ou know that feeling when you walk into a room with the type of energy where you can almost cut the tension with a knife? I feel like this is how the most part of the last few years has felt, and if you weren’t someone to be bothered much by the thoughts and opinions of others, in a way we’ve almost been forced to question everything we do or in most cases, what we have been able to do.

Unfortunately, we have just ridden the wild ride of two plus years where our previous targets have been somewhat sidelined and we question what we can and can’t say more than ever, to avoid saying the ‘wrong’ thing in an already polarised world. In 2022, I know many of us have tried to avoid the topic all together, if you’re like me you’ve had dinners where it’s banned – and for good reason. It’s been so nice to start to connect and speak about all the things we used to. COVID has seen the rise of the introvert and the demise of the team environment. Whether we have been running at capacity or not, the effort required to keep organisation and morale high has been draining to say the least.

This year does bring some new optimism however, and I’ll tell you why. The salvation is, as much as we’re still not happy about where we may be, we’ve learnt to live with these differences and adapt our approach to what we need to achieve. The most over used word of 2021 – ‘agility’ has been important, yes, but resilience only comes when we get used to changing the goalposts and weathering the storm. I think most of you will agree that we’ve learnt to become a lot more resilient, we’ve learnt to get the same result on less and we’ve realised what truly is real and what is not.

It’s funny how when we are so busy it’s hard to see who’s genuine and who may not be, almost as if everyone is brushed over with the same productivity behavior. In my opinion that’s also another plus of COVID, we’ve seen a side of friends, colleagues or employees we didn’t always see when the champagne was flowing and the playlist uninterrupted. We were always told not to sweat the small stuff and now more than ever, as much as it hurts, we have to consider everything five times over. We have to learn that showing up for ourselves is the most valuable part of the deal. If we don’t show up for ourselves we can’t show up for the salon team or our work mates. We’ve hopefully worked on ourselves and 2022 is a year we should all be looking to truly show up for each other.

Showing up collectively, is not something we’ve had the reliable privilege of in the last few years, but with ‘living with’ COVID now the norm and a schedule that’s starting to resemble one that once was, we are really looking forward to helping bring you a year where you will feel much more connected to those around you and no longer scared, lost or isolated from your fellow salon businesses. If you haven’t already registered for the full weekend of education in June at Hair Festival 2022, now is the time to get on board to make sure you are going to get the best out of the only weekend where all elements of hair have come together in more than three years. It’s up to you to use it to your best advantage.

I’m not just here to beat around the bush and impart the generic optimism of a ‘new year, new us’ but, the reality is, whichever way we look at it, we now have the experience to deal with what life in a pandemic throws at us, we know how to push on and you can’t put a higher value on much more than experience. It’s always important to stay optimistic but the reality is, for most of us, we’ve been through some fairly dark places in business and life, all those dark corners that often come with so much uncertainty plaguing our future.

The important thing to remember, however, despite how confusing this may still look, is we need to hold onto our valued partners and friends and spend time together as much as possible so we don’t lose sight. It’s this time that will get us out of our own heads and sharing the love of what makes us feel good. This is what Hair Festival is all about and this is what 2022 is about. Happiness is only real when shared so let’s share, our way through 2022.

JACKY CHAN WINS INAUGURAL INTERNATIONAL IMAGE AWARD THROUGH FELLOWSHIP FOR BRITISH HAIRDRESSING THE FELLOWSHIP FOR British Hairdressing celebrated 75 years and honoured a multitude of award recipients at a luncheon in London, with Australia’s own Jacky Chan from Oscar Oscar Chadstone winning the inaugural International Image Award.

Alongside a host of hairdressing luminaries, including now two-time Fellowship Hairdresser of the Year Errol Douglas MBE, Jacky’s name was added to a list of skilled award winners.

“We are aware every day of the incredible imagery and talent that is on offer around the world and we are delighted to launch our International Image Award for hairdressers to showcase their favourite images from their portfolio and enter this prestigious award,” explained Chancellor Ashleigh Hodges in launching the award.

The luncheon hosted 420 guests at The Londoner in Leicester Square, as pioneered

by Ashleigh and President Ken Picton. It included a three course meal and plenty of inspiring presentations.

“We have faced the worst, but we came out as the best,” Ken said. “What doesn’t challenge you doesn’t change you and we have embraced the changes while living by our core values.”

The event saw speeches from Chairman Barry Stephens, who honoured those the industry has lost and presented a cheque of £3,720 to the Hair & Beauty Charity for money raised through the special 2021 Yearbook, while F.A.M.E. Team leaders and hair icons Gary Hooker and Michael Young unveiled the next generation of talents.

APPEALS FOR HAIRDRESSERS TO BE ADDED TO PRIORITY MIGRATION LIST REIGNITED AS BORDER RESTRICTIONS EASE AS INTERNATIONAL BORDERS re-open for the fully vaccinated with eligible visas, the debate and appeals around the place of hairdressers on the priority migration list had been reignited.

Finding renewed media attention on sites such as SmartCompany, the timely debate adds to a longstanding request. The Australian Hairdressing Council (AHC) CEO Sandy Chong tells Styleicons that the industry body has been speaking to the government on this matter since 2019 in support of the industry.

“The AHC has actively been lobbying to the Federal and State Governments since 2019 to consider medium to long term Visas for the industry,” Sandy said. “Since the pandemic we have lost many sponsored stylists and barbers especially on the 482

Visa in the Melbourne and Sydney CBDs. Both city CBD small businesses have suffered from the effects of the lockdowns more than anywhere else. Salons with 20 staff are now down to 6. Sponsorships will help fill a dire skills gap and encourage apprenticeships for the future sustainability of our industry.”

According to Sandy, as told to SmartCompany, hairdressers have been on the National Skills Commission’s shortage list for two decades but still aren’t on the priority migration skilled occupation list.

Job types on the list include engineers, pharmacists, nurses, accountants, programmers, social workers and chefs, as based on advice from the National Skills Commission. The system is facilitated by employer-sponsored nomination and

individual visa applications through which visas can be fast-tracked.

The visa holders who will be able to make use of the re-opened borders include international students, working holidaymakers, temporary work (skilled) visa holders, temporary skill shortage visa holders and other provisional visa holders.

Border restrictions will also depend on country of origin, for which various locations are becoming increasingly eligible, and the state of destination, which may still require quarantine.

Industry groups such as the AHC and the Australian Retailers Association have appealed to the federal government to include hair and beauty skills in this list to fill the senior skills gap, which can’t be fully satisfied through apprenticeship programs.

Which ‘Plex are you using?

AUSTRALIAN HAIR INDUSTRY AWARDS (CREATIVE) ALTER ENTRY PROCESS DUE TO THE ongoing difficulties of COVID, and isolation rules that make organising a shoot just that much more difficult, the entry deadline for the Australian Hair Industry Awards (Creative) has been extended by four weeks to April 11 2022.

The change has triggered adjustments to the judging process as well, streamlining the system into one round of judging rather than two, which means all entrants now need to complete a written submission with their entered photographic submission.

Beyond the two-part system, the judging process will otherwise remain the same.

An international panel of judges will only see photographic entries anonymously, while the written submission panel

will only see a group shot and the nonanonymous written content.

Importantly, entrants are encouraged to re-download any documents, including rules, regulations and entry material, as the most recent documents include this update with the correct information and necessary content for submissions. Additionally, the awards period has now been extended to cover shoots and activity between March 2021 and April 2022.

INTERCOIFFURE AUSTRALIA REVEALS 2022 PROGRAM HAIRDRESSING FELLOWSHIP INTERCOIFFURE Australia has unveiled plans for a revamped, comprehensive calendar for 2022, with a program that incorporates business and creative development for junior and senior hairdressers, as well as business owners.

There are big changes with Intercoiffure including new President Jas Jhally of Jas International, Perth and a new board.

With this updated personnel, the program will include the second annual G.O.A.T. competition for apprentices, which fuses social media skills and creative work, and format entries via Instagram Reels for the first time. The competition is open from Tuesday, February 1 with uploading open from February 16 to 22 and winners to be announced at the Fashion Directors and Chairperson’s Forum in Canberra on March 6.

Other events will include business and creative education for local salon owners in Griffith, NSW, presented by National Fashion Director Terrina Brown and hosted

by Board Member Alison Matthews.

Another focus will be the annual ‘Highlights’ collection, which will be shared with global hairdressing media in April to elevate the platform of the group, and the national Intercoiffure Photographic competition, which will now expand its geographic limitations through Oceania.

Other important events include the traditional Australian National Congress in October. More activities centred on young hairdressers are also on the cards, with an updated Intercoiffure Australia website to be launched and an updated logo also in development.

nnounced early hours Australia time on December 14 2021, the international L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy Awards took place and Australia’s very own Massimo Tirimacco did the Nation extremely proud by taking home the global title!

Presented in Paris as part of the highly anticipated Run Le Hair Show, the result was streamed live. Massimo, his team and supporters waited for the announcement and then celebrated at his Zohair Salon in South Australia. The competition continues to propel global talent and identify its leaders and innovators, with Massimo clearly at the forefront.

2021 saw the Style & Colour Trophy platform go truly online with a fan vote component. Massimo was awarded the gold medal in the overall awards, while second place went to Kyle Lambert from Canada and third to Erica Keelan from United States of America. The audience award was given to Irina Bykovskaya from Russia.

In this historic awards event, which began in 1954 and is the longest-running hair competition in the world, Australia’s accolades speak for themselves. Massimo joins 2019 global winner, Wendy Gunn from Ink for Hair in Brisbane, in the winners circle, meaning Australia now has the last two consecutive global titles under our belts.

The 2021 iteration of the competition was centred on the aesthetic theme of French Balayage. Massimo competed with eight other national finalists selected from 29 countries of national victors, with the final round also seeing representatives from Canada, France, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia and the United States.

L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy represents true hair stardom, putting hair artistry under a global microscope and heralding the winners on the international stage. Massimo winning is a huge achievement for himself, his salon and the Australian hair industry at large.

We spoke to Massimo about what the win means to him.

INSTYLE: How did it feel to win L’Oréal Professionnel International Style & Colour Trophy?

MASSIMO TIRIMACCO: It is such an honour to win the L’Oréal Professionnel International Style & Colour Trophy! This is such a prestigious accolade, the longest running hairdressing competition in the world and to be named champion is just phenomenal. This had been a goal of mine since I started hairdressing, to

be honoured twice within Australia and now the International award - I am so grateful. The support I have received from the industry and, more closely, my L’Oréal Professionnel family has been amazing.

IN: What does it mean for your career?

MT: I feel propelled by this opportunity - I feel so elevated, it has given me a new pathway - given me the confidence that I have never had before to educate, speak and share these experiences.

I feel like I have grown the most I ever have in such a small amount of time, not only as an artist, but as a business owner.

To see my staff are encouraged and inspired by this to start their own journey and enter Style & Colour Trophy has been such a rewarding aspect. I cannot wait to be educating, sharing my passion and inspiring artists to push their own Style & Colour Trophy journey.

IN: What inspired your look?

MT: This look is inspired by warm, neutral tones for colour - I wanted this to emulate gorgeous, natural, lived in hair. I wanted to create a look that makes women feel confident to wear short hair with a beautiful colour. A major inspiration for this was Australian icon, Lara Wothington (Bingle) - she is the ultimate muse for effortless luxury style and this haircut suits her face perfectly.

This is what I wanted to recreate and translate into the salon - luxury lived in hair! This look is so fashionable and matches perfectly with an oversized blazer, even on your most casual days with trackies. This hair paired with a boxy blazer makes everything look and feel ‘effortless Parisian chic’ - I love it!

Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy is the way to go! I have been competing since I was 17 and every time I compete, it has continued to help me grow. To be immersed working with so many creatives within the industry, the opportunities are endless. The exposure to the salon and your own work is far beyond what you can imagine.

My method has been to have a clear vision, find an amazing model that suits your vision, create the vision, find the right team. Create the trend, not follow one!

IN: What’s next for you?

MT: 2022 for me is working on my AHFA collection and hopefully be involved in judging and mentoring for the next generation of L’Oréal Professionnel Style & Colour Trophy artists! I would love to educate, encourage and inspire artists to enter the competition. Another major part will be working with my L’Oréal Professionnel family as the Australian Steampod 3.0 Ambassador! I am so excited to create beautiful content with this amazing game changing tool and share how much it has changed the way I style my clients - making the hair feel extraordinary and totally different from any other tool!

021 for the hairdressing community ended in the best possible way, with the gala event celebrating the Australian Hair Fashion Awards (AHFAs) congregating the industry near and far, celebrating immense talent and giving guests a much-needed opportunity to party after a difficult year.

22 award titles were delineated into groups of Creative, State, Product and Business categories, as well as the pinnacle Hairdresser of the Year title. Congratulations to Hairdresser of the Year Hermiz of Joey Scandizzo Salon, who took to the stage and heralded the significance of hair art to cheers from the crowd.

Many of the winners were in the room of 600, however, as is always true of current times, many celebrated in their home towns and joined via livestream, like Salon of the Year Cirlces of Hair who were partying in Western Australia, Brisbane’s Damian Gray whose shocked face took over the big screen and Adelaide’s Lauren Cooper who was joined behind the lens by her pup, a crowd favourite.

On stage, NSW/ACT Hairdresser of the Year Jordan Hone had the audience in tears as he honoured the words his father used to motivate him to persevere, as his father watched touchingly from the audience. Industry legend Natalie Anne picked up two trophies, for Digital Influencer and Transformation Stylist, and business acumen, product innovation and education were recognised as well.

Beyond so many major award highlights, the event was a welcome opportunity to have some fun. Partnering with Dyson, hair art and fashion were a focus, and the proceedings began with an awe-inspiring fashion show that collaborated with fashion titans Mariam Seddiq and Steven Khalil. The structured, bright pieces by Mariam Seddiq were complemented by Avant Garde hair fashion looks by the 2020 – 2021 FAME Team led by Lauren McCowan, while Steven Khalil’s always dreamy take on glitz and glamour was styled by editorial icon and Dyson Hair Ambassador Renya Xydis.

The important night was bookended by must-attend arrival and after parties, sponsored by Thryv and K18 respectively, where the industry finally had their chance to catch up after months of separation and let loose with some drinks and dessert.

The formal event was hosted by renowned presenter Erin Holland and treated guests to entertainment by musical powerhouse RickiLee, who had the audience out of their chairs and dancing midshow. Celebrities such as Delta Goodrem and Bachelor couple Holly Kingston and Jimmy Nicholson were in attendance and sharing on social media to support the hair industry.

Putting 2021 behind us all with a bang, the AHFAs were the exact antidote needed to lockdowns, border closures and shut salons, leading the way by highlighting the talent, camaraderie, connection and pure fun that is the hair community. On to 2022.

n November 29, 2021, the HJ’s British Hairdressing Awards announced their illustrious winners in a prestigious black tie event at Grosvenor House, at JW Marriott Hotel in London’s Park Lane, in front a renewed audience of 1400 industry members in the platform’s 37th year.

TONI&GUY HOSTED THEIR SECOND GLOBAL DIGITAL EVENT, BRINGING THE INTERNATIONAL BRAND FAMILY TOGETHER WITH INSPIRATION, FASHION AND AWARDS.

T

he inimitable international community of TONI&GUY congregated once again in the brand’s second annual global digital event, as watched by over 5000 people and which provided an inspirational and artistic showcase true to the brand’s values.

Led by the TONI&GUY International Artistic Team and partners from around the world, the event offered education and creative hair looks to inspire in a one-hour presentation, including presentations of the newest brand campaigns, as well as British Hairdressing Award inspirations and collections and the feature label.m relaunch with new product lines and a refreshed brand aesthetic.

Fashion Week was a staple, with looks from major global runways becoming features of the show, and an Avant Garde finale helped to sign off in spectacular fashion. In these endeavours, teams from Australia, China, Spain, Italy and Japan presented their looks and the intricate motivations and designs behind them.

The evening also presented the TONI&GUY Global Awards, where our own Australian talents represented well.

TONI&GUY Armadale in Melbourne won the International Salon Award, and Australia’s iteration of label.m won the award for label.m Distributor of the Year.

The event began with a welcome from Global Brand Director and Owner, Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck and CEO Nigel Darwin, both of whom spoke about the power and connectivity of the TONI&GUY international family while thanking all the teams for their extreme efforts through these difficult times and looking to the future of the brand and label.m.

Global Creative Director Cos Sakkas and International Manager Eamonn Boreham kicked off the creative sessions by previewing the creative insights to come.

de Angelis and Siobhan Haug introduced the 2021 brand campaign, Immersion, which subsequently launched in January 2022 and celebrates TONI&GUY’s heritage, fashion DNA and education ethos, while pointing to current trends. The aesthetic includes shapes, textures and tones created by the brand’s signature techniques and that are relevant to the salon, with the ability to tailor them to various clients as Immersion celebrates diversity and individuality.

Next, International Artistic Directors Philipp Haug and Stuart Matuska introduced the academy education and creative campaign, titled Co-Lab, which fuses every session aspect, from makeup to photography, to truly portray the creative process, merging six individual British Hairdressing Award collections by the International Artistic Team to spread the message of unity in individual talent.

After this, Cos and International Technical Education Director Jo O’Neill showed off the new label.m campaign, named label.less, offering insights into its focus points of individual beauty with a premium feel, self-expression and high quality hair. Natural and golden tones in the hair and styling and a sense of high fashion define the aesthetic of the campaign.

The event finale culminated in the Avant Garde presentation of the British Hairdressing Award collection by International Artistic Director, Efi Davies, ending the night on an awe-inspiring aesthetic high.

Continuing to inspire globally and through the screen in these circumstances, TONI&GUY’s impact continues to adapt and stay ever-present, as solidified by the sophomore global digital event.

pening the mind about what it means to be a man, Melbourne’s Men+Co Barber Shop was the ultimate collaborate space for a night that broke down the walls of discussion and celebrated the freedom and individuality we are breaking down as men in 2021 and 2022.

On Monday November 29, the intimate event of approximately 30 guests – key influencers, panellists and industry personnel – made for eclectic conversations of old and new values but most importantly a mutual understanding of the need to be authentic in a new era of male grooming. While intimate and highly personal, the platform of MASC allowed guests to have true conversations with all other guests but, through the powers of digital, also opened it up to the wider industry. American Crew Australia Instagram followers were afforded the invaluable opportunity to join the panel discussion from 8:30pm via @americancrewoz. Art and digital installations added to the ambiance of creativity and freedom of the night where both the ideas around societal boundaries and intimacy were palpable.

Despite varying opinions across the globe and a common default back to traditional values of what being a man means, the event celebrated the fact that we no longer are perceived as less masculine if we dress more feminine. We are finally acknowledging just how long we’ve allowed stereotypes to outweigh celebrating true expression and individuality, and a global movement is already imminent.

American Crew as a global brand has, for the last few years, begun their journey to change this perception of the modern man through not just the aesthetic but also the conversations we are having with men and the type of men they are engaging with their brand. Where once you’d never see long hair and feminine silhouettes grace the screens or pages of American Crew editorials,

in recent years we’ve seen a definite shift away from the American Crew jock as a main point of interest to masculinity through many forms and cultures.

“At American Crew we have been the official supplier to men for decades and as men change so must we,” said American Crew Australia Marketing Director, Cristobal De La Rubia. “As we all know, the perception of Masculinity has been changing through the years, especially in the last few. With cocktails via Batch & Bottle, food, music and lots of true connection, men from across Melbourne and interstate discussed creativity, empowerment and what truly drives them.

Joined via a video stream from American Crew Founder and true visionary David Raccuglia, David discussed, from a global standpoint, how American Crew is on board with a new frontier for masculinity internationally.

In discussing true diversity and accepting masculinity beyond the social norm, guests entered with an open mind and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

The illustrious panel include Shayne Tino, the renowned Melbourne fashion designer and progressive influencer with a gender neutral fashion brand, Stephanie Pfalzgraf, winner of the American Crew All Star Challenge 2021 and King’s Domain Barber who challenges masculinity through men’s hair styles, Gary McKenzie, who is considered to be one of Melbourne’s best hairdressers, and the owner of Meddler salon in South Yarra, and Colin Allingham, owner of Sweeney Todd’s, one of Melbourne’s most well-known premium barbershop brands.

Within this panel, Shayne was the perfect ambassador for challenging the status quo of how not only we see men, but also men’s fashion and interpersonal relationships between men. With Carla Bond, American Crew Business Development Manager, as the emcee, she encouraged open conversation across each guest’s individual strengths, resulting in a night of enlightenment and approachability.

The night also paid respect to our indigenous heritage through the food, with Mabu Mabu catering the event. Mabu Mabu is Melbourne’s first indigenous owned restaurant that dishes up experimental food made from native ingredients.

In typical American Crew fashion, the gift bags were plentiful and full of American Crew cult favourites and staples, giving plenty of content for influencers in attendance to ‘gram and post about even after the night.

Asking the question about what masculinity means to you can be quite confronting but through a diversity of talent, including women on the panel, the sentiment in the room and more braodly for the brand is that we are all one and the same and masculinity can be whatever it means to be the most confident versions of ourselves.

THE INAUGURAL AUSTRALIAN Modern Barber Awards (AMBAs) took place online on December 5, with those in the men’s hair industry watching on livestream from around the country to see the 2021 winners announced. The AMBAs were launched to provide a benchmark in men’s hair and highlight the innovators, creative pioneers and business leaders in the barber space.

he hair industry is devastated to learn of the passing of community icon and TONI&GUY Australia CEO Dennis Langford, who has built up the national brand over more than 25 years and leaves an indelible mark on the entire industry.

Dennis was a beloved, renowned and invaluable member of Australia’s national hair landscape and beyond. He and his brother Graham acted as co-directors of TONI&GUY Australia until Graham left the business in 2020, and Dennis took the brand to extraordinary heights in this partnership and his role as CEO. The duo were inducted into the Hair Expo Hall of Fame in 2015 for these important efforts, and Dennis’ kindness, leadership and business acumen drove the industry forward in his many years at its centre.

Tributes for Dennis across the industry have spoken about his mentorship and friendship to so many in the hairdressing community. He was a prolific mentor to many leading educators and business owners in the industry, many citing that they wouldn’t be where they are today without his support and expertise. Additionally, he was a dedicated supporter and partner to INSTYLE over more than 25 years of our 35 years of publication, for which we are eternally grateful.

“It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of hairdressing great and CEO of TONI&GUY Australia, Dennis Langford,” said a statement from the brand. “Dennis’ long-standing dedication and passion for hairdressing has revolutionised the Australian hairdressing community. y now you’ve probably watched Lady Gaga on screen in the primary role of Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci. Behind her hair looks on the imperatively stylish film were Joico and Frederic Aspiras, the star’s personal hairdresser, who was recruited to add the requisite dose of luxe to the film’s hair brief.

The hair looks through the film travelled from the 70s to the 90s, with various looks rooted in fashion history and stylistic detail, which showcased the character of Patrizia beyond Lady Gaga’s own star power.

“I had to be as authentic as possible by using the exact techniques as a hairdresser of the 1970s - wet-set rolls, back-combing, French lacing, spiral perms, you name it. It was done exactly from that era,” Frederic said, explaining that a lack of early images of Patrizia caused him to delve deep into Italian style for broader inspiration.

“I wanted the texture, I wanted the vibe, I wanted the feel, the way it moved because it needed to transport you to that time.”

Special guests were invited to an evening at the London West Hollywood in Beverly Hills, which hosted a welcome reception and red carpet, a first look screening of the film and a Q & A with Frederic to explain his vision and inspiration behind the styles.

The film included over 55 looks and ten hero wigs, while Lady Gaga had her usually platinum blonde hair coloured brown for additional authenticity, and then taken back to platinum blonde for the following press tour. In this complicated process, Joico care and colour products were essential for hair aesthetic and quality.

Iconic looks in the film began with the Young Patrizia style, highlighted with the BlondeLife Hyper Highlift Permanent 38 INSTYLE

Creme Color, coloured with LumiShine and prepped and cared for with the Defy Damage range. In style, classic rollers set with JoiGel Medium Styling Gel were brushed out with a boar bristle brush, anchored by a soft side part. The style also used rollers and Joico’s hero styling products.

Another hero look was a shoulder length layer bob with a Spiral Perm, coloured with Joico technology, styled as gentle towel blot curls and defined with Joico tools such as JoiWhip Design Foam, then dried with a diffuser. Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Hair Spray finished the look.

A fourth important look was the Short Bi-Level Feathered Haircut, also coloured and maintained with Joico products, while styling tools included Dream Blowout, PowerWhip Whipped Foam, Joico Rise Up Powder Spray and Joico Flip Turn Volumizing Hair to blowdry up away from the face, offer light texture and create feathered lines in the hair for a strong 80s style. The ‘Power 90s Blowout’ hero look used similar tools, as well as the Joico Heat Hero Glossing Thermal Protector for barrel curls and volume.

lite Artistry often associated with a ‘one off’ piece has moved into the building sector via artisan design unlike any development we’ve yet seen with the creation of ‘Glasshouse’. Sourcing the world’s finest natural materials, local artisans and generations of skilled hands have produced an aesthetic that will envision just three impossibly beautiful residences all born from the unique natural environment of the Burleigh headland.

With the tagline ‘impossibly created’, Glasshouse brings new meaning to somewhat impossibly elitist design, to create something truly unique, it’s not just about rare materials but a unique approach to the surroundings in which it resides. Using light and glass to open the outside world to an interior world of timeless life-lasting finishes, Glasshouse is the culmination of tireless years spent dedicated to the importance of place. The position of this impossible project is intrinsic in what makes it one completely beyond compare. Three glass ‘homes’ positioned perfectly on a land parcel that holds the most acclaimed beachfront status in Queensland. To create here is a privilege, and for Spyre Group it forms a legacy in their design portfolio that is, seemingly, unmatched.

Designed by acclaimed architecture firm Bureau Proberts, their vision with Glasshouse was to create a sense of custom design not to be repeated.

“Our brief was to create the impossible and this remarkable stretch of beachfront gave us astonishing design possibilities.

We’ve brought something stridently new to Burleigh Heads. These are not just luxury homes, they are hyper-luxury residences.

There’s nothing ‘routine’ about these spaces,” said Bureau Proberts Project Design Leader Dan Liddy.

Glasshouse can be likened to a jewel-like building with its rippling surface of fluted glass an expression of the natural landscape, suspended between the rugged headland and ocean. The materials are custom blended and almost seemingly ‘pulled’ from the natural landscape surrounding the project.

The interiors are lavished with stone finishes whose beauty has formed deep in the earth over millions of years, the artistry of lights blown by hand by SØKTAS and the technical brilliance of the engineered glass that gives Glasshouse Burleigh its name.

Each angle from however you look, whether within or externally, completely immerses residents in the atmospheric

coastal landscape using glass. Its crystalline expression, crafted from fluted glass and sculpted concrete, reflects the infinite expanse of the glassy ocean and the rippling tides.

“The brief for Glasshouse Burleigh’s glass was no compromise and pushing the envelope more. There’s a lot of work involved in teasing out the tolerances for large spans of glass, but you can do almost anything if you don’t scrimp, ” said Sherard Northey, The Project’s Glass Engineer.

The glass frames some of the most impressive stone design works we’ve seen, and for Scott and his team of stonemasons creating the truly memorable materials within. Glasshouse Burleigh has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to showcase their creativity and craft at an unprecedented level. Employing highly skilled, generational stonemasons from Spain, the impossibly beautiful marble forms that grace the kitchen islands and remarkable bathroom vanities take many hours of work to complete, almost as if they are etched into the coastal landscape itself.

Each piece is a work of art, hewn by hand and inspired by the ancient rocky outcrops of the surrounding headland. Shaping such dramatic marble forms like those seen at Glasshouse Burleigh demands passion, imagination and a sure artisan’s eye for detail.

“Nothing says opulence or grandeur more than marble, and our work here at Glasshouse will take our craft to unseen levels. The elevation of typical masonry work to create what will be a true centrepiece to these homes is a truly special and professionally rewarding experience,” shared Scott Redhead, Stone Development.

SØKTAS Lighting designers are becoming a household name in the luxury development fold, having collaborated on some truly impressive lighting designs for Glasshouse.

The beauty of Swedish native Oliver Höglund’s hand blown glass is enthralling and energetic, in a craft that has been passed down through generations.

The silica sand used to produce glass for a SØKTAS design is sourced from Sweden due its clarity. Working the runny honeylike glass at temperatures of 1000°C, Oliver shapes his distinctive curved glass free-form using his artisan’s eye, hand and feel to sculpt each piece.

Lighting up the space naturally and through the creations of SØKTAS was an important consideration in the tones used in stonework - Fior Di Bosco, or Flowers of the Forest, is a precious pearl grey marble woven with fossils, silver white and warm amber veins. It is quarried near Suvereto on the small rocky height of Monte Peloso, 100KM south of the Tuscan city of Carrara. Founded

by Lorenzo D’Aloisio in 1960, the quarry’s Fior Di Bosco stone is highly sought-after in Europe due to its limited production, beautiful veining and distinct colouration.

Even when it comes to the tiles used for Glasshouse, sustainability is at the heart of everything and The EARP Brothers have ensured only the finest materials with a conscience have been added to this development.

DIIOR10 DIIOR10’S SALON RENOVATION IS ABOUT MORE THAN JUST AESTHETIC, WITH BUSINESS DETAILS, SUSTAINABLE PARTNERSHIPS AND A FRESH APPROACH TO CLIENT CARE BRINGING IN A NEW PHASE FOR THE SALON, WRITES SHANNON GUSS.

ydney’s Diior10 salon had a renovation planned prelockdown, and executed it within these difficulties and with an optimism that always saw the glass as half full.

The renovation is part of a major overhaul of the whole salon, which will be anchored by renewed business models and approaches.

“Whilst the renovation was pre-planned before the lockdown arrived, having the extra time enabled me to execute the redesign and restructure of our brand and salon with that little more attention to detail,” salon owner Daniel Di Iorio said of the lockdown renovation, explaining the extra effort he’s put into the salon as a whole. “I’ve been busy developing business model changes to suit our ever changing industry landscape. Beyond this, a new website is being built and there’s possibly a re-brand in the near future too.”

The new approach is detailed in a series-long video campaign, which point to these important new salon aspects, such as a Comfort Menu with specific, luxury details for clients, a Consultation Bar that puts the emphasis on this service and the Shampoo Lounge with a privacy screen and new treatment menu with additions such as a hot towel service for ultimate relaxation.

The refresh also pushes forward new ideals and focuses for the salon.

“The salon for years has been recognised within our community as one that has been strong in cutting, particularly men’s hair due to my background, however my motives with the new salon design are to welcome more of a feminine feel in a bid to help add some shine on our ability to achieve beautiful colour work,” Daniel said.

The renovation and new salon era for Diior10 promises to be a true game-changer in aesthetic and ideals, for clients and employees alike.

With free reign on the entire house, a stay at Ser can be as formal or informal as you like, plus the expansive surrounds and gardens are the perfect location for a dreamy shoot or production – the story of a stay here promises an experience that lives well up to its name. There is a discovery at every turn and in case you’re wondering about the name, the meandering abode was named after one of Wilde’s books, The Infinite Self. The property is brimming with the fruits of the spiritualist’s imagination, brought to life via a wealth of authentic fixtures and bespoke craftsmanship peppered throughout its three levels of luxury.

Features include a bar complete with a butler for cocktails, a garden marquee, private chef, dinners, an in-house spa and treatment area, a Japanese bathhouse and an eight-person sauna.

You’d think the pool would pale in comparison, but it’s as equally as impressive, with a rooftop position that has the best views in the house – or above the house so to speak.

As if that were not enough to pique interest, there are also several ‘hidden’ rooms and cubbie-house-like spaces, all sure to delight adults and children alike. Simply stepping inside Ser Infinito is something to behold. The impressive interior reveals rich timber beams that contrast with stark white walls. Even the rock platform on which the residence is built is incorporated artistically in parts and a kids escape has a bunk bed made from solid timber beams, almost as if it were part of the house.

Every detail displays Wilde’s great love of all things Santa Fe and New Mexico where most fixtures were made – from the handmade sinks in all bathrooms to around 30,000 magnificently crafted decorative tiles, some of which even bear the paw prints of coyotes, allowed to wander across them as they set during the build, showcasing a creation of true artisanal proportions.

Kitchen cupboards of Oregon wood were lovingly carved by Wilde’s family members and other fixtures from Sante Fe including oak, while door handles and light switch covers handmade in New Mexico feature throughout. Details and space are luxuries that don’t always go hand in hand, at Ser Infinito you can find a perfect nook for sunbaking or reading alone, a gym to work out in with your friends or a communal table so big it had to be made within the residence, if you want to learn about custom detailing, a stay at Ser is essential.

Lake Conjola is a 15 minute drive away, private fishing or dolphin watching may well be the idyllic backdrop but, then again, you may choose to simply remain ensconced within the extraordinary haven that is Ser Infinito Estate – a creation that stands alone among the world of luxury escapes, a never-tobe-repeated property that must be experienced at least once in a lifetime.

espite lockdowns, uncertainty and hiccups with a completely new refit, Wellness Playground pushed on and opened by the last quarter of a tumultuous 2021. The facility that conjures up the atmosphere of a health spa and not a gym, offers all the typical high-intensity fitness offerings within an oasis of yoga, dance, pilates, reformer and barre studios and experiences, plus infrared saunas, calming hangout spaces, luxe bathrooms and powder room. It’s safe to say Wellness Playground has changed the game when it comes to fitness.

“Each of the spaces are curated around experience and even a scent that’s specific to the objective of the space. The Yoga studio is dark and oversized, the dwell areas are light and luxurious - conducive to the best practice in the wellness space,” Justin said.

Apart from the cohesive and welcoming minimalist entrance and common hallways, you’d be forgiven for thinking each of the spaces is a completely different venue – the dance studio is deliberately at the back with no natural light with a real ‘nightclub at 3am feel’ but it’s the sense of escapism and the experience of the class or zone being intrinsically matched to the architecture that makes this space so unique.

“When designing this gym concept, we looked at other spaces we enjoy being in – how do we create a place where we could spend time, not just wanting to go there but also a place you genuinely look forward to going out to?” Justin said.

The space creates a softness not often achievable in gyms, with curved concrete rendered walls and polished concrete

floors. The materials are often not the focus in an exercise driven environment.

“Jumping on the computer, catching up on some work or dwell time. That’s what’s missing in a regular gym. Generally we wanted to design a space that’s beautiful and doesn’t look like a gym, but more like an exclusive spa,” Justin said.

“The future of fitness and wellness is all about going somewhere we enjoy and having the resources to feel well and not just work out,” he said.

For the build, Justin and co-founder Serra Burmin took inspiration from the natural environments where you wouldn’t usually expect a natural aesthetic.

Rendered walls with a warming feeling and no harsh corners are more common in relaxed spaces and not a fitness facility – it immediately feels comfortable due to the curvature and flow of the space.

No expense was spared even on the walls. Typically the wall would be rendered then painted but this time it was

colour mixed render for depth and quality of finish. It radiates a soft pink and brown depth of undertone, and doesn’t look like just a colour that you get from paint alone.

Adding to this vibe, the lighting changes depending on the time of the day.

Transformed from an old tacky two dollar shop and an opening scheduled for July 3 just a week after a three month lockdown began, it was a challenging time and the delay to reveal the space to a somewhat post-lockdown Sydney couldn’t come quick enough.

The playground is smattered with sexy statement pieces from lighting to lush details and it’s the little things that give it warmth and create a sense of escapism.

“We had to waste real estate to enhance experience. We could have added another studio without so much dwell space but we would have compromised the overall aesthetic,” Justin said.

The build didn’t come without challenges, the premises was leaking halfway through the build and the stormwater started to flood – they had to dig up the floor and re-do it. They went over budget to get it right but the experience was something that couldn’t be compromised.

“We had a clear vision of what we were trying to achieve – we had this idea to go or in and then scale back but by the time the design came to life we found it very difficult to eliminate things. We just had to grit our teeth and hope for the best,” Justin said.

Ultimately, the final result was double the expenditure of what was originally proposed but it’s the positive feedback that by far outweighs this concern. Real terrazzo and micro cement floor are all expensive features, even just using tiles

instead of micro cement would have saved more than $150K, according to Justin.

With any experiential space it’s also important not to forget the core values of your brand. Wellness Playground is still a gym business, a people business and an experience business and over the last few years has started to morph into an education business.

“We already educated fitness professionals, broached virtual fitness and now we’ve covered wellness,” Justin said.

With a new Zetland gym coming soon and a continued focus on people and experience, wellness will continue to be key to the future of the Fitness Playground fold. It will also become a brand of leading experts supporting this overall cause and concept.

Having recently won Young Entrepreneurs of the Year for the National Business News Awards, is testament to this achievement and growth trajectory that’s far from over.

That’s all in addition to Fitness Playground’s existing Marrickville gym, which is a level upstairs from the new Wellness space. The upstairs high-intensity gym offers high-energy classes, equipment and spaces, including the Battleground group-training studio, an immersive spin studio, cardio area and free weights. In total, there are five studios, 200 classes a week, spanning 2,200sqm of gym, in what is expected to house well over 5,000 members.

In an industry that is being dominated by single-service offerings, creating a Wellness “playground” where all experiences are housed under one roof is going against current trends.

Through the corridor and down to the back is a hanging garden courtyard inspired by Palm Springs.

“It’s a creative, feminine, fun and most of all welcoming space, my inspiration evolved over time and I started focusing on mood boards for each space in the salon. Soon the salon was filled up with plants and variations of shape and shades of pink with the Palm Springs courtyard vibe to follow,” Ash said.

Ash has come a long way from her mood boards and inspiration, now laughing at her original vision for The Salon being “two chairs and then a processing table”. Now, you’ll find an array of pleasing architectural visuals from the gold finishes, arched mirrors, pink 62 INSTYLE

epoxy floors, Italian sourced (and of course painted pink) light fixtures, and beautiful hanging plants and internal gardens in the spa area. In the courtyard, a custom made pink table boasting red metal and vibrant pink leather is a statement piece.

Designing The Salon came with its challenges. “The biggest challenge was that we were still open for business while renovating, so the front of The Salon was done and then they did the back and joined the spaces together and, of course, the job ran months late over Christmas last year,” Ash explained.

In the past two years, Ash has done two renovations and one expansion and, as most renovation projects do, the project “went

over budget, but I couldn’t say no to some of the amazing things my interior designer found.” The Salon grew at a rapid rate “despite the pandemic making it so hard”, as many salons in the industry can attest to.

When it comes to clients, the space is meant to feel calming and a haven within which to sit back and feel recharged and escape while everything around them is being taken care of. Ash’s goal is to create a low key but luxe aesthetic that is both relaxing and fun as soon as you walk through her door. Functionality is of course at the helm of salon design, including 14 working stations and then six processing tables.

“I really knew what I wanted the space to look like but also how I could make it more functional than when I first built The Salon, it’s seamless to look at but it also has so much hidden storage,” Ash said.

Ash is always looking to improve and has plans to redo the front salon floor in the future, but is nevertheless content with the work so far. When asking Ash about her favourite aspects of The Salon, some hero pieces stand out.

“I love the lightbox archways and full-length selfie mirror, the pink edging reminds me of a dollhouse my pop made me,” she said. “The space is everything I hoped it would be. I love the space and I’ve learnt so much on the way, but I’m always thinking about what’s next.”

I love this look, it’s fun, it’s fresh, it’s flirty and it makes me want to be drinking a mimosa at a long lunch. The pink palette grabs your eye and reminds you of your favourite party dress as a little girl, although this could be why a part of me is not 100 per cent on board with this style. The colour coordination in the pink tones make it feel more like a barbie doll than high class street fashion. I would have accessorised very differently with a different coloured shoe and a more on trend mini bag. If I had a chance to change her cut and colour, I would scalp bleach this look and put in a fringe – a cool pixie fringe to accentuate the incredible face shape. I would use Redken’s Flash Lift with pH Bonder and 20 vol – and I would root shadow to leave a soft contour with 07nw SEQ and use 010p and clear on the ends SEQ. I always use Extreme Bleach Recovery on my lightening work and finish with the Extreme Length Leave-In Treatment to finish. I would put in a blunt bob and blowdry to create a bold cut and styling.

n 2022 personalised business models are paramount, as Carla soon found out when traditional apprenticeships weren’t working for her salon, triggering a push towards a school-based apprenticeship model through VERTO, which has significantly helped to grow her business.

VERTO is a community owned, not-for-profit organisation delivering a range of apprenticeship, community support, employment and training services to assist individuals, employers and industries, found in more than 40 locations across the ACT, VIC and NSW, and becoming an essential resource for salons.

“In the first year of an apprenticeship, especially in beauty, it can be hard to keep young team members motivated, and for me, it just wasn’t working out,” Carla said. “Taking on school-based apprentices is one of the best things that I’ve done for my business.

It’s been excellent, and I wouldn’t hire any other way now,” This apprenticeship model pairs vocational and salon training with high school studies from Year 10 onwards, in a part time capacity with the student’s schooling, offering a kick start towards their chosen career. For Carla, VERTO Consultant Stephen Morales introduced her to Anna, who is now in the final year of her apprenticeship, and set up every facet of the process, so Carla’s focus could remain on training and the salon itself.

“The process with VERTO was absolutely seamless and Stephen was very knowledgeable. When you are hiring students who are under 18, there are some specific requirements, additional parties involved and paperwork to be signed off. VERTO coordinated all of this for me, so it was simple,” Carla said.

The program has been so successful for the salon and Anna that Anna is now training to become a Salon Manager, a career path that she discovered during the apprenticeship, while also recently being recognised as the NSW School Based Apprentice and Trainee of the Year by TAFE NSW. “I had no hesitation in nominating Anna – she has been the perfect fit for my business,” Carla said. “Through a school-based apprenticeship, Anna has been able to balance school, TAFE studies and working one day a week in my salon – and this balance has really worked for both of us. It’s been excellent.”

VERTO have offered consistent support to Carla and her salon, aiding her through the difficulties of running a business through COVID-19 restrictions and hurdles. Stephen helped her find another school-based apprentice, Keira-Leigh, in the past year and assisted her in exploring government subsidies and incentives, to grow her salon business even through these difficult circumstances. ody Heat 2022 is the resort campaign shoot of renowned brand Hansen & Gretel, styled on set by KMS and hair director Adam Harant, Wild Life Hair SOGO Master Stylist.

The sunny campaign was shot at Alexandria’s Sun Studios, with a bright, feminine aesthetic that still has the requisite edge and a boyish accent. A sharp, uncomplicated aesthetic allows the looks to shine through.

“Hansen’s Resort collection Body Heat is an homage to the many women who are striking a balance between the fun and sophisticated through a series of exquisitely frescoed prints, tropical-hued silks and pops of floral jacquards,” said Ainsley Hansen, Founder and Creative Director of Hansen & Gretel.

“Attributing both style and substance, Body Heat echoes a purposeful air. Simmering up a hot girl’s summer with vintage florals, ombré stripes, pastel knits and luxe suiting, this tactile collection is an exploration of individuality,” she continued. “Glittering escapism ripples through Resort ‘22 where shape and

fluidity exult the female form – celebrating a woman’s continued expression of Self.”

With a cast of fresh editorial faces including models Bambi, Bakhita and Zoe, Adam created four looks for the campaign.

Look one was all about volume, and it’s no surprise the KMS ADDVOLUME Shampoo, Leave-In Conditioner and Styling Foam were hero products to strengthen, lift and condition the hair.

“This style required a directional blowdry of the hair with a VARIS Smoothing Brush, blow-drying away from the face while making sure to keep the hair flat to the head. I worked in sections, applying KMS HAIRPLAY Liquid Wax to the roots of the hair using a VARIS boar bristle brush to comb through from roots to mid lengths,” Adam said.

Look two used similar feature products for an editorial ponytail that stayed flat to the head. KMS HAIRSTAY Working Hair Spray was essential to finish with a wet look.

“I used KMS THERMASHAPE Straightening Creme working in the ponytail section and applying to the roots of the hair, then worked through with a VARIS Smoothing brush,” Adam explained. “I then tied the hair in a ponytail, separating into two sections and created two twists then looped each twist around the base of the ponytail, one after the other.”

“For the final styling touches, I carefully raked my fingers over the top of Bambi’s head to disturb some of the hair and softly

pull out sections of the bun to create texture and volume,” he continued.

Look three was prepped with KMS MOISTREPAIR Shampoo and Conditioner for a balanced curl structure, enhanced in the style.

“For Zoe, I applied KMS HAIRPLAY Sea Salt Spray to wet hair and scrunch in. I then dried the hair with a diffuser attachment on the blow dryer. Once Zoe’s hair was 80 per cent dry, working in sections, I applied KMS CURLUP Perfecting Lotion to her individual curls and twisted with my fingers. This enhanced the curl formation and lessened the frizz. Any curls that were under performing, I used a curling tong. To achieve this look, I didn’t curl the whole strand, just sections to ensure it mimicked the natural texture of Zoe’s hair,” said Adam.

The final look was prepped with KMS MOISTREPAIR Cleansing Conditioner, styled with KMS MOISTREPAIR Hydrating Oil and KMS HAIRSTAY Molding Pomade and finished with KMS HAIRSTAY Firm Finishing Hairspray. ox Hill Institute and Jobs Victoria have joined forces in an opportunity that will provide incomparable support for students and employers partaking in their new Victorian apprentice initiative.

75 salon participants will receive subsidised support when aligning with these apprentices. Student participants will obtain a Certificate III in Barbering (SHB30516) or Certificate III in Hairdressing (SHB30416) through the program.

“The industry has been hit hard during the COVID-19 pandemic so this program has been developed to support the shortage of apprentices as well as transition those experiencing difficulty into meaningful jobs,” said Box Hill Institute Executive Director of Educational Delivery, Jane Trewin.

“This program is the first of its kind in Australia, and the demand for hairdressing and barbering has never been higher, so we are pleased to be addressing the employee shortage in this way to help employers and the industry sector.”

Employers can receive a further benefit through the Federal Government’s Job Booster program, which offers a 50 per cent wage subsidy for employers registered by March 31 2022.

The new Apprenticeship Initiative will see developing hairdressers and barbers complete two weeks of pre-training before starting employment. Employers will liaise with a respected industry figure as a mentor as well as Box Hill Institute’s Head of Hair and Beauty (Industry Engagement) Ruth Browne, as part of the program. Box Hill Institute will invest in and assist each individual involved to facilitate the scheme to success.

Apprentices in the scheme will receive training conducive with the Certificate III qualification, be part of a recruitment process that aligns hairdressers and employers, and gain individual 86 INSTYLE

mentoring from Box Hill Institute at every level. The program will run an initial skills and personality assessment to identify areas for development, with opportunities to participate in an accredited micro-credentials program to fill in any gaps and will offer a myriad of master classes from industry experts. It will also offer personalised ‘Job Readiness’ training of soft skills including communication, teamwork and client care.

In the program, student course fees will be covered and they will receive additional resources including a hairdressing kit, uniforms and Pivot Point education materials. As such, each apprentice participating in the program will receive around $15,000 in value of training and support.
