had already established a researchdriven set of Save Food Packaging guidelines, in partnership with RMIT University and End Food Waste Australia.

These guidelines have been designed to be implemented by macros, SMEs, and multinational food and beverage companies in any corner of the globe.

Mulholland added that “To address this, we recently announced Version 7 of the FSSC 22000 Certification Scheme now incorporates a new requirement under product design and development, which applies to all organisations that design primary packaging and packaging material”.

Mulholland added that “Foundation FSSC now has over 40,000 Certified Organisations that are required to consider these packaging design principles, resulting in further support for the reduction of Food Loss and Waste”.

The packaging design requirements included within FSSC 22000 V7 (Part 2, 2.5.13) were developed with the support of the WPO, of which FSSC is an affiliate member, and the AIP, is a full member.

The design requirements that in Version 7, are based on aspects of the AIP’s Save Food Packaging Design Principles, which have been globalised by the WPO. FSSC looks forward to further collaboration with the WPO and the AIP on this important topic and creating even more impact within food companies across the world.

Innovation essential to stay ahead of packaging regulations: GlobalData According to research firm GlobalData, brands should continue to commit to their circular economy strategies as fundamentals of business operation

he ongoing evolution of packaging regulation globally, motivated by concerns for the environment and the need to accelerate sustainability within the industry, creates a powerful incentive for packaging manufacturers and their clients to adapt quickly and innovate, particularly as key deadlines set by regulators in markets such as the EU come ever closer, says GlobalData.

Moves such as the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, part of its wider Circular Economy Act, mean a truly global shift is underway in expectations of packaging sustainability, requiring R&D departments and corporate strategists to take decisive near-term steps.

Food for human consumption remains the single largest end-use sector for packaging coatings globally

ew research from Smithers has revealed that barrier coatings dominate a global coatings market, valued at nearly US$15.4 billion in 2026, with water-based and specialty coatings set to drive fastest growth to 2031.

Data in its new multi-client study, The Future of Packaging Coatings to 2031, which includes extensive primary research of more than 60 in-depth interviews conducted across the value chain –show that barrier coatings represent the largest segment of the global packaging coatings market, accounting for demand of 4.4 million tonnes with a value of US$9.97 billion in 2025.

Extrusion coatings currently hold the largest share of total packaging coating volume at 33.4 per cent, with polyolefins accounting for over 63.5 per cent of that demand; yet it is water-based coatings and specialty vacuum deposition technologies that are forecast to record the fastest volume growth over the next five years.

Smithers said the European Union’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which came into effect in February 2025 and is due for full implementation by July 2026, alongside the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive, is fundamentally reshaping what packaging is acceptable in the world’s most tightly regulated market.

Europe is consequently expected to be the largest growth market for sustainable packaging coatings through to 2031.

But, the study found the Asia-Pacific region remains the dominant force in global packaging coatings consumption, underpinned by a large and growing population, rapid urbanisation, rising disposable incomes, and surging demand for convenient packaged food and beverages.

Growth across the forecast period will be fastest, however, in South America and the Middle East and Africa, as packaging infrastructure and consumer markets continue to develop rapidly in those regions.

“Coatings are no longer simply a functional addition to packaging – they are increasingly the technology that will determine whether a format can meet the recycling and circularity requirements now being demanded by regulators and consumers alike,” Smithers consultant and co-author of the report Robert Outram said.

“Many traditional materials are now under threat, and coatings innovation is central to finding commercially viable alternatives.”

The study also found solvent-based coatings, long the industry standard for demanding applications including flexible plastic films and aluminium foils,

have been in gradual decline since 2023 – a trend that will accelerate.

In the primers segment alone, solvent-based technologies held a 51.3 per cent volume share in 2025, but this figure has been eroding steadily as formulators transition toward water-based systems (44.6 per cent share) and radiation-curable technologies, the latter experiencing the fastest rate of growth of any primer category.

Smithers said the transition is not without difficulty: water-based systems continue to face performance challenges on plastic substrates, particularly in adhesion and drying speed, and both water-based and UV-curable primers must close a meaningful performance gap against established solvent-based products.

Food for human consumption remains the single largest end-use sector for packaging coatings globally, representing 2.74 million tonnes of demand in 2025 – 39.4 per cent of the global market – valued at US$5.89 billion.

The beverage sector follows closely, accounting for a further 30.8 per cent of volume demand at US$4.55 billion.

Savoury snacks and confectionery are identified as the highest growth drivers within the food category.

The pharmaceuticals and healthcare segment, while accounting for just 4.5 per cent of volume in 2025, is forecast to be the fastest growing end-use application to 2031, reflecting the highly technical performance requirements in that sector and the slow but accelerating shift toward more sustainable pharmaceutical packaging solutions.

Smithers added that the mainstream transition by major fast food chains from plastic to paper fibre-based foodservice products is generating significant demand for paper coatings that can meet grease, moisture, and heat resistance requirements without the use of fluorocarbon chemistry.

Water-based acrylic barrier coatings are identified as a leading candidate for highvolume cup applications, offering compatibility with repulping systems used in paper recycling.
