It’s not a submarine. It’s not a plane.

It’s not a torpedo. It’s a pedal boat.

It is made of carbon fibre and PVC foam and coated with a metallic paint. It has been prepared in Whitianga on the Coromandel Peninsula for an enormous journey - to pedal around the world.

T

his very challenging project has taken several years to get to this point. The pedal boat to go around the world is just about ready. The designer is well-known marine vehicle designer, Craig Loomes of Lomocean. It has been built by Brian Harkin of Harkin Boat Works Ltd. Today this magnificent ‘boat’ was towed by truck to bathe in the water for the very first time. The person who has set his sights on pedalling around the world and now has the region buzzing is Paul Spencer.

Paul Spencer has done the Tour D’Afrique, a bike race across Africa. He has done the Trans Am, a bike race across USA. The day before he finalized his current project, he took a leisurely ninehour bike ride around the Coromandel Peninsula.

This man is a world citizen of remarkable stamina, with a quiet spirit and enduring patience. It is his dream to pedal this boat around the world, and he is about to get going.

“The design, the materials, the

technology are not startingly new,” says Paul. This has simply never been done before. Legs are stronger than arms.”

“It is a little like the America’s Cup technology. Team New Zealand experimented and applied the legs versus arms technology and the legs won,” says Brian Harkin.

“I have always believed that an ocean-going pedal boat would be better than a rowboat.” says Paul.

“Nobody has ever thought about

the complete system required and developed it. I am intent on showing the power of what a person can do using technology that enhances and helps the human body’s ability.”

Only one person has achieved human powered world circumnavigation and that was with rowing and cycling. His name was Erden Eruc and his journey took 5 years and 11 days. His feat was officially recognised by the Guinness World Records. He began on

“I intend to take three years,” says Paul. “My route is quite different. Erden had more time on the ocean and cycled when it was necessary. He was a rower. I will have less time on the ocean and more time cycling. I am a cycler first and a pedaller, second. The distance on the ocean will be 12,500 miles and the rest will be land travel – a total of 45,000 miles.”

The gas giants Saturn and Jupiter are both

on show this week. Slightly yellowish Saturn is visible all night and followed across the sky well after midnight by much brighter Jupiter. The Moon can help us find Jupiter this week. Mars and Mercury have a meeting this Thursday but brighter Mercury is rapidly approaching the Sun so is very low in the western dusk sky, getting noticeably lower each night. Planets do not twinkle like stars which can help us locate them.

There will be some International Space Station (ISS) passes to enjoy this week but, as usual, timings may change especially towards the end of the week if it has to be moved to avoid space junk. Always best to check the website heavens-above.com for updated timings.

fastest cycle across USA from Canada to Mexico and then Los Angeles to New York. This is not a new dream or new venture. It has been bubbling and logically gathering life for 15 years with Paul using whatever funds he could earn into the conception and planning of this awesome undertaking.

“My brother Matthew helped me get ready for the USA cycle and set up the website He came up with “Yes, he’s mad!’ as the title of the website. That title works well in New Zealand and Australia, but the Americans thought it meant I am angry and aggressive, so we are not continuing that.” I thought to myself – ‘that’s a great title’.

Paul presented me with a water bottle. It has the world pedal journey he will take outlined on a map of the world. As well as using it, I am going to treasure that water bottle.

This journey is a lot further

than it needs to be, for two reasons, and Paul explained. The first is he has planned less miles on the water, but the land masses close to the water are generally north, and cold – Alaska and Russia.

There are no roads either side of Russia and Alaska. It will be better to stay near the equator and do more miles in warmer water and generally calmer waters, making it a longer journey.

The second reason is “I can pedal while I eat or work on my computer. If you are using human power to row, you cannot do that.

“Finding the right boat to redesign was a big struggle. I was thinking about building something from scratch but I had heard about, and also seen online, a rowboat which had the kind of base I was thinking about. It was narrower than this but did not

have ‘trainer wheels’ or sponsons.

It had been designed by Craig Loomes – that’s how we made contact.

I called Craig about whether he could design and build a similar one. What was such good news is that Craig told me this one boat was for sale. This was Christmas 2018. Craig took me to see the boat. The owner had actually built a lot of it himself. He had people interested but he wanted the boat to do something cool and once he

knew what I was planning, it was a done deal.

Since then, it has been in Brian Harkin’s boat construction shed being intricately prepared for the full weight of three years of ocean journey.

Paul is going to be in Whitianga for a month before he gets going and will be testing his pedal boat every day.

As for the name for this human-powered boat? We don’t know yet.

Viewpoint from professional fishers In support of professional working fishers operating in the local Mercury Bay waters and a reply to Legasea’s biased messaging.

the deeper dwelling fish that are available in our local waters, fish that don’t also readily take a bait on a line. Common inshore species like Tarakihi, Trevally, Warehou and John Dory would become hard to find in the fish shop and reduce this country’s $2.2 billion in seafood earnings. (Up to March 2025)

W

orking fishers are definitely concerned and disappointed about the recent decision to ban mobile bottom-contact fishing in Waikato Regional Council’s designated marine area encompassing areas of the Hauraki Gulf.

As I’ve stated before, our local Hauraki Gulf Marine Park trawl and Danish seine operators do not use the destructive fishing techniques in a way that is seen on the film Ocean with David Attenbourgh. Yet the public continues to be told, falsely, that inshore mobile bottom contact fishers are operating in a way similar to how it is carried out overseas, along with selected bottom trawl YouTube footage.

Rather, our inshore working fishers only skim the top of the sea floor, causing minimal sediment disturbance and very little by-catch.

A way forward for the Industry in the future might be to provide photographic and video examples as evidence of how trawling and Danish seining are actually done in our local waters. This would demonstrate they are both an acceptable way of harvesting this area’s valuable fish resource and would show comparisons in seafloor biodiversity between trawled areas and untrawled areas.

We need to do more to definitively dismiss this constant misinformation. Industry knows there is negligible impact on the seafloor, certainly within the modified environments that exist today and they need to start presenting that more usefully. Certainly, the constant examples from the other fisheries around the world need to be exposed as something entirely different.

really are damaging the ocean seafloor biodiversity.

Wouldn’t the areas that have been trawled for 125 years have stopped producing entirely? In my experience with both trawling and Danish seining, some areas always seemed unproductive and other areas were constantly productive, as long as they were just rested like a farmer’s paddock.

THE COMMENT MARINE RESERVES “FORMING AN OASIS IN THE DESERT” IS AN UNREALISTIC PORTRAYAL: Personally I’m not aware that fishing (using Snapper as an example) is hard or becoming more difficult. What I do know as a fisherman is that every year is different, very similar to farming on land. We have had the milky white fleshed snapper syndrome which now seems to have eased but undoubtedly killed many fish. Conversely, we seem to have had great snapper spawning successes and are finding waves of juveniles in the fishery.

The Snapper fisheries area one (SNA FMA1) is looked upon as a shared fishery between commercial and recreational. The 2023 stock assessment/plenary report had commercial catches at 4500 tonnes the maximum allowable under the current commercial catch for SNA1. The recreational estimated catch was between 3100-3500 tonnes for the same area. To zoom in on the Hauraki Gulf area however, commercial fishing caught 2000 tonnes and recreational fishing caught an estimated 2500 tonnes. So, if people are finding Snapper fishing harder at times. The increase in recreational catch surely needs to be taken into account.

ON SCALLOP DREDGING: Our operators use the “Victorian box dredge”. These dredges are fully adjustable and fine-tuned to

high efficiency, with mesh size to allow under-size scallops to flow through the dredge. Recreational dredges are often inefficient especially on difficult to work sea floor substrates, they can spear and ruin as many scallops as are caught and would have impacts on the fishery. Commercial scallop dredges have a positive conservation role in keeping scallop-eating starfish under control, with operators catching quantities of these predators to help future scallop numbers.

BOTTOM SCALLOP GROUND DIVERSITY COMPARISONS: NIWA carried these out between 2012-2021 showing no apparent changes to the seabed biodiversity in that area. Again, the David Attenborough film showed severe damage to dredged scallop grounds in the UK with the accompanying fall out. The argument that scallop dredging is damaging seafloor biodiversity in NZ is part of the mobile bottom-contact concern. Therefore, like trawling, the use of underwater video could obtain up to date dredged areas footprint comparisons to see if the seafloor and its inhabitants are not being adversely affected.

Another solution would be to harvest scallops by diving. This however would require expensive vessel modifications on top of the operators’ incomes affected by the closure of the scallop fishery, along with recruiting experienced divers to engage in what is an often-dangerous occupation.

Because of this perhaps a buy out of the current licences is needed and then decide what is going to happen to the Coromandel Scallop Fishery.

T

he Tenth Anniversary of Thames’ annual Steampunk event always promised to be spectacular, and so it was. Four days of paid events and public parades capped off a strenuous year of organisation for the local committee.

Over the four days of the event, there was never a dull moment, no excuse to look away. Organiser Paula Munro says, “This being the tenth anniversary of Steampunk The Thames, the organising committee went allout to try and make sure this year’s event included as many of the other events going on in and around Thames. The Festival exists for the benefit of all Thames.”

The Festival included four ticketed events, starting on Friday night with the “Clockwork Conundrum” Quiz Night, which was sold-out well ahead of time.

“It’s absolutely brilliant, it's

always popular. And it's always fun too – everyone just really enjoys it.

It's good fun.”

Then there was the “Cog & Corset Cabaret,” which was a new event on the festival calendar. “It's not something we featured before, in our sort of ball seating, but we thought we'd do something different this year and make it really special for the 10th anniversary. The cabaret was the big drawcard,” but at the same time there was “Punk The Pump House”, – a proven Festival event.

“There was a good band, lots of food, a bar, dancing all night, and everybody loved it.”

Teapot Racing is a Kiwi Steampunk innovation that’s made it all around the world over the last ten years, celebrated at Ste-

ampunk events everywhere.

Essentially, it’s an obstacle course for remote control vehicles carrying a teapot of some description. “We had a bunch that came over from the UK and

two ladies actually took out the Teapot Racing trophy. They will take the trophy back home, have it engraved, and come back next year to defend their title.

They said “it’s just the most fun they've ever had.”

Another action-packed highlight on the Festival was the Hobby Horse racing.

“Hobby horse racing gets quite competitive with a bit of argybargy. The older people that do the hobby horse racing are crazy, really, they're absolutely mental. They might be fragile, but it doesn't stop them busting into each other with a hobby horse or, trying to trip each other over.”

It was amusing watching literally hundreds of foreign tourists, stepping off their buses, wandering around, bemused amongst the orchestrated anar-

chy of the Festival, wondering what to make of it all, but enjoying the spectacle nonetheless.

What Steampunk The Thames brings into sharp focus is the ingenuity and creativity of the backyard Kiwi visionary. “Thames has got the real essence of number 8 wire. Any local around here can take something that’s nothing, and turn it into something that is actually great. We’ll use it for another 100 years, and we don't care. We just carry on. It’s a real Kiwi can-do sort of thing, and we’re just shameless with it.”

It’s a credit to the organisers of the event Steampunk The Thames that, in spite of all the madness and mayhem it inspires, is a massive scale event which, literally goes off like clockwork. Given that this was once the most heavily industrialised centre in New Zealand, it’s no surprise that ‘Steampunk The Thames’ resonates so deeply with people here. Industry is authentically Thames.

Thank you for the very positive feedback on last week’s column. We are very fortunate to have an independent community newspaper that seeks to inform, entertain and give analysis of matters that impact all of us.

There appears to be a resurgence of interest from local communities in their own media sources that leads to local problems being identified, discussed and solutions found. That in turn can and should influence our decision makers at both the local, district and national level.

Statistics over the past few years show a continuing decline in national newspaper circulation numbers.

This also applies to radio and television particularly the ones that receive a good chunk of public funding.

There are several factors that impact on these numbers including changes in readership habits, the shift to digital platforms

and struggles in maintaining advertising revenue.

Increasingly people are accessing a wide variety of news sources from digital platforms.

I suspect that there are several other reasons. I have been an avid newspaper reader for the past 50 years. My expectation is that news sources are accurate, objective, and balanced. These expectations are incorporated in the New Zealand Broadcasting Standards Authority.

Sadly, the trend towards opinion pieces, taking an often-ill-advised side to an issue, printing headlines that are not supported by the content of the article and a tendency to either trivialise matters or conversely to over dramatize them that has led to reader voting with their feet.

In comparison Community newspapers are thriving. Let’s support local and maybe, just maybe, the big players will start to improve when they take

note of what’s happening at the grass roots.

A BRIEF NOTE ON MY BACKGROUND I worked in the Public Sector for 44 years. A large proportion of that time was in senior leadership positions at New Zealand Police and the Department of Corrections.

I now work part time as a consultant in emergency management. I have a post graduate degree in Terrorism Safety and Security.

I work in the community in a volunteer capacity as the Presiding Member of the Whenuakite School Board of Trustees, a Committee member of the Hahei Residents and Ratepayers Association and a member of the Hahei Civil Defence Community Response Group and the Hahei Reserves Group.

When I get the opportunity, I volunteer as a watch assistant on the Spirit of Adventure’s sailing ship the Spirit of New Zealand working with teenagers.

Gracepoint launches wellbeing Road closed programmes to tackle burnout for two W weeks

DAYTIME CLOSURES ON SH25A (KŌPŪ-HIKUAI)

This is a major road rebuild.

The work will take place from Monday, 10 November until approximately Friday, 21 November, with the state highway closed from 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday.

The 2 sites, each approximately 1km long, between Kōpū and Hikuai, are narrow with steep drop-offs, and the work cannot be done safely with the road open.

The road will reopen under single lane and stop/ go each evening from 5pm and on Sunday, 16 November. Delays can be expected.

Dates are weather-dependent.

Critical services such as first responders and school buses will be escorted through the site during the day. All other vehicles will be required to take the SH25 detour which adds an hour to the travel time.

ith mental health challenges on the rise across New Zealand, a new organisation called Gracepoint has launched to provide practical, compassionate and structured support for people struggling with burnout and the personal toll of long-term caring.

Gracepoint’s first two programmes, Care for Carers and Burnout Recovery, are designed to help individuals rebuild resilience, find rest, and reconnect with a sense of purpose.

Programme Director Kristy Ewing says the rise in stress-related illnesses, compassion fatigue, and burnout, highlights an urgent need for targeted support. “Many people caring for a loved one with a disability or terminal illness give everything they have, often at the cost of their own wellbeing. Likewise, we’re seeing others break under increasing financial pressure or the demands of constant, relentless workloads,” says Kristy.

“They’re exhausted but keep going, often because stopping isn’t really an option. At Gracepoint, our programmes bring together professional counselling, care, and community support in a place where people can recover, rebuild, and reconnect with what really matters. It’s about helping them restore their strength so they can

KidsCan fundraiser was helped by local businesses

n Friday evening, 17 October was a very successful Charity Casino and Auction night for Auckland Master Builders including Coromandel and Northland. This amazing fund-raising event raised over $37,000 for KidsCan! Coromandel Master Builders organised a Live Auction Package with a day fishing charter generously donated by Whitiangler, with the fuel for the boat for the day donated by Fuel 2U, and refreshments at the end of the day donated by Grace O’Malley’s Irish Bar. This package sold for $2,600 alone, so a great help for kids in need.

These Christmas crackers can be purchased at Woolworths, with proceeds going to KidsCan.

The Master Builders Executive Board which includes Richard from HAMR Homes, Whitianga, also donated a “Whitianga Package” with swim and spa vouchers from The Lost Spring, accommodation and a basketful of locally produced goodies.

“It was a great way to showcase the local region. We have so many wonderful locally produced products and all high quality.,” said Richard.

Well known White Star Trail truisms have – Walk into the heart of been ignored the Coromandel Peninsula

own through history, statements made by well-known leadership persons and scholars, have been repeated over and over in an effort to warn following generations not to make mistakes their forbears made.

A famous United States President, Abraham Lincoln, said “You should not expect the Government to do for you, what you can and should do for yourself”. Amazingly, there is a corollary to that statement in New Zealand.

“You cannot do for yourself what you can and should do, without Government authorisation.” The law clearly states this and the Government will back this up with prosecution. In simple terms this means, do not do anything other than what you are doing now. And now we have thousands and thousands of unemployed not permitted to help themselves.

A meeting some years ago was addressed by the United States Agricultural Attaché. He said, “People create wealth and governments consume it,”whilst our Governments are now not permitting people to create wealth. Winston Churchill backed all of this up when he said, “We must beware of building a society where nobody counts for anything except a politician or an official.” Isn’t that exactly what we have now?

The politicians and especially the staff in the local government have control of your property. There is not the slightest doubt about this fact. Some people near Katikati built a collection of sheds apparently living in some of them and the failure to get a resource consent has earned them a fine of $146,000 plus an order from the judge in the Environment court to dismantle the buildings.

In Te Aroha, a man has been living in a commercial building. Why there is a rule in the District Plan banning people from living in commercial premises, is not known. How-

ever, the Council has reportedly spent over $50,000 to get the man out of the building. It was once believed that everyone had a right to food and shelter. Another belief simply stated is ‘Do no harm, cause no loss and no injury; then there is no crime.’

However it appears to be preferable to choose, in Auckland Queen St., a shop doorway or a car for shelter, just as long as you do not attempt to do anything to help yourself by constructing any form of shelter in Auckland or anywhere else in New Zealand for that matter.

Those who have taken the freedoms away will attend the Anzac Dawn Services all pious and humble to show their thanks, while undermining our democracy and trampling all over the values people gave their lives to preserve.

I am not saying this for deaf ears. I believe that somewhere people will call our processes to account so that our freedom to improve our lives without burdensome regulations, will bring more prosperity and hope.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR TEACHERS The Informer article, “There is never a good time to strike,” (28/10/25) suggests that “fewer social handout programs” could provide funds for paying teachers, doctors and nurses more, which in turn might result in a decrease in the need for those social handouts. Maybe, but might I suggest that instead of cutting social programs which would likely be to the detriment of those on low incomes, we could source the funds needed from those at the other end of the income scale who receive what some would describe as social welfare for the rich, through financial schemes designed to pay less tax, percentage wise, than the average taxpayer. We could achieve this through a wealth tax or similar instrument. “Ahh,” I hear some say, “But if you tax the wealthy, they will take their money offshore to more tax friendly places.”

I would then have to ask the question, why it is we can’t afford to pay teachers, doctors and nurses enough to stay in New Zealand, but we can afford to allow the wealthy to pay much less tax than the rest of us, so they will stay here? Surely a more balanced approach, is preferable.

Both the Informer article and Leighton Duerre’s excellent letter (28/10/25), point out that teacher salaries compared with those of MPs have been drastically reduced over the last 40 years. Could this be partly the result of the major neoliberal reforms of the 1990s which smashed the power of unions, while MP salaries have been determined by the Remuneration Authority, without the need for bargaining and negotiating? Having been a high school teacher for some years during that time, I was witness to the huge increase in teacher workloads with the advent of Tomorrow’s Schools” with no corresponding rise in salaries. I don’t imagine things have changed much since. So, I support public servants’ right to strike when necessary, and I would urge the implementation of more balanced government policies that would encourage headlines of the future like, “Teachers’, nurses’ and doctors’ pay rises see a significant decline in those leaving NZ”.

For example, my energy distributor has just sent me a letter informing me that the price of an electricity unit has gone up by 5%a kwh, and the availability charge by 25% a day – from $1.20 to $1.50 a day.

The Government had a law that capped the cost but have taken it away. Why? These increases are part of a long set.

It all started when our government sold off the taxpayer -owned system into private hands believing that free market competition would keep that price down. What a mistake! The electricity system had been set up for the well-being of citizens, but now it was in the hands of wealth with profit as the incentive.

Roger Douglas, the Max Bradford reforms, resulted in rising power bills and a larger gap between the haves and the have nots.

The failure of Government can be rectified by nationalising the

system again.

On Wednesday, 29 October 2025, I was formally sworn in at the Waikato Regional Council building in Hamilton alongside my fellow newly elected Councillors.

Following the official swearing-in ceremony, I was honoured to be elected by my fellow councillors as Chairperson of the Waikato Regional Council for the forthcoming three-year term. It is a particular privilege to be the first Chairperson to represent the Thames–Waihi– Coromandel Peninsula. I commenced my full-time duties as Chair on Thursday, 30 October 2025, and regard this appointment as both a significant honour and a serious responsibility.

While I remain proud to represent the Thames–Waihi–Coromandel constituency, I am equally proud to now serve the wider Waikato region. I look forward to leading a capable and committed team of Councillor’s as we work together to achieve

meaningful outcomes for our communities - particularly in the areas of environmental protection, water management, public transportation and economic growth.

At last a job! I became a Policy Facilitator

oney has been a bit tight lately, the Rates, Regional Rates and various insurances have swallowed up about 32 weeks of my pension and the people that charge these fees don’t seem to give a toss about how I am to survive.

Not to worry though, I should be able to have something to eat in May next year, unless of course I got a job. It was quite a relief therefore to get a phone call offering me a facilitator role with a political party having a weekend policy workshop session. They wanted to take advantage of my think tank facilitator experience and had heard I would probably be after a job, and that I was cheap, so after negotiating a fee roughly equivalent to 32 weeks of pension I prepared myself for a weekend at a secret spot in the Hutt Valley.

I duly arrived early, laden with flip charts and crayons for the politicians’ use. They arrived in dribs and drabs and finally their leader strolled in and introduced himself by shaking my hand and cheerfully instructing me to “Call me Chumpy”. At the time this struck me as unusual, but by the end of the weekend it seemed appropriate. Once everybody was

seated, I wandered around with a box demanding their phones be handed over as we needed them to concentrate and experience had taught me that adolescent minds are easily distracted. There was a bit of moaning, but Chumpy told them to obey, so they eventually filled the box with their connections to the outside world. I now had their attention and could proceed.

The session started with an explanation from me on the process to be followed and what end of the crayons they should use to write with, after which I asked if they had done any preparatory

work on policies with which they would like to commence. There was a stunned silence with everyone looking into space shaking their heads until Chumpy started waving his hand in the air and excitedly declaring, “I’ve got one, I’ve got one”. I nodded to him, holding out a crayon, and he leapt to his feet and excitedly scribbled “Future Fund” on the flip chart before sitting down, looking round the room beaming. Everybody else clapped.

I asked Chumpy to provide a bit more information for the group.

He wrote up some points; Combine State Owned Enterprises

into a group, profits to boost Kiwi businesses, keep NZ Assets in NZ, were written on the flip chart before he sat down. Somebody asked, “If Kiwi Rail was in that group, wouldn’t it just be a loss-making fund?” The rest of the group started hissing so I had to quieten them down and then the voice from the back stated, “If we sold the loss-making enterprises it may work.” This was followed by more hissing.

I thanked Chumpy for his contribution and quickly hurried on to see if we could get something more sensible so asked the Finance spokesman for any ideas they had been thinking about.

She proudly strode forward and wrote on a new page, “Tax the Buggers Capital” and then started gushing about raising billions to write off debt and stabilise the economy. There was quite a clamour. “What about my house?” “What about my businesses?” and so on. I told everybody to sit down and one person at a time to speak. I selected one after another to explain their concerns. As the session neared the end, the flip chart was filled with words such as “House”, “Shares” “Farm” and “Business” which had all been crossed out. Also crossed out was “Pay off Debt” and “Econ-

omy” which had been replaced with “Spend More”.

Chumpy then came forward and announced that they wouldn’t start that until the end of 2027, so everybody had time to sell their rental properties and buy shares before it came into effect. Everybody clapped when he said that.

I thought we needed something more constructive. I asked the Transport spokesperson for their thoughts. He announced a plan to solve Auckland’s transport problems and drew a circle on a flip chart sheet. He then put a cross at the bottom of the circle, writing CBD beside it. He then wrote other crosses around the circle with place names such as Takapuna, Albany and Orewa beside them. The top cross was labelled Kaupapa and down the other side he wrote Helensville and Whenuapai. “That’s the plan,” he announced confidently before following up with, “And it will all be a light rail tunnel. We already have a name for it – KIWI TUNNEL!”. The crowd hollered; quite a bit of thigh slapping took place.

They were enthused.

I looked at my watch and noticed we were only an hour into a two day session. This was going to be a very challenging way to earn some money.

he first Tuesday of November re-kindles our enthusiasm for horse racing throughout New Zealand and for Whitianga this is no exception. Various establishments stage events to host race goers and for locals the Mercury Bay Club seemed to win the prize for most effort with stunning decorations and raffles. They too had prizes for best dressed so some of the blokes made an effort and replaced their singlets with a proper shirt. The TAB was doing great business and there were also sweepstakes available for the random choice practitioners.

Stoked also made a good effort, probably catering for people who would rather watch the view than a horse race. Once again prizes were on offer for best dressed attendees, and all guests received a ticket upon entry with generous spot prizes being awarded. Live music was provided and of course sweepstakes were provided 11

The Whitianga Hotel also hosted a Melbourne Cup event but I hear they didn’t turn on their TAB facility for the earlier races, so lost a lot of custom to their competition in Albert Street.

I’m sure they will be more on to it next year, maybe having a horse racing event organized by a horse racing person.

All up it was a good day for all and the photo montage will confirm that those who attended all enjoyed the hospitality on offer at the various establishments around town, regardless of their prior knowledge of the equine racing sport.

Top harmony from three choirs

hree choirs combined to bring a very tuneful, quality choral concert to a full crowd at the Whitianga Town Hall on Sunday afternoon, 9 November. The Conchord Pauanui, a relatively new choir, Te Aroha Community Choir, and Mercury Bay Choir, along with its own Ensemble group, combined to bring the Sunday afternoon concert.

There had already been a concert at Pauanui the day before, presented by the same choirs.

Every year the Mercury Bay Community Choir brings a concert to their community, but this year everything went up a level with three communities uniting to perform together but also to present some pieces particular to their choir. Everyone was keen to perform in the three different communities There were three choir conductors – Kate Nielsen for the Mercury Bay and Combined Choir, Celia Young for the Conchord Pauanui, and John Mullon for the Te Aroha Community Choir. There was a plentiful supply of excellent pianists. The music was from a number of cultures and from many different decades. It was joyful and foot stomping at times and then it could be soulful and prayerful.

Almost 200 people enjoyed this combined concert. Well done to so many who put in the hard work – the conductors, the singers and the pianists. The choir voice is a naked voice. It has simple backing and there are no pre-recorded tracks.

It is just the human voice harmonising with other voices, listening carefully to your own sound and to the voice next to you. It is an art form, a skill. Together the choir is a form of community. We need the choirs. I commend the Mercury Bay Performing Arts as they are encouraging and involving children in singing with their own voices.

Good first sign of progress that the dog is to wag its own tail PREPARED FROM EDITOR’S NOTES

any rate payers have had the feeling that over the past few years the tail was wagging the dog at the Mercury Bay Community Board. Decisions on Community issues seemed to be deferred, or ignored altogether, once they got past the Community Board level. Such rate payers voted for change at the last election.

Once the dust had settled from the last election rate payers were able to put in submissions regarding issues they felt needed resolving or completion. Various submissions were put in covering such issues as the Taputapuatea Spit, Flood Protection and Road Management on the Esplanade amongst others. The writers of these submissions all sought to present their submissions at the next Community Board meeting on 13 November.

The response from the TCDC staff was that the November meeting would be tied up with what they called governance and training issues. The Community Board had already attended a number of such meetings, so we wondered whether they were either not very bright or if the TCDC staff just needed more time

We objected to the delay and after a couple of days we were told the delay would stay but we could send submissions directly to the Community Board members, which we did.

Ratepayers were therefore to remain frustrated but at a chance meeting with the Chairman elect of the local Community Board it was discovered that our representatives were equally frus-

trated. They were concerned that after being voted into office in October they were not going to start work until February, all due to what looked like staff obstruction. Looked like a case of tail wagging the dog to community members.

An early sign that the dog was gaining control of its appendage.

arrived at but there was too much effort and angst forced on the community to get to that outcome. The Community Board is the community’s representatives and conduit to the full council.

The Community Board meetings should therefore be a community event controlled and managed by the Community Board, not by the public servants who are there to assist with and execute decisions.

hane Hardy and Joan Roseman were recently honoured with Life Membership at the Mercury Bay Golf Club. That means each of them has been a golfer with the Club for 50 years.

Shane joined the golf club in 1971 and Shane joined in 1972.

Shane remembers getting a few free games of golf because he was able to do some electrical work as a volunteer. At the time he was an electrician working for the Power Board.

“When I first started playing golf, I would be all dressed up for the weekend golf game and nine times out of ten I would be called out to fix something to do with an electrical fault,“ says Shane. “I had no choice as I was on call for the

weekends.”

Shane loves golf and since the time when the Golf Club expanded its land to be an 18 Hole course, he has been helping as a volunteer on the grounds.

He has enjoyed the vigorous outdoor work to make the golf club so well presented and manicured.

Most Thursdays, Shane joins the team of volunteers at the golf club in working bee clothes rather than smart golf clothes. There is all manner of work required to maintain the Golf Course at such a high standard.

Joan too is a very competent golfer and has a long list of achievements. Two photos stood out on the Golf Club rooms wall relating to Joan and to the achieve-

ments of golfing in Whitianga .

In 1980, the Mercury Bay Golf Club team was the Bay of Plenty Pennant Champions. Joan was one of the four members of that winning team.

In 2019, 39 years later, Mercury Bay Golf Club once again won the Bay of Plenty Club Association Pennant and Joan was a member of that team – undoubtedly sustaining a very good level of golf over 40 years.

The community congratulates and thanks Joan and Shane for their skill, but more so for their faithful membership and service to the golf club and the community.

T

he Mercury Bay Boating Club is located in Whitianga, NZ on the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. Whitianga is a vibrant thermal ocean village with gorgeous beaches, a large marina, wonderful treks and numerous nearby top 10 New Zealand Destinations like Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove, and the Hahei marine reserve.

Our junior programs focus on youth development, safety at sea, sailing skills, and some fun racing. We are not a tactical training academy but instead one that fosters respect for the sea, love of the sport, and an appreciation of our local waters.

Our local area school has more than 1000 students and we have smaller rural schools within 45 minutes of our learn to sail centre. Each summer we welcome dozens of families from Auckland, Tauranga and Hamilton who want to participate in learn to sail programs.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED: • At least 1 year experience as a junior

position, October to March the following year.

TASKS: * Coach LTS 1 juniors using the club’s rotomoulded Optimists. * Coach LTS 2 and 3 juniors using the club’s roto-moulded Optimists and Fusions. * Recruit and coach adult LTS sailors using the club’s Fusions and Hobie Cats. * Supervise bi-weekly Centreboard Sundays - we have several good sailors who now have their own Lasers and Microns, or club boats can be chartered. * Coach our Mercury Mentor program (youngest age group) in conjunction with our sailing members using Hobie Cats and Fusions (always with a coach/ adult sailor on board).

PROPOSED DATES: DECEMBER TO LATE MARCH. Dec and Feb/March sessions: 12-16 hrs per week spread over 3 to 4 days. Sessions are run after school, on the weekends.

Summer Holiday Sessions: Block courses, 4 to 5 days per week. These are 30 to 40

hr weeks with morning and afternoon sessions, usually 2 days sailing, then a lay day, followed by 2 more days sailing. Normally LTS 1 in the morning and LTS 2 in the afternoon.

NZ Trio is one of New Zealand’s most exciting and popular chamber ensembles.

To top off a weekend of pop and rock music at the Seafood Festival at Whitianga Hotel, a combined community choral event at a full Town Hall, NZ Trio performed at St. Andrews By The Sea on Sunday at 5.00pm.

They gave a magnificent concert.

Violinist Amalia Hall, Pianist Somi Kim and newly appointed cellist Matthias Balzat performed classical music with pieces spanning a period 150 years.

The last piece from Arnold Schonberg was hauntingly moving and full of passion. It brought tears to the eyes – emotions of love, grief and a full experience of the heavenly sounds being created.

We need this kind of music.

What a feast of music was prepared and brought to the people of the Coromandel Peninsula this past weekend.

had the great pleasure of listening to Raewyn, Stephen and Steven who formed a Jazz trio at the Monkey House last Saturday evening, 8 November.

The concert began at 8.00pm and every seat was taken. Gentle artistic lighting, with a grey shimmery metallic screen at the back of the stage set the scene.

The setting was just right for a jazz night. Most had a glass of juice or wine or a cocktail to savour while listening.

From the very beginning, the audience had clear sound; – you could hear the vocals and all the note – soothing, not harsh – in the zone. Dave Rhodes one of New Zealand’s best and most experienced sound engineers was at the sound desk fine tuning.

The full crowd – a sold-out show – at the Monkey House then experienced a very professional, extraordinary jazz trio led by local singer Raewyn Watkins.
