This year’s theme of Printed In New Zealand is really what it’s all about.

For a small nation we have a wonderful number of incredibly talented craftsmen who turn out some amazing print work year upon year.

The quantity of entries may be a few less than in our heyday, but the quality of work remains second to none.

It was such a joy to come together and enjoy a splendid Gala Dinner at the beautiful Te Pae Convention Centre in Christchurch where the feeling of celebration was evident with both medal winners and finalists alike.

A giant congratulations goes to Dave, Jan and the team at Logick Print & Graphics who took home their 4th Supreme trophy!

I would like to thank our team of judges who take time out of their busy schedules to painstakingly view each entry on the table, often multiple times, to ensure only the best get through.

FROM THE CHAIR Despite another year of Covid-19 giving us all the run around, this did not inhibit the impressive collection of entries into the 29th year of New Zealand’s Pride In Print Awards.

The talent behind the works submitted, and the quality involved in such pieces over all categories, were once again second to none.

On behalf of the Awards committee, I would like to acknowledge those recognised at this year’s awards, and their successes. The Category and Process winners rose to the top of their class and the Supreme Winner outshone some truly outstanding entries.

Congratulations to you all.

A huge thank you must once again go out to our amazing team of judges who contribute their time, energy and expertise into the process of selecting the ‘best of the best’.

None of this is ever possible without the non-wavering commitment of our remarkable Patron, FujiFilm, who have stood by the Awards through very difficult times – we thank you. I would also personally like to thank the dedicated Awards committee for their hard work over the past 12 months steering the programme through yet another challenging year.

CONVENOR OF JUDGES I have once again had the privilege of stepping up as convenor of judges for the second year, and it has been a pleasure working with some of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in the industry.

I would like to thank all the judges for their time and effort required to judge the entries submitted from 2021. This is no small feat and requires these judges to be away from their place of business for a couple of days. The calibre of entries improves year on year which also makes the judging more demanding.

I would also like to thank the employers who support the Pride In Print Awards by giving the judges the time required to get this job done.

2021 was an extremely challenging year with one of the longest lock downs in the world, workforces disrupted due to illness, and supply chain challenges. But we’ve hung in there, and it is really pleasing to see everyone continuing to produce extremely high quality work and submitting entries, which is what the Awards is all about.

APPRENTICE OF THE YEAR 2021

KOSEMA FUIONO | Blue Star Collard

Kosema Fuiono of Blue Star Collard in Auckland was named Print Apprentice of the Year on stage at the Pride In Print Awards gala dinner.

Also named the Heidelberg Offset Apprentice of the Year, Kosema described the “impossible becoming the possible”.

On winning the Award he paid glowing tribute to his fellow finalists and their employers, and then warmly thanked his own employers and fellow team members.

“I believe I am receiving this award on behalf of the very positive and supportive team of Blue Star Collard and the whole of Blue Star in Auckland and New Zealand,” he said.

Kosema said he was “stoked”. “It is a very big achievement for me, from where I have started and how far I have come. I am really proud and happy and it is a story I want to tell my kids – that if you want something then you are going to have to work hard for it.

“I don’t like to take any ‘all me’ credit, I like to pay thanks to those who have helped me to train. Without them giving me the knowledge, I wouldn’t be here today.”

TRAINING COMPANY OF THE YEAR POLYMER SYSTEMS INTERNATIONAL, NAPIER Polymer Systems are based in regional New Zealand and are a unique business with an international market.
