Princesses, ghosts and ghouls, heroes and villains - imaginations in full flight as Biggar Central School 2000 and St. Gabriel School students paraded around the school on Halloween, showing off their costumes for the fun to follow.

Teachers and staff got in on the fun and, like the kids, were in full costume. The ghoulish schools were a pretty unique and fun place to be!

Biggar Minor Ball recognized by Softball Sask Biggar Minor Ball was recently awarded Softball Saskatchewan’s President’s Award for Association of the Year.

The recognition came at Softball Saskatchewan’s Awards Luncheon in Regina, October 26, and comes as a nod to Biggar Minor Ball’s strong program in our area and their recent hosting of the Western Canadian Softball Championships this past August 2-5.

“The award is definitely a huge group effort,” explained Andrea Harrabek. “This award was in

recognition of the amazing job our Western’s Committee, our minor ball club, our community, our Town of Biggar staff, and all of our volunteers did hosting Western Canadians this past summer.”

Harrabek added that during the recent Western Championship in Biggar, teams were complimentary - in fact jealous - of Biggar’s facilities, the organization and our community support of the event. The event has put Biggar on the map and opens the doors to other events

and opportunities, she explained, all due in no small part to the people of the community, the volunteers . . . everyone involved.

“This makes my heart so happy as my husband [Dion] and I absolutely love ball, and our facilities are some of the best we have ever seen,” she said. “We hope to keep growing our ball program, our coaches and our players for many years to come. Thanks again and a huge pat on the back to Biggar and to everyone that was involved.”

Last Post Fund gives dignity to Canadian Veterans

A non-profit organization is using this important time of the year to remind people of an important mission all Canadians can get involved with.

The Last Post Fund, ensures that no veteran is denied a dignified funeral and burial, as well as a military gravestone due to insufficient funds at the time of death.

The fund is asking

Canadians to help honour Canadian veterans - those who need funeral assistance or help with a gravestone.

As November 11 approaches, it is more and more, a simple donation that helps us all carry out the mantra of remembering.

The registered charity, established in 1909, since its inception has arranged for the funeral

and burial of more than 150,000 financially challenged veterans.

The fund also delivers an Unmarked Grave Program which places military-style gravestones for veterans who are buried without commemoration. Under the Last Post Fund Indigenous Veterans Initiative, the program provides qualifying Indigenous veterans with a military marker and traditional name inscription.

2019 harvest one to remember

Despite unfavourable weather, producers were able to make good harvest progress last week, according to the final weekly crop report, dated October 22 to 28.

Ninety per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up from 83 per cent last week; however, the 2019 harvest remains behind the five-year (2014-18) average of 96 per cent for this time of year.

Many areas received mixed precipitation stalling most harvest operations in the province.

Producers remain hopeful they will complete harvest this fall.

Harvest progress was made in most regions last week. The westcentral and northeastern regions are the most advanced with 96 per cent of the crop now

combined. The southwest and northwest regions have 90 per cent combined, the southeast region 88 per cent and the east-central region 82 per cent.

Some fields remain saturated with excess water, particularly in southern and east-central regions.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to strong winds and frost. Geese and wildlife continue to cause damage by feeding on swathed crops.

There also continues to be many reports of significant downgrading at the elevator due to sprouting. The crop is coming off tough or damp and is being placed into aeration bins and grain dryers. Farmers are busy drying grain and hauling bales.

To the Editor Now that winter is upon us there are days when I sit in my cozy room and watch the world through my window.

I am struck by the number of people who volunteer to make life easier for us old folks. There are the courtesy car drivers and the people who deliver meals-on-wheels.

After a snow event there is the good Samaritan (Gerald M.) who comes to the parking lot with

his blower and cleans the snow off all our vehicles.

And, of course, there is the staff who come early and clean our walkways as well as do little extras for us. These are the ones I see but I know there are many others that I don’t see.

I can’t help wondering if, when we were capable, did we do our share. And I am so grateful!

Part of my morning routine will sometimes involve reading my horoscope. It’s not something I do everyday or on a regular basis but every now and then I like to see what the stars have in store for me.

Let’s talk about the Mesopotamians and the Babylonians. It was with these civilizations that the practice of observing the stars began. Astronomers would observe the stars in the galaxy and the patterns which were formed in the sky. There were five wandering stars which, when combined with the sun and moon, formed the seven original planets.

The Babylonians introduced the concept of the zodiac. They realized that the sequence of

constellations, the sun and planets and how they moved through the heavens could be used as a yardstick. The zodiac links constellations with times of the year. Each constellation has its own link with the gods. This is a simplified explanation but astrologers and astronomers know how to read the charts.

The sky does hold a fascination for many.

Sir Isaac Newton once turned the sky into a calculator. To him the motion of the planets and gravity controlled everything. It’s all about the math and it started a new scientific approach to looking at the sky.

Violins inebriated . . . then stagger back to his cot and play his old violin.

I don’t know how expressive Captain Nemo was as he played the fine organ on the Nautalis, but Hank’s music made everyone in the hut realize that those strings were telling us all of a useless wasted life . . . his!

They tell me that Hank got killed on D-Day going ashore at Juno Beach, and again I don’t know, but imagine (and hope) that he had his old violin with him.

Many a great violin composer came from Germany and much of the worlds best music was written then. I often wonder what the man who shot Hank must have thought!

I don’t think that many, or any other instrument can express our feelings in a better way than a violin. Most of us hope that from here on in, all we hear are a few bars of “All is Well!�

Many and many a weekday night we gathered around the old radio during his program as he made wisecracks (even dumbcracks) to Rochester, and wondered if he would ever get around to playing “The Bee� on his violin.

I don’t know whether he would ever get around to playing it, but here we are 75 years later . . . and still waiting!

One of the guys who lived up in the hills used to pick me up now and then to accompany him when he played here or there, and we were always received quite well (my piano playing days were a lot better at that time) until one night he became the victim of a barstool and didn’t show, leaving Y.T. to deliver a much booed guitar solo!

Boy did he have enthusiasum! Also he could imitate the sound of bagpipes on his instrument, leaving some critics ashudder - but I liked them!

A fellow would feel that he had failed to complete this piece he never mentioned Hank. For more than one reason I won’t mention Hank’s last name, but we trained together in the army.

Hank was a tall, lean, moody type who always seemed to have a chip on his shoulder. Also he was a dedicated alcoholic.

But, he carried with him everywhere he went an old beat-up violin and balding bow that seemed so out of place in an army hut.

I don’t know what he told the Orderly Officers and other authorities but they let him keep it, usually hanging from his cot by a dirty old shoelace.

This week in Yorkton the Grain Millers Harvest Showdown takes place.

For a journalist who got his start primarily writing about all things agriculture, after having grown up on a small mixed farm, it always feels like I am very much in my element attending the event.

The summers of my youth were spent showing livestock at summer fairs, but through the years there was a shift to big fall events.

Where once only the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto existed, a trip east on a train when I was 12 still a treasured memory, Canadian Western Agribition sprung up in Regina. The birth of Agribition was huge in terms of marketing purebred livestock genetics in the west, and my Dad and I showed there for the first decade or so.

The success of Agribition helped Farmfair in Edmonton, AgEx in Brandon, and smaller shows such as Harvest Showdown take root.

In the case of Harvest Showdown it is something of an anniversary event for me.

Michael, Hailey, Julian Biggar Bowl hosted the senior division of the Trio Challenge North Provincial Tournament recently.

There were 10 entries

from Saskatoon, Rosetown, Prince Albert, Biggar. Biggar’s senior team represented by Toby Pearce, Rose Smith and

Kaleb Carter and coach Dianne Misener placed fifth.

Bronze medals went to Eastview (Saskatoon); Silver, Canadian Bowling Centre (Saskatoon), and the gold medal went to Biggar: Julian Heimbecker, Michael Misener, and Hailey Boobyer, coach Melissa Raschke.

The event was judged by Marilyn Miller.

By Chasity Braitenbach Hello from New Horizons! We’ve been a hub of activity as per usual.

Our morning card players have been going strong and filling the building with laughter. The exercisers consistently have a good number of people that come out to keep in shape.

The Kaiser players have a good time , and coffee is always on.

On October 21 was Monday Kaiser at New Horizons. The winners

were as follows: in first place was Bill Fisher with 260 points, in second place was Ken Pearce with 250 points, in third

place was Isla Solanik with 233 points, and in fourth was Pat Turner with 228 points. The highest scoring game was played by Bill Fisher

and Ken Pearce with 96 points.

At Kaiser on the 28th we had three tables of three players each with the following winners: in first place was Ken Pearce with 251 points, in second was Joyce Colbert, in third was Ann Muc with 214 points, and in fourth was Pat Turner with 167 points. The highest scoring game of the day was once again won

by Ken Pearce with 62 points.

Bingo on October 24 was held in the basement

of New Horizons due to a Flu Clinic being held in the hall. we had a total of 12 players come out to take their chances at bingo. The winner of the half-and-half game was Gigana Knezevic and the winner of the blackout game wa Ken Murch.

By Paula Shortt So my first interviewee for this season is not just a newbie to the Nationals, but a newbie to Saskatchewan!

Mitchell Dilosa grew up in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia. So while he might be experiencing a little culture shock in small ways, he is thoroughly enjoying himself here in Saskatchewan. And at least the weather won’t be that big of a surprise to him.

Mitchell started skating when he was about 5 years old. It was mostly just him and his brother that played hockey in the family, but his brother played from a very young age and Mitchell wasn’t far behind. He started

by going to the family skates and then eventually moved onto a Novice team where he played through the league levels. He has mostly just played main level hockey and wanted to just have the most fun that he could He is another of many who enjoys the camaraderie of his team mates, saying his favorite thing about hockey is the bonding and being together with the other guys in the locker room and on road trips.

Mitchell answered AGI’s ad for workers, and he came out here both to work and have the opportunity to get on the ice. It doesn’t hurt

that his big brother plays for the Nationals either, so he had someplace to move to.

While he’s not on the ice, Mitchell keeps fit by jogging and working out in the gym. He also plays golf, soccer and softball.

Though he is not yet sure what position he will be playing with the Nationals (he thinks he’ll be a forward), he is looking forward to having a lot of fun and making some good memories. He also has plans to be here long term, so come out and cheer him on at the games and get to know him at our events. He’d love to meet you!

You know life is funny, one day you’re sitting at a desk doing some bookkeeping and selling a set of tires, and then next day sitting at a desk writing your first article for your newspaper.

Every now and then an opportunity comes into your path, some you disregard and some you look at. I have been given one of those opportunities and I decided to grab hold with both hands and take it.

First of all I would sincerely like to thank thank Daryl and Peggy for their commitment and dedication to our community and the Independent for the past 30 years.

I do wish them the best on whatever path they choose to follow from now on and I know they will continue to be an important part of our community going forward.

The Independent will remain to be Biggar’s community newspaper, it will be produced weekly and it will continue covering local news and events with all those awesome photos from Kevin. There will be some subtle changes as to content and look, but remain true in reporting stories of historical value.

Someone asked me about why I would invest into something like this, when there is all the social media around to take away from the paper. My response is simple, if a story happens and it gets on Facebook, Twitter, Snap Chat or whatever else is out there that story will last about 2 days if your lucky and then be lost in megabyte heaven and to never return, however if that same story gets in the newspaper it is there forever for all future generations to see.

A very nice young lady was doing a school project on how the Biggar Central School came into existence, she asked me if I knew something about that. Without hesitation I provided her with some past newspapers from back in 1997-2000 and she looked through those papers to find those answers that she was looking for and completed her assignment.

I don’t think she would have got that much information from social media.

We have a great community in Biggar and the surrounding area and I believe that newsprint is still very important and we want to share the stories that matter to our citizens.

We want and are looking for suggestions and we always have an open door so come on by for a visit and say hello.

COMING EVENTS

Broeckel, Gordon Robert passed away Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the age of 82 years. He was born February 23, 1937 and was raised in the Star City, Sk area. Dad has now rejoined his son Johnnie Robert, after 37 years they will be touring together again.

Gordon will be lovingly remembered by his wife Joyce, his daughter (Little) Deb, and grandchildren Bradley (Samantha) and Brendan.

He was also blessed to have a GreatGranddaughter Ingrid who always loved to go and see her Great Grandpa at the Home where he spent his last nine years. His brother Murray, and brother in laws George Bartley and Raymond (Jeanette) Hedman and numerous nieces and nephews will miss him as well.

He was predeceased by his parents, John and Florence Broeckel; in-laws John and Violet Hedman; sister-inlaws Carol, Gloria and Arlene and brother-in-law Arnold.

Please join us Saturday, November 9th at 2 pm to celebrate Gordon's life at the Perdue Complex. As per his wishes he will be laid to rest beside his son at the Perdue Cemetery.

Thursdays at Redeemer Lutheran Church from 9:30 to 4:30 pm, join our quilters or drop off material or blankets for quilts. Many quilts a year are made to send to refugee camps as well as pillow case dresses.

We welcome gently used sheets or tablecoths of firm weave, material from gramma’s stash that she didn’t get around to sewing; garage sales finds or old blankets you no longer need. Everyone is welcome to come and help. If you don’t sew, you can rip material and cut squares or iron.

Bring your lunch and help others in need. Stay tuned for the blessing and bundling in the spring.

Hard to beat the drama of a Game 7 Even the so-so sports fan pays attention to a Game 7.

Casual sports fans usually know who’s playing in a championship series - Stanley Cup, World Series, NBA Finals - but that casual interest turns to rapt attention in a Game 7.

So it was on the night before Halloween when Houston Astros played host to Washington Nationals in a Game 7 for the World Series title.

The oddity of the 2019 Fall Classic was that going into that winnertake-all game, the visiting team had, improbably, emerged victorious in all of the first six.

More improbably, visiting Washington won this Game 7, too.

Every sports fan has their favourite Game 7.

Mine dates me tremendously, as it goes back to Oct. 13, 1960, when I was a Grade 5 student at Fleming School in Brandon. Mr. Sytnyk was my teacher and I had some explaining to do when I showed up for afternoon classes about an hour late because of the Pittsburgh Pirates-New York Yankees Game 7.

In those days, World Series games were afternoon contests (10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Manitoba). Got home for lunch around 12:10 and was mesmerized by the enormity of the moment. The powerful Yankees had won three games by scores of 16-3, 10-0 and 12-0. The underdog Pirates’ three wins were by narrow scores of 6-4, 3-2 and 5-2.

My father, bless his soul, agreed with me that catching the last few innings of the ball game was easily as important as the first afternoon class of a Grade 5 student.

Then, Bill Mazeroski struck.

After the Yankees tied the game 9-9 with a pair of runs in the top of the

ninth, Mazeroski led off the bottom of the ninth with a Series-winning homer off Ralph Terry of the Yankees and pandemonium broke out in Pittsburgh and in my family’s west-end Brandon home.

Other favourite game 7s?

Leafs’ fans want to forget the Stanley Cup firstround Bruce Penton series against Boston in 2013, when the Bruins trailed 4-1 with 14 minutes to go, scored three late goals to force OT and then saw Patrice Bergeron win it in the extra period.

In the NBA, it’s hard to match Cleveland’s 93-89 win over the powerful Golden State Warriors, in Oakland, to win the 2016 title.

One final note: Of all the Stanley Cup games that have gone to overtime, only twice has the Cup been won with an OT goal in Game 7.

And both times it was a Detroit Red Wing - Pete Babando in 1950 and Tony Leswick in 1954.

That means it hasn’t happened for the past 65 years.

Maybe we’ll get that Game 7 OT drama next June.

• Jay Busbee of Yahoo Sports, on NFL officiating: “Technology has forever altered the officiating game, turning every disputed play into an episode of CSI: Lambeau Field.”

• ABC late-night funnyman Jimmy Kimmel, on Donald Trump’s

visit to Game 5 of the World Series: “Usually to get booed that much at a sporting event in Washington, D.C., you have to play for the Redskins.”

• Janice Hough of leftcoastsportsbabe.com: “Atlanta Falcons release kicker Matt Bryant, 44, after two missed field goals last Sunday. ‘If only they had given the young man a chance to get more experience,’ said Adam Vinatieri.”

• Dwight Perry of the Seattle Times: “The NFL

fined Chiefs receiver Tyreek Hill $10,527 for giving a trailing Broncos defender the peace sign en route to a 57-yard touchdown. So, it would’ve been $5,263.50 if he’d only used just one finger?”

• Perry again: “Celtics centre Tacko Fall - the NBA’s tallest player at 7-foot-5 - was placed in concussion protocol after hitting his head on a low ceiling at the team’s practice facility.”

• Janice Hough again,

on the 0-7 Dolphins playing the 0-8 Bengals on Dec. 22: “The Christmas turkey will be served early this year.”

• Former MLBer Ron Fairly, who died recently at 81, channelling his inner Yogi Berra during his broadcasting days: “Last night I neglected to mention something that bears repeating.”
