As consumers place greater value on every square foot, every minute and every purchase, expectations for the products they bring into their homes continue to evolve. Increasingly, buying decisions are shaped not by a single benefit, but by the ability of products to solve multiple challenges at once—saving time, reducing effort, maximizing space and reflecting a commitment to more responsible consumption.
Convenience and sustainability are no longer competing priorities; they are becoming complementary expectations. The greatest opportunities lie where these values intersect, delivering smarter design, greater efficiency and lasting utility without unnecessary waste. In this issue of InSight Trend Index , we explore the innovations redefining everyday living—and the products best positioned to earn consumer attention, trust and long-term loyalty. and

The final installment of season three of the HomePage News InSight Trend Index examines the seemingly divergent tracks of sustainability and the saving of time, space and effort.
But if we learned anything from three seasons of scouring home and housewares trade shows across the globe for new and compelling products that embody key lifestyle trends, it’s that trends don’t exist in their own respective bubbles. And they evolve in harmony.
So as this edition of InSight explores the latest generation of products touting environmental responsibility and added convenience, look for the connective tissue that unites different categories into compelling whole-home lifestyle stories that can change the way consumers think of this industry.
Every single product in this edition shares the admirable objective to improve people's lives.
As for sustainability, we see an increasing movement by the industry to make eco-friendly benefits a
core of just about every product in development. The goal is to satisfy growing consumer expectations for such factors (and to compel more consumer demand for them) without compromising the primary values of performance, style, affordability and durability.
Such primary values are the same for products that save time, space and effort, three ease-of-living cornerstones of the housewares industry foundation. These traits continue to evolve to suit fluid lifestyle priorities, as is evident from the products in this edition of InSight . In most cases, if a housewares product idea doesn’t save time, space or effort, it has little chance of becoming a housewares product reality. Imagine the trifecta of a product that does all three.
The industry still has some work to do to cement sustainability into that foundation. It can happen, though, if it keeps everything connected.

Defining these practices continues to be a moving target. However, as we analyzed current consumer and industry landscapes, four pillars emerged as fundamental to understanding the importance of sustainable behaviors in the modern marketplace.
Products created using rescued waste materials that are no longer usable in their initial form or materials originally intended for recycling. Repurposing materials to minimize resource use and environmental impact.
Products that utilize organic materials and renewable resources, designed to minimize environmental impact by reducing pollution and conserving resources.
While few products can claim all four pillars, we’ve used the following icon system to indicate the primary focus and attributes of each product. Renewable Materials

Q: Trust has become a primary purchase driver for consumers. How can manufacturers and retailers address consumer concerns about greenwashing?

A: Absolutely! And the connection is only deepening. Consumers increasingly understand that sustainability isn't just about the planet; it's personal. The sofa you sit on, the finish on your dining table—these shape the air your family breathes. When shoppers learn that indoor pollutant levels can run two to five times higher than outdoors, "sustainable" stops sounding abstract and starts meaning "healthy home." For our industry, wellness is sustainability's most powerful translator.
Added resource bonus: Sustainability Furnishings Buying Guide: sustainablefurnishings.org/buying-guide

It’s crucial to understand that there are very real generational differences in sustainability attitudes, but these differences are less about whether consumers care and more about why they care.
One of the clearest shifts emerging in recent research is this:
• Younger consumers tend to view sustainability as part of identity, ethics and social alignment.
• Older consumers are more likely to approach sustainability through practicality, durability, waste reduction, health and value.
This shift matters in home and housewares because it determines:
• Messaging
• Merchandising
• Product Positioning
• Material Storytelling
• Pricing Tolerance
• Trust Expectations

Q: What trends are driving consumer purchases of home and housewares products, generally speaking?
KUHN RIKON
HOTPAN 3-in-1 Soft Cooking Collection

A: Consumer demand in home and housewares is being driven by three key trends: essential replacements for high-use items they purchased in 2020–2021, products that support at-home entertaining and fresh innovations. As dining out remains costly, consumers continue to cook and host at home—but routines can limit product use. Inspiring new dishes and experiences can reignite engagement. While consumers seek comfort, they also crave novelty. Looking ahead, the rise of GLP-1 medications may reshape eating habits, creating new opportunities for product relevance and growth.
Leatrice Eiseman Director, Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute
Q: In what way are environmental responsibility and sustainability issues influencing current color trends?

A: Environmental responsibility and sustainability speaks to the inclusion of a wider range of blues, blue-greens and cooler violets found in the surrounding sky and sea. Earthtones have expanded to include warmer orange reds as well as the entire brown family, including terracotta, tan and beige. Both of these color groupings represent a balance of warm and cool tones that are inevitably connected to an awareness of and the need to preserve natural resources.

As consumers move away from disposable products, brands are increasingly focusing on durability, repairability and circular design. Brabantia reflects this shift with household products designed for long-term use, offering warranties of up to 10 years and spare parts for up to 20 years. The company also promotes sustainable everyday habits— from reducing food waste to air-drying laundry, highlighting the growing role of sustainability in product design.

Q: With myriad aspects of sustainability and environmentally responsible behavior to consider, how should manufacturers and retailers prioritize their initiatives?

A: Consumers generally are more experienced and, therefore, more discerning when it comes to the marketing of sustainability factors in their household items. At this stage, many shoppers likely expect a degree of environmental sensibility in most products at little or no incremental cost. As such, manufacturers and retailers need guardrails when it comes to developing and promoting eco-friendly attributes. Such benefits are becoming a cost of entry, and they may be a tiebreaker for many consumers. But utility, performance, and yes, price, still rank higher for most end users.

& Transparency
One of the biggest emerging barriers to purchase is skepticism. In a recent survey
81% (87% for Millennials)
of consumers stated that trust is very/extremely important when choosing a retailer or brand for home and housewares products.
Consumers care about sustainability— but they increasingly distrust vague claims like “eco-friendly,” “green” and “sustainable” without clear proof or transparency.
That means these things are becoming more important purchase drivers:
• Certifications
• Traceability
• Measurable Claims
• Material Disclosure
In the home and housewares sector, sustainability initiatives most often succeed when framed as:
• Longevity
• Efficiency
• Practicality
• Quality rather than sacrifice or moral obligation.
Consumers surveyed said: Durability (49%)
Reliable Performance (42%)
were the top two quality traits most likely to influence their purchase decision.
Consumers respond especially well to:
• Multifunctionality
• Reduced Food Waste
• Lower Energy Consumption
• Long-Life Construction
• Refillability & Reusability
2026Springboard/IHAValueEquationIndex
are especially likely to expect brands to:
• Demonstrate Transparency
• Communicate Values Clearly
• Support Measurable Environmental Initiatives

of consumers surveyed said after-meal clean-up was most challenging/difficult for them of all household tasks. of consumers said maintaining personal spaces was most challenging/difficult.
Across all generations, nearly 1/3 of consumers surveyed cited a lack of available kitchen space as their biggest challenge when preparing food and meals at home.
Adrian Bredeson Co-Owner E-Power Marketing
Q: How can social media be used to identify emerging consumer trends and inform new product development for manufacturers and retailers?

A: Social media is the world's largest, most honest focus group, and it's always on. By tracking hashtags, saves and search behavior through social listening tools, and watching what top creators are making, what audiences are saving, and what comments are asking for, brands can spot tomorrow's trends today. When the same aesthetic, need, or frustration keeps surfacing organically across platforms, it's not noise. It's information that needs to travel upstream, past marketing, to product development.
As home spaces are expected to serve multiple functions and Minimal aesthetics advance, inventive approaches to space savings and storage steal focus.

Q: Why have space savings become such an influential consideration for consumers purchasing home and housewares products?

A: A major driver is the declining size of single-family homes. The National Association of Home Builders says this downward trajectory, which began in 2015, is a response to affordability. Despite today’s tendency to stay put, some downsizing is also occurring among older adults. In both instances, smaller houses mean less space for everything. Another reason is the rise of categories that demand space in the home (think everything for wellness, ice nugget makers). Space-saving products are the antidote for all these scenarios.

Q: In an environment where "living with less" has become a consumer aspiration, how are brands driving consumer engagement and loyalty?
AstroAI

A: Brands bring a sense of durability, reliability and trust. Established brands stay relevant when they evolve into consumer-directed companies—meaning they have committed to staying on trend with color and functionality, for example. When we polled consumers, nearly 70% said brands are extremely or very important. This was up from prior years and demonstrates that people will look for ways to keep brands close, even when times demand “living with less.”

Convenience has historically been defined as speed, reduced physical effort and accessibility. But newer research increasingly frames convenience as including mental and emotional effort as well. This creates a new mandate for features and benefits which can lower stress, save time and reduce cognitive burdens.
One of the most important current macro shifts is the rise of perceived “time poverty.” That means consumers increasingly view time savings, effort minimization and simplification as core forms of value, not just as "convenience perks."
As a result, these considerations have become three of the strongest drivers of home and housewares consumer purchasing.
This has huge implications for home and housewares because products most often succeed when they:
• Reduce Stress
• Create Efficiency
• Reduce Preparation Steps
• Simplify Cleanup
• Reduce Clutter
• Automate Repetitive Tasks
• Improve Storage Efficiency
That’s why categories providing opportunities for innovation and growth increasingly include:
• Multifunctional Appliances
• Meal Prep Systems
• Organizational Solutions
• Robotic Cleaning
• Easy-Clean Materials
• Modular Storage
• Smart Home Automation
• Refill/Reorder Systems
• Products That Reduce Maintenance
As always, each generation has different purchase drivers when it comes to meeting time and effort challenges. This is especially true for Millennials and Gen Z households, where time scarcity is felt most intensely.
This is why the same product may need very different messaging depending on audience.
Tom Mirabile Principal, Springboard Futures Consumer & Lifestyle Trend Analyst Curator & Author, InSightTrendIndex
Q: Why have multifunctionality and time savings become such an important purchase influencers in home and housewares categories?

A: As homes become harder-working, more multifunctional and emotionally central to everyday life, consumers are increasingly reassessing the role of space, ownership and complexity. The result is a growing shift toward intentional purchasing, simplified environments and products that justify both their footprint and their function.
Research increasingly suggests that crowded, poorly organized, or functionally constrained living environments can contribute to stress and reduced wellbeing. Consumers are responding by seeking homes and products that create a greater sense of control, organization, flexibility and emotional restoration.
Rooted in a growing desire to ‘buy less, do more’, demand for products with multifunctional capabilities continues to expand, with simplicity and customization as key purchase drivers.

Q: How are home and housewares product trends responding to the current economic landscape?

A: Particularly in housewares, trends are emphasizing the importance of multifunctional use combined with decorative value. That means combining multiple materials in new ways, such as wood and ceramic or glass and metal. Consumers are responding to products that they can leave as a centerpiece on their table or counter even when not in use for entertaining. In short, they're really looking for functional home decor.
As expectations for convenience and performance continue to rise, even the most familiar household products are being reimagined. Enhanced functionality, intuitive features and thoughtful design are breathing new life into everyday essentials—delivering solutions that work harder so consumers don't have to.

On an average weekend day, of people spend 30-45 minutes preparing food & meals. of people surveyed plan to cook at home more often in the coming year.
When asked what obstacles or pain points most hinder their desired lifestyle... of those surveyed said time limitations.
The future of consumer satisfaction lies in products that earn their place in everyday life. Consumers are increasingly gravitating toward multifunctional solutions that simplify routines, reduce effort and eliminate complexity while supporting more intentional living. As time becomes more precious and living spaces more purposeful, products are expected to deliver value on multiple levels—saving space, minimizing waste, reducing stress and making everyday tasks easier.
These priorities are reshaping the marketplace, fueling demand for products that help consumers declutter, organize, maximize limited space and make smarter purchasing decisions. Brands that recognize this convergence—and design solutions that respect consumers' time, space and values— will be best positioned to earn lasting attention, trust and loyalty.
The future belongs to products that do more with less—less time, less effort, less space and less waste—while delivering more value, more purpose and more satisfaction.
To renowned color expert Leatrice (Lee) Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute and the color/design forecaster for The Inspired Home Show, success in today’s discerning marketplace is all about interpreting the lifestyles and emotional “tugs” that will lead consumers to purchase your products, goods or services.
Whether reminiscent of the past or resonant with the future, Eiseman gives insight into the most influential and directional forecast for color and design choices in the coming year and reveals Pantone’s 2027 Home Color Forecast.
In this section, Lee shares the major trend directions that will resonate for consumers in 2027 and beyond.

"We look at the psychological aspect of color. It's not just what the hot color is, and it's not just about what the trend is. There has to be a reason behind it—and that's the rationale our trends come from.
The title of the Pantone View of Home Forecast, 2027 is 'Sense-Ability,' a fusion of two words. That means the ability to understand, to recognize, to value, to act, to react, especially as it relates to the sense of sight.”
Leatrice Eiseman Director, Eiseman Center for Color Information and Training, Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute
