was a shop assistant and Tony’s girlfriend. Robyn rang Tony just before they went fishing and she went on the boat. She lived with her family on the Hamilton farm at Whenuakite. Merv Gregory, one of The Informer staff, was Robyn’s older brother. Darryl Amies was Tony’s cousin from Upper Hutt. He was 21 and came up with Kim for the holidays. Kim Smith’s family were the owners of the Whitianga motor camp. Kim was living in Wellington but had come home for New Year. Ken Bayliss lived at Kaimarama with his family. Patricia Latham was a shop assistant, the daughter of local Doctor Latham in Cook Drive. “Darryl and Kim had come up for New Years and Darryl badgered Tony to go fishing. He didn’t

t happened the night of 29 December, 1975 – one of the worst boating tragedies in New Zealand. Six young people died. Five of them came from the Whitianga area. All six were friends and were well known in the community. They had good families. The two local young men were members of the Mercury Bay Rugby team. Patricia and Robyn together, played in the Whitianga Netball team. They had many friends. When the boat went out, it was calm; the sea was not dangerous. Tony Davison was the skipper of the boat. He owned the boat and farmed with his family at Coroglen. Robyn Gregory Hamilton
really want to go because he was organizing a New Year’s party on the farm in our woolshed. No one knew that Robyn and Patricia were on the boat. They must have met in town or on the wharf and decided just to go with them. We had no idea. It was actually a shock to us that there were six of them on the boat because it was not really a big boat . “Tony would only ever allow four. Sometimes I would ask if I could go, but he would say, ‘I have four, already.’ His nature was to be careful with things. He would take the boat over to Topps Road and run it up and down the river to make sure everything was working properly. He did this before he left as had not used the boat for a while leading up to that day. Mum always made him a big tin of sandwiches and a couple of thermoses.

Work and personal life never a balance The ill-fated runabout, from which six people drowned, moored alongside the trawler Kutere at the Whitianga wharf.
“I was 13 about to turn 14. New Years Day was my birthday. Tony used to go out night fishing quite a bit, but he was usually home before midnight. This time he did ask me to milk the cows and paid me $5. He would go past Centre Island and out to Ohinoau Island. If a squall did come up, there was always a bit of shelter. We used to wrack our brains afterward to work out what happened He had a big motor on that boat. Dave Wall, who was the local policeman at the time, was quoted in the Auckland Star. ‘It is impossible to be sure how the accident happened, but obviously, the boat had flipped, the runabout was powered by a 120 hp outboard motor and this could have contributed to the accident. They were good kids from good homes – sensible kids. We all feel it. The whole town is shattered. ‘
“The bodies of Robyn, Kim and Ken were recovered on 31 December. Tonys’ body was found on 22 January up north on some rocks by the beach, but to this day, the bodies of Darryl Amies and Patricia Latham have never been recovered. Teams searched the sea for a very long time. The families clung on to hope. People sometimes want to blame someone. Sometimes that was the message of some of the articles in the paper. Somehow, the kids were to blame. It happened and it was the saddest day for so many people. It stunned this town. I light a candle on the night of 29 December every year and I pray for all the families involved. It is the best I can do. My message is to instill in people - “Never take the sea for granted. Don’t foget how how dangerous the sea can be. Don’t take risks.”
THE INFORMER: When I think about The Coromandel Informer in 2025, the local government elections loom large in the rear vision mirror. Not discounting the work done by the previous Council and boards, there is a new energy following the elections and a determination to learn from the past. Our magazine ‘Your Summer’ is a bright and positive achievement for our businesses and our Coromandel people. We had requests to do a Winter guide but as a team, we sensed there was no economic appetite for this. There is the felt need to promote The Coromandel Peninsula industries and attractions beyond the Peninsula both in hard copy and digitally. Sometimes we talk too much to ourselves. I am proud of the ‘Your Summer’ magazine and the fact that at this point 3,000 have been distributed in Auckland with 2,000 to go. My team of friends has made that possible. Some
of them have a bach here – all of them think the Coromandel Peninsula is a wonderful place to stay and live. What is best about The Informer is that I think we are helping build a sense of community – working to include every part of our society. Others are too and many businesses strive tirelessly to be successful and so support the growth and well-being of the Coromandel. It is not a time to play it safe or to be risk averse. Our society and our infrastructure have become too risk averse and protective. We cannot tire of ‘pushing the envelope – making a difference, going the extra mile’. That spirit is the essence of a meaningful life. I might be the oldest editor around, but my energy and passion are not old. PERSONALLY: It has been a gut-wrenching year, losing Stan. I still find it
hard to believe his life here is no more. I am full of thankfulness for all the support and care received from medical professionals, generous, efficient volunteers, and our good friends. Communally, we miss him. Our son Walker whose journey post-covid vaccine, many of you have followed, has not improved physically this last year. His ability to walk is just not there yet. However, his walking frame makes movement possible. His mind and upper body are alert and functioning very well. We are hopeful of further progress and there will be some future operations. At this time, I can help best by supporting him and his family. Every day I meet others who suffer physically or emotionally and who are grieving, but who live well With the help of others, I intend to live well and commit to this paper, enabling you to live well. CORO CLASSIC – SATURDAY, 4 JANUARY Coro Classic is Matarangi’s outstanding cert festival ran very smoothly. The young adult event. BIG SCRUB FIRE AT KUAOTUNU
A large scrub fire broke out on Black Jack Road in Kūaotunu on Saturday, 11 January, and was not able to be contained by the end of the day due to lack of accessibility to the fire and the prevailing winds sending it up the hillsides very quickly. Black Jack Road was closed to the public all day on Sunday to enable firefghters to work. A pilot vehicle was there for residents and emergency access. It is not known how the fire started at this stage but it appears to have started very close to the edge of the road. An investigation will take place to determine the cause.
VISITORS FLOCK BACK TO MAUTOHE CATHEDRAL COVE
WHITIANGA’S GREAT SUMMER CONCERT
Hundreds of people a day are visiting Mautohe Cathedral Cove’s famous beach following the reinstatement of walking access to the popular Coromandel location. In December, DOC reopened the main walking track to Mautohe Cathedral Cove after an extended closure due to damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, and concerns about visitor safety at a site with known risks. Funding from the International

BUILDING A SAFER NEW BRIDGE OVER THE ONETAI STREAM
Work gets underway onsite next week to prepare for the replacement of the 48-year-old Onetai Stream Bridge north of Paeroa on State Highway 26. A wider, stronger bridge will make this route on the eastern side of the Waihou River safer and more resilient.

Road users on SH26 between Paeroa and Kōpū will see (NZTA) contractors on site from Tuesday 28 January to begin work. There will be lane closures for the first 2 weeks, and then a full road closure for up to 4 weeks from Monday 10 February.

LOOKING BACK ON 2025 – JANUARY/FEBRUARY OCEANA WALKWAY BLOCKED TO WALKERS Part of one of Tairua’ stunning walking tracks has been closed by Thames Coromandel District Council. The Oceana Walkway was created as part of TCDC consents for the Oceana development, which was given the go ahead in 1996. It goes from steep steps at the south end of Ocean Beach, across the breath-taking vista of ocean and offshore islands, and finishes at the top of Oceana Heights.
The council recently put up signs saying ‘PRIVATE PROPERTY – NO PUBLIC ACCESS – ENTRY CONSTITUTES TRESPASS’ on part of the walkway. The Coromandel Informer understands this follows discussions between a non-resident homeowner and the council. The part of the walkway that has been closed to the public is on private land with an easement vested in Council.

On Tuesday, 25 February, Supervalue Pauanui re-opened as the latest store to undergo a refresh and become a FreshChoice. The store is now the 64th FreshChoice supermarket in the country and joins a growing network of locally owned and operated grocery stores. The new FreshChoice Pauanui is independently owned and operated by Ravi Vanisa and Bhavika Rathod, who have strong ties to the local community.

BY JANICE MALLOY A Whitianga fisher has received an award for motivating recreational fishers to fish in a ‘seabird smart’ way. John Ellwood of Marine Adventures is an important and influential voice promoting the need to protect seabirds from becoming hooked while out fishing. The Seabird Smart Award John has received is an initiative of the Southern Seabirds Trust, which aims to publicise com-
mercial and recreational fishers who have shown outstanding leadership and commitment to looking after New Zealand seabirds. Her Excellency the Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro presented the award to John on Wednesday, 12 February, at Government House, Auckland. John Ellwood says “Over the last forty years I’ve developed a huge respect for the seabirds we see around our boat. Much like us, they are just after a feed for their family.”
KICKDOWN FESTIVAL 2025
OPTIMISTIC START TO 2025 AT MERCURY BAY AREA SCHOOL
Held over the extended Waitangi Day weekend, the Kickdown Festival near Whangamata was music on steroids and much more. The crowd could enjoy freestyle motorbike shows, road bike and adventure bike competitions along with one of the best riding routes in the Southern Hemisphere. Plenty more for bikes enthusiasts with FMX Displays, a Hill Climb and a popular Legends ride. But it wasn’t all about bikes as there were trade displays, an open fire Meat Cook, a display by the NZ Combat School, and Tattoo artists for those who wanted an enduring souvenir. Thousands came, many of them for the three days but the peak

Kickdown is the largest motorcycle festival in the North Island of New Zealand. It is based at Joe’s Farm, just 10 minutes north of the popular surfside town of Whangamata. Competitions in the extreme sport of freestyle motorbikes were quite the thing at Kickdown – very popular with riders performing stunts, tricks, flying high, hardly holding on - bikes and riders doing somersaults.

LOOKING BACK ON 2025 – FEBRUARY/MARCH WORLD’S LARGEST BILLFISH TOURNAMENT There are 460 boats registered for this Tournament with entries being closed off soon after the 2024 tournament due to so many desiring to be part of the famous Kuboto Billfish Classic Tournament. The organisation of this huge undertaking is different from previous years. Though still directed by local fisher and businessman, Tom Maxwell, it is essentially a private tournament – no longer run by a New Zealand Sports Fishing Council affiliated club. The Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club will be providing support, assistance and people power but not involved in its organisation or promotion. The events on land associated with the tournament will be held at the Whitianga Hotel.

TWO TIGER MOTHS FLY OVER TO MARK 100 YEARS Two Tiger Moth aircraft flew over the Coromandel to mark the 100 years of the flying of Gypsy Moths last Sunday commencing at 3.00pm. The celebrations took place all around the globe. The national celebration took place at Ardmore last Saturday but the Coromandel Peninsula had their celebration fly over on Sunday followed by a shared meal and drinks for local pilots, members of the Mercury Bay Aeroclub and friends and family out at the Whitianga airport. The 100 years marks the making of the Gypsy Moth a DH 60, a predecessor to the Tiger Moth. The Gypsy Moth was a DH 60 – that was the plane. There is one of these DH 60s in New Zealand owned by a

TE AROHA PAEROA SEARCH AND RESCUE WIN PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

Local members of the Te Aroha Paeroa Search and Rescue (TAPSAR) team have been recognised for their outstanding service, winning the New Zealand Land Search and Rescue National Supreme Award for Outstanding Operation. This prestigious award acknowledges the exceptional efforts of the team in a March 2024 rescue mission that saw them overcome challenging conditions to save an injured hunter. The TAPSAR team, which includes both seasoned volunteers with over 15 years of service and newer recruits, is composed of dedicated individuals from diverse backgrounds across the Matamata-Piako district, Paeroa, and Hamilton. Despite their name, the team’s primary operational reach extends beyond Te Aroha and Paeroa, covering much of the Kaimai region, including Matamata’s popular Wairere Falls and when required throughout the greater Waikato region.
This year marked the 25th Anniversary of Repco Beach Hop, a monumental milestone in the event’s history. A special tribute was paid to the founder, Noddy Watts, whose tireless work and vision transformed Beach Hop from a modest gathering into a world-renowned festival. His passion for classic cars and rock ‘n’ roll did not just create an event; it ignited a movement that celebrates vintage culture, nostalgia, and community spirit. His influence is felt far and wide, and Beach Hop has become a symbol of connection – uniting people from all walks of life. The festivities were as vibrant, filled with celebrations, competitions, and surprises, all topped off by an unforgettable tribute to Noddy for his remarkable contribution to New Zealand’s cultural landscape.
New Zealand Offshore Powerboat Racing roared through its final round for the 2025 season and Espresso Engineers (pictured above), powering through the waters of Mercury Bay, was technically declared the overall winner across all six rounds of the Superboat Class for 2025. “Our powerboat racing organisation loves coming to Whitianga”, said John Redwood, Race Officer for the day. “It is such a good circuit, large areas of calm but also some big holes in the swells. The racing is not just about speed but also about boat handling skills. This is a very
good circuit and with the stunning geographical location, we have a clear view of all our boats.” “Each boat has its own GPS sensor which beams the information up to the satellite. This is all collected by a person in the South Island and a minute after the races finish, we have all the timing information from every boat.” The classes competing over this last weekend were Sports 80km/hr class, (Equal first Superstitious and Fury); 140 class (Winner – Goldship); 200 class (Winner – Blue Pill); 300 class (Winner – Equaliser), and the Superboat class.

LOOKING BACK ON 2025 – APRIL A TASTE OF MATARANGI FANTASTIC 10TH ANNIVERSAY It was a sublime A Taste of Matarangi event this last Saturday on the Village Green in Matarangi. It was the festival’s tenth birthday and things were a little precarious with the downpour day on the Friday before. However, Saturday gave the Village green a wonderful bathing of sunlight for almost the entire day to mark this special tenth year. The rain dampened nothing. That relaxed atmosphere – layback but also exuberant – and marks the A Taste of Matarangi, was there in big dollops.

A heartfelt ‘Thank You’ says ‘The Lost Spring’ after hosting the Miss Universe New Zealand pageant at their most magnificent venue. What an amazing experience it was to attend the lunch for the Miss Universe NZ 2025 at our beautiful Pacifica Geothermal Village centre, The Lost Spring! It was the first Miss Universe held since Covid, and for this national level first stage of the pageant, it was quite the draw. New Zealand contestants enjoy a more open entry threshold policy for beauty pageants. There is no age limit.
STANLEY JAMES STEWART – NO MORE OF HIS ‘STUFF’
Stan and I heard on 21 January 2025, that his fibrosis of the lungs and lung cancer were terminal – Stage Four and nothing could be done. He fought it and kept challenging the medical community for solutions. They did their best and we did ours. The news had been a shock to us. He passed away on 12 April. Stan was served very well by medical science and by the people who bring the science through their personal care and dedication. We could not have asked for more help and expertise from cancer support and the hospice volunteeers who helped Pauline tenderly care for him in those last 3 weeks. He is sorely missed.

PREFERRED OPTION DECIDED – WHITIANGA ESPLANADE However not all stages were approved. Last Wednesday 7 May, the Mercury Bay Community Board met and pushed for Stages One and Two to be approved as well as Stage Three and these were presented by Councillor Deli Connell. It was decided Stage Four was to be postponed and Stage Five which includes ‘substantive construction’ was to be considered for further public input in 1927 Long term Plan. The project has been underway with consultants and selected community meetings for many years. There is a great deal of inter-
est in this large undertaking in a key tourism activity area. There is some awareness that it is still piecemeal and does not cater for future tourism demands and over caters on boat trailer space. The current budget of $16.5 million has grown from the early days of just a little over $7million but there is confidence that the stages 1, 2 and 3 can be accommodated by existing budgets and the figure of $16.5m will cover the ‘substantive construction’ of Stage 5. There is really no detail yet on how the usage will help pay for this development.

RUN FEST... FUN & FAST – G.J. GARDNER HOMES – SATURDAY, 31 MAY Whether you were walking briskly or puffing your lungs out getting to the finishing line, this coastal running festival had adventure endurance, stunning scenery, great people to be with and a community to cheer you when you reached the finish. The central base was Buffalo Beach Reserve but most runners get to ride on the ferry to Ferry Landing and return across the estuary as part of their race. For the non-runners or walkers, it was a great day out on a beautiful beach front, watching the runners come in. The full range of speedster to dawdlers, all sizes, shapes and ages, enjoyed Run Fest 2025 – hundreds of them, though not as many as last year.

he opening night of Disney’s musical theatre production Aladdin Junior was a dazzling success. It was produced by Mercury Bay Performing Arts in partnership with the Coromind Magazine. This was the Mercury Bay Performing Arts debut performance and is a credit to all who are involved. The main characters are expertly cast and performed true to character: Isabella White as the charismatic Aladdin, Olivia Graham as the enigmatic Genie, and Zhyrra Alexie Honrada as the beautiful but strong-willed Princess Jasmine. Connor Maclean played the scheming villain Jafar and his sidekick Lago was played by Tahlia Osborne. There are many others who have played their parts so well, and it is the full cast of children and youth – of varying ages – having fun and pouring everything into their performances that make this show such a success.

Selling homes in December 2025 - A strong finish a place we call
Looking Ahead: Stock levels across the Coromandel remain high, continuing to underpin stability and temper any sharp price growth despite the lift in sales volumes. The big question economists are now asking is how long this will last, before we see upward price growth. For now, the outlook for 2026 is a positive one.
As we head into the final week of the year, I’d like to wish all readers a very Merry Christmas and a safe, relaxing holiday period. Almost Four Years on from the Market Peak: It’s hard to believe, it’s now four years since the much-talked-about peak of the market. What followed was a clear downward correction, then a prolonged period of stability. While many homeowners understandably still anchor expectations to the post-Covid boom, the data tells a clear story. In reality, there was only a brief 12-month period in history where values sat above today’s levels. The price index graph highlights just how much of an anomaly that Covid boom was, and how stable the market has been in recent times, with prices largely tracking sideways throughout 2025. Confidence Returns: The most encouraging trend through 2025, and in particular the latter part of the year, has been the return of buyer confidence. As purchasers have become more comfortable making decisions again, sales volumes have surged through the final quarter, returning to more normalised levels. Overall, transaction volumes in TCDC were up more than 14% year on year to the end of November. Interest Rates Providing Support: 2025 also saw a further six reductions in the Official Cash Rate, bringing the total to eight drops since the July 2024 peak. With the main banks now signalling interest rates are relatively stable and near the bottom of the cycle, the impact is finally being felt. Lower borrowing costs are acting as a genuine stimulus, helping unlock demand that had been sitting on the sidelines. It’s been particularly pleasing to see a strong return of first-home buyers. Like many buyer groups, they’ve responded positively to more affordable lending, good choice in the market, and stable pricing.

F Mr Ross Cooper of Waihi was awarded a Kings Service Medal for services to Rugby in the Kings Birthday Honours list. Ross’ contributions to rugby are well documented and he has made significant contributions to rugby at all levels across this nation for more than 50 years.
rom 1 July 2026, Thames-Coromandel District Council will transition to a capital value-based rating system. This means rates will be calculated on the total value of a property — including both land and improvements — rather than land value alone. The decision was made at the Council’s recent meeting following a formal consultation process. Councillors considered three options: OPTION 1: Retain the existing land value system;
OPTION 2: Shift to capital value, with the Uniform Annual General Charge (UAGC) becoming a
fixed percentage of the general rate.
OPTION 3: As above, with changes to targeted rates for rubbish/recycling and roading/building control to better align charges with the services they fund. A total of 650 submissions were received during the March–April consultation period, representing around 2% of all ratepayers. Over half (56%) supported retaining the current system, while 40% preferred either of the capital value-based options. Submissions often focused on personal financial impacts, with many citing fairness, equity, and affordability. Some respondents expressed concerns that one part of the district would end up subsi-
dising another part in a shift to capital value. Respondents from both the east and west sides of the district expressed this contention. Some comments also reflected the misconception that a shift to capital value was primarily intended to increase Council’s rates revenue – which it will
not. There was robust debate amongst councillors about the principles of fairness, affordability and equity, and to what extent Councillors should rigorously be guided by the feedback numbers as opposed to considering that feedback alongside those principles.
BATTLING DISAPPEARING OPTIONS The Mercury Bay Boating Club is facing a true nautical nightmare. Their shoreline is literally vanishing, and The Informer had a conversation with Club Commodore, Philip Hart, to find out how the Club was progressing with its battle to locate their home. Where the Boat Club building once sat, with a flagpole, con-
crete plinth and strong deck, now there is ocean at high tide. Once they could set up a marquee, but that land is now submerged, due to the encroaching sea. Commodore Philip Hart provided a summary of the club’s options, emphasizing a resilient, albeit humorous, outlook for the future.
“We can sail without a building,” he chuckled, highlighting their determination to keep the spirit of sailing alive despite the encroaching tides and disappointments regarding options. The Club is an important community asset providing sailing programs of all levels and a Club House facility that is used by other community groups.

A new public Coromandel multi-sports facility has been made possible thanks to the community-minded efforts of Cooks Beach Tennis Club and Thames-Coromandel District Council. The coastal community now boasts an outdoor sports complex catering for tennis, pickleball, netball and basketball after a $125,000 upgrade to the club’s original tennis courts. Together, our Council and the club worked on the upgrade with club members and carried out extensive community engagement to establish local needs and aspirations for the facility.

DAVE CREATES ONE OF NZ’S LARGEST MURALS
Situated at South Highway West, Whitianga, on the Sunz Seafood building, it is longer than a large blue whale (and then some) and taller than four of basketballer Steven Adams (ok with his arms down!). Dave Fowell used his painting experience of colour and perspective on small canvas and enlarged it forty times! Dave’s mate, Herb has a fish factory, and he commissioned Dave to paint a mural on the outside wall of
the factory. “I told him I could design and paint a large canvas but had never painted anything longer than three metres,” says Dave. “I added, he would have to find someone else to complete the project but that I could help with a design.” However, when Dave had finished the design, he had become so invested in it that he couldn’t let it go. “I couldn’t give up my baby to another painter.”

This is the tenor of the Mercury Bay Lions Club, a group of women who are inspired to serve their community and they enjoy it not as a duty but as a priority. These women also know how to have a good time and that is just what they did when enjoying a meal as part of their AGM at Grace O’Malleys recently. Mercury Bay is women only due to its charter but both clubs work together on all the big community events and fundraising projects to improve life for the people of Mercury Bay and beyond.

ning at Papamoa Surf club last weekend and take great pride in receiving this award. 16 year old Meg Harper was also nominated for U19 Lifeguard of the Year and made it through to be a finalist.
It is with deep regret that we share with our community and beyond the passing of our much-loved brother, Grassy (Peter) Mangin. To know Grassy was to know loyalty, humour, and heart. On Friday night, 29 August, we lost not just a firefighter of 50 years, but a brother, a mentor, and for many of us, family. His boots may be empty, but the space he filled in our lives never will be. Grassy dedicated more than 50 years of his life to serving as a volunteer firefighter fifty years of showing up, rain or shine, sirens or silence, giving his time and his heart to the job and the people who stood beside him. A lifetime of courage, commitment, and stories

A pod of orcas was seen in Mercury Bay last Wednesday, 3rd September and attracted a lot of attention. They were close to Buffalo Beach and travelled down the estuary looking for a meal of stringray. Over 10 string rays sought refuge in the still, clear waters under the wharf.

HATO HONE ST JOHN OPERATIONS AT NEW WAIHI STATION BEGIN
So many in New Zealand don’t know this man. He is Sir Keith Park and a twopoint-three-metre bronze statue of his likeness as a pilot and airman, was unveiled at Thames Airfield on Sunday before a crowd of 600 people. Thames is Sir Keith’s hometown. This man’s life, his character and actions were the central focus of the commemorations of the Battle of Britain in the open air under very chilly skies for local people and many visiting dignitaries on Sunday, 14 September. The bronze sculpture was a huge feat in itself with the funds being raised locally by the small team led by Geoff and also individuals throughout New Zealand contributed. Internationally renowned sculptor Joanne Sullivan worked for over three years on Sir Keith’s bronze sculpture, being interrupted by Covid for a time.
Waihī residents will now see ambulance crews and Community Health volunteers working out of the newly built St John Waihi (Hato Hone ki Waihīhī) ambulance station, following a blessing of the property. In the early hours of 23 August, Hato Hone St John
employees, volunteers and local iwi me te whānau whānui came together at 21 Johnston Street to mark the operational opening of Waihī station – ahead of a community opening planned for November. The new facility was supported by generous donations
from the Waihī community and the general public across New Zealand. Most recently, funds were raised during Hato Hone St John’s 2024 and 2025 “Light the Way” Annual Appeal and a “111 Challenge” that saw donors commit to an activity, such as cycling 111 kms or baking 111 cupcakes.

LOOKING BACK ON 2025 – SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER PARTIAL SOLAR ECLIPSE We will all be treated to a partial eclipse of the Sun next Monday, September 22. These events can only occur at a Full Moon and even then only when the Moon and Sun exactly line up so are quite rare. While a partial eclipse may not be quite as stunning as a total solar eclipse it is nevertheless is an unusual sight not everyone gets to see. Kiwis will not have a chance to see another one until July 2028 and after that in 2032.
MANAWA KAI HEARTFOOD KITCHEN: MORE THAN JUST A MEAL Each week in Whitianga, over 200 free nourishing meals are prepared and shared through Manawa Kai Heartfood Kitchen, an initiative of the Mercury Bay Community Support Trust. The summer launching of this very popular ferry service is on Friday, 24 October just before just in time for Labour weekend. The service will initially operate an express Friday evening service, as well as Saturday and Sunday departures with plans to increase the schedule with demand. The journey will take just over two hours and passengers can relax and enjoy the scenic cruise through the eastern
Hauraki Gulf onboard Explore’s fleet of premium vessels. “The community has been looking for the ferry service from Auckland to be re-instated for several years now because it’s such an important part of the Coromandel’s hospitality offering. It’s been great to work with Explore Group and the Coromandel-Colville Business Association to bring back the ferry connection.”

NEW ZEALAND’S RAREST STAMP SOLD IN RECORD AUCTION The unique, legendary Lake Taupo Invert Stamp with a Lake Taupo scene printed upside down, sold today for a world record $263,250 for a New Zealand stamp. It sold in Mowbray Collectables’ stamp and coin auctions in Wellington. The vendor is New Zealand Post who purchased the stamp from Mowbrays for $125,000 in 1998. The sale was part of a two-day sale of stamps, coins, medals and banknotes and was a record for Mowbrays with total sales of $1,634,000.

It symbolises the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Monday 20 October was Diwali. It is observed with special lights and lighting, home decorations and flags, fireworks, puja (prayers), gifts, festive food, sweets, and families being together.
Nee and Praveena, who manage the restaurant at Mercury Bay Club, opened their home and invited other Indian and Hindu friends as well as their kiwi friends, to a Diwali evening of colour, lots of great food and a time of making new friends. I observed that the kiwi friends were both long time residents in Mercury Bay and those who had only just arrive. Some were travelling through and had been invited. We need more of this kind of spirit.

Pauanui played host to the third Pauanui Pink Walk, a fun family event raising valuable funds for Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. Last Saturday, 27 September. The pink theme started taking shape on Friday with pink balloon garlands strung up throughout the village. Proceeds from the event will be donated to Breast Cancer Foundation NZ. The amount raised is yet to be confirmed as the community involvement saw many businesses running their own ‘sub fundraising’. The final amount will be advised once everything is collated.

Citycare Water, New Zealand’s leading water care and maintenance company, has been appointed by Thames-Coromandel District Council to manage the region’s drinking water, wastewater and stormwater networks. The contract means they will manage approximately 20,000 kilometres of water networks across Aotearoa and service around 25% of Kiwi households. Citycare Water will establish five regional offices throughout the region. Although the contract is scheduled to commence in April 2026, they are keen to engage with local communities next week, offering an oppor-
tunity to learn more about who they are and what they do, as well as discuss potential employment opportunities. As of April 2026, Citycare Water will look after water infrastructure that keeps our communities ticking: the drinking water that flows from our taps, the wastewater that’s safely taken away, and the stormwater that channels heavy rain out to sea before it can flood our homes and roads. As a first word I want to say thank you. Thank you to all those who voted. I’m delighted to be your mayor. I am determined to deliver a change to what we as a Council deliver for the benefit of all our residents and ratepayers. As I lead our Council, my job is to unite, motivate, and focus to deliver outcomes over the next three years. This is a new beginning for the Thames-Coromandel District Council and I’d like to outline where we
A passionate investigator, a champion for victims, and the man who expanded New Zealand’s vocabulary of crime and criminals – former Detective Inspector Graham Bell, QSM, was a legend. Bell died in Hospice Waikato on Tuesday, 7 October aged 78, after a battle with cancer, fought with characteristic tenacity. In his retirement, Graham lived with his wife Joyce in Whitianga. He was active in the Mercury Bay Fishing Club
and an enthusiast for classic cars along with the locals in the American Muscle, Street and Custom Car Club. After the funeral, it was Graham’s wish for his hearse to be a classic dodge open top ute. Though many criminals had cause to regret crossing his path, it was after retirement that Bell had his biggest impact on the country as a whole. He teamed up with production company, Screentime, to develop a true-crime television series which became
Police Ten 7, fronting it from 2002 to 2014. The programme helped solve crime and shone a light on the everyday work of police – and Bell attained “national treasure” status with his colourful descriptions of the “gutless goons”, “ratbags”, “lowlifes”, “scums” and “mongrels” making life a misery for others. Graham Bell saw Police Ten 7 as a way to both solve crime and demystify police and policing for a wide audience.

Our Mayor and our Council and our Community Board members have been sworn in. As is the practice and rule in New Zealand, each one taking office individually makes a statutory declaration rather than an oath when sworn in. The wording for this declaration is outlined in the Local Government Act 2002. Two versions of the declaration are provided, requiring the Mayor and the Councillors and Community Board members to declare that they will faithfully and impartially execute their duties and powers in the best interests of the region or district. An affirmation has the same legal standing as an oath, with oaths typically concluding with “So
help me God”. Peter Revell spoke of the confidence he has in his team of Councillors, ‘their experience, their capability and talent’. “My hope is we are working together for the common good. We are digging in with a strong belief in the people we serve, remembering why we stood and why we have been chosen,” said Peter. “I am fully aware of the job ahead of me.” We have youthfulness on our Council and on Community Boards. That’s great and needed – Kate James, Cole McDowell. We have new people who aren’t that young but they have experience and credentials in public life and
The Tenth Anniversary of Thames’ annual Steampunk event always promised to be spectacular, and so it was. Four days of paid events and public parades capped off a strenuous year of organisation for the local committee. Over the four days of the event, there was never a dull moment, no excuse to look away. Organiser Paula Munro says, “This being the tenth anniversary of Steampunk The Thames, the organising committee went all-out to try and make sure this

GOODWILL BLOOMS FOR GARDEN RAMBLE WITH FUNDS FOR CANCER LODGE The Mercury Bay and Whitianga Lions Clubs have successfully concluded their “See How We Bloom” Garden Ramble, a charity fundraiser that opened 19 spectacular private gardens across the Whitianga area to the public over the weekend of November 15-16. Garden enthusiasts admired vibrant flower displays, productive citrus and vegetable gardens, and an abundance of interesting plants. Each garden revealed its own unique personality, with creative visual elements and quirky ornaments adding unexpected touches of whimsy throughout the tour. The event successfully raised over $14,000 for the Lions Cancer Lodge
in Hamilton – a vital facility providing accommodation for cancer patients and their families travelling to Hamilton city for treatment. “This wasn’t just a blooming day out,” organisers noted. “it was a meaningful way for the community to come together in support of those facing one of life’s greatest challenges.” The success of the Garden Ramble required numerous volunteers working alongside the dedicated organisers from both Lions Clubs. The clubs have expressed their gratitude to all volunteers, garden owners, and business sponsors whose hard work and generosity made the event possible.
It is made of carbon fibre and PVC foam and coated with a metallic paint. It has been prepared in Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula for an enormous journey - to pedal around the world.
This very challenging project has taken several years to get to this point. The pedal boat to go around the world is just about ready. The designer is well-known marine vehicle designer, Craig Loomes of Lomocean. It has been built by Brian Harkin of Harkin Boat Works Ltd. Today this magnificent ‘boat’ was towed by truck to bathe in the water
for the very first time. The person who has set his sights on pedalling around the world and now has the region buzzing is Paul Spencer. This man is a world citizen of remarkable stamina, with a quiet spirit and enduring patience. It is his dream to pedal this boat around the world, and he is about to get going.
SEAFOOD FESTIVAL LAUNCHES THE SUMMER SEASON
The Seafood Festival took place on Saturday, 8 November at the Whitianga Hotel and Salt Bar & Restaurant combined into one festival space, with the public able to move freely between the various spaces that made up the festival site.
Festival goers could wander from the hotel and garden bar to Salt Restaurant as they wished, there being music, food and refreshments in both areas. Overall this festival was a great success with tickets sold out long before the event.
The first Tuesday of November re-kindles our enthusiasm for horse racing throughout New Zealand and for the Coromandel Peninsula this is no exception. Various establishments stage events to host race goers and for locals, the clubs/pubs such as the Mercury Bay Club, Whitianga Hotel, Smitty’s Bar & Grill, Stoked Restaurant to name a few, went to great effort with stunning decorations and raffles. Guests presented themselves with varying degrees of style, vying for the best dressed awards as can be seen by the accompanying picture.
Live music was laid on for all to enjoy and the TAB was kept pumping at every available venue. A great day for all at the Club.

Many know the story of the Mercury Bay Boating Club, but some of our readers do not. It’s been up on stilts and supported by scaffolding for three years. Now a decision must be made about the future of the Clubhouse so that the Boating Club can get on with its sailing future. Phil Hart has reported in his AGM minutes that the meeting made a decision to say goodbye to the building. They have tried ‘everything’ they can, at the expense of focussing on sailing.

WATER TREATMENT PLANT – A MILESTONE FOR HAHEI Hahei now has access to safe and reliable water with less chance of water use restrictions during summer’s visitor surge. The opening of the Hahei water treatment plant on Wednesday, 10 December was an infrastructure milestone for the local community. Deputy Mayor John Grant officiated at the event on Pa Road, unveiling a plaque to the plant that has been designed to comply with the Drinking Water Compliance Rules now and into the future. “Today we are strengthening TCDC’s commitment to providing safe and affordable drinking water for the communities we serve,” said Deputy Mayor Grant.

The Buffalo Beach Club will become known as the BBC but it will never be The British Broadcasting Company. This wonderful new investment on Whitianga’s Esplanade along the Beachfront is all set to be a bar and café offering customers something quite different from what you will
normally get at a bar or restaurant. The location is pristine, the views glorious and open. BBC is opening soon. There are a few presenting difficulties with some objections to the licence request. I believe our TCDC will be most expeditious in enabling this to be sorted out.
Fire and Emergency New Zealand is enforcing a ban on fireworks in the Waikato’s Coromandel Zone. The ban, which was now in place, would be until Friday, January 30. This ban, which is possible under Section 52 of the Fire and Emergency New Zealand
Act, prohibited the private use of fireworks. Approved public displays would go ahead. Fire and Emergency NZ Waikato district manager Daryl Trim said the fire risk across the zone was high. “We’ve had consistently warm and windy days which has dried out the vegetation.

This last weekend the Mercury Bay Boating Club ran the Double Trouble Catamaran Regatta for the seventh consecutive year. It was terrific! It’s also ironic with the tragedy of our Boating Clubhouse. Two classes attended – double handed
Hobie Cats and single-handed A-Class, the A Class squad just coming off of their World Championships at the Milford Cruising Club. The competitors travelled from Auckland and Rotorua as well team members from our home club MBBC.
