St. Gabriel School held a unique Family Night, February 13, putting the brain to work with an imaginary scenario of family teams aboard a submarine that is attacked by pirates! The teams had 75 minutes to work through a series of clues and puzzles to fix their sabotaged sub and escape the nefarious designs of the pirates. SNC-Lavalin documentation must be protected, says Scheer The Honourable Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition Tuesday called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to preserve all documents relating to the ongoing SNC-Lavalin Affair after the cabinet resignation of Jody Wilson-Raybould.

In a letter sent to Trudeau this, Scheer called on him to ensure all documents including “memos, letters, e-mails, pins, SMS messages, and hand-written notes” pertaining to the prosecution of SNC-Lavalin be preserved amidst the pending cabinet shuffle to replace Ms. Wilson-Raybould.

The request applies to records held by former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould, Attorney General David Lametti, and senior Prime Minister’s Office officials including, but not limited

to, Katie Telford, Gerald Butts, Mathieu Bouchard, and Elder Marques.

“With Ms. WilsonRaybould’s resignation from cabinet, and a cabinet shuffle imminent, it’s absolutely imperative that Mr. Trudeau ensure the preservation of these records,” Scheer said.

“Canadians deserve to know the truth around what happened and these records must be preserved.”

Scheer also said Ms. Wilson-Raybould’s resignation is a sign of a government in disarray.

“Mr. Trudeau’s ethical lapses and his disastrous handling of this latest scandal have thrown his government into chaos,” Scheer said. “He promised Canadians open and transparent government and he has betrayed that promise. Canadians deserve better.”

Canada Revenue Agency launches the 2019 tax filing season This past Tuesday, the federal government announced that the 2019 tax filing season is officially open.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has now begun processing income tax and benefit returns filed by Canadians in the way that is most convenient for them.

“Over the past three years, our government has put service improvement at the top of our priorities,” said the Honourable Diane Lebouthillier, Minister of National Revenue. “The new services we have introduced at the Canada Revenue Agency have made it easier, faster and more secure for Canadians to file their taxes. These changes are delivering real results for Canadians. Whether online or on paper, I encourage all Canadians to file their 2018 taxes to claim the credits and benefits to which they are entitled, such as the Canada Child Benefit and the Climate Action Incentive in applicable provinces.”

Canadians can file their income tax and benefit returns online, on paper, or by telephone for those who qualify. Most Canadians’ income tax and benefit returns are due on April 30, 2019. March 1, 2019, is the deadline for contributing to a Registered Retirement Savings Plan. Canadians should have received most of the tax slips, such as T4s, and receipts needed to file a tax return by early March.

Self-employed individuals have until June 15, 2019 to file their returns. Since June 15, 2019 falls on a Saturday, the CRA considers your return to be filed on time,

if the CRA receives it by or it is postmarked midnight June 17, 2019. However, if you have a balance owing, you must pay it by April 30, 2019.

The objective of the CRA is to give taxpayers the information they need to file their taxes on time and receive the benefits and credits to which they are entitled. No matter how individuals choose to file their tax return, a number of improvements have been made to ensure that tax-filing is a user friendly experience, and continues to be fast, easy and secure.

This year the CRA have made significant improvements to our call centres, moving to a new modern telephone platform which features improved accessibility for callers. Now when an individual calls, they are given an estimated wait time, allowing them to choose to wait for an agent, call back later, or use one of our convenient self-serve options. The CRA has also improved training for call centre agents to ensure that Canadians get the answers they are looking for.

In addition to the many benefits and credits available to Canadians such as the Canada Child Benefit and the Canada Caregiver Credit, new this year is the Climate Action Incentive payment, which is available to eligible residents of Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick. Individuals can claim the payment when they file their income tax and benefit return.

By February 11, 2019, the CRA will have mailed the income tax package to individuals who filed on paper the previous year. The new all-in-one 2018 income tax package is improved with simplified language, enhanced information on forms and has a more userfriendly design.

In addition to the mail out, a limited quantity of tax packages will still be available at Canada Post, Service Canada, and some Caisse populaire Desjardins outlets (Quebec only). Canadians will also find information to order these products by phone or online in the language of their choice in case packages are no longer available in those locations.

History repeats itself This past week has brought some interesting events on the Trudeau and federal Liberal front. A scandal that could rival the Pearson-Diefenbaker era.

It was a Liberal government under Prime Minister Pearson that dealt with many scandals. Some of them pointless but some of them took on a more serious note. There was the influence peddling incident which involved drug smuggler Lucien Rivard that threatened the Prime Minister’s Office. Mr. Pearson’s parliamentary secretary Guy Rouleau and justice minister Guy Favreau were taken down and Pearson was left answering accusations that he mislead the House.

Then there was Yvon Dupuis who was forced to resign from cabinet after being accused of accepting a bribe. Maurice Lamontagne and Rene Tremblay had to resign after it was shown they were in cahoots with a cut-rate furniture trade in Quebec involving some very shady characters.

Shortly after being elected his finance minister Walter Gordon brought in a disastrous budget which, in the end, parts of it were rescinded.

And his opponent John Diefenbaker relentlessly pursued him.

Fast forward to 2019. Another Liberal Prime Minister and more scandals. Only the names have changed to Trudeau, Gerald Butts, Jody WilsonRaybould, and Bill Morneau.

You would have thought the Liberals would learn from their history.

Prime Minister Trudeau’s rhetoric reveals deep misunderstanding of taxes

by Jason Clemens, Executive Vice President, Fraser Institute; Jake Fuss, Policy Analyst, Fraser Institute; Milagros Palacios, Associate Director, Addington Centre for Measurement, Fraser Institute Last week in the House of Commons, in response to questions from the Opposition, Prime Minister Trudeau said low-income Canadians don’t benefit from tax reductions because they don’t pay taxes.

This political rhetoric reveals a deep misunderstanding and indeed lack of basic knowledge of the country’s tax system and perhaps explains the ongoing confusion in the government about their

tax relief record.

A central goal and often-repeated claim of this government is that it reduced income taxes for middle-class Canadians. This policy is exclusively rooted in the reduction of the second-lowest personal income tax rate from 22 to 20.5 per cent, which affects workers earning between $46,605 and $93,208.

As repeated analyses have demonstrated, though, the government’s other 2015 tax changes more than offset the tax rate reduction, resulting in most middle-class families now paying more— not less—federal taxes. Specifically, as part of the government’s first budget in 2015 in which the personal tax rate reduction was introduced, a number of tax credits were eliminated including the children’s fitness, public transit and income-splitting credits, which all acted to reduce people’s taxes if they were eligible.

But by eliminating these tax credits the government increased the effective tax burden on families that claimed such credits. A 2017 analysis found that 81 per cent of middle-class families faced higher income taxes once the elimination of the tax credits was included.

The government, however, continues to boast about its reduction in personal income taxes for middle-class Canadian families. To-date, most observers assumed this was simply political rhetoric. The prime minister’s recent comments, however, indicate it might actually be rooted in a lack of understanding of

the tax system.

Another 2017 study examined the federal government’s tax changes and how they influenced the bottom 20 per cent of workers in Canada. This is a particularly troubling analysis since the income levels of this group mean they did not benefit from the middle-class tax cut but were exposed to potentially higher taxes from the elimination of the tax credits. Specifically, the analysis found that 61 per cent of Canadian families with children paid more federal income taxes after the federal changes. Put simply, not only do low-income families pay taxes, but they now pay more taxes than before this government’s reforms.

And these analyses do not include the tax increases for the Canada Pension Plan that began in 2019 and will continue for the next six years.

The government’s response, and the response of many advocates for the government, has been to change the goal from lower taxes so families retain more of their own income to a different goal where families are better off due to income transfers from Ottawa. This is a fundamental shift, since it moves away from people keeping more of their own income and the incentives imbedded in such a policy to where people are more dependent on transfers from other Canadians for their improved well-being.

The prime minister’s comments indicate he has a lack of understanding of Canada’s tax system, and more worrying, that he doesn’t understand the implications and effects of his own government’s tax changes. In reality, a majority of low-income and middle-class Canadians are paying higher taxes because of his government’s reforms.

Think ahead to spring All-America Selections. A non-profit organization tests new cultivars before they are released. Yes, I know the blooms in the pictures are the perfect ones and the reality the plants in an ordinary garden don’t often perform the same way. Still, they look so beautiful in the Peggy Hasein pictures who can resist.

One of this year’s choices is a wave petunia named Wave Carmine Velour. Wave petunias are not new and usually make their way into many hanging baskets but the name Carmine Velour sounds exotic.

Something that is a must have.

names of the plants alone make them hard to resist. Red on Chocolate begonia. Baby Rose nasturtium. Big Duck Gold marigold. And the descriptions are equally enticing. “. . . deep bronze leaves overtopped by masses of contrasting, vibrant red flowers�; or “. . . compact and mounding with plenty of two inch rose-coloured flowers set off against dark-green leaves�; and �. . . large golden yellow plump flowers that bloom enthusiastically from summer to frost.�

It isn’t only flowers that are highlighted by the organization. Vegetables take centre stage too.

The Fire Fly tomato has “masses of sweet, bright yellow, one inch round tomatoes.� Probably very tasty as well although the description doesn’t say.

The Sparky tomato is red and yellow striped and has lots of flavour.

It has what is called an extended shelf life meaning the fruit will keep a while

on the counter without losing flavour or quality.

There you have a few examples of the selections that have been chosen for this year. There are many others but that would mean a 3,000 word column just telling you about them all.

As I make my choices I hope the weather co-

operates and the plants love the space I put them in so they bloom as great as the pictures in the catalogue. In some areas the selections can be viewed at designated gardens.

As for the lily catalogue, I order every year and you would think by now that I would have enough lilies. However, each year there seems to be one or two varieties that catch my eye and I think I “have� to have. The one on this year’s cover is creamy white with deep burgundy in the centre.

Surely, I have a spot somewhere for such a fine specimen.

I may as well warn the readers now. This column is for gardeners.

At the time of writing this column the temperatures are cold, very, very cold: -38 according to the weather app. The only bright spot is that a catalogue from The Lily Nook landed on my desk.

The month of February is when gardeners start making plans for upcoming season. Seed catalogues appear in the mail. Notices are sent for gardening shows. Even The Farmers Almanac sends notifications.

At a time when everyone is hunkering down in their house trying to keep warm, this is perfect to get out your blanket, put on your warm socks and make a nice cup of tea. Time to settle in and peruse this year’s offerings.

Y.T. doesn’t know his family history about our long past! When we were Vikings or builders of the Ark, but he will never forget the lines he read in the book “Treasure Island” and the grave of that Tahiti island in the Pacific, will always be remembered since he read it when he was 10 years old or so! Mebbe in the far past we were mariners. A lot of people from England were...

So I ordered a book on “Boat Building!”

Among other things the book said: “... for those raised on the Prairies, this is not a “Conductive enterprise”.

Conducive!? One has to have a university education to follow that rule?

The big north room of our house wasn’t finished yet so Y.T. decided to build his first boat there!

We moved a few things back and settled a couple of saw-horses in the middle! A long bent tree sawed lengthwise (laboriously) made the reel and Jim and I worked out there in our spare

time. (I must warn young husbands not to build their boats in their front rooms!)

But, bit by bit with lots of carving and sawing we sat back and admired our first home-made boat, which we christened the “Phyllis D”, after the lady of the house – my wife, hoping that her name would make our mess more acceptable (women like neat front rooms!).

First, in order to get it outside we tried the front door! Uh, uh! Phyllis was downtown. We tried every window in the house but no! They were all just a little to small to accommodate our boat. We widened one of the windows a bit and finally let the boat down on a bed of flowers that she had planted! Whew!

Phyllis (as usual) said very little, but she must have seen out tracks!

During the summer Y.T. and the boys used it on Eagle Creek. How wonderful it was to drift and paddle past the overhanging willows and small birds, which seemed a little surprised!

It was a nice summer but fall came too soon. One of the locals borrowed it to hunt geese and never brought it back! When I asked him why, he just told me that one day he would.

Some time later, we heard of a boat on the north shore ... full of bullet holes!

Later that winter one of the boys attended a skating party out on the lake north of town, and reported that they had gathered around a small campfire made from old boards broken off of an old busted up boat, and that some of the ashes had contained a few screws that were made of brass!

“So long” for the “Phyllis D”, eh? But, although we didn’t know it then, there were a few more boats to come!

Mebbe that “conducive” word was right, eh?

New Horizons Activities

by Chasity Braitenbach Hello from New Horizons! With this polar vortex lately we’ve had low attendance at some of our regular activities.

Hopefully it starts to get warmer soon!

This month our Birthday potluck had an attendance of 23 people and the entertainment for the day was card bingo with plenty of prizes. The winner of the half-n-half draw was none other than yours truly! (Chasity) We had an exciting Valentine’s themed Kaiser and Cribbage card tournament on February 15 with players from Unity, Wilkie, Landis, Rosetown, Perdue and Asquith. We had a total of 52 players in attendance! It was a full house.

The Cribbage winners were as follows: in 1st place was Bill Moon with a grand total of 706, 2nd place

was Monique Carruthers with a grand total of 702, 3rd place was Carol Grates with a grand total of 696, and fourth was Bob Carruthers with a grand total of 692.

The Kaiser winners were the following: in 1st place was Marie Schwebius with a total of 228 points, 2nd place was Marie Roesch with 214 points, 3rd place was Jim Tapp with 208 points and 4th was Joe Sarrasin with 200 points.

Prizes were donated from various businesses around town as well as cash prizes were awarded. Angel food cake was served after the tournament. I think it is safe to say that this year’s card tournament was a huge success.

World market demand is strong and is trending upward, and that should be good news for Canada.

But what would an outbreak of African swine fever in Canada do to the industry?

If we remember back to 1993 when the first case of BSE in recent time was discovered in Canada, the reaction of world markets was a swift closing of access. That left Canada with a glut of beef and a domestic market too small to effectively eat the problem away.

The beef sector, starting with producers lost hundreds of millions.

The world market for pork does have one major difference. China has the largest herd of pigs of any country, but because it also consumes most of the production domestically, its exports are limited. And, China has ASF. According to a Janu-

ary story from Reuters, “China has culled 916,000 pigs after around 100 outbreaks of African swine fever in the country”, and “the disease continues to spread to new regions and larger farms.”

The likelihood China closes borders is less likely than was the case of almost every country when BSE hit.

Also, unlike BSE, there is not the fear of ASF passing to humans, so reactions should an outbreak occur will be related to protecting a country’s domestic pig herd as the disease is deadly, and without a vaccine.

That said ASF could become a political pawn as well, used as a way to impact trade with certain countries for politically rather than health motivations.

For the pork sector, the disease will certainly be a cloud on the horizon to keep a very close eye on.

Canoe Narrows residents fined more than $15,500 for illegal sale of fish In a Canoe Narrows courtroom, two local men were recently fined more than $15,500 for numerous violations under The Fisheries Regulations.

Richard Desjardin, 63, pleaded guilty to three counts of marketing fish without a licence, commercial fishing without a licence, fishing in a closed area and obstruction. Desjardin was fined a total of $14,500 and had his truck forfeited to the Crown.

Following an earlier trial, Donald Iron, 60, was found guilty on three counts of illegally selling fish and three counts of selling fish without a licence. He was fined a total of $1,080. Four individuals were originally charged with various fish trafficking charges, but the charges against two

of the accomplices were stayed when Desjardin accepted responsibility.

In 2016, Ministry of Environment conservation officers from Beauval received information that two individuals were illegally selling fish.

Undercover officers were able to purchase fish from both individuals, with one selling a significant amount more than the other. Officers purchased more than 200 walleye from the two men, who were not licensed commercial fishermen or licensed to sell the fish.

In the 1970s and 80s, walleye populations in Canoe Lake crashed and took years to recover. As a result, extra efforts were taken to curb the unlawful trafficking of fish from

Canoe Lake.

An area of Canoe Lake is closed year-round to all fishing to protect the walleye spawning ground. This closure has been in effect for more than 20 years and is fully supported by Canoe Lake First Nation. The majority of the fish in this investigation were unlawfully taken from this closed area.

New-look foursomes hoping for Brier success An off-season game of curling musical chairs has paid off for at least three Canadian men’s teams as the 2019 Brier approaches this weekend.

It was similar to baseball’s free agency frenzy, as a number of teams splintered, a couple of top skips went on a recruiting mission and everyone involved was hoping to find the magic brew that would eventually cook up a berth in the Olympic Curling Trials in 2021.

The race starts March 2 in Brandon, where only about a half dozen of the 16 teams have a legitimate chance to win the Brier, and boost their confidence as they move toward a berth in a select field of nine teams vying for a berth in the Beijing Olympics in 2022.

Kevin Koe’s team from Calgary, ranked No. 1 in the world, did a 50 per cent remake, picking up second Colton Flasch from Steven Laycock’s rink from Saskatoon and BJ Neufeld from Mike McEwen’s foursome, which completely disintegrated. The McEwen crew went in four differ-

ent directions — McEwen, a perennial Brier contender, joining forces with fellow Manitoban Reid Carruthers; lead Denni Neufeld joining Jason Gunnlaugson’s rink; and second Matt Wozniak taking early retirement. McEwen and Carruthers had met in the two previous Manitoba finals, each winning once, but were tired of beating their heads against each other.

Another free agent of note was Laycock, who made it to the Brier seven times as the Saskatchewan representative, but always came up short.

When he got the chance to throw third stones for Jim Cotter of B.C., another Brier non-winning regular, he jumped at it.

So after all the provincial playdowns were finished, how did the musical chairs play out? Koe won in Alberta, bouncing back from a couple of early losses to beat Ted Appelman in the final.

Prairie Women on Snowmobiles made a stop in Asquith on their 2019 Mission. On Thursday, February 7, the group pulled into Asquith.

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t cooperating so they had to trailer their

sleds rather than ride in.

An afternoon coffee stop was held at the Asquith Hotel which have them a chance to meet and visit with community members. All proceeds from the ride went to the Canadian Cancer Society

Some of the highlights of Dad’s life included his 40 year marriage to our Mom; his travels in the late 1970s to Australia, South Africa, Fiji, New Zealand and Egypt; his nine healthy grandchildren and being so blessed to spend so much time and create such amazing memories with them; his love of farming, his love for his community, his church and the Knights of Columbus. Dad was an avid volunteer and recognized blood donor and each year anticipated the family camping trip and fishing trip with his sons.

Dad -- you are an example to all of us what a true gentleman, husband, father and Papa should be. You were always so very generous. We will make sure to tell baby Jax and the other grandkids what an exceptional man you are. Thank you for everything you’ve given us -- we will miss you very much.

Dad’s Prayers were held on February 10, 2019 and his Mass of Christian Burial was held February 11, both from Our Lady of Fatima Church, Landis, Sask.

Interment followed in Landis Cemetery.

Joan DOLAN March 12, 1932 - January 25, 2019 Joan Dolan of Perdue, Sask. passed away peacefully on January 25, 2019.

Joan (nee Kempster) was born March 12, 1932 in Ottawa, Ont. She married Lester Dolan in 1951 and settled in Fitzroy Harbour, Ont. Joan and Lester had five sons, Bob, Paul, Pete, Mike, Eric and granddaughter, Connie.

After Lester’s sudden death in 1975, Joan relocated the family to Perdue, Sask. She then spent may years in her community with her partner, Harold until his passing in 2016.

Over the years, Joan’s family grew to include grandchildren, great grandchildren, and even great great grandchildren. Joan took particular enjoyment in spending time with family, travelling, crocheting, baking and various other hobbies. In her later years, she liked activities with her friends at the New Horizons Centre in Perdue.

Joan was predeceased by her parents, Chris and Bessie; brothers, Jack, King, and Bill; husband, Lester; grandson, Brian; daughter-in-law, Peggy; and common-law partner, Harold.

She is survived by her children, Bob (JoAnne), Paul (Sandy), Pete (Debbie), Mike, Eric (Chris), and Connie (Ken); grandchildren, Sherry (Marc), Corey (Kelsey), Lindsay, Geoff, Diane, Robbie, John, Ethan and Josh; great-grandchildren, Anna, Colleen, Justin, Andreya, Grace, Kayleigh, Zaydin, Zander, Ariana, Alyssa and Theo; great-great-grandchildren, Lucas, Deakon, Quinn and Kayla.

Eat your way through Portugal One of the biggest influences of my career, and what I enjoy the most, is the inspiration and interaction of people.

To put it simply, we all have taste buds and eat food everyday, so we have a common denominator that we can connect on and relate to.

However, for me, it goes beyond that. Food is life in so many ways, and I find it brings out the best in people and thus gives me a window of opportunity to experience their personalities and what makes them tick.

It is because of this passion I have for people and food that I have become a Culinary Travel Host along with all the other hats I wear.

Normally my connection with a certain individual is quite short during a cooking class, book signing, or public appearance, so I truly look forward to spending extended timeframes with people. This gives us a chance to broaden

our shared passion and our connection with each other.

I have partnered with Collette Travel to bring you my next culinary tour scheduled for October 2019 and you have an opportunity to travel with me as we eat our way through Portugal.

Not only will you be immersed in Portuguese cuisine and drink, but also breathtaking scenery and fascinating culture.

So many folks first assume that a culinary tour is just about food and cooking classes, but for me and my tours it is much more than that.

I create adventures that take people to an area of the world to not only celebrate and experience cuisine, but also history, art, architecture, lifestyle and more.

Basically, to sum it up, we go to an area of the world to experience how they live.
