Or, take a quick trip up to B.C., and you’ll find RED Mountain outside the old mining town of Rossland, while Whitewater is just up above charming Nelson. DECEMBER

Among the Inland Northwest’s biggest family holiday traditions are the JOURNEY TO THE NORTH POLE CRUISES, departing three times each night all month long from the famed Coeur d’Alene Boardwalk. You’ll find ceramics, prints and more — showing off the region’s creativity.

An eclectic mix of bowls and glades and winding groomers stretched across 2,325 acres and two stunning peaks high above Chewelah, Washington, 49 Degrees North is prime winter sports habitat. But those thirsting for the steep and deep or that relaxing thrum of corduroy snow aren’t the only ones 49 Degrees North caters to. There are 10 miles of crosscountry ski trails here, with opportunities for track skiers, skate skiers and ski-jorers alike. For skiers and snowboarders, if it’s powder you’re after, head straight for Last Chance or Cy’s Glades off Chewelah Peak. Those who prefer a mellower, longer ride should cruise down Huckleberry Ridge to Bugaboo.

6 | THE INLANDER WINTER GUIDE 2021-2022

NEW FOR 2021-2022 The classic “Bonanza” Chair No. 1 double that had been in use on the mountain since 1972 is out. New this year is a high-speed Doppelmayr Quad — a 900-horsepower lift bearing the distinction of being the longest chairlift in Washington state. And yet, despite measuring well over a mile (6,644 feet to be exact), it manages to bring riders to the summit in under seven minutes — about half the time as the old one. Ascending Chewelah Peak at 49 Degrees North will now be almost as much fun as the descent. With the addition of 6 new runs in the central basin and extended snowmaking up Silver Ridge, the new chair accesses even more fun.

SKI THE TREES “Our tree skiing and riding is some of the best anywhere that I’ve ever been, and I’ve traveled all over the country,” says Rick Brown, 49 Degrees North’s director of skier and rider services. “It’s pretty tough to find someplace that stands out as being dramatically better in terms of getting out into the woods and on a variety of pitches with different spacing, from open to tight trees.”

Mt. Spokane’s Illuminator, once known simply as Chair Number Two, is the beneficiary of a million-dollar investment, ushering in a more efficient ride to the 5,889-foot summit. And for those who haven’t been up lately, this season is the time to fully explore the newly opened terrain off the Northwood lift that was installed in 2019. And watch for a new variety of menu items added to the grab-and-go offerings introduced last season.

For more than 80 years now, Mt. Spokane has been a local hot spot for riders of all skill levels. Six lifts offer access to 52 runs across 1,704 skiable acres, as well as numerous tree-sheltered powder stashes. Freestylers can hone their tricks in the resort’s popular terrain park, and beginners can learn the ropes with a multitude of lesson and camp options—including affordable learning opportunities for first-time skiers. The park will be open seven-days-a-week starting in December through mid-March of 2022, offering night skiing Wednesdays through Saturdays, opening up even more opportunities to get out on the mountain.

“We’re lucky to have so many exceptional regional mountains, but we’re different because we are a nonprofit located in a state park,” says Jodi Kayler, Assistant General Manager. “Our mission is all about community. We’re here to provide excellent service and make sure our community has access to this beautiful state park. We see ourselves as stewards of the mountain. It’s our goal to create lifetime adventurers and mountain enthusiasts.”

Good vibes & Endless adventure Voted #1 by readers of The Inlander for the best place to ski and snowboard, Mt. Spokane provides exceptional skiing and snowboarding for all ages and abilities. With 52 runs, 7-day-a-week operations, an epic terrain park, and a robust ski school, this special place offers something for everyone.

Local Sandpoint lore has it that an old Swiss hermit once called the area around Schweitzer home. Today, the resort’s 2,900 skiable acres attract more than those seeking forested tranquility. It is, after all, the largest resort in the Inland Northwest, and consistently ranks among the top in the nation. Shredders flock to the open bowls. Park rats love all of their three terrain parks. Families revel in the something-for-everyone vibe, from the extensive Nordic trail system to the assortment of bars, cafes and restaurants in the village. Skiing’s always been a bit of a mystical sport, and that sense of history makes Schweitzer special.

8 | THE INLANDER WINTER GUIDE 2021-2022

NEW FOR 2021-2022 For the first half of the 20th century, the Humbird Lumber Company was an economic engine and community mainstay in North Idaho. Schweitzer’s new Humbird Hotel, slated to open this season, honors that history with a three-story, 31-room facility that makes a stunning visual feature of its heavy timber construction. Designed by Portland’s Skylab Architecture, it will offer a boutique guest experience with a variety of room types, an onsite restaurant and bar, a fitness center and even a co-working space, all with central ski-in/ski-out access.

DON’T MISS IT If you’re planning a visit, you can’t go wrong during the holidays. The run from Dec. 17 through Jan. 2 is when the snow is coming down and the apres ski offerings are ramped up, from dining at the Chimney Rock Grill to browsing the Artist’s Studio, a co-op of local artists. And for a bonus, on Dec. 23-24 you may find yourself riding up a chairlift with none other than Santa Claus during Ski with Santa days. Book your visit at schweitzer.com.

NEW FOR 2021-2022 On the Montana side of Lookout, Chair two — The Timber Wolf lift — has been upgraded from a double to a triple chair, making it more family friendly. That chairlift also happens to be a linchpin in Lookout’s long-term acreage expansion. The company will have the NEW Eagle Peak in operation by Christmas with the completion of 14 new trails accessible this year via a Cat Skiing operation that runs by reservation allowing patrons to access 1,650 vertical feet and all of Lookout’s 1,023 Acres.

Just one hour and twenty minutes from Spokane, Lookout Pass is a snowfall magnet. Situated along the Idaho-Montana border just off I-90, the area attracts an annual average of more than 400 inches of snow, making it a regional favorite for early-season and consistent powder turns. The summit marks the meeting point of three separate lifts each offering a wildly different way to enjoy 540 of Lookout’s 1,023 available acres. Here Riders have their pick of long rolling groomers, powder-filled glades or steep moguled headwalls. And at the end of each day there’s the likely promise that next time, every track will be filled back in.

At Silver, getting to the slopes is part of the adventure. One gondola ride from the lower village, located just off Interstate 90 in Kellogg, Idaho, deposits you at the edge of 1,600 skiable acres with five chairlifts, a moving carpet lift, and an abundance of intermediate and advanced trails. Expert skiers on the hunt for a challenge can find plenty off Wardner Peak, accessible from Silver’s Chair 4, or the North Face Glades on the side of 6,300-foot-tall Kellogg Peak. The season is longer at Silver Mountain, making it one of the first in the region to fire up its lifts, and keeping them running after most others have closed down.

NEW FOR 2021-2022 Learning to ski is an important time, and protecting beginners from the elements is a priority at Silver Mountain. That’s why they’ve invested in a full cover over the magic carpet, making that process as positive as possible for young skiers and their families. Another new mountain mainstay goes by the name Minnie — Minnie the Mulcher. This new winch cat can secure itself to the station and cut steeper runs down the slopes, creating even more terrain to ski earlier in the season.

APRES SKI Silver is more than just great skiing. The lower village also happens to hold the region’s largest indoor waterpark, Silver Rapids, which includes an indoor surf wave and a second-floor saloon with hot tubs. There’s plenty of great dining right there as well, including Noah’s Canteen, Wildcat Pizza and the Mountain Cafe. To truly enjoy all Silver has to offer, make plans to stay at the Morningstar Lodge, right there at the gondola terminal. Book your stay at silvermt.com. EASY ACCESS OFF I-90, ONLY 30 MINUTES EAST

Actual Red Mountain is just one of the four peaks that make up the resort, and in fact is the smallest. The big daddy is Granite Mountain, looming smack in the middle of it all, seeming to say, “Welcome to the Kootenays. Have a nice day, eh!” The entire breathtaking scene is just 2.5 miles from downtown Rossland, B.C., a super quaint old mining town worth exploring (five-pin bowling!); also, Spokane’s just two-and-a-half hours away. Grab a pint at the Rafters Bar, or if you need a quick midday meal, they even have a ski-in taco truck at the bottom of Grey Mountain Chair.

In 2020, RED opened the Constella Cabins, offering an unforgettable highaltitude stay, right up on Paradise Basin; they sleep up to five. A budget-friendly choice among RED’s many options, the Nowhere Special hostel is just a two-minute walk from the lifts. There’s a shared kitchen and dining room, plus an outdoor area for year-round grilling; a bed in a fourperson dorm is just $39 CAD/night. Book at redreservations.com. And did you know RED Mountain is part of the Ikon Pass program that gets you access to resorts around the world? That includes Schweitzer, Crystal Mountain, Snowbird, Jackson Hole and more. Check out ikonpass.com.

CAT SKIING The skiing at RED Mountain is already epic, but if you want to access, say, 20,000 acres of pristine glades and bowls, good news: Big Red Cats is located right there at RED Mountain. A Big Red Day will cost between $399 and $599 CAD, but you’ll forget all about that when you’re telling your friends back home: We’re talking about up to 14 runs and 18,000 vertical feet of pure bliss in a day. Or, if you’re only interested in a run or two, RED also offers cat skiing on Mt. Kirkup for only $10 CAD/run. Visit redresort.com/get-lost for details.

From the treed steeps of Glory Ridge and Summit to the beginner-centric fare of the Silver King Chair, Whitewater has something for everyone in the family. The resort has long lived by the motto “Pure, Simple and Real… Deep” and they easily back that up, with an average of 40 feet of powder annually. If you like to get out in the backcountry, Whitewater has tons of terrain that can be accessed by chairlift. (Please check in to verify you have the proper equipment and education.) And there are five kilometers of nordic trails through the forests for cross-country or snowshoeing — all dog-friendly.

The relationship between Nelson and Whitewater is like mother and daughter. In fact, it was the people of Nelson who brought this beautiful resort into the world — with countless donations of goods and services, along with thousands of volunteer hours building it back in the 1970s. And at just 20 minutes from Whitewater, no visit is complete without hanging out in one of BC’s hippest towns. It’s so scenic, Hollywood filmed Steve Martin’s Roxanne there. With more restaurants per capita than San Francisco, a stroll down Baker Street is sure to reveal something delicious.
