Wine and dine with goldmine sideline

I

n 1997, Jean-Marie Simart was the Asian head of a Swiss Bank based in Singapore and he was presented with the wine opportunity of a lifetime. A businessman had $20 million worth of the rare French wine, Château Pétrus. Simart needed to fi nd an expert in Bordeaux wines to help understand more about these $10.000 bottles – and this was how he met Laurent Ducourneau. And while the $20 million deal in Château Pétrus never eventuated, Simart and Ducourneau bonded over their love of wine and created a $20 million business of their own selling products for up to $10,000. The business is Vintec and it was acquired by Electrolux earlier this year to complement its other portfolio of appliance brands.

After decades in banking, Simart made a promise to himself that he would quit and never work for someone ever again.

In February 1999, the fi rst container of wine cabinets arrived at his house in Rose Bay. His garage doubled as a showroom for his fi rst meeting with buyers from David Jones, and when they asked about the energy rating of the products, Simart had to admit he did not know what they were talking about.

Over the last 18 years, Jean-Marie and his wife Leonie have incrementally improved their products with better compressors that deliver the specific temperature and humidity controlled environment suited to storing wine.

Rather than following the traditional refrigerator business cycle, wine cabinet consumers behave differently, with many buying a second unit shortly after their fi rst or a couple of years later when larger capacity is needed.

One of the hallmarks of the business has been service – from arguing with

multi-millionaires screaming down the phone after receiving the wrong coloured cabinet to quibbles from passionate wine connoisseurs who are quickly diffused once the topic of collecting is raised – the job description for the owner and operator of a wine cabinet businessman is diverse. Even with a history of back complaints, JeanMarie excused himself halfway through a lunch at a well-known Sydney restaurant when he noticed tradesmen were delivering one of his cabinets to the maître d’ and personally helped bring them in.

As a dedicated specialist, Vintec was able to cultivate relationships with identities from the restaurant community such as Tetsuya Wakuda, Guillaume Brahimi and Neil Perry that would normally cost his competitors hundreds of thousands of dollars in endorsements.

To take the business to the next level, Electrolux will look to refine the back end processes while keeping the specialist focus up front and the 11,000-member strong Vintec Club of loyal members consisting of previous purchasers is a key ingredient.

Other opportunities include expanding the business into other parts of the world including the USA which represents unchartered waters or adding some more tech to Vintec with features such as appenabled temperature notifications.

Until very recently the Vintec business was still a small business with daily sales tallied on an A4 sheet of paper. In the future, no doubt Electrolux will look forward to turning a new page.

hen Dick Smith went into administration and stores around the country began closing their doors, Ruslan Kogan saw an opportunity to play a role in rescuing the brand in a mutually beneficial way that would grow his business and benefit customers.

“DickSmith.com.au is a new channel to market for us that allows us to further leverage the existing operating platforms and infrastructure of Kogan.com. We are always open to acquisition opportunities but it’s not our focus,” Kogan told AR. “Dick Smith is an iconic Australian brand with close to 50 years of history and brand equity. It’s a brand we all know and have at some stage loved. I used to visit Dick Smith stores as a kid to compare computer parts all the time,” he continued.

Consumer electronics is the flagship category for Kogan, despite the company selling over 20,000 products across a range of sectors. Apple, Samsung, Kogan, Sony, Komodo, LG, Fortis, Ovela and Canon are among the top selling brands.

PRIVATE LABEL A PROVEN SUCCESS

The private label business delivers healthy margins and enables a price leadership position to differentiate Kogan from its competitors.

“Unlike many others, we started as a private label business and for the first four and a half years, Kogan.com was exclusively private label. It’s a pillar of our business. However, it does bring risks that many retailers are not equipped to handle.

Because it is part of our foundation, our culture has grown to be a data analytics culture. We often joke that we are a statistics business masquerading as a retailer. To run a successful private label operation, you need to have your finger on the pulse. You need to know what’s in demand. You need to know what’s trending. We don’t create demand, we service demand,” Kogan said.

When asked about the imminent arrival of global retail giants such as Amazon: “we are excited by that prospect because we think they will do great things to boost the profile of online retail locally. Amazon is already here in a big way and there has been talk for many years about their potential launch in Australia. They are a top 20 site in Australia with more traffic than news. com.au and realestate.com.au”.

“We see Amazon as an opportunity to supercharge the growth of the Australian online retail sector. A rising tide lifts all boats.”

eBay is the fifth most popular site in Australia and eBay is used as an additional channel by Kogan. “In the same way we are one of the biggest sellers on eBay Australia, we would be one of the biggest sellers on Amazon if they were to open local operations.”

“We see Amazon as a real opportunity to supercharge the growth of the Australian online retail sector and deliver more choice to Australian consumers.

deliver 11.5% compound annual growth between now and 2019,” Kogan noted.

HOW KOGAN EXPECTS TO BENEFIT FROM THE JB AND TGG MERGER

Kogan told AR that he sees JB Hi-Fi’s acquisition of The Good Guys as an opportunity because he believes the first thing suppliers are going to do is diversify their channels to market.

“Twelve months ago, brands had four big channels through which to retail their products – JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Dick Smith and The Good Guys. Now they have two and they are concerned.

Consolidation usually means an increase in retailer margins at the outset and a squeeze on supplier margins. Savvy suppliers are already seeking more channels to reach their customers and Kogan.com will only benefit,” he explained.

Bissell celebrates 140th anniversary Fourth generation Bissell CEO, Mark Bissell has celebrated the company’s 140th anniversary as it prepares for further growth in the floorcare business.

“The 140th anniversary was an exciting milestone for us and not one that a lot of companies get to,” he told Appliance Retailer.

“First of all, just surviving through everything for 140 years, but secondly we are also still making the original products that the company was founded on which is the carpet sweeper. My great grandfather, Melville Bissell, invented the carpet sweeper and got the patent in September 1876, so we have always used that as the start date for the business. So to be in business for 140 years and still make the same product that the company was based on, and still be family owned – we feel this is noteworthy.

“Melville Bissell died in his mid-40s, and his wife Anna Bissell fortunately was involved in the business with him. In 1889, she took over the company and became one of the country’s fi rst women CEOs of that era. She ran the company well, invested in products and was a proactive manager and a believer in people so a lot of our culture today comes from her.

GLEN DIMPLEX ACQUIRES TECHNIKA The Australian home appliance company Technika has been acquired by the Glen Dimplex Group. The acquisition combines Technika cooktops, built-in ovens, cookers, microwaves, rangehoods and laundry products as well as Bellissimo

by Technika appliances with the existing Glen Dimplex brands of Belling and New World. The Technika range is stocked by The Good Guys.

It is the second Australian acquisition for Glen Dimplex following the purchase of the family-owned fi replace heating company Real Flame earlier this year.

Technika, founded in 1998 by Craig Hucker and Mark Galea, was a privately owned Australian business. Commenting on the acquisition, Hucker and Galea said: “We are both delighted and humbled that our company Technika, had attracted interest from Glen Dimplex, an immensely successful and significant global entity, and was subsequently purchased”.

Both will continue in their current roles as joint general managers. Their continued involvement was an integral part of the acquisition, Glen Dimplex Australia managing director, David Woodward said.

“Technika have a different business model to our existing business and there is invaluable knowledge and experience within the existing team that we wanted to retain and preserve. I would like to assure the Technika team and all Technika customers that it will be business as usual.”

Speaking to AR, Woodward confi rmed that the acquisition would have no impact on Glen Dimplex products or customers.

“Technika have fantastic long term relationships with architects, interior designers, builders and retailers Australia-

which was the style at the time, but now you just look at it and laugh.

“We have used the anniversary as a rallying cry for our organisation – to say this is who we are, here is why we have been in business all these years and let’s make sure we use the legacy as a foundation upon which to grow.”

Throughout the decades, Bissell has focused on making cleaning easier. In 1956, the company introduced the manual carpet shampooer. During the 1960s, Bissell manufactured stick vacuums – the Bissell MultiVac and 3-Way Vac were two of many industry best sellers. In 1979, Bissell pioneered the home-owned carpet cleaner category with the introduction of the Carpet Machine and formally introduced its line of branded vacuums in 1996.

In recent years, Bissell has focused on creating products specifically for families with pets. To further that commitment, in 2011, Bissell established the Bissell Pet Foundation, a non-profit organisation committed to supporting groups throughout the United States and Canada who are dedicated to helping reduce the number of animals in shelters and rescues through pet adoption, spay/neuter programs, microchipping and foster care. Smeg teams up with VIVE Cooking School Smeg has been chosen as the exclusive supplier of appliances for the recently opened VIVE Cooking School in the inner Sydney suburb of Rosebery. VIVE has been developed to help food artisans, chefs and experts who shape the food industry to connect and engage with consumers who buy their products.

The kitchen features major Smeg appliances including the FAB 32 twodoor refrigerator-freezer both right-hand and left-hand hinge, Black Linear 60cm oven (SFPA130N), SmartSense Plus 90cm induction cooktop, and 90cm Island rangehood, in addition to sinks, taps and dishwashers. The cooking school offers a wide range of cuisines from around the world and technique classes on knife skills and the fundamentals of sauce-making.

Hitachi re-enters Australian home appliance market Hitachi Australia is keen to secure its position in the Australian home appliance market and grow its business across the retail sector. In August, Hitachi strengthened its Australian team, appointing Frank Malcaus to head up the consumer electronics sales division. He was formerly head of sales for home appliances at Samsung Australia.

“Hitachi has re-entered the market as we feel that our core competencies of high-energy efficiency, engineering excellence, industry leading warranty (five years parts and labour, and 10 years warranty on the inverter compressor) and innovative design aesthetics will be appealing and well received by Australian consumers,” he said.

Hitachi has introduced a range of glass door refrigerators in French Door and top mount designs. The range will continue to expand over the next six months.

Behind the scenes at The Good Guys Penrith New store design enhances the customer shopping experience

T

he Good Guys Penrith store executive manager, John Walford has opened the doors to his newly-designed store on Mulgoa Road in Sydney’s west. The team that designed and built the Penrith store was headed up by The Good Guys group general manager of retail, Peter Sinodinos.

In response to customer feedback, the store has been designed with new and improved features and systems that better adapt and fit in with changing customer needs and market conditions.

The Good Guys has introduced a ‘modular gondola’ system, which enables the team to put up or take down displays quickly to keep the store looking fresh and new with every customer visit. This flexibility also means that new brands and categories, such as wearables and home automation, can easily be fitted in around existing displays allowing The Good Guys to be more adaptive to trends when they hit the market.

“The new design really works for us. We now work to what we call an Earned Space Model, which helps us plan the store space requirements based on performance,” Walford explained.

The Good Guys’ customer shopping experience keeps the future wants and needs of customers front of mind with the Penrith store offering a softer and more family focused environment. This includes a refreshed colour pallette and lower

reception desk, enabling team members to connect with each customer throughout their shopping journey.

“We know that our customer is predominantly the modern family, so everything we did in the store had to reflect best practice for this demographic,” Walford said.

The Good Guys’ Kitchen Design Centre is a focal point within the store bringing to life the retailer’s ‘Everything for the Cook’ concept which combines kitchen design and cabinetry with appliances and kitchenware in one convenient location.

“We are excited to be able to offer our customers an end-to-end solution for their kitchen, whether they are renovating or just upgrading. We have experienced in-store kitchen consultants who are well equipped to provide great advice and ideas,” he continued.

When designing the Penrith store, The Good Guys also took the opportunity to rethink the in-store signage to more efficiently and effectively deliver key messages to customers.

This included better signposting to reflect the customer shopping journey, with destination categories adjoining the perimeter of the internal walls. A new impulse product area and product innovation stand are now prominently displayed at the front of the store.

The new service counter has created a convenient and accessible central hub for all service-related activities from picking up an online order or applying for finance, to discussing concierge services.

“It was crucial that we integrated the in-store and online shopping experience and provide a streamlined process for our customers no matter when, where and how they want to shop,” Sinodinos said.

The Good Guys recently partnered with UK leading kitchenware specialist, Lakeland, to launch the Lakeland brand in Australia. The Lakeland display was retrofitted into the Penrith store in late October.

“When we were designing the store we needed to factor this in, not only in terms of making space for Lakeland products, but in rethinking the way our customers would interact with us and our products in a way that we had never done before,” Walford added.

For the sixth year running, The Good Guys was named Most Satisfied Customers Electronics Retailer by consumer research company Canstar Blue and was the only electronic retailer to receive five stars for store layout.

“Our customers have always trusted in The Good Guys – in the experience they have when they visit our store and in the service they receive – so when Peter and his team were designing the Penrith store, they looked for new and innovative ways to enhance the in-store shopping experience. The team has done such an amazing job – they put in so much effort and so many long hours – and I am so proud of what we have achieved, and I hope that our customers love it as much as we do,” Walford concluded. he acquisition of Vintec by Electrolux Home Products earlier this year represents an important milestone in the history of the climate controlled wine storage cabinet category.

Almost 18 years after Jean-Marie Simart commenced Transtherm Australia, which became Vintec Australia in 2007, the specialist business that only sells wine cabinets has been purchased

by Electrolux with a view to developing it into a global brand.

The business consists of two brands – the French-made Transtherm wine cabinets and the Danish-designed Vintec cabinets, which target wine collectors and passionate enthusiasts who seek to age between 30 to 4,000 bottles of wine in a controlled and consistent environment replicating ideal cellaring conditions.

Electrolux already supplies wine cabinets under the Electrolux brand in Europe and North America, and under the AEG brand in the UK. “Our strategy for some time has been to manufacture and supply beautifullydesigned, innovative cooking products with features which enable consumers to cook like a professional and deliver great tasting food and a remarkable consumer experience,” Putt said.

“Electrolux is extremely mindful of the fact that the strength and reputation of the Vintec and Transtherm brands has been based on an exclusive focus on wine cabinets and the optimum storage and service of wine,” Electrolux ANZ managing director, Mike Putt said.

“As such, Electrolux will continue to employ the appropriate people who will be dedicated to the Vintec and Transtherm product range across customer service, sales and marketing.

products, particularly the high-end brands such as AEG and Electrolux,” he said.

The integration of the two businesses is key to the future of Vintec under the new ownership.

To run the new division, Electrolux has appointed Chris Horne, previously general manager at LG. Also within the team are four previous Vintec employees including marketing manager, Thomas

Benhamou who have all been brought over to Electrolux to ensure the successful business culture is maintained.

According to Benhamou, the secret to a successful integration is maintaining a passion for the business and empathy for the consumers of this specialised product under the new organisation.

“From the beginning, Electrolux has been concerned with maintaining the DNA and personality behind the brand.

Electrolux is very conscious that they do not want to disturb what has contributed to Vintec’s success. Jean-Marie has done a very good job of passing on to me and my team his passion for wine and perpetuating the culture into the future.”

One of Benhamou’s key projects is the Vintec Club which now boasts over 11,000 members and emotionally links customers back to the brand after purchase.

“The Vintec Club is not a loyalty program – it is a private club that helps maintain our DNA among Vintec owners through education and experiences.

It is not about pushing promotions or discounts, it is focused on helping our customers enhance wine cellaring and collecting, along with events including private tastings. I believe a platform like this allows us to transmit the Vintec DNA, and despite initial concerns, Electrolux has been very supportive and has embraced this concept wholeheartedly.”

IFA 2016: Part Two

Major innovations from this year’s IFA in Berlin were revealed in the AR October edition, but there were more announcements. Emily Bencic reports.

JURA PREPARES FOR MOTHER’S DAY Jura launched the successor to its Z6 coffee machine, the flagship Z8. The machine will be rolled out in Australia in time for Mother’s Day 2017, with pricing still to be confirmed.

Jura Australia head of sales, George Liakatos told Appliance Retailer, “We are very excited to introduce the Z8, an excellent addition to our premium range of automatic coffee machines. With the unprecedented success of the Z6 in 2016, the Z8 takes coffee preparation to the next level”.

PANASONIC LAUNCHES FOOD PROCESSOR

Panasonic is expanding its food preparation range in time for Christmas with the introduction of a new food processor in diecast aluminium, the MK-F800.

Panasonic Australia group manager of home appliances and air-conditioning, Emile Redden said, “This latest model is in line with the Panasonic philosophy of smart appliances for fresh, healthy living, from our inverter microwaves to our ‘Fresher than Fresh’ refrigerators”.

With the MK-F800 glass touch control, matching the design of the latest microwaves and bread maker, the user can select from five auto-menus, to chop vegetables, mince meats, drain salad, turn nuts and pulses to paste, and handle frozen ingredients, at the touch of a button.

It includes 13 versatile accessories with 33 functions from a French fry blade for creating chips to a salad spinner for making dry salad mixes, a dry mill for spices and a citrus press for juices.

The MK-F800 will retail for $549 and Panasonic will also offer an entry-level food processor in white, the MK-F300 priced at $399.

The oven boasts Turbo Steam. It injects steam directly into the top of the oven from its highly efficient boiler. By cooking with steam food retains more nutrients and natural flavours for a quicker, healthier and more delicious meal.

SAMSUNG GEARS UP FOR LATEST SMARTWATCH

Samsung held its official launch of the Gear S3 smartwatch at IFA. Samsung executive vice president of global marketing for mobile communications, Younghee Lee unveiled the smartwatch before ‘aBlogtoWatch’ founder Ariel Adams took the stage to speak to Switzerland-based luxury watch designer, Yvan Arpa, who was involved in the Gear S3 design process.

Renowned artist and industrial designer, Arik Levy, who was also at the launch, has partnered with Samsung to develop and introduce watch faces and strap designs for the Gear S3.

There will be two designs available to consumers: the Frontier and the Classic.

The former is suitable for any setting with its rugged look, while the latter is more minimalist and elegant, influenced by the

design aspects of traditional, premium wristwatches. Its design was influenced by research and surveys from consumers, industry leaders and watch experts, globally.

The stand-out feature which sets the Gear S3 apart from its predecessor, the Gear S2, is the Alti/barometer and speedometer that tracks altitude, atmospheric pressure, sudden changes in weather, distance travelled and speed.

Commenting on the launch, Samsung Electronics Australia corporate vice president and chief marketing officer, Phil Newton said, “We have announced the global launch of two wristwatches that offer our most advanced wearable technology available today including GPS, heart rate monitor, on-board microphone, as well as a music streaming services. They are durable and built with IP68 water and dust resistance rating”.

“For the first time on the Gear series, the Gear S3 features Corning Gorilla Glass SR+, which is specifically designed for wearable devices to help provide a tougher, more scratch resistant and crisp display than our previous Gear devices,” he said.

The 16-megapixel full-color Always On Display (AOD) and Super AMOLED technology means the face will always show the time rather than automatically fading to black to closely mimic the look and feel of a luxury analogue watch.

“The best noise-cancelling headphones Sony has ever made”, the MDR-1000X, arrived in Australia in October, retailing for $699.95. The headphones have two microphones built-in, one on the outside and one on the inside.

“We have responded to consumer feedback around noise-cancelling headphones, particularly with users having to take off their headphones when someone is talking to them,” Sony head of video and sound, Abel Makhraz told AR. “When users place their hand over the right ear-cup, the volume is automatically reduced, and ambient sound – including voices – can be heard without needing to shout or remove the headphones. When you take your hand away, music and noisecancelling resumes,” he explained.

The new Signature Series range offers some of the company’s most premium audio products, two Walkman models, headphones and headphone amplifier.

“The high resolution audio market is growing, particularly among the younger demographic, who want this quality on the go. The material is also premium with one model made of pure copper and gold plated. Not just for looks, it makes the device rigid and helps vibration of sound,” Makhraz said.

n the October issue of AR, we announced the Leading Appliances award winners from the annual Leading Edge Conference held in September at RACV Royal Pines Resort on the Gold Coast. This issue, we would like to acknowledge the winners from the Leading Electronics business.

The Gala Awards evening was the culmination of nominated suppliers, members and store owners who were recognised for their achievements during the past year. The winners included: • Supplier of the Year presented to Michael Carr from Electus Distribution • Brand of the Year presented to John Humphries from Uniden, which also received the Best Conference Tradeshow Stand award • Account Manager of the Year awarded to Fraser Kendall from Mindlab Electronics • James Kearney from Leading Edge Electronics support office awarded Team Player of the Year • Electronics Plus in Burnie, Tasmania received Store of the Year award.

Select presentations introduced members to a number of new business platforms; from e-commerce and email direct marketing to online staff training.

New growth opportunities were also introduced to members to facilitate interest and interaction within the Appliances and Electronics Group; most notably, Smart Choice Tech Repairs, designed specifically for the mobile device repair industry with a view to create an Australia-wide network of certified independent mobile repair businesses.

In summing up the three day conference, Leading Edge Group general manager for technology, Lee Scott, said: “the conference combines a range of businesses from both the retail and supplier sides to discuss business plans and to showcase distinctive opportunities. Hong Kong Fair embraces huge potential of virtual reality The annual Hong Kong Electronics Fair opened its doors at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre last month. The Fair was host to over 4,200 exhibitors, in conjunction with electronicAsia. This year’s highlights included smart technology, virtual reality (VR) and wearable electronics.

VR headsets were crowd favourites, which comes as no surprise with global research fi rms predicting 171 million active users by 2018, with hardware revenue tipped to reach $4.6 billion and an increase of a whopping 3,000% for VR software.

Speaking at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair was Industrial Technology Research Institute, industry analyst and project manager, Alex Hou. “Smartphones from key vendors could be packaged with VR headsets as soon as 2020. I also believe smartphones will have a 360-degree camera as a standard feature and VR displays will advance to 16K resolution within this time frame,” Hou told a group of attendees.

A number of smartphone manufacturers have already jumped on the VR bandwagon. In particular, Sony with its PlayStation VR (early shipments sold out prior to arriving in stores), the Gear VR from Samsung, the Microsoft HoloLens and the HTC Vive.

Hou also believes intelligent personal assistants, such as Siri, could have a physical face through the use of VR in the near future. “You will be able to see Siri, not just talk or respond to her,” he said.

This year’s Electronics Fair also debuted the Tech Hall with virtual reality and start up zones, smart tech, robotics and unmanned tech, as well as 3D printing.

The startup zone had approximately 50 companies exhibiting from Hong Kong, Canada, Chinese mainland, Taiwan and the US. Meanwhile, the new virtual reality zone showcased a range of VR headsets and video cameras.

Launched last year, the smart tech, robotics and unmanned tech zones offered robots with IoT technology, luggage tracking bands, drones and electric scooters.

The Electronics Fair also provided insights into market trends through a symposium on innovation and technology with the Hong Kong Electronics and Technologies Association. Representatives from the world’s leading companies including Tesla, Amazon Web Services, HP and Qualcomm, shared their expertise on smart technology and IoT trends.

Visitors were eager to experience virtual reality.

Amazon Web Services solutions architect, Olivier Klein discussed how parent company and online retailer, Amazon.com, is maximising the value of its warehouse facilities through its investment in artificial intelligence.

“Robots do the picking in our warehouses and the shelving is not as you would imagine in your traditional warehouse facility. Products in the same category are not necessarily stored together, they are all over the place,” Klein said.

“Why do we do that? It is a perfect example of IoT. All of the robots are connected to a system. They know how to drive on highways and streets and how to navigate within the warehouse, knowing exactly where products are stored,” he explained. “We store them in a manner on how they are bought. We understand the buying patterns of our customers.

The warehouse mechanism stores products with exactly the same logic as those after-sales emails, you receive that say, ‘You just bought this product, so we think you may be interested in these products.’ It’s all about efficiency and planning the route in accordance to the other robots,” he said. he coffee machine category has seen a slight 1% increase in unit terms and a 5% jump in value, from September 2014-August 2015 to September 2015-August 2016, the latest GfK data has shown. Furthermore, Euromonitor data found that coffee machine sales in Australia reached 541,800 units and $160.6 million in 2015.

Coffee machine sales have been primarily driven by growing demand for automatic machines as growth rates moved from negative to positive territory in 2015. Sales of pod coffee machines continued to decline as consumers sought to replicate the café experience at home.

Automatic coffee machines were widely regarded as a premium product but

as consumers become more sophisticated in their coffee tastes, they seek greater control and more consistent results.

Coffee is one of Australia’s favourite beverages – excluding tap water and alcohol – with 36% of consumers drinking coffee, in comparison to 24% tea, 16% juice, 12% soft drinks and 8% dairy drinks, according to a recent Australian Beverage Consumption study.

The Nestle World of Coffee report found that on average 2.2 cups of coffee are drunk per day per person in Australia. This is high on a global average. For some emerging coffee drinking markets, such as China, the number is only 0.1 cups, but on the other end of the scale is Norway drinking five or more cups per person per day.

It is estimated that in-home coffee in Australia still accounts for 62% of all cups drunk, the Nestle report found. Of

the in-home coffee market, the biggest share is still soluble or instant coffee accounting for 79% of all cups and over 55% of that is Nescafe, according to Nielsen scan data for FY15.

Whilst instant still holds the majority of cups share in Australia, capsules is by far the biggest growth segment of the in-home coffee category.

In 2015, capsules grew by 24.9%, in comparison to soluble coffee at 1.7%, the Nielsen data also found. This growth in capsules is driven by the trend toward premium and the desire to replicate a café quality cup of coffee in home.

The capsules segment is expected to continue to grow over the next decade as capsule coffee machines grow in household penetration. Nielsen figures from December 2015 show that household penetration of capsule machines is 30%. AR

“This great result has been driven through a proven model of success for the brand, from a modern and innovative brand campaign, most recently ‘Reinventing classics’ featuring American hip hop recording artist, musician and record producer, Will.I.Am, to instore execution and support through permanent POS, demonstrations, pricing and field team,” sales and marketing manager, Bryan Win said.

“From a capsule machine category perspective, we are starting to see a consolidation of players within the category. Bigger brands looking to drive long term category growth by investing in media, in-store execution, new product development and pricing are winning the game,” he said.

“From a consumer perspective, great coffee is at the heart of the category – it’s non-negotiable. However, with the ever expanding coffee culture in Australia, consumers also want the variety they can get in the café, at home, at value for money,” he added.

Contrary to the statistics, the biggest impact on the hot beverage category is the growth of manual espresso machines, according to Sunbeam beverage category manager Nicole Norton.

“Taking value share from pod machines, manual machines are increasing in popularity, growing at 7% as consumers replicate café taste and quality in the comfort of their own home. In June and July 2016, manuals achieved 37% value share, surpassing pod machines at 35% to be the leading value segment – a trend not seen in many years,” she noted.

“Café culture has become a part of Australian daily life and is the social meeting place of choice. This is leading to a more discerning consumer who better understands coffee taste and is demanding quality coffee.

“Strong demand in the manual machine sector has been reflected in Sunbeam’s growth rate of 28% MAT,” Norton added.

Cool results from value and volume growth

he refrigeration category continued to make solid gains in the past year, buoyed by positive sales for both refrigerators and wine cellars. Refrigerators rose 4% in volume, to reach 1.7 million units, just pipped at the post by a 5% increase in volume sales for wine coolers/chillers. (See Wine Cabinet Feature this issue).

Leading manufacturers are now focusing on features that are kinder to household budgets by reducing wastage via innovations and improvements in energy efficiency. And demand for premium French door appliances continues to surge with the layout of these models giving easy, flexible access along with increased interior space for larger items.

Commenting on the results, Euromonitor Research analyst Hianyang Chan said, “Fridge freezer formats and sizes continue to evolve in Australia, with more diversity being seen in this area following the introduction

of the four-door French fridge freezer.”

Chan added that despite top mount fridge-freezer models remaining the most common format with a 44% volume share, it came with a 3% decline over the course of the year. Electrolux Home Products is the leading brand with volume share of 26%, followed by Fisher & Paykel on 16%.

“The Australian housing market remains strong as increasing technological innovation and design features derived from evolving consumer demand in recent years has influenced design and innovation trends in refrigeration appliances,” Chan said.

GfK data for the year ending August 2016 was consistent with those of Euromonitor, showing a 4% increase in volume and a 6% rise in value for the refrigerator category. The French door and bottom mount market with 18% and 8% value growth respectively, contributing to the overall spike in sales.

Demand for high-end kitchen appliances has increased strongly over

the past five years, as household incomes grow steadily and consumers look for ways to differentiate their kitchens with exclusive, high-priced European products, according to the 2016 IBIS World Industry Report on Domestic Appliance Retailing in Australia.

This product segment has increased as a share of revenue over the past five years due to increased demand, higher prices for certain goods, and advances in product design and technology, the report said. While external competition from pure-play online retailers is expected to intensify, the limited scope to visualise the dimensions of larger appliances in the home is limiting the movement of the industry’s market base to the online shopping space. brands. “Our research has identified an overall trend showing that consumers want, and are buying, bigger fridges with more ergonomically-designed platforms to provide better and bigger access and features that keep their food fresher, longer.” Ball said there has been a steady and strong growth in the bottom mount category and interestingly side-by-side owners are moving across to French door models. “French door and bottom mounts are considered by consumers as the modern style in refrigeration.” He added that the market is being driven by the focus on fresh food, accessibility and having the main compartment at eye level. Overall, he said fridge sales follow population growth: “So it is not so much a state thing but more a big city drift which herald any sales increases.” He also suggested that refrigerators offer a timeless beauty. “It is going to last a long time and should not go out of fashion within a couple of years.”

There is a polarisation at the top and bottom ends of the market, with the French door segment sitting at the top and growing, Mitsubishi Electric national retail sales manager, Garth Hickey said. “The demand for larger French door models may also be attributed to changing household shopping growing habits and home cooking trends.” There is also demand for designer appeal, he said, for example colour coordinated kitchens. However, Hickey said the industry is facing some challenges with the number of kitchen design options available, “but retailers

cannot support them all due to limited floor space.” He said this presents retailers with the opportunity to provide an ‘innovation area’ to showcase new designs and test the market. According to Hickey, customers are looking for products with improved energy efficiency and the challenge for brands is to have constant R&D to improve efficiency.

Making a re-entry into the local market is Hitachi, as it introduces French door, side-by-side and top mount models with a choice of glass door fi nishes.

Sharing his thoughts on the market was national sales manager, Frank Malcaus who said: “The strongest trends for refrigeration in 2016 revolves around style, functionality, energy efficiency and build quality. Our market intelligence indicates the Australian consumer is more in-tune with health and wellbeing, reducing the amount of fresh food wastage and are mindful of having a lower impact on natural resources by using more energy efficient products.”

the LG 2016 Annual Household Survey revealed that 38% of people believe they spend more than nine years with their refrigerator before the need to upgrade.

Bosch said its increased sales are coming from growing demand for French door models which have seen a 19% year-over-year volume growth, and although working from a small base, the French four-door segment has achieved 40% year-on-year volume growth. “That being said, two door fridges still continue to hold a significant portion of our total market with this figure sitting at 62% in 2015,” product manager, Nilouki Roland said. “The year-on-year volume growth for bottom mount fridge-freezers has increased to 18%.” Roland credits the trend to top and bottom mount fridges primarily to competitive product offerings in the top mount sector, followed closely by market growth for bottom-mount fridge-freezers.

The majority of Australians want a fridge with customisable spaces, according to Samsung Home Appliances director, Jeremy Senior. Samsung recently partnered with Woolworths to give households the option to order groceries directly from the new Samsung Family Hub refrigerator via a customised Woolworths app. It can also connect to a compatible smartphone via the Samsung Smart Home app for viewing fridge contents from outside the home.

“It breaks new ground for household technology that is designed to transform the way Australians manage their food and life around the kitchen,” Senior said.

Andi-Co is picking up on a trend to integrated refrigeration with its Liebherr brand. “Placing fully integrated appliances behind kitchen cabinetry is becoming more popular,” marketing executive, Dijana Stangolev told AR. “Consumers can personalise the fi nish of the cabinetry to suit the kitchen décor, as well as choose the fridge combination the family actually needs.” Another trend is a move away from less efficient refrigeration into food preservation. “Selling a box is no longer an option.” And the renovation market is still in full-force, particularly in the eastern states, although the slowdown in the mining industry in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia has impacted on consumer confidence, she said.

Echoing many of these industry comments was Panasonic, nominating “stylish design, the capacity to store food

and being energy wise,” as three key trends. This focus on style is exemplified with the popularity of French door fridges as the Panasonic full flat glass door model hit stores. “In addition, health-conscious and waste-averse Australians want fridges that keep food fresh and offer energy savings,” product marketing manager for whitegoods, Chasnyn Ousmand said.

Strong growth in the top end of the market for built-in appliances is also being reported from Miele, with high-

value technologies such as PerfectFresh and DynaCool rating. “With the increasing focus on healthy living, consumers are drawn to refrigerators which will maintain freshness for longer,” product manager, built-in and refrigeration, Kylie Taylor noted. When it comes to state by state sales indications, ranking is broadly in line with current population shares.

These can be placed together to deliver up to 30 combinations when single door fridges and freezers are combined with top-mount and bottom-mount configurations. “Our research shows that consumers like to have a place for everything,” Graham Ball said. Other key features on the new Electrolux fridges include telescopic runners for storage bins, aluminium trims on shelves and LED lighting. With increasing electricity prices energy ratings have also become a very tangible feature. “We have made this range best in class in terms of energy efficiency and the integrated design means there is uniform design across the oven, dishwashers and fridges.”

Mitsubishi Electric claims to offer the ultimate functionality in food preservation without losing moisture or taste with the Versa drawer that offers supercool and soft freezing options.

This feature comes on the new multi drawer MR-WX627Z and the existing MR-WX743Y models with the glass door fi nish. According to LG, the top end of the market continues to generate some great innovations. Fitting into this is LG’s latest entrant: the world-fi rst Dual Door-in-Door French door, the GF6D725BGL (RRP: $5,399). It gives easy access to regularly used items with the specially designed cooking space for culinary ingredients and the family space for snacks and drinks. It also features LG Bluetooth soundbar audio speakers for streaming music wirelessly. The curved glass door is fi nished in black mirror glass, embedded in a honeycomb pattern with silver particles to add a subtle sheen.

There are 32 storage spaces, 20 in the fridge and 12 in the freezer section.

Smeg unveiled its latest FAB 28 model, the limited edition Dolce & Gabbana fashion collaboration at the Milan design fair Eurocucina 2016 in April. Hand-painted by a traditional Sicilian artist, it reflects the colours and patterns of Sicilian folklore. Only 100 refrigerators will be available and no two are the same. Features on the 256 litre fridge include automatic cyclic defrost and quick chill crystal shelves. And in case you were wondering, one has already been sold to a consumer in New South Wales.

Bosch will introduce new sideby-side fridges to its existing range, featuring an ice and water dispenser unit along with an innovative new feature called VitaFresh Plus. This allows longer freshness of food via a manual humidity control. “The benefits to consumers will make this an exciting new offering and will allow retailers to explore new selling angles,” Nilouki Roland said.

The Samsung Family Hub is a multi-tasker with a 21.5-inch LCD touchscreen that serves as the fridge’s digital command centre, complete with a grocery-ordering app. More than half a million people shop with Woolworths online each month, with 200,000 taking advantage of the customised Woolworths app. The hub features more than 2,200 recipes with updates and new recipes added on a regular basis. Other features include photo sharing, surfi ng the net or streaming music.

Also taking the fashionable French door runway for the fi rst time is Panasonic with a new 547 litre model, NR-CY54AGSAU (RRP: $2,499). A key feature is the full-flat, frame-free glass panel to give a seamless fi nish with recessed curved handles to match the flat design. This brings the total Panasonic fridge line-up to seven models that include four bottom mounts in 450 and 470 litre capacities in stainless colour or white.

The message to consumers from Fisher & Paykel is the company’s Active Smart technology. It senses every time the fridge door is opened and helps maintain an even temperature, to deliver better food care. “One of the challenges with freestanding fridges is the space required around the appliances to allow for door clearances and ventilation. Our ActiveSmart 900mm French Door Slide-in minimises gaps through heavy duty hinges and adjustable doors, enabling gaps of only 4mm to create consistent lines throughout a kitchen,” Kara May said.

ust what is driving refrigeration sales? The answer according to Con Verteouris is “renovations”. However, this response comes with another observation as fridges take on a fashion status with customers upgrading their existing fridge for a model that reflects the latest design trends.

When it comes to the status symbol of them all – wine cellars – there is a noticeable trend for these moving out of the niche market as more mainstream brands enter the category at lower price points. Beverage fridges are also gaining momentum as customers opt to have a ‘drinks fridge’ for a variety of beverages, as opposed to one just for wine.

Strong sales are coming across for new Electrolux and Westinghouse models due to increased energy efficiencies and larger capacities within the same footprint. “The latest Fisher & Paykel fridges with integrated ice makers are also performing well and the launch of the new flat door models without handles have been well received by customers,” he said.

As for the discerning customer, SubZero is a popular choice: “designed for a multitude of kitchen designs”.

Interest is also accelerating for integrated refrigeration as customers opt for a seamless fi nish with their cabinetry.

most efficient use of space as there is almost no gap between the wall and the appliance, meaning the internal cavity is maximised.” When it comes to finishes, if integration is not practical, stainless steel is the colour of choice, as in most cases it matches other appliances in the kitchen.

“As Australians love to entertain, Winning Appliances’ clients are increasingly creating alfresco entertaining areas with integrated fridges, beverage centres and wine chillers as part of their renovation.”

Asked about the importance of promotions, Verteouris noted that whether a product was on promotion or not did not influence the decision to make a standalone fridge purchase.

“However, if the customer is renovating, promotion may come into play in conjunction with ordering the rest of the kitchen appliances.”

Because Winning Appliances caters to the renovation market, customers typically use online as a research channel, but prefer to come to the store to speak to a sales expert, as well as to see and touch the products.

Verteouris did express concern that the width of range is becoming harder to display in a retail setting as suppliers expand their offerings. As a result he said online will become increasingly important for retailers selling extended product ranges. It was also important to show genuine innovation that is beneficial to customers. AR

Hitachi has developed customised messaging with it ‘5+FIVE’ point of sale selling strategy, which highlights five key features of its fridge products and promotes the 5-year parts and labour warranty.

Mitsubishi Electric is using real life situations for its Work for Me TV campaign where users talk about the benefits of their Mitsubishi Electric fridges. The TVC is also supported by a digital campaign.

Miele is offering 5% off the total purchase price in an appliance package that includes at least three Miele kitchen appliances with a minimum order value of $7,500.

Love and appreciation of wine is on the rise

lectric wine coolers and chillers remain in their infancy in Australia, although sales have seen a recent upward trend, buoyed by the growing love of wine among Australian consumers and an appreciation of correct storage.

This was a major driver of sales for electric wine coolers and chillers in 2015, with the category increasing by 5% in volume to 78,100 units and by 8% in value to $99.2 million, according to Euromonitor data.

The category is set to post the strongest growth of any refrigeration appliance over the forecast period with a volume compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6%. The popularity of these appliances is set for growth as the

enjoyment of wine continues to develop among the Australian population and appreciation of the importance of storing wine appropriately, also rises with it.

To capitalise on the forecasted growth of the category, Electrolux acquired the Vintec wine cabinets business in August, and has since been integrating it into its operations.

Electrolux Home Products Australia and New Zealand managing director, Mike Putt, told AR that the integration process is more concerned with administrative, accounting and logistical efficiencies and economies of scale, rather than Vintec’s customer and market interface.

“Electrolux is extremely mindful of the fact that the strength and reputation of the Vintec and Transtherm brands

has been based on an exclusive focus on wine cabinets and the optimum storage and service of wine,” Putt said.

“As such, Electrolux will continue to employ the appropriate people who will be dedicated to the Vintec and Transtherm product range across customer service, sales and marketing.

This is similar to the approach we took with the BeefEater barbecues business which has now been successfully integrated into the Electrolux operations where it continues to enjoy the profitable growth we anticipated when we purchased it three years ago,” he added.

Built-in models and grill segment pushing the market along

he good news is while microwaves are considered to be essential and ubiquitous, the bad news is suppliers have so far been largely unable to convince consumers to trade up to more advanced models. Sales rose 2% in 2015 to reach 1.2 million units as average selling prices increased 2%.

Built-in microwaves are now the best performers in the category, according to the latest Euromonitor data, with a volume growth of 4%, leaving freestanding models set to increase in volume at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2%.

“It is expected that leading manufacturers will seek to distinguish their brands and products through technological innovations such as multifunctional built-in models that combine steaming and baking with sleek design,” Euromonitor research analyst Hianyang Chan said. “This fits with the growing trend of having the kitchen as the centrepiece in the home.” Chan pointed out sales for built-in microwaves will continue to grow, driving volume in an otherwise mature market. “With growing

urbanisation and the shift towards apartment living and generally smaller living spaces, sales for compact built-in models are gaining momentum at the expense of freestanding microwaves.”

GfK is picking up on a hike in sales for the grill segment, with a 16% value increase in the latest data (September 15 – August 16) with the total microwave segment growing 1% in value terms.

LG marketing manager, Brad Reed, held a similar view. “Generally, consumers are price driven around the category, and microwaves can be seen as a ‘cash and carry’ type product with little differentiation among brands.” AR www.applianceretailer.com.au

he microwave category is becoming more active in developing new products, increasingly adopting smart technologies that deliver faster cooking times and better cooking results. Consumers can choose models that offer a multiple of cooking methods, including convection, grill, steam, microwaves and defrost features.

Units have become more compact to cater for the space and style conscious apartment dwellers.

“Because of the shorter cooking time, cooking in a microwave helps to maintain the nutritional levels of food and is one of the best ways to preserve nutrients in vegetables. The microwave is an appliance asset in any kitchen especially when it comes to delivering healthy meals,” he continued.

While stand-alone microwaves continue to perform strongly, it is the multi-function microwave that is the star performer at Smeg. “This new powerhouse of multi-function cooking is proving extremely popular,” head of brand, Tamara Buchanan said. “Not just for its cooking prowess but also for its choice of aesthetics, in Classic, Linear and Victoria Built-in.”

For Panasonic, global leader in the category, the focus is on providing smart appliances for fresh, healthy living. In November, the company is launching a Combination Microwave that injects steam directly into an upper compartment to retain the natural flavour of ingredients. “Panasonic continues to respond to demand for convenient products that provide healthy and delicious results,” product marketing manager, Nicolas Cauzac said.

Microwaves have become essential household appliances, used on average twice to five times daily, according to GAF Control product and marketing co-ordinator, Jessica Dinh. “The microwave is usually one of the first items to be purchased in a new home due to its versatility. Most new kitchens have space designed for these appliances that form part of the whole kitchen functionality.”

Dinh said while common uses of the appliance are cooking, re-heating and defrosting, the microwave technology performance has advanced over the past 10 years. “Now grilling, steaming and other multi-cooking features are able to create meals that are fast and convenient.”

Built-in models sitting at the top end of the market are producing strong sales for Miele. “Increasingly, these consumers seek stylish, time and labour saving appliances that incorporate highvalue technologies,” product manager for built-in, Kylie Taylor noted. “Customers appreciate the quality and speed of food preparation that these ideal kitchen companions offer.”

For Breville, the microwave focus is on its award-winning Quick Touch range. This year, Quick Touch collected a ‘recommended’ tick from consumer organisation Choice, for the ‘what to buy’ review. It was followed by a ‘Product of the Year’ shopper survey award given for product performance, value for money and overall satisfaction.

P

romotions can help retailers drive traffic in store, increase average weight of purchase (AWOP), increase spend, improve frequency, and drive basket penetration in a category.

However, promotions can be a double edged sword particularly if you’re offering promotions to new customers that loyal customers can’t access. Or if done too frequently, they become a form of drug the business thinks it can’t live without.

You can’t meet all objectives at once with one promotion so you need to plan your promotional calendar based around achieving specific objectives in specific categories at different times throughout the year.

MATCHING PROMOTIONS TO RETAIL OBJECTIVES There’s more to promotions than simple price discounts. Price promotions may or may not drive traffic to your store or achieve an incremental or unplanned sale. They often trade shoppers down on a category they planned to buy anyway by switching them to the product that’s on special. On the other hand if what

you’re wanting is basket penetration of the product on special, then a price promotion could be seen to be achieving that objective.

WHO WILL YOUR PROMOTION ATTRACT?

You need to think about which type of customer you are targeting with your promotion. For example, if you’re running a promotion for regular or frequent customers in a category, then the mechanics need to be based around increasing their AWOP or spend, because they are already frequent visitors with high basket penetration.

Conversely, if you want to drive sales from your lighter or less frequent category shoppers, then you would employ mechanics designed to drive traffic, frequency and basket penetration.

The mediums you choose for your promotion need to reflect the mechanic and target market. It’s no good running an on-pack promotion with no other support if your objective is to drive traffic to the category.

Frequency based promotions can be done cost effectively via direct contact (mail, email, text, IM) to your regular customer base. Obviously having a database of your regular customers is a must, including their purchase history.

Shoppers prefer to be contacted with relevant offers based on their purchase preferences, not spammed with offers on categories irrelevant to them.

Traffic and penetration based promotions, particularly if targeting new or infrequent customers, typically require out-of-store communications ranging from outdoor to traditional media as well as digital and social media.

AWOP and spend based promotions can be successfully executed at shelf and within store, and may or may not require out-of-store communication aside from direct contact with your regular customer base, depending on how spectacular the offer is.

There are number of ways to approach promotions and mechanics. The key is to plan who you are targeting, with what objective in mind, so you can select the most effective mechanic rather than simply fi lling your promotion calendar. AR
