The musical, set on a Greek island, showcases single mom Donna and her daughter Sophie. About to marry, Sophie finds Donna’s diary. Secretly sending invitations to all three possible dads, mayhem ensues when all three arrive for the wedding.

Over 60 million people worldwide have loved the show, which features familiar hit songs from superstar band ABBA: Mamma Mia, Super Trouper, Waterloo, Honey Honey, Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight), and of course, I Do I Do I Do I Do I Do. Nominations being sought for Mothers of the Year celebration If you think your Mom is the best, or you know of a special woman in your life, you have until April 15 to nominate her for Biggar Prairie Branches annual Mothers of the Year celebrations this May 7.

The Mothers of the Year Tea, to be held at the Biggar Community Hall, brings together women nominated from their respective communities not necessarily mothers - all to raise needed funds for the Biggar Prairie Branches. It not only is a chance to treat those special women, but a great chance to treat yourself to an afternoon of pampering, good company, and entertainment.

athletes. With Scotties veteran and third Stefanie Lawton, the Saskatchewan rink was what TSN called “one of the major stories” of this year’s Canadian championship held in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

With Biggar televisions tuned in to the Scotties, and every shot an “edge of your seat” experience, Silvernagle, Lawton, Hunkin and Thevenot were OUR team, OUR curlers, OUR champions.

Many in town believe that the 2019 Scotties run will make the team better. Given that the Silvernagle rink takes home a bronze medal for its efforts - the first medal of any flavour since 2011 - makes their first run at the Scotties a truly masterful performance.

‘Toon car thief charged with Biggar theft In the early morning hours of February 21, Biggar RCMP were on routine patrol and attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a car in the Town of Biggar.

Attempts were made to stop the vehicle however the car fled out of town and was not pursued.

Weather is weather There is just one thing on people’s minds these days -- it is cold. Cold and colder. It is the first thing people say when they walk in the door and there is never any argument.

The Farmers Almanac says the weather in March will go from cold to cool in March. That certainly gives a lot of leeway. More snow is predicted right into April.

Meanwhile one radio weatherman says that we will have to endure the cold for another couple of weeks, likely the middle of March and then it will abruptly turn warm. Does that mean spring is just around the corner? It is anybody’s guess.

By this time any prediction the groundhog made is forgotten.

So, much as everyone likes to talk about the weather and complain about it there is nothing to be done but endure. Winter in Canada is winter. It can be cold with lots of snow or not. Usually when it is cold we get sun.

One thing, for Biggarites, the town has a great snow removal crew. It is by far one of best in the province.

Bill C-69 and the intersection of identity and pipelines

by Marla Orenstein, director of the Natural Resources Centre at the Canada West Foundation Lawyers are stumped. TV show anchors are flummoxed. Some energy companies state they are facing an impossible task.

What is it that has so many seasoned professionals bewildered and at a loss as to what to do? It’s the directive in Bill C-69 that requires an environmental assessment of proposed projects to consider “the health, social and economic effects, including with respect to the intersection of sex and gender with other identity factors.”

It’s this last bit that has some people worried. They aren’t sure exactly what it means to assess a project’s effect in light of the intersection of sex, gender and other identity factors. And it can be difficult to make a connection between this puzzling language and the reality of building a major project such as a pipeline.

The concept is not terribly difficult to understand, nor is the burden on the project proponent onerous. But the government hasn’t done a great job of explaining that.

Bill C-69 was introduced by the government several months ago and is currently under review by the Senate. It replaces the current environmental assessment process for projects with a new and somewhat different process.

The new wording means that when a project is proposed, its potential positive and negative effects have to be assessed, including how the project could affect different people differently.

Not all people are the same, and not everyone will experience the benefits and effects of the project in the same way. Some people will get jobs; some won’t.

Some people may see their house values rise; others may experience an increase in their rents. Some people may find it harder to provide for their families through hunting or fishing; for others, it won’t matter.

What this new wording does is require that the assessment looks specifically at how the project’s risks and benefits are distributed differently among different groups. Do men and women both have an equal opportunity to benefit from the jobs offered? Is the land that the project will use important for certain groups in particular? Are there particular groups that are more likely to experience health problems as a result of the project?

It is unlikely that anyone would have a problem with ensuring that specific groups aren’t unfairly hurt or jeopardized, or that some groups don’t unfairly benefit at the expense of others. It is appropriate that project proponents figure out what these effects might be and how to address them. Already, some companies in Canada are world leaders in addressing these issues.

But the language in Bill C-69 is confusing, and without explanation and clarity, there is much misunderstanding and concern. Some people worry the clause means that a company could be taken to court if half of the site managers, construction workers and suppliers aren’t female. Other people are concerned they will have to commit resources to demonstrating that that there are no sex, gender or identity implications that will need to be analyzed even when in areas where they aren’t relevant – for example, when looking at the effects of soil disturbance on plant growth.

While these kinds of questions and consequences may not be what the government intended by including the clause in Bill C-69, the inclusion of this wording without much explanation has been like waving a red flag in front of a bull: Predictably, the bull is mad and charging.

Will having this new language in the legislation matter? In practical terms – not really. The evaluation of effects with respect to gender and other identity factors has been happening for years within federal

assessments, even though similar language does not appear in the current legislation.

One reason for this is that the terms of reference for the environmental assessment – developed by the federal regulator – have almost always specified that vulnerable populations be examined individually, despite the lack of this language in the legislation.

Another reason is that international best-practice guidance on impact assessment says the same thing, and that mitigations must be developed to minimize adverse effects.

So then, how do we calm things down? The first answer is better communication. Specific, concrete examples are needed to help the public, industry and stumped lawyers grasp what some of the ways are that a project could actually influence different people differently – and why it is important.

The second answer is recognizing that including this phrase is virtue signaling on the part of government; that while having the phrase within Bill C-69 is not actually necessary in order to ensure that impact assessments look at effects on vulnerable groups, it reinforces the government’s overall commitment to gender equality.

The last piece is recognizing that those who are objecting have some reasonable concerns. Establishing this requirement in legislation means that a decision is open to legal challenge if the standard isn’t met – but there is not yet precedent for what constitutes “legally adequate” assessment of sex, gender and other identity factors in the context of project assessment.

Ensuring that projects are built well is in everyone’s interest – and understanding how different groups are affected differently is key. But so, too, is ensuring that where new concepts are introduced, clarity follows.

We can get this right.

Town revives the days of Route 66

They wander the streets and wait to be fed. They come and go as they please posing in pictures, letting people pet them.

These burros come down from the hills into town.

They are descendants of the burros that were brought to the area by the miners. When the mines shut down the burros were set free to roam the hills.

Oatman’s Main Street is a mix of historic buildings and boutique shops. The Drulin Hotel, later renamed the Oatman Hotel, was built in 1902. In its heyday it was a favourite of the miners although guests no longer frequent the establishment. There is a museum on the top floor and a bar and restaurant on the bottom floor.

In the early days of Route 66 Model Ts could be seen driving the road.

Later the highway was made famous through songs and television shows. The road was abandoned for super highways but Route 66 has made a revival as tourists are opting to drive the road more for nostalgia than anything else. It was an opportunity for towns along the way.

On a recent trip to Las Vegas, we decided to see a bit of the country side rather than just spending time in the casinos.

So, after renting a car we explored a few options and came up with Oatman, Arizona, a two hour drive from Sin City.

It had been raining in that part of the world and “a little bit of rain� to us translates into flooding to them. Along the way there were signs advising the road is closed when flood conditions apply. It is, after all, the desert.

However, we did arrive in the small town without incident and what we saw was a surprise. To be fair, it was a bit of a tourist trap but one of those fun, unobnoxious tourist traps. We thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon.

An Old Flame “Old Tex and I slept out last night The hills one solid silhouette.

Here, hesitating as I write How well I can remember yet!

Bob Mason When we were still quite young and of course hadn’t had many experiences yet. One warm summer evening a small group of us went out into the big shelterbelt surrounding to Springwell Farm, lit a small campfire, toasted a few marshmallows, drank a pitcherfull of lemonade, and visited far into the night!

One of the older boys really thrilled us by dra-

matically reciting “Shooting of Dan McGrew” by Robert Service, and we tried harmonizing a few campfire songs that we felt must be sung.

“Just a song at twilight, when the lights are low, And the flickering shadows softly come and go!

Though the heart be weary, sad the day and long Still to us at twilight comes lover old song.

Comes lo-o-ves o-o-old swe-e-et so-o-ong!”

After all these years, and with many more impressive experiences, how Y.T. remembers that long ago night, out underneath the stars and often wonders if the other guys do too!

Of course that was 70-some years ago... And we were young!

That was back in the 1930s, which, if I remember right, wasn’t a time for much singing!

As a matter of fact, many of our parents thought there wasn’t much hope of anything! But we sat there and gazed into the

embers of our campfire, much as our stone age ancestors must have done, and wondered, as mebbe they wondered, how come life wasn’t good to us?

Years later Y.T. happened to read a piece written

by Omar Khayyam a thousand years ago.

“A book of verses underneath the bough, A loaf of bread, a jug of wine and thou Beside me, singing in the wilderness.

Ah, Wilderness were paradise enow!”

We talk of progress, of entertainment and fulfillment at the push of a button. And yet back there in the 30’s when everything out west here seemed so desperate, we sat beside our campfire under a nearly willow and felt as though we

owned the earth!

Many of our neighbours thought it kind of queer that a person would break away, go wandering out in the lonely hills and sit beside a campfire.

And yet, to kind of dodge the pressures of the time, that is just what we did!

And Y.T. has never been sorry!

And we grew up thinking Bob Mason that way, feeling just a little apart from the ratrace we seemed to be in.

During those younger years Y.T. often felt that his efforts weren’t good enough to compete.

But later, when things changed quite a bit and he could excel at some of them, he went back to his campfires, because to him, they seemed the very basis of life!

How well Y.T. remembers that time in 1936 when we sat by our

campfire near the eastern end of Wilson Lake, hearing the loons and bitterns calling out there, and listening to the measured splash of water against the stony shore.

With a few of the local people, we sang far into the night again...

The nearby Lakeshore Nursery has long gone from its original site, the lake has disappeared and George Kraun a person of the past. But the memory of it all is still with me like it happened yesterday!

1939 and WWII weren’t too far ahead, and memories of another not-sohappy time keep crowding in trying to make me forget those campfires.

But I haven’t!

There have been hundreds of descriptions of campfire.

Robert Service wrote: “Heed me, feed me, I am hungry I am red-tongued with desire Boughs of balsam, slabs of cedar Gummy fagots of the pine.”

Another great (he thinks) “Robert” wrote:

And soon, with dreamy campfire done, My head upon the saddle seat.

Alarm clock set by rising sun At least I lay me down to sleep.

Like I say, there have been hundreds of pieces written about campfires, and mebbe Y.T. shouldn’t even mention his, but darn it all, the memory of them is what means the most to him!

Of course in the army we had a few chances to sit back and enjoy the comradeship of a few campfires. And when we came home, we tried to fit into the modern campfire parties, but it wasn’t the same. Everyone seemed to want so much more...

Y.T. looks in his old L and T (Life and Times) where he finds entries like “Cooking fish by the Maas River”, “Campfire on a cowpath” or “Camping in the rain”, but it is other parts like: “Content with everything we had Old Tex and I slept out last night!” that he remembers most!

I have been grateful for the sunshine, and grateful for all that’s

keeping me warm: central heating, hot water, a lightweight coat that is good and warm … and for Netflix to while away these nights of frigid temperatures!

Can you imagine what our ancestors went through a hundred years ago?

No central heating, uninsulated homes, outdoor plumbing, wood heat and the only clothing warm enough to go outside in would have been animal skins and fur, weighing several pounds!

But, I did read about the dances, box socials, moccasin dances, and A.W Mooney was giving away a car! The war in Europe was finished, and Dodd’s Little Liver Pills could fix most ailments! Seems there were dances and socials every weekend, either in Biggar or in outlying areas like Lydden.

But, I wanted to remain focussed on weather, so I hit the Internet and

found historical weather data for Saskatoon on February 26, 1919 – it was -45 that night! Daytime high was -28.9 ... these are in Celsius!

So, imagine what our ancestors were putting up with. How do you get to a dance in Lydden when it is -45 degrees?

Would cars start? Could horses pull a wagon without freezing their lungs?

Are there borders when it comes to agriculture?

by Calvin Daniels The other day, on one of those glorious afternoons when I was actually off for holidays, I was perusing Facebook primarily as a time sink, when I happened upon a post that I found interesting.

The post called for Canadian gas stations to sell only Canadian gas, and for stores to sell only Canadian beef.

While the post was rather specific in focusing attention on only two things, it made sense in terms of wanting to support the economy of Western Canada as oil and beef are rather sig-

nificant to the region.

On the surface the idea would seem to make excellent sense.

Frankly I’ve often thought there should be a maple leaf tag on any product made in Canada so that consumers could support local producers, and local

jobs.

But, then I paused long enough to remember items in a store are not so easily defined by some arbitrary border line on a map.

And, of course it’s important to remember the Calvin Daniels Canadian beef and oil sectors do rely heav-

ily on export sales to be viable.

We only need to recall what happened in 2003 when a case of bovine spongiform encephalopathy was identified in a cow in Alberta. Borders closed to Canadian exports of cattle and beef and the country was left with mountains of beef to deal with in a country with not enough people to deal with it. The cattle sector was shaken to its core with massive losses piling up until the BSE scare passed.

The Canadian agriculture sector in particular relies on access to export

markets to be viable.

It would be difficult to access those markets if we suddenly went to a Canadian only in-store system here.

The idea of a label works no better.

Producers in Canada fought long and hard against the idea of Country of origin labelling (COOL), in the United States because it was seen as a major detriment to market access of Canadian beef.

The issue becomes when does beef become only from a particular country? Is a calf born in Alberta forever Canadian? Or, if that calf is sold

Wholesale trade increase second highest in Canada Saskatchewan’s wholesale trade in December 2018 reflected a 16.3 per cent increase from December 2017 - the second highest increase among Canada’s provinces and the highest in Western Canada.

The increase was also higher than the national average of 1.7 per cent.

On a month-over-month basis, wholesale trade rose 4.0 per cent from

November 2018, higher than the national average of 0.3 per cent and the second highest among the provinces.

The number also places Saskatchewan as the highest in Western Canada. “Saskatchewan continues to show solid growth with solid wholesale trade numbers,� Trade and Export Development

Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “These increases on a year-over-year and month-over-month basis reflect strong market confidence and demand for Saskatchewan products - a positive indicator for the province’s economy.�

Wholesale trade totalled $2.5 billion in December 2018, up from $2.2 billion in December 2017.

Is this a scam? Red flags (NC) From spam emails to fake government workers asking for personal information on the phone, scams are all around us.

Some are more obvious than others, but do you know how to protect yourself from the sneakier ones?

Here are some warning signs for both online and offline scams: Wire transfer. Many scams involve a request to wire money electronically using a money transfer service like MoneyGram and Western Union, or using cryptocurrency such as Bitcoin. Remember that sending a transfer through these services is like sending cash — once the amount is picked up, it’s almost impossible to get your money back.

Unsolicited friend requests on social media.

Don’t accept friend requests from people you don’t know. Does their profile look fairly empty or have posts that are very generic? Do they seem to be promising more than friendship? These are some red flags that

point to a scam. Delete that request. Check your privacy settings to ensure your profile is protected.

Spelling mistakes. Be skeptical of emails, messages or websites that contain misspelled common words, grammar errors that make it difficult to read or expressions that are used incorrectly.

Email and web addresses should also be examined closely to see if there are subtle mistakes or differences.

It’s just too good to be true. Everybody loves a great deal. But shocking offers, unbelievable discounts and unreal rates may signal that the offer isn’t quite what it seems.

Ridiculously low prices

Hang up and call the organization yourself using the number from a trustworthy source, such as the phone book, their website, or even invoices and account statements.

He passed away February 16, 2019 in Saskatoon, Sask. at St. Paul’s Hospital just five days short off his 87th birthday. ol att Al Art went to school Alertt School, south east of Biggar, Sask. He farmed until the late 70’s-early 80’s and then relocated to the town of Biggar.

He worked at the former Univision and completed a course in refrigeration/air conditioning. Art was known for fixing most anything and worked around the area. In later years, he tinkered with tractors and small engines in his garage. He loved going for coffee with his friends on a daily basis.

(NC) Doing your taxes can seem like a difficult task, but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the key to getting the benefits and credits to which youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re entitled.

Even if you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have any income to report for 2018 or your income is tax exempt, you can still claim helpful tax credits and benefit payments.

Just remember to do your taxes by April 30, 2019.

The Canada Revenue Agency uses the information from your income tax and benefit return to calculate the benefit and credits to which you may be entitled. Some common payments include the Canada child benefit, child disability benefit, the GST/ HST credit, Guaranteed Income

Supplement, the working income tax benefit, and related provincial and territorial payments.

You only need to apply once for benefits and credits, but to continue getting your payments you need to

do your taxes on time every year and keep your personal information, like your address and marital status, up to date. Make sure to keep your supporting documents for at least six years in case the CRA asks for

by Paula Shortt Dylan Haynes is a local boy. Growing up in Biggar, he started skating at the age of five doing CanSkate.

“It was alright. It was nice being able to skate somewhat going into hockey so you could start to work on hockey skills instead of starting out trying to learn to skate just by leaning on a stick basically.”

Dylan started playing hockey when he was 6.

He was the first person in his family to play the sport and he has been a fan of hockey since before he can remember.

“I don’t know when I became a Leafs fan but I liked to watch a lot of hockey when I was a kid and always cheered for the Leafs and I just wanted to play hockey.”

Dylan headed off to U of S in 2012 to get his Bachelor of Commerce degree with a major in Accounting. While he was in Saskatoon he played Junior B for three years, and then in his fourth year of university, he came back to start playing with the Nationals. He is now in his fourth year with them

and he had a lot of positive things to say about being part of the team and the sport itself.

“It feels really good.

It’s nice to come home and play.

I haven’t played here since 2009, so to come back…

Yeah! My family lives here, so to come back and play at home again after like seven to eight years away… it’s nice. To come play at the home crowd again and see a lot of the young kids that are watching just kind of like I was watching when I first started playing hockey too.

“I think we all, the team, get along really well and I think that we actually are a really good team and have a good atmosphere.

We are usually pretty good at, for the most part, putting the puck in the net. I think we get the best of teams with our speed sometimes. When we are skating well, it’s

tough for a lot of teams to keep up with us I think.

“I like getting together with the team, and working towards something and I just have fun when I’m out there.

Screwing around sometimes on the ice and other times it is fun to just go out and play and try to get a win with your team… it’s a really fun group. It’s nice to come back every year and get a couple new faces and friends on the team.”

As another player who lives and works in Saskatoon and has to endure the commute, Dylan says, “Sometimes it’s tough to commit to the hours, especially when you’re not living in town. So sometimes the travel – especially if the roads get bad in the winter – [is tough] but once you get here it’s always fun. But there’s a lot of guys from

the city so we all kind of went together, so even when you are on the road all the time, you are still with some of your friends.”

In addition to his belief that hard work, not giving up, and having a good attitude are some of the traits of a good hockey player, he also states, “Being willing to learn, take instructions, to fit into a role. To do basically what is needed of you even if it’s not what you’d really prefer to do, if that’s what the team needs. That you are willing to adapt and fit into that role.”

In keeping with that belief, while he grew up playing Center, for the Nationals - Dylan is an extremely versatile player.

“I have played everything but goalie. I prefer to be Centre and I play that as often as I can, but I usually end up playing probably 40 per cent of the time on the wing, 40 per cent on Defense, and probably 20 per cent of the time at Centre. I kind of fill in wherever I’m needed. It depends kind of on what our lineup

looks like that night.”

When I asked whether the fans were an important part of his game, Dylan replied, “I love the fans. When we have a packed rink, it is really cool to hear all the cheering and see all the faces in the rink.

“Seeing the stands full I think, is kind of an indication of how the community likes hockey.

I think the fuller we have the stands, the better the chance is that there is going to be a minor hockey team at every level and that kids aren’t going to have to start leaving to go

play elsewhere at a young age.

“I think I was Bantam the first year I had to move out of town to play hockey. And it was fun, you get to meet an awful lot of new people and play in different arenas.

But it’s not the same as getting to play at home.

So hopefully, if the Nats continue to do good, that’ll get more kids interested in hockey and hopefully kind of build minor hockey in the community.”

Usher in spring with this delicious brunch dish (NC) Asparagus is a culinary superstar of spring.

Here’s an easy and delicious way to enjoy it — as a breakfast, lunch or light supper.

Asparagus and Goat Cheese Frittata Prep time: 15-20 minutes Cook time: 25 minutes Serves: 6 Ingredients: • 7 stalks asparagus • 1 tsp (5 mL) grapeseed, olive or avocado oil • 1/4 cup (60 mL) chopped onion • 1/4 cup (60 mL)

unsweetened soy or almond milk • 8 eggs • 1 tbsp (15 mL) chopped fresh parsley • 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt • 6 tbsp (40 grams) goat cheese Directions: 1. Remove woody ends of asparagus stalks by bending each stalk until it snaps. Discard ends and chop remaining stalks into 1-inch (2.5-cm) pieces.

2. In skillet, heat oil over

medium. Lightly sauté onion and asparagus for 4 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.

In medium bowl, beat milk, eggs, parsley, salt and cheese until cheese has broken up into small bits. Add asparagus and onions, mix everything together and pour into lightly oiled tart pan.

3. Bake in 350°F (190°C) oven for 20 minutes.

Remove from oven and let cool 5 minutes. Slice into wedges.
