Block re-elected to Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek

Saskatchewan goes all Conservative

While Saskatchewan has taken on an all-blue Conservative colour, Monday’s Canadian Election still sees the Liberal Party in power, albeit with a tenuous minority.

Carlton TrailEagle Creek Member of Parliament, Kelly Block is headed back to Ottawa, clearly defeating New Democrat Jasmine Calix with 34,814 votes to 5,384. Rebecca Malo of the Liberals trailed with 2,015, the Green’s Dean Gibson with 857, Cody Payant of the People’s Party, 792, and independent candidate, former NDP candidate, Glenn Wright netting 355. Of the voter turnout, 44,217 of 57,601 registered voters cast their ballots in the 2019 election for Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek.

The big shocker was the dramatic fall of longtime MP Ralph Goodale.

Goodale could only garner 14,998 votes to Conservative Michael Kram’s 22,186 in Regina-Wascana - Goodale clearly thrown under the bus by the Ontario/Quebecfocused Liberal Party. As well, the northern riding of Desnethe-MissinippiChurchill River witnessed

one-term MP and NDP member, Georgina Jolibois, falling to Conservative Gary Vidal, 10,816 votes to 7,504. Liberal Tammy CookSearson netted 6,899.

BattlefordsLloydminster Conservative Rosemarie Falk soundly defeated Liberal Larry Ingram, 27,784 votes to 2,225, while Cypress Hills-Grasslands Jeremy Patzer for the Conservatives defeated New Democrat Trevor Peterson, 30,898 to 3,601. Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan Conservative Tom Lukiwski won 30,801 votes to New Democrat Talon Regent’s 7,394.

Neighbouring Alberta clearly was not in favour of the woeful Liberals, going nearly all Conservative, save for Edmonton Strathcona which went to the New Democrats.

Federally, the Liberals took 157 seats to the Conservatives 121, the Bloc’s 32, NDP’s 24, the Green’s 3, and one independent seat for Jody WilsonRaybould to Vancouver Granville, fallout from the Trudeau and the Liberal Party’s morally bankrupt handling of SNC-Lavalin.

Council Minute highlights The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held October 1, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Alan Boyle, Penny McCallum, Kevin McNicholls, Kirk Sherbino, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Council resolved that the following appointments be made for the year 2020 for the Recreation Board: Kevin Ellard, Michele Keith, Scott McMahon, Hailey Metz, Melissa Raschke, Hayden McMahon (Student Representative).

Council resolved that the General Accounts Paid in the amount of $295,243.55, and the General Accounts Payable in the amount of $54,164.82, be approved.

Council resolved that the following correspondence be accepted for Council’s information and filed: Great Plains College - Scholarship Reception; Flaman Investigations - Report; Bylaw Enforcement Officer - Rates; Susan Maguire - Biggar Cemetery; PIWIK - September 2019 Web Site Report.

Council resolved that the one tender for demolition of improvements

Council resolved that they advise Administration to enter into a three year agreement with Neptune Technology Group for the water metering program.

Council resolved that they agree to nominate Barb Barteski, Town of Biggar C.A.O., for the SUMA 2020 Meritorious Service Award, to be presented at the SUMA

Convention in 2020.

Council resolved that the request from the Biggar Figure Skating Club for a reduced rental rate of the Community Hall for their Craft and Trade Show, be received, and further that the club receive a 50 per cent reduced rental rate.

Council resolved that the request from SaskPower to construct power lines for CN Rail on CN property, be reviewed and further clarification is needed.

Council resolved that the final invoice No. 45291 from P. Machibroda Engineering Ltd. for 709 Main Street in the amount of $4,336.50, be approved for payment.

Council resolved that the Landfill Project update from Catterall and Wright be accepted as presented.

RCMP dealing with rash of vehicle thefts in Unity

Unity RCMP is warning people of a number of reported thefts of vehicles that occurred in the morning hours of October 17.

Unity RCMP responded to reports of three vehicles taken overnight, and numerous unlocked vehicles being rummaged through. It is believed that all the vehicles stolen had the keys left inside.

Stolen were a 2015 grey Dodge Ram pickup with Saskatchewan plate: 247ECE; a 2005 maroon Chevy Silverado pickup with Saskatchewan plate: 987JTK; a 2010 grey Nissan Altima sedan with Saskatchewan plate: 628LCR. RCMP are reminding people to lock their vehicles and not leave valuables in their vehicles unattended.

Unit RCMP also recovered a stolen black 2010 Kia Forte with Saskatchewan plate 666KMK, stolen on October 16 from the Town of Battleford.

The vehicle was recovered in Unity.

Anyone spotting one of the noted vehicles is asked to immediately report it to their local police via 9-1-1, and not try and approach the vehicle.

Action not words: that’s what is needed now While the election may be over the aftermath is not. There is no doubt voters in Saskatchewan sent a strong message to the Trudeau government.

In his victory speech the Prime Minister responded by saying he understands our frustration. Finance Minister Bill Morneau also gave assurances saying the message is “not lost” on him and spoke of reaching out.

All this sounds positive but as Premier Moe said we need actions not words.

So, let’s just say this to Prime Minister Trudeau and Mr. Morneau and the entire Liberal party: if you come to Saskatchewan you can’t hole up in Saskatoon and Regina and meet with a private group of party supporters and make claims that you have reached out.

We expect you to drive down Main Street Biggar (and other rural towns), get out of your car and shake hands with the people on the street. We expect you to listen and then act. Nothing less than that will be acceptable.

I was reminded the other day by a voter who said, “this is a place where a handshake still means something.” This is not Toronto or Ontario.

Many reasons to celebrate As I write this column it is a dreary, dull day.

For some reason a day without sun just drains energy from your being.

Perhaps that is because we live in one of the sunniest places in the world, yes, even in the winter.

Thanksgiving has just been celebrated. There was a news story about a football player (dare I mention it was a Saskatchewan Roughrider) whose truck was broken into. Some items were taken but this player commented that there was still a lot to be thankful for namely the fact that he was still alive and around to enjoy the day.

Thanksgiving is a feast where we give thanks for all the good things

in our life. While some might bemoan the fact that they could use more money (who couldn’t?) or that they don’t have all the material things that make life easier, there are a large number of things to be thankful for that don’t cost a lot.

One of them is family.

What a blessing they can be. Oh, of course there are bound to be heated discussions or disagreements but for the most part family can be counted on to be there when you need them.

Be thankful we live in a country with the freedoms that we have. As Canadians gear up for voting day there may be ways to make improvements particularly when it comes to governments,

I guess the whole point of

this column is that we just need to enjoy whatever is sent our way.

“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.”

Having said that, I must admit I am having a hard time appreciating the weather on this particular day. There must be some positive aspect of the overcast, damp and rather depressing weather. It just takes an extra special effort to find it.

Or, I can just resign myself to the fact that Mother Nature and I don’t always see eye to eye.

The Novelist false suggestion of eternal happiness is what causes much of the family instability that we know today (again I have no idea). Their so dramatic presentation of a circumstance that doesn’t really exist might lead us to feel that there needn’t be any hard times in our lives Bob Mason at all.

And so, while contemplating these effects of novelism, I hesitate -- not that somewhat dry pen, is incapable of scribbling a dramatic line. But because in putting out with some over impressive missile (let’s call it a novel) I am only adding to that attitude of social frustration that many of our thrill dedicated writers have already credited.

Our existence here on earth (at least to me) is a give and take thing that is a real part of nature. We are born (and all is wonderful), we die (and everyone seems sad).

The good and the bad and it has always been that way.

However, Mr. Homer came along and pointed out that some Ulysses guy was a cut above the ordinary fellow, and could face up to the Cyclops, Circe, the Sirens, Trinarcria and Calypso, survive and still come home to the beautiful princess awaiting him -- whew!

And this was some four thousand years ago.

The stone age types who painted on the walls of Lascaux cave in Southern France 25,000 years ago didn’t bother with a whole bunch of character invention. They portrayed life as it was.

Down through the thousands of years from pictograms, hieroglyphics, cuneiform clay tablets, papyrus and parchment to paper, radio and TV the line of sensible thought has changed almost to the point of

even capable of reading at that time, there seemed to be no lack of writers. Heck, not many of us have ever picked up a book by Homer, Aschylus, Sophocles and Euripides and read very much. (It’s all Greek to me!) But I’ll bet that those names were as familiar in those ancient times as many of our most famous authors are right now.

We fool ourselves, I fell, when we give out with the experiences of our lives as though “experiences� never have happened to anyone else.

Long, long before any of us had even shown up, there had been millions of people, led their lives, done their thing and scribbled their memories. So on the face of it, what can possibly be left to write about?

fantasy. Points of view have changed dramatically, until now, instead of everyone using their own imagination, we rely on other much lauded dreamers to build castles in the sky for us.

And so, it is decision time, or as Mr. Shakespeare mentioned some time ago: “To write novels or not to write, that is the question�. And, in the light of the above criticism, guess which way Yours Truly is gonna go.

There are millions of novels (I was going to say a dime a dozen; mebbe that is why some are called “dime� novels) but we only have one lifetime and, if anything, a guy had better report on just how it is handled.

We’ve had our good times of course, but we’ve also had some that were awful, and I guess telling about them both in the old L & T is the best we can be expected to do.

If these true facts of life are what we call important, the publication people have my (not so improved) blessing.

But, I’m afraid that, as a novelist, no one would ever believe any of this stuff anymore.

Heck, paper itself didn’t become popular in western Europe until around 1100 A.D. Although the Chinese (and Aztecs) had invented a kind of tree bark many years before.

The book also sez that, although paper had been made in the Orient hundreds of years previously, the process had been a closely guarded secret until the Arabs captured some paper makers in the battle of Samarkand in 750 A.D. So people started to pen their thoughts, which in a way, must have been a lot more convenient than preparing a piece of parchment or memorizing a poem.

For every line that you see scrawled in the humble writing Was born in the pen of me when I was working; fighting.

I’ve thought about this novel writing thing for a long time. And the more I think the more I realize how much it could take away from any impression that is made by the stuff I do write.

Y.T. knows that he doesn’t have to tell the reader (or anyone else for that matter) how tiny a fellow feels in literary history.

A Greek guy named Plato wrote some years ago: “nothing can be said now that hasn’t been said before� and to most of us, this is kind of hard to believe when one considers that the lone library of Alexandria had thousands of scrolls. They are sure apt to ask: “Can anything be written that hasn’t been written before?�

History tells us that the Alexandrian Library (on of the 10 wonders of the ancient world) was destroyed in A.D. 640 by the Arabs. However, it also states that the science-fearing Christians of that time also had quite a bit to do with its demise.

History also tells us that there was another competing library founded about the same time

by King Assurbinipal of Assyria. One of the big books that I have sez: “The Greek rulers of the Near East, during the Hellenistic period, became even more fanatical book collectors than the Assyrians (now part of Iraq) and as long ago as 2300 B.C., great collections of clay tablets in literal form, were gathered by one King Enhidinanna of Ur. So what chance has Y.T. got of ever writing anything original? Can anything (outside of scientific progress) be mentioned that hasn’t already been mentioned.

Sometimes it seems that we (at least my generation) have lost touch with progress, I dunno. And then again it appears to have lost touch with us.

So Canada needs to be more diligent than ever in keeping trade flowing as freely as possible to key foreign markets.

Generally, trade is best achieved seller to buyer on some direct level, but one should not discount the occasional influential hand of politicians.

It is after all, politicians who often muddy the waters of trade with sanctions, so having another politician sitting down to discuss freer access to trade is not a bad idea.

In that respect it’s hard to see a downside, at least agriculturally speaking, to Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe’s trade mission to Japan, South Korea, and Hong Kong, his first trade mission to these markets.

According to a government release, “the Premier’s focus was on expanding and diversifying access in the Asian markets for Saskatchewan’s food, fuel and

fertilizer.” Accepting that a release from government might be a touch biased, promoting those things Saskatchewan has to trade was exactly what Moe’s job was in taking the mission.

The mission involved more than 25 meetings and events, including the signing of 10 Memorandums of Understanding

by Saskatchewan based organizations to expand and extend the relationships that Saskatchewan has abroad.

An MOU is not a trade deal, but it is a solid foot-in-the-door.

“Japan and South Korea represent key growth markets for our food, fuel and fertilizer, but also serve as launch points into developing markets in the Asian region,” Moe said in the release.

It is to be hoped the initiative becomes the foundation for more trade, because that is what the farm sector relies on.

Many areas of the province received moisture last week, with the Moosomin area reporting 40 millimetres of mixed precipitation.

Provincially, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 19 per cent surplus, 77 per cent adequate and four per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 10 per cent surplus, 83 per cent adequate and seven

per cent short.

Some fields remain saturated with excess water, particularly in southern regions. Most crop damage this past week was due to lodging, strong winds, localized flooding and frost. Geese and wildlife continue to cause damage by feeding on swathed crops.

Reports continue of significant downgrading at the elevator due to crops sprouting. The majority of the crop coming off is tough or damp and is being placed into aeration bins and grain dryers. At this time, most livestock producers indicate they have adequate supplies of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed grain heading into winter.

Farmers are busy drying grain, hauling bales and combining when they are able to.

by Chasity Braitenbach Over the past couple of weeks at New Horizons we’ve had a number of events to report on.

At Monday Kaiser on September 30 there were three tables with three players at each table.

In first place was Ken Pearce with 252 points, in second place was Joanne Kral with 238 points, in third place was Pat Turner with 160 points and in fourth was Marie Roesch with 155 points. The highest

scoring game was played

by Ken Pearce with 58 points.

Our Birthday potluck this month was held a week early on October 7 due to the advance polls for the election being held in the hall from the 11th to the 14th. We had 26 people come out to celebrate this month.

Marg Irven was the winner of the halfand-half draw and graciously donated her winnings back to New Horizons, which was greatly appreciated. The entertainment for the day was card bingo and we had more than enough prizes to go around. Our

members with birthdays in October were: Bill Brown, Linda Dyck, Dorothy Honcharuk, Mabel Hoppe, Margaret Irven, John Kral, Johanna Lehnert, Wanda Malazdrewich, Marna McLay, Ken Pearce, Doreen Phillips, Eleanor Ries, Marie Roesch, and Bob Wardrop. Happy Birthday.

On October 10 we had 14 players come out to play bingo. The winner of the half-and-half game was Marie Roesch and the blackout game was tied by Joanne Kral and Moe Goring. Congrats to the winning players.

Let’s work together to keep our youngsters safe This Halloween, children’s safety is the focus for CAA Saskatchewan.

Safety for pedestrians of all ages can be scary, but on Halloween night, it can become a little scarier and more unsafe, considering the increased pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Here are a few Halloween safety tips from CAA: See and be Seen: Choose costumes that are bright at night and don’t obstruct children’s vision and hearing.

Trick or treating in groups is always a smart idea. It’s safer and groups are more visible to drivers.

When crossing the street, use designated intersections and crosswalks. Be sure to stop, look, listen and think.

Use reflective tape on costumes and have children carry a flashlight for easy visibility.

Use makeup instead of a mask to allow for better vision.

Put those mobile

phones and gaming devices away.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings.

Driving Diligence: If you are driving and must drop off or pick up children, make sure you pull over into a safe zone and turn vehicle hazard lights on.

Communicate with other drivers by using your turn signals. Make sure your vehicle’s headlights are on.

Eliminate distractions – put your mobile phones away.

Watch for excited chil-

dren walking or running as they may not be thinking about road safety.

When backing out of parking spaces or driveways, always watch for children.

Slow down to at least 10 km below the speed limit when driving through school zones and residential areas.

Avoid driving during peak trick or treating hours on Halloween night.

If you plan to party, put the keys away.

Always plan a safe ride home.

Dry ice and fog machines can help Halloween revelers create a smoky, mysterious feel, but each of these haunting accessories must be used with safety in mind at all times.

Dry ice Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide.

Dry ice is often used for spooky effects because it produces a vapor when it sublimates from its dry form.

This occurs after exposure to air and liquid that is warmer than the dry ice.

Because the temperature of dry ice is extremely cold, (-109.3 F or -78.5 C), people can suffer from frostbite if they touch it. People who intend to handle dry ice need to use tongs or protective gloves when doing so. Children may not understand the danger of dry ice, so they should never be allowed near it.

Dry ice should be kept in an insulated cooler and stored and used in a well-ventilated area, as the CO gas can sink to low areas and replace oxygenated air. High concentrations of CO gas may be fatal when breathed in.

If dry ice is used in drinks, it is important that no dry ice fragments are ingested, which can cause tissue damage as well as pressure from the buildup of the release of gas.

Fog machines Fog machines can produce a scary and realistic Halloween tableau. When using fog machines, it is essential that users confirm which solution is being used to

produce the fog. Many utilize a water and glycol solution that has been deemed safe if inhaled.

However, some people

may find it causes throat irritation. Some products use proprietary formulas, concealing the identity and proportion of ingredients.

Users should avoid these products unless they can confirm which chemicals

are being used and that those chemicals are safe.

Fog/smoke generating machines should be placed in locations where exposure to the concentrated smoke is minimal. The machines also should be used exactly as the manufacturer directs and not altered by using dyes, fragrances and other chemicals.

Fog machines can create many illusions, but they also can impede vision if the fog is too thick.

Therefore, caution must be heeded to prevent mobility issues due to the fog. Also, sometimes fog machines can produce a slippery residue, so users should be aware of this and monitor conditions around the machines.

Fog machines and dry ice can add flair to Halloween festivities if they are handled and used correctly.

Susie was born b bo orn on o October 5, near Outlook, 11948 948 n SK to Abdon Ab bdon and Ann An Bartusek; the fourth of five children. The family moved to a farm south of Duperow, where the children attended school at the Caputh. Later they moved to Biggar, where Susie completed her education at the Biggar Composite High School. After post-secondary education she worked at the Duperow Co-op where she met and married Ken Seidl in 1971. Years after, their daughter Cora-Lee was born and she started working at the Biggar Diamond Lodge. After 20 plus years her health forced her to retire.

Susie had a passion for flower gardening, where many hours were spent tending and many more spent studying what to plant the following year. She loved her time having coffee with family and friends, reading, traveling and bus trips to the casino.

Susie was known for her wit, infectious smile and her kind, compassionate spirit. Until her passing we had no idea how many lives she had touched.

Susie is survived by her loving husband, Ken; daughter, Cora-Lee (Hayden Strudwick) of Saskatoon, SK; sister, Claudette Clark; brother, Archie (Alsane) Bartusek; many nieces and nephews.

Susie was predeceased by her parents, Abdon and Anne Bartusek; brothers, Donnie and Wayne Bartusek.

No service as per Susie’s wishes.
