t has become a very pleasant tradition for the Treasurer to undertake a visit to South East Asia during August and Joanna and I are recently returned from this year’s trip, on which we were accompanied by the SubTreasurer. As with my trip to Bucharest earlier in the year, it took me to some interesting buildings, although more importantly it enabled me to meet a great many Inner Temple alumni and other practising lawyers and judges in Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. In Hong Kong I met the Chairman of the Hong Kong Bar Association and his Vice Chairman and was briefed about the manner in which the constitutional arrangements put in place in 1997 are working. Extremely well, by all accounts, although the current arrangements only guarantee the survival of the common law for 50 years of which 17 have already elapsed.
