JB, you’ve done it again

S

ince the turn of the new decade, there has been a consistent buzzword (or two) making headlines – voluntary administration. The reason behind the collapse of household names like Harris Scarfe and Jeanswest is current local market conditions. According to the administrators, that is. But with the right strategy and evolving business model to adapt to changing customer demands, a fall from grace won’t simply happen overnight. These retailers seemed to be relying on the way business had been done for decades and it eventually got the better of them. There’s no denying that the retail industry is facing macro challenges with subdued consumer confidence further dampened by the nation’s bushfire crisis and now the coronavirus. But one retailer that continues to defy odds is JB Hi-Fi. Of course there may be others performing well within our industry – but unlike JB, they aren’t obligated to disclose their sales numbers. When JB purchased The Good Guys back in 2016, there was overwhelming relief that the retailer remained in local hands but at the same time, uncertainty around balancing the synergies of the two businesses. But now in 2020, the group is more solid than ever, having reported record sales and earnings growth for first half financial year 2020 and lifting profit guidance for the full financial year. In his investor presentation, JB group CEO, Richard Murray pointed out three simple foundations of the success – biggest brands at the lowest prices, relevant customer offers and passionate team members.

Average Net Distribution Per Issue: 5,139 AMAA/CAB Yearly Audit Period ending 31st March 2019.

Murray did also acknowledge that much of the growth for the first half was from low margin categories such as mobile phones and wireless headphones and there is an increasing bias toward customer purchases during key promotional periods such as Black Friday and Boxing Day. Looking ahead, JB is committed to driving sales across all channels – instore, online and commercial, expanding its communications and connected tech offering, optimising its store network to maximise profitability, and simplifying processes to improve stock flow into store and back of house operations. Over at The Good Guys, the focus areas are on establishing a leading position in the connected home appliance market, improving its cooking offer, led by the rollout of Miele cooking in selected stores and the introduction of Smeg small appliances, providing enhanced delivery and further connecting the online and in-store experience. January sales momentum was strong, and the group is looking forward to a positive second half. So is the economy to blame for the numerous retail failures in recent months? Maybe partly, but poor business practices are playing a large role too.

Panasonic withdraws from Australian TV market In an exclusive interview, Panasonic Australia managing director, Paul Reid discussed the company’s rich history in televisions locally, spanning more than 50 years.

A

lthough Panasonic has enjoyed much success in the TV market, Panasonic Australia managing director, Paul Reid told Appliance Retailer he is optimistic about the future. While acknowledging the current economic headwinds facing Australian retail, Reid said the decision to withdraw from the Australian TV market was based on an analysis of market dynamics and characteristics which found that the company’s resources were better used to focus on other business areas. “Panasonic has never been just a TV brand but a broadly diversified business. TVs were just a small part of our portfolio,” he said. “We have our highly successful retail and commercial air conditioning range, benchtop appliances including microwaves, bread makers and rice cookers, Lumix imaging products, our ever-growing personal care products which recently expanded from male shavers and trimmers to female facial cleansers and hair dryers, and the re-introduction of Technics audio to the Australian market.” Reid confirmed that Panasonic’s retail partners and end consumers can expect further expansion in benchtop appliances, new additions to the Technics range and potential new categories for Panasonic Australia in 2020.

“Retail has been challenging but some of our partners have been performing really well, particularly during the Christmas period. I believe there is reason for optimism with positive signs in the housing market and I expect improved conditions towards the latter half of 2020.” Reid also shared his message to Panasonic’s valued retail partners: “Our relationship with you is comprehensive – well beyond TVs – so we will remain a strong and loyal partner and we look forward to continuing our relationship in the years to come with our huge product portfolio. We are here to stay.” The current range of television models will continue to be sold via Australian retailers while stocks last, and existing owners of Panasonic television products will be provided with customer service. Other products in the Panasonic audio visual range or other categories are not affected by the decision.

Panasonic Australia opened a television factory in 1968 in Penrith in Sydney’s west (which was in operation until 2006) and the first Panasonic black and white television was released in 1969 under the National brand. Five years on, Panasonic introduced its first colour television. Fast forward to 2004, Panasonic launched its first flat screen plasma then came the hype of 3D TV in 2010 and the company’s first OLED flagship EZ1000 was introduced in 2017. Over the years, Panasonic partnered with celebrities, including Peter Allen, Olivia Newtown-John and Matt Shirvington, for key TV campaigns. Panasonic was also the official partner of the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the audio visual equipment category.

Harris Scarfe receivers say selling the business would be the best outcome for employees and suppliers

Harris Scarfe enters receivership with some stores forced to close Harris Scarfe was placed into receivership in December 2019 with Vaughan Strawbridge, Kathryn Evans and Tim Norman of Deloitte Restructuring Services appointed voluntary administrators. Operating nationally, but best known in Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, Harris Scarfe retails bed linen, kitchenware, homewares, electrical appliances, and apparel. The business employs over 1,800 staff and has annual sales totaling $380 million. At the time of the announcement, Strawbridge said trading continued over

the Christmas period and employees were paid by the receivers. Gift cards and layby deposits are being honoured in full. In January, Harris Scarfe confirmed the closure of 21 stores located in WA, QLD, NSW, VIC, SA and the ACT with approximately 88 full time, 128 part-time and 224 casual positions affected. There are 44 stores which remain in the portfolio to be offered for sale with approximately 1,360 jobs remaining. This is five more stores than originally anticipated. Strawbridge said the business had been well supported by loyal employees and customers so it was a difficult but

necessary decision to position the Harris Scarfe business for a successful sale. “All efforts are being made to redeploy affected staff around the rest of the store network, and all staff that leave the business will receive all wages and entitlements in full on the closure of individual stores. “Our review of the store network included a range of factors, including past and likely future profitability. Going forward, we certainly remain focused on running the broader store network and selling the business as the best outcome for remaining employees and suppliers.”

Until June, Moujaes will assist with the transition to the new management team headed up by Harris. Amazon Hub gives customers another delivery option Amazon Hub – a network of parcel pickup points designed to offer Australian customers more choice and convenience – is now available at hundreds of locations with thousands to be rolled out across the country in 2020. The network includes two pickup point options – Locker and Counter. Counter, which originally launched in Europe in 2019 is a pickup network staffed by store partners for quick and easy collection of parcels in more than 100 VANA stores in Victoria, with more locations coming soon. At the Locker, customers will scan the barcode or use the code to retrieve their parcel.

For Counter locations, customers will provide the barcode or code to store staff. Delivery to an Amazon Hub location is available for more than 125 million items sold on amazon.com.au and works with free expedited delivery and standard delivery at no extra cost. Amazon Hub director, Patrick Supanc said since launching Amazon Australia in 2017, the company has committed to making e-commerce rooted in low prices, vast selection and convenience. “We are excited to partner with large and small businesses in Australia to extend Amazon’s customer service and innovations in delivery.”

Jura launches its most premium coffee machine yet Jura hosted select retail partners and media for the exclusive launch of what the company describes as its ‘most sophisticated’ fully automatic coffee machine – the GIGA 6 – available in Australia from March 2020. Also in attendance was Jura global CEO, Emanuel Probst, global service manager, Peter van Rohr and export manager, Eveline Fink from the Jura head office in Switzerland. The result of close to A$3 million in research and development and new production tools with more than 70 engineers behind the inner workings of the machine, the GIGA 6 is designed for coffee lovers who want ‘the best of the best’ coffee machine in their home at RRP $6,490. Jura Australia managing director, George Liakatos said, “As a fully automatic coffee machine specialist, we need to be at the forefront of innovation and new technology and the GIGA 6 represents the very best in coffee as the company’s most luxury and premium machine.” Unique to the GIGA 6 is the ability to prepare a Spanish cortado – the Australian equivalent of a piccolo – a short, milk coffee with Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) espresso, but at the heart of the GIGA 6 is Artificial Intelligence (AI) which means the coffee machine learns personal preferences and adapts the start screen on the 4.3inch high resolution display accordingly.

1

3 The GIGA 6 is also accompanied by the Jura Operating Experience (J.O.E.) app, available on Android and iOS devices, including Apple Watch. First introduced in 2018, the app is designed to put the machine interface in the palm of the user’s hand. A recent update to the app is the ability to assign Siri shortcuts to coffee specialties – for example, ‘Hey Siri, prepare espresso’ which was demonstrated at the launch event. Jura has also introduced Automatic Grinder Adjustment, allowing the two ceramic disc grinders to automatically adjust while preparing coffee to consistently enhance the flavour and taste for the lifetime of the machine. In addition to two grinders, the GIGA 6 has two bean hoppers, ideal for coffee drinkers who wish to blend coffee or for those who drink decaf as they can set one of the hoppers to a decaf setting. With two grinders, two pumps and two fluid systems, the GIGA 6 can make two coffees simultaneously. Further, the GIGA 6 allows users to adjust the milk temperature, auto switch from milk to milk foam and program the exact amount of both milk and milk foam to suit the cup size. AR

Winning Appliances Chadstone a big success in a small format BY EMILY BENCIC

As Australia’s largest shopping centre, Chadstone presented a great opportunity to introduce Winning Appliances’ unique multi-sensory experience to Victorians, according to Winning Group CEO, John Winning. In an interview with Appliance Retailer, he speaks about the first showroom in this format and why it was a natural fit to be located among other premium brands.

T

he Winning Appliances Chadstone showroom opened just days before Christmas last year with over 1,000 people visiting the showroom on opening day, according to John Winning. “Chadstone has performed solidly since opening and on average, throughout the Christmas and New Year period, we had over 500 people in the showroom daily,” he said. “The showroom is designed to complement our flagship Richmond showroom, keeping with Winning Appliances’ unique multi-sensory shopping experience, offering a curated range of the world’s best appliance brands, in a footprint of 600 square metres.” 14

Appliance Retailer February / March 2020

The Richmond and Chadstone showrooms were the first to be designed using a neuroscience-based approach. “When we designed our flagship Richmond showroom, the layout and product selection was based on an understanding of our most important customer segments, their needs, wants and personal styles. While the footprint of Chadstone is smaller than Richmond, the same design approach, objectives and customer journey have been carried over,” Winning explained. “Due to the smaller floor plate in Chadstone, we worked together closely with our valued brand partners to create unique state-of-the-art displays, which showcased the latest technologies and designs. Samsung will bring its rotating Sero TV (Sero meaning vertical in Korean) to Australia in Q2 2020. The Sero can pivot between horizontal and vertical orientations, similar to a smartphone or tablet. The TV’s display orientation technology connects with a user’s smartphone to display content in traditional horizontal format as well as vertical format, ideal for social media channels, YouTube and personal photos and videos. With Tap View technology, users can simply tap the TV with their smartphone and content will be mirrored so when the smartphone is rotated to horizontal or vertical orientation, the screen will follow. The Sero has wheels at the bottom of its base so it can be easily moved around the home. Alongside the Sero TV, Samsung unveiled its latest QLED 8K TV – the Q950 – with an infinity screen that produces a screen to body ratio of 99% and measures just 15mm in width. Samsung Electronics confirmed that the Q950 will be available in Australia by mid-2020 in three sizes: 65-, 75- and 85-inch. The Q950 is equipped with an AI Quantum Processor 8K to upscale non-8K content and Adaptive Picture technology that optimises the screen based on ambient conditions and individual images. COFFEE MACHINES still delivering strong and consistent growth BY EMILY BENCIC Whether it is fully automatic, manual or single serve, coffee machine sales continue to go from strength to strength. With the resurgence in drip filter coffee and growing addition of coffee machine accessories such as grinders and milk frothers, consumers have more choice than ever before. The key drivers of category growth are demand for café quality coffee experiences in the comfort of the home and the ability to personalise coffee recipes by customising bean type, strength and quantity, as well as milk foam and temperature. Previously this may have appeared intimidating for consumers but with the latest technology, some of the guesswork has been taken out. One retail group has observed an increase in average sell price (ASP) as consumers opt for better quality ‘barista’ style automatic or manual machines that allow for this customisation. And there remains huge opportunity for further growth with only around 50% of households regularly using a coffee machine and instant coffee is still a popular choice.

JURA

Melinda Nuzzaco Marketing Executive The continued success of the S8 – Jura’s bestselling coffee machine for the majority of 2019 – confirmed a strong appetite for premium mid-line machines, according to Jura’s Melinda Nuzzaco. “The category is looking healthy with the consumer buying cycle in full evolution with key segments of the market coming to Jura to upgrade an existing coffee system,” she said. Automation continues to trend strongly with internal Jura research indicating preference toward automatic coffee machines as they provide the easiest route to quality coffee and value convenience. A new feature in the Jura product mix is Automatic Grinder Adjustment (A.G.A.) with two self-adjusting grinders designed to extend the service life of the machine and avoid early deterioration from long-term use.

Another new feature, unique to the Jura GIGA 6, is the ability to prepare a cortado – the Australian equivalent of a piccolo. It is the only machine in the Jura range that can make a short, milk coffee with Pulse Extraction Process (P.E.P.) espresso. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is also finding its way into the operation of the home, kitchen and now the coffee machine. “AI allows the coffee machine to identify personal preferences of every household and adapts the start screen automatically. An algorithm continuously monitors drinking habits and only displays favourite coffee beverages with no need for further programming. This makes the machine more intuitive to operate.” AR

NESTLÉ

Bryan Win Marketing Manager The in-home coffee market is being driven by premium products with growing expectations for a high quality, authentic, engaging and innovative coffee experience at home, Nestlé’s Bryan Win said. “Cafés provide the benchmark for authentic and quality coffee experiences, so consumers are increasingly seeking this same experience in the comfort of their home,” he said. However, instant coffee remains the most popular coffee segment with 65% of coffee consumed at home being instant. “This provides an opportunity for retailers to trade-up consumers. We are already seeing more Millennial customers entering the category with a capsule machine rather than instant coffee.”

Nestlé research has shown that capsule, solo traditional and fully automatic coffee machines grew 6% in units for the year to November 2019, but single serve capsule machines experienced a 4% decline in units over the same period. In 2020, a key focus for Nestlé will be the acceleration of the Starbucks brand within electrical retailers. The Starbucks by Nescafe Dolce Gusto (NDG) range of coffee capsules launched into market late last year with six signature flavours. Each capsule is recyclable and made from 100% high quality Arabica coffee. New in-store execution items including machine plinths, capsule towers and upgraded in-store demonstration units were rolled out to support the launch, focusing on the idea that ‘Starbucks Coffee Is Coming Home’. This year, more permanent in-store displays will be rolled out along with additional Starbucks products. “Starbucks is an iconic coffee brand recognised around the world, so we aim to make Starbucks more central to our plans and use it as a beacon to draw shoppers into stores,” Win said. Jeff Wong Marketing and Communications Manager Coffee machines continue to enjoy healthy growth, particularly within the portioned segment, which accounts for more than one in two espresso and single serve filtered coffee machines sold, according to Nespresso’s Jeff Wong.

The latest product release from Nespresso is the Creatista Pro coffee machine featuring an interactive colour touch screen with visuals to guide preparation, save personalised beverages and perform coffee extraction and milk preparation simultaneously.

“Nespresso helps drive the single serve category with the introduction of new technology and strong promotional activity at key buying periods,” he said. Many consumers seek a coffee machine that can provide versatility and ease of use at an affordable price point and this can be found in the Vertuo portioned coffee system with five different cup sizes at the touch of a button. There is also strong demand for machines in the mid-high price segment, such as the Creatista Pro and Gran Lattissima, designed for consumers looking for increased functionality. “Nespresso portioned coffee systems are an ideal solution for consumers who want quality, consistent coffee with no fuss or need to clean up.” Although the current macroeconomic climate is posing a challenge for many appliance categories, it may pave the way for increased coffee consumption at home and in turn, more machine sales for home use, according to Wong. “If discretionary spend on take away coffees, as well as food and beverage more broadly,

NEWELL BRANDS

Elena Pintado Senior Marketing Manager – Appliances and Cookware Coffee machines remain a strong growth category within the appliance market, supported by the rise in specialty coffee blends in local cafes and drip filter machines becoming increasingly popular, Newell Brands’ Elena Pintado said. “It is encouraging to see manual espresso machines showing exceptional growth as Australia’s love for coffee continues and consumer expectations increase when it comes to the athome coffee experience,” she said. Coffee connoisseurs seek brands and products that help make the step toward a manual coffee machine easier and less intimidating, and as an appliance that always sits on the kitchen counter, they need to look the part. “Machines that are compact and sleek with on-trend colours are in high demand.” The original EM5000 Café Barista machine is the number three coffee machine in volume terms in the manual espresso category and growing at over 20% year-on-year, according to GfK data. “The traditional manual group-handle gives the user a barista experience, while the automatedmilk function takes the guesswork out of milk heating and frothing making it a great first at-home manual espresso machine. The strongest trend driving category growth is increased consumer education and greater understanding of the requirements for a perfect cup of coffee. “Our machines are created with personalisation at front of mind. With technology such as Sensor Grinding and Smart Tamping, the De’Longhi La Specialista takes out some of the guesswork.” Hull has also observed a resurgence in the drip coffee market with the success of the De’Longhi Clessidra drip coffee machine launched in 2019. “It can prepare two different types of coffee with ease – a lightly balanced traditional drip coffee or an automated pour-over with depth of flavour.” A key challenge for the category is consumers being able to find a coffee machine that best suits their lifestyle needs, which is why De’Longhi tailors its coffee machines to suit all lifestyles. “De’Longhi continues to focus on coffee awareness and education with strong consumer media campaigns during peak periods, bonus offers during gifting periods and an ongoing inhome barista service for premium machines.” AR www.applianceretailer.com.au

The electric heating market declined in units and value over the last 12 months, by 13% and 14% respectively. While the category benefited from an end-of-season unit spike in August/September the volume sold in key periods were below last year, according to the latest data from GfK, with the majority of heating types affected during the season downturn. And more consumers are coming to the ‘smart home devices’ party with Amazon Alexa and Google Home as Wi-Fi is now a popular feature when it comes to controlling household air conditioners.

MITSUBISHI ELECTRIC

Garth Hickey National Retail Sales Manager With unpredictable weather patterns recorded around the country over the last 12 months, reverse cycle air conditioning as a source of year-round comfort has come into its own. This provides retailers with an opportunity to provide personal comfort solution to consumers,” Mitsubishi Electric’s Garth Hickey said. “While air conditioning sales in winter can be somewhat reactive to the weather, we are seeing consumers more considered about their purchase. Consumers in the replacement market use the benefit of hindsight to select models and brands more in tune with their demands for high performing and reliable systems.

Mitsubishi Electric Reverse Cycle MSZAP25VGD

`Night mode `Ultra-quiet in heating mode at 18 dB(A) `Dual barrier coating keeps unit cleaner for longer RRP: $1,350

Consumers are also looking for comfort when the family is sleeping. This means air conditioners need to be quieter both inside and outside the home, so as not to disturb their sleep or bother neighbours. Mitsubishi Electric included a night mode into the MSZ-AP series which does both.

And he said the strongest trend is coming from consumers valuing brands and their reliability. “Over the last 12 months, MHIAA was recognised by CHOICE as the ‘Best Brand of Air Conditioners’ for both 2018 and 2019, and the 2019 ‘Canstar Blue Most Satisfied Customer’ award. These two awards and their test reports highlight the importance consumers are increasingly placing on brands that are considered not only top quality, but also reliable and easy to use, going beyond just heating and cooling, offering customers a full range of features and functions designed to meet their needs and lifestyle,” Brown said. He believes energy efficiency is a topic that all air conditioning manufacturers must consider when developing their heating solutions as consumers become increasingly aware of the energy efficiency of their units and what it means, not just for their household bills, but also for the environment.

“With some regions continuing to experience increasing gas costs, we have noticed an uptake for air conditioning systems being used as a yearround solution for both heating and cooling and expect further growth in this category.” Research conducted by Mitsubishi Electric found the level of concern for most Australians about the cost of energy is growing, up one percentage point from last year. The study also found that Australians consider electric heaters the biggest contributor to high energy usage. Consumers should expect up to 47% energy savings on new air conditioning systems, compared to older models. “That’s the message Mitsubishi Electric is promoting for year-round comfort through various promotional activities,” he said.

Room heating has always been a strong category for Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air-Conditioning Australia (MHIAA). “With climates continually changing, we are seeing colder temperatures across the board and in some parts of the country, longer periods where room heating appliances are required,” Adrian Brown said. “As a result, demand for reverse cycle air conditioning for these areas has increased and with it, the need for manufacturers to develop suitable solutions to meet the needs of Australian consumers.”

FUJITSU GENERAL

George Tsiotras National Retail Manager Households buying air conditioning systems are generally influenced by the weather, and yearon-year the category experiences sales peaks and troughs, and this will continue as the Australian climate remains unpredictable, according to George Tsiotras. However, when making a significant investment such as an air conditioning system, consumers need to be presented with a variety of options, and Fujitsu General addresses this with a wide selection of models, systems and designs to meet different home layouts, lifestyle requirements and budgets, he said. “Consumers continue to want high quality, energy efficient products that represent value for money and, as a result, reverse cycle air conditioning systems dominate the category. In retail, split systems continue to outperform other air conditioning solutions however there is still a growing interest in multi systems as consumers can now find a whole home solution in retail channels. When it comes to challenges Tsiotras said while consumer sentiment remains low, which can impact categories with higher price points, consumers generally approach the purchase of an air conditioning system as a long-term investment that adds value to their property, which helps keep the category buoyant. As for a hero product he said it is hard to go past the Fujitsu General multi-systems that allow consumers to heat and cool up to six rooms from one compact outdoor unit, without compromising outdoor space. It offers flexibility for modern home interiors, as well as saving space outdoors. Each air conditioning unit is independently controlled using individual unit remotes to provide indoor comfort when and where it is required. AR 32

Trevor Francis National Business Development Manager A major issue still impacting the air conditioning category is the rising cost of energy. “Getting the message across as to how much more efficient the current air conditioning product is compared to older units is definitely boosting the replacement market,” Teco’s Trevor Francis said. Teco recently launched a new website that showcases the diversity of its business, from industrial to commercial and domestic products. “This investment is proving to be a huge benefit for both consumers and resellers. A modern website encompassing detailed product information and fast downloads reinforces our status in the Australian market,” he said. “Our preferred dealer locator on each product page is getting good consumer reviews as it is easy to use but concise in presenting stockists and their location in relation to the viewer.” The current Teco ranges of inverter split and portable systems incorporate models complete with built-in Wi-Fi. Being able to control air conditioning with these devices is now very high on customer’s expectations, Francis said, while some models also allow control using an Amazon Alexa device. The hero product is the Designer Series of reverse cycle splits featuring a sleek contemporary design, Wi-Fi control built in, I Feel function to allow the room temperature to be sensed from the remote control location and 3D air delivery. Onkaparinga Waterproof 2-in-1 Electric Blanket

BY KYMBERLY MARTIN

This report takes into account factors influencing growth of the electric blanket category. These include reliability, performance and ease of care, together with safety protection such as over-heat and auto-off. There is a growing focus on product innovation that is emerging in this season's new product lineup such as Wi-Fi for controlling the blanket remotely with a smartphone app. Also becoming more important are bedding materials made with natural fibres. To keep those electricity bills down, electric blankets and throws are also in demand as replacements or to accompany heating appliances.

category with yearly recalls, while Onkaparinga remains product-recall free. Electric blankets are one of our strongest product categories.”

Zane Nawrocki Sales and Marketing Manager The electric blanket category requires strong research, product development and the backing of a reputable brand to have an impact, according to Zane Nawrocki. “With our background in bedding the move into the electric blanket category is one we believe we can expand on.” He said new Onkaparinga and Jason products expected to hit retailer’s shelves in time for winter will assist in growing sales that have been increasing year-on-year. “Imported inferior product is having a negative impact on the

Nawrocki said the popularity of multi-purpose products has been strong in the past, and this trend provides value for customers knowing they are purchasing an item for year-round use. “Consumers are looking for multi-purpose bedding items such as waterproof underlays, waterproof mattress toppers and waterproof electric blankets. All of these items offer the customer the opportunity to purchase one product rather than add multiple layers to their beds.”

The Jason brand has also grown to be a key supplier in the electric blanket market, supplying to retailers and online, Nawrocki said. The popularity of natural fibres in bedding in the last few years has resulted in substantial growth in customer’s preference for natural materials in electric blankets. AR

BREVILLE

Nicolas Cauzac Category Manager Home Appliances Despite increasing electricity prices and generally poor thermal housing insulation, Australian households still consider heated blankets a good alternative to heaters, or a complement to them when it comes to staying warm, was a view of the category from Breville’s Nicolas Cauzac. “New apartments fitted with large, sealed window walls are acting like greenhouses and are usually 10 to 15 degrees warmer than the outdoors, which makes them more reliable to air-conditioners to cool down during summer time, but also less in need for heating in winter,” Cauzac said. The control of individual heat zones that made its way into the category with the BodyZone by Breville model also gives users unprecedented comfort, with individual heat settings for each side of the bed, as well as for the upper and lower body. Like many other categories, seasonal products, such as heated blankets, add significant benefits in getting better interaction with users, according to Cauzac. A first for the industry will be the new BodyZone Connect heated blanket with Wi-Fi connectivity and an app for remotely activating and controlling via smartphone. This product will be launched in March. AR

AR FLOORCARE

Sticks and robotics continue to stand centre stage BY EMILY BENCIC The floorcare market experienced a 4% increase in value and 2% decline in units sold in the 12 months to October 2019, GfK data has shown. Value was primarily driven by stick vacuums, robotics and wet and dry models. In the stick vacuum sub-category, lightweight design and increased suction power were key. In robotics, connected technology led the way with almost three-quarters of units sold now featuring smart connections. Despite the barrel category continuing to experience declines, it has seen some signs of recovery in recent months.

TECHTRONIC INDUSTRIES

LG ELECTRONICS

Brad Reed Senior Marketing Manager – Home Appliances Handstick vacuum cleaners continue to be a popular choice among consumers as they have evolved from being used for spot cleaning to being capable of cleaning an entire household with longer lasting batteries, more powerful suction and versatility to clean a variety of surfaces, LG’s Brad Reed said. “Australians are seeking appliances that make everyday tasks easier and less time consuming and manufacturers are now catering to their evolving needs and providing a quick solution to everyday mess,” he said. However, LG recognised a gap in the market with many handstick vacuum cleaners providing poor battery life, a power trigger that needs to be held down during the clean and weak suction power. In response, the LG CordZero handstick vacuum range was developed. “With the dual battery pack, the CordZero handsticks deliver a combined runtime of up to 80 minutes, the one touch control trigger removes the need to hold down the button to power on and reduces wrist strain, and AeroScience technology offers good suction through a smart inverter motor,” he said. Another key trend witnessed by Reed is demand for devices that clean more than the floor such as windowsills, ceilings, soft furnishings, bedding and vehicles. “This led to the development of tools and attachments, such as the Power Drive Mini attachment included with the LG CordZero A9 Pro, designed to remove dust, dirt and pet hair from soft furnishings without tangling thanks to brushless technology and a motorised rubber roller.” With such a wide variety of vacuum cleaners for consumers, the purchase decision can become confusing with various cleaning demands across different households, posing a challenge for consumers. “Our CordZero handstick vacuum range addresses pain points when it comes to runtime, suction, as well as tools and accessories. LG also offers a 10-year warranty on the smart inverter motor, 12-month warranty on the batteries and two-year warranty on parts and labour for added peace of mind.” AR

Craig Knighton Category Marketing Manager – Floorcare Stick vacuums have evolved to become a whole home floorcare solution and cordless technology gives consumers the choice of how and when to clean their floors, according to Techtronic Industries’ Craig Knighton. “Battery technology has improved, allowing for quicker charging, longer runtime and lightweight design,” he said. “However, there remains a sizeable consumer group that prefer the performance, ergonomics and familiarity of corded products such as bagless cylinders, steam cleaners and carpet washers. Although innovation in this category has slowed, consumers demand choice and a clear price and range strategy will be a key brand differentiator in 2020.” Knighton said the floorcare category presents an ideal opportunity to explore connections between busy lifestyles and their impact on health, wellbeing and quality time. “Floorcare products can fuse health, hygiene, convenience and labour saving – a fertile ground for innovation.” The biggest challenge in the category is compression of retail prices that puts pressure on margins, making return on investment a priority, he said. `3D fine dust and lifetime HEPA filter `Extra-large wheels and precision handling `155km air speed to efficiently collect dust `Controlled emptying system for hygienic disposal RRP: $599

“Powerful German engineering is at the core of the entire Bosch floorcare range and cordless vacuums are no exception; from the Athlet Ultimate cordless with a runtime of up to 75 minutes to the Readyy’y 2-in-1 cordless with detachable handheld vacuum for added flexibility,” she said. With improved runtime and cleaning efficiency, cordless vacuums continue to be the preferred choice over traditional canister models, and consumers are now more educated on the two types of cordless cleaning – the spot cleaner and the cordless cleaner. “As consumers better understand the difference between the two – the former, ideal for a quick clean in a small area, and the latter, powerful enough to clean the entire house, they can make more informed decisions about which best suits their lifestyle needs.” Another trend observed by Pejovic is the number of consumers downsizing their living spaces, meaning storage is more limited. “The footprint of the vacuum and amount of space needed to keep it when not in use may become a deciding factor in the purchase. In response, the Bosch Unlimited vacuum comes with a wall mounted docking system, while the Bosch Athlet range has a freestanding design, removing the need for a dock even when charging,” she said. Bosch recently introduced the Athlet Ultimate to the Athlet range with a 32.4V battery – the most powerful battery in the range yet, allowing for extra-long runtime of up to 75 minutes. This is combined with an efficient and aerodynamic longlife motor for intensive use. The Athlet Ultimate is Choice recommended. AR

ELECTROLUX

Tanya Mudge Product Line Director Electrolux’s Tanya Mudge said the floorcare category provides a consistent opportunity for products to evolve with multiple cleaning devices in the home becoming commonplace. “For this reason, there will always be room in the market for new demand, if the category continues to deliver technology using consumer led insights to inform product development,” she said. Category growth is being driven by convenience, whether that be a robotic for autonomous cleaning or cordless handstick for easy everyday cleaning. “Consumers like to clean their house in the evening or when they have a spare moment before running out the door.” Just like the wider appliance market, the floorcare category is being impacted by general market conditions, although consumers are willing to spend money on their vacuum as a necessity. “However, manufacturers need to constantly stay on top of consumer trends, demands and new technologies.” Mudge said although not new, technology in robotic vacuums has accelerated quite swiftly. “Improvements to the connected experience has enabled sophisticated interfaces with an app and relevant improvements to the product with features such as virtual walls and scheduling.” AR

DYSON

The Bissell CrossWave established a new wash and vacuum category when first released and continues to be the hero product with more innovation planned over the coming years. Most recently, a cordless model was released to the market.

RRP: $1,249

Company Spokesperson Dyson claims that its Cyclone V10 and V11 cord-free vacuum cleaners have supported value growth in the floorcare category with recent GfK data showing that Dyson Australia remains the number one brand in value for floorcare and small domestic appliances. Since the launch of the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner in 1993, Dyson has continued to invest in science and technology to re-engineer and evolve its vacuums to solve real problems better. With engineering and testing operations in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and the UK, Dyson is investing in engineering future technologies that solve problems that others ignore. The focus in the design of the Dyson V11 cord-free vacuum was not only improving performance but adding intelligence to genuinely assist cleaning routines. Three microprocessors monitor performance up to 8,000 times per second meaning that suction automatically adjusts depending on floor type, providing the right power. With an on-board LCD screen, users can see the unit’s performance in real time, including selected power mode and remaining runtime second-bysecond. It will also remind users when to clean the filters for optimum performance, inform of any blockages and how to clear them. AR

Another recent launch from Bissell is the SpotClean Turbo that is larger and more powerful than the original SpotClean. Designed to remove spots, stubborn stains and embedded dirt from carpets, rugs, upholstery, mattresses and car interiors, its compact and portable design is supported by Heatwave technology that helps maintain constant water temperature throughout the cleaning process. Other key features include large removable water tanks, a soft-grip handle and a variety of tools and accessories. AR

Skincare and haircare beauty products are always popular gifts for Mother’s Day as consumers seek to pamper and provide a relaxing experience, Panasonic’s Tory Rooney said.

“Consumers are looking for increased personalisation when buying gifts, which is why Panasonic personal care products, such as facial cleaners and hair dryers, cater to all skin types and hair types.” Another key trend during the Mother’s Day period is demand for products that are chemical free with proven wellness benefits. “Similarly, consumers want hair products that add strength and nourishment to their hair and skin, whilst protecting from pollutants. We know that women are concerned about hair damage, but often lack the time, know-how or technology to do anything about it.”

Elena Pintado Senior Marketing Manager – Appliances and Cookware

However, consumers are often overwhelmed by the gift choices available or short on time to shop, and consequently purchase a simple gift card instead, Rooney said. “Booking experiences and days out for mums and loved ones is also becoming a popular option, as sometimes a rest or getaway is what they appreciate the most.” Panasonic’s ionic facial cleansers are gaining traction in the home beauty market and more recently, the Panasonic hair dryer range was launched. A Panasonic survey found that Australian women aged between 25 and 45 are most concerned about hair damage when purchasing a hair dryer. “Panasonic’s EH-NA98 hair dryer is boosted with patented Nanoe technology to reduce visible hair damage such as split ends and frizz.” AR

During this period, CrockPot experienced a 4.3 point increase in value market share. Michele Sterkenburg Marketing Manager The personal care category has seen significant growth over the last three years with the largest growth from hair care appliances, Remington’s Michele Sterkenburg said, citing data from GfK. “We expect the category will continue to show growth due to continued innovation and increased above-the-line investment,” she said. Increased demand in lower priced, and simultaneously, higher priced hair care appliances is a major trend, which may be driven by an overall movement in Australian household income and wealth, Sterkenburg said, pointing to a recent ABS household income and wealth report. It found that the top 20% most wealthy consumers in Australia continue to grow their wealth, while the lowest 20% of consumers’ net worth has stagnated since 2004. The biggest challenge facing the personal care category is reduced shelf space across many retail stores, which she said is not reflective of category growth. “Consumers place a high priority on how they present themselves and we are seeing this with both males and females. They demand appliances which create multiple looks with the one tool to produce a polished, salon result. With a constant focus on technology, brands are delivering products that can achieve these results.” A feature that has emerged in hair dryers, are new attachments that make blow-drying hair easier into different styles, such as voluminous curls. The Remington Curl and Straight confidence hair dryer reflects this innovative design. AR

Retail in 2030: What does the future hold?

As we lament another year that’s flown by and settle into the year 2020, we ponder the many and varied changes, disruptions and technological advancements of the past decade, and it begs the question: how will retail evolve over the next 10 years, and what will consumer expectations be in the year 2030? VALUE AND EFFICIENCY

We hear more and more about Artificial Intelligence and Robotics pervading the retail space, however the good news is, based on many customer surveys both here and abroad, that consumers still place a big emphasis on value and efficiency, and they also want to be surprised and delighted by new and exciting innovations. Interestingly, one consistent message which was borne out was that consumers just want fresh, innovative retailers. So, as we gaze into the future, it’s clearly not about completely deviating from the traditions of retail, but particular concepts will need to be modernised and regularly updated.

THE IN-STORE EXPERIENCE

Despite much noise and conjecture to the contrary, around 92% of retail sales still occur in bricks & mortar stores. However, this doesn’t mean that stores can afford to rest on their laurels. It means stores need to be even more diligent in perfecting their in-store experience. The key to this is to prioritise people, as over 50% of shoppers surveyed said that skilled sales staff were a deciding factor in where they shopped. That’s not to say technology isn’t also important, especially with consumers, particularly youngsters, becoming more channel agnostic. Combined, just over 70% of Millennials and Gen Z consumers want retailers to remember their preferences as they switch from researching, browsing, and buying across both online and in-store offerings.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Of course, consumers are interested in technology, but frustrating retail experiences with clunky self-checkout registers and AI-enabled phone attendants have made consumers wary of automated experiences. In a recent survey,

only around 10% of shoppers were interested in seeing customer service robots in retail in the next 10 years, while over 31% expect to see a more seamless check-out experience over the next decade. While the appeal of the latest tech will always be a lure, retailers are well advised to focus their tech investments on back-of-house utilisations that improve logistics, efficiency, and inventory management to provide a more frictionless experience at the front-end for the customer.

IT’S A PEOPLE INDUSTRY

Shoppers definitely don’t want to see the same tired retail concepts in this age of technology and innovation; however, they also don’t necessarily want all the latest bells and whistles either. Retail will remain a people industry, where face-to-face interaction remains vital, coupled with retailers introducing new exciting retail and marketing concepts, and upgrading their technology to create seamless and efficient shopping experiences.

RETAIL IS NOT DEAD

Whilst retail is changing, and there will continue to be casualties along the journey, retail is not dead. In fact, retail is far from dead. Retail stores with poor store experiences are dead. The glory days of retail are over where the retailer with the most convenient location wins, regardless of the instore experience. This is because consumers didn’t have the choices they have today. Today, eCommerce has changed the retail landscape, giving consumers the convenience to shop in any online store they want, 24/7, from the comfort of their armchair. This puts the onus back on the bricks & mortar retailer to provide a pleasant, efficient, professional and memorable shopping experience. Over the next decade, retail won’t die. Only retailers providing poor in-store experiences will. AR www.applianceretailer.com.au
