Maritime duo to hit the Majestic Theatre this Sunday

Uniquely Canadian, Maritime musicians Matthew Hornell and Andrew Sneddon will will take you on an exploration of the music they love at Biggar’s Majestic Theatre, Sunday, October 29.

Timeless traditional ballads, old time, bluegrass, evocative original songs, and exciting instrumentals, Hornell and Sneddon invite you on a musical journey.

Although both Hornell and Sneddon were raised far from the hills and hollers of Appalachia, they come to the music honestly, both born of that same Scottish/Irish lineage and raised in the lea of the Northernmost reaches of that ancient mountain range.

Matthew Hornell provides the lead vocals and a driving rhythm guitar; Andrew Sneddon offers up a silvery counterpoint with his resophonic guitar and smooth tenor harmony that blends

perfectly with Matthew’s rich melodious baritone and lead vocals.

Luseland Corner Store Break and Enter.

On September 24, at approximately 4 a.m., RCMP were called to an alarm at a pharmacy in the town of Unity. RCMP discovered that entry had been gained by thieves who then attempted to access the pharmacy’s drugs. The suspects caused damage to the building but were unsuccessful in accessing the drugs. Video surveillance captured images of a male and a female suspect in this Break and Enter.

Later on Sept. 24, a female matching the description of the female from the Unity Break and Enter, was caught on camera stealing items from a Luseland business.

Winter can be great As this editorial is being written, the weather man is predicting snow for some parts of the province. Not surprising as we are approaching Halloween. Maybe the snow won’t reach us but it is a reminder that we must make preparations for winter.

For many, this season is not their favourite. Some escape it by heading south to warmer climes. The publisher was walking down the street one day when a reader shouted to him, “It’s time to head south.” Now, anywhere else that would be a cryptic remark but when you know your readers personally it means time to quit sending the newspaper to the post office, I’ll come in to the office when I get back. This reader accesses The Independent online over the winter.

Winter can be a great season. Hockey fans love it. The rink is busy again after sitting empty over the summer.

The dreaded “snow” will come. Some call it a four letter word. It is a half full, half empty type of scenario. It will come. That is a fact. Let’s think about all the wonderful things the season has to offer. There is skiing. Hoar frost which is beautiful. Days sitting by the fire. Curling. Indoor activities. Christmas. Winter holidays.

But, perhaps the very best part about this time of the year is that annoying speed bump by Little Apple Park is gone.

Governments across Canada hurting business investment alienate the business community and

by Philip Cross: Philip Cross spent 36 years at Statistics Canada, the last few years as its Chief Economic Analyst The importance of business investment to economic growth is widely acknowledged. Investment boosts productive capacity and embodies new technologies that raise productivity and living standards over the long term. In the short term, business investment plays an out-sized role in fluctuations in economic growth. Persistently weak investment is a major reason why Canada’s growth has lagged in recent years. However, despite the lip service paid to its importance, Canada seems complacent or uninformed about business investment. Perhaps Canadians assume that investment has faltered in all the major industrialized countries and that our energy megaprojects would sustain capital spending.

However, even before the energy sector collapsed in 2015, Canada had one of the lowest levels of investment in the major industrial countries. As a share of GDP, business investment in Canada stands around 11 per cent, second last among the 17 OECD countries for which there are comparable data.

This is almost half as much as investment as in South Korea, and less than the 12 per cent to 15 per cent prevailing

in most major European countries and the United States.

The amount of capital investment each employee in Canada has to work with is less than US$10,000, the third lowest in the major industrial countries, ahead of only New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Americans, by comparison, have 60 per cent more capital to work with. And this isn’t a new development. Even with the boom in energy investment over the past decade, investment in Canada has been low by international standards, especially in manufacturing and services where spending on machinery and equipment has been particularly weak (trailing even Greece). In turn, low demand for machinery and equipment inhibits the growth of our own technology sector, a major supplier of machinery and equipment.

The reasons for Canada’s low investment are complex. But governments have not helped in recent years as they have increasingly failed to encourage a positive business climate. Several factors should be encouraging more investment, such as low interest rates, high capacity use in manufacturing and an aging labour force. Nevertheless, investment lags across the country.

It’s no wonder business confidence among small and large businesses is plummeting. The Business Council of Canada found that 64 per cent of the CEOs of large firms say the investment climate in Canada has worsened over the last five years, specifically the growing tax and regulatory burden.

Meanwhile, the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses reports confidence among small businesses fell for the fourth consecutive month, with the fastest rate of decline since the 20082009 recession.

Simply put, any chance of an incipient recovery of business investment seems to have been smothered by recent government initiatives. By depressing investment, we dampen productivity growth, inhibit wage increases and reduce our competitiveness in global markets.

Governments have raised the effective tax rate on new investment since 2012, after reductions after the turn of the century. Large budget deficits and increasing debt promise more tax increases in the future. The weakness in manufacturing investment has been especially pronounced in Ontario, which has adopted several policies that increase the cost of doing business there.

It is a national disgrace that Canada provides less capital investment to its employees on average than almost every other OECD country. Every federal-provincial conference and government and summits of business leaders should focus on this problem with the sense of urgency it deserves. Instead, our governments seem to do everything possible to discourage investment.

Governments are hiking marginal tax rates, raising EI premiums next year, increasing CPP contributions, boosting minimum wages markedly (Ontario and Alberta, with British Columbia likely to follow), introducing a new carbon tax and costly new labour regulations and raising corporate income taxes in B.C. and Alberta.

Meanwhile, the federal government is considering tax reforms that further

Celebrate small businesses in your community October 15-21 was Small Business Week across the country. After reading a number of articles, the impact small businesses make on the economy is significant.

And, most small businesses can be found on Main Streets in rural communities.

Small Business Week was officially launched in Canada in 1981. Since then the third week in October reflects on the efforts of entrepreneurs who own and operate small and medium sized businesses. A small business is defined as one to 99 employees; a medium size is 100 - 499 employees.

In Canada there are 1,143,630 small businesses; 21,415 medium sized businesses. In Manitoba there are 37,776 small businesses; 829 medium sized businesses. Saskatchewan has 40,453 small businesses; 644 medium sized businesses.

The owners are more understanding if a staff member needs time off for doctor appointments, caring for a family member or even just going on a field trip with their Kindergartner.

As for service, small business owners tend to know their customers on a first name basis. They know if someone needs special service. I know some hairdressers that will visit their clients in their home because those clients are unable to come to the shop due to mobility issues.

Small businesses are very community minded.

The owners and their staff volunteer for many fundraisers and organizations. Very likely the business will lend support financially for the project.

As you look up and down the street in your town, take a moment to ponder what it would look like if there were no grocery store, no drugstore, no tire shop.

Everyone knows the value of the business community, sometimes it just needs to be pointed out -- and that’s what these special weeks are all about.

I feel that Y.T. has written this before one time and I wouldn’t blame the readers if they said “That old cluck is sure losing some of his marbles when he repeats stuff like that!�.

But memories repeat themselves, and these are some of mine! We all have memories. This whole column is about memories - so with the blessing of The Independent people, here goes, eh?

I don’t think that I had ever seen a man quite like him before. To quote a line from “Herbie� by Bing Coughlin: “He came from a place in Northern Saskatchewan that no one had ever heard of...�

But it was the straight blonde hair and Frisian features that seemed to be the things that set him apart.

Apparently he loved poker (many of us are addicted to card games!) but I imagine that he knew every word of the “Card Players Prayer�.

Acksel Hanson (later killed north of the Kuston Kanal!) was the closest likeness to the man I write of! And it seems to one that Y.T. wrote a piece about Acksel long ago!

I think that the first time I really noticed this guy was in P.A. where we took our “basic� army training. We had just come in from a gruelling (of greenhorn!) routemarch, when I saw those long legs stretched under the closest “hut-table�, and that so-different (to me anyway!) face and the blonde straight hair and, oh yes, a few cards in his hand. “Hello!� he said, but another card player butted-in. “Five card stud, deuced wild,� leaving us no chance to have a conversation. (I learned later on, that it is rude to visit during a poker game!)

R.M. of Biggar No. 347 FIRE BAN The Council of the R.M. of Biggar No. 347 has issued a fire ban for the municipality effective immediately, due to the dry conditions.

Disconnect between science and public opinion

by Calvin Daniels It seems of late there are more and more people who look suspiciously at science.

This week will be the first of a two-part column looking at the disconnect between the public and science.

There are some obvious reasons for it, as the announced safety by science of a number of notable products has proven to be huge misses.

Thalidomide was synthesized in West Germany in 1954 by Chemie Grünenthal. It was marketed from 1957 into the early 1960’s. Thalidomide was present in at least 46 countries under many different brand names. It was a sedative that was found to be effective when given to pregnant women to combat many of the symptoms associated with morning sickness.

It was not realized that thalidomide molecules could cross the placental wall affecting the foetus until it was too late.

Many babies were born with deformities as a result.

PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, are industrial products or chemicals. PCB contamination is high in the Housatonic River and New Bedford Harbor in Massachusetts.

PCBs were banned in the U.S. in 1979 amid suggestions that these chemicals could have

unintended impacts on human and environmental health. But they were in use in many sites for years.

Asbestos is a hazard to health when the fibers are disturbed and become airborne. This means that asbestos poses health risks only when fibres are present in the air and then people breathe them into the lungs. Fibres can be released into the air when asbestos-containing products break down. Again it was widely used.

So the best science has not always been on the

mark.

As a result consumers have at least some basis for questioning science.

That said the agriculture sector has always pointed to science as the most unbiased way to look at things.

When Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as mad cow disease, struck in Canada back in 2003 many countries slammed the door on imports of live cattle and beef from this Calvin Daniels country. It was a somewhat natural reaction since BSE is a

transmissible spongiform encephalopathy and fatal neurodegenerative disease in cattle that may be passed to humans who have eaten infected flesh. BSE causes a spongiform degeneration of the brain and spinal cord.

But, Canadian farmers pointed to science which suggested the risk was a miniscule one.

Now the debate over the accuracy of science in terms of an important tool in agriculture and the health risks of glysophate.

International Agency for Research on Cancer

(IARC) came out some time ago suggesting the widely used agricultural herbicide may cause cancer in humans.

To be fair though in 2011 IARC tags too much sunshine as a cancer risk and in 2011 classified radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as possibly carcinogenic to humans based on an increased risk for glioma, a malignant type of brain cancer, associated with wireless phone use.

So what does something like the IARC classification mean? I’ll take a look at just that next week.

Leafs shine, Habs struggle in wacky NHL start Early surprises from the 2017-18 National Hockey League season, with the first one about the best player in the league, Connor McDavid.

— Why hasn’t McDavid been filling the net? After scoring three goals in his first game, leading veteran Jaromir Jagr of the Flames to say McDavid was too talented to stop and could score 100 or 150 goals in a season, the 20-year-old reigning MVP proceeded to go five games without a goal. Is he all skate, all flash, no score?

— Can it be possible that the Toronto Maple Leafs are, indeed, the best team in the league?

Las Vegas oddsmakers, after coach Mike Babcock’s team went 6-1-0 in its first seven games, pegged the team formerly known as the Maple Laffs as the odds-on favourite to win the Stanley Cup. Hey, why not? Gord Downie of the Tragically Hip passed away and he wrote the song “50 Mission Cap” about the last time the Leafs won the Cup (1967), so perhaps there’s karma at work here.

— Can it be possible that the Montreal Canadiens are the worst team

in the NHL? Wow, through eight games, the Habs had scored a grand total of 13 goals and had only one victory to their credit, a fortunate shootout win over woeful Buffalo. It’s Montreal’s worst start after eight games since 1941.

Carey Price may or may not be the best goalie in the league (he used to be, that’s for sure) but if he’s not at his absolute stand-on-his-head best on a particular night, the offence-challenged Habs seem to have little or no chance to win.

— When Wayne Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1981-82, it was a mindboggling total most fans thought would never be topped. So here we are in 2017-18, coming off a season when 44 goals (by Sidney Crosby) was the league’s best, and two Russians, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and Tampa’s Nikita Kucherov each had 10 goals in their first nine games — a 91-goal pace. New Horizons Activities On October 18 at New Horizons we had our first Jam Session of the season.

A total of seven performers came out to entertain the crowd including Bob Wiseman, Wilfred and Joan Rice, Art Beadle, Gordon Laycock, Stan Gardiner and 9-year-old Caledonia Donahue.

There was a fantastic variety of music ranging between country, original songs by Bob Wiseman, a couple hits by Johnny Cash and a bit of gospel.

Last report I somehow forgot to report on our birthday potluck! We have our birthday potlucks on the second Monday of each month

and this past month it happened to be on the same day as Thanksgiving (October 9th). We had an attendance of 20 people in total and the winner of the half-n-half draw was Pat Turner.

Thanks to everyone that came out to celebrate our members with birthdays this month!

The Kaiser winners for Monday the 16th were the following: in first place with 255 points was Mildred Henne, in second place with 252 points was Ken Pearce, in third place with 174 points was Geoff Cooke and in fourth place with 170 points was Pat Turner. The highest

scoring game was played

by Marie Roesch and Ken Pearce with 63 points.

With our recent purchase of the new Courtesy Car, we would like to once again invite you to make a donation to New Horizons. This past summer we also had to have our air conditioner replaced in the hall. Any donations to help us cover our recent costs would be greatly appreciated! by Karen Kammer, Recreation Coordinator Warm fall greetings everyone, I just realized that I have missed a months’ worth of information about our wonderful facility. Again I am sorry about that and I will give you a little bit of the highlights.

On October 2 we had our usual Monday morning exercises. That afternoon we had crossword puzzles and a toast to Seniors Week.

On October 4, we had Birthday party with County II. Six birthdays were celebrated. The Seventh Day Ladies supplied evening lunch.

The day after we had Bible Study. We had our own mini Olympics in the morning. The events were: fastest speed walker, archery, horseshoes, paper plane flying, wheelchair racer and javelin.

We had a winner in each event and they took home a certificate.

On October 6 the Barbecue was down Willow. We had crafts in the afternoon. The residents got to make several things like clay pot turkeys, beaded pumpkins/corn and felt sticker art.

St. Gab’s was here for church on October 8. On Thanksgiving Monday they had a tea done by the staff at the Lodge.

On October 11, the residents baked chocolate chip cookies. The smell floated all over the building. In the afternoon, the Wilkie nursing home

came for a visit. Too bad the weather was a little ugly out for them. We had ice cream sundaes.

It was great to see old friends and made a few new friendships.

Thursday the 12th we had Bible Study. In the afternoon we had our bi annual Tea and Bake Sale. We had a variety of desserts to pick from. The winners from the prizes were: 1st - Brett Barber; 2nd - Sharon Trotchie; 3rd - Kelly Oesch; 50/50 - Julie Kobelsky, and the afghan draw was won by our own Evelyn Potter.

Thanks to everyone who helped out or donated to the Activity Fund.

Friday the 13th was another busy day for the residents. In the morning we had hymn sing.

Barbecue Club was down Skyview. After lunch the residents played a new game called “Hed Banz”.

They wear a head band with a picture on top.

Other residents have to give clues to figure out what picture they are wearing. After that they played other board games.

Church for the 15th was Church of God. On October 17 we had current events. In the afternoon we had Al Gil here from Wilkie for an afternoon of music.

On Wednesday we had curling in the morning.

The blue team won 14-10.

In the afternoon, we took a bus load of residents to the Jam Session at New Horizons. In the evening

we had games night with our retired Activity worker Barb and her friend Sharon.

Friday we had our second last Barbecue Club of the year down Prairiw. At 2:30 we had football. Saturday was animal bingo and a movie.

Sunday was 1-1 time.

The Philipino church was here for worship.
