Prepare to enter the Amazon jungle

With Amazon now included within almost every conversation in the lead-up to an imminent pre-Christmas launch, it is important to understand what is driving the interest among consumers. Research recently released show that almost two-thirds of consumers are worried that Amazon will be a threat to their local retailers, but regardless of this almost half of all consumers are expected to embrace the new player by shopping with Amazon when they do launch. It will come as no surprise that it is the younger, less loyal consumer that it most excited about Amazon’s launch. While same day delivery is the most important feature for 50 per cent of all consumers, this jumps to 69 per cent for consumers aged 18-24. In addition to this three hour delivery is now preferred by 1 in 5 shoppers and a third are prepared to pay for this service. A lot of media commentary has been analysing the recent JB Hi-Fi full year results. Interestingly, the products that are driving JB Hi-Fi’s recent 10 per cent sales growth to over $4.1 billion have been very portable items – phones, drones, cameras, juicers, coffee machines, but they are also very easy to ship using the Amazon model. It is estimated that 44 per cent of Amazon’s local sales will come from the consumer electronics category. Online orders only represent 3.8 per cent of total sales at JB Hi-Fi, but this has increased by 38.4 per cent over the last 12 months. Speaking with locally based executives that have seen Amazon invade other markets, the message is remarkably consistent.

The first thing they say is not to panic, but develop a very clear strategy of differentiation that revolves around servicing your customer base and focusing on core competencies. One of the key trends is that good service continues to deliver repeat business. The second thing they clearly state is not to fight on the Amazon turf by trying to be the cheapest in terms of cost of goods or fulfillment. While trends globally show that consumers like visiting Amazon for product reviews and this is a key driver for traffic, bricks and mortar stores benefit from targeting premium products and price points which is best demonstrated by the rollout and fit outs of the Winning Appliances stores where some brands are paying $250,000 on cabinetry alone to deliver high-end finishes and positioning. Ultimately are you engaging your customers and servicing them so well that they won’t want to go anywhere else? Are you giving them advice or an experience that they want to come back and enjoy or possibly refer to a friend or colleague? It even comes down to being just as polite to someone who calls your store, as walking through the door – as they are now both motivated purchasers. It is the dissatisfied consumer that will breathe life into the online channel and this will be decided by incompetent or competent retailers.

Amazon US fulfilment centre
Amazon Australia prepares fulfilment centre and appoints country manager BY EMILY BENCIC
Amazon will create hundreds of new jobs with the opening of its first Australian fulfilment centre in Dandenong South, Victoria. The retailer will begin recruiting immediately for a range of roles, including operations managers, pickers, packers, systems technicians, and HR specialists. Amazon recently announced its intention to bring a retail offering to Australia and the opening of this 24,000 square metre fulfilment centre is an integral early step in the move towards that goal. Amazon director of operations for Australia, Robert Bruce said, “We
are thrilled to be creating hundreds of new roles in Dandenong South. This is just the start. Over time, we will bring thousands of new jobs to Australia and millions of dollars of investment as well as opening up the opportunity for thousands of Australian businesses to sell at home and abroad through Amazon Marketplace.” The new centre is located in the Pellicano’s M2 Industry Park in Dandenong South, providing easy access to the South Gippsland Highway, Monash Highway and Eastlink. The building is also in close proximity to a wide range of amenities for employees. The lease of the centre
Harvey Norman completes GM restructure Harvey Norman has finalised the restructure of its GM roles with Haydon Myers moving from head office to become the electrical franchisee at the Caringbah store in Sydney’s southern shire. Myers was appointed general manager - home appliances in March 2012 and according to Harvey Norman executive director, David Ackery, he will be an excellent franchisee. “Haydon has been talking to me about franchise opportunities for over a year,” Ackery told Appliance Retailer in an exclusive interview. “We were waiting for the right opportunity and he became the electrical franchisee at the Caringbah store on 1 August, 2017. 6

was facilitated by CBRE’s Industrial & Logistics business. “This new fulfilment centre will stock hundreds of thousands of products which will be available for delivery to customers across Australia when we launch our retail offering. We will be focusing on offering our Australian customers low prices on a great selection of products and can’t wait to get started,” Bruce added. Amazon director of consumables for Germany, Rocco Braeuniger will move to the role of country manager for Amazon Australia in the coming months. He joined Amazon in 2006 and has held a variety of positions during his 11 years at the company.

“Haydon has been replaced in the role of general manager - home appliances, by Lachlan Roach who was most recently a franchisee at Campbelltown and prior to this he was electrical franchisee in Dubbo. Lachlan is a star performer within our business and brings to the role an understanding of the metropolitan and regional dynamics of our business,” Ackery said. The latest staff movements follow the recent shift by Rob Nelson from the role of general manager - AV, to become the new proprietor of the Castle Hill store in Sydney. Camberwell Electrics:
Onwards and upwards after 65 years
BY EMILY BENCIC
C
amberwell Electrics co-owner, Graeme Hawkesford has made the decision to retire after over 40 years with one of the oldest electrical retailers in Victoria, which commenced trading in 1952. Hans Vanderstadt is now the sole owner of Camberwell Electrics. “For Camberwell Electrics, the plan for the remainder of 2017 is to strengthen relationships with suppliers, prepare for a hot summer and to continue our company’s success enjoyed over the past 65 years,” Vanderstadt told Appliance Retailer. “Graeme and I have established Camberwell Electrics over many years as a successful solution retailer, specialising in air-conditioning and appliances. He is an icon within the industry and we share many fond
10

memories. With Graeme’s retirement the main change to the business is to have one clear direction for both staff and suppliers alike, as well as to improve our showroom and displays. It’s onwards and upwards from here. “Our aim is to be a destination store for customers who are building, renovating and extending. A true one-stop shop for kitchen and laundry appliances, air-conditioning, heating, alfresco appliances, home entertainment, solar PV and hot water, home automation and security, all supported by our in-house installation and service department,” he said.
CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES FACING THE RETAIL INDUSTRY “One of the biggest challenges facing the retail industry today, is that some major suppliers only want to support the larger retailers. Many promise to support us; however they fall short
when it comes to the crunch. All we ask from them is to be fair and allow us to achieve the margin we need and deserve, for the service we provide. “The biggest frustration I have seen over my 35 years in retail is constantly chasing targets and suppliers trying to be number one in either a category or as a supplier in the industry. Turnover is vanity – profit is sanity. The biggest opportunity is to sell to a growing market of discerning buyers who are looking for quality appliances,” he said.
AMAZON ON AUSTRALIAN SOIL
Vanderstadt sees Amazon as a logistics and IT company and expects the retailer to experience some challenges in the Australian market. “We have a far smaller population than America and customers are spread sparsely over our vast continent. The type of products they successfully move are smaller items that can be easily man

handled, whereas we see ourselves as a ‘solution retailer’ of products where we offer quality advice, displays, sales and installation,” he said. “To remain ahead of the game we need to differentiate ourselves from the larger volume ‘box move’ retailers and align ourselves with supportive suppliers who offer middle to top end aspirational products while remaining competitive on commodity items. We need to align with suppliers who honestly support our business with product representation, and help to deliver the fair margin we seek. To ensure we have the best possible sales people to provide quality
advice and service to our clients. Our industry is about people, product and profit,” he said. The key to a good relationship with suppliers is “to be honest and open with your communication both for the retailer and from the supplier, and to also have the support from supplier senior management”. “Camberwell Electrics continues to service its many loyal customers, their children and their relatives, who value the friendly, knowledgeable staff who go to great lengths in continuing to provide the best products at the best prices,” he said. Samsung brings a true cinematic experience to Australian lounge rooms
A
determination to improve the lives of Australians through innovation sits at the very core of Samsung’s approach to product development. This applies to all facets of Samsung’s home entertainment offering, striving to bring the very best in picture and sound into Australian homes.
QLED
Samsung has designed QLED technology to deliver immersion from a wide range of angles, helping to ensure a great viewing experience from almost anywhere in the TV room. For Australians looking for a new TV, a key feature that drives the decision making process is the

picture quality. Samsung’s 2017 QLED range represents a leap forward for the brand’s display technology to meet this demand coming from consumers. Samsung’s QLED range pushes picture performance to the next level. With certified 100% colour volume for HDR content, colours remain pure, even at maximum brightness, for images that help re-create the palette of the real-world.1 QLED display also helps capture subtle differences in colour pertaining to brightness. This innovation is a result of Samsung’s adoption of a new Quantum dot alloy material, which helps make it possible for the TV to express a significant range of colour with exceptional detail. Quantum dots help enable Samsung’s QLED range to express deep blacks and rich detail even in light and dark scenes, as well as when the content is being played in a brightly lit or darkened room. Samsung’s Q9 panel generates peak luminance as high as 2,000 nits – the brightest TV panel Samsung has ever brought to market, while the Q8 and Q7 offer 1,500 nits, generating stunningly
bright images incorporating accurate and impeccable colour. Samsung’s QLED range harnesses the innovation of Quantum dot to help bring picture quality closer to the truest representation of what the director of the content you’re watching intended it to be, even at wide viewing angles or in bright rooms. Good looks aren’t just limited to the screen. Boasting premium materials, Samsung’s QLED panels deliver elegance and refinement that look great in a range of settings and from almost any angle. Customers have the choice between the Q9 and Q7’s flat design or the curved elegance of the Q8. Helping to remove ‘cable clutter’ and the frustration many Australians experience when mounting their TV to a wall, Samsung’s QLED range includes a ‘Clear Cable Connection’ for a tidy, minimalist cable solution, and a ‘nogap wall-mount’, which is designed for quick, easy, and flush attachment to the wall (sold separately).2 The range also features an option of two different stands (sold separately) designed to elevate and showcase the QLED TVs; the ‘Studio Stand’, resembles an easel holding a painting, and the sleek ‘Gravity Stand’, is reminiscent of a contemporary sculpture.
THE FRAME
Elegance of design is one of the core pillars on which Samsung has built its QLED range, but it also extends to other categories in Samsung’s TV offering, particularly the innovative The Frame. Awarded ‘Best of Innovation’ at CES 2017 in Las Vegas and recently launched at the Louvre in Paris, The Frame introduces a completely new way to experience visual art and TV content. Utilising ‘Art Mode’, The Frame transforms when switched away from TV viewing to an art and design experience. Instead of fading to black like most TVs, the panel becomes a work of art, displaying content from a range of curated digital art pieces or the user’s own pictures. When in ‘Art Mode’, The Frame has a brightness sensor that adjusts to the levels of light that are in the room, helping The Frame to resemble a piece of framed artwork.3 The Frame is also equipped with a Motion Sensor that is designed to automatically turn the screen off to save power when you leave the room, and turn back on when you return. With three different frame options (sold separately) – white, beige wood, and walnut – and numerous matte layouts, Samsung’s innovation means The Frame can be customised to enhance the design and décor of almost any interior.

FIVE MINUTES WITH… What is your outlook on the retail industry?
As long as the economy isn’t going in the wrong direction, we will see growth in the medium and longer term. As to the shape of retail in Australia, the growth of online sales will continue and probably accelerate in the next few years.
What is your best piece of advice to other retailers?
Quite simply, don’t rest on your laurels. Continuous improvement is an essential element of every successful business. Also, while we need to be focused on our own businesses and what’s happening in the local market, for obvious reasons, it is also very

We are very much focused on delivering a first class in-store experience to our customers. We also have refined our brand and category offering over the last few years which has helped put a bit of space between us and the market. How does your company remain ahead of the game?
Apart from offering a high quality product, we have always taken an entrepreneurial approach to our marketing activities here in Australia. We constantly look for new ways to engage with consumers, build brand loyalty and drive consumer demand, particularly as we sell a seasonal product. We are not afraid to challenge the market with new initiatives or to partner with retailers who want to try something new and drive growth. The other area we invest heavily in is our people. We look to empower and develop our staff and create an environment that nurtures success.

Efficiency at the forefront BY KYMBERLY MARTIN
E
nergy efficiency continues to be a key consideration for consumers when purchasing an air conditioner, according to recent research by Canstar Blue. With talk of rising power prices, more Australians are looking at purchasing an energy efficient air conditioner, rather than a cheaper model. A Canstar Blue survey of 611 adults across Australia found that 45% listed energy efficiency as their deciding factor when purchasing an air conditioner, as opposed to 44% for price. This is a slim margin, but compared to Canstar Blue’s findings in 2016, customers are spending more. In 2017, the average spend was $1,981, compared to $1,901 in 2016. Consumer habits may also be changing. A quarter of respondents, 24%, left their air conditioner on when leaving the house, compared to 29% in 2016 and now 41% who leave their air conditioning on while sleeping, compared to 52% in 2016. With many customers set to pay more in electricity bills this new
fi nancial year, energy efficiency is the main factor that dictates air conditioner use: 62% of survey respondents reduced their use of their air conditioner in the last year to save money on power bills while 69% believed that air conditioning was the single biggest hit to their power bills. GfK data for the year ending May 2017 showed that wall splits hold the biggest segment of the air conditioner market taking an 80% value share and 69% unit share. Total sales rose 5% in units and 2% in value. According to Euromonitor, in a bid to battle the heat, consumers flocked to stores to purchase cooling products, which led to a surge in sales for both air conditioners and fans. Fujitsu General enjoyed a great start to 2017, its best result since 2010, with record retail business so far this year. Cooling and reverse cycle products are performing well, with plenty of opportunity for multi-system air conditioning solutions. Growth has been influenced by the revised ‘Free Money’ promotion, along with a
significant drop in temperature when winter eventually set in. Continued good economic conditions and a buoyant housing market contributed to growth across Australia for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air Conditioners Australia (MHIAA). Climatic conditions including the summer heatwave and the colder winters have worked in the sector's favour as more households invest in reverse cycle systems for yearround use. Panasonic also reported increased market share for air conditioning over the last 12 months. This is being attributed to concerns about higher living costs as consumers invest in a trusted air conditioning brand that offers reliability and energy efficiency. Mitsubishi Electric experienced a record year for 2016 across the total business. High wall mounted split systems performed particularly well, with an increasing adoption of the new GL range. The company has been working closely with retail partners to bring quality product to the market. AR

flexibility with home temperature control, while still providing them with an energy efficient system. Retail sales volume continues to be primarily driven by the Eastern seaboard states of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland, which is where 80% of the population live, according to general manager, sales and marketing, Dave Smith. A guaranteed traffic driver for Fujitsu’s retail partners and dealers is its ‘Free Money’ consumer promotion that provides an ideal incentive for
emerging from the growth of small capacity products. “Consumers are looking to move beyond just heating or cooling large living spaces and focusing on conditioning smaller rooms in the home or dwellings such as bedrooms and studies,” MHIAA senior advisor, Graham Hamilton said. “We continue to push the boundaries of technology and innovation and this is demonstrated through the new Bronte range of air conditioners. The R32 refrigerant used in this range is one of the biggest trends and changes to hit the market as consumers demand products with a lower global warming potential.

“MARKET DATA TELLS US THAT THERE ARE OVER THREE MILLION SPLIT SYSTEMS POTENTIALLY INSTALLED FOR BETWEEN 10 AND 15 YEARS.” Mitsubishi Electric, Zane Barron.
Panasonic has also scored well in the latest Canstar Blue customer satisfaction review with a five star rating. “This is the second year in a row that Panasonic has been rated five-stars for overall satisfaction. Six air conditioner brands in total received the minimum sample size to be included in the ratings, However, Panasonic was the only brand to be rated five-stars, with three brands rated four-stars, and two three-stars.” Panasonic is the only air conditioning brand to have topped Canstar’s ratings three times. The survey also found that consumers are keeping their air conditioner for a fairly long time, with their previous air conditioner seeing out 8.1 years of service. “A lot in the air conditioning world has changed in eight years, and it’s perhaps no surprise why energy efficiency is the major purchasing factor,” De Bella said.

According to Mitsubishi Electric the replacement market in Australia is already growing with industry figures from the Japan Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Industry Association (JRAIA) suggesting that the average system lasts for around 20,000 hours. “Market data tells us that there are over three million split systems potentially installed for between 10 and 15 years,” Living Environment Group general manager national sales, Zane Barron said. Mitsubishi Electric Australia has conducted research with customers to assist retail partners to engage in the replacement market. “Customers are more educated now about what they like and dislike about existing air conditioning systems. Brands that offer quiet and easy operation, reliability and high energy efficiency will perform well.” Barron said the company performed strongly in all states in general, but echoed the view
of others that sales were softer in Western Australia. Last season saw the launch of the Dimplex iSeries, the company’s first range of inverter split system air conditioners which continue to sell well. “We entered the window box air conditioner market, starting off with two models, which sold out in four weeks of stock landing,” marketing coordinator Stacey Pogorecki said.

Queensland and New South Wales continue to be the stand-out states so far this year in both domestic and light commercial areas for Teco. Fujitsu’s already popular advanced technologies, including Human Sensor Control and high efficiency compressors, to offer long term energy efficiency,” Dave Smith said. The indoor units also communicate with the app, enabling users to opt in to receive error notifications by email or SMS. The addition of new compact outdoor units has added to the comprehensive multi-system offering, providing consumers with more flexibility and faster installation. With more flexibility to accommodate the diversity of the modern home, the 10kW unit has the capacity to cover two to five rooms, and the 12.5Kw outdoor unit can have up to six indoor units connected. With a wide range of indoor units to choose from, there’s a solution to fit almost any application. The popular style of indoor air conditioning is reflected in the Lifestyle series of wall mounted units. Recently four reverse cycle air conditioning systems met the Choice recommended criteria, in categories including cooling efficiency, heating
efficiency, brand reliability and brand loyalty. “Receiving the Choice recommended stamp of approval for the four lifestyle units highlights the continued quality and efficiency of Fujitsu General products,” Smith said. This year, MHIAA is introducing the Bronte range of air conditioners to consumers and will launch the Avanti range in Q4 2017. “By focusing on being the best technologically, MHIAA has now expanded its focus to incorporate an Italian design with Avanti that will give consumers a stylish new air conditioning system,” Graham Hamilton said. The new products carry improved features and technological inclusions such as the R32 refrigerant, optional Wi-Fi control and a range of allergen fi lters designed to purify the air. conditions”. He said these new products will suit consumers looking to upgrade or install a more powerful system with two Bronte models now recommended by Choice. According to Hamilton, Choice reports indicate that the company has outperformed competitors by scoring in the top percent in terms of cooling efficiency. “Each state is continuing to gain greater market share and our new products will help achieve this. As a company, we focus on consumer needs to ensure that we combine thoughtful innovation and craftsmanship to bring the consumer a product that is not only technologically advanced but also on trend. We continually monitor how the R32 refrigerant is performing in our units and how it ensures that our units are energy efficient.” The latest air conditioner systems to arrive from Panasonic are the Aero Series of reverse-cycle and cooling-only models. Featuring a new slim design that is narrower in depth, these protrude less from the wall to blend more subtly with room interiors. This new styling gave Panasonic an IF Design Award in Europe. The unit features a gloss white fi nish and a softly rounded horizontal panel with two tapered sides. To complement the design, the new series features controlled airflow, purified healthy air and energy savings. Aerowings blades control airflow to provide ‘shower cooling’, which directs cool air across the ceiling to shower down naturally, spreading over a wider area of a room, minimising any uncomfortable direct airflow chill. When fast cooling is required, the blades direct airflow downwards, delivering concentrated cool air the moment the air conditioner is switched on. For those concerned about bacteria and allergens, Panasonic’s revolutionary nanoe-G air purifying feature enhances indoor air quality, removing 99% of airborne bacteria, viruses and mould. It also catches and deactivates 99% of bacteria and viruses on surfaces and in the fi lter. ne retailer confi rming strong sales for the previous cooling season was Dominic McClelland, who told Appliance Retailer it was all due to the long the hot summer experienced on the NSW South Coast. “Sales for air conditioners and portable cooling products were close to double from the previous corresponding period,” he said. Mitsubishi and Panasonic reverse cycle inverter split systems were the top sellers, boosted by strong demand for Noirot and Dimplex. While recognising that consumers are becoming more aware of the latest technology, McClelland said it is not the main motivator in the purchase decision. “Defi nitely energy efficiency and noise levels would be the main influencers. Also, that we provide the full service of in-home quoting, supply and installation, making the whole process seamless for our clients,” he said. “Price is defi nitely a factor, but quality brands and being

able to provide a complete solution for the customer would be the bigger incentive. The biggest influencer that we have absolutely no control over is a long hot summer!” Media attention around increasing power generation costs due to generator closures and higher costs for sustainable alternatives is defi nitely a growing challenge for the category. “If the Northern Hemisphere summer and an El Niño effect, in our part of the world, is any indicator, we should be in for another good season.” When it comes to fans the most popular list includes Dyson, Sunbeam tower fans, Dimplex, Kambrook and Heller range of affordable fans. Dyson fan models with the new air purifier feature have been a stand out, McClelland said. Batemans Bay region has a predominantly retired population of around 30,000 with a large tourist intake through the summer months, with McClelland describing the area as Canberra’s “summer playground”. ost retailers and major suppliers reaped the rewards of a long hot summer, putting up the ‘out of stock’ signs. Brands that offer more than just cooling features clearly benefit too when it comes to year-round selling options. While safety and efficiency cannot be understated, style is also playing a big part in purchase decisions along with purification benefits. Stand type fans hold the biggest chunk of the cooling fans market with the latest GfK data showing these models have a 53% market share in units. Tower fans are the most expensive, with average RRPs sitting on $143. Cooling fan sales for the year ending May 2017 were unchanged from the previous year although the value of the market increased by 4%. The prolonged heatwave affecting most of the continent, particularly during late February and early March, resulted in strong sales for air treatment products, including fans according to Euromonitor.
While air conditioners are subject to energy efficiency requirements and must carry an energy rating label, portables and evaporative units are not subject to energy efficiency regulations under this framework. “Work is underway to improve requirements for these products and address various issues such as inconsistent MEPS levels,” senior research analyst, Hianyang Chan said. Dyson experienced a fast start to the cooling season following the hottest summer on record in Q1 2017. Dyson said growth was also driven by its commitment to connected, intelligent technology as well as strong relationships with retail partners. The company remains optimistic about the cooling market for the back half of the year, particularly as the latest Environmental Control range includes year-round solutions that deliver multi-function benefits for the home. The launch of the advanced Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link purifier fan heater was said to have made the biggest impact on the category.
Another contributing factor was the “advanced purification of the air filter” to help combat indoor air pollution. Australia’s record breaking summer resulted in huge demand for a cooling solution, with retailer shelves emptying quicker than they could be restocked, according to De’Longhi. The increased number of sweltering days resulted in the company selling out of portable air conditioners. Sales for fans were also tracking well above last year. The 2016/17 season, although starting slowly ended well for Glen Dimplex too. And while the hot weather didn’t seem to hit Western Australia, it was a ‘sell-out’ of all Dimplex fans and portable cooling for the rest of the country, because as the company saw it, portable air conditioner sales rely on extreme temperatures, in excess of 35°C, for four or more days. With the cost of electricity set to rise by 20% in FY18, consumers are making more educated purchasing decisions when it comes to energy efficiency for cooling products, was the view put forward by Milners. ulti-functionality, particularly with the inclusion of air purification benefits and unique design, is key in driving purchase consideration for Dyson’s Environmental Control products that includes purifiers, humidifiers and fans. With this firmly in mind, Dyson engineers developed the Pure Hot+Cool Link purifier fan heater. In addition to purifying indoor air year round, this machine automatically keeps the room at the target temperature using thermostat heat control and Air Multiplier technology for long range heat distribution in winter and smooth, powerful air in summer. Up to 200 litres of air projected per second, provides a long-range stream of purified air around the whole room. While air purifiers are known to help capture pollen, mould, bacteria and odours to help clean the air and combat indoor air pollution, some machines struggle to trap ultrafine particles and to distribute cleaner air evenly around the whole room. In response, Dyson unveiled its latest purifier range with a new filter to improve gas capture while trapping ultrafine particles. Users can also track air quality with the Dyson Link app which gives live reporting on both indoor and outdoor air quality, based on a location of choice. Designed and developed for iOS and Android, the app also shows humidity and temperature graphs. Aesthetics and finishes are starting to play a big part in the portable cooling segment, according to De’Longhi. “Consumers are desperate to cool down when the weather reaches more than 35 degrees Celsius, but they

are also looking for something that will either complement their home interior or discretely sit in a corner and still provide a cool atmosphere,” junior category manager, Dunya Abdurahmanovic said. As with any seasonal category, the biggest factor is the demand that the weather brought late in the season, she pointed out. “Depth of range and brand equity in the De’Longhi comfort space also has an influence in this category as consumers move toward a brand name they trust.”

Dimplex has added to its broad product range to ensure it caters to all consumer cooling needs. As for states that do well, Glen Dimplex product manager for seasonal, Stacey Pogorecki said NSW and Victoria generally outsell all other states, simply due to population. “As a percentage of population however, this varies season on season, depending on where the extreme temperatures arrive.”

Portable evaporative coolers and fans performed well for GBI Sales in 2016/17 summer, general manager Wayne Marshall said. He continued: “Outdoor cooling is still growing as more alfresco areas are being built. Sales for evaporative coolers have also experienced a sales resurgence over the past six years. As the oldest form of cooling, it has suffered slower sales in earlier years due to the price of split systems and PAC’s. However with low running costs, health benefits and low noise features evaporative coolers have made a strong comeback.” Indoor health proved to be the trend winner for the category, according to Milners and the company expects this trend will continue into

“While pedestal and desk fans are still the biggest sellers, we have found that consumers are starting to make a more decisive purchase, adding style as well as functionality to their home,” product manager, Fiona Trajkovski said. “Given that cooling fans can be used outside the traditional summer months, and moved from room to room, consumers want a fan they can leave in a room without it being intrusive.” According to Teco national business development manager, Trevor Francis, Queensland and New South Wales boomed from sales of portables: “but all states performed well in this category if they were blessed with the right weather”. Honeywell CL20 Indoor Cooler
As its hero products have the added benefit of air purification with its cooling fan functionality, Dyson said there is an education job to be done in communicating the importance and relevance of indoor air purification to stimulate consumer demand and drive more shoppers’ in-store. The Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link purifier fan heater purifies the air as well as heats and cools. It incorporates Dyson’s Jet Focus Control technology which is also available in Dyson’s AM09 Hot+Cool fan heater, designed for both personal and whole room use. The introduction of MEPS standards will be a positive step forward in the portable air conditioning category, De’Longhi’s Dunya Abdurahmanovic said, adding it was important for retailers to note that while a large kilowatt capacity unit may seem like the consumer is getting more ‘bang for their buck’, it is actually the technology behind the unit

that will achieve more efficient cooling results at a lower running cost, “which is what the consumer ultimately demands”. De’Longhi Water to Air technology uses the cooling effects of water to cool the condenser, resulting in colder air and a lower running cost in one of its most efficient portable air conditioner models, the PACWE1120ECO. “Promoting and communicating the features of the range through point-of-sale (POS) has had great cut-through with consumers walking into stores on hot days, without really having much knowledge or having done any prior research,” she said. De’Longhi is also focussing on a uniform message across training, online and POS to ensure retention of vital knowledge. “The objective is to keep the message clear and concise while the aim is to educate, not confuse the consumer with overly technical content.” The Dimplex WhirlTech Air Circulators will launch this season, with three models that oscillate at 360 degrees and a head that can pivot up to 90 degrees for precisely angled airflow. The system includes a unique combination of aerodynamic elements which results in a room penetrating, focused, swirling vortex of air. It will circulate cool air from air conditioning, stale air with fresh air, and warm air when used in conjunction with a heater. The hero product within the new range is the DCACE20. GBI Sales nominated alfresco models as a steady source of business.

This range will continue to be promoted in the coming season as it claims to offer a cooling application not available in other cooling formats such as refrigerated air conditioning. The range of both Honeywell and Excelair will remain for the coming season with the exception of the introduction of the Honeywell CL20 indoor cooler that will fi ll a void in the range. Earlier this year Teco expanded its range of cooling-only portable air conditioning units to cater for locations where installation of other forms of air conditioning is not a viable option. The new range comprises 3.5kW, 4.1kW and 4.1kW reverse cycle models. As more consumers embrace the use of smartphones and tablets, Teco is offering both 4.1kW models with WiFi as standard. In an effort to conserve energy and keep costs down, consumers searched for cooling appliances offering maximum cooling efficiency, but minimal energy consumption, bumping up the numbers for the Vornado Air Circulator range. “As temperatures soared, so did sales, as consumers recognised the Vornado difference,” Kirsten Pride said. Vortex Technology claims to evenly disburse cool air around the whole room in less time than a traditional portable cooling appliance or air conditioner. Placing the Vornado Air Circulator directly in front of the air conditioning unit, results in cooler air being circulated more quickly and efficiently. There are three different sizes available, from a desk fan, to a medium sized unit for bedrooms and a larger unit for bigger living spaces. CDB Goldair is expanding the Scandi range, which now includes tripod, desk, pedestal and tower fans. The company is also introducing more trend-based models with matte fi nishes and retro designs. Consumers not shy to splurge BY EMILY BENCIC

he Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported that Australian consumers splashed out over a billion dollars a day during the 2016 Christmas trade period (second-half of November and all of December). The record spending spree of $46.58 billion was an increase of 4.3% from $44.63 billion for the same period in 2015. New South Wales shoppers spent the most for Christmas with a total spend of over $15 billion, followed by Victoria at close to $12 billion and Queensland at around $9.2 billion.
Consumer electronics were front and centre for Christmas 2016, according to GfK data. In the top five categories to register the highest change in value from November 2016 to December 2016, drones took the top position with growth of 290%, followed by mini speakers at 183%, camcorders at 145%, wearables at 123%, closely trailed by headphones at 116%. These categories, excluding headphones, also recorded the highest change in volume over the same period. In small kitchen appliances, although the overall category dipped 9% to $888 million (GfK MAT May 2017) Breville holds a strong position in the growth
categories, including pressure cookers (up 27%), manual espresso machines (up 18%), mini ovens (up 7%) and sandwich presses (up 4%). Breville is also number one in food processors and juicers. Summer is “blending season” with a noticeable spike in blending over the past two years, according to Vitamix country manager, Euan Mitchell. “Research shows that over 50 million smoothies are made at home every month. Each Christmas in particular, we see a spike in people buying Vitamix blenders as gifts and with our new Ascent Series on sale this Christmas we are expecting sales to soar,” he said. AR

o capitalise on the growth in both volume and value in the fully automatic coffee segment, De’Longhi will release two new machines for Christmas 2017. “De’Longhi conducted a research study at the beginning of the year and identified a number of interesting outtakes. One of the main themes to emerge was a desire for technology and connectivity. This trend is on point with our new coffee machines,” senior category manager, Allison Cupillari said. The November to December period presents a real opportunity for Kenwood kitchen mixers with internal research showing that one in every two mixers bought at Christmas is for a gift, category manager for food preparation, Marcus Lo Russo said. “With our unmatched range of over 20 attachments, retail staff can tailor their sales message for each consumer and help them give the perfect gift. Over the Christmas period, consumers are more likely to invest in luxurious clothing, such as suits and silk dresses, and therefore require quality linen care products to better take care of them, according to Braun junior category manager, Dunya Abdurahmanovic. “In linen care, one of the biggest trends for 2017 is consumers trading up from a traditional iron to a steam station. Nobody wants to spend more time ironing than necessary, and investing in a steam station allows timepoor, fashion-conscious consumers to quickly and efficiently work through the pile of crumpled clothing. action they are sold into investing more money to save more time,” she said. Groupe SEB marketing manager, Marianne Arenas continues to see a growing interest in all-in-one appliances as consumers look to timesaving solutions that provide quick, easy and healthy meals. “With this in mind, Tefal continues to diversify its range with innovative products that offer convenience and versatility for every consumer and budget. Ahead of Christmas, we will be supporting our grill line-up, refreshing our multicooker offering and ensuring our Cuisine Companion consumers have a great experience through online engagement,” she said. Christmas and the summer months are all about entertaining and creating fresh salads, dishes, dips, and healthy drink combinations, according to Breville business manager for cooking and food preparation, Sharon Lenzner. “It comes as no surprise that widely searched recipes on Google for November 2016 included guacamole,

Sunbeam is driving the breakfast category with over 19% MAT value growth. “We continue to exploit the need for new colourful stylish kettles and toasters as a quick and easy way to update kitchens,” product category manager, Katie Cannaby said. In the lead up to Christmas, Sunbeam will be releasing two new kettles and toasters. Furthermore, Sunbeam expects the Christmas gift boom around personal blenders to be well and truly over in 2017, with the personal blending market in massive decline. “Customers will move back to traditional, more versatile blending appliances again,” she said. With this in mind, Sunbeam will be launching a first-to-market blender with two blade technology, which draws the food into the vortex so no food is left behind. Smeg head of brand, Tamara Buchanan said the Smeg espresso machine, ECF01, has had phenomenal success, and there are a no signs of a slow-down. “We are getting excellent feedback on the quality of the coffee and the colour range, so we expect the coffee machine to be at the top of a lot of people’s Christmas wish list.” 42

Nicholas Fry from Leading Appliances BY EMILY BENCIC
L
eading Appliances is hopeful, and confident, of a vibrant and active market, and expects economic conditions to show sustained signs of improvement ahead of the Christmas period, according to group manager, Nicholas Fry. “Leading Appliances will continue to be very active in the market promoting our stores, our brands and our great offers through TV advertising, catalogues and eDM campaigns,” he said. Fry is hopeful of a long and hot summer to boost refrigeration and air conditioning sales. “Of course the TV market continues to excite consumers and I would expect there to be some great offers on large-screen TV’s over the Christmas period,” he added. He believes consumers are more discerning than ever and it is no longer just about price, but rather service, knowledge and advice, “something that Leading Appliances prides itself on, as well as ‘value added’ offers”.
With this in mind, he shared a positive attitude toward supplier promotions. “They assist in maintaining higher prices, removing the need to discount, by providing a value added product or offer which is beneficial to the consumer and protective of the retailers margin in assisting to close the sale. It’s a win-win-win situation, protecting margins and driving sales, so the supplier, the retailer and the enduser all win,” he said. “The Leading Appliances brand axiom is ‘Real Service, Real People’ and we place great importance on the level of service we provide our customers: knowledgeable, friendly, professional. I believe this remains a major factor in the purchase decision for the consumer. If the sales person knows the product and is helpful and informative, this greatly assists the customer’s resolve. Other factors include the brand, the cosmetics, the features, the price, and if there is a value added offer attached to the product, such as a gift-with-purchase or cashback, this can influence the final choice,” he concluded. AR BARBECUES
OUTLOOK
Interest in charcoal cooking ignites growth BY EMILY BENCIC
B
arbecues showed positive growth of 2% in 2016, to reach $356 million, according to data from Euromonitor. Charcoal barbecues saw the strongest growth of 4%, attributed to TV cooking shows and barbecue restaurants echoing the ability of charcoal barbecues to produce better results than gas barbecues, senior research analyst, Hianyang Chan said. “This resulted in more Australian consumers becoming willing to experiment with 50

charcoal. However, it is worth noting that gas barbecues remained the most popular type, accounting for 95% of the retail value sales as these products offer consumers a quicker and more convenient cooking experience.” GfK data only tracks indoor electric barbecues and grills from brands such as Sunbeam and George Foreman. In this category, value dropped 13% and units declined by 23% from May 2016 to May 2017. Table type barbecues are still the most popular type accounting for 71%
in units and 51% in value compared to other stand types, the data reported. Eurolinx continues to see steady growth in this category, adding to its outdoor offering this year with a new range of ILVE wine cellars and new rangehood, specifically designed for ILVE barbecues. “We have been working with our retail partners to promote the range and I believe this has been one of the major contributors to our success,” marketing manager, Daniel Bertuccio said. TRENDS
Alfresco no longer an after-thought BY EMILY BENCIC
I
LVE’s Daniel Bertuccio believes the outdoor kitchen has taken on its own identity this year, being treated as its own space and no longer an extra room. “It’s now a room that must have its own budget,” he said. “We feed off worldwide trends, as well as rely on our retail partners and consumers to tell us what they want, and what they are doing in regards to renovations. Most renovation shows on TV also have a major part to play in what drives trends. Sydney and Queensland are performing extremely well in the outdoor space, but the climate also lends itself nicely to this. But in general, all states are doing well
for ILVE in the outdoor space,” he said. Arisit national sales and marketing manager for specialist brands, Rachael Williams echoed these comments, noting that alfresco areas are being incorporated into the build of a house, rather than an after-thought. “Alfresco areas are another room in the house and are being fitted out with new and innovative products. The influx of American style meat restaurants, food trucks and TV cooking programs is massive in Australia and consumers want to replicate that experience at home. It’s not uncommon for one of our customers to want a pizza oven, a high quality BBQ, alfresco fridge, sink tap, dishwasher and a wok,” she said.
ILVE – Daniel Bertuccio
“The issue with alfresco products is the quality of the product to withstand the harsh environments here in Australia. Cheaply constructed appliances rust and fail after only a couple of seasons. Customers are realising investing in good quality products is worthwhile
AR BARBECUES in the long run and are cheaper than replacing,” she added. GBI Sales has also seen outdoor living becoming more popular, and as a result, the BBQ has become an important addition to the new and existing home market, according to general manager, Wayne Marshall.
GBI Sales – Wayne Marshall
“The Australian standard has made it essential to have a BBQ rangehood included in the specification. The laws governing installation means it is imperative to have an approved rangehood as it is no longer acceptable or legal to install just any rangehood where the BBQ is in an area that is deemed to be enclosed, such as a room
52
Appliance Retailer September 2017
that has in excess of two full height walls. It is for this reason the category is becoming very popular and is growing rapidly,” he explained. Shriro is another player in the BBQ category witnessing a trend toward home barbecuing and meat smoking, particularly slow cooking. “The Everdure by Heston Blumenthal Hub and Fusion make charcoal cooking easy with ignition being as simple as loading the charcoal into the BBQ and pressing the ignition button,” communications manager, Sandra Cal said. “This style of charcoal grilling infuses the meat with a smokey flavour, also reflecting the BBQ smoking trend coming out of the USA that’s continuing to become increasingly popular. In addition to using charcoal to experiment with smoke and flavour, there’s also scope to explore different wood chips to offer a variety of new smoke flavours,” she added. Combining fast and slow cooking for an enhanced cooking result is always a challenge, even for professional chefs. The PortaDine Mobile Hydra Gas BBQ
solves this challenge with its unique water cooling system. Consumers want to achieve restaurant-quality food at home. Fast and slow cooking means achieving a crispy exterior and a uniformly cooked interior, traditionally achieved at highend restaurants when food is cooked under two temperatures at two physical stages, the company said. The flameless gas-fired ceramic infrared heatwave generator is designed at a critically calculated heat wavelength to produce a radiant controlled heat temperature above 400 degrees Celsius. It is positioned vertically to oppose the generated vapour of approximately 100 degrees Celsius emanating from the moisture tray. It is softly directed outwards by the ceramic burner pressure and subsequently drafted upwards to sandwich the food in between and create the heat potential difference to achieve the hybrid cooking function in one stage. Hybrid and moisture infusion functions are a must when it comes to flavour, colour and caramelisation of the food, according to PortaDine. AR
RANGES
A-grade rangehoods complement high power BBQs BY EMILY BENCIC
T
he recently launched ILVE BBQ rangehood (RRP $3,999), suitable for 90cm, 100cm or 120cm barbecues, has been designed and purpose built for ILVE appliances and is best suited for outdoor barbecues or when very high air extraction is required. Within the brushed stainless steel A-Frame body resides a powerful, highspeed fan that removes cooking odours, smoke and vapour, while the filters trap grime and grease. The filters are easy to clean and dishwasher-safe. Built-in LED lights provide a natural brightness, while the streamlined electronic control panel ensures quiet air extraction. There will be a range of Artusi BBQs and outdoor beverage fridges arriving in October, and Eurolinx is looking to expand the ILVE range in 2018. Arisit offers three brands of BBQs including Capital, Steel and Smart, as well as high powered hoods from Sirius. The company also offer two brands of pizza ovens, Alfa and Clementi, both made in Italy, in addition to Husky fridges and an alfresco specific line up. These have heated doors to stop condensation from humidity and enclosed casings to stop rodents and the elements affecting the fridge. GBI Sales has been supplying Excelsior BBQ rangehoods in Australia for seven years and general manager, Wayne Marshall says the company is determined to become “the best performing, multi-featured off-theshelf supplier of BBQ rangehoods in Australia” with regular improvements to design and functionality. “We started with 304 stainless steel, slimline design, 850m³/ hr motors, aluminium filters and halogen lights. Our new range of Excelsior BBQ rangehoods, released in August, offer

our most significant update since we entered the category. We have changed the design to improve performance and it allows us to supply up to three 1300m³ hr motors, 15mm baffle filters for draw resistance and angled filters to ensure the smoke is held in position until the motors can clear the smoke. “It has two grease trays that can be easily removed from the hood and cleaned regularly and semi-rigid ducting to avoid the flow of smoke being obstructed. There is a remote control for easy operation, and with laws demanding we install 120cm above the cooking surface, it puts the controls around 220cm above the floor,” he said. Everdure by Heston Blumenthal BBQs from Shriro feature rotiscope technology on the inbuilt electric rotisserie, allowing adjustable heights and turning at three revolutions per minute – in line with Heston Blumenthal’s technique of flipping meat every 20 seconds to achieve a crisp flavoursome exterior without being overcooked in the centre, perfect for slow cooking. The Fast Flame Ignition System of the Hub and Fusion in the charcoal range allows users to light it with the touch of a button. The electric element gets charcoal going quickly and it will be ready to start cooking in as little as 10 minutes. Meanwhile, the gas range features fast ignition with instant searing and variable flame control. The Mobile Hydra Gas BBQ from PortaDine is a portable, 3-in-1 BBQ ideal for parks, beaches, camping, road rest areas, and perfect for open balconies, back yards and pool sides. It features an infrared honeycomb ceramic burner for uniform cooking and heat distribution. It also boasts dual fuel operation, multi-position kebab vertical holders, as well as spit and mesh rotisserie grill kits. AR www.applianceretailer.com.au

FROM THE FLOOR
Ben Whitford from Whitfords Home Appliances BY EMILY BENCIC
O
ver the past few seasons, the BBQ category has been growing for Whitfords Home Appliances in Sydney’s Five Dock, and manager, Ben Whitford expects the growth to continue. “BBQs are central in most Australian homes and customers are making them an important feature. With different styles on offer and a vast collection of brands on offer, the consumer has endless choice,” he said.
“Built-in BBQs are the strongest category for us with a great selection from key brands including BeefEater, Capital, DCS, Steel and ILVE, with some also offering cabinetry, rangehoods and alfresco refrigeration. Carrying a wide selection of European and American brands ensures that the customer is buying good quality, reliable products and there is a price point for every budget,” he added. As for supplier promotions, Whitford believes they are a significant factor in driving customers in store. “It is very important that the
promotion is relevant to the product or category. For example, Capital recently ran a promotion wherein with the purchase of a selected BBQ, consumers received a free bar fridge, and it had a great response.” So what other factors help drive foot traffic? “Consumers are always going to research online and find the best deal. Therefore, staff knowledge is extremely important in our industry. We have such well-informed customers today, due to social media, that our staff need to be up to date with the latest technology and features,” Whitford said. “Our staff are always keen to learn about new products, but it comes down to how the supplier presents it to them. Most brands give hands-on training, as well as one-on-one sessions. This enables staff to share their knowledge with the customer and find the right product for individual desires,” he added. His final words were on the muchanticipated entry of Amazon into the Australian market. “Amazon is on everyone’s mind at the moment and will be until they arrive. Time will tell how it affects the appliance market. I believe the online world is becoming stronger but bricks and mortar stores are still going to dominate when it comes to purchasing appliances, especially at the premium end of the market. “The consumer is always going to want to touch and feel the products before they buy. We continue to transform and improve our showroom to create a friendly and inviting environment for our customers to come in and experience what we have to offer.” AR

AR RETAIL RULES
The rise of third party reviews in retail Filipe Pennacchio from GfK discusses the opportunities for retailers to provide shoppers with more information in-store.
A
ccessing information from third parties has never been easier. Given that 47% of the global population was connected to the internet in 2016, almost half of the global population could potentially share their experiences and opinions on an online platform. When it comes to shopping, consumer opinions, experiences and reviews are of great (and rising) importance. Some stats from GfK’s FutureBuy Australian 2016 data underline the impact of third parties in the buying process: • 38% said their social networks have become as important as other information sources, when making the best product choices (up 7% from 2015)
• 44% agreed that online reviews from shoppers/users were an important factor in making shopping decisions • 42% of Asia Pacific participants stated that the opinions of family/friends are a very important factor in their shopping decisions (and 49% for 18-34 year olds). These numbers are higher than the traditional methods stores use: • 27% agreed that flyers/store circulars play an important role in a purchase • 26% agreed that online advertising influences their purchase decisions. The rise of third party influencers isn’t limited to online tools – physical word-of-mouth is by no means dead - however it did benefit significantly from them. Virtual channels such as video platforms, social media, instant messaging platforms, and blogs play a major role in increasing the reach of reviews from both opinion leaders and among peers. In fact, the fastest growing touchpoints in Australia are to do with
third party reviews, as the below table demonstrates. The plus and minus numbers on the right are the % change from the previous year.
WHAT CAN RETAILERS DO TO LEVERAGE THIRD PARTY REVIEWS?
By offering a space where consumers can rate and write feedback – Dan Murphys does this well online. But there’s opportunity to do it in-store as well, as Best Buy in the US do using QR codes on their at-shelf tickets. Scan the code and see a review of that product by a customer of that store. AR
Or developing questionnaires to stimulate responses that target topics related to the product/service.
Figure 1: ‘Important’ and ‘Very Important’ communications touchpoints growth, 2016 versus 2015.
In short, third party reviews and word-of-mouth can be used to increase traffic, penetration and spend via uptrade. How are you going to leverage this increasing trend?
