Silvernagle wins 2019 Viterra Scotties Provincial title in Humboldt A bundle of nerves for Robyn Silvernagle as it all boiled down to one last attempt by rival Sherry Anderson.

Denied in the past, Silvernagle excused herself from watching that final shot.

She just couldn’t watch.

And that may have been the trick as defending champ Anderson, with the hammer in the final end, couldn’t make that last shot, making Team Silvernagle the Provincial champ with the 6-5 win.

Sporting the best record over the weekend in Humboldt, Silvernagle had the momentum going into the championship game.

Losing only one game in the round robin to post a 7-1 record, Silvernagle and company still had to fight for every shot, every end, roaring back from a 5-0 deficit versus Chantelle Eberle, and a clawing their way back from 3-0 against Kristen

Streifel.

It gave them the character needed for their matchup against the Sherry Anderson rink in the final.

Both teams met earlier in the week, with Silvernagle coming out on top.

Silvernagle is no stranger to the provincial final. Last year, she lost to Sherry Anderson and previous to that, Penny Barker. Sunday’s win was sweet . . . really, really sweet for Robyn, Third Stefanie Lawton, Second Jessie Hunkin, and Lead Kara Thevenot.

Although curling out of North Battleford, Silvernagle was born in Biggar, and continues the championship curling pedigree of our area.

We’re proud of her, and know she will represent Saskatchewan well at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, Nova Scotia, February 16-24.

Prairie Women On Snowmobiles coming to Biggar Prairie Women On Snowmobiles will be coming through Biggar this February 7 as part of their Mission 2019 fundraiser for breast cancer research and awareness.

The campaign, which

has been running since 2001, also promotes safe snowmobiling, and has been visiting communities all over Saskatchewan, raising more than 2.5 million dollars in donations to support the Breast

Cancer Research Impact Fund of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Prairie Women On Snowmobiles also supports breast cancer screening and care at the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency. Every

dollar donated stays in the province, providing equipment for the cancer centres in Saskatoon and Regina, the screening program including the mobile bus.

This year’s mission begins February 3 in

Meadow Lake with Prairie Women On Snowmobiles embarking on a 1,400 kilometre tour over six days through 25 communities. Riders receive supprt from the towns they visit as well as from sledders who join along the way. It is an emotional journey for all as they share stories with breast cancer survivors and family members who have lost a

loved one to cancer.

Keep the hometown advantage in your community One of the first tasks to starting the workday morning (after putting the coffee on) is to check the emails. It’s surprising the number of emails a newspaper receives overnight from groups and individuals who want something published because “we reach the people.�

Tuesday morning there was an email from the SUMA office telling us all about the upcoming convention where representatives from cities, towns, villages, resort villages and northern municipalities come together. This year’s theme is Hometown Advantage: “the unique elements that set hometowns apart and the advantages of hometowns working together.�

I must admit I was a little surprised that SUMA would even consider sending a news release considering the fact that some of its members don’t value the hometown newspaper. In fact, one of the resolutions the members will be voting on this year is one that could have damaging results for many communities.

The Town of Pilot Butte has put forward a resolution to lobby the provincial government to review the requirement to publish public notices in the newspaper.

On the surface, given the fact that electronic methods of communication are widely used, this does not seem out of line. In fact, there is nothing in SUMA’s policies that indicate these methods cannot be utilized now.

What is disturbing is the fact that some municipalities do not want to publish public notices in newspapers.

To clarify, for the rest of this editorial, when I refer to municipalities I am referring to

town councils, and rural municipality councils collectively. They both collect tax dollars and have councils that are elected by the people.

Why should the taxpayers care about this motion? There are a number of reasons. Let’s consider legal issues.

Printing a bylaw notice in the paper becomes a matter of public record.

The dates cannot be altered. There is proof that sufficient notice was given in accordance legal acts. That is not true of electronic methods where dates can be altered.

Printing the notice means the council has done its due diligence in letting the public know about changes. If council only wants to publish these notices on their website then there are a number of people who will not be reached.

Sure, it is easy for employees to post it on either on the website or social media. But taking the easy (or lazy) way out does not mean due diligence has been done.

It is not the employees who need to be re-elected or who will be held accountable if something goes wrong.

For example, let’s say an individual wants to set up a manufacturing plant in town. There needs to be a bylaw change but it is only posted on the website.

You don’t own a computer or you have missed checking that day. The site goes down and is not fixed for a week. You have missed the deadline and six months down the road you wake up to a flurry of activity on your street. Yes, the plant is being built across the street and will radically alter your view. You have no recourse.

Or . . . perhaps this is the kind of person who

will not give up. The fight ends in a legal battle. Now, the municipality must prove the notice was published. But they cannot because the site went down, there is no printed record. Social media does not archive.

There is no proof the notice was posted. Now, the taxpayers are on the hook to pay out a lawsuit through no fault of their own.

Printing notices in the newspaper is a form of being open and accountable. It begs the question, why do councillors want to hide what they are doing? If it is such a big secret and there is the feeling that taxpayers will oppose the decision or become angry then, maybe it is the wrong decision. It is, after all, the taxpayers’ money.

Taxpayers should be very concerned with this.

Let’s talk a little bit about fake news. Social media does not verify its facts nor does it monitor posts. Anyone can post something on anyone’s page. That doesn’t mean it is true. In fact, in a study done by News Media Canada in partnership with Canadian Heritage, 50 per cent of Canadians trust printed local newspapers over any other form of communication. Even millennials believe newspaper ads are the most trustworthy ads.

This motion is in some ways misguided as it is gives in to personal biases. No newspaper can please everyone and no doubt some councillors have personal beefs with any publisher in any community. But those biases should not blot out facts. A survey done

by AdCanada Media shows that printed local community newspapers are the preferred local media. Forty per cent want local government

strong community identity. The more information residents have about their community, the better they will feel about calling it home. A local newspaper animates the community giving context to stories and bringing the community to life. Without that, the community is animatronic, only hearing what local government wants them to hear.

Electronic communication is here to stay. It is not going away. It is a complement to print.

But, it should never replace print.

Very true.

An effective marketing strategy is to include every form of media as people’s habits differ.

Some may prefer electronic while others prefer traditional methods.

Eliminating one or the other simply because of a personal preference is not effective. This is something all levels of government need to consider. It is important to communicate with voters using all avenues.

It is about the hometown advantage. A hometown that has a local newspaper has a

Brad Brown, colleague and publisher of the Quad Town Forum, makes this very valid point. “If there’s a discussion to be had with SUMA about the relevance of local newspapers in 2019, it should have started in a conference room, not with a potentially damaging resolution that was so quietly put forward.�

1938 by two chefs Ruth Graves Wakefield and Sue Brides. Wakefield owned the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts at the time.

Some claim it was an accident; that Wakefield added chocolate chunks to a recipe expecting them to melt making chocolate cookies. Wakefield, however, says that the restaurant at the inn had been “serving a thin butterscotch nut cookie with ice cream. Everybody seemed to love it, but I was trying to given them something different. So I came up with Toll House cookie.” She added chopped up bits from a semi sweet chocolate bar into the cookie dough.

Wakefield was also a cookbook author. Her first book Toll House Tried and True Recipes was first published in 1936. The 1938 version included the chocolate chip recipe -- Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookie.

As for the popularity there is a story to that as well. During WWII the soldiers from Massachusetts who were stationed overseas often received care packages containing the cookie. Of course, they shared and soon soldiers from everywhere were writing home asking for choco-

late chip cookies to be included in their care packages.

Wakefield received many requests for her recipe and bakers everywhere were making them. It was a nationwide craze. The cookie was brought to the U.K. in 1956.

Now for the chocolate chips themselves. Every bag of Nestle chocolate chips has a variation of the original recipe printed on the back.

The original recipe calls for “two bars (7 oz) of Nestle’s yellow label chocolate, semi-sweet, which has been cut in pieces the size of a pea.”

Today there is no longer any chopping of chocolate bars. The chips just come in the bag in pea size form.

In honour of this famous recipe the state of Massachusetts has designated the chocolate chip cookie as its official state cookie.

The inn burned down on New Year’s Eve 1984 and Wakefield died in 1977 but the chocolate chip cookie still lives on.

Boat Building Bash!

It would be a kind of shame not to mention the many small boats that we built when our first efforts ended up as a pile of ashes! “Treasure Island� had left its mark on me and when our retirement left me with nothing to do I ended up cutting slabs of wood in order to keep the shop warm.

I cut, hammered and sawed for what seemed years! They were enjoyable years though, and although Y.T. became a “Boat-Building Artisan�, he enjoyed the hours he spent out in the shop trying to be one!

The first two I gave to Eagle Creek Park, so they would let me golf up there, but nature sent a flood down the river and creek and they must have ended up near P.A. or even farther up the North Saskatchewan!

They were a good trade tho’, because I golfed up there quite a few times!

lis didn’t want to go to Mexico, so I gathered up some boards, lit the shop fire, and started in No. 4 boat! having made a few wrong cuts (which I threw in the shop stove) I started in a cut here, and a cut there (often wrong again) and behold!

Some time later I unveiled my handiwork!

No sooner had I painted it and put it out in the yard for everyone to admire, than a young couple drove in. “Will you sell your boat?� they said.

I had never planned to sell a boat before! I thought: “Twelve hours building the boat!� “How much will you take?� they asked.

I thought again (even in bridge, thinking was never my “long suit!�). “How much is it worth

to you?� I asked. “Well,� sez the guy’s pretty young wife. “We have a pond, right past the stable at our place -- my fatherin-law always called it the “slough�

-- and we’d give you five dollars for your Bob Mason boat, to ride out there on a moonlight night!�thought again (woa three times!).

Let’s see. “Twelve hours at 60¢ an hour is five bucks.â€? “Deal!â€? I said.

They took the boat in their truck.

and tried it! We got half way across when it sank!

That is why we named it ‘The Titanic!’�

I did some more quick thinking, then I gave her the money back!

Well you can’t win them all, eh?

When the “Titanic� sank, a lot of my boatbuilding enthusiasm sank with it! But the saw horses were still sitting in the nice warm garage, awaiting the next effort at building boats. So what do we do, eh?

We started in again making small boats. This time we put in a few features that we hadn’t tried before: A more solid floor, a heavier prow, et cetera and et cetera, until we had almost finished two more.

Aha! My long-time dream of floating down and around the “Great Bend� of the North Saskatchewan River became a little clearer.

I leaned them against a rail south of the apple trees and waited!

They are still there, mebbe. Unless some

of the family has taken them away. Mebbe Robbie Burns was right, eh? “The best laid schemes of mice and men!�... And here we are, in the Biggar Health Centre. New hobbies took over and the first thing I knew...

It had long been one of my dreams to build a boat, take it to Maymont Bridge, abandon my boat there, and get Phyllis to pick me up in her car!

But with the sinking of the “Titanic� it almost brought an end to that enthusiasm. Oh, I kept on building boats... Two actually, with stronger floors and a covered prow, where I could fit a small man.

I set them outside and leaned them against a pole for many years.

Well, the wind was right, but the dream kind of faded. They are still there waiting.

I’m glad that I made that 71 year tour with Phyllis though!

Dreams and ambitions are a sad thing I think, and I’m looking forward to seeing her again!

Spuds pruduction a sign of the changing ag landscape

by Calvin Daniels Even though I have covered agriculture as a significant part of my job for the past three decades, I am still at times surprised by the level of diversity in the sector in this country.

A case in point is the developing story of potatoes in Manitoba.

Like many, I have always thought of Prince Edward Island as the primary place in terms of the production of spuds in this country.

And, for years and years that has been the case.

But like wheat, long the primary crop on the Canadian Prairies giving way to canola in recent

years, it appears the potato crown is about to be moved from PEI to Manitoba.

Two things are converging to signal the change.

The first has Simplot spending $400 million to expand its french fry processing plant in Portage la Prairie. The larger factory, double the size of the existing plant, will be operational in early 2020, and that will signal a need for Manitoba producers to plant some 16,000 more acres of potatoes.

The additional acres won’t quite bring the overall Manitoba acreage to that on PEI where about 85,000 acres are

planted, but since yields are generally better in Manitoba the production crown will shift.

While the passing of the torch in terms of potato production is probably not hugely impactful in term of overall Canadian farm production, it does again help to illustrate how crop production can

change over time.

Such change is usually driven by advancements in crop genetics which allow crops to move into none traditional areas and be grown successfully.

That evolution of Calvin Daniels a crop is perhaps most dramatically seen in Western Canada in terms of

canola, once thought of as a crop confined to northern areas of the Prairies, new varieties have expanded its potential growing area across almost all areas of the region, and into the northern United States.

While genetics has pushed canola south, the same type of crop development efforts have expanded corn and soybeans north, the latter finding success into the area of eastern Saskatchewan up to the Yellowhead Highway.

$5.5 million in funding for livestock research announced Last week, federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Lawrence MacAulay and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister David Marit announced more than $5.5 million in funding for 34 livestock and forage-related research projects through Saskatchewan’s Agriculture Development Fund (ADF) and the Strategic Field Program (SFP).

The ADF and SFP are supported through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, a five-year, $388 million investment in strategic initiatives for Saskatchewan agriculture by the federal and provincial governments.

“Our government supports the growth of an innovative, competitive, and market-oriented Canadian agriculture sector,” MacAulay said.

“This funding will allow for vital advancements in agricultural research that will support new discoveries in our livestock and forage industries that will benefit farmers, producers, and agribusinesses in Saskatchewan and all across the country.”

“By funding research here in Saskatchewan, we’re not only committing to the biosciences sector, we’re investing in the future of our producers and agribusinesses,” Marit said. “ADF support is granted to projects that focus on areas of concern to Saskatchewan producers, and by supporting this research we’re investing in the future of our

industry.”

Support from the ADF is awarded on a competitive basis to projects that create future growth opportunities and enhance the competitiveness of the industry.

Projects funded through the ADF have gone on to create new knowledge and technologies that benefit farmers and ranchers, food processors and agribusinesses. From enhancing biosecurity, to improved vaccines, to breeding forage varieties beneficial for Saskatchewan soil, the projects supported through the ADF aim to improve Saskatchewan agriculture.

Under the SFP, funding is available for rigorous field level demonstrations and/or the evaluation of targeted practices and technologies, which will support extension delivery while advancing the objectives of the industry.

The initial project supported under this program will be confirming guidelines for beef cattle consumption of sulphate in drinking water. The research is being conducted at the University of Saskatchewan’s Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence.

“This project is exactly the type of work the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence is designed to support – tackling the challenges of the agriculture sector,” University of Saskatchewan Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence Director

Kris Ringwall said. “The research will provide clear and meaningful results that are sciencebased. Livestock producers, by incorporating the new guidelines into their operations, will be expanding their management options and, in turn, increasing the livestock sector’s revenue.”

The ADF projects supported this year will examine a variety of areas of interest to producers, including: developing enhanced biosecurity and animal welfare measures for livestock in transit by improving the design of the trailers they are transported in, determining if ear-tip necrosis in pigs is an infectious disease and monitoring post-fire recovery of forages on native grasslands.

In addition to funds committed by the federal and provincial governments, the ADF is also supported by industry groups and other organizations. Livestock and forage projects are also receiving more than $320,000 from the following organizations: The Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association, the Saskatchewan Pork Development Board, Alberta Beef Producers, the Saskatchewan Canola Development Commission and the Saskatchewan Forage Seed Development Commission.

“These investments will benefit the beef sector, and a prosperous beef sector will help grow Saskatchewan’s economy,”

Red-hot Flames eyeing Cup chase How dominant would the Calgary Flames be if James Neal wasn’t playing like Neal James, the 54-year-old overweight right-winger on an oldtimers hockey team in Saskatoon who sometimes goes over on his ankles and has trouble raising the puck?

The Flames’ Neal was signed last summer to a five-year contract worth more than $5 million a year, decent money for a proven — at least 20 goals in each of the past 10 seasons — sniper.

Guided by a new coach, Bill Peters, and led by Johnny Gaudreau, who has blossomed into an NHL superstar, the Flames are running away with the Western Conference and could be destined to bring a Stanley Cup to the Stampede City for the first time since 1989.

The Grey Cup already resides in Calgary; there’s room on the city’s trophy shelf for Stanley, too.

The Flames have been on fire all year, with 33 wins in 51 games at the

all-star break. They were the only team’to have five players with 50 or more points; the only one with four players with 20 or more goals.

And if Neal was scoring at a standard James Neal pace instead of his pathetic five in 49 games, those team numbers would be even more impressive.

Calgary’s wide lead in the Western Conference standings has been led by the second-best offence in the league and a solid defence led by Norris Trophy contender Mark Giordano.

When Neal signed in the off-season, many assumed he would flank the wing with Calgary’s top line of Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. Instead, Peters has linked those two stars with Elias Lindholm, a player Peters coached last year in Carolina. That Flames trio had 192 points at the all-star break, second only to Colorado’s redhot Nathan McKinnon, Mikko Rantanen and Gabriel Landeskog, who had 199. Neal, coming off

last year’s 25-goal season with Vegas Golden Knights, may be pouting about being taken off the Flames’ big line, and getting only secondary power play minutes. Or maybe at age 31 he’s just slowing down, content to collect his U.S. $28.75 million through 2023 as he goes through the motions.

Perhaps Neal will pick up the pace in the second half of the season. Or maybe he’s saving himself for a long playoff run, which the Flames are almost certain to have.

When the Stampeders begin defence of their grey Cup in June, the Flames might just be winding down their chase for Lord Stanley’s mug. It would be quite the Cowtown double

play.

by Paula Shortt Clark McNulty is one of the Nationals’ team veterans.

He has played hockey for 23 years, with 16 of those being for the Biggar Senior team. During the hiatus from the senior league that the team experienced, he played for a year with Kerrobert, four years with Dodsland, and two years with Perdue.

He has always played the same position.

“I’ve always played left wing and you know it’s tough to teach an old dog new tricks. My game was always shooting so … coming down the wing and shooting was kind of the thing that I got accustomed to.”

Clark grew up in Pike Lake. For those like me who had to ask where that was - it’s around Delisle.

He started in figure skating at the age of three, and then started in hockey a year or two later. He did both for a while and then stopped figure skating when he was around 9 years old.

He likes the competitiveness of hockey and the speed.

“My dad always said, ‘You have to have speed and grit’, so … I didn’t get the grit but … [chuckling] or the speed maybe…”

There is one thing he doesn’t like about hockey.

“I always taught my boys to be classy. So the Trash Talking – I’m not a big fan of that.”

When we discussed the key components that make a good hockey play-

er, Clark emphasized one key trait.

“Work ethic is the biggest one. That will carry on in life too.

I know I always use my b o y s as an example.

I push t h e m to work hard.”

A n d that work ethic is evident in Clark himself. In his spare time he runs.

“You know, I like running marathons. I guess I do all my thinking when I run.”

Now I know nothing about running, so I had to inquire what a “half” marathon was and how you train for it.

“It is 21.1 kilometers for a half marathon. So I run about 30, I try to run about 30 to 40k a week.”

Clark used to play ball as well, but a shoulder surgery laid that activity to rest. Now he spends the rest of his down time keeping up with and having fun with his boys ages 14 to 18. They are usually at the lake wakeboarding or knee boarding and such. And of course, with three busy sons involved in their own activities (two in hockey and one in golf), he spends a lot of time supporting and watching them play.

“My parents really put a lot of effort into us when

we were growing up and I look at how I am with my parents, how we get along, and I want my boys to be the same.

Clark really enjoys being part of the Nationals, and he says one of the things that made the team really gel was the new dressing room in the Biggar Arena.

“You know you come early to the dressing room. You hang out with the guys … and it wasn’t like that before.”

Clark was also excited for the chance to play on the same team as his oldest son Cruz.

“You know, I was more worried about him. I was excited … But as far as him and I go, we get along great, and I actually really enjoy it. That’s part of the reason that I still play.”

One of the things he thinks the team suffers from is the delay in the ice availability, as other teams get ice time anywhere from four to six weeks ahead of Biggar.

“Conditioning is obviously the biggest one [areas the team needs to work on] Our rink, our ice goes in so late in the year. We call it late because everybody else’s goes in so early you know. So we always have a slow start.”

The challenge for this year?

gest challenge. I mean Kindersley has a good team too, but Wilkie is usually who you set yourself up as who you need to beat.”

When it comes to ice time, Clark does have a few little rituals he adheres to.

“I’m not a big stretcher but I always like to do a little workout – skipping, different things like that.

But all my gear goes on right to left.”

Let it be noted that a cup of coffee or tea before the game is a necessity as well.

Thankfully, Clark has never been seriously injured playing hockey.

He claimed the odd tooth or Charley horse here and there, but mostly it is the culmination of smaller injuries collecting up and causing him issues. When I asked about the shoulder surgery Clark explained.

“I guess my shoulder was through ball and hockey. It just got to the point where I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t perform anymore.”

The Nationals have been very active in the community this season and an important part of that is the interaction with the youth in the area.

“I mean I know everybody’s got work and a lot of guys have families, but now they’re coaching, like we’ve got Mike Ferguson and [Jared] Barilla, they don’t have kids but they’re coaching novice/atom teams and these kids are coming out …”

“Hockey has sort of fallen a little bit in minor hockey in Biggar, so we got to kind of spice that up a little.”

“I look at myself. If

I wasn’t having fun – I wouldn’t be playing… So coaches have to make sure their kids, they get the right mixture of competitiveness and fun. And hopefully you want the kids to go all the way through… I just see how much fun I’ve had just playing senior hockey… and I’d like that for them.”

We talked a little about the NHL but Clark doesn’t have much time for watching games on TV. He did however, see a live game once and was not impressed with the “TV time outs.” He once again had to elaborate for me, as this was an unknown phenomenon to me. He believes that these “TV time outs” are very detrimental to the game.

“You know all of a sudden, just even in our games, all of a sudden you score… and you got the momentum going, next thing you know – TV timeout – and the other team can strategize too you know, and get

a rest, and put their top line out again. So I really think it affects it.”

When it comes to the local community support, Clark was a fountain of praise.

“The fans are great. The fans have really supported us over the years. I mean, we’ve had some teams that weren’t so great and you know, we still had fans. And now that we’ve been back for the last five years, I think they see how our community’s come together with the Nats too. Where like AGI has really helped out, and once they brought in and moved players in, you see Nat’s logos everywhere in town. So it’s special. Every time you see one, not only me, but my boys see one, they think of themselves too. Because the Nationals are right from Mighty Mites right up to senior hockey.”

Deb Kurulak

Deb Kurulak Deb lives in Biggar and will be playing the role of Tanya. She is excited to join the talented cast, chorus and crew for this year’s production of Mamma Mia! Deb has always held a lifelong love of music and dance which began with family parties and jam sessions.

She played french horn and toured with the University of Saskatchewan’s

Wind Orchestra. Deb has participated in the local productions of Fiddler On the Roof, Carousel and the Wizard of Oz. She also assisted to choreograph and co-directed many Biggar Youth Productions in their early inception.

After a hiatus, Deb returned to NCCP, with her daughter Kathleen, for the production of Sister Act. Deb would like to wish everyone in the show a wonderful run and hopes the community will enjoy a night out of great music and theatre.

Diedra Whitell Diedra has been involved in NCCP for the past three years. This is her first year on stage in Biggar! Diedra has been in many productions over her life. In high school, she was active in the Swift Current Comprehensive High School’s

Ladom Ensemble to take audience on musical trip round the world

The fifth concert in the Biggar and District Arts Council performance season will feature the unique Ladom Ensemble, Friday, February 8.

Ladom Ensemble combines piano, cello, accordion, and percussion in a unique blend of acoustic chamber and world music that is passionate, sophisticated, and wild.

The group met and formed in 2007 while studying music at the University of Toronto.

Individual members hail from Alberta (Michael Bridge - accordion), Toronto (Beth Silver - cello), Prince Edward Island (Adam Campbell percussion), and Ontario by way of Tehran, Iran (Pouya Hamidi - piano).

composer, writes original music for the group inspired by Persian and classical fusion but the Canadian spread of the group also reaches across the world and genres as their all-original repertoire incorporates inspirations from Argentinean tango, Serbian folk and dance traditions, Persian classical repertoire, as well as music from the Classical (Bach, Prokofiev) and progressive rock worlds (Radiohead).

Ladom doesn’t pretend to represent any one tradition, but rather expresses an authentically Canadian experience. Ladom’s musical identity is combined from many sources and reflects a beautiful new world with a Western classical toolset.

Accordionist Michael Bridge who is working on his doctorate in accordion at University of Toronto, brings his whole heart and ballooning talent to the Ensemble, despite being extremely active performing around the world, from orchestras to solo recitals. He has been named one of CBC’s “30 Hot Classical Musicians Under 30” and does over 100 concerts per year.

Sock-foot on stage, Adam Campbell passes around a twinkle-in-the-eye during performances, and always brings the bottles as part of his hand percussion toolkit! Cellist Beth Silver starts spontaneous jams in between takes, with playful sounds that can only be called ‘fiddling around’. Pouya

Hamidi usually emerges from rehearsals declaring, “They’re such sweethearts!” In performance and composition, the pianist has a deep love for the music, and a profound humbleness that makes bragging impossible, although warranted.

All are active, professional musicians in various contexts.

To date, Ladom has toured and enthralled audiences across the provinces of Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island.

TOWN OF BIGGAR, SASKATCHEWAN PUBLIC NOTICE

ZONING BYLAW AMENDMENT Public Notice is hereby given that the Council of the Town of Biggar intends to adopt a bylaw under The Planning and Development Act, 2007 to amend Bylaw No. 15-763 known as The Zoning Bylaw.

INTENT & REASON The proposed bylaw will amend section 4.17.1 Residential Districts by allowing accessibility ramps to encroach into any yard requirements.

PUBLIC INSPECTION Any bylaw may be inspected by any person at the Town Office in Biggar, Saskatchewan, Monday through Friday, excluding statutory holidays, between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Copies of the bylaw are available to persons at a cost of $2.00.

PUBLIC HEARING Council will hold a public hearing on the 12th day of February A.D., 2019 at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Town Office in Biggar, Saskatchewan to hear any person or group that wants to comment on the proposed bylaw.

COUNCILS PUSHING FOR LESS TRANSPARENCY Proposed resolution could mean the public will not be informed about public notices Some town and city councils in Saskatchewan would like to end the practice that requires public notices to be published in community newspapers. Instead, they want you, the public, to rely ONLY on their websites and on electronic social media or emails to inform you. This means it will be up to you to regularly go and check to see if there is anything new you need to know before it is forever removed from public display.

Publishing public notices in newspapers is vital to the democratic process of a community.

In most cases, the newspaper is also the only printed record of history for a community.

Once printed, it can’t be altered, erased or hidden.

“Public access” does not mean “public notice.”

Making information accessible online does not mean the public has been informed. It is critical to keep public notices in the public record with newspapers. If not, then we open the door for the potential for government corruption, misuse of office and less accountability.

How will we know when and where to look for things like: • Street Closures • Land Use/Zoning Bylaw Changes • Preparation of Assessment Rolls • Buying and Selling of Public Lands • Notice to Expropriate Land for Public Use • Public Hearings • Elections/By Elections/Abandonment of Poll
