Prairie Malt sale finalized The largest grain cooperative in France is now officially the owner of Biggar’s Prairie Malt, November 4.

Cargill, who was the previous owner, made the original deal with the AXEREAL Group in December of 2018, who would put the Biggar business into their malt subsidiary, Boortmalt.

Boortmalt, created in 1927 in Belgium (currently headquartered in Antwerp), produces specialty malts for beers, whiskies and food. Company officials have said that there will be minimal disruption at the Biggar facility.

The Biggar Prairie Malt sale is one part of a larger acquisition, seeing Boortmalt taking control of 16 malting businesses from across nine different countries, doubling Boortmalt’s production to three million tonnes of malt per year from its now 27 malting plants on five continents.

Cargill said in December that it was ridding itself of all malting houses, preferring to concentrate on other food and beverage ingredients.

In turn, Cargill closed a malt facility in Jamestown, North Dakota last year, citing falling

demand for six-row barley. Boortmalt’s acquisition gives them access to North American production with plants in Sheboygan, Wisconsin and, of course, Biggar.

Yven Schaepman, Chief Executive Officer for Boortmalt said the takeover offers new growth prospects and minimizes risks, particularly those associated to climate change.

“It also allows us to accelerate the development of new malting barley varieties and to create new malts. With this acquisition, we are pursuing our primary ambition to become the best maltster in the world,” Schaepman added.

Prairie Malt was originally created in 1974 as Henninger Malting. It then was operated from 1977 to 1989 by the provincial government who sold it to Schreier Malting and its partner, the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool. Cargill bought a majority stake in Prairie Malt in 1998, taking full control of the Biggar operation in 2013.

The Biggar operation has the capacity to handle about 220,000 tonnes of malting barley per year.

Canada Music Week hits Biggar this Tuesday In its nearly two decade history, the annual Canada Music Week once again comes to Biggar this November 19 for two shows.

The yearly showcase of Biggar talent, also shows off the best of Canadian music with composers including Neil Young, Stompin’ Tom Connors and many more.

The Biggar Majestic Theatre will feature two shows, one at 12 noon and an evening concert

at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation and the concession will be open. All profits go to the Majestic Theatre.

Highlights for the shows will be a new group - the BCS Voices, emerging choral singers ranging in age from 2-6, and several family ensembles. Original compositions from Saskatchewan composers from Rosthern, North Battleford, Saskatoon and, of course, Biggar.

The noon concert will

feature the BCS Grade 1, Toddlers and Tambourines, as well as a variety of soloists and ensembles.

Canada Music Week is a national programme, partnering with thousands of musicians from across the nation. An initiative of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Associations, Canada Music Week is focused on bringing to the attention of the public the importance of Cana-

dian music, to support composers and performers of Canadian music, and introduce contemporary music to young Canadians. It serves to stimulate a keener appreciation and understanding of Canadian contributions to music.

Biggar celebrates Canada Music Week this Tuesday, November 19 with two shows: 12 noon and 7 p.m. Admission by donation.

The Johnny McCuaig Band is the third concert of the Biggar and District Arts Council concert season, this time at the Community Hall, November 22.

The Johnny McCuaig Band mixes traditional Canadian East Coast jigs with the modern power of radio rock music.

You’ll jump out of your seat to clap and dance along to the band as they rip through rocked up versions of old standards like “Ten Penny Bit” and “Patty’s Leather Breeches” along with some new modern rock anthems like “Here We Go” currently used by the Saskatchewan Roughriders as their take the field fight song.

Between songs the band reaches out and connects with the audience in their casual fun way that shows that they not only take their rock music seriously but have a great sense of humour too and know how to

laugh and engage with the crowd.

This bagpipe sensation has people groping for superlatives trying to define this “McCuagian Sound”. Try to imagine a band that can seamlessly blend and twist almost every style of popular music together.

Christmas is approaching. A time of good will and cheer. Peace among men.

However, when it comes to the relations between the federal and provincial governments it’s probably safe to say that will not be the case. Scott Moe and Justin Trudeau are unlikely to exchange amicable greetings of the season.

Because our Premier went to Ottawa to stick up for Saskatchewanians and had the door firmly close on his suggestions.

It seems when the Prime Minister talks about hearing the concerns of Western Canadians and working on solutions with them it simply means “do it my way”.

Alberta is now talking about establishing their own penion plan, pulling out of the CPP -- similar to what the province of Quebec does. That may even be a good solution for Saskatchewan.

Premier Moe is going to continue to promote the province and its interests particularly in the trade arena.

That illustrates the resilience of this province: don’t wait for someone else, do it yourself. No doubt we can market our own products; take care of our carbon emissions and still manage to maintain our way of life.

All without the help of a federal government who is deserting us once again.

Greek gods vs Roman gods “I need to escape”, was the email I received one morning.

It was my cousin which meant that she needed a vacation. I replied, “Where would you like to go? It’s a big world.”

After some research and back and forth emails we settled on Italy. Now that we have booked the trip we are getting excited and buying guide books and looking at tours and making plans.

It goes without saying that this is a country with a lot of history. One of the stops is Rome -- think Colosseum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Appian Way, the Vatican.

It seems Rome has a sculpture on every cor-

ner much like Vancouver has a Starbucks. There are pagan sites as well as religious landmarks to see.

So, just what is the difference between Greek gods and Roman gods?

It is easy to get them mixed up which only serves to add to the confusion. When you think of the most powerful god the first one that comes to mind is Zeus. He is a Greek god, the most powerful Roman god is Jupiter.

Greek culture came first. About a millennium before the Romans. It was when the Romans captured the Hellenistic regime that the adopted the idea of gods. They changed the names with

Ceres, Minerva, Diana, the exception of the god Mars, Apollo, and Venus. of music and poetry -The Romans tended Apollo. to name their gods Greek gods are: Zeus, after stars or planets.

Greeks concentrated on words and beauty based on the mortal and his deeds. Roman gods concentrated on action and practicality.

Roman gods are defenders of justice, protectors on humankind and its rights. It all sounds righteous and saintly but in reality the Romans were depraved, violent and very unfair.

Take, for example, the story of Medusa who was raped in Minerva’s Temple by Neptune and was transformed into a hideous beast. There are numerous other incidents in which violence

occurs yet the Romans consider their gods to be fair and kind.

Ares and Mars: Ares is the Greek god of war.

He is the rebel of the Pantheon (which will be one of the sites to see).

He was strong, arrogant and enjoyed bloodshed.

Mars was the god of war, agriculture, fertility for the Romans. How the Romans linked war, agriculture and fertility to one god is a mystery to me. Mars is the protector of Rome and has more respect than Ares.

There are many parallels between the two cultures yet many divisions.

Hopefully I can keep them straight when visiting various archaeological sites next year.

There was dew on the early morning grass when it pulled into the Regina fair grounds just behind the big Grain Show Building, and the only noise we heard was the grumbling of some guy who had expected a huge welcoming party!

We didn’t have long to wait! We were marched into the big building to where hundreds of people had gathered in secret - a wonderful homecoming!

Y.T., not wanting to worry his folks about going to fight the Japanese forces in the Pacific, had written a few letters home, and asked a friend of his to mail one every week. So there was certainly no one in that crowd to greet him!

There was a radio newsman though, who asked Y.T. a few questions which I am sure no one remembers!

Later on that same day a whole bunch if us were crowded into an old sleeping car and sent to Saskatoon. If I remember right, we talked all night until we arrived in Saskatoon, lunched in the basement service centre of the old station, and at 5 p.m. jumped on the train and headed for Tessier. One of our old neighbours who happened to be at the station, drove me home and let me off at the foot of the lane!

Mebbe one of the real benefits of Y.T. scribbling this down is that when he gets old and forgetful, he can read about it again and relive the next little while.

The folks somehow kept the farm going while Walt and I had been away, all the time knowing that they might never see us again. Everyone seemed to be overjoyed that we had returned and they sure made us feel more fulfilled than when we had left years before!

But all this has been only our side of the story! All though the penny-pinching, “make do with what you’ve got” toughest times in Saskatchewan, our parents had cared for and taught us that it is the consideration of others that really counts in life! And all through those rough years, although they had little else, they had prided themselves about

their three sons. In the very worst of economic times they had helped them to grow to be the right-loving men most people admired. And then watched as some of them went thousands of miles away to fight in a

war that few of us understood!

How about them?

We were glad to be home and Y.T. knew how glad we were! But we didn’t really understand how they must have felt until, years later, Phyl-

lis and Y.T. watched our children go.

So here we are (in 2019 A.D.) scribbling a few lines about an attitude that the reader already has - or should have!

After all, we do come from Saskatchewan, eh?

Social Media minefield While there is much that is positive about social media in terms of staying connected with friends, or being in touch with like-minded people in terms of hobbies and interests, it is far from an ideal medium for news about happenings in our world.

Far too quickly discussion can become little more than rhetoric, hyperbole, and outright nonsense. Wading through the straw to find the kernels of truth and fact can be a tiring process that frankly is often not worth the effort.

We may live in a time that affords us the greatest access to information ever, but it does not assure us of its accuracy.

The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held October 15, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Alan Boyle, Penny McCallum, Kevin McNicholls, Kirk Sherbino, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Devon Ambrose from Solarcor Energy Inc. came to discuss the SaskPower Net Metering Program and the Town’s involvement with the program.

Council resolved that the following financial reports for September, 2019 be accepted as presented: Bank Reconciliation; Statement of Financial Activities.

Council resolved that the General Accounts Paid in the amount of $59,862.88, and the General Accounts Payable in the amount of $48,524.39, be

approved.

Council resolved that the following correspondence be accepted for Council’s information and filed: Biggar Library - September 30, 2019 Minutes; Landfill Report -Third Quarter 2019; Biggar and District Credit Union - Sidewalk Blockades; Cargill Change of Ownership; Steve Poirier - Property Concerns; Carbon Tax Totals 2019.

Lawyers and law students make contributions to war effort During WWI, lawyers from across Canada gave up their practices and law students from across Canada put their aspirations of becoming lawyers on pause, to enlist for service overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Over 550 of those lawyers and law students were killed or died of wounds or causes attributed to their service. Many others came back either physically or mentally scarred.

The situations was no different in Saskatchewan than it was in the rest of Canada. By December of 1918, no fewer than 77 lawyers and 158 law students from Saskatchewan had enlisted for service overseas. At least 14 of these lawyers and 38 of these law students were killed in action or died of wounds or causes attributed to their service.

The law students from Saskatchewan that enlisted included a future Prime Minister of Canada, a gifted amateur cartoonist and one of the most gifted hockey players of the day. Many of them were born in what became the Province of Saskatchewan, but others had come to the West to make a new life for themselves. All of them had dreams of becoming members of the legal profession that were put aside so that they could serve.

One hundred years ago this year, the war was over and the first of the cadre of law students from across Canada who

had gone overseas in WWI and returned were admitted to the legal profession. As joyous an occasion as it was for them and their families, it is likely that as they were being admitted and beginning their careers, they paused and thought of their friends and colleagues who were not so fortunate as to have survive the war to see their own dreams of becoming lawyers fulfilled.

Had the 38 Saskatchewan law students that were lost in WWI lived, they would almost certainly have been admitted to the profession beginning in 1919. The Law Society of Saskatchewan supported the war effort, for example, counting service with the CEF as service under articles and waiving examinations for law students who enlisted. In honour of their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families, the Benchers of the Law Society of Saskatchewan will grant honourary memberships to each of the 38 students-at-law and law students next year to those who were killed or who died of wounds of causes attributed to their service in WWI. The youngest of the law students being admitted was 18 years old when he died. Two were in their (very) early 30s. The rest were in their 20s, some barely. Many are buried in graveyards scattered across England, France and Belgium but 14 of them have no known graves and are, along

with tens of thousands of other Canadians, memorialized on the Vimy Memorial and the Menin Gate. All of them left behind families who loved them and felt the pain of their loss.

E. Patrick Shea, LSM, CS approached the Law Society of Saskatchewan with the idea to honour the law students from Saskatchewan, including those who were lost in WWI. Mr. Shea conducted research on his own and arranged for similar projects in other law societies. This project wouldn’t have been possible without him. As a former officer in the Canadian Forces reserves, Mr. Shea did it as a labour of love at no charge.

Mr. Shea is a partner in the Gowling WLG’s Toronto office, practising in the area of commercial law with a focus on the areas of bankruptcy and insolvency. He is also a licensed pilot and a former officer in the Canadian Forces reserves.

He is the secretary for the 48th Highlanders of Canada’s Regimental Senate, the RCAF Foundation and the Rangers’ Foundation. Mr. Shea has been awarded two Minister of Veteran’s Affairs Commendations for his work to commemorate veterans of WWI and WWII. Hoogeveen nabs Rookie of Year; Most Improved racing awards Local racer Hayden Hoogeveen has had a huge year, finishing up the season at the Saskatoon Stock Car Club awards banquet with Rookie of the Year, and Most Improved honours.

Hayden was awarded Rookie of the Year by points earned as well as being voted Most Improved Driver by fellow competitors.

Hoogeveen, Hayden has taken his talents to a higher level this year, graduating from the Bandolero junior classes to the bigger, faster Legend cars. Hayden was allowed to move up early at age 13 into the Legend class at Wyant Group Raceway because of his two years of Bandolero racing experience.

The spec series Legend cars are 5/8-scale replicas of cars from the 1930s and ‘40s, with engines around the 1,200cc size with roughly 140 horsepower, with adjustable camber and caster, ride height, spring rates, wheelbase, and gearing. Overall parity makes for exciting and competitive racing, putting the skill of the driver

as the deciding factor.

Legend cars are one step closer to the bigbore Late model cars, and have in the past featured current NASCAR drivers Reed Sorenson, Kyle and Kurt Busch,

Joey Logano, to name but a few.

Hayden finished his first season in the Legend class with a fourth overall in points earned.

Cranberry Pistachio Banana Bread Since my last column entry was all about quick breads, I thought it would be appropriate to share one of our family favourite recipes.

I am certain that we all have made a banana bread in our lifetimes, but this one embraces the spirit of the season by including cranberries and pistachio nuts.

Cranberry Pistachio Banana Bread Makes two loaves “The half slice of banana on the top of the loaf gives this loaf a unique recognizable presentation” 1/2 cup butter, room temChef Dez perature; 1 cup sugar; 1/2 cup dark brown sugar;

4 eggs; 2 cups mashed very ripe bananas (approximately 4-6); 3 cups flour; 4 tsp baking powder; 1 tsp baking soda; 1 tsp ground cinnamon; 1/2 tsp salt; 2 cups cranberries, roughly chopped, thawed if frozen; 1.5 (one and one half) cups shelled salted pistachio nuts, left whole; 1 yellow banana, sliced in half lengthwise.

1.) Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prepare two standard bread loaf pans by spraying with baking spray.

2.) Beat the butter and both sugars together

How to give back to seniors in your community

The strongest communities tend to be those in which members make a concerted effort to give as much as they get. Giving back to one’s community can foster strong relationships with fellow residents and ensure that everyone, including the less fortunate, is in position to live happy, healthy lives.

Certain people in a community may be more vulnerable to issues that can adversely affect quality of life than others. For example, the National Institute on Aging notes that, as men and women age, many are alone more often than when they were younger, leaving them vulnerable to social isolation and loneliness.

Such feelings can prove very harmful to their health, potentially contributing to problems such as depression, cognitive decline and heart disease.

Volunteering to help the aging members of one’s community is a great way to give back,

and such efforts can prove rewarding for both seniors and the volunteers who lend them a hand.

• Pull an extra chair up to the dinner table. Many a meaningful connection has been made and maintained over the dinner table. Breaking bread with a senior from your community is a great way to foster such connections and provide an avenue for social interaction for seniors. Seniors who live alone might not enjoy cooking for one each night, but they might jump at the chance to eat dinner with a neighbor and even help prepare the meal. Invite a senior over once per week, encouraging them to share stories about their lives as well as how the community has developed over the years.

• Help seniors manage their finances. Many seniors struggle to manage their finances, as laws regarding taxes and investing are subject to routine changes. A little

help in this area can go a long way for seniors.

Adults who want to help but don’t know where to begin can do the legwork for their aging neighbors.

Contact agencies such as AARP to determine if there are any financial assistance programs that can help seniors effectively manage their money and take advantage of age-specific perks, such as programs that may help seniors lower their energy costs.

• Offer to help around the house. Seniors who reside in single-family homes may not be able to keep up with routine home maintenance.

Neighbors who want to help can offer to mow the lawn, tend to the landscaping and tidy up inside. Keep an eye open for other issues, such as clogged gutters, that can be fixed easily but prove costly if they go ignored.

Helping aging neighbors is a great way to give back and build strong communities.

3.) In a large separate bowl add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, salt, and stir to combine. Add the cranberries and pistachios to this dry mixture to coat them with flour.

4.) Add the wet egg/ sugar/banana mixture to the dry ingredients and fold together until just combined – do not overmix.

5.) Divide the batter between the two loaf pans and smooth out until even.

6.) Place half of the yellow banana (cut side down) on the batter in each of the pans and bake for approximately 55 to 65 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
