Home makeover If you want to give a space a facelift, but don’t want to spend too much money, a feature or accent wall is a great way to bring the wow factor to any space.

W

orking from home seems to

be the new normal, at least for the

foreseeable future as Covid-19 is still creating havoc in Australia with new

lockdowns and restrictions in place. People are spending more time at home than ever before, so the home needs to be the place where they feel comfortable and productive at the same time. Accent walls have long been an affordable way to give a space a facelift. Creating a modern yet timeless feature wall that leaves a lasting impression in your home can be a daunting and unfamiliar task. Whether the aim is to inject playful colour into a child’s bedroom or add a touch of sophistication to a home office, a textured feature wall is guaranteed to bring the ‘wow’ factor into any living space. Dulux colour expert, Andrea Lucena-Orr, says when it

decor

comes to creating a feature wall, you must work it so it harmonises with your existing colour scheme, furniture and accessories. “Consider the kitchen, for example; Dulux Design Stainless Steel Effect used on cabinetry will complement an already industrial-looking space, whereas the Dulux Design Suede Effect is more suited to creating a luxurious and moody feel–perfect for a formal living or dining room,” she says. “Other popular design trends we are seeing include concrete and metallic accents. Dulux Design Concrete Effect in Pale Elements in a casual living area or hallway entrance pairs beautifully with raw materials such as timber, linen, wool, stone and leather, and Dulux Design Metallic Effect can be created as a contemporary backdrop for artwork.” Whatever space you’re looking to enhance, it’s important to consider how exposed the room is to natural light as this will affect the textural features and impact of the accent wall, says Lucena-Orr. “If the Dulux Design October 2020  5

Glitter Effect is your desirable effect, choose a room with an abundance of light–both natural and artificial–so you enjoy the most benefits from the luminescence,” she says. “To optimise a feature wall’s impact on a space, colour consideration goes hand-in-hand with lighting. Like standard paint, always ensure you do a sample patch on large cardboard to see how it works alongside your fixtures, furniture and accessories before making the full commitment.” Upcycling has proven to be an on-trend, cost effective and sustainable way to modernise tired furniture and accessories around the home, and with more people spending time indoors there has never been a better time to tackle these DIYs. If you’re not sure where to begin or what textural effects to choose, one of the biggest home design trends we’ve seen is the return to earthy tones and raw-look finishes in interiors, says Lucena-Orr. “Natural and imperfect finishes such as stone, concrete and an aged patina effect on rust and copper is ever popular, as we are increasingly aware of the positive effects of nature on our mental and physical health and seek new and innovative ways to bring the outside in,” she explains. “As such, lush displays of indoor plants, which also lends itself to this trend really pops when offset against planters, side tables and coffee tables in aged copper and natural stone finishes, particularly Dulux Design in Copper and Stone Effects. “If you like a distressed, rustic and imperfect look, but prefer gentle and livable pastels, try upcycling larger items of 6  giftguideonline.com.au

furniture such as a wardrobes, buffets or bedside tables in Dulux Design Chalk Effect. For a touch of luxe, Dulux’s Metallic Effect comes in nine finishes, which allows you to reproduce the look of glimmering metal with minimal hassle and expense–perfect for side tables and bed frames through to decorative accessories such as vessels and planters. “Not only for interior features, some of the effects in the Dulux Design range can be used outside the home to elevate alfresco areas, pool sides and gardens by way of upcycling outdoor accessories.” To help mimic natural elements, selected effects in the range such as Copper, Gold, Stainless Steel, Metallic, Pearl, Stone and Suede also offer a versatility in finish to suit your individual preference. While the final coat is still drying, choose your desired textural finish by applying a muslin cloth, a roller brush or a paint brush over the surface to create a smooth, rough or random overlapping pattern respectively. Face masks will be a staple this summer as we check out some of the offerings in today’s market. October 2020  17

trends

The essential ingredient For Annabel Trends, face masks had been on its radar way before Covid-19 hit. In fact, years ago owner Sally Dunn looked at face masks thinking that one day these would be more mainstream. Little did she know how accurate she was back then, although it took a virus spreading worldwide to do it. “We saw people in Asia wearing them Who would’ve thought face masks will be a if not the hot (fashion)

elastic that goes over the back of the head, which means there is no ear pain or irritation. They can also drop down around your neck when not needing so there is less chance of contamination if you take them off and leave them through the roof. We would expect other states to follow. This is the new normal and we don’t really see people going back to how things were any time soon.” Getting components has been a challenge though says Dunn. “When Covid first hit and we started making masks, we bought all the elastic we could find from our suppliers in Australia–we cleaned them out. Now that there are many manufacturers making masks, we have had to rely on our China suppliers to get components to us.” Annabel Trends’ masks are a little different to others. Most masks go over the ears, but Annabel Trends’ masks have

somewhere, explains Dunn. Besides face masks, the company also offers a bandana style tube mask called a Happy wrap, which can be doubled or tripled over to create a mask and is great alternative to the traditional face mask; purse sized sanitiser, a flat spray pack that can fit in your purse or pocket; purse sized soap leaves; and, Touchy, a new tool that enables you to open doors, touch key pads like at ATMs, and push lift buttons etc, without using your finger. You can attach it to your keyring and use it in public spaces.

Keep your distance Aromababy launched a limited edition range of fun, fabric face masks and founder Catherine Cervasio says the idea was sparked whilst sitting in the waiting room at a medical centre recently. “It’s near impossible to practice 20  giftguideonline.com.au

trends

‘social distancing’ under some circumstances–for example when a health professional needs to examine a facial or upper body injury or even during a mammogram. “I thought about ways otherwise healthy patients could potentially reduce their own breathing onto medical staff and decided a fashionable face mask may be the answer. I had a mask made for the appointment and began to wear it regularly since then. People started asking if Aromababy sold the masks so I decided to manufacture a quantity locally.” Aromababy’s selection of prints includes red roses, soft florals, cotton gingham and even Mickey Mouse. They are machine washable, reversible and have two full loops of elastic to keep the mask in place which means children can easily use them. Cervasio believes face masks are a sign of things to come–at the very least in the short term, three to six months. With a number of countries already recommending people wear some form of face covering outside of their October 2020  21

However, the masks weren’t quite practical when exercising so the company switched to Active Snoods, made from single layer high wicking fabric and are much easier to breathe through when racing up a hill, jogging in the park and working out in public. The protective scarf for face and neck has been specifically designed for exercise and can be folded into a double or triple layer to suit your comfort and protection requirements. “For those who find masks uncomfortable or awkward, Active Snoods will provide a comfortable,

As with all of its masks, a portion of the proceeds is used to sponsor masks for those in need. To date, the company has given out almost 2,000 masks to those in vulnerable communities in the Western Cape. “The fact that buying Snoods from BACK TO CONTENTS
