Harvest reaches mid-point; well behind five-year average Many producers were able to return to the field last week and 55 per cent of the crop is now in the bin.

This is up from 47 per cent last week but remains well behind the five-year (2014-18) average of 82 per cent for this time of year, according to the weekly crop report for October 1 to 7. Twenty-nine per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Much of the crop harvested so far is tough or damp and is being put into grain dryers and aeration bins.

Warm, dry and windy days are needed soon so that producers can return to the field. All regions in the province progressed with harvest this past week. Harvest is most advanced in the southwest region, where 71 per cent of the crop is now combined. The northeast region has 61 per cent combined, the west-central region 58 per cent and the southeastern region 55 per cent. The northwest region has 42 per cent combined and the eastcentral region 39 per cent.

Seventy-six per cent of barley, 59 per cent of durum, 58 per cent of mustard, 52 per cent of spring wheat, 50 per cent of canary seed and oats, 40 per cent of canola, 39 per cent of chickpeas, 28 per cent of soybeans and nine per cent of flax is now in the bin. An additional 48 per cent of canola and 19 per cent

Most areas of the province received some precipitation last week. The Moosomin area reported 20 millimetres, while the Elfros and Bethune areas received 16 millimetres.

Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 15 per cent surplus, 52 per cent adequate, 30 per cent sort and three per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 19 per cent surplus, 74 per cent adequate, six per cent short and one per cent very short.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to strong winds and frost. There continues to be many reports of crops sprouting, bleaching and staining and downgrading is expected at the elevator. Geese and wildlife are feeding on swathed crops and causing damage.

Farmers are busy drying grain and waiting for the weather to improve so they can continue with harvest operations.

Nick Earle and Chris Kirby have teamed together for a high energy acoustic blues/roots show filled with highlevel guitar playing, and soulful vocals.

Earle and Kirby will pay their respects to the Mississippi Delta, but also pave a new road for blues music in the 21 Century.

Between the two, they have won numerous Canadian Folk Music Awards, ECMAs (East

Coast Music Association), Music NL Awards, and have collected a multitude of nominations from the Maple Blues awards and more.

Nick Earle is a Canadian guitarist and singersongwriter from St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Nick began his career in the music industry as one half of the nationally recognized duo “Earle and Coffin.” As part of this duo, he has received two Canadian Folk Music Awards, two Music NL Awards as well as a multitude of ECMA, Maple Blues, and Music NL nominations.

While celebrating the

success of Earle and Coffin, Nick has now stepped out into a new musical endeavour along with his band The Reckless Hearts. Nick brings his unique combination of soulful vocals and unorthodox guitar playing to this new effort which is garnering attention nationwide.

Soulful Newfoundland singer/songwriter Chris Kirby is an award-winning producer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist, and recently came back with his first album in seven years, “, featuring the hot singles “Pot of Gold” and “Better Not Let Me Down”.

Chris has been on the road with Matt Andersen, song writing for the likes of Juno-winners The East Pointers, Stephen Fearing, The Once, Tim Chaisson and more.

He’s produced East Coast Music Award-winning albums for Charlie A’Court and Beauwater, plus hot new folk act Quote The Raven, country/Americana artist Chris Ryan and lots of others.

Don’t forget to vote Well . . . as they say politics does make for strange bedfellows.

And the last few weeks of this election campaign has shown that saying to be true.

First the NDP will prop up a Liberal government -- then they won’t.

The Green Party may or may not form a coalition with another party.

The thing is maybe they should just wait until the results are tabulated on election night before making any decisions.

The CBC polls have the Conservatives in the lead while CTV polling shows the Liberals in the lead.

Both polls are calling a close race.

Advance polling has been up with more people taking advantage of this option than ever before.

Political pundits are quick to say voters are sending a message. Maybe, just maybe, voters are either going to be away or just want to avoid the inevitable confusion at the polling stations on the 21st.

Voters should put all of this aside and just do one thing.

Fall produce delicious and colourful There are so many things that are great at this time of year. It truly is one of my favourite seasons.

First, there are the colours of the season.

The reds, yellows and burnt oranges. It was Siobhan Vivian that said: “Fall colours are funny.

They’re so bright and intense and beautiful. It’s like nature is trying to fill you up with colour, to saturate you so you can stockpile it before winter turns everything muted and dreary.”

I’ve always thought of fall colours as being warm. Just forget the temperatures, it’s the colours we are thinking about. Generally those shades invoke warmth.

It is also the harvest season. The cornucopia filled with fruits and vegetables that ripen.

The gathering of garden bounty. It is a time to celebrate and so many harvest festivals can be found in communities.

Thanksgiving is one holiday. The Chinese celebrate a Moon festival.

The theme is common -- being thankful for the abundance of harvest.

Talking of the harvest there are many vegetables that come into their own during the autumn days. The pumpkin is but one. True, many are grown with the prospect of being made into jack-o-lanterns during Halloween but the fruit of this squash cultivar

makes incredibly good pies.

Pumpkins are more than just decorative items.

The flowers are edible.

The seeds are very tasty especially when dried and seasoned.

They are a great source of protein, minerals and vitamins.

But, the seeds are also used for medicinal

purposes. The pilgrims dried pumpkins and used the shells for bowls, something which many restaurants are incorporating into their presentations.

As for the pie -- the largest pumpkin pie ever made was over five feet in diameter and weighed over 350 pounds.

It used 80 pounds of cooked Peggy Hasein pumpkin, 36 pounds of

sugar, 12 dozen eggs and took six hours to bake.

While pumpkins are a member of the squash family, they are not the only to be appreciated -- acorn, spaghetti, butternut, buttercup and hubbard are other great choices. Squash need lots of space in a garden as they tend to spread. I have heard some people grow them on trellises.

As for other fall vegetables consider beets or carrots or brussels sprouts. My mother always said that beets get sweeter with the cool temperatures and she swore that waiting until after the first frost made them even sweeter. As I am not fond of beets,

I was forced to take her word for it. Another vegetable that reportedly becomes sweeter with cool temperatures is the carrot.

The vegetables come into their own but let’s not forget the fall fruits.

Apples. So tasty when picked off the tree. And, they too, make great pies. Fresh apple pies just coming out the oven -- mmmm! Many a cook will tell you to choose a crisp, tart apple for pie baking. Some people even add a sharp cheddar cheese on their slice when eating.

Enjoy the bounty. The last chance for fresh produce from the garden for winter and snow is near.

The Padre Everyone liked Charlie.

And Y.T. (Yours Truly) is kind of sorry that I didn’t know him longer.

I think that the first time I saw him was at St. Michael’s Gestle in Holland. The Padre didn’t have the best job in the army.

Sure he was a religious man, but one of his jobs was -- day after day -- seeing the dead and dying young men (not old types like the writer).

He often held little church services here and there, but sometimes they were pretty small.

Y.T. does remember just before we went into

the Hochwald Forest (in the Rhineland) and how we tapped out, “Nearer My God To Thee” on an old broken piano, knowing that a lot of men were not going to come out, mostly thinking it might be the other fellows who never made it.

I recall at that time carrying a badly wounded man out. The overworked M.D. said, “Put him on the door.” And the fellow was not dead

yet.

The Padre rushed over and gave him the Last Rites.

It was at one of these reunions that the Padre told me the following: “Two young officers were talking at the Officer’s Mess. “There is no God,” one sez.

Just then the Padre (a

The young officer almost smirked. “Don’t be silly Padre,” he said.

“No one can prove theologically that there is an atom bomb.”

“That’s what I mean,” sez the Padre, “and conversely I defy any scientist to prove that there is no God.” Touche, eh?

I don’t know where the Padre went. Some say that he retired to the coast somewhere.

But Y.T. will never forget what the Padre told him.

As a matter of fact, may we all remember Charlie McLean.

I had almost forgotten that I would have mentioned this before, but Mr. Shakespeare made an excuse when he wrote in Henry V: Old Men Forget All will be forgot, but he will write with advantages what deeds were done that day. And then we will never be forgotten, we few, we

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the September 11 regular council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the September 2019 financial and September 2019 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Foreman Kraft has finished pumping out the lagoon, as well as some maintenance was done to repair the discharge area by the creek.

A controlled burn was done at the old landfill site to dispose of piles of clean waste materials.

Fire Prevention Week was on October 8. Hot dogs and refreshments were provided. Fire Chief Colin Graham did a presentation for Fire Prevention Week at Lord Asquith School. The insulating of the fire hall is now completed.

There will be a public meeting on November 5 at the Seniors Centre in the Town of Asquith to hear any person or group that wants to comment on the proposed Bylaw No. 10-2019 Amendment to the Zoning Bylaw to permit the use of shipping containers within the Town of Asquith.

The Autumn Clean Up Weekend, October 5-6 was a success.

A reminder that there is another Clean Waste Day this month on the 26th. Council would like to remind all residents that if you see something that is a crime or looks criminals to call the RCMP. If you see individuals driving dangerously, speeding or if you see something that just doesn’t look right, please call the RCMP. It does not do any good to come into the Town Office the next day to report it to office staff. It is extremely important that the RCMP have a handle on how much crime, no matter how petty, is occurring in the town.

However, while this approach may get you through the day, you could be missing out on the benefits of a nutritionally sound diet.

Choosing to eat healthier options can help you feel more energized throughout the day, which helps you power through even the busiest of schedules.

Here are three tips to eating healthy while juggling a busy lifestyle:

Prepare meals ahead of time. Once the hunger pangs strike, you rarely have much time to act.

To get ahead of the cravings, prepare your meals ahead of time and choose foods that are easily refrigerated or frozen that can be reheated later. There are many healthy meal options that can be stored in the fridge for up to three to four days (longer if frozen) that also taste great.

Opt for more plantbased food. This tip doesn’t need to completely change your eating habits. But choosing at least one vegetarian meal each week is a great start. Plant-based foods

are great for you because they cut out added sugars and refined grains, resulting in improved mental and physical function, as well as helping reduce your risks of heart disease, obesity and diabetes.

Pack/store easy-to-eat snacks. Foods like granola bars, fruits, veggies, nuts and seeds are easily packed in your bag or stored at your desk and require little to no preparation. These foods can keep you feeling satiated between meals. There are plenty of great-tasting and healthy options when it comes to granola or protein bars.

Lord Asquith School news

by Brett Kirk, Principal It has been a great first month of the school year here at LAS. Our kids have all settled back into the routine of school by now and are working hard to deepen their understanding of math, literacy and the world around them.

We have been fortunate to have community visitors in the school the past couple weeks, including the Asquith Fire Department talking to the elementary students about fire safety, and Cst. Sean Nave from

the RCMP helping us with our school safety plan and even hanging out with the Grade 1 class learning about the rules of the road.

We were also super excited about the Identity Fair in the elementary grades. The kids did an amazing job of their posters, and they were so proud to share what was most important to them with all of the parents and grandparents who came to take part. It was awesome to see.

Our sports teams have had a fantastic start to

the school year, highlighted by our crosscountry team’s excellent performance at the CVAC District Meet, and our Senior Girls Volleyball team doing really well in their tournaments in Maidstone and Martensville. We also have some of our high school boys playing football in Delisle, and their season is off to a strong start as well with playoffs right around the corner.

alone, I would always put on music, light some candles and pour myself a glass of wine. “I was worth it� I told her, “and so are you.�

When rekindling a passion for anything, we need to really focus on the little things that can help enhance the experience.

If the passion for something was once there in the past, it can be found again but we need to feel like the journey is worth it. For cooking, whether alone or with family & friends, there are many ways to embrace the process and make it special.

Let’s start with the planning of meals. The woman that I mentioned above did the right thing: get some inspiration from new recipes.

Nothing too challenging however, as you may derail yourself from your plan. By making mealtime exciting through new menu items for your home, passion can easily be rediscovered.

When you eat out, wheat kind of food do you usually order?

Maybe choose a regional cuisine that you have always wanted to learn, like Italian, or Vietnamese, for example. I love perusing through second-hand stores to find old cookbooks focused on types of recipes I have never made before. Obviously, the internet is also overflowing with many recipe ideas as well.

The next place to focus on would be your cooking equipment and the kitchen itself. Treat yourself to a new quality chef knife, a beautiful wood cutting board, and/or some decent cookware.

Depending on your budget, this can really help encourage you to get back into the kitchen.

Also take the time to declutter. Go through your kitchen and get rid of things that you don’t use, or at least tuck them away.

Find ways to get your kitchen more Chef Dez organized and that will breathe new life into this space and make it feel more enjoyable to be in there. If you have the time, money, and the know-how, maybe a fresh coat of paint, new cupboards, or new countertops are in order.

Shopping for ingredients can also lead to inspiration. Take your blinders off and real-

experts in their departments, and they will know what’s popular.

During the cooking process, make sure you put on your favourite music. This really helps in uplifting your mood in almost any situation.

When I cook, I take the time to chop and portion out everything in advance of the actual cooking process. This gives me an opportunity to thoroughly enjoy cooking without feeling rushed or stressed out from recipe timing pressures.

When it comes to finally sitting down and enjoying your creations, make sure you take the time and effort to treat yourself right. Pour that glass of wine, light those candles, and use your best plate ware and cutlery. Cloth napkins are also a must as they add a more refined feel to the dining process. Take your time while eating and really enjoy every bite.

Sometimes we get in habits of buying the same old ingredients we always buy, and our shopping cart looks about the same on every trip. Produce sections are a great place to start because the selections are often vast, and then move onto the imported foods aisle, and then the butcher and seafood counters. Talk to the employees in each of these areas and get some recommendations from them as they are the

visual appearance of your dish, smell the aromas, and focus on the flavours and textures when eating.

Lastly, the cleanup. No one likes the residual mess of dishes after any cooking adventure, so my best advice is to keep that music playing... and perhaps another glass of wine wouldn’t hurt either.

In Saskatchewan the third leg of the threelegged economic stool has been agriculture.

Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Crop Report for Oct. 1 to 7, reported only 55 per cent of the crop was in the bin.

While up from 47 per cent a week earlier it remained well behind the five-year (2014-18) average of 82 per cent for the same time of year.

A look at the severe snow storms hitting Manitoba over the Thanksgiving weekend, and the generally dreary weather in Saskatchewan does not bode well for getting the rest of the crop in the bin, not to mention the likelihood of reduced grades for crop still in the field, and the farmer costs of drying grain. The situation in agriculture could well go from being an economic asset to Prairie provincial governments to a sector in need of financial aid given the 2019 harvest conditions.

The triple whammy will definitely put some pressure on provincial budgets and in terms of local economies as well.

Tire maintenance keeps drivers safe Maintaining tires is an important component of safe driving. Tires are some of the hardest working parts on a car or truck and are subjected to wear and tear every time rubber meets the road.

Tires affect many components of driving, including handling, braking and the comfort of the ride. Maintaining tires makes driving safe not only for drivers and their passengers, but also for fellow motorists.

Poor tire maintenance can lead to premature wear and potentially result in a blowout. It is important to visually inspect tires as often as possible. Drivers should look for overall tread wear. Pay special attention to tread wear on one edge of the tires, which could indicate poor alignment. Erratic tread wear may mean tires are out of balance.

Drivers also should pay attention to how their

cars drive and sounds.

Unusual vibration or thumping noises suggest issues with the tires.

A car that pulls in one direction also may be experiencing tire problems.

Vehicle owners should be aware of the routine maintenance steps that can keep them safe and improve the life expectancy of tires. â&#x20AC;˘ Tire pressure: Only 19 per cent of consumers properly check and inflate their tires. Keeping tires properly inflated is one of the most important steps to maintaining them. Tires lose around 1 psi per month, and underinflated or overinflated tires can contribute to unusual wear, blowouts and even excessive fuel consumption. â&#x20AC;˘ Rotation: Check the ownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s manual or recommendations from the tire manufacturer, but know that most mechanics advise having tires rotated every 5,000 to

8,000 miles. Rotation helps distribute wear more evenly on tires. â&#x20AC;˘ Balancing: Balancing also helps minimize uneven wear and tear. Balanced tires are achieved by using small weights attached to the wheels to limit vibration of the tire and wheels as they turn. New tires should be balanced, and tires also should be balanced after one or more is removed to repair a puncture. â&#x20AC;˘ Alignment: Vehicles have wheel alignment measurements that pertain to manufacturersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; specifications. Alignment that falls outside of the range can impact handling, fuel economy and tread wear. A drift or pull suggests alignment problems and should be addressed.

Vehicle owners should keep tire inspection and maintenance in mind as part of their overall car care plan.

Low visibility during inclement weather increases the chance of a crash. Drivers should take steps to improve visibility by taking precautions. their local forecast and make a plan for what to do if rain, snow or other conditions make it challenging to drive.

The likelihood of a crash increases during periods of low visibility, despite the tendency for less traffic and for lower speeds to prevail during these times.

Drivers can take several steps to improve their visibility when driving in poor weather conditions.

• Inspect and change windshield wiper blades.

Wipers are instrumental in clearing precipitation away from the windshield. If they’re not functioning properly, wipers cannot do their jobs. Drivers should replace their wipers at the first indication that they are no longer effective. In some conditions, wipers can freeze or stick. Drivers should then pull over and clean the wipers manually.

• Clear obstructions.

Always make sure the windshield is clear before driving. This can include removing ice and snow in the winter and cleaning off mud or bug splatter in the spring and summer. Use the front and rear defrost if condensation fogs up windshields and windows.

• Slow down. Foul weather can reduce drivers’ ability to see far into the distance.

Drivers should always drive slower in inclement weather in order to improve reaction time.

• Top off fluids. Always keep the windshield washer reservoir full and keep extra fluid in the trunk. In addition, look for a fluid that does not freeze in very cold temperatures.

• Learn how to drive in fog. Each year, more than 38,700 vehicle crashes occur in fog, states the Federal Highway Administration.

Travelers Insurance recommends slowing down, staying focused and using regular headlights and not high beams when driving in fog.

• Go out only if necessary. In snowy or icy conditions, drive only if it’s absolutely necessary, as snow and ice can impair visibility and make roads slick, says AAA. • Avoid driving at dusk and dawn. The human eye can have trouble adjusting to rapidly changing light and darkness conditions, which are common at dusk and dawn. If possible, drivers should make trips during the heart of the day, especially if poor lighting conditions typically make it difficult for them to drive.

Drivers can take steps to improve visibility when inclement weather makes roadways hard to navigate.

Job growth remains strong in Saskatchewan Saskatchewan saw its 14th consecutive month of job growth in September, with year-over-year employment rising by 13,300 jobs, an increase of 2.3 per cent.

Female employment increased by 4,200 (+1.6 per cent) and off-reserve Aboriginal employment increased by 4,900 (+10.7 per cent). Monthto-month employment also rose by 600 jobs from August 2019.

The unemployment rate was 5.3 per cent in September (seasonally adjusted), down from 6.3 per cent a year ago.

Saskatchewan had the

fourth lowest unemployment rate in the country (tied with Ontario), below the national average of 5.5 per cent.

“Saskatchewan experienced record highs in terms of employment in the month of September, in spite of external factors contributing to ongoing economic uncertainties,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said. “Our government will continue working hard to ensure Saskatchewan people have the ability to work and contribute to the growth

of our great province.”

Other September highlights include: • An all-time high was recorded for the working-age population (891,200), and a record high for the month of September for labour force (588,600); • Major year-over-year gains were reported for educational services up 3,900 jobs, manufacturing up 3,600 jobs and other services up 3,200 jobs; and • Aboriginal youth employment was up 1,000 jobs (+11.0 per cent).

While many parents may go to great lengths to ensure their youngstersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Halloween treats offer at least a little nutritional value, the bulk of costumed

Pumpkin seeds are one delicious yet often overlooked Halloween treat.

Pumpkin seeds provide a host of health benefits.

A single cup of pumpkin seeds can provide as

much as 22 per cent of a personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daily recommended value of dietary fiber. In addition, pumpkin seeds are loaded with vitamin K, which plays a role in blood clotting and bone metabolisms and helps to regulate blood calcium levels.

Pumpkin seeds tend to be easily accessible come Halloween, as theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re right inside the pumpkins many who celebrate this ghoulish holiday turn into jack-oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;-lanterns. When carving pumpkins this Halloween, people can forgo relegating pumpkin seeds to the garbage can in favor of cooking them.

To avoid such changes, make sure the seeds are not roasted for more than 20 minutes.

Once they have been roasted, pumpkin seeds can be served as-is as a delicious snack. Seeds also can be sprinkled into mixed green salads.

Pumpkin seeds can even be ground with fresh garlic, parsley and cilantro leaves and then mixed with olive oil and lemon juice to create a delicious salad dressing. Chopped pumpkin seeds also can be added to cereals.

(NC) While most people associate allergy season with the warmer months, many donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t realize that allergy symptoms and triggers can be even more prevalent as the weather cools.

Colder weather means more time spent indoors, and therefore increased exposed to the number one cause of allergies in the home: household dust.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air quality can be up to five times worse than outdoor air quality, so the importance of mitigating exposure to household allergens is even more vital during the cooler months.

Reduce exposure to indoor allergens in your home with these simple tips: 1.) Properly maintain your heating system: Heating systems are constantly circulating

indoor air, which means dust, pet dander and pollen can collect inside the unit and recirculate throughout the home.

Combat this issue by ensuring routine inspections by an HVAC technician and change the filter on a regular basis to decrease air pollution risks.

2.) Avoid indoor air contaminants: Many common household items can pose risks to indoor air quality. Fireplaces, candles, scented plug-ins, soaps, cosmetics and aerosol sprays are some of the commonly used products that can negatively impact indoor air quality. A study recently published by Science Magazine revealed that these common items can cause as much pollution as car emissions.

3.) Use an indoor air purifier: Purifiers can use intelligent sensors

to automatically sense pollutants and allergens.

The machine captures 99.97 per cent of microscopic allergens and pollutants as small as 0.3 microns, including particulate matter, bacteria, pollen and mould, and projects clean air throughout a whole room.

4.) Allow outdoor air ventilation: Many of us keep windows and doors shut tight to â&#x20AC;&#x153;keep the heat in,â&#x20AC;? but proper ventilation is key to providing fresh air to your home. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety lists four main purposes of ventilation: providing a continuous supply of fresh outside air; helping maintain temperature and humidity at comfortable levels; reducing fire or explosion hazards; and help remove or dilute airborne contaminants.

John was predeceased by his parents Fred and Nettie Maybuck and his in-laws George and Kate Ermolenko; his brother Edward Maybuck; his uncle and aunt Steve and Rosie Maybook, his cousin Mary Mirosovsky, her son Jeff and son-in-law Mike Morris; his brother-in-law Dale Brown.

Funeral Service was held Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of St. John The Baptist, North Battleford, SK with Very Reverend Father Bohdan Demczuk officiating, The Cross Bearer – Rodney Mirosovsky, Altar Server – John Sendecki and Cantor – Jim Shevchuk. Honorary Pallbearers were all who shared in John’s life.

Active Pallbearers were Jim Cook, Jeffrey Cook, Ryley Graw, Dustin Brown, Barry Maybuck and Kevin Domashovitz. Interment took place at Cando Cemetery, Cando, SK. John attended the country school Bowmore which was just across the field to the west of the farm. Later for high school he rode the school bus to Cando. Following high school he attended the University of Saskatchewan for two years where he received a diploma from the School of Agriculture.

John became a passionate and dedicated grain farmer. He relished the smell of the freshly cultivated

land in the spring and the dusty choking air of harvest. He was a fixer of things and loved to tinker.

Besides farming, which was his first love, he enjoyed many other activities – hunting, fishing, softball and curling. He truly loved watching boxing, hockey and the Riders on television. Auction sales were also part of his life, and each spring he awaited the arrival of various auction brochures.

Coffee Row at the Cando Store was a favorite hang out. This is where the farming and world problems were discussed and the most exciting game of “Numbers” was played.

Western Country and Ukrainian music were his favorite. He especially enjoyed watching his grandkids Ukrainian dance and attended many of their recitals and competitions. John was a sociable person and enjoyed visiting whether it was at home or elsewhere. In the last four years his three Great grandchildren Sadie, Luke, and Emma Grace became an important part of his life. Life wasn’t easy for John when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at the age of 55 and had to endure 25 years of the disease which changed him both physically and mentally.

On May the 8th he moved into the Battleford District Care Centre.

Donations in John’s memory can be made to Royal University Hospital Foundation (designate to Dr. Ali and Dr. Alex Rajput Endowment for Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorder Research), 103 Hospital Drive, Saskatoon, SK S7N 0W8 or Battlefords Union Hospital Foundation, Box 1358, North Battleford, SK S9A 3L8.

Oilers big winners in one-sided trade Colour this trade ‘red’, as in Flames’ embarrassment and James Neal causing goal lights to flash.

The red faces of Calgary Flames’ management over the Nealfor-Milan Lucic trade are close to matching the colour of the team’s sweaters.

It’s almost as if Edmonton Oilers general manager Ken Holland found some magic beans, climbed the beanstalk and wound up with a big pot of gold coins.

Lucic was sent to Calgary during the summer in exchange for Neal in a swap of two under-performers.

And how has it gone so far? Through two weeks, if you checked the NHL stats under ‘goals’, you’d see Neal was No. 1. He scored seven in Edmonton’s first five games, including a four-goal outing at home against New York Islanders.

Under ‘penalty minutes’, Lucic was No. 1, with 26, in Calgary’s first five games. Lucic also had zero goals and zero assists in that period, but he did have 16 hits to rank among the NHL’s top 20.

The trade made some sense on the day it was made. Neither Neal nor Lucic did much offensively to help their teams last year, and both carried the weight of monster contracts. The feeling was that fresh starts and new scenery were needed for both. Neal had arrived in Calgary as a free agent one year earlier with the reputation of a serious sniper (10

seasons of 20-plus goals, including a 40-goal campaign with Pittsburgh in 2011-12). For a variety of reasons, nothing clicked and he wound up in coach Bill Peters’ doghouse.

The Flames, meanwhile, said Lucic’s hardnosed, grinding style was something the team was Bruce Penton missing and

he showed off that side in Game 1 of the new season when he suckerpunched Colorado’s Nikita Zadorov after the Avalanche player crushed Flames 5-foot9, 160-pound Austin Czarnik into the boards.

Peters was also hoping Lucic might rediscover his scoring touch; after all, he has had a 30-goal season and four others of 20-plus goals in his NHL career before potting only 10 and then six in his last two seasons with the Oilers.

If the first two weeks of the season are any indication, this is one of the most one-sided sports trades in history.

How to prepare youngsters for their first hunting trip

A young person’s first hunting trip can be an incredible experience, sparking a lifelong love and appreciation for nature and wildlife.

Parents who grew up hunting likely remember their first hunting trip and want to recreate that experience for their own children.

As memorable as a first hunting trip can be, parents of current youngsters might not recall all the pre-trip preparation their own folks did to make that first hunting experience so memorable. Such preparation can ensure today’s youngsters enjoy the same magical experience their parents did when going hunting for the first time.

• Make sure kids are ready. Kids’ maturity levels merit consideration before taking them hunting for the first time.

Children may experience a range of emotions on their first hunting trips. Such emotions can include excitement, nervousness, sadness, and/ or guilt. Parents should assess their children’s maturity levels prior to announcing a trip to make sure they’re ready for that emotional roller coaster. Kids mature at their own pace, so assess each child individually, resisting the temptation to assume one child is ready at a given age because an older sibling was ready at the same age. Parents should first take their youngsters along as hunting apprentices, which allows them to participate in the rituals of the hunt while their parents can gauge how mature they are to handle the hunt itself.

• Make sure kids can handle their guns. Kids should know how to load

and unload, check the chamber and turn the safety on and off. Kids should be confident with their guns, feeling comfortable enough to pull their firearms to their shoulders, get the gun’s sights on the animal and pull the trigger.

• Temper youngsters’ expectations. Hunting is a rewarding hobby, but also one that requires a lot of work. Weather also can be unpleasant during hunting season, and that can quickly spoil youngsters’ impressions of hunting. Temper kids’ expectations in advance of a hunting trip so they know it won’t necessarily be all fun. In addition, let children know many hunting trips end without a kill.

• Focus on the fun factor. Young hunters are more excited to have fun and enjoy quality outdoor time than they are by the prospect of bagging and taking home a trophy animal. Parents should focus on the fun and the beauty of nature when taking youngsters hunting to ensure kids have as good a time as possible.

Some pre-trip preparation on the part of moms and dads can make youngsters’ first hunting trips successful.
