As everyone knows, the next best thing to nothing against your skin is a well-fitting undergarment, whether that’s swimwear, sleepwear or everyday items like bras or panties. And whether you’re a size extra small or a fabulous 4X, Chérie Amour has you covered. “We try to be as inclusive as possible,” says Laurie Barrie, who opened the intimate apparel store in Pullman with her husband, Scott, in 2022. Since launching the Chérie Amour brand, the couple have quickly become the go-to for all shapes, sizes and situations. When it comes to bras, for example, size really does matter. “Statistics show 81% of all women are wearing an inaccurate size bra,” says Laurie. Chérie Amour not only offers expert bra fitting, but they also carry bra band sizes 28 to 50 and cup sizes A through L. And they carry bras for women with unique needs, such as those who have experienced reconstructive surgery. Choose from among more than 75
brands in the store, many of them designed by women for women, and for all ages. Chérie Amour also offers sustainable brands that use recycled and recyclable material and uphold ethical practices such as producing 100% organic cotton garments. In addition, everything in the store is also available on the company website, says Laurie, adding that a trip to the store is meant to be a special and welcoming experience.

T
he Great PNW brings the vibrancy and soul of the Pacific Northwest to life inside its four walls. Inspired by owner and resident graphic designer Joel Barbour’s lifelong love of road trips, camping, skateboarding and photography, The Great PNW’s flagship store in Kendall Yards seeks to create an extension of how its customers feel about where they live. “There is nothing like the Pacific Northwest,” says Barbour, “and we want to inspire people and help people feel connected to the area.” Though Barbour and his team create upwards of 100 casualwear products each year, he maintains that his simplest graphics remain timeless. The store offers T-shirts, hats, beanies, shorts, socks and sweatshirts, to name a few — along with other assorted accessories like toiletry and duffel bags, stickers and decals, and drinkware. Most products are earth-toned, as is typical of the brand: “We have the floor dyed to look very organic, with a lot of wood textures,” says Barbour. The store’s location adjacent to the Spokane River and Centennial Trail effectively
creates an exciting, functional space that not only celebrates the beauty and spirit of Spokane, but also the city’s coolness. Ultimately, Barbour says, The Great PNW hopes to “spread the love for this great area we call home.” With slogans like “Trees & Lakes & Mountains & Coffee” and “Upper Left USA” printed across their work, it’s easy to see how wearers can spread the love, but also the pride and joy that so many of us feel as locals. Whether shopping online or in-store, the brand is all about cultivating an engaging, high-quality experience for customers. “Our demographic is so wide,” Barbour says. “We have a diverse range of graphics and products. Mom’s Custom Tattoo & Body Piercing
Clean, safe and accepting, all with a touch of artistic whimsy
B
eth Swilling — the mom of Mom’s Custom Tattoo & Body Piercing — takes safety seriously at her shop in Kendall Yards, where she works with a crew of highly trained tattoo artists and professional body piercers, including her daughter Scout. “We want this to be a safe place,” says Swilling, “where people can become who they want to become. To me, accepting the diversity of people fits into our paradigm.” Swilling believes the entire tattoo experience should feel empowering and safe, from consultation and custom design to aftercare. For 20 years, she has worn a surgical mask while tattooing. And once a tattoo is finished, Mom’s artists apply high-tech Tegaderm — a breathable, transparent dressing — to keep out bacteria and germs for days, something basic plastic wrap can’t do. Similarly, Mom’s body piercing standards go above and beyond basic safety. Every piercer at Mom’s is a member of APP, the Association of Professional
Piercers. That process demands “way more than what the state requires,” says Swilling. The shop’s APP membership means they can only sell body jewelry made with implant-grade materials. Mom’s embraces a sense of whimsy as well. “We worked hard to have fun little things like spiders and Sasquatch, not just gems,” she says of their body jewelry options. Another area of the store named “Mom’s Crystal Corner” is stocked with lighthearted gift items like stickers, greeting cards and small-batch candles, as well as “witchy elements” like oracle and tarot decks. The shelf also displays bath soaks and soaps handcrafted locally by Black Snake Botanical. As a First Friday Art Walk participant, Mom’s displays work from both local artists and in-house tattoo artists. Full-color prints and originals are available to purchase. alker’s Furniture & Mattress has come a long way since 1980, when founder Mark Walker opened his flagship store on Spokane’s Division Street and began selling unfinished oak furniture. These days, the family company — now in its second generation of ownership — has expanded dramatically, operating 13 stores in Washington, Idaho and Oregon. While shopping at Walker’s online is always an option, the company has found that when it comes to furniture, people want to touch and feel pieces first, making a physical store presence crucial. Having bounced back from an era of COVID-related restrictions and supply chain frustrations, Walker’s spacious showrooms currently display everything from luxurious Italian leather couches and modern, electric fireplace consoles to rustic Amish bed frames and geometric side tables. Their eclectic decor — including rugs, lamps, wall clocks and artwork — can enliven a lake cabin, refresh a family room or pull together an urban loft. Walker’s understands that their local customers have diverse tastes and lifestyles, and the company strives to serve those needs with a range of styles and price points — from starter

mattresses to heirloom-quality dining sets. “We have local manufacturers who can design mattresses so we can provide better price points for our customers,” says John Proffitt, Director of Quality Assurance for Walker’s. Walker’s is continually refreshing its product lines of both local producers and big-name brands. “A lot of things that were here a year ago have been replaced by something new,” he notes. In addition to creating regional jobs, Walker’s strengthens the community with charitable giving and in-kind furniture donations to families in times of crisis and natural disaster. Through a charity program named Walker’s Cares, a percentage of each mattress purchased is distributed to local causes including multiple local food banks. As the Inland Northwest’s population — like Walker’s itself — continues to grow, Proffitt wants newcomers to the area to know, “We’re local, we’re family owned so we can be nimble for our employees and the needs of our community. Yet we’ve grown in size where we can order in large quantities, have stock readily available, and pass discounts on to our customers. That’s an important piece to who we are.”

Close to everything — the South Hill, Spokane Valley, downtown, Gonzaga University — the District has undergone a big-time makeover and is drawing new businesses and shoppers to its fun-filled streets. “There are a plethora of new businesses down here,” says Carla Klauder, owner of Tickety Boo and Vibe Vintage. “The best part is that we are ALL local!” Upgrades to the district included streetscape improvements and traffic calming, funded by city of Spokane grants and the District’s local businesses. You’ll find four restaurants, six vintage shops, two furniture stores, three coffee shops and two grocery stores, all within walking distance and easy to find. “We are a consignment store and offer a variety of pre-owned furnishings, home decor, collectibles and so much more,” says Janet Taylor, who co-owns the shop with her husband Nick; they’ve been in the Sprague Union District for five years now. “Everyone enjoys shopping in our nostalgic 1931 building — many will listen to the music, sing and dance while shopping. We love it!”

and photo booths,” says owner Dana Reinke. “We provide an amazing portrait experience, and we’ve been in Sprague Union District for about 10 years now. This district has so many historic businesses and buildings. It’s been through a lot and came out shining bright on the other side.”

A Spokane tradition for nearly 80 years now, where kids have dragged their parents to see the live pets, while mom and dad can select what they need for their gardens to thrive. In 1978, Bob Mauk worked as a clerk in the plant nursery; in 2018, he purchased the business (along with its North Division location). “The highlight of my job,” Mauk says, “is the good feeling when you help somebody out and they’re appreciative of it.”

At Vibe Vintage, you can’t miss the beautiful green-and-black mural gracing the exterior. Inside is a fun mix of clothing, home decor and other surprises. Owner Carla Klauder says her shop specializes in mid-century modern pieces, throwback items and unique and unusual items from local makers. Just a block away is its sister shop, Tickety Boo, featuring what they call “Good Stuff” — “antique, lacy, rusty crusty heaven,” says Klauder — from over 40 local artisans.
