Online investment should not come at the expense of B&M stores
C
ovid-19 and the associated lockdowns have forced consumers to re-think how they shop for products. And it comes as no surprise that online shopping has set new records with many discovering its convenience for the first time. According to recent research from leading parcel delivery service, CouriersPlease, almost two-thirds of Australian consumers shopped online more frequently during lockdown when compared to pre-Covid-19. This was led by under-30s (80%), followed by those aged 30 to 50 years old (67%) and over50s at 53%. Online shopping is expected to ramp up even further off the back of a mammoth Black Friday and Cyber Monday bonanza, with the National Retail Association forecasting a 53% year-on-year increase in online spend to reach a record $5.2 billion by the end of December. To meet the unprecedented growth in online, many retailers and brands are investing in fulfilment capabilities for online orders, but this should not come at the expense of the in-store experience. Despite the challenges presented by stock shortages and many sales reps still unable to call on stores, retailers need to support consumers who are choosing physical stores, particularly for premium products. Last month, Western Australian retail mogul, Rick Hart opened the
doors to his new upmarket appliance showroom, Hart & Co. which encourages shoppers to interact, explore and experiment with products. With an inhome economist, customers are taken through the latest cooking technologies and can try the results for themselves, whether it’s cooking in an oven or washing a load of laundry in a washing machine. Post-purchase, customers are then invited back for a tailored class to learn how to get the most from their new appliances. For added peace of mind, there is a 100-day product satisfaction guarantee. Moving across the country to Queensland, AV specialist, Videopro is celebrating 40 years in business and we hear from executive director, Cameron Douglas about its history, the importance of culture and how Covid-19 has shifted consumer spending behaviour. Magimix currently shares its space with sister company, Robot-Coupe. The showroom displays the full Magimix product range including the Cook Expert and new Juice Expert 3, alongside a range of accessories, in all available colours. “The Magimix brand is built on quality, and we are excited to be able showcase this in our new showroom. Butcher Pierre Verdun created the first food processor in Burgundy, France, 50 years ago. He created a machine that could perform a variety of routine tasks such as chopping, grinding, kneading, and shredding. Not long after, his wife asked for a compact version to use in the home – and so the Magimix brand was born. Today Magimix products are still made in France and all come with

Online retailer plans to disrupt consumer goods rental market Start-up Australian online retailer, Gimmie has plans to disrupt the local rent-to-own market with a new buy now pay later (BNPL) model that slashes the cost of products including furniture, appliances, TVs and technology, by up to 80%. There are more than 900 products available from big brand names including Bosch, Breville, De’Longhi, Dyson, Electrolux, Fisher & Paykel, Hisense, LG, Miele, Nespresso, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, and TCL. Consumers can pay the ‘Cash Price’ in 90 days with zero interest or fees – or opt to pay a ‘Plan Price’ with instalments over one or two years – and if a payment is missed, there is a late fee of just $10. Gimmie founder, CEO and managing director, Scott Roworth said the business was created to disrupt the rent-to-own market and along the way, identified that some BNPL products are complicated, traditional finance products that advertise the good and hide the bad. “In the world of finance, complexity tends to drive profitability, as many of the fees and charges that generate significant revenue for these finance companies are hidden from customers in the fine print. or locking themselves into a three or four-year commitment at an exorbitant total cost, Roworth said. “It’s great to pay cash if you have it, but it’s not always possible for everyone. Gimmie gives you a smarter way to buy.” Gimmie said it is a responsible lender, working with customers to ensure that they can meet their payment obligations in the committed time frame. Gimmie has compulsory credit and ID checks for consumers with the payment plan being approved within minutes.

Sub-Zero Wolf opens Sydney showroom BY EMILY BENCIC

uxury refrigeration and cooking appliance brand, Sub-Zero Wolf has opened its first Sydney showroom in a heritage-listed building on Foveaux Street in inner-city Surry Hills. The new space complements its existing Melbourne showroom at the Bank House, which was opened in 2015. This year, Sub-Zero Wolf is celebrating 75 years of manufacturing, so it was important to find a location with character and heritage that tied in with the design of the product displays, managing director for Australia, Andrew Mumford told Appliance Retailer. “Globally, our showrooms reflect our premium product and are designed to not only inspire

end-consumers, but also architects and interior designers,” he said. “It was a challenge to find a suitable location in Sydney because we wanted it to be central to the city and wanted the space to cater to both a showroom and dining area for retail training and pre- and post-purchase for customers to immerse themselves with the product. “The space is 300 square metres, and we haven’t changed the building itself because it’s a heritage-listed building and we wanted to work with the exposed brick. As you enter, there is a heritage wall with a snapshot of the brand’s history for people to understand that we are a family-owned business that has been manufacturing in America since 1945.”

We also plan on hosting official launch events with our various partners in early 2021.” When asked how the pandemic has impacted luxury appliances, Mumford said 2020 has been a strong year for SubZero Wolf with sales up on last year. “People are investing in their homes and looking at quality products. As our brand grows in the market, we are finding that more people are happy to pay a premium if they can see value. I know that $20,000 is a lot of money for a fridge but if people are building their dream home, their property value is going up and they aren’t going on holidays, they will invest, particularly once they come and see the product quality for themselves. All of our SubZero refrigerators are hand welded and polished with no exposed screws and our hinges are made and designed in-house.” He did confirm that sales in Victoria were impacted by the lockdown as people weren’t able to visit retail showrooms. However, in Sydney, Sub-Zero has
secured a number of major commercial projects including Crown Residences, Opera Residences and Harrington Street, which has been great for brand awareness, according to Mumford. The Sub-Zero Wolf showroom is now open at 63 Foveaux Street in Surry Hills from Monday to Friday. AR

offering including video conferencing, smart workplace technology, streaming solutions, collaboration platforms and interactive displays. According to Videopro executive director, Cameron Douglas, this speaks for the longevity of Videopro people because it is a more considered purchase for this type of product. “If a customer wants to purchase an $800 TV, they can go online, but if they are looking to spend $6,000 on a TV, they want someone who can provide more support and advice,” he said. “We are grateful that a lot of our team have been on a significant part of the journey. For us, culture is everything. We respect our people and although continually striving for growth and improvement, refuse to do so at the detriment of losing great people. Burning people out is not part of our DNA.” Douglas said the Videopro business model has always had a strong relationship culture and staff morale has become a competitive advantage. “We make sure that people want to work for Videopro and that we maintain longevity. We have people in our retail stores that have been with us for decades. How many retailers in consumer electronics have got people that are 10- or 15-year veterans? On the corporate side, it’s a similar story. We have people that have been with us for more than 20 years. It means customers come back to deal with the same person.” He believes there’s too much focus elsewhere in the industry on being a tech company to the point where everyone has forgotten how to be a customer company.
RETAIL PROFILE AR
“I understand that the customer experience and user experience get a lot of attention; however, with a lot of tech companies, you can’t even communicate with people, let alone have a relationship with somebody. I do believe in the ‘get big, get niche or get out’ model that is talked about in retail. To the point that we are niche, it means customers can come back and deal with the same staff for a 10-year period and I think that’s very unique nowadays.” As well as longevity, Douglas said the 40-year journey has had a lot to do with adaptability, diversifying the offering and changing with the times – or leading the change at times. “Adaptability comes from having a resilient culture because people are more willing to try new things. It is much easier to make mistakes with people who think fondly of the business as opposed to new people that come in. “We were proactive when the Covid-19 pandemic hit and we made a lot of hard decisions early in February, which was good because the subsequent months to May were absolutely challenging. I think we communicated well with our teams and we were on the front foot with meetings every two days for the first three months with a crisis team we had established at the outset of the pandemic. It’s too much for one person to just be wielding all the power when the rules are changing daily.” He said customers now have more money to spend because they can’t go out and enjoy themselves so instead, they are investing in their home. “Videopro is a relatively strong brand in Queensland but not as well-known in other states so we have seen greater online growth in retail across the country, especially from NSW and VIC. A national business is going to feel the impact of each state but being a Queensland-based business, we have been relatively protected from the ‘can we keep operating’ discussion.
Above: Inside the Videopro Newstead store opened in 2017 Bottom: Videopro store on Brisbane’s George Street in the 1990s
“Our industry is experiencing sales growth right now because a lot of other spending has been turned off, which is not necessarily sustainable growth. However, new customer acquisition has gone up exponentially for Videopro, and by providing a great experience to new customers, the likelihood of retaining them is high, which will in turn create sustainable growth. We believe that plays well into our hands, as we strive to provide a great experience for every customer we deal with.” The big question is, with a lot of people upgrading their products over the past few months, what does it mean for Christmas and discretionary spend during the festive season? “While stock has been an issue, we still have products coming in. It takes a bit longer, but it is still being made somewhere overseas. Early on, everyone was running their stock down to zero and nobody knew what was happening but now, if a customer is looking to buy something, it’s the regular customer journey – reading reviews online, watching YouTube videos and confirming with themselves what they want – so we are feeling positive for Christmas.” On a final note, Douglas said: “We will continue to help clients find us. People will buy the way they want to buy, and they want to be in control of the situation. It’s not about being frictionless because being frictionless is to not add any value. As soon as you’re frictionless then suppliers can just deal with the clients because we are unnecessary. It’s about making sure that any friction is a valuable piece to the puzzle. “For us, relationships are a derivative of a value proposition not the other way around. It’s got everything to do with value and making sure that we stay relevant and that people want to deal with us because they do have a choice. It’s not that we can’t offer a price advantage but if all the prices are equal then we will give customers a better experience and provide more value.” AR

icrowave ovens experienced an uptick in volume in 2020 as consumers spent more time cooking their meals at home, according to the latest
Euromonitor data. However, the average unit price of microwaves is declining year-on-year due to the strong price competition from private label and ongoing discounting by retailers. “Consumers are seeking versatile appliances to assist in meal prepping. Demand for readymade meals is increasing, considering they are convenient and time saving, resulting in the
need for a microwave oven to reheat meals,” research analyst, Angeliki Sfikas said. “Microwaves remain an essential kitchen staple in Australian households for time-poor consumers with the latest models capable of performing various tasks from reheating to baking. Despite the release of models which incorporate some smart technology, consumers are still reluctant to purchase smart microwaves as the category continues to lag behind the rest of the kitchen. “Although demand for such products remains low, as consumers incorporate smart technology into other appliance categories, they are likely to become more aware of smart microwaves over the forecast period.”

However, despite the trend toward more multifunctionality and steam cooking, consumers view microwaves as not particularly innovative, and have been less inclined to replace their old model. “We have also seen private label microwaves continue to drive ASPs down whilst growing in unit sales. These low price points have also created a ‘throw away’ mentality, contributing to landfill and negatively impacting the environment,” Gunn said. AR

Tory Rooney Product Marketing Manager – Microwaves Panasonic has experienced strong consumer demand for microwaves in 2020 and expects the growth to continue. According to Tory Rooney, it has never been more important to have reliable and multi-functional kitchen appliances with more Australians spending time at home. Recent research from McCrindle found that almost three quarters (74%) of Australians prepare five or more of their seven weekly dinners at home. “Changing cooking habits and the ongoing popularity of cooking and renovation reality TV shows are drivers for strong investment in a range of appliances for the kitchen,” she said. “Panasonic has developed microwaves to meet the evolving needs of the modern Australian family – versatility, convenience, healthy cooking and attractive, space saving design are important to them.” Time saving features such as combination cooking, pre-programmed family menus and one-push re-heating, are highly valued. With the addition of inverter technology, Panasonic microwave ovens can control power precisely and cook food gently and evenly from baby food to poaching eggs or baking cakes.

The easily refilled water tank with two steam outlets delivers an even dispersion throughout the oven and enables steam on both top and bottom levels. “Microwave ovens are also becoming smarter, taking the guesswork away from cooking and reheating time. The Panasonic Genius Sensor detects the humidity of food and automatically modifies heating and cooking. Jeremy Stewart Vice President Global Marketing The uncertainty of the pandemic has shifted consumer attitudes towards family safety and driven a spike in home improvements and renovations, Swann’s Jeremy Stewart said. “While burglaries have remained relatively low across Australia since the beginning of lockdown, home security sales continue to grow, and I attribute it to the ‘better safe than sorry’ approach because peace of mind is necessary for families to feel secure, especially during a time of unease.” Personalisation and customisation based on user behaviour is becoming a strong trend with the increased number of features available on the latest home security devices. “For example, Swann’s Wire-Free camera includes free facial recognition, allowing users to register the faces of the members of their family on their device. This allows users to know when people have arrived home safe. Other features include device integration with other smart home devices, such as Alexa or Google, for handsfree communication with the smart camera. “This broadens the scope of what traditional home security cameras have offered, from a 34

one dimensional, set-and-forget device, to an interactive device, which connects users to other areas of the home and family members through their phones and smart speakers.” However, there are still concerns around device security and the risk of hackers accessing personal information, which is preventing some consumers from investing in Wi-Fi-connected security cameras. “Without a proper understanding of how to digitally secure a product, hackers, and malicious actors outside of the physical space may access eyes into a user’s private home without a user even knowing about it,” Stewart said. “Users can protect themselves by doing simple things, like enabling two-factor authentication, making sure firmware is updated, and securing the Wi-Fi network with a strong password.” As for new technology making its way into the category, the Swann Enforcer range in 4K was highlighted as ‘one to watch’ in 2021. The Enforcer cameras feature motion-activated policestyle, red and blue flashing lights and spotlights to deter intruders and Night2Day technology for full-spectrum colour at night. AR

LASER
D-LINK
Chris Lau Managing Director
Graeme Reardon Managing Director Australia & New Zealand
Despite the uncertainty of this year, Laser isn’t expecting a slowdown in demand for smart home products and is preparing for a busy Christmas and 2021, according to Chris Lau. “The market has expanded rapidly, and we are proud to have played an important role in this. The smart home as a concept is becoming more mainstream and the ability to step into the category for $10 with our smart light bulb and build an array of combinations for under $100 has been widely embraced. It has given retailers talking points and encouraged more consumers to try one product at a time and build from there.” There have always been two major barriers for consumers – cost and education – with Laser tackling both aggressively over the last 12 months, Lau said. “We have been able to bring smart lighting and core smart home products including smart WiFi plugs down to a more affordable price. For example, we have the price of a smart light bulb costing approximately the same as non-smart LED lighting. Similarly, we are educating retail floor staff and giving them talking points that resonate with consumers – the $100 smart home, for example.”

Networking communications equipment have increased in popularity during the past six months; most notably, wireless mesh systems and the latest Wi-Fi 6 offerings. “With consumers spending more time at home, they are upgrading their home network to support working from home, increased streaming requirements and additional time spent gaming,” Reardon said.
“Since then, most consumer electronics companies have been playing catch-up, and with various restrictions in various areas ongoing, it’s certainly been a balancing act to ensure that a stable supply of goods have been available to customers.”
“We hope that with our affordable range, consumers look to buy products from a wellknown Australian company, available in highly reputable retailers, instead of taking risks with overseas purchases, especially with security and privacy as important touchpoints for consumers.”
“Now that customers are more comfortable with smart lighting, security and power – we see an opportunity in slightly more technical and complicated smart products as consumers enjoy the benefits and look to what other aspects of their lives can be automated,” Lau said. AR
“As Australia moves towards a more ‘Covid normal’ stance, cameras have started to rebound, but simultaneously a variety of cheaper products and brands have come into the market, driving ASPs down,” he said.
The biggest impact on category performance is supply chain issues on the back of the initial lockdowns that forced factories to close and services to slow down.
However, a key issue is product perception with products on global e-commerce sites that either do not meet performance expectations or are noncompliant and unsafe.
There are new additions to the CONNECT SmartHome, including smart fairy lights and outdoor Neon RGB lighting that can be automated to work together and controlled via a smartphone, as well as the CONNECT SmartHome Wireless Water Controller that can regulate water flow in line with schedules or weather patterns.
During the pandemic, the smart home category has experienced mixed results, D-Link’s Graeme Reardon said, with slower demand for security cameras as people spent more time at home, but there was a dramatic increase in sales of smart speakers and networking products to support working from home.

olume sales of imaging devices continue to experience a decline in 2020 affected by vertical competition and the Covid-19 travel restrictions, according to Euromonitor data. Despite the lockdown, consumers are showing an increased interest in streaming and blogging for both business and personal use with compact cameras benefiting from this. “Internet connectivity has been playing an important role in the camera industry,” Euromonitor research analyst Angeliki Sfikas said. “Demand to instantly upload photos and videos surged due to the increased social media user growth.” However, innovation in smart phone camera technology is toughening the environment for imaging devices, she said. “This resulted in major advancements in digital camera technology with huge leaps in image resolution from shooting speed improvements to fast autofocus systems in order to remain competitive. It is visible that entry level cameras are competing with smartphone capabilities, however manufacturers are expanding their semi-professional and professional ranges in order to cater to that consumer base.” In digital camcorders, manufacturers are focusing on versatility and durability to target adrenaline enthusiasts. When it comes to purchasing a camera,

Australians seek devices that offer creative control, high image quality and the option to attach different lenses depending on their needs and budgets, Sfikas said. The cameras market was heavily impacted by Covid and the drop in travel and tourism, according to GfK. For the 12 months ending September 2020, unit sales declined 25% and 18% in value. However, the market has bounced back with July, August and September representing three of the best five performing months of the year, the other two being January and February. Mirrorless cameras are the best performing segment, down just 6% in value in the 12 months ending September 2020, accounting for 47% of value, up from 41% in the prior 12 months. Within mirrorless cameras, it is the full-frame segment that is seeing the least decline, down 4% in value. Michaels Camera, Video and Digital managing director, Peter Michael told Appliance Retailer, there has been strong customer demand for mirrorless DSLR cameras. However, the post-Covid landscape in Melbourne still presented challenges for the CBD with a gradual return to its “bustling, busy self”, he said. “Melbourne is slowly recovering from its 100 days in lockdown.” Michael said the pandemic generated strong online sales while “old-fashioned darkroom supplies boomed”. PANASONIC
James Choi Product Marketing Manager – Imaging “The factors that have been brought about by the pandemic such as travel restrictions and social distancing mean that customers are looking for imaging solutions that meet a new set of needs, including streaming and live broadcasting, and this trend will continue as long as people are communicating online rather than in person,” James Choi said. According to Choi, there has been huge demand for cameras and camcorders to support the growth driven by the pandemic for streaming features, which has seen consumers and businesses alike require live and remote communication. The rise in digital video creation – from YouTube vlogging and other social content, to enthusiast and professional moviemaking – has seen a corresponding need for products across a range of expertise levels, form factors and price points to support this. “Panasonic has a strong reputation for providing a wide range of video-capable cameras from our V180 camcorder all the way up to our flagship LUMIX S1H full-frame cinema camera,” Choi said. “We continue to develop products and innovate in this space, as shown by the recent launches of the LUMIX
S5 camera and the LUMIX BGH1 box cinema camera, as well as the beta release of the LUMIX Tether for Webcam software which enables people to use LUMIX cameras as webcams for easy streaming and video calls.” The LUMIX line-up includes the G100, which offers OZO Audio with the quality and convenience to support video capture for universal playback and sharing across social media platforms. It provides creative empowerment and improved production values for serious content creators who want to standout audio, while still working with minimal equipment. The LUMIX S5, hybrid full-frame mirrorless camera packs the essential capabilities of Panasonic’s groundbreaking flagship S-Series cameras into a small, mobile and robust body. “Enthusiasts who want to take their creativity to the next level can harness the incredible image quality of a powerful full-frame sensor,” Choi said. The LUMIX S1H is a professional cinema camera for demanding filmmakers. This milestone S-Series camera sets new benchmarks in what cinematographers can achieve from a mirrorless system. SONY
Jun Yoon Head of Digital Imaging As imaging is a passion category, Sony is continuing to see increasing interest from enthusiasts keen to invest in their cameras and lenses, Jun Yoon said. “Another exciting element is all the new product and technology that is being released this year, especially within the mirrorless segment.”
“Another important point is that content creators are not just professionals, we can see that there is exponential growth in people posting and sharing their video content to friends, family and beyond. We expect this vlogging market to continue to grow sharply in 2021 too,” Yoon said.
Sony recently launched the Alpha 7C and the highly anticipated Alpha 7S III cameras. “This innovation is a critical and positive sign for the category, and we are confident the industry has a bright outlook for 2021,” he told Appliance Retailer.
The most obvious challenge this year has been the impact of Covid-19 on people’s ability to shoot content freely. The impact on travel for instance has affected the community as this is normally a driver or opportunity for content creation. “However, with restrictions continuing to ease, we are already seeing the community being more active again as photography and/or videography is their passion and we expect this to continue to improve.”
One of strongest trends in recent times has been the growth of video. “As customers, we are demanding more video. We consume it almost every waking minute of every day in social media, news, digital advertising, content streaming and so on. This demand and thirst for video has driven content creators to generate more content, and also improve their content quality, so it can be noticed and stand out from the crowd. 38

adopting mirrorless cameras at a fast rate so R&D is being invested to revolutionise speed, image quality, image stabilisation, and workflows across still, video and hybrid camera categories.
Brendan Maher Senior Manager – Consumer Product Marketing The impact of Covid-19 has seen the local camera market rapidly contract, with long-term forecasts seeing an overall slowing of the market, especially in categories such as Digital-SLR and compact cameras, according to Brendan Maher.
At entry-level, mirrorless cameras like the Canon EOS M50 offers consumers considerable benefits when it comes to the size and weight compared to traditional DSLRs. “At the top end, hybrid mirrorless cameras like the EOS R5 are fast becoming the must have tools among pros, especially in commercial and wedding spaces where clients want both video and still content. The mirrorless trend is not only sweeping across the consumer camera category, it has also made its way into cinema camera domain.” Maher said.
But despite these universal challenges, Canon Australia remains optimistic about the future due to the level of innovation in the category this year, Maher said. “In 2020, Canon released the best 1-Series, 5-Series and Cinema EOS cameras we’ve ever produced, setting new benchmarks for camera features such as image stabilisation, subject tracking and 4K/8K movies. “Additionally, in response to the mass migration to remote working, Canon was the first to go to market with free, innovative webcam software, EOS Webcam Utility, for Window and Mac users. “We saw a need for high-quality livestreaming, web conferencing, virtual working requirements, and personal video calls to keep families connected and the role our products could play in adding value to people’s lives so we shifted to accommodate this demand. This is a space where we will continue to innovate for the benefit of consumers.” He said mirrorless imaging technology is driving significant innovation in the category – not just for Canon but across the board. Consumers at all skill levels, from beginners to professionals are

2020 has presented many challenges with none greater than the impact of Covid-19. Prior to Covid-19, travel was the main purchase trigger for Australians looking to buy or upgrade their camera, followed by moments shared with family. Photography became a creative pursuit that many turned to in lockdown and camera and lens sales continued. Hobbyists picked up their camera and explored their limited surroundings to find stimulation and creativity in styles they perhaps hadn’t delved into before such as backyard macro photography or astronomy photography. As for new technology, inroads into hybrid mirrorless shooting really defined 2020, Maher said. “Our flagship interchangeable mirrorless cameras led the way in 2020 by enabling a range of first-to-market innovations in the consumer imaging category.” AR

espite Covid-19, it has been business as usual for the Camera House group. “We are less Melbourne dependent than some of our competitors as we only have two stores in the catchment area,” national marketing manager, Kieran Gallagher told Appliance Retailer, with most of its stores located in suburban or regional centres. “The big sellers for us have been top end DLSRs and mirrorless cameras and lenses, drones and a lot of video streaming product. Majors like Panasonic, Sony and Nikon revealed new gear in Q3 and these are also moving well, he said. Demand for 4K video and even the emerging 8K video functionality is particularly strong in the camera technology space. “The only products to have taken a hit are those associated with travel, such as compact cameras.” According to Gallagher, it has been something of a revelation during the pandemic as to how important photography has been when it comes to families and friends who are apart and sharing photos. “Photography has become more than a hobby and since Covid-19

a communication vehicle for people to stay connected.” He believes prospects for Christmas could be affected with stock availability a possible issue as a lot of vendors expected Covid to have more of an impact “so it could be challenging from this perspective”. “Pre-Christmas sales were digitally led with Black Friday and Cyber Monday as consumers got in early but there won’t be the spike in travel products that you would normally expect to see in a non-Covid year”, he said. Camera House’s Christmas consumer campaigns include a printed catalogue supported by digital activity. Gallagher said challenges post lockdown remain. “We are still Covid-aware and mindful of the impact it can have on local business. For us it is a more personal than corporate reliance when it comes to being Covid-safe.” Online sales continue to surge. Camera House recently took an omni-channel approach offering customers fulfillment options for online orders directly from their favourite stores that adds a personal connection to the sale as the customer receives contact from someone at the store. “Sales have been booming for the past two years and Covid aside, we were aiming for a significant online target and have maintained the momentum,” Gallagher said.
