Heidelberg’s new chairman takes over

IN BRIEF UPM RAFLATAC has achieved sustainability certification from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification Scheme ISCC Plus at its Nancy factory in France, which specialises in wine and spirits product labelling as well as special product ranges for retail, logistic, pharmaceutical, and food. The company aims to be the first label material company to move beyond fossil-based materials to renewables or recycled content, and from a linear to a circular economy. To do so, raw materials must come from sustainable sources via a verifiable and transparent value chain.

FLINT GROUP has completed the sale of its XSYS division to Lone Star Funds, a private equity firm. Steve Dryden, chief executive for Flint Group CEO, says, “We are delighted to have completed the sale of our XSYS division. The transaction is attractive, both financially and strategically, for Flint Group as we reinforce our position as a leader in conventional and digital printing consumables and equipment for the structurally growing segments of paper and board, flexible packaging, and narrow web labels.”

DRUPA has called for participation in its international drupa global trends survey.

Sabine Geldermann, director of Print Technologies at Messe Düsseldorf, says, “In view of the continuous change and further developments in the industry, current, representative market data and assessments of global industry participants are more relevant than ever. Dr Ludwin Monz has succeeded Rainer Hundsdörfer as chairman of the Heidelberg Management Board.

“We want to prioritise our strategy and the expansion of our leading position in our core markets even more closely in line with customer needs.

TRMC merges two years’ awards The Real Media Collective (TRMC) says the Real Media Awards will merge its 2021 and 2022 years.

It has announced a gala event for September this year. Kellie Northwood, chief executive officer at TRMC, says, “With Western Australia’s border now open and New Zealand opening in April we are able to confidently provide a true Trans-Tasman gala event as we have successfully achieved over the past seven years. Borders and density

NEWS Currie Group introduces Cron B1 platesetter Currie Group has announced the availability of the new Cron 46H+ B1 platesetter.

Craig Paul, country manager Currie Group New Zealand, says, “Local commercial printers can now integrate this costeffective solution into their production workflow.”

Five years ago, Cron released its H and G series platesetters. Craig says, “With its 46H+ B1 platesetter, Cron has advanced the technology with a range of innovative features in this next generation solution. These range from manual and auto loading configurations to a new touch panel for greater ease of operation.”

An external B1 drum platesetter, the Cron 46H+ also accepts B2 and B3 format plates. Its autoloader takes take up to 200 B1 plates in unattended operation, with automated slip sheet removal. Other features include a dynamic triple drum balance mechanism and internal temperature control.

The maintenancefree laser head carriage incorporates a linear magnetic drive with positional accuracy of

DIC bolsters its ULM capacity Ink giant DIC has acquired Italian adhesives and polymers manufacturer Sapici to boost its ultra-low monomer (ULM) capability.

The DIC Group says Sapici was the first company in the world to successfully commercialise ULM polyisocyanate with the lowest possible hazardous substance content.

With a policy to concentrate resources on packaging solutions, DIC wants to bolster its product portfolio and strengthen its production capabilities through joint ventures; mergers and acquisitions; as well as other actions.

IN BRIEF KODAK has installed the world’s largest CTP system, measuring almost 19 metres in length, at WKS Group in Essen Germany, which now boasts a Magnus Q4800 Platesetter with an XPL pallet loading system with four pallet stations for four different plate formats.

WKS Group’s Magnus Q4800 configuration allows fully automatic XLF plate loading from four pallets. With up to 4,800 plates online, it enables over 10,000 square metres of plates to run before reloading.

Kodak says the new system will improve plate imaging quality, automation and productivity.

XAAR has acquired Megnajet, which designs and makes ink management and supply systems. Industry Background My Printing career started in an Offset Printing company in the UK. I worked in the Bindery learning all aspects of Print Finishing before getting on to the Heidelberg Presses. I attended courses at the London College of Printing including Technical knowledge, Print Estimating and Business courses as my career moved into Sales, Production and Operations before managing a Print Company, which was also my first role when I arrived in NZ. I have also worked for one of the Bluestar companies then Print Management before coming to Ricoh.

Areas of specific interest All things Print – the print market is continuously evolving and is a strong component of a multi-channel strategy that can be overlooked in an increasing digital space. Ovato heatset closure highligh

W

ith its announcement that it will cease heatset production at its Wiri plant making more than 100 workers redundant, Ovato has brought the paper supply chain crisis sharply into focus for the local industry.

The company closed its Christchurch branch in September 2021, and will now only keep a smaller sheetfed production line at its Auckland plant.

Since Norske Skog closed the Kawerau Mill at the end of June last year, newsprint is now imported. However, the company still has its Tasmanian mill operating for New Zealand customers.

Overseas, a range of factors have contributed to the global shortage. The Russian invasion of Ukraine has led to a ban on

Russian paper and suppliers, which means at least a 20 per cent drop in European paper supplies. Supply chains were already affected because of the Covid-19 pandemic and prices will continue to rise.

Paul Gardiner, managing director for Ovato New Zealand, said the decision to shut down the heatset operation was not made lightly. He explained, “We simply cannot run a sustainable heatset business without paper.

“This is a devastating blow for our committed clients, many of whom we have partnered with over several years championing the ‘power of print’ through marketing plans.”

She said, “We send our absolute thoughts to Ovato New Zealand, a very difficult day for all. TRMC has and will continue to provide support during this phase not only for Ovato New Zealand, but for the wider New Zealand membership and industry.”

She pointed out that demand for paper has actually increased. She added, “Paper supply into New Zealand is at critical levels with the impact of lost local manufacture upon the closure of the Norske Skog paper mill last year and shifting production to the Tasmanian Boyer mill in Australia. It is my understanding, much of the volume consideration was based on newspaper and catalogue decline which has not occurred. Readership and volumes have bounced back from the pandemic and this, newzealandprinter.co.nz

Mike Horler, general manager Horton Media coupled with the supply issues from Europe, is creating a significant imbalance to the supply/demand ration across catalogue paper grades.

“International freight issues due to the Covid pandemic; the Ukraine-Russia War impacting softwood supply; extended UPM industrial dispute, international port entry refusals; and border matters with overall global volume shortages across manufacture are all contributing to a perfect storm with disastrous impact for our newspaper and catalogue sectors.

“Order to delivery time frames into Australia and New Zealand currently carry lead-times of 6-8 months and 9-11 months respectively, with many shipping lines refusing to deliver to New Zealand ports and many deliveries facing unscheduled holdings at Singapore where containers are simply unloaded and held due to unforeseen or undisclosed reasons. For all of these impacts, we are presenting to both Australian and New Zealand governments the need for additional support whether with freight subsidisation across imports or support to rebuild local production in the region.”

Contracted supply Prior to Ovato’s announcement, New Zealand Printer reported online how a shortage of newsprint supply has impacted several local print companies but not so much local newspaper printers, who had secured contracts enabling newzealandprinter.co.nz

a steady supply. Mike Horler, general manager at Horton Media, said, “This is something we had talked about for some time, so we locked in our supply a while back.”

Similarly, Stuff and NZME have contracts with their suppliers. Russell Wieck, operations manager at NZME, commented, “We appreciate that it has been difficult to get paper for some time now, so we are pleased to have an ongoing contract for supply.”

Ricky Baker, operations manager at Stuff, concurred saying, “Ensuring supply is essential for us. No one can predict the future but we need newsprint so that we can continue to provide all of our services.”

Some commercial printers looking further afield for newsprint have so far had better outcomes than Ovato.

Bernie Roberts, chief executive officer Webstar New Zealand, says, “The expectation when Norske Skog closed its New Zealand operation was that their Australian operation would have sufficient capacity for everyone’s ongoing needs.

For a range of reasons that hasn’t ended up being the case and commercial printers like us have had to source newsprint from elsewhere.

“This is an important issue for us right now and over time these supply problems and the associated price increases that we (web printers) are currently facing will eventually impact other sectors of the industry.

“Webstar is a resourceful company, full of talented people and we’re committed

Transition for workers About 60 per cent of those losing their jobs at Ovato are E tū members. Site delegate Owen Sinclair said affected workers felt the shock. He said, “Some have worked here for 20-30 years. People are now going to have to work through what their entitlements are and when they’re going to finish.”

Joe Gallagher, negotiation specialist at E tū, says the closure was an example of the effect of ruptured supply chains. He said, “Importing paper is not only expensive due to the huge increase in shipping costs, but there’s around a seven-month wait time to get paper from Europe. Companies also face the risk that the price of what they’re shipping can increase again while in transit.”

Ovato is making efforts to help workers find employment with other print companies.

Gallagher added, “We need to work together with companies and workers to get the best outcome for workers, as certain industries wind down and others ramp up.

“A just transition means things like creating plans for workers to retrain if necessary and to support them to transfer their existing skills to other roles. “I left school in 1960 with three years’ secondary and not much else. In 1961, I started a 10,000 hour apprenticeship as one of 52 young people taken on by the Government Printing Office. Vern was instrumental in helping me get into Government Print (GP). He was well known for sharing the odd whisky with Roy Owen, the Government Printer at the time.”

I

ntroduced to his father’s local print business as an after school part-timer in the mid-1950s, Marton Print managing director Alan Buckendahl describes having subsequently enjoyed a long and prosperous career in the sector – from which as yet, he shows no signs of resiling.

In a similar experience to that of his father, Ray, Alan recounts embarking on his pathway through early pursuit of an apprenticeship. He says, “My father had left school in 1927 after two years at Wanganui Technical School and served his apprenticeship as a handset typographer at the Wanganui Herald.

“One of his early mentors was Henry Tyler, a self-employed printer with a print operation in his backyard in Aramoho, where his chooks were part of the scene. Alan says, “Henry was one of my godfathers and printing was definitely in my blood. Dad had great contacts in Wellington, people like Ivan Quinlan and Vern Bullivant from Morrison Printing Inks and Graham Dawson from BJ Ball, who often had lunch with our family when they were doing their rounds.

A career begins As a then 15-year-old apprentice, he recalls duly checking into Wellington’s Antrim House, then a Public Service boys’ hostel for 15-year-olds to 21-year-olds, from which it was an eight minute walk to his first “real” workplace in Walters Street.

He describes the training as “amazing”. He says, “On the ground floor were the rotary machines used mostly for printing tram and bus tickets, and a lot of IRD forms.

“I was on the first floor and progressed from training on an almost-new Vickerbold hand platen, which included short print runs of four-colour Christmas cards for senior MPs. Then onto a Printomatic cylinder machine, a CE Kelly stop cylinder and then a transfer to the old brick GP office across the road from Wellington Railway Station.

“By this time the intensive training I had been put through

at Walters Street, under the guidance of apprentice instructor Fred Hyder, overseer Ron Austen and foreman Gordon Coates, had made a lasting impression. Upstairs was the comp room, but I resisted all efforts to change from machining to composing.

“I was paid four pound, 12 shillings and ten pence per week, and my board in the hostel was 30 shillings.

He recalls the tutelage continuing at GP’s head office under the “watchful eyes” of Clive Blair, who he describes as a “softly-spoken Scotsman with a wealth of knowledge”.

Alan continues, “After a few months on Vertical Miehles, I finished my 10,000 hours working in the basement on Quad Crown Miehle perfectors.

The bulk of the type used was monoset – a full forme of Hansard or New Zealand Encyclopaedia weighed plenty.”

While working in the “old” building, he saw the “new” GP building being completed in Mulgrave Street. He says, “Unfortunately, in my opinion, the Government Printer and his chief engineer had travelled overseas and purchased a fleet of letterpress Tirfing two revolution machines from Sweden. Why they settled for these rather than Heidelbergs, no one ever understood.”

journey stamped in print on Wellington’s Cambridge Terrace. He says, “This was largely spent training a new apprentice on a new Heidelberg platen while watching enviously a man nearby printing LP record covers one colour at a time on a Heidelberg Kord.

“If he thought I was taking too much interest he would tell me to ‘Bugger off!’ He was very protective of his skills.”

A period followed with Commercial Print on Boulcott Street, where Alan learned “a new raft of skills doing mostly colour work, back on relatively new Vertical Miehles”.

Back to the future As a newly-wed, Alan, alongside wife Dale duly returned to Marton Printery in 1968.

He says, “Dale was amazed at the friendliness of Marton people, only 4500 of them, and it seemed to her that I knew all of them.

“By now I was paid $54.38 for working a 44-hour week.

Rent was not bad though, three dollars per week for a farm cottage about eight kilometres out of town.”

However, as the 1980s approached he says it became apparent his father was uninterested in progressing from a predominantly all letterpress operation to offset, “which was the way of the future, or so I thought then”.

He says, “I was operating letterpress machines and had started to ‘cut my offset teeth’ on a pair of very second-hand Multiliths: a 1250 and an 1850.

“Dale and I talked to our bank to see if it was viable to purchase a print shop in Whakatane that was on the market. However, when we told my parents that was what we had in mind, which obviously would involve us moving with our two children, their dearly-loved grandchildren, we agreed to purchase the business from my parents and stay in town.

“So, four mortgages later on March 1, 1982, we commenced trading as Marton Printery Ltd, with my father continuing on as a compositor. newzealandprinter.co.nz

“Having then acquired one of the first six Heidelberg GTO 52s to arrive in the country, the business transformed rapidly; thank you AA Finance.

“By then our linotype was being set in Palmerston North by Campbell Typesetters. Our next move, in 1985, was to purchase the latest Comp Edit typesetting system, and we also looked for a person to train as an operator.

“We had three applicants and the AM International training person agreed to trial them for me, and make a recommendation. Lucretia Galpin (now Earnshaw) was the successful applicant. She commenced work in December 1985 and is still with us today as a very competent office manager, 37 years later.

“And in that time of course, the bulk of our work has changed to being produced digitally.”

Reading the tea leaves By 2008, he says it had become obvious that, “Plant and machinery purchases could no longer be justified in a small business such as ours and there had to be a better way if I was going to retire at 65”.

Important discussions ensued with his wife and the firm’s “loyal accountant” David Tarrant, before Alan, the couple’s son Mike and David paid a visit to Astra Print in Wellington.

Alan says, “We met their key players and ultimately became part of what is now printing. com, operating out of Grenada North.

“Our territory covers Marton and Dannevirke, and for a few years Mike, a fully qualified offset machinist, operated a similar franchise in Palmerston North.

“So today, the bulk of our work is set in Marton by our graphic designer Barbara Hehir.

Signed off files are emailed to Grenada and the finished work arrives back at Marton as quickly as we could have produced the work in-house.”

He adds that, at the time of embarking on this venture, the business began to trade as Marton Print, “and ultimately

Personal interests Alan describes involvement with and progressing through the ranks of the local Masonic Lodge as having been one of his notable external interests over the years.

He says, “I have fond memories of being installed as Master of the Lodge at the same meeting that my father was installed as Almoner.

“I no longer maintain my lodge membership, but do support my ‘Mother Lodge’ where possible.”

He and his wife also shared an interest in boating for many years, predominantly via Motuoapa Marina at the southwestern end of Lake Taupo. He says, “We both got very involved with the Motuoapa Boating and Fishing Club, serving firstly on the committee and progressing over the years to hold positions as president (Alan) and secretary (Dale). Ultimately we were both made life members, a special honour for both of us.”

Continued from page 11 Motuoapa and opened a T-shirt, wool and photocopier shop in nearby Turangi. He says, “However, we found that it was a lot of work and only ever lost money. So after a three-year period, while son Mike attended secondary school in Taupo, I worked as a machinist at the Taupo Times and Dale was a couple of minutes away working as office manager at Unichem.

“Marton Print continued to trade with my oversight at a distance, until my chief machinist, Bruce Keith, who had done his apprenticeship with me as a school leaver, left for fresher fields in Hawke’s Bay. “I then returned to Marton, back onto the GTO, which by then had been joined by a GTO ZP perfector, and ultimately, after the death of my father, we bought the family house from his estate and still live there.”

Print industry representation He has enjoyed his involvement with and appreciated the service of the print industry’s member organisations. He says, “Somewhere in all of this I spent some years on the committee of the Palmerston North branch of PrintNZ, as it is now, with men such as Richard Hannah, Ed Boyd, and Reg Dixon: a great team.

“This involvement has provided a pleasant way of keeping in touch with trade trends and partaking in various work-related visits.

“I’d also like to offer a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to Glenda Keegan, Ruth Cobb and the rest of the PrintNZ team for the support I have received over many years at very minimal cost.

Your efforts are appreciated.”

Current outlook Fully illustrating the ongoing bond and mutual endeavours shared with Dale, whom he describes as his “long-suffering wife”, Alan says the couple currently spend much time involved with the Marton RSA, where he is president and she is women’s welfare officer.

He says, “We both find it a worthwhile cause, keeping alive the memories of both sets of parents. Both of our fathers served in the New Zealand Army in the Middle East during WWII 12

Alan and grandson Noah “fishing” and we like to think that our parents would be happy seeing the work that we do, carrying on where they left off.”

Alan also maintains a passion for classic cars. He says, “We had a very nice Jaguar XK8 for five years and now we own a tidy Jaguar S Type. This of course has led me to being on the committee of the Manawatu Jaguar Club until recently, and we both still enjoy regular outings with like-minded Jag owners.”

In regard to retirement, he quips, “I still haven’t worked that one out!

“These days, I work mornings only and that works fine for me. I still enjoy relatively good health.

We have three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren living with their parents in Brisbane.

“Right now, I only anticipate retiring from my trade when someone makes me the right offer. I am not holding my breath in the meantime.” newzealandprinter.co.nz

Brand new venue: Te Pae will welcome industry professionals to the Pride In Print Awards Gala Night on June 17 n a bubble of normality inside the insanity that is Covid and Omicron, a group of industry experts gathered recently to judge the 28th Pride In Print Awards in Auckland.

While a few had been struck down by Covid, one of them literally on the morning judging started, we still had a solid group of judges with experience across all facets of the printing industry that were ready to cast their very technical eyes over the entries.

A double hit from Covid saw the entry numbers slightly lower than last year, but this was expected and planned for.

They were impacted firstly by the lengthy lockdowns, particularly in Auckland, that saw a decrease in the amount of work produced by the industry in 2021, particularly in the retail and tourism sectors.

Secondly, when entries closed, we were at the peak of the Omicron wave and businesses were operating short-handed as staff affected by Covid were required to isolate, making it difficult to get the entries ready and processed.

But Covid hadn’t affected the quality of the entries received. They reflected the high standard we have become used to from the industry and there was no shortage of gold medals and highly commended awards made during the two days of judging. much discussion and detailed debate about the finer points of some of the entries. It is both fascinating and a continuous learning curve to see just how in-depth the judging process is.

We cannot thank these people, and the businesses they work in, enough for the time they give and the expertise they share over these two days.

As a result, we have a total of 165 gold medals to give out (along with 85 highly commended awards). There are also eight Process Winners and the 13 Category Winners that went on to contend for the overall Supreme Award.

With judging complete, preparations are now underway for the big event set for Friday June 17, with fingers crossed that we will have passed the worst of the current Omicron wave and that nothing new has appeared. We are hopeful that the traffic light setting will have moved to orange which will mean no restrictions at all on events of 500 or fewer people indoors.

However, while hoping for the best, we are also planning for the worst, and just in case this lingers a little longer we also have a rain-out day booked for Friday September 16 at the same venue so everyone can simply transfer their arrangements across to the new date.

This year the Awards Gala Dinner will be held in Christchurch at the brand new Te Pae events centre. The

venue’s stunning architecture was inspired by the weaving rivers of Canterbury, and it stands as a statement piece in the middle of the city. We are excited to be back in the centre of Christchurch and for those of you still scarred by the last time it was in Christchurch we can assure you that it will not be a repeat of the pub with no beer.

We also use the glamour of this special occasion to celebrate not just the work that our industry produces, but also the people that produce it. One of the highlights of my role, of which there are many, is seeing our Apprentice of the Year category winners on stage, and one of them being named the Print Apprentice of the Year. It is such a special moment for them all to have their achievements recognised in front of a large representation of the industry.

We also recognise the Trainer of the Year and Company of the Year and the enormous effort that they put into training and ensuring that our industry has the skilled workforce it needs in the future.

I encourage you all to attend this event. The theme is ‘Printed In New Zealand’ and whether you have entries in or not, we are all there to celebrate the incredible diverse, innovative and award winning work that our industry prints right here in New Zealand.

Graphic Print & Sign changes up with a new Versant 3100i

pper Hutt-based Graphic Print & Sign has installed a Versant 3100i digital production press, supplied through Fujifilm Business Innovation.

Directors Wayne and Janine Dalton own the business, which Wayne started in 2004.

Janine says, “Wayne has been in the printing industry since doing an apprenticeship in photolithography, and I joined him full time five years ago to run the Versant 180 and look after the administration side of the business.

“The Versant 3100i replaces our previous digital printer, a now five-year-old Versant 180.

We went through an evaluation process of two models: the new Versant 180i and the 3100i. As we do a wide range of printed work, we needed a versatile machine so we chose the 3100i.

“The Versant 3100i prints faster and the advantages that the newer technology brings played a major part during our evaluation process.

“One of the bespoke manuals we make has six different parts to it and is printed on a number of different stocks such as NCR and 660 long stock with different finishing requirements such has creasing, perforating and laminating before being assembled and saddle stitched.

“The Versant 3100i makes this work easier and it takes less time. For example, the 660 stock section we run for this manual is quite demanding; it needs accuracy to get the alignment right to ensure the folds are right.

“Also, it will automatically duplex the long stop, which is another reason we installed it, along with the air suction paper feeding technology.

“The superior feeding technology helps us most when we are doing something like NCR books where accurate paper feeding from different bins is crucial.

“It also means less waste which is good for everyone.

These features make life that much easier. We had the functionality of the

“Size-wise, it is not that much bigger than the Versant 180, so we only had to rejig the workshop slightly to accommodate it.”

“Our philosophy is that if our client wants it, we will do it. We don’t limit ourselves with what we do. We know there is always a way to do the job, we just have to find it. That makes the work interesting. The out of the ordinary jobs and the curve balls they throw at us make the work more challenging and interesting. I believe that as long as a job can go through the printer, I will print it.”

Janine says, “For us, it means keeping the machine ticking and getting a good response.

When we call them, someone gets here quickly.

Janine and Wayne are looking to bring on more staff as necessary. She says, “The Versant 3100i is here to stay and eventually we will need a bigger site. We love to work locally; a lot of our client base is in the area and we have a good street presence right now so when we find the right space we will know what it is.

Meanwhile, we are enjoying what we do.

“I love dealing with people and I love to have a chat.

Often, people will just pop in to say, ‘Hello’; we are not just a supplier. The interaction with our clients (new and existing) is great and we get a kick out of delivering quality products to them.” newzealandprinter.co.nz

Late last year, the company installed a Konica Minolta AccurioPress C6100. Clint Knapton, manager at KMG, says, “We needed to replace our old digital production press.

Five plus years is a long time for a productive digital press in today’s age. The technology out there for the on demand print stuff is quite amazing and we needed to either move with it or get left behind.

KMG faces specific challenges but its distance from the main centres isn’t one of them. He says, “Funnily enough, being in Thames has its advantages. Courier services still operate with next day deliveries and we don’t have the mass traffic to deal with getting out and about.

Printopia celebrates traditional print with a contemporary vibe

O

rganisers say a new festival called Printopia, set down for May 7-8, will appeal to all kinds of “print junkies”.

Ina Arraoui, Printopia festival director, “Whether you are a creator, collector or simply an admirer of print, this is for you. Printopia is Auckland’s inaugural festival of original print, celebrating traditional and contemporary printmaking processes.”

Print artistry The festival takes place at the Corban Estate Arts Centre in Auckland. She says, “Over the two days, you can catch an exciting line up of live printmaking demonstrations, artist talks, a print fair, and workshops. You can meet the printers and artists, learn about the process, try it yourself, and buy some original prints.

“The festival will feature some of the best established and emerging print artists in the country with an outstanding array of techniques to inspire visitors.”

Ina says, “You can see print demos and discover tips and tricks of traditional methods such as paper marbling from master printer John Pusateri of Auckland Print Studio and the best tissue paper to use for chine collè with Alexis Neal, a regular tutor at Brown School of Art. “Or you can learn how to transform your used milk cartons into beautiful Tetrapak prints with Auckland artist Anita Mudaliar.

“From Wellington, Tim Li will give the audience an insight into Gyotaku – the traditional Japanese art of printing directly from fish species. Also, you can see how two different artists approach screen-printing with Toni Mosley from Auckland and Paora Tiatoa from Matakana Island in Tauranga.

“You can have a go at pulling a squeegee, rolling a brayer, and inking up a plate or two in our free Print Lab. This is where you’ll have the opportunity to 18

These live printing events will be led by master letterpress machinist Graham Judd of Inkiana Press in Auckland; screenprint legend Thomas Lynch of Artisan Screen Prints in Levin; and woodblock artist Hamish Oakley-Browne, director of Te Kowhai Print Studio in Whangarei.”

She continues, “During the Print Talks, visitors can meet some of the artists, learn about their approach to printmaking techniques and ask questions.

Kicking off the talks, print expert Warwick Brown will give a brief history of printmaking, describing the different types of prints, and discussing major New Zealand printmakers from the 1930s onwards. He’ll conclude by speculating on the future of printmaking in the digital age.”

Requests for courses The Printopia Festival is Ina’s brainchild. The printmaker and curator studied printmaking in Florence, Italy. After returning home in 2020, she started researching the local printmaking community, publishing interviews with artists and print studios on her website to create an online

resource and open archive.

Through her interviews, she found a lack of understanding and gallery representation of print media. There are currently no fully equipped open access print studios in Auckland, meaning printmakers have to work in isolation in home studios or in small groups, scattered across the city. For new graduates, the only options to continue in the field of printmaking are to set up their own studio or move abroad.

She says, “Since the Covid-19 pandemic, it appears that people have been more engaged with starting or developing an arts practice. Interestingly, all printmaking courses on offer in Auckland since April 2020 have sold out and there have been many requests at community art centres across Auckland to offer specialised printmaking courses, both short and long term.

“Seeing this need gave birth to the idea of Printopia, which will provide a physical space where the wider community, including art students, educators, galleries, and museums can have the opportunity to learn about contemporary printmaking in Aotearoa.

“By bringing together the printmaking community, the aim is to shine a light on the range and calibre of work that is being produced and its potential for collaboration, innovation and fostering a sense of community.”

She looks forward to the celebration of traditional and contemporary print. She concludes, “Printopia is a step towards our vision of Auckland becoming one of the leading centres for printmaking in the Asia-Pacific and globally, with a thriving contemporary printmaking scene that inspires research and innovation in the field.”

Cardy opens the door to label production

S

ince the team at Cardy began supplying label solutions, the company has had a busy time keeping up with demand.

Danny Mountain, managing director of Cardy, says, “We have the capability to provide and fully support a label printing ‘package’ for printers who want to step into labels.

The Oki Pro Series printers don’t require specially dedicated media. Steve says, “You can access numerous media options at an affordable cost and complete short run print jobs with a high mix of different labels. You don’t need to buy pre-printed label stock.

“While we recommend the Oki Pro label printers as ideal for on-demand short run printing, their duty cycle rates up to 160,000 pages per month.

Auspack has a new format for its Leaders’ Forum

Forum attendees at Auspack will have time to spend on the exhibition floor uspack 2022 takes place Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 17-20 with its Leaders’ Forum running on May 18-19.

Mark Dingley, chairman of the Australian Packaging and Processing Machinery Association (APPMA), which owns Auspack, says, “We changed the format quite a bit, and I think this has encouraged ticket sales.

“This year, we’ve deliberately created three breaks during both days of the forum, from one to 1.5 hours. As a result, people can network with others and it gives them time to visit the exhibition floor and not rush.

Vale Tony McInness – labels and packaging innovator

W

ithout doubt, the name Tony McInness is synonymous with Jenkins Group. Sadly, Tony passed away recently.

He was the loved husband of Sue and cherished father to Melissa, Cameron, and Katie and father in-law of Al, Anna and Dean. Much loved brother to Terry and his wife, Doris. He was also a hero to his grandkids Tom, Will and Ollie, Maisie, Amelia and Archie, Millie and Rosa.

We take this chance to remember Tony McInness through the words of his friend Harry Cranefield, previous chairman of Jenkins Group, who gave the eulogy at Tony’s funeral: To put Tony’s contribution into context, I need to briefly go back into history.

In 1883, Jane Elizabeth Jenkins established J E Jenkins. It originally made paper bags, but in 1925 concentrated on making chemists labels.

Sue McInness’s grandfather, John Booth Parkinson who arrived in New Zealand on the same ship as Jane Jenkins, bought the business from her during the depression in the early 1930s. In 1948, Sue’s father Tom Booth Parkinson took over the business from his father.

In 1973, Tony McInness joined his father-in-law Tom. That was almost half a century ago.

In 1983, the centenary year, Jenkins was appointed Australasian agents for Sinclair International heralding the way for fruit labelling in New Zealand and Australia. This relationship is approaching 40 years.

It is not possible to overstate the impact that Tony has had on Jenkins Group. I am told that early on, he identified that wet gummed paper labels were not the way of the future.

He therefore went about transforming the business so that it could produce pressure sensitive self-adhesive labels

Industry farewells Tony McInness

Tony McInness particularly those that can be applied at high speeds. An example being the beverage industry.

All of this required significant capital investment: • 1990 saw a move to new purpose-built premises at Mt Wellington • A year later, the company established an Australian subsidiary known as J-Tech Systems.

• In 1998, J-Tech moved to a purpose-built facility in Albury, NSW. • In 2000, it commissioned new machinery capable of printing on film, which was needed for the production of shrink sleeve labels. This formed part of a $10m plant upgrade programme.

All of this went hand in hand with the development of the Sinclair International fruit labelling business, which Tony was very closely involved in.

He travelled extensively around New Zealand and Australia building customers and relationships. He became very well known in the fresh produce packing industry.

Very few New Zealand companies have successfully ventured into Australia and one must give full credit to Tony for the success of J-Tech.

All of his hard work and foresight led to a number of remarkable successes. These included: • In 1994 the first printer in New Zealand to gain ISO9002 accreditation • In 1998 Jenkins won the Finat Worldwide Label Award for the labels provided to Fiji Water. Some

will remember the unique rectangular shaped bottles with the highly technical see through label.

• In 2005 a World Label Award for Ripesense a fruit ripeness sensor label.

This was written up in Time magazine including a display on the front cover.

Remarkable.

• In 2012 Jenkins was accredited with the BRC (International Food Safety Packaging Standard), a first for an Australasian label printer. This has since been followed up with the same accreditation for J-Tech in Australia.

Tony had considerable foresight and business acumen.

Of course, it was not a one man band but he was the driver.

He already had succession planning in mind. He had earlier appointed Trevor Bowles as the managing director and by the time that I joined in 2006, Trevor had retired from that role and had become a non-executive director. Tony Sayle had taken over the managing director role from Trevor and of course, continues in that role today.

Having people of the calibre of Trevor and Tony Sayle on board meant that Tony McInness could focus on building the Sinclair part of the business. For his part, Tony McInness remained on the board for a period and stepped down as the chairman before eventually retiring altogether.

However, right up to the last he was keenly interested in the progress of the company.

Tony’s foresight and commitment to good management and governance, has meant that unlike many family companies, there is no turmoil occasioned by the passing of the founder.

Stability has been maintained and it will be doing tomorrow exactly what it was doing yesterday.

He was the architect of the modern Jenkins Group and re-laid the foundations upon which the company continues to grow and prosper. newzealandprinter.co.nz

GSM – dedicated to creativity in print Mhairi Flett explains the initiative encouraging Gen-Z into print

ack in 2014, the team at New Zealand’s largest paper merchant BJ Ball developed GSM magazine in direct response to a perceived area of concern for the print industry: young designers appeared to be becoming more and more disconnected from print.

This new generation, Gen-Z, born between 1997 and 2012, are currently starting to enter the industry. They are the first generation to grow up on smart devices, which means they have spent significantly less time engaged with traditional books or magazines and more time looking at screens than previous generations.

To Gen-Z, print is not their default go-to for reading material. Print is simply not on their radar.

GSM, therefore, aims to connect this group, along with the existing design community, with print as a medium. The magazine does this by showcasing creative work of graphic designers and case studies of actual print jobs, by providing educational and technical articles and putting forward perspectives on environmental or industryrelated issues.

Visitors to drupa 2024 will see the full range of wide format solutions espite the wide and super wide format market having undergone a digital transition, certain analogue printing technologies, such as screen-printing, continue to complement the overall mix. In this regard, there’s clearly still so much to be explored, compared, and reviewed.

Covid-19 has changed a lot within the printing industry and many new applications, even a new category of social distancing signage, have evolved. At drupa 2024, all the key manufacturers, such as Epson, EFI, HP, Mimaki, Roland DG, Konica Minolta, and Agfa will showcase a multitude of applications and their latest developments, all aimed at driving new business opportunities for print service providers.

Predicted to reach a volume of US$11.2bn ($16.2bn) by 2025, the wide format printing market is mature, but it has certainly not yet reached its heyday.

Developments in digital technologies, starting with the first digital wide format printer introduced in 1999 and presented at drupa 2000, have since accelerated and come a long way.

Even so, for print service providers today, there are more and more new feats to be accomplished as client demand increases for more surprising and more individual means of communication; for faster turnaround; and for the creation of even more applications. You could say, in this sense, that inkjet has no limit.

While long print runs are still more viable overall on analogue machinery, they are not as popular as in former times. The digital transition means that more and more applications will become digital and this itself leads to highly specialised wide and super wide printers. Such printers can deal with traditional applications, but more interestingly they enable innovative print service providers to showcase their ability to cater for new and unexpected market niche jobs.

And most of all, to be able to viably produce short runs, personalised and customised projects, even one-offs, that help brand owners to do things not previously possible so that their branding efforts reach their full potential.

Another big growth factor in this sector is the environmental agenda. As the world tries to reduce its negative climate impact, so printer manufacturers, print service providers and moreover, the client ordering print (be it in a small or large corporation) are all considering how they can contribute to the environmental imperative. The global pandemic has accelerated these client-driven requirements.

Inks and consumables for wide and super wide printing, as well as the printers themselves, will be judged as to how well they fit into this context and into their own print shops. Some can even make forays into areas formerly covered by lithographic equipment such as solar, printed electronics, RFID and all kinds of conductive products.

Digital dreams For the digital printing community and those considering entering the large format market, it is important to understand this a market based on a myriad of applications requiring specialised know how. The list is long and varied. It includes vehicle wraps, posters, art, interior or exterior signage, point of sale, décor printing, directional signage, home furnishings, wallpapers, murals, displays, floor graphics, and customised one-off signage.

Digital printing enables cost-effective, fast turnaround of orders while at the same time offering environmentally friendly solutions with little or zero waste. It is starting to make inroads into the industrial printing sector, and it shows no sign of slowing down.

Social distancing signage as a new category within the wide format sector developed rapidly during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In many cases, it meant and still means that certain jobs had and have to be produced immediately at very short lead times, quite often with regional or individual customisation.

Those kind of jobs will continue to be in demand for some time to come as the world battles the virus.

The result is often quite astonishing as to what can be done with a wide or super wide format printer. As manufacturers listen to their clients and to advertising and marketing experts, so in turn comes the next wave in applications, all of which they will show at drupa 2024.

Stretching boundaries Even within the specific area of embellishment, such printers are stretching their own boundaries offering matt or gloss, haptic surface, spot colouring or digital embossing, cutting, and cross-cutting.

Nowadays it is no issue as many print service providers have embraced these abilities.

Within the digital wide format printing market and distinct from the printer’s own abilities, inks and consumables play a decisive role. Should it be UV or UV LED, aqueous, Latex, solvent or even pigment inks?

Here the application context and the client’s usage scenario decide what is suitable for what application.

Wide format printing encompasses roll-to-roll, rigid substrates and roll-to-sheet.

This means printing on glass, plastics, PVC, PET, cardboard, foam, forex or any other kind of board or film. You can produce so many stunning effects.

However, the biggest advantage of a wide or super wide digital printer lies is in its application versatility.

Customisation, personalisation, individualisation combined with efficiency deliver a final customer impact that conventional technologies cannot achieve.

Print service providers can explore the boundaries of what digital wide and super wide format printing can do at drupa 2024. The market is ripe for innovation, new applications and new machinery with associated technology enhancements including speed, colours, ink, and substrates.

easy to use. Basically, you tell it what you want and it figures out the details of job.

“We had two weeks training on the HP R1000, which included operation, maintenance, and software training. That was all we needed to be able to keep it running smoothly.”

The HP R1000 capabilities encourage the North Harbour Signs team’s creativity. He says, “Often, our customers have no idea of what is possible, what we can create for them. We sit them down and run through some concepts and even send them some visual options.

“What we have now, with the HP R1000, is the capability to offer them so much more. For example, we can print on glass, wood, metal, and all sorts of different substrates. Once the customers know that, they get a clearer idea of how we can help them.

“With the creative side of our work, the HP R1000 has us thinking in a different way, keeping our brains ticking over with fresh ideas and concepts.

For example, the White ink gives us so many more options; we can select which areas that have the White backing so we can make those areas ‘pop’. It opens new doors to what we can do for our customers.”

Great relationship Kerry Howard started North Harbour Signs in 1986 and has a long association with Aarque.

He says, “We go back years with Aarque, and they have

always been good for us. We have a pretty relaxed attitude and they have some ‘loose gooses’ too, so we get along well. We have always had a good relationship.”

Damo started his career with screen printing around 20 years ago. He says, “I learned the digital side of printing as it has grown so I have had the chance to indulge the creative side and work with the latest technology as it has evolved.

So, I love that the HP R1000 is great for the one-off jobs, where we can really knock something special out, rather than just 1000 sheets for an advertiser.

Recently, we did a really cool glass splash back which was an image of an old rusted Ford pick-up truck in the middle of a mid-west farm. It was massive, about 2.5m by 900mm.

“On the other hand, the HP R1000 also completes all our bread and butter jobs. We do a lot of work on it. Basically, it handles everything and nothing goes wrong with it.

“There were a couple of services where the technician came out and showed us how to make some replacements but now we can change the tanks ourselves and we don’t need to call them. With most of the alerts we get from HP, the machine can talk us through the processes and we can check a YouTube video as well.

“In this business, things are always changing. That keeps us on our toes and it is great to have the HP R1000 Latex printer and all of its capabilities.” newzealandprinter.co.nz

Computaleta celebrates 40 years

Noel Morrison helped change signage forever

S

ignwriter Noel Morrison founded Computaleta in 1982. He introduced computer cut technology to the New Zealand signage industry. Leading a revolution (but without the shooting), he played a major role in forever changing the way in which the industry designed and manufactured signage.

He also created more time and larger profits for his customers.

Today, Computaleta is still 100 per cent family-owned and a proud New Zealand company. For the past decade, Noel’s daughters Adele, Arlette, and Janene have taken up the mantle to drive the business and industry into the future.

His story is a part of signage history. It was a Sunday morning in 1981, and Noel Morrison was in his studio writing agricultural signs on the wall. With 600 letters per sign, each letter was

Each sign took five hours to produce, but it was only worth $20 to the customer. Noel was missing time with his family that weekend, and he thought, “There must be an easier way!”

He recalls, “I thought, how do I speed this process up?

“At that time, electricians had electric drills, builders had pre nail trusses, but we only had a pot of paint, a small brush, and our hands. Nothing had changed in 100 years.”

He had heard about an emerging radical technology and, within a short time, he had bought the first computer and vinyl cutter in New Zealand.

He says, “I sourced it through some contacts I had in Ireland. It predated Gerber, and they later sold that technology to them. I went in with a couple of other guys because it cost about $30,000, which was a

huge amount of money at that time.”

This new technology quickly changed how signs were made, as work could be produced in a fraction of the time, at a much lower cost.

Noel continues, “The speed at which this change occurred was phenomenal.

Those agricultural signs with 600 letters now took only 20 minutes to complete. And we still made $20. Profitability soared, and we could meet all our deadlines.”

In 1982, after Noel had taken a sourcing tour to the United States, he founded his distribution company to supply this new market, calling it Computa Leta.

The first container of Arlon 381mm coloured vinyl arrived soon after. Noel quickly moved from signwriter to sign supplier, establishing branches in Christchurch and Auckland simultaneously as newzealandprinter.co.nz

serving the signage community companies adopted this new technology with gusto. By 1987, Computaleta had secured distribution for 3M. In 1994, he established branches in Wellington and Hamilton.

The two women who helped set those branches up, Irma Turnbull and Wendy Beyer, proudly still work for the company today.

Noel says, “I am told it is unusual to find a family-owned business still owned by the same family 40 years later.

Together, we’ve created this wonderful company whose core purpose is to help our customers bring their ideas to life through signage. The future of our industry lies in the creative hands of our customers, all we do is provide the best tools for them to do it.”

Over the past two years the tools that Computaleta has added to its arsenal are quite extensive. In 2020 it took on HP hardware, and in 2021, included Summa flatbed and roll cutters and respected German lighting brand, Osram.

Noel says, “I am very thankful for the technology that got us here today, and these brands that we lead into the future are equally, if not more, exciting. We are in very good company. But I’m more grateful to those sign men and women who adopted this technology, supported us and continue to do so.

“Thank you to all our customers, past, present and future. We are looking forward to helping you continue to thrive and succeed in the decades to come.”

This has increased as Computaleta has broadened its offering. For example, the move back into hardware with its HP partnership has added another layer to Computaleta’s portfolio.

isitors to Fespa Global Print 2022 will see the launch of two new contentled features: Sustainability Spotlight and the Associations Pavilion.

Spotlight on sustainability Fespa’s Sustainability Spotlight feature encourages speciality printers to make more sustainable and environmentally conscious choices for their business.

Industry experts will provide useful, informative and actionable advice around environmental best practice.

Graphics producers and textile printers can view a wide range of material samples on display. They will learn how to produce innovative but sustainable finished products.

isitors to PacPrint will see a raft of innovative solutions on Currie Group’s stand, among them, its recently formed Sign and Display Business Unit will showcase the first regional trade show appearance of the EFI Pro 30h printer.

Paul Whitehead, business unit manager, Sign & Display at Currie Group, predicts the 3.2m printer will turn heads.

In New Zealand, we don’t have the market volumes that suit the industrial line-up, so to now be able to offer these capabilities to the commercial sector is quite a coup.”

This year, our event takes place in Queenstown, from July 6-9. This year, our conference motto is ‘Innovate, Integrate, Motivate’ and we will do everything we can to ensure that everyone who attends has a chance to connect with the concepts behind our motto.

The New Zealand signage industry has undergone a turbulent couple of years, like other sectors, dealing with the effects of a global pandemic at a local level. As the pandemic continues, we see real value in looking forward and bringing stability, engagement, training and a whole lot of networking back to our membership and industry. For us, that is just the ticket.

So this year, we want to include all of the industry, members and non-members, to come along to Queenstown and experience our inclusive and fun environment.

mbracing change is good, and so at the NZ Sign Display Awards 2022 we will be doing different and changing our familiar format of the evening.

This starts with our venue, which will be held at the Skyline in Queenstown, which perches high above the Queenstown township overlooking the mountainous land and Lake Wakatipu. Only reachable by gondola, the ride to the top take will take a few short minutes all the while you soak up the majestic views.

Once at the top, enjoy the cosy fire light ambience and the 180-degree view of the predinner drinks area before the presentations begin.

There will be no display of the Awards this year.

Logistically, we were unable to offer this due to venue restrictions. The Awards Gallery of all entries will be available for all to view in the weeks leading up to the awards evening.

We ask everyone to embrace the untraditional layout of the seating plan, as long trestle tables will be laid out over three tiered levels overlooking the floor to ceiling glass windows of the Stratosphere restaurant and presentation stage area. Screens will be placed throughout the room for those that may have obstructive views.

Our Master of Ceremonies and Entertainer for the 2022 NZ Sign Display Awards is Ben Hurley. We are over the moon to have Ben host our event as MC for the evening. Ben is one of the standout success stories of Aotearoa comedy and winner of all the major comedy awards. He has a hugely 44

rganisers of the fifth annual Total Supply and Spicers Golf Day chose Mike King’s I am Hope Foundation as the beneficiary of the tournament’s fund raising.

Held at the Pakuranga Golf Club on Friday, March 18, the Golf Day attracted a mix of industry professionals eager to play some good golf. I am Hope engages mental health development with kids at risk Each year in New Zealand, between 120 and 180 young people die by suicide and it is estimated another 3500 attempt to take their own lives. While government agencies are doing their best some young people are stuck waiting up to six months to receive the counselling they so urgently need.

I am Hope seeks to fill the gap. Mike King ONZM, comedian and New Zealander of the Year 2019, started the initiative, which promotes “positive attitudinal societal change in schools and communities up and down the country, and funds private care and counselling for young people stuck in the mud on waiting lists”.

They will also understand that having a tough time doesn’t mean they are mentally ill.
