It wasn’t exactly how the Biggar Nationals Senior Hockey Club wanted to begin the season but an exhibition game versus the visiting Delisle Bruins was a lopsided affair at the Jubilee, October 19. Although they didn’t have their full squad, the Nats did have some flashes that could make them a force in the Sask West Hockey League. The seven team league (Eatonia Huskies taking a one-year leave and the Kindersley Klippers coming aboard) will soon begin its regular season, with the Nats on the road in Unity, Nov. 2. Asquith and Wilkie make Housing Authority appointments Asquith and Wilkie housing authorities have made changes and reappointments to their boards.

Janice Klassen has been reappointed to the Asquith Housing Authority Board of Directors while Amanda Roth has been appointed to the Wilkie Housing Authority Board of Directors.

The two housing authorities are community-based organizations that provide daily management of housing units constructed and operated

under the terms of a federal provincial municipal cost sharing agreement. Asquith operates 18 housing units while Wilkie, 30.

“This local hands-on approach ensures that the Saskatchewan Housing Corporation responds effectively to the needs of each community,” Social Services Minister, Paul Merriman said.

Saskatchewan has a network of 260 housing authorities and more than 1,400 volunteer members who assist with

management of housing units throughout the province for seniors, low income families and persons with disabilities.

Persons interested in volunteering to serve on the board of directors for the Asquith or Wilkie housing authorities are urged to contact the mayors of their respective towns. A local nominating committee recommends board members.

Applications for accommodation are available from the manager of the housing authorities.

Canada’s climate plan is worse than no climate plan

by Aaron Wudrick, Canadian Taxpayers Association As a collective action problem that knows no borders, climate change can only be effectively tackled on a global level. This necessarily means that the impact Canada can have is unavoidably dependent on the actions taken by other countries. In particular, large emitters such as China, the United States, the European Union, India, Russia and Japan (who collectively account for approximately two-thirds of total global emissions) matter the most. It is also the reason that international forums, including the annual United Nations Climate Change conferences are central to coordinating climate change mitigation strategies.

The obvious problem, of course, is that these forums haven’t yet yielded anything approaching a sufficient strategy. The much-vaunted 2015 Paris Agreement contains no enforcement mechanism for targets, which makes it highly unlikely that they will be met. The United States – which alone accounts for 15 per cent of global emissions – has pulled out of the agreement altogether, while China (25 per cent of global emissions) may be able to hit them only because their agreed national target was feeble in the first place. This reflects the biggest problem with the Paris Agreement: national emissions targets were set such that even if every country were to keep its commitments, total emissions reductions would still fall far short of the amount needed to sufficiently limit global temperature increases.

No less an authority than the United Nations itself has sounded the alarm, releasing a report in early October that suggested a carbon tax of up to US$5,500 per ton ($7,183 CDN) may be necessary to limit temperature increases to 1.5 degrees. If that sounds extreme, it’s because it is.

A tax of this size would work out to an eye-popping $834 of carbon tax on a 50-litre gas fill-up, or around 143 times higher than the maximum $50 per ton the Trudeau government plans to impose on noncompliant provinces by 2022.

But surely doing something is better than nothing, critics insist. We can’t just sit on our hands. But to be blunt, that depends on whether what we do will make any difference, in which case sitting on our hands might be as good a pastime as any.

Applying the same reasoning as in NAFTA, the test for Canada’s climate plan should be whether the benefits

to Canada outweigh the costs. And it’s clear the carbon tax being planned by the Trudeau government does not meet this test.

The costs include squeezing the budget of Canadian families in the form of higher prices as well as making Canada a less competitive place to do business – especially with respect to our neighbours to the south.

And the benefits? Canada is not on pace to hit even its own (insufficient) Paris commitments. Based on the latest UN report, to do its share to keep temperature increases to 1.5 degrees, Canada would need to go much further and cut its current level of emissions in half in just 12 years.

Some back-of-the-napkin math illustrates the impossibility of Canada trying to stop climate change in the absence of coordinated worldwide action. The UN report suggests that a global emissions reduction of 45 per cent by 2030 is needed, amounting to approximately 24 billion tons. Canada’s share would represent around 200 million tons – or

wasting time grandstanding on a $50 tax that does zilch for the climate while picking Canadians’ pockets. They should either go all-in and acknowledge massively higher carbon taxes are necessary to achieve lofty emissions goals while working overtime to get a global deal that will actually stop climate change – or admit they’re the ones content to sit on their hands.

Federal government’s carbon-pricing system violates basic tenets of efficient carbon pricing

by Elmira Aliakbari, Associate Director, Natural Resource Studies, Fraser Institute and Ashley Stedman, Senior Policy Analyst, Fraser Institute In a highly anticipated announcement, the federal government today revealed details of its carbon-pricing system, which will impose a federal carbon tax on provinces that have chosen to forego a provincial policy. The system violates every tenet of an efficient carbon-pricing system and may fail to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Economists generally agree that an efficient carbon tax is characterized by (1) revenue neutrality with revenues used to reduce more costly harmful taxes, (2) substitution of existing regulations and (3) prohibition against subsidies to energy alternatives.

The new federal carbon tax fails to achieve any of these criteria.

First, the federal tax is not revenue neutral, with only an estimated 90 per cent of total new revenues returned to taxpayers. In addition, the revenues will not be used to reduce corporate or personal income tax rates, which impose much higher costs on the economy by discouraging investment, entrepreneurship and savings. Rather, the government announced it will issue lump-sum rebates to households based on income. Such lump-sum payments do nothing to improve the efficiency of the economy or the incentives faced by people considering starting a business, investing, upgrading their skills, etc. Indeed, it appears the government has chosen to use the new tax to further redistribute income, which will increase the costs of this tax to the economy.

Further, the new tax won’t replace any existing regulations. Rather, the new tax will simply be added on top of existing regulations. And existing subsidies to alternative energy sources will continue. In other words, again, Ottawa’s new carbon-pricing system violates every principal of a

sound efficient carbon-pricing model.

Second, the federal government announced that for most families the rebate cheque will exceed the costs of the carbon tax. However, the government’s cost estimate for households from the new tax seem to only include direct costs from higher fuel prices, not the indirect costs associated with carbon pricing.

Specifically, given available details, the plan acknowledges that businesses will pass along some of the costs to households in the form of higher prices—but doesn’t account for job losses, lower wages and reduced investment when calculating the cost impacts of the carbon tax on households. The omission of these factors is particularly problematic given Canada’s declining investment climate, particularly in comparison with United States. As a result, the government may be understating the costs of its carbon price on Canadian households.

Third and finally, the federal government continues to refuse to release details on the estimated leakages from its carbon pricing. “Leakage” refers to circumstances where firms, for instance, reorganize their activities (such as relocating operations) to avoid the carbon tax. In these situations Canada would not only lose the reorganized activity to another country but could also potentially increase GHG emissions. Consider a firm that relocates to a border state but still sells into the Canadian market. In this situation, GHG emissions would likely increase because of the new transportation incurred from the relocation. Such leakages are a potential loss for the country, so the federal government should at least disclose its estimate of such risks.

Properly designed and implemented carbon pricing can work to both improve the economy and better regulate GHG emissions. Unfortunately, the plan announced on Tuesday by the federal government could very well make matters worse.

This is the argument Canadian carbon taxers are making: that securing 0.8 per cent of global reductions is worth punishing millions of Canadians and destroying Canada’s economic competitiveness.

They are asking Canadians to make massive, tangible sacrifices in their everyday lives – not to “save the planet,” but to achieve a mathematical rounding error that will be rendered meaningless in the highly probable event that most other countries don’t also follow.

Canadian carbon tax crusaders need to put their money where their mouths are. If they’re truly committed to arresting climate change, they shouldn’t be

Pumpkin spice: the flavour of fall I saw this on a sign in a store window: “At this point my blood type is pumpkin spice.”

Yes, fall is the pumpkin spice season.

A few weeks ago one of my co-workers bounced into the shop. “The pumpkin spice Bailey’s is out.”

Well, that is something to be excited about. Even more so, as I found out this limited edition flavour quickly sells out in the liquor stores.

But, yes during this season there seems to be more pumpkin spiced products around than is normal. Starbucks has its lattes; Tim Hortons has its coffee. Pumpkin spiced flavoured cereal is found on the shelves.

Almond milk comes in a pumpkin spice flavour.

Pumpkin spice is a combination of spices that is mainly used to season pumpkin pie. Or, it used to be. Now, just about everything can be flavoured with the spice.

But, only at this time of the year.

So, what exactly are the ingredients that make up pumpkin spice? I found this recipe: 18 parts ground cinnamon; four parts nutmeg; four parts ginger; three parts cloves; three parts ground allspice.

These are typically the four spices used in baking pumpkin pie. HowPeggy Hasein ever, this spice can also be used for cooking.

In early (very early) days it was called “pompkin” but the recipe varied slightly from the version used today. The earliest reference can be found in American Cookery, written by Amelia Simmons which dated back to 1796. Pompkin was a mix of mace, nutmeg and ginger.

I would like to share two of the recipes from that cookbook.

First. One quart stewed

and strained, three pints cream, nine beaten eggs, sugar, mace, nutmeg and ginger; laid into paste and with a dough spur, cross and chequer it, and baked in dishes three quarters of an hour.

Not sure at all what any of these instructions mean. Mace is related to nutmeg but is not a common spice. At least not today. At one point it was just as popular as nutmeg.

That stone is where nutmeg comes from. Sur-

rounding that stone is a webbing which, when dried, is what is known as mace.

Now for the second recipe. One quart of milk, one pint pompkin, four eggs, molasses, allspice and ginger in a crust, bake one hour.

Not big on a lot of instructions.

As for pumpkin spice it has shown up in recipes as early as the 1890s. As it became more popular spice companies manufactured premixed versions of the spice. Consider this, as of 2016 pumpkin spice consumables average around $500 million in sales annually.

It certainly adds flavour to all things pumpkin. And, there is no denying the aroma of the spice makes you think of all things warm and cozy. It makes you think of the perfect fall day -- sitting on the porch in a cozy sweater, basking in the rays of the fall sun while sipping on a cup of coffee.

Plans underway for craft show Kaiser players are out in full force with Monday afternoon and Wednesday Kaiser tournaments held regularly.

The October 10 and 17 evening tourneys brought out three and two tables respectively. The October 15 afternoon tourney saw three tables in play with Pat Turner having the highest total score and the highest scoring game.

The first jam session of the season took place the afternoon of October 17 with 50 signing the register. Bob Wiseman, Stan Gardiner, Lawrence Martichenko, Bill Haffermehl, Gord Laycock and Caledonia Donahue participated with Elmer Kurbis providing percussion on the spoons. We

look forward to November’s jam session.

The activity convenors met on Thursday, October 18 to finalize plans for our third annual craft show. We hope to have a dozen crafters displaying their wares. New Horizons will be providing a soup and sandwich lunch for the crafters with a tea room in the lounge for the shoppers.

Just for his own interest Y.T. took down one of the ring binders marked W.B. from the shelf above his desk and decided to play his own personal game of Bingo.

That beat up old folder is sure a “workbook” all right and has quite a list of Y.T.’s scribbling data in it (mostly indexed) some five thousand entries of the memorable incidents of his 90-yearold life.

Making the choice of what to include however, wasn’t that simple.

and knowing he could only use one Y.T. read and read (for hours it seemed) kind of relieving some almost forgotten incidents like “buried wrenches”, “back pole with the old Holt”, “baldheaded women” and “ban robbers of Meppen”, until he finally settled on one: Under the “B” -“Bombs away”.

In 1960 or so when Y.T. was in the hospital, in the bed next to mine was an exairforce type from Zealandia named Don Trapp.

We visited a bit from our beds and soon became well acquainted.

Don had to have an operation on his back and with our wishes for good luck was wheeled away to be operated on. when he was brought back later, instead of putting him in some recovery room, they put him (still unconscious) in with us again in the public ward, and put some curtains up around his bed.

The heavy breathing and gasping from behind those curtains kept the rest of us awake far into the night until finally he gave a great gasp and struggled a bit, knocking some of the utensils off his nearby night table crashing down onto the floor. Clatter bang bang.

Of course we all thought “Poor Don, that was probably his last breath” til suddenly the tension hanging over the whole ward was shattered when his familiar voice hollered, “Bombs away.”

Don often told me of some bombing missions he was on during the war, and one of them is filed under “F” in my workbook, “fire over Bremen.” But, along with a few more, that is another story.

The last time I saw Don was some years ago as we attended a funeral at Biggar.

This “i” thing was a cinch. Y.T. only had to choose it from about 80 other ones, but he kept looking and looking anyway. It’s surprising how one forgets a lot of the things that have happened. Things like “I’m so glad you are home,” “Indian Country”, “I feel lousy” and “Igloo Jay made” (I’ve gotta play

Fall lawn care tips (NC) Many of us feed our lawns at the first signs of spring, but did you know that autumn is the most important time to fertilize?

A lawn fed three to four times a year develops a deep root system to resist heat, drought and wear. It also develops thick green top growth to naturally resist weeds, disease and insects.

Feeding before the ground freezes, but after the lawn no longer needs mowing, will give your lawn the extra nutrients it needs during our long, cold winters.

Look for a fertilizer with higher nitrogen and potassium, the first and last numbers on the bag. These are the nutrients that help promote a stronger root structure, disease resistance and hardiness in cold weather. A properly fed lawn produces a deeper root structure, capable of

reaching water deep in the soil.

Here are some tips to help you put your lawn to bed for the winter: Review your options at a lawn and garden centre by reading the bag. Look for higher nitrogen (N) and potassium (P) ratios.

Use a quality lawn fertilizer spreader or handheld model to ensure even feeding.

It can be refined into a variety of commercial items including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.â€?

It is hemp’s ability to annually produce large quantities of biomass which can be used in such a diverse range of products which has long intrigued producers. The crop could create a viable rotational crop option, for producers, which would also take them into markets away from traditional cereal and oilseed ones.

Hemp has never really gotten off the ground as a farm crop because of it familial connection. “Although cannabis as a drug and industrial hemp both derive from the species Cannabis sativa and contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are distinct strains with unique phytochemical composi-

tions and uses,� states Wikipedia. “Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which decreases or eliminates its psychoactive effects.�

Now with the Cannabis Act in place the opportunity exists for greater research and development of hemp both in terms of being a farm crop, and in terms of its end uses.

Long term that may prove the most important aspect of what the new Act came to allow.

No debate needed: McDavid is NHL’s best Let’s get this over with quickly.

There is no need for a ‘debate’ about the best player in the National Hockey League.

It’s Connor McDavid, far and away the best player in the game.

Anyone trying to spark a ‘debate’ that Auston Matthews of Toronto should be in the ‘best’ discussion is either: a.) unstable; b.) slightly delusional; c.) a budding comedian or d.) a diehard, intransigent Leafs’ fan.

Both are great players. Matthews is off to a sensational start with the Leafs, accumulating 16 points in his team’s first seven games before being blanked in Games 8 and 9.

McDavid, meanwhile, racked up 11 points in his team’s first six games, scoring or assisting on 11 of Edmonton’s first 13 goals. Speed, of course, is at the root of his excellence. He is the fastest skater in the NHL and while he may some near peers in the speed category, no NHLer can control the puck at full speed as he’s able to do.

Defencemen are regularly left flailing away as McDavid wheels around them and helpless goaltenders know a red light is imminent when they see him speeding toward them on a breakaway.

In his first three seasons, McDavid has two scoring titles, an MVP crown and two first allstar team awards. He might have three scoring championships had he not missed three months of his rookie season with a shoulder injury.

Toronto fans, meanwhile, are going gaga over Matthews, who was on pace for more than 100 goals after scoring 10 in Toronto’s first eight games. They are being egged on by the national broadcast media in the Centre of the Universe, who with straight faces

tout Matthews as McDavid’s equal - or, gad!, his superior. The Matthews hype machine has been roaring at full blast since Game 1.

Hockey people know better, and Western Bruce Penton Canadian fans who see McDavid on a regular basis know better, too.

“Connor McDavid has put up back to back 100point seasons,” Mark Scheifele, the Winnipeg centre, told the Globe and Mail. “He has done a lot that Matthews hasn’t.

Auston is a star and is going to get better, but he is not at McDavid’s level yet.”

Matthews may win a Stanley Cup before his Oilers’ rival, because he has a far better supporting cast. But the best individual player? That mythical trophy goes to McDavid, with no debate.

(nee Kappel) October 9, 1938 - August 26, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family Keller of Yvonne her announce 0 passing at 6:40 p.m. on August 26, 2018 in Poplar Courts N u r s i n g Home, Wilkie, Saskatchewan.

Y v o n n e was born on 8, October 9, 1938, est the youngest t J h of eight children, to John and Rose Kappel in the Pascal area.

She attended Grade One in the Pascal School and then they moved closer to Leipzig, Sask. where she then attended Leipzig School. She loved horses and since they were the main farm power at the time, there were many around. Her mother would sew all the dresses for the daughters for school, cultivate a large garden and prepare meals for the farm crews. The sudden passing of her mother when Yvonne was nine years old would be a defining moment in her childhood responsibilities.

In 1955, she married Edward C. Keller where they continued to live and farm in the Leipzig area while raising seven children. While creating a life for their family, they were both involved in the community where Yvonne was involved with the Catholic Women’s League for many years. As the family matured and expanded, Yvonne and Ed continued to farm together until Ed passed away due to complications from cancer in 2001. Yvonne loved the outdoors and lived on the farm until 2016. Her son, Iain, and daughter-in-law, Jaimee, lived in the adjoining yard. Their generous support enabled Yvonne to maintain her independence. Yvonne joined her daughter, Yvette, on her many business and pleasure road trips with Johnny Reid, Bob Williston, and Elvis along for the ride.

In 2016, Yvonne moved to Poplar Courts where she enjoyed interacting with residents and staff. Family and friends were always welcomed. She was the last surviving member of her siblings.

Yvonne is survived by her seven children: Yvette (Robert) Gruber, Bernadine (Henry) Jungwirth, Edwina (James) Weninger, Charles Keller (Jennifer Kripki), Clifford (Rita) Keller, Alan Keller (Dwayne Dubois), Iain (Jaimee) Keller; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren: John Gruber, Nathan Gruber, Aaron Gruber (Gary Mai), and Abra Gruber; Jared (Jennifer) Jungwirth and children James and Julia, Orin Jungwirth (Kelsey Wright) and daughter Georgia; Alyssa Weninger, Megan (Adam) Pegg, Edward (Janessa) Weninger and son Vincent; Jack Keller, Charlie Keller; Ashley Keller; Jocelyn Dubois; Ethan Keller, Jade Keller; her sister- and brothers-in-law, Rita (Leo) Meier and Arnold Stark; along with many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews.

She is predeceased by her parents; her husband; seven siblings and in-laws: Helen (Leo) Sittler, Isabel (Ted) Stark, Cletus (Agnes) Kappel, Irene Stark, Mildred (Leonard) Ulsifer, Alfred Kappel, Donald (Janet) Kappel; and grandson, (David Weninger).

Ronald Wylie HEATHER July 25, 1939 - October 12, 2018 Ron Heather passed away October 12, 2018 in Saskatoon, Sask. at the age of 79 years. He was born July 25, 1939 in Biggar, Sask.

Ron is survived by his daughter, Sharalee Laventure (Les Wailing); and son, Danny Heather (Brenda Bindig); five grandchildren, Chantel Houle, Chad Laventure, Curtis Laventure, Catlin Heather and Ashley Heather. He also has two great-granddaughters, Madison and Kaycee Houle. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Carol; and son, Brad.

Bruce Edward BEEBE November 28, 1955 - October 3, 2018 Bruce Edward Beebe was born November 28, 1955 to Calvin and Nettie Beebe in Biggar, Sask.

He passed away on October 3, 2018 in Edmonton, Alberta at the age of 62 years.

He received all his education in Biggar, and graduated from Biggar Composite High School in 1973.

As a child, he was active in Air Cadets, hockey and lacrosse. He took a very active part in hunting and fishing. You could always count on him to come home every Christmas making his first stop at Darryl and Laura's. He always had many stories to tell and sometimes, if you were lucky enough, you got to hear them more than once!

All knew Bruce as easy going. Always had a story to tell. Loved to laugh at his own stories! Super friendly and could talk to anyone! Never short of words.

Unforgettable presence. Unforgettable laugh.

Bruce loved dogs, all dogs. His best buddy was Cody, his faithful and beloved black lab/retriever cross. They were inseparable. Countless stories of Cody travelling through the City of Edmonton to reunite with Bruce. Best dog ever!

Bruce loved his fishing (with his buddy Bob) and could sit in a boat all day and into the evening. Many memories over 20 plus years camping and fishing with the Hoppes at Slave Lake, Alberta. Fishing, fresh fish for supper, campfires, and yes -- Johnny Cash in the morning -- years of memories.

Bruce also loved to hunt. He always spent the month of November with the Hoppes, hunting by day, and heartily eating home cooked meals at night! So many hunting memories, but there's one story that stands out.

Burce always hunted with Bob, and eventually with Bob's sons when they were old enough. Bob's son, Colin, would often sit with him when Colin was learning to hunt. Bruce would sit on his padded five gallon pail, and then he would let one rip! So loud, that you could hear it in the next county!!! and then he would say to Colin, "just calling them in Collie". And then he'd sit back on his padded five gallon pail, and light a cigarett. Always, about one or two minutes later, a deer would walk out!

And then he's say, "That's how we do it!"

Colin just about started smoking cause

he thought that's how you shot deer!

Bruce was a good guy to be around. He loved playing crib and had outstanding luck! Everybody's got at least a dozen stories, memories that will never fade.

Bruce will always have a special place in our memories and will be missed.

Bruce is survived by his mother, Nettie of Biggar, Sask.; sister, Sylvia (Keith) Lonsdale; brother, Bob Beebe; sister, Laura (Darryl) Smith; sister, Donna (Murray) Byrt; brother, Dennis (Madeleine) Beebe; brother, Murray Beebe; brother, Clark (Blanche) Beebe; sister, Myrna (Mike) Bhat; nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was predeceased by his father, Calvin; and nephew, Cote.

How to safeguard your vehicle from the elements In a perfect world, all vehicle owners would be able to park their cars and trucks in garages.

In such a world, automobiles would not be vulnerable to sun, storms and other natural elements that, over time, can contribute to wear and tear.

But many drivers cannot or choose not to park their cars in garages. Some are content to let their vehicles brave the elements, while others look for ways to protect their cars and trucks as much as possible. Drivers who count themselves among the latter group can take these simple steps to protect their cars and trucks from whatever Mother Nature has in store for them. • Park in the shade.

Parking in the shade can protect both the interior and exterior of a vehicle. Shaded areas protect upholstery and

dashboards inside the car from sun-induced fading, while also limiting the damage sun can

cause to exterior paint.

Faded paint may hurt the resale value of a vehicle, prompting prospective buyers to walk away or at least wonder if a vehicle with a faded exterior was well maintained. • Wash and wax. Washing and waxing a vehicle helps to minimize damage that’s inevitable regardless of where drivers park their cars.

Dirt and debris litter roadways, and over time cars can collect a large amount of these unwanted stowaways. If dirt and

debris are not removed, they can cause long-term damage to vehicle exteriors. Washing and wax-

ing a car can ensure its exterior looks good and reduce the likelihood of rust and other corrosion from occurring. • Don’t write off bird droppings. Some drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages, may write off bird droppings as an annoying yet harmless side effect of vehicle ownership. However, bird droppings are acidic and, if left to their unsightly devices, can cause permanent damage to vehicle paint. Tree sap

is an equally formidable foe, potentially causing scratching because it can be very difficult to remove without spreading. Specially formulated sprays can help drivers remove bird droppings and sap from their vehicles. • Employ a car cover.

Drivers who have garages but use them to store things other than their vehicles can use car covers when parking their cars in their driveways.

Covers protect cars from the elements and can be quickly and easily removed.

Nature can be harsh on vehicles. Protecting automobiles from the elements should be a priority for drivers, especially those who do not park their cars and trucks in garages.

Do Your Hands Smell?

One of the biggest complaints I hear about, regarding prepping fresh ingredients like garlic and onions, is how odours from these ingredients tend to linger on your hands afterwards.

This can not only be annoying to yourself, but also could interfere in social interactions between you and others.

Throughout my career as a chef, by working with other professionals and simply chatting with people about food, I have come across several solutions that will help rid you of this pesky problem.

Some are better than others, but they all work to some degree.

Coffee Grounds â&#x20AC;&#x201C; if you drink coffee, then you have them leftover daily.

Yes, used coffee grounds.

Keep a supply of them by your sink and use them as a scrub, with or without soap, to help eliminate odours from your hands.

Stainless Steel â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this has been a long-standing tradition with many home cooks. It is claimed that if you simply rub your hands on stainless steel, odours from your hands will be eliminated.

Gourmet Kitchen Stores even sell little chunks of stainless steel, shaped as small bars of soap, for this exact purpose.

Baking Soda â&#x20AC;&#x201C; make a paste of baking soda and water to scrub your hands with. Baking soda has been known for years as an odour removing aid, so why not on your hands too?

Lemon Juice and Salt â&#x20AC;&#x201C; hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s another example of a scrub combination for your hands. This one however will leave your hands lemony fresh, whereas the baking soda idea will leave no pleasant scent at all. A word of caution however: if you have any small cuts

on your fingers/hands, you will sure know where they are after washing with lemon juice and salt.

Vinegar and salt can also be used.

Your hands however may get very dry from the high acid content of the Chef Dez lemon juice or vinegar.

Tomato Juice/Paste â&#x20AC;&#x201C; probably one of the costliest solutions here, but this is not only for skunk spray â&#x20AC;&#x201C; it works on food smells too.

Toothpaste or Mouthwash â&#x20AC;&#x201C; yes, these are not just for your washroom. A thorough scrub with toothpaste, or a wash with mouthwash,

will leave your hands smelling minty fresh.

Just remember to rinse with cold water afterwards. You will find this easier than brushing your teeth because no flossing is necessary.

Cooking Oil â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this is a preventative measure that I have heard of, but I DO not recommend it. The idea is to coat your hands with cooking oil in advance to help eliminate the transfer of odours onto your hands, but chances are you will be working with a knife or other sharp kitchen utensils and the last thing you want is your hands to be slippery.

Latex Gloves â&#x20AC;&#x201C; very popular with professional kitchens and other food-safe environments.

These will guarantee that odours donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get transferred onto your hands.

However, there is a cost involved of always having these on hand, and an impact on our environment/landfills if they are disposed of into the garbage pail.

Floral/Fragrant Soaps â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not the most effective as they will usually just mask the odours and not eliminate them, however I do know people that only do this as their solution.

Cold Water â&#x20AC;&#x201C; This is my old â&#x20AC;&#x153;standbyâ&#x20AC;? and I do this more than any of the suggestions listed above. Wash your hands with cold water, with or without soap. Not warm, not hot, but cold water.

Warm or hot water, even if using soap, will cause the pores in your skin to open up - the odours are more likely to get trapped there, and thus will linger even after washing. Cold water however, will keep the pores closed, and more of the odours will simply wash away. If you choose to do this without soap, that is fine as a first step â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but afterwards, in order to keep sanitary in the kitchen, please follow up with a lathered washing (warm water is fine now that the odours are gone).
