here are certain moments in publishing when you are reminded that media is less about the stories and frantic deadlines, and more about the people. The purpose of what we do is built by people, by relationships, shared history, creative energy and the commitment of a team that cares deeply about what it represents. This issue takes stock of one of those moments.

It seems almost impossible, or perhaps a little anti-climactic, to mark the arrival of Issue 3 without acknowledging the departure of someone who has been such an important part of the INSTYLE story. After more than two decades working alongside Jo Cowan - 23 years, in fact - it is difficult to put into words what her contribution has meant, not only to this magazine and her 25year tenure, but to the wider hairdressing community and the many projects we have built together.

Jo has been part of an extraordinary chapter in both our industry and our media’s history.

Through changing markets, shifting media landscapes and some incredibly challenging years, she brought an unwavering belief in the importance of bringing our industry closer together. Her legacy is not simply in the stories we have written or the campaigns we have executed, but in the people she has championed and the opportunities she has helped create.

At the end of it all, we remember the people most. I couldn’t tell you the number of times, during a challenging week, that one message from someone saying they loved something we had produced or written, or told us how much they valued what we do, has been enough to keep me going. For Jo and I, in many ways, that connection to the industry has kept us challenged, engaged and invested in an industry that means a great deal to both of us. And that, ultimately, is why specialist media still matters.

In a world where everyone can publish, post and create content, there is a real difference between content and context, visibility and influence, reach and relevance. Good industry media doesn’t simply report on what is happening; it helps shape the conversation and context around it.

It gives people a platform, gives ideas credibility and our industry a place to see itself reflected back - honestly, creatively and with a sense of where it is heading.

That is something I feel particularly passionate about with INSTYLE, Styleicons and Hair Festival.

We have an incredible opportunity to not simply document our industry, but to champion it. To put a spotlight on the artists, educators, business owners, brands and ideas that deserve attention.

To create conversations that extend beyond a single post, a single issue or a single event. And, importantly, to give the people doing great work the profile and authority that comes from being properly recognised by the media their industry consumes.

Hair Festival is perhaps the greatest example of that philosophy in action, what began in a particularly challenging period for our industry has continued to evolve into one of the most significant gatherings on the Australian hair calendar. In 2026, more than 7,350 hairdressers, barbers, brands, educators and industry professionals came together at ICC Sydney - across an expanded show floor, two main stages, education, business, Wonderland and the many conversations that make Hair Festival what it is. It was a remarkable result, but more importantly, it was a reminder of what happens when our team comes together with purpose.

And so, while we farewell one chapter, we are already looking firmly towards the next, with 2027 just on the horizon. We are taking everything we learned from 2026 - the energy, the conversations, the education, the creativity and the incredible response from our community - and building on it for 2027.

There is also new energy within the team, with Melissa Hickling joining us as National Sales Manager across INSTYLE and Styleicons, bringing her own experience, perspective and enthusiasm to the business. New people bring new energy, new perspectives and, sometimes, exactly the kind of fresh thinking you need to keep moving forward. I am excited about what this next chapter will look like as we continue to evolve our brands.

I truly believe our industry will always be hungry for change, connection, education, inspiration and celebration. Our job is to keep giving it that and bringing the industry together, not dividing it.

Let’s see how we rise above the current challenges together and build together what’s next.

Because the only way to ensure you are part of what comes next is to be part of the action, not the reaction.

LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENT Australian professional haircare brand O&M has announced the appointment of industry veteran Chris Hammond as Managing Director, marking a significant step in the company’s continued global expansion.

UPFRONT AHC APPOINTMENT The Australian Hairdressing Council (AHC) has appointed Jane Barrett as Chair of its Education & Training Committee, bringing more than three decades of hairdressing experience and 15 years in education leadership to the role.

A respected industry and education leader, Barrett’s career spans teaching, education management, consulting and senior executive positions, giving her extensive experience across both professional hairdressing and the training frameworks supporting the industry’s future workforce.

Barrett is currently CEO of Pivot Point Australia & New Zealand, a position she has held since May 2020. Her history with the professional education organisation also includes roles as General Manager and National Education Consultant.

Her broader education career includes almost five years as Education Manager at Canberra Institute of Technology and nine years teaching at Chisholm Institute. She has also served as Head of Education at Beauty EDU and Communications Manager at Monash University.

Announcing the appointment, the AHC said Barrett would bring “exceptional industry knowledge, strategic insight and a genuine passion for education” to the committee.

“We are honoured to have Jane’s expertise and vision guiding the AHC’s education and training initiatives as we work to strengthen the future of our industry,” the organisation said.

Barrett said she was looking forward to helping progress the committee’s work.

“I’m both honoured and humbled to step into this role, and to lead the exciting work being undertaken by the Education & Training Committee to strengthen our industry and its future,” Barrett said.

In the role, Barrett will draw on her experience across hairdressing, vocational education, leadership and professional development as the AHC continues its focus on strengthening education, training and career pathways across Australia’s hairdressing sector.

MEET MELISSA HICKLING For Melissa Hickling, joining INSTYLE and STYLEICONS as National Sales Manager isn’t simply a move into a new role. It’s a chance to experience an industry she has spent much of her career in, and genuinely loves, from a new perspective.

With more than two decades of experience spanning professional hair, beauty and sales, Melissa brings deep industry knowledge, longstanding relationships and, importantly, a genuine affection for the community she now represents at Intermedia.

“I’ve spent many years in the professional hair industry and it’s an industry I genuinely love,” Melissa says. “The creativity, the people and, most importantly, the incredible community at

the heart of it is what makes it so special.”

Melissa succeeds Jo Cowan, who recently retired after 25 years with Intermedia, marking the end of an extraordinary chapter with INSTYLE and STYLEICONS. Jo now plans to enjoy a wellearned change of pace, including travelling and giving back through volunteer work, with plans to use her hairdressing skills to cut hair for people experiencing homelessness.

For Melissa, stepping into the role comes with a strong sense of respect for what has been built before her.

“I’m honoured to continue the legacy of INSTYLE and STYLEICONS and really looking forward to experiencing the industry from a different side,” she says.

Her career has taken her across both Australia and the United States, with senior sales roles at some of the industry’s most recognised businesses. Most recently, Melissa spent three years as National Sales Manager for Moroccanoil at Haircare Group, following more than a decade with L’Oréal across different stages of her career.

But her connection to hair goes deeper than sales. Melissa studied cosmetology at Santa Monica Cosmetology School, giving her an understanding of the salon industry from the inside, something that continues to shape the way she approaches relationships with brands, salons and professionals today.

“Using less bleach doesn’t automatically mean less risk,” he explains. “Those visible sections need to look perfect, so consultation, colour placement and maintaining the hair’s integrity are more important than ever.”

Ultimately, Johnson believes 2026 will be defined less by one dominant shade and more by personalised colour services that complement the individual.

CERTIFIED IMPACT Phorest has officially achieved B Corp Certification, marking a significant milestone for the salon, spa and clinic software company and its commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

The company joins the global community of Certified B Corporations after completing B Lab’s rigorous assessment across governance, workers, community, environment and customers, achieving an overall B Impact score of 89.

apping off two hugely successful days of Hair Festival 2026, presented by Styleicons and INSTYLE, the 2026 AHIA Creative Awards celebrated the very best of Australian and New Zealand hairdressing, recognising outstanding creative talent, collections and career achievements before a packed industry audience at Sydney’s ICC Ballroom.

Widely regarded as one of the industry’s highest creative honours, the annual awards, presented by Mocha Group, recognise excellence across cutting, colouring, editorial, photography, education and emerging talent. This year’s program attracted a record number of entries, reflecting the continued strength and innovation of the Australian and New Zealand hair industry. Entries were assessed by an international judging panel of more than 80 respected hairdressers, 22 INSTYLE

educators and media representatives, with winners announced across more than 20 categories.

Leading the night’s honours was Scott Sloan of Sloans, who was named Australian Hairdresser of the Year for 2026, recognising his exceptional creative vision and technical excellence. Across the Tasman, Danny Pato MNZM of D&M Hair Design claimed the title of New Zealand Hairdresser of the Year, while one of Australia’s most respected colour specialists, Kristie Kesic of Cobelle Creative, was awarded Master Colourist of the Year.

The evening also celebrated one of the industry’s most influential educators and mentors, with Lorna Evans inducted into the AHIA Dennis Langford Hall of Fame in recognition of her outstanding contribution to hairdressing throughout her career.

The next generation of industry talent was equally recognised, with Gemma

Koster from The Safari Room taking home Emerging Stylist of the Year, Paige Cameron of Cobelle Creative winning New Creative Talent of the Year, and Tori Yardley from TONI&GUY Newtown named Apprentice of the Year.

Editorial excellence remained a key focus of the awards, with renowned session stylist Anthony Nader awarded Editorial Hairstylist of the Year, while Krista Jade White was recognised as Editorial Make-Up Artist of the Year. Marilyn Guarino of Biba Academy received Hair Masterpiece of the Year, celebrating one of the competition’s most technically accomplished and visually striking collections.

Held during one of the busiest weekends on the Australian hair calendar, during Hair Festival, The Mane Event once again proved that our industry thrives when it comes together to celebrate. More than an awards night, it was an evening that recognised the CPR salon community as well as the artists, educators, salon teams and emerging talent who continue to push Australian hairdressing forward through imagination, technical excellence and an unwavering commitment to their craft.

With two winners announced, the curtain closed on The Mane Event for another year, with the 2026 competition showcasing more talent and boundarypushing artistry than ever before, with hairstylists from across Australia raising the bar through their colour, cutting and styling capabilities.

Created to celebrate total look, The Mane Event continues to provide a platform for the industry to showcase their creative vision, gain industry recognition, and inspire the wider hairdressing community.

Every entry demonstrated the passion, technical excellence and originality that continues to shape the future of the industry and our salon teams.

This year also welcomed a refreshed panel of highly respected industry judges, bringing together a wealth of experience and diverse creative perspectives. The judging panel featured The Bensons from USA, last year’s reigning Mane Event champion Aimee Egan, Creative Producer Adam Williams, CPR Educator Colston Roberts, salon owner and educator Steph Meyer, and styling ambassador Paula Hibbard. Together, they carefully assessed each anonymous submission, judging not only technical execution, but the overall creativity, image impact and the overall professionalism and final execution behind every submission.

Narrowed down to a top three for both categories, CPR then opened with an inclusive approach by looking to the public for voting to determine the final winners.

A huge congratulations to our two new reigning champions for 2026. Emma Grace Merrifield claimed the coveted The Mane Event title, while Maddison Spalding was crowned the winner of the ROAR Emerging Talent Award, recognising the outstanding creativity and promise of the next generation of hairdressers.

EMMA GRACE MERRIFIELD - THE MANE EVENT WINNER: Crowned the 2026 Mane Event Winner, Emma Grace Merrifield captivated the judges with a collection that transformed a deeply personal experience into striking visual storytelling.

Drawing inspiration from the beautiful chaos of everyday life as a mother, Emma explored the contrast between composure and reality. “It’s about trying to keep it together,” she explains. “The back is so perfect and the front is frazzled -because I’m a mum to a four-year-old, and we’re frazzled.” The result was a thoughtful and technically accomplished collection that resonated for its authenticity, creativity and emotional connection.

Now 11 years into her hairdressing career, Emma sees this achievement as a defining milestone. Looking ahead, she’s focused on taking her career to the next level, continuing to elevate her craft and embracing the opportunities that come with working alongside CPR Hair as part of her Mane Event win.

MADDISON SPALDING - ROAR WINNER: Crowned the 2026 ROAR Apprentice Winner, Madison Spalling impressed the judges with a bold and confident collection that showcased her creativity beyond the salon floor.

Wanting to step outside the world of blonde hairdressing, Madison set out to create something unexpected. “I wanted to create something that you don’t see every day in the salon,” she explains, “something that stood out and was nice and bold,” she said. Supported by a collaborative team of creatives, including photographers, makeup artists and mentors, her vision came to life in a collection that celebrated originality and artistic expression.

As she embarks on a 12-month journey with CPR Hair, Madison is excited to elevate her career through mentorship, education and creative opportunities, marking the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her hairdressing journey.

ustralian salon owners and stylists gathered for an intimate morning of education as Aveda Australia hosted an exclusive Look & Learn event led by internationally renowned educator Traci Sakosits, Vice President of Education at Aveda Arts.

With more than three decades in the industry, Sakosits is recognised as one of hairdressing’s most respected educators. Before joining Aveda Arts in 2022, she spent more than 20 years as North American Creative Director for Vidal Sassoon, leading global education, editorial projects and international seminars while presenting collections around the world alongside the Sassoon creative team.

The morning began with a welcome from Corinne Duffy, Brand General Manager of Aveda Australia, who offered attendees an exclusive preview of an upcoming global

product launch set to arrive later this month, describing it as a versatile, multitasking innovation designed with broad salon appeal.

Remaining true to Aveda’s holistic philosophy, guests were then invited to slow down before the education session began. Led by Aveda Education Manager Christopher Chu, the group participated in gentle stretching and breathwork while the calming aroma of Aveda Chakra™ 4 filled the room, creating a relaxed and intentional atmosphere.

Fresh from appearing on stage at Hair The Movement, Sakosits took to the platform to demonstrate a modern textured bob with a short fringe on model Alex. Throughout the live cut, she shared her approach to precision cutting, texture and shape, explaining how seemingly simple techniques can be adapted to suit individual clients while maintaining a contemporary finish.

The session quickly evolved into an open conversation with the audience, with Sakosits sharing insights from her own career, which began growing up in a family of hairdressers before landing her first role in an Aveda salon.

Education remained a central theme throughout the morning, particularly the changing expectations of the next generation of hairdressers. Sakosits discussed how training has evolved to better engage younger apprentices by introducing practical cutting skills earlier in their careers and delivering visible results sooner.

She noted that today’s emerging professionals are motivated differently from previous generations, seeking creativity, flexibility, travel opportunities and a sense of community alongside technical excellence. The conversation resonated with attendees, many of whom shared the ongoing challenge of attracting and retaining young talent, particularly in regional salons.

While demonstrating the haircut, Sakosits also explored the consultation process, encouraging stylists to consider face shape, bone structure, hair texture and lifestyle before deciding on a cutting approach. She spoke about embracing technology, including artificial intelligence, as a tool that can streamline administrative tasks and free stylists to focus on what matters most.

“AI allows us to be free to do what’s important,” she explained. “Hair in hands and face-to-face time with people.”

Reflecting on her own career, Sakosits spoke about the opportunities hairdressing has provided over the past three decades.

“I’ve been able to travel the world with one scissor and one comb. For over 30 years, I’ve had the honour of carrying forward a tradition I believe in. The discipline and process of hair design and everything that surrounds it—professionalism, understanding people and the world around us, and the responsibility of developing others.

Working with Aveda allows me to partner with a brand that aligns with my personal values and offers a global network for development and education.”

eld at ICC Sydney as part of Hair Festival, HAIR The Movement brought together leading Australian artists alongside internationally acclaimed educators from the UK, USA and Brazil for a full day dedicated to cutting, colour, styling and creative excellence.

Founded by legendary educator Sharon Blain, HAIR The Movement was created to raise the standard of hair education by bringing together global masters and leading artists in one collaborative space where skill, creativity and industry converge.

“This is where skill, creativity and industry come together,” Sharon said ahead of the event.

The program opened with the A.H Salon Team, featuring James Akers, Suzy Kershaw, Kristina Russell and Harrison Sansom, who shared fresh approaches to cutting, colour and styling. The momentum continued with one of the day’s most anticipated presentations as Australia’s leading cut and colour educators collaborated with internationally renowned cutting expert Traci Sakosits (USA), showcasing technical precision and modern colour direction.

Global Cutting Master Ben Brown (UK) then took to the stage, sharing his renowned precision cutting philosophy before Sylvestre Finold (UK) made his Australian debut, captivating the audience with his boundary-pushing avant-garde artistry inspired by the world’s fashion weeks.

air Festival 2026 once again proved that the industry’s biggest event isn’t just about discovering the latest trends or celebrating creative excellence—it’s about learning.

Across two packed days at ICC Sydney, more than 24 education sessions brought together salon owners, stylists, barbers and emerging professionals for an inspiring program that blended technical mastery with business strategy, leadership, wellbeing and innovation. From artificial intelligence and pricing confidence to consultation, textured hair and mental health, the program reflected the realities of modern salon life while equipping attendees with practical tools to take back to the salon.

What became clear across the weekend was that today’s hairdresser is expected to be far more than a talented technician. The modern professional is also a business owner, educator, marketer, mentor and trusted advisor. Throughout Hair Festival, presenters challenged attendees to think beyond the chair and embrace every aspect of building a successful, sustainable career.

BUSINESS TAKES CENTRE STAGE The weekend opened with the ever-popular REALtalk Business Forum, where hundreds of salon owners and leaders gathered to explore one of the industry’s biggest conversations—how to build profitable businesses while remaining authentic.

Artificial intelligence emerged as one of the hottest topics of the day, with James Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Programming at SMK, encouraging attendees to view AI as an opportunity rather than a threat.

“Think what you can do over the next six, twelve, eighteen months. Adopt a realistic timeline. Don’t overload yourself, don’t overload your team.”

His message positioned AI as a tool that can simplify administration and improve efficiencies, allowing salon professionals to spend more time focusing on creativity and client relationships.

The conversation continued with pricing, profitability and long-term business sustainability.

International business strategist Charmaine Schembri explored how salon owners can better communicate their value, while industry leaders including Chris Hammond, Sonia Tomas, Aygun Sana, MJ and Shakira Jade discussed pricing confidence and strategies for building financially healthy businesses.

Later sessions examined everything from understanding salon numbers to planning for future growth, reinforcing that successful salons are built on strong systems just as much as exceptional hairdressing.

TECHNICAL EXCELLENCE WITH PURPOSE While Hair Festival has always been known for world-class technical education, this year’s presentations demonstrated that technique is only part of the equation.

Sessions including Transformative Blondes: Shape, Dimension, Prestige Colour Transformation – The ColorKick Way, Method + Mindset, The Extension Experience and The New Luxury of Hair Extensions all shared a common philosophy—beautiful hair starts with healthy hair and meaningful consultation.

During O&M’s blonde education session, Grace Kelly captured the sentiment shared across many presentations.

“When you know something works, you just keep doing it.”

Rather than chasing trends, educators focused on delivering techniques that improve client outcomes while protecting hair integrity.

Great Lengths educators Naomi Panizza, Rachel Vitullo, Pete Thomsen and Kirby Lago also explored the growing demand for premium extension services, with Kirby highlighting the power of authentic marketing.

Throughout the weekend, live demonstrations were paired with open audience discussion, encouraging attendees to ask questions, challenge ideas and gain practical solutions they could immediately implement in the salon.

BUILDING BETTER RELATIONSHIPS One of the strongest themes running throughout Hair Festival was the importance of genuine human connection.

Award-winning extension specialist Sarah Emilia reminded attendees that consultation is about understanding the person, not simply recommending a service.

Her presentation encouraged stylists to create authentic social media content, build trust through honest conversations and prioritise long-term client relationships over quick wins.

Business educators echoed the same philosophy.

During The Control Shift: From Busy to Profitable, presenters Sheridan Rose Shaw and Ayden Vakai challenged salon owners to rethink retail, positioning product recommendations as an extension of professional care rather than a sales opportunity.

As Vakai explained, clients are more likely to invest in products when recommendations are framed around maintaining healthy hair and protecting their salon results, rather than increasing retail revenue.

INCLUSION SHAPES THE FUTURE Hair Festival also continued its commitment to expanding education beyond traditional salon techniques.

In From Roots To Revolution, multidisciplinary artist and textured hair specialist Ella Rowe encouraged attendees to deepen their understanding of textured hair while recognising the lived experiences of clients who have often felt overlooked within salon environments.

“All my life I have done hair and made art.”

Her session reinforced that textured hair education is no longer optional—it is an essential skill for serving Australia’s increasingly diverse communities.

LESSONS FROM INDUSTRY LEADERS Few sessions resonated more deeply than those led by Denis McFadden, founder of Just Cuts.

Drawing on decades of experience building one of Australia’s most recognisable salon brands, McFadden reflected on the importance of continually evolving alongside customers.

“If you keep listening and acting on feedback, you will stay one step ahead of changes in the market, as you will know what your brand needs to change to ensure customers keep coming back through your doors.”

His advice served as a reminder that while trends may change, listening to clients remains one of the most valuable business strategies of all.

LOOKING AFTER THE HAIRDRESSER Technical skills and business knowledge weren’t the only focus.

Hair Festival also recognised the emotional demands of life behind the chair through sessions dedicated to wellbeing and leadership.

Following a mindfulness session in the Wellness Lounge, Glenn Conley explored the psychological challenges many hairdressers face, explaining how years of listening to clients can take an emotional toll.

He identified three common issues he regularly encounters when working with salon teams: • Imposter syndrome • Feeling stuck • Becoming reactive His message was both practical and reassuring.

“Once I get a team talking, they often solve the issues themselves.”

It was a timely reminder that investing in team wellbeing is just as important as investing in technical education.

EDUCATION THAT CONTINUES BEYOND THE CLASSROOM The final sessions of the weekend reinforced another important message— that education doesn’t end when the presentation finishes.

Lauren McCowan and Jules Tognini used their session to launch new education platforms while encouraging attendees to continue sharing knowledge throughout their careers.

Across every presentation, whether discussing AI, consultation, pricing, colouring, extensions or leadership, one consistent theme emerged.

The REALtalk Business Forum 2026 brought salon owners, managers and industry leaders together, with this year’s program centred on the theme Charge Your Worth, Unlock Your Potential.

James Fitzgerald, Executive Director of Programming at SMK, opened the education program with Actionable AI: More Clients. Less Effort., examining how salon owners, stylists and barbers can use AI to improve planning, strengthen client relationships and retention, support

The conversation around value continued with the Pricing Your Worth panel. Aygun Sana, Head of Sales and Operations AUS/NZ at Vish; Sonia Tomas, Founder of The Salon Dr; Shakira Jade, Founder, Owner and Creative Director of Hair Candy Australia; MJ, Founder of Floractive Australia; and Chris Hammond, Managing Director of O&M, came together to tackle pricing and profitability from across the professional hair industry.

Numbers were next on the agenda, with Kate Slater, Business Adviser, CEO and Certified Practising Accountant at Camtech & Slater, presenting The Numbers Behind a Profitable Salon.

The session focused on four key numbers salon owners should understand to help build a business that appropriately rewards its owner.

Technology and adaptability took centre stage in Building the Salon of the Future, with Chris Hunter, Owner and Business Director of Willomina, and Hannah Hemopo, Key Account Manager at Fresha ANZ. The discussion looked at embracing technology, moving beyond outdated ways of working and creating a modern salon business.

HAIR FESTIVAL’S BIGGEST NIGHT OUT

Following a packed day of education, inspiration and connection at Hair Festival 2026, the industry came together for Wonderland, sponsored by Fringe Brands and SarahK Australia, at new Martin Place venue ILUMINA.

nder the theme Illuminate The Night, 650 guests embraced the dress code in white, pastel, metallic and iridescent looks, while the venue came alive with oysters and blanc de blanc, sequins, LED butterfly dancers, photo moments and live music.

A highlight of the evening was the Best Dressed competition, which saw guests take to the runway, with the crowd ultimately deciding the winner.

More than an after-party, Wonderland celebrated the creativity, connection and community at the heart of Australian hairdressing, bringing the industry together to close out Hair Festival in spectacular style.

he Hair Festival 2026 competition arena came alive with creativity, technical excellence and innovation as hairdressers, barbers, braiders and emerging talent competed across a packed program of live and predone competitions.

The 4 Box Braid challenge opened proceedings, with 13 competitors given one hour to complete a four-strand boxed braid. Roshani Ratnagopal (Braids by Roshani) took first place, followed by Rozida Mautama and Jennifer Alexander Rojas, both from Sydney Braid Bar. The action then moved to the live cutting arena across THE STAGE and THE EXCHANGE, with competitors given just 30 minutes to impress the judges in Women’s Street Style, Barber Street and Emerging Talent Barber cutting.

Pearlin McCarthy (Pearlin Hair and Makeup Artistry) was crowned Hair Festival Stylist Champion after achieving the highest overall score, also winning Women’s Ultimate Look and Avant-Garde.

Jeremy Stott (Ikigai Barbers) claimed Hair Festival Barber Champion after winning Barber Street, while Matt Leigh (Matt Cutz) was named Hair Festival Emerging Talent Champion.

Other winners included Anna Ninonya in Ultimate Look – Men, Daniela Egidi in Colour Innovator, Justin Hampson in Women’s Street Style, Yulia Kuzmina in Bridal and Lulu Bliss Johnson in Emerging Talent Blow Dry.

ACKNOWLEDGING THE JUDGES Hair Festival also thanked its expert judging panel for their time, passion and commitment to this year’s competitions.

Point Judges were led by Chairperson Antonio Sorgiavanni, while Floor Judges were chaired by Sherelle Mondo, overseeing the live competitions and ensuring competitors adhered to competition rules.

ne of Australia’s most influential figures in professional hairdressing has turned the spotlight on the people behind the chair, with Just Cuts Founder Denis McFadden officially launching his memoir, The Power of Showing Up, at Hair Festival 2026.

The book traces McFadden’s journey from a young apprentice growing up in Sydney’s Campsie to building one of the world’s largest hairdressing franchise networks, now spanning more than 230 salons across Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Launching the book before an audience of industry peers at Hair Festival, McFadden reflected on a career shaped by resilience, opportunity and an unwavering belief in the power of people.

“I’ve been in this industry my whole life and I still get moved by the people in it. Hair Festival felt like the right place to launch this book. These are our people.

This is our story.”

More than a business success story, The Power of Showing Up explores McFadden’s personal journey, from growing up without a father and leaving school before discovering he was dyslexic, to finding purpose through hairdressing. His career would eventually take him from the salons of Sydney to London’s fashion scene during the 1960s, backstage at two Olympic Games, and ultimately to founding Just Cuts in 1982.

Today, the brand services more than 100,000 clients each week through a network supported by more than 2,500 stylists across four countries.

Central to the memoir is the philosophy that helped shape Just Cuts from the very beginning. Long before flexible work arrangements became a broader workplace conversation, McFadden built a salon model centred on fixed wages, predictable hours and genuine work-life balance.

Rather than relying on commission structures or split shifts, Just Cuts introduced a system that allowed stylists to finish on time and swap shifts with colleagues when

life demanded it—an approach McFadden says has supported thousands of careers over the past four decades.

“There are thousands of salon owners and stylists, particularly women, who built careers, raised families and bought homes because of what Just Cuts gave them— flexible hours, real pay and the ability to actually leave on time. That’s the story worth telling.”

The memoir also reflects on the relationships that have defined McFadden’s career, highlighting the franchise partners, salon teams and clients who helped transform a single Sydney salon into an international business.

While reluctant to tell his own story for many years, McFadden said he ultimately realised the industry’s history deserved to be documented.

“I resisted writing this for a long time.

I’m not someone who likes talking about himself. But I looked around and thought— if not me, who? And if not now, when?”

For McFadden, the book is ultimately less about business success than the people who made it possible.

“This isn’t a book about being the smartest person in the room. It’s about what happens when you just keep showing up.

SMITHS COLLECTIVE BRANDS POWER UP RETREAT 2026 While product and purpose often take centre stage at industry events, the Smiths Collective Brands Power Up Business Summit in Bali placed the emphasis firmly on the power of connection, human knowledge and a future-focused salon experience. Real salon conversations and the back-end business of hairdressing brought a driven collective of professionals together for a valuable deep dive into the topics shaping salons today, writes Cameron Pine.

n the coastline of Uluwatu at the Grun retreat, the Smiths were determined to deliver a retreat from 24th to 27th May for salon owners facing today’s biggest challenges. It is also an opportunity for attendees to step away from the day-to-day demands of salon life and focus on what they need to change or implement to continue succeeding. More than simply a conference, the second iteration for the Smiths Collective Brands fostered a genuine sense of community among like-minded business owners. They shared common challenges, ambitions and opportunities within an evolving industry landscape and a desire to have the honest conversations rarely shared at home.

The strength of the summit lay in its practical approach between content 40 INSTYLE

and connection, across a series of panel discussions, presentations and open forums over lunch, dinner and everywhere in-between, attendees gained real-world insights into leadership, team culture, profitability, marketing, client retention and business growth. Rather than focusing on theory alone, speakers shared genuine experiences, lessons learned and actionable strategies that could be implemented immediately upon returning to the salon. The educational program at the Power Up Bali 2026 was deliberately designed to address the real challenges facing salon owners today.

They demonstrated how mentorship, emotional connection and strong workplace culture continue to be critical drivers of both client loyalty and team retention.

Benni’s legacy had guests and younger owners reflecting on a nostalgic and powerful hairdressing industry with Hair Legacy, from creating a path for his sons to follow, to using both technology and education to create a true crossgenerational business.The session explored how strong values, education and culture can become a lasting competitive advantage while building a business that stands the test of time through creativity and conviction.

Sharlene Lee and Jess Del Borello also shared their perspective on business, leadership and growth, with a focus on content creation and team reward structures. They gave a candid look into the realities of building a well-known salon brand while preserving the values and culture that underpin their success.

In Marketing for Success, the pair unpacked the modern marketing funnel, showing attendees how to attract, nurture and convert the right clients through purposeful content, personalisation, and consistent brand messaging. Their interactive social media workshop then focused on creating authentic content and empowering teams to contribute to salon marketing. They created a fun competition

to immerse everyone in social media Circles style. This led to the difficult task of choosing a winner with numerous social posts hitting the feeds. Congratulations to Next International for taking this challenging task and making it their own.

Sharlene and Jess continued to highlight the importance of succession planning with content and incentives, team development and creating a business that can thrive beyond its founders. For Circles, hitting targets is a daily conversation and forever achievable when the necessary structure is in place Technology and client experience formed another key pillar of the summit, with the team from Phorest presenting practical strategies around future tech, new features, the Phorest built-in AI assistant, and salon service tips that give time back to the owners and creatives.

Client retention and leveraging data to make smarter business decisions came to the fore, while their insights reinforced the importance of understanding client behaviours both online and post service.

They emphasised using technology not simply as an operational tool, but as a driver of stronger relationships and enhanced experience, with purchases long after the appointment ends. Turning Technology into Profit pulled successful salon owner Carl Keeley from Chumba to talk about his proven tools. He joined Sandy Carty and Michelle Brady to explore how salon owners can better utilise

automation, artificial intelligence and business intelligence tools to improve client retention, marketing performance and operational efficiency. He teased some exciting new features soon to be released. Phorest provided practical examples of how technology can be used to increase profitability while enhancing the client experience.

Stephanie Meyer started both mornings of the conference agenda with mindfulness and movement before a presentation on how much food affects our performance.

She not only helped to set the intention for each day, but showed how reducing stress and improving focus can be done without an increased time investment. She guided willing participants through a body scan exercise, emphasized deep breathing and grounding. “To listen to clients adequately you need sensory anchors to stay present,” Stephanie said. She showed how paying attention to the present moment without judgment will help with stress reduction, and how mindful listening prevents burnout and enhances well-being.

A recurring theme throughout the four days was legacy – not simply in terms of family businesses, but in the broader sense of building something meaningful that endures today’s challenges. Whether discussing leadership, culture, financial management or team engagement, presenters consistently challenged attendees to think beyond short-term wins and focus on creating businesses that can stand the test of time.

As salon owners navigate an increasingly complex business landscape, the Smiths demonstrated the value of investing in education, perspective shifts and connection beyond online. Through a combination of family expertise, proven business strategies and open discussion, everyone walked away with a powerful reminder that strong businesses are built through leadership, planning and a commitment to continuous growth.

THE NANOPLASTY MAP When MJ, trichologist and CEO of Floractive Australia and New Zealand first set out to introduce Nanoplasty to the Australian market in 2019, there was no established category to sell into. There was simply a technology she believed could change the way hairdressers approached straightening - and a market that was yet to understand it, writes Cameron Pine.

ogether with co-founder Samuel Freitas, MJ began introducing what was then a virtually unknown treatment to Australian salons. The name Nanoplasty itself was coined by Samuel, adapted from the Brazilian Nanoplastia to create a term that would resonate locally, and one that we know today has carved a completely new category – so much so it had people talking just how big of a category it was, and its presence at Hair Festival 2026.

The proposition was simple, but ambitious: beautifully smooth, straight hair without compromising the integrity of the hair fibre, however, the response was anything but immediate.

MJ went from salon to salon, personally demonstrating the technology and explaining why it was fundamentally different from the keratin, smoothing and straightening treatments hairdressers already knew. More often than not, the answer was no. The assumption was that Nanoplasty was simply another version of something already on the market.

It wasn’t.

Developed in Brazil by Floractive, Nanoplasty represented a new approach to hair transformation - a vegan, Halalapproved formulation built around nanosized organic acids, amino acids and what

The evolution of the category is perhaps most visible at hairdressing’s biggest gatherings. At Floractive’s first Australian Hair Festival, the brand was the only one talking about Nanoplasty. By 2026, more than five brands were presenting their own

FROM BRAZILIAN INNOVATION TO AUSTRALIAN MOVEMENT Floractive was founded in Brazil in 2011 by entrepreneur Jane Sarassi and has grown into an international professional haircare company with a focus on cosmetic innovation, salon education and advanced smoothing technology. Its global headquarters are located in Cajamar, São Paulo.

But the Australian and New Zealand story is distinctly MJ’s.

What began as one woman walking into salons and attempting to explain a technology few hairdressers had heard of has evolved into an education network spanning thousands of professionals, and a category now being pursued by competitors across the industry.

YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED CRISPY CLUB. WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT? I launched Crispy Club with my business partner Gareth Philpott.

Working with men’s hair every day, we noticed around 80 per cent of clients were using clay, but many products were difficult to wash out and caused build-up.

We wanted to create a matte clay that’s completely water-soluble, so guys can use it every day without product build-up. It smells great, performs exactly how we want it to, and our Sea Salt Spray was inspired by where we live—Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast.

LUKE MUNN X YOUTH OF DULWICH Luke Munn has never been afraid of evolution, and his latest move is perhaps his most personal yet. With the opening of Youth of Dulwich, the acclaimed hairdresser leaves behind his former space and steps into a new chapter that feels both considered and instinctive. More than simply a new salon address, Youth of Dulwich represents a fresh expression of Munn’s creative vision, his connection to his community and the kind of salon culture he wants to build for the future, writes Cameron Pine.

e speak to Luke about leaving the old space behind, the thinking behind the new salon and why sometimes the biggest move forward starts with knowing when it’s time to move on!

CONGRATULATIONS ON THE NEW SPACE. AT WHAT POINT DID YOU KNOW IT WAS TIME TO OPEN THIS NEW SHOP? Thankyou! There were a few factors that came into play when it came to a rebrand and the opening of the new space. One of those being that a vacant space became available right in the high street of Dulwich and in perfect time we had to make a decision on the space we were in. With that also came time to close a chapter and move with a whole new vision and a whole new brand.

WHAT WAS THE VISION YOU COULDN’T ACHIEVE ANYWHERE ELSE UNTIL NOW? The vision was always to build something bigger than a barbershop.

Not just somewhere you come in, get a haircut and leave, but a brand people actually want to be part of. A place for good hair, good people, education, events, products, collaborations and whatever else we decide to throw at it. The shop is really just the starting point. Youth of Dulwich is about building a culture and community that can exist well beyond the chair.

WHAT’S THE STORY/MEANING BEHIND THE YOUTH OF DULWICH? Dulwich is a sleepy little suburb in Adelaide. Ask most people where it is on a map, they wouldn’t be able to point it out despite being five minutes from the CBD. Historically, Dulwich has skewed a little older. Quiet streets, established homes, good coffee, early nights. You get the idea. But in recent times that’s been changing, a younger generation is moving in, new businesses are opening and this little inner city pocket is starting to find a new energy. We didn’t want to wait till this had already happened.

We wanted to be the change. Youth Of Dulwich isn’t about being young, it’s about staying young in the way you think, create and carry yourself. It’s about bringing a little noise to somewhere quiet. A little rebellion to somewhere traditional. Good hair, Good music, Good people. A space that feels considered without taking itself seriously

DESCRIBE THE FEELING YOU WANT CLIENTS TO HAVE THE MOMENT THEY WALK THROUGH THE DOOR? Familiar, welcoming, social and a little unexpected. We want clients to feel the personality of the shop and feel like they’re a part of our family.

EVERY GREAT BARBERSHOP HAS ITS OWN PERSONALITY. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOURS IN THREE WORDS? Refined, Local, Loud WHAT DESIGN DETAILS OR FEATURES BEST REFLECT YOUR IDENTITY AS A BARBER, HOW DID YOU PAIR THIS BACK WITH A SIMPLER NEW SHOP? I’ve always been a little raw in the way I approach things, I wanted the shop to carry that same energy while feeling refined. Raw materials, Texture, clean lines and plenty of space. Nothing overworked. Simple, Refined but still a little rough around the edges.

WAS THERE ONE NON-NEGOTIABLE ELEMENT YOU KNEW HAD TO BE PART OF THIS SHOP FROM DAY ONE? The glass block bench seat was probably the one physical nonnegotiable, it set the tone. But bigger than that was culture. We wanted the right team, the right energy and a shop people actually wanted to spend time in. The fit out means nothing if the people and atmosphere aren’t right.

IN AN ERA WHERE ANYONE CAN CUT HAIR, WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE SEPARATES A TRULY MEMORABLE BARBERING EXPERIENCE? Skillset. Serving a client a beer doesn’t make you a premium salon.

I personally believe what truly is and will set you apart is your understanding and knowledge of hair. We are in a time where with the insane amount of access online clients are starting to see through the smoke and mirrors. True knowledge and execution will create that experience.

HOW HAS YOUR CUTTING STYLE EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? I was originally trained in Traditional Barbering and spent my early years under the mentorship of some amazing barbers. I think this created the foundations for me but I always knew I wanted more. I saw an opportunity to upskill and adapt my skillset to keep up with the fast pace of our industry. Longer hair is in, curls are in. You need to be proficient in hair as a whole. I’m constantly learning from everyone I can across men’s and women’s hair globally.

The conversation has shifted from ‘how light can I go?’ to ‘how do I keep my hair healthy while getting there?’ They want softness, dimension and colour that grows out beautifully. That’s always been our approach at Pélo, so ‘no bleach’ isn’t something we’ve chased as a trend – it’s simply where the industry is heading.

HOW DOES BLOND STUDIO HELP YOU CREATE A LUMINOUS, HAIR-FRIENDLY FINISH? Blond Studio has changed the way I work. Being able to lift up to four levels in a controlled way means I can create brightness without pushing the hair beyond its limits. It can even lift artificial colour without traditional lightener, giving me that soft, luminous finish while maintaining strength. I had early access and was the first in Australia to use it, so I’ve had the opportunity to really master it. Seeing a client experience luminous colour that still feels like their own hair never gets old.

HOW DO YOU MAKE A TREND FEEL PERSONAL TO THE CLIENT? For me, it always starts with the person, not the trend. Consultation is everything – how they live, how much time they have, their skin tone and the condition of their hair. I then take what’s exciting about a trend and shape it around them.

HOW DO YOU BALANCE CREATIVITY WITH COMMERCIAL REALITY? The most artistic work is often the work people can actually wear. My clients have real lives, and my job is to make them feel incredible every day, not just when they leave the salon. These softer, lower-maintenance looks allow me to be creative and technical while giving clients beautiful grow-out and longevity. “The hair direction for the year’s show was reflected to be modern, sensual and quietly luxurious,” Ben said. “We worked with the model’s hair to give it a soft, natural texture with subtle movement, where the hair feels alive but never overly polished.”

In this case, we didn’t just take it to the next level, we took it ten levels higher,” John said.

FROM MENORCA TO COPENHAGEN: KEVIN.MURPHY TAKES HAIR GLOBAL From sun-soaked Menorca to the creative energy of Copenhagen Fashion Week, KEVIN.MURPHY continues to cement its place at the intersection of professional hair and global fashion.

wo recent runway collaborations saw the brand create dramatically different hair directions for Australian fashion house ALÉMAIS and New York label Collina Strada, demonstrating the versatility of editorial hair and the role it plays in bringing a designer’s vision to life.

For ALÉMAIS Resort 2027, presented in Menorca, KEVIN.MURPHY joined the Australian label as Official Hair Partner, with Hair Director Paloma Garcia creating a romantic, undone look inspired by the Spanish island setting.

Working with each model’s natural texture, Garcia created softly knotted, windswept ponytails adorned with delicate seashell details. The look complemented ALÉMAIS’ signature sense of craftsmanship and escapism while maintaining individuality across the runway.

The styling team worked with a wardrobe of KEVIN.MURPHY favourites including UN.TANGLED, KILLER.TWIRLS, DOO.OVER, POWDER.PUFF, SESSION. SPRAY and YOUNG.AGAIN to build texture, movement and an effortless finish.

Responding to designer Hillary Taymour’s colourful, unconventional universe, Souleiman created two distinct looks – Couture Disco and Space Fairy – inspired by astral landscapes, sparkling gases and controlled chaos.

For Couture Disco, traditional updo techniques were pushed into abstract, sculptural territory.

“Couture Disco is an updo, but it’s the updo after a storm in the galaxy. It has this chaotic, abstract weirdness happening within it,” Souleiman said.

Hair was prepped with FRESH.HAIR and ANTI.GRAVITY, with SESSION.SPRAY layered through the styling process to help construct the exaggerated forms. But what I’m most grateful for is the platform it’s given to Sloans, our team, and the craft itself. This isn’t just about me, it’s about elevating the entire industry and showing people that hairdressing is a respected, creative and dynamic career.

IF YOU COULD EDUCATE ANYWHERE OR WITH ANY SALON TEAM IN THE INDUSTRY, WHO WOULD IT BE? I’ll jump in a time machine and choose Vidal Sassoon in London, back in the day. He was such an inspiration, the way he approached the craft with absolute precision, the artistry, the philosophy behind every cut.

To have trained alongside him would have been extraordinary. I would have absorbed not just his technical knowledge, but his mindset about what hairdressing could be.

WHAT THINGS DO YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR THE NEXT 12 MONTHS? I’ve entered the British Hairdressing Awards, which is a huge goal for me. I’m also committed to working more European fashion weeks as Paris, Milan, London are calling again.

Beyond the international trips I’m working closely with Lily Blue to leverage the win for my personal profile, the Sloans brand, and most importantly, my team. We’re being strategic about how we use this momentum to create opportunities and elevate everyone’s profile.

WHAT BRANDS IN THE INDUSTRY KEEP YOU INSPIRED? L’Oréal is my home, and I’m constantly inspired by their innovation and commitment to education. They’re always pushing boundaries and investing in the future of hairdressing.

AHIA WA/SA Hairdresser of the Year 2026 HOW HAS IT BEEN SINCE YOUR STATE WIN? WHAT HAS CHANGED BACK IN WA? It has been such a special time, and I have really loved being able to share and celebrate the win with my wider community.

The support from clients, peers, friends and the broader hairdressing industry has been incredible, and that has made the experience feel even more meaningful.

To have my work recognised by some of the best in the industry is something I am incredibly proud of. It has given me a renewed sense of confidence moving forward and reinforced that I am on the right path creatively. The win has also opened up new conversations and opportunities, but more than anything, it has made me feel excited about what comes next and motivated to keep pushing myself further.

HOW HAS WINNING HELPED TICK OFF YOUR LIST OF GOALS? WHAT’S NEXT? What comes next for me is less about chasing another accolade and more about using my experience to educate, mentor and help elevate the industry. I want to create education that gives hairdressers not only stronger technical knowledge, but also greater confidence in their own creative voice and career direction.

I have spent many years building businesses, leading teams, educating and developing my own artistry, and I now feel a real responsibility to share that knowledge in a meaningful way. My goal is to contribute to an industry that is more skilled, more connected and more confident in the value of what we do.

HOW WILL WINNING HELP YOUR BUSINESS TODAY? The win gives people another level of confidence in my experience and creative ability. It strengthens my position as an educator and opens the door to more opportunities within the professional hair industry.

It also supports the work I am doing with AER Haircare. AER was built from my experience as a hairdresser, salon owner and educator, so the award reinforces that the brand comes from someone who genuinely understands hair, performance and the needs of professionals.

WHAT IS THE FOCUS FOR YOUR BUSINESS IN THE NEXT TWO YEARS? My focus is divided between growing AER Haircare and continuing to expand my creative and education work.

With AER, I want to grow the brand thoughtfully within the professional salon market. I am not interested in growth for the sake of growth. I want to build strong relationships with salons that genuinely align with our values around performance, wellness and more considered haircare.

IF YOU COULD TRAVEL SOMEWHERE YOU HAVEN’T BEEN, WHERE WOULD IT BE? I would love to visit Japan. I am fascinated by the contrast between tradition and modernity, and the level of consideration that goes into design, craft, fashion and presentation. I think it would be incredibly inspiring visually, but I am also drawn to the culture of discipline, mastery and attention to detail. Those are qualities I really respect within hairdressing and creativity.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE SACRIFICES YOU FEEL YOU HAVE MADE TO ACHIEVE YOUR BUSINESS GOALS? One of the greatest sacrifices has been my health and wellbeing.

As a salon owner, I spent many years working long hours, carrying the responsibility of a team and constantly putting the needs of the business and others ahead of my own. Over time, that pace led to burnout and chronic fatigue. It made me realise that ambition without boundaries is not sustainable, no matter how passionate you are about your work.

I am incredibly proud of what I built, but I also want to be honest about the personal cost. As I move into this next chapter, I feel strongly about educating and encouraging other hairdressers to look after themselves, protect their energy and create healthier ways of working. We need talented people to stay in this industry for the long term, and that means building careers that support our health and lives, rather than sacrificing them entirely for success.

WHAT IS CHANGING IN TERMS OF EDUCATION AND HOW ARE YOU ADAPTING? Hairdressing education is becoming more accessible, visual and immediate. My approach is to combine modern, accessible learning with strong technical foundations. I want education to feel inspiring and relevant, but also practical enough that hairdressers can take the knowledge back to the salon and apply it with confidence. I am continuing to develop both inperson and digital education, while making sure that genuine connection, feedback and mentorship are not lost.
