FOR STARTERS

A beginner's guide to using cannabis in Washington state BY QUINN WELSCH

S

o, you’ve decided to add a little cannabis into your life. Congratulations. Whether you’ve recently graduated to adulthood or are a new resident of Washington state, there are a few things you should know before you begin. Let’s lay the groundwork.

ALL ABOUT THE PRODUCT

There is a multitude of ways to consume cannabis today, and most don’t involve inhaling any smoke. Users can find highquality cannabis products professionally packaged in edible (and drinkable!) form, as well as vapes, tinctures and even lotions. Just be smart about your purchases. If you’re new to cannabis, maybe think twice about that 100-milligram bottle of Ray’s Lemonade.

LAYING DOWN THE LAW

There are a ton of rules regarding marijuana in Washington — most of them are for businesses. For consumers, it’s pretty straightforward. Treat it like you would alcohol. The big takeaways: Don’t use it unless you’re 21, don’t drive under the influence, don’t purchase it for minors. Keep in mind that a police officer can arrest a driver for appearing (or potentially smelling) under the influence.

WHERE TO USE IT?

Unlike alcohol, there are no weed bars in Washington state. According to state law, you can’t even open a package of cannabis product in view of the general public or in a “public place,” let alone use it. You might smell it wafting from behind a music venue or at a festival, but be mindful that you’re not supposed to do that.

HOMEGROWN

Maybe the recent pandemic has turned you into a green thumb. Could you grow your own? Yes and no. Marijuana used recreationally must be purchased through a licensed retailer. However, Washingtonians who qualify for medical marijuana are allowed to grow up to 15 plants at home, depending on their status.

HAVE FUN

This should go without saying. Cannabis products can be a fun adventure. Just use them wisely. 

BE AWARE: Marijuana is legal for adults 21 and older under Washington State law (e.g., RCW 69.50, RCW 69.51A, HB0001 Initiative 502 and Senate Bill 5052). State law does not preempt federal law; possessing, using, distributing and selling marijuana remains illegal under federal law. In Washington state, consuming marijuana in public, driving while under the influence of marijuana and transporting marijuana across state lines are all illegal. Marijuana has intoxicating effects; there may be health risks associated with its consumption, and it may be habit-forming. It can also impair concentration, coordination and judgment. Do not operate a vehicle or machinery under the influence of this drug. Keep out of reach of children. For more information, consult the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board at www.liq.wa.gov.

CAN I HELP YOU? Befriend your local budtenders BY WILL MAUPIN

T

he world of cannabis is bigger than ever. Dispensaries offer products ranging from the traditional joint to concentrate products with names like shatter, wax or crumble that mean absolutely nothing to those not in the know. So, where to begin your cannabis journey? Unfortunately, there’s no road map. You’re going to have to decide for yourself. You’re not alone, though, and you’ll realize that as soon as you set foot in a dispensary. “Ask lots of questions,” says Justin Hutcherson, general manager at Cinder North. “New customers who come in and ask to be educated are the most fun to help.” Budtenders are passionate about cannabis the way sommeliers are about wine, and they’re just as knowledgeable. Good dispensaries train their staff to help guide everyone, experienced or novice, to the product that will best suit their wants or needs. The first question you should ask yourself, though, is why are you looking to try cannabis? Is your curiosity driven by the therapeutic or the recreational value of the plant’s effects? If it’s the latter, you’ve got a lot of options. “Prerolls are a great place to start because we have different sizes,” Hutcherson says. “For the most part you’re going to have 80 to 100 joint options to choose from.” Plus, a preroll is self-contained. Simply light and puff until you’re ready to put it out. They’re also great for honing in on your ideal strength and strain because of the variety available at low prices. If you’re looking for the therapeutic effects of cannabis, you may want to consider the other sections of the store, including edibles. And once you stray from the smoking sections you’ll start to find more products with a focus on CBD: edibles, tinctures, lotions, balms and more. Some products work in localized areas, only impacting the location they’re applied, while others work generally throughout the body. Some get you high while others don’t. If you’re concerned about these things, let your budtender know. There’s a theme here, have you noticed? It’s that interacting with your budtender is key as you embark on your cannabis journey. 

STRAINS

DON’T STRAIN YOURSELF Inside the world of cannabis strains

T

BY WILL MAUPIN

he nomenclature of cannabis can be completely confusing. Which makes finding the right strain difficult. There are some rules of the road, though, even if the most widely known might be completely untrue. “Sativas and indicas have nothing to do with effects whatsoever,” says Justin Hutcherson, general manager at Cinder North. There’s a pervasive urban legend that sativas are energizing and indicas are relaxing — commonly remembered as “in da couch” for indica. Really, though, sativa and indica describe the physical appearance of the plant rather than the effects they produce. The main things that do impact the effect of specific strains are the terpene and cannabinoid profiles of the plant. THC and CBD, the two most widely known chemicals in cannabis, are both cannabinoids. THC is the one that gets you high, while CBD is the one you can buy in the alternative medicine section of your local grocery store. There are over 100 other known cannabinoids in the plant, though, and they’re all in play. Terpenes are the other category of chemicals in cannabis that affect your experience. Unlike cannabinoids, terpenes aren’t exclusive to cannabis. They’re major components of essential oils extracted from plants. Lavender essential oil, for example,

6

GREEN ZONE GUIDE

is widely used for its calming properties, which come from the presence of the terpene linalool. Linalool isn’t one of the more prevalent terpenes across strains, but you’ll notice strains that have a higher concentration of linalool often produce more relaxing effects. Take Scooby Snacks, a strain high in linalool. It’s a hybrid, which means it’s not pure indica or pure sativa, but is overwhelmingly on the “calming” side of the website Leafly’s calming-to-energizing spectrum.

Thankfully, there are people whose job is to know and understand all this stuff. They’re called budtenders. As is the case with cannabinoids, there are over 100 known terpenes in cannabis. One alone doesn’t dictate how a strain will make you feel. It’s a lot and it’s confusing. Thankfully, there are people whose job is to know and understand all this stuff. They’re called budtenders and you can find them at every dispensary around. They can guide you to the right strain even if you don’t know what you’re looking for. 

GEAR

ESSENTIAL TOOL Yes, you need a grinder BY WILL MAUPIN

I

f you don’t already have one, now’s the time to go get a grinder. Grinders make everything easier. From rolling joints to making edibles, fine and consistently ground flower is preferable to solid nugs. Think about every way there is to consume flower and there might not be a single one that isn’t made better by using a grinder. It’s not just the nice consistency that a grinder gives your cannabis that makes using one so great, though. For being a simple tool, grinders offer a ton of benefits. The cost of the grinder will pay for itself in no time at all by making you into a more efficient smoker. No more wasted chunks of black and stinky nug, burnt but not fully smoked, needing to be knocked out of your bowl piece. A fine grind will allow the flame from your lighter easier access to every bit of the cannabis you pack into a bowl. They also help you save your kief, the little crystals on your buds which have a habit of sticking to fingers, surfaces or anything they may come in contact with — except for the bud itself, where they belong. All grinders help contain your kief, but three- or four-piece grinders allow you to harvest the kief that otherwise would be lost. Some even come with a tiny scoop tool that fits inside the grinder to help transport those sticky little crystals to your pipe, joint or wherever you’re planning to consume them. Another great thing about grinders is more doesn’t necessarily mean more expensive. And they’re not that spendy to begin with. There are countless options out there with a kief screen that will only set you back between $10 and $20. Not a bad price for a product that will take your cannabis game to a considerably higher level. 

EDIBLES

THE GOLDEN AGE Weed can actually taste good

W

BY WILL MAUPIN

e’re living in the golden age of cannabis-infused edibles. Dispensaries carry everything from the traditional brownie to off-the-wall products like infused fruit syrups and bath bombs. Home chefs can throw together tasty cannabis treats like gummies, muffins or popsicles with ease (by the way those recipes, and more, are available on Inlander.com). Infused products aren’t just a way to make food a little more fun; they provide a completely different experience than one would find through smoking cannabis. Smoking gives you a short, sweet and immediate high. Edibles give you a long, strong high that comes on after 30 minutes or more and can last for sixplus hours. This means, for inexperienced consumers, edibles can seem more intimidating than a quick puff of a joint. If one puff isn’t enough, you’ll be able to tell right away and go back for another. With edibles, though, you won’t know how the dose will impact you for a while, and if you double up too quickly, you

might find yourself in over your head. “Low and slow is the golden rule. Start with a small dose, 5 to 10 milligrams is what is recommended and wait at least two to three hours to see how you feel,” Brandon St Germain, district leader at Cannabis & Glass explains. “The way some people metabolize THC through the liver is very different.” Don’t let this freak you out, though. Edibles are stronger, but also healthier than smoking cannabis. The lungs are great at delivering THC to your brain, but they’re not meant to be doing that. Inhaling smoke of any kind isn’t exactly good for you. With edibles, you’re sparing your lungs. These days, with a respiratory virus pandemic bringing society to a near halt, sparing your lungs every now and then isn’t too bad of an idea. “Edibles are a great way to get high,” St Germain says. “They’re also a lot easier to use. No extra paraphernalia to buy, no mess, no ash, no lighter, and most importantly for a lot of people, no smell.” 

No ash, no lighter, and most importantly for a lot of people, no smell.

t Cannabis & Glass, the goal is to provide customers with the best service and selection possible. That starts with having three convenient locations around the region — in Spokane, Spokane Valley and Liberty Lake — which are open 365 days a year. Nobody wants to wait in line, which is why Cannabis & Glass has the most registers in the region. More registers mean less of a bottleneck at checkout; your budtender can ring you up as soon as you’re ready to go. Even during peak shopping hours, traffic resembles the commute of your dreams rather than rush hour gridlock. Sometimes, though, you’re not looking to get in and out, and at Cannabis & Glass you’ll never feel rushed. That’s important when visiting a store with a massive selection. Between the three locations, you’ll find over 1,000 unique products and over 400 strains of flower and concentrate to choose from. Their knowledgeable and friendly budtenders are ready to guide you to the perfect

Cannabis & Glass is part of the cannabis community, of course, but also the Spokane community as well. Just like their customers. They take pride in what they do and who they serve, and it shows. Come see for yourself.

CULTURE

MIND YOUR MANNERS

Etiquette isn’t just for high society anymore BY WILL MAUPIN

I

n the first half of the 20th century, Americans looked to author and socialite Emily Post for the do’s and don’ts of proper manners. Why? She wrote the book on it, literally, with 1922’s Etiquette. She wasn’t concerned at all with cannabis. Her great-great-granddaughter Lizzie Post sure is, though, as evidenced by her 2019 work, Higher Etiquette. Yep, there’s an entire book on how to be a good consumer of cannabis. But there are also a few things that shouldn’t even need to be said about it — the simplest ways to be a decent human being while catching a buzz. First, don’t litter. This applies to everything, not just cannabis, but there’s a lot of trash produced by this industry so it’s worth repeating. Stop making stoners look bad and walk over to that trash can. Now that we’ve covered that, it’s time to know your audience. If you’re smoking alone, it’s no big deal to light up the entire bong bowl with one hit. But when you’re sharing with friends,

12

you don’t want to be a hog. That’s what the saying “puff, puff, pass” is all about. A joint needs to work its way around a circle for everyone to enjoy it. Same goes with a pipe, so leave some for the next guy. Speaking of the next guy, they’re going to put their mouth where yours just was. So keep it dry.

the key to being a good person while consuming cannabis might just be the same as being a good friend. Cannabis isn’t usually consumed with strangers. It’s something done with friends. So, the key to being a good person while consuming cannabis might just be the same as being a good friend. It’s not hard to have good manners, and it’s not any harder to have good manners with cannabis either — though it’s definitely more fun. 

TRAVEL

GREEN ON THE GO Guidelines for traveling with pot from the Inlander Cannabis Visitor’s Bureau desk BY QUINN WELSCH

T

raveling with marijuana is legal. Kind of. Sort of. Barely. Because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level and only legal at the state level, traveling with weed is kind of a legal mess. The good news is that so long as you are staying within Washington’s confines, you are pretty much good. Travel across state lines and things become more complicated, even to Oregon where marijuana is also fully legal. Let’s break it down.

BY AIR

The short answer (and the easiest) is no. Unless you have a medical license, you can’t board an airplane with marijuana. (Or, at least you aren’t supposed to.) This includes trips to other states where marijuana is legal, such as Oregon and California, and even between Washington cities, such as Seattle to Spokane. However, marijuana isn’t the Transportation Security Agency’s highest priority. If TSA agents discover marijuana in your luggage during the preflight screening in Washington, they simply hand it over to the local police department. In Spokane, you might just be asked to simply toss it.

BY LAND

As long as you aren’t high, it’s perfectly legal

14

GREEN ZONE GUIDE

to drive with marijuana in your car so long as it is either 1) in the trunk of the vehicle; 2) out of reach of the driving area of the vehicle; 3) or in an unopened container, according to state law. Just be careful at the border. Transporting marijuana from Washington to Idaho is illegal. Taking marijuana from Washington to Oregon is also technically illegal, despite the fact that the state has legalized recreational marijuana. Traveling to Canada? Also a big no. Our neighbors to the north fully legalized marijuana in 2018 across the entire country. However, traveling to and from Canada with any amount of pot remains illegal, according to the Canada Border Services Agency and the U.S. Border Patrol. 
