Students from BCS and St. Gabriel schools learned about fire safety, October 13. The kids learned what fire fighters must wear and what they can do to help keep themselves safe. Kids were taken through a simulated fire - a maze, to impress upon them the importance of staying low and finding a way out of a burning building. Fire fighters handed out goodie bags and novelty helmets, all to celebrate Fire Safety Week.

Lisa Brokop kicks off Biggar Arts Council 2016/17 season

Country music artist, Lisa Brokop, begins the Biggar and District Arts Council season at the Majestic Theatre, October 28, with her tribute to Patsy Cline.

It’s not often – in fact, some might say very rare – for an artist to have an enduring musical career. In a day and age when most artists barely flicker for a moment before fading out of the spotlight, Brokop is set to celebrate 20 remarkable years of singing, songwriting and performing.

“I love what I do,” says Brokop. “Every note I sing, whether in the studio or from the stage, is true. It hasn’t always been an easy road. There have been many curves, bumps and detours. But really, it is the love of the music that motivates each step I take in the business. It keeps me moving forward. And I think fans feel and appreciate that love.”

Brokop’s love affair with performing began in suburban Vancouver, British Columbia. As a baby, it was clear to her parents that she was special - she was singing before she could talk! By the age of 7, she was on stage with her musical mother and brother, performing everything from polkas to Kenny Rogers’ classics.

By age 12, she was sitting in with other Vancouver bands, and went professional at age 15 when she joined a touring band.

At the age of 19, Brokop landed the lead female role in the feature film ‘Harmony Cats’. The movie, in which Lisa plays a country singer who leaves

home in search of a big break in Nashville, proved to be prophetic. Shortly after filming wrapped, and on the strength of her very first Nashville showcase, Brokop was signed to Capitol Records. Over the next three years, she released two critically acclaimed albums, the Canadian-certified Gold record ‘Every Little Girls Dream’ and the self-titled ‘Lisa Brokop’, which

garnered hits such as “Give Me a Ring Sometime,” “Take That,” “Before He Kissed Me,”and “She Can’t Save Him.” In 1995, the prestigious Academy of Country Music recognized Lisa with an award nomination for Top New Female Vocalist.

For her latest, Brokop has put together the new musical venture, “Lisa Brokop: The Patsy Cline Project”.

Brokop will be paying homage to one of country music’s greatest ladies with some of Cline’s classic hits like “Sweet Dreams” and “Walkin’ After Midnight” as well as some of her own material specifically written for the project.

“I’ll be coming full circle with this project,” Brokop says. “When I first started singing, I would sing some of Patsy’s song because I didn’t have my own. They are still among some of my favourites today and I am so excited to have the opportunity to honour this amazing lady and the incredible music she gave us!”

Lisa Brokop will play the Majestic Theatre this October 28 at 7:30 p.m.

Credit Unions collect for Hurricane Matthew The Canadian Red Cross and Saskatchewan credit unions announced that, effective immediately, cash donations to help those affected by Hurricane Matthew will be accepted at participating Saskatchewan credit unions until November 12, 2016.

“The Red Cross is thrilled to once again partner with Saskatchewan credit unions so that the people of Saskatchewan can help those

affected by Hurricane Matthew,” said Cindy Fuchs, Vice-President of the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan, October 13.

More than one million people have been affected and hundreds of thousands are in need of humanitarian assistance.

One of the strongest hurricanes to hit the Caribbean in recent history, Matthew’s torrential rains and winds have flooded towns and roads,

destroyed homes and buildings and collapsed one of the main bridges to the southwest of Haiti, making the worst affected areas extremely difficult to reach.

Haitians have been left in extremely vulnerable conditions, with early indications of heavy flooding and extensive damage to housing, infrastructure and crops.

There will be a great need for healthcare and access to clean drinking

water, as the potential for waterborne illnesses and disease outbreaks will be high following heavy rains and flooding.

In addition to Haiti, Red Cross response teams in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, the Bahamas and the United States have also been mobilized to provide assistance as the powerful storm tears through the region and moves north.

Make sure you mark your ballot I’m not sure when we last had a civic election in Biggar. Someone said it was about 16 years ago. It sure is great to see such an interest being taken in town council. It shows that people really care about the direction of our community. The voters will have a tough decision to make when marking their ballot next Wednesday.

Of course, when you get people vying for positions there are bound to be many different viewpoints. One comment I heard was that “so and so has an agenda.” Well, that may be true but the fact is they feel strong enough in their conviction to put their name forward.

All of the candidates are somebody’s neighbour, friend or relative. In their own hearts they feel they have something to offer. It is up to you, the voter, to decide if the candidates share your particular ideals.

Seek them out and ask them what their goals are, their future vision.

Don’t listen to gossip.

Give all the candidates credit for putting their name forward. It takes courage to stand up and be willing to put yourself under scrutiny.

Releasing the first quarter update is an easy fix for a silly mistake

by Todd MacKay When a car spins out of control the driver never thinks about the times a seatbelt wasn’t really necessary.

The vast majority of government transparency is routine, but, on the odd occasion, it’s critically important.

The Saskatchewan government says it’s withholding its first quarter budget update this year. That’s a mistake. The government has a responsibility to provide transparency.

For more than a decade, the provincial government has let taxpayers know what’s happening with their money every three months. It’s the same routine reporting publicly traded companies and Crown corporations provide.

Most of the time the quarterly updates are little more than insomnia cures.

But sometimes the first quarter update is jarring.

Saskatchewan was cruising to an operational surplus (although it planned to borrow $700 million for infrastructure) when the province released its 2015-16 budget. Then the

first quarter update landed with a thud on Aug. 31, 2016.

“Without any action, a $292-million deficit is projected for 2015-16,” stated the first quarter update.

The Saskatchewan government was acknowledging an operational deficit for the first time in years. Sadly, despite this early warning, the first quarter forecast became much worse in reality.

“Saskatchewan finished 2015-16 with a $675-million deficit,” stated the province when it released the final numbers.

The province says its cancelling the first quarter update this year because the budget was late and the numbers haven’t changed much. That’s nonsense. The newly elected Manitoba government released its budget 24 hours prior to Saskatchewan and still managed to produce a first quarter update. Even if there’s nothing exciting to report, the government still has the responsibility to provide transparency.

The first quarter update is more

sounded by one problematic first quarter, such as last year’s report, makes it worth the effort to produce dozens of routine updates. A quick look at our Western neighbours shows that setting the precedence that its acceptable to neglect this basic transparency would be dangerous.

Alberta has legislation requiring the finance minister to provide financial updates every quarter – complete with hard deadlines. The Alberta budget projected an operational deficit of $10.4 billion and the first quarter update shows that projection rising to $10.9 billion. No doubt Alberta Premier Rachel Notley could avoid some criticism if her predecessors had gotten rid of that legislation and started skipping first quarter updates.

Premier Brad Wall has acknowledged mistakes in the past. He’s made a virtue out of fixing them. This mistake is easy to fix. Ministry of Finance officials are routinely tracking and updating these numbers internally. Just release the first quarter update.

“We are commencing a governmentwide process of transformational change,” said Finance Minister Kevin Doherty in his budget address. “Our goal is to ensure the sustainability of high quality public services delivered in the most efficient, cost effective way possible.”

The government promised this “transformational change” will deliver a balanced operational budget next year.

It may well be true the first quarter budget update wouldn’t show much change in the actual numbers for the first three months, but surely the projections would show some evidence of progress toward this promised transformational change. If so, the government should take credit for the hard work. If the province’s spending is on a deficit trajectory, taxpayers have the right to hold their elected officials accountable.

There’s also a principle that extends beyond this year. The early warning

Save those humble spires

It was a sunny Saturday in September when I met my cousins (one from Calgary and one from Edmonton) in Kindersley and we continued south to Leader.

Our destination was to visit the historic church of Blumenfeld which has numerous family connections for our family.

We grew up on stories of Blumenfeld Church (also known as Sts. Peter and Paul) in the days when everyone attended church. The church was the centre of social activity. Sundays people gathered for services and then after would

Let’s face it, these churches were built in the 1800s and there is bound to be some wear and tear over the years.

There are those who say these old buildings are not worth saving. But there is value in the walls of these structures. The materials, for example, are high quality. “Real� wood, some of them rare were often used in construction. The interiors often have furniture that has been intricately carved. This is an ancient art and shows how talented the people were.

Besides, there are often hidden gems to be found: a stained glass window, rare hardwoods, or maybe copper and gold.

Historic buildings attract people.

The thing about tearing down an historic building -- once it’s gone, you can never get it back.

by Madeline Ellard On Friday, October 7, our Blazers football team took on Rosetown in the annual Under the Lights game where we unfortunately lost.

Cross Country Districts took place in Eston on Tuesday, the 11th, with provincials taking place on the 15th with Barry Falcon and Alex Hinse attending and running well.

Some students from Grades 8-12 attended the SunWest leadership seminar on the 11th in Rosetown.

They learned about the different leadership opportunity in the SunWest School Division such as Team SunWest

and youth consultation.

On Wednesday, the 12th our

Junior Girls Volleyball Team travelled to Perdue and played Perdue’s

Junior Girls team where our Blazers won three out of four sets.

Last weekend our Senior A Girls Volleyball team hosted their home tournament, losing in a

close match to Luseland in the B final.

While the A team was busy at home, the Senior Girls B team travelled to Eston where they had a great time playing against some very evenly matched teams.

The Senior Boys were off to Dinsmore on Saturday, playing well and bringing home the gold.

The Grade 4-6 students are enjoying Pee Wee volleyball and hope to see more students involved now that the cross country season has ended.

In the elementary end our Grades 1-6 had a presentation by the Fire Department on the 13th to recognize fire safety week. They learned about how to safely leave a burning building, and even got to practise their skills in a maze that the firefighters prepared for them.

But really enjoying a good meal is what counts.

Far be it from Yours Truly giving a snear to either request.

“Quail a la” or a “bottle of beer” for we aren’t very connoisseur like out here in Saskatchewan.

Y.T. has to admit that to many Canadians, an order of “roast chestnut” appeals a lot more, but we Westerner or “barred rock” tastes much the same.

There may be a few gourmets among the people who read this, but Yours Truly defies them all to tell the difference, especially if Phyllis has fried them both.

When one of Y.T.’s cousins and he were batching in the winter of 1987, he brought in a couple of bush partridge one evening and after roughly ripping their breasts off, fried them and we ate like the kings of some European Riviera.

“I’d sure like to wrap my lips around a big serving of truffle,” says a well read guy on the construction crews where we were working south of Edmonton. “They say that truffle is kind of rare out here, and sells for fifty dollars a pound.”

“Blah,” exclaims another equally well read guy.

“We dug up a piece of it when we were building our cottage at the lake, and I wouldn’t give fifty cents a ton for that stuff.”

There must be an aristocratic branch of our society that believes the more one pays for food the better it tastes. So much for caviar and all that high class stuff.

Far from being a connoisseur of any kind, Y.T. has tried making a few of his own meals and “blah” is too nice a word to be wasted on some of them.

Family legend says that one of our own uncles, as a young boy in Ontario, shot a sparrow with a slingshot. The legend also says that he plucked it, cleaned it, stuffed it, roasted it and ate it. The

legend doesn’t record whether he enjoyed eating it or not, but just processing it slows some of the enthusiasm some young people have.

Roasted sparrow may have its special taste, family record don’t say.

But nothBob Mason ing can compare to that boxful of maple sugar, that our Eastern relatives sent out to us each spring. Y.T. isn’t exactly sure how they made that stuff but if “yum” is an expression of elegance, then maple sugar is “yum yum.” Every dessert for a week was topped up with a generous portion of maple syrup, and we’ll never forget it.

Of course most of the trees that made maple syrup, are gone now and most of the people who sent that maple sugar to us are only family memories. Yet whenever, Y.T. downs a mouthful of it, he wonders why the folks ever came West.

Making whittles from the schoolyard poplar trees often left the bitter taste of “ugh.” Poplar sap in our mouths, and Y.T. sure won’t forget that (ugh again). Maybe the native people had a secret formula when they used it, but after downing a small bit of that stuff, it’s no wonder that some of them were called a “brave”.

On account of this column being about meals, maybe a fellow should mention a few of the odd ones we had during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

We can’t all be millionaires gulping gallons of caviar in their high class island estates. I do know that a lot of the refugees who came to our part of the world in the 1920s didn’t have very much.’

Living not too far from the North Saskatchewan River, we often felt it almost a privilege to visit them sometimes. Some of them lived in little shacks along the river hills, and almost everything that they owned was made from the nearby trees.

Notable Notes

Mother and Y.T. went to see “Taras” (John) and his wife Olga one time.

“Olga,” says John in his broken English, “get some butter for Mr. and Mrs. Mason.”

“Taras,” she said, also in broken English. “You know that we never have butter. Mrs. Mason, have some of this,” and she offered us a bowlful of cottage cheese.

There were sure some odd dishes on that 1930 menu. And it was a case of just eating what you had.

One time, while picking a few berries along the river hills, Yours Truly called on a couple of those “squatters” who served me a gourmet plate of fish. Boy it was good. But later on, when we visited Nick’s illegal fish trap in the river, Y.T. darn near threw up when he carried a pail of fish with no scales.

Y.T. isn’t a darn bit ashamed to tell about some of the things we ate. Although that “we’ve got company, throw another gopher in the stew,” exaggeration is just that, an exaggeration. Puff balls (in season) and friend in butter were sure good, although some folks claim that they are poisonous.

Grouse, rabbits and all kinds of berries and a few vegetables from their small (creek irrigated) gardens, were all part of our diet until we moved away.

Maybe, during World War II we didn’t learn very much else, but we did find out that, if he is scared enough, a fellow can survive a few days with very little to eat.

When we went into the Hochwald Forest in February 1945, every man was issued with a small can of “spam” and a few soda biscuits. Although the cooks couldn’t get up to us for three days, we had a lot of it leftover when we came out. Even some of the POW’s rye bread tasted not bad at times.

We have 100 Canada 150 tulips to plant. I sure hope we get some warming trends soon.

The tulips are part of the town-wide celebration of Canada’s 150 years of Confederation. Expect all kinds of entertainment for family fun coming up here in Biggar, July 1, 2017.

The museum’s Culture Day exhibit and presentation, Past Forward: Artifact to App, is now over. From our archives, we amassed a collection of artifacts that are now replaced by apps on our smart phones. Schools were invited and 125 students came to see the progress in technology the community of Biggar has experienced. They were all pretty in awe to realize that a room full of equipment, is now all replaced by one little handheld device. On Saturday, October 1 we opened the doors and

invited the public in for tea and cookies and a chance to see the exhibit.

The students were asked, “So what will come after the smartphone?” Many seemed to think something would be on our body. These students are our future inventors, idealists and explorers, the future is in their hands.

I would like to share with you now some results of the 1015 (2013 data) Government of Canada Survey of Heritage Institutions. Did you know that approximately $10 million is donated yearly to Canadian Museums? Did you know that Canadian museums have over four million visitors including two million online visits a year? Canadian museums are stewards for 10.8 million objects.

Museums provide a place to learn about the community and its heritage.

As well, museums provide an opportunity to promote cultural understanding. We, at the Biggar Museum and Gallery, get over 3,000 visits a year and we steward over 10,000 artifacts.

Museums contribute to the local economy -- staff pay taxes and purchase goods and services.

Museums attract tour-

ists and they make purchases and use services.

Museums contribute to the community’s sense of price and they contribute to the quality of life in a community, a part of what makes a place a home. Our town is a welcome supporter of our museum and the Biggar Museum and Gallery has an important role in the history, sustainability and progress of our community. A small but important cog in the great Canadian wheel.

So, why have museums, why preserve our past?

Did you know that in London, England, right now a huge dig is going on to extend their underground transportation system? The archeologists are very busy because this site is uncovering hundreds of years of history. They are finding documents, skeletons, burial sites, and all these finds are leading to so much research and knowledge about the past. Don Walker, Senior Human Osteologist at the Museum of London Archaeology said this, “It is very important we take time to study our past . . . The more we learn about our past, the more we know who we are, the more we can understand

Fine balance between predator and farm gate 16103LME

It’s an old story that is again beginning to play out with a new chapter in Saskatchewan.

The story is about predatory animals and farmers. The two simply have never got along.

Predators are generally smart, at least among animals. They have to be to survive by tracking prey. And that inherent ability has meant predators, cougars and wolves, even smaller ones such as foxes and coyotes, come rather quickly to

realize domestic livestock is easy to catch, and that makes farms pretty much a corner diner for lunch.

This is not new. It’s a situation which has led to many predatory species being eradicated completely from huge areas. Wolves, for example, were hunted to extinction in Britain, by sometime in the 1800s, the year a bit fuzzy based on reported single sightings apparently.

Thankfully here in Canada we never got to the

point of hunting our predators to extinction, although foxes and coyotes still harry farmyard chickens on occasion, although that is less an issue as few farmers keep a flock for their own eggs these days.

Wolves however, can still pose a problem.

They have always been the biggest problem in terms of wild animals and farming, or at least it seems that way.

When wolves kill a calf or a ewe, the results are obvious, the loss immediate, and quite quantifiable.

One suspects the loss to deer eating crops in summer and hay stored in winter actually cause a higher loss in terms of real cash value, not to mention far more deer are hit and killed on highways than wolves, and such accidents have a cost in terms of vehicle damage too.

And let’s not forget the damage from migratory waterfowl as they eat themselves fat on the farmers grain as they head south for the winter.

But in Canada at least, and on the Prairies in particular, deer and geese have far better public relations going for them, as they are something we have traditionally hunted for food. Hunting is still very much a part of our culture, not the extent it was even a quarter of a century ago, but still practised by many.

Those many hunters also spend considerable dollars in the pursuit and those ripple through the economy and that is a factor in the good PR of hunt species too.

So the recent announcement the Ministry of Environment is again offering a wolf hunting season for wildlife management zones along the provincial forest fringe as a method for helping to reduce wolf-livestock conflicts, hasn’t Continued on page 9

The situation is as old as man domesticating the first goat or sheep I’m sure, but at least here we still have a wolf population to find balance with, which is ultimately a good thing in my books.

Boy, Auston Matthews sure knows how to do a debut!

Not content to open his National Hockey League career with a two-goal game or even a hat trick, the No. 1 overall selection by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016 exploded onto the NHL scene with four goals in his first regularseason game.

The 19-year-old, who played professionally in Switzerland’s best league last year under the coaching guidance of former NHL bench boss Marc Crawford (currently an assistant with Ottawa), entered the NHL with Connor McDavidlike acclaim, but finished his first game with the Leafs in fans’ eyes as a hybrid of Wayne Gretzky, Gordie Howe and Marlin the Magician.

To the average Leafs’ fan, who has been waiting since 1967 for another Stanley Cup, Matthews’ debut was like Christmas morning and winning Lotto 649, all bundled into one magical night.

Not shockingly, perhaps, the Leafs still lost their opener, 5-4 in overtime to the hometown Senators, proving that no single player can transform a bad team into a power overnight.

But Matthews will try, as will McDavid, who had six points in his first two games as the Edmonton Oilers swept Calgary Flames to open the 2016-17 season.

McDavid didn’t come close to scoring four goals in his first NHL game. McDavid, in fact, told NHL.com that “I think in my first game I touched the puck four times.”

It was the first four-goal game by a player in his first game in the modern era of the NHL. Judging by the way he handled the puck and worked with fellow youngsters William Nylander and Mitch Marner, it certainly won’t be the last. That trio, along with thirdyear defenceman Morgan Rielly, form a strong base on which the Leafs can build a contending

team.

Toronto is still a light year or two away from challenging for a Stanley Cup, but for 82 games until mid-April, they’re going to be a fun team to watch.

Problem is, Matthews was on a 328goal season pace after Game 1, and on a 164-goal pace after he went scoreless in Toronto’s second game. and he’s Bruce Penton going to fall far short of those numbers after 82 games have been played.

But can we at least award him the Rookieof-the-Month for October?

Book Fair news The school community provided excellent support to the LAS Book Fair.

The Book Fair was held in conjunction with the SCC Meet the Staff barbecue.

It was so wonderful to see so many students and families excited about this event. The Book Fair was a huge success due to the work of our volunteers: Sarah Kowalchuk, Lisa Rush, Nadia Jobs and Emma Fleischfresser. Without them, the fair wouldn’t be possible.

All proceeds will go towards purchasing new resources for the library.

I know everyone at the Lodge is wondering when everything will dry up. We want to see the children out in their costumes and not in their snowsuits when Halloween comes around.

Monday at the Lodge

was Thanksgiving. Time for when family and friends spent the day together.

Tuesday was current events. In the afternoon we played Scattergories.

Wednesday morning we had T-ball. We were practicing to join the Blue Jays. In the afternoon we had a wine and cheese. We served different kinds of wines and

cheeses.

Thursday was Bible Study, exercises and bingo.

Friday morning was Barbecue Club. Shuffleboard in the afternoon.

Dot bingo and a movie was on Saturday.

Sunday was one-to-one time and the Jantzens for church.

2016 harvest stalls due to weather Heavy rain and snow over the past several days has stalled harvest.

Eighty-one per cent of the 2016 crop is combined and 15 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report for the October 4 to 10 period. The fiveyear (2011-2015) average for this time of year is 93 per cent combined.

The southeast has 89 per cent of the harvest in the bin. Eighty-five per cent of the crop is combined in the southwest, 79 per cent in the eastcentral region, 73 per cent in the west-central, 78 per cent in the northwest and 80 per cent in the northeast. The most progress was made in combining flax and soybeans.

Over the past three weeks, harvest progress has been minimal due to wet conditions. Significant rain and snow were recorded throughout the province during this past week. The weather system started for most regions on October 2 and has continued on with rain, snow and overcast conditions up to the release of this report.

Many areas reported that at least 25 millimetres of rain before 10 to 15 centimetres of snow started falling. The Glenavon area reported 41 mm of total precipitation, Moose Jaw and Tisdale 103 mm, Lisieux 66 mm, Blumenhof 86 mm, Yorkton 75 mm, Quill Lake 97 mm, Perdue 44 mm, Cando 91 mm, Hafford 62 mm and Pierce-

land 25 mm.

Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 55 per cent surplus and 45 per cent adequate. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 32 per cent surplus and 68 per cent adequate. Field conditions are very wet, which will make harvest slow once producers get back into the field. Even with the sunny weather that is forecast, producers do not expect to be back in the field for several days.

At this time, livestock producers are indicating adequate amounts of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed grain for their winter feeding needs.

Rain and snow has lodged standing crops.

Bleaching and sprouting are causing grade loss.

I’ve got a Lovely Bunch of Coconuts What is hairy, unattractive, and available in almost every major grocery store’s produce section?

No, it’s not an unshaven Produce Manager with bedhead.

They are coconuts and more consumers tend to buy it dried or canned instead of fresh.

Who wouldn’t be somewhat afraid of this intimidating, seemingly indestructible produce with an appearance that mimics a monster’s disembodied head?

Even I must admit, more times than not, I was more interested is using them to tease my children, than I was in purchasing them. Although using whole coconuts requires a small amount of work, experimenting with this imported harvest can be very enjoyable and rewarding.

Firstly, choose ones that seem heavy for their size, as this will be an indicator of a thicker flesh content on the inside, and water volume. Also, it is important to select ones that seem to have the most liquid,

by shaking them in your hand and listening for the sound of the natural coconut water. This naturally occurring coconut liquid however, is not the same product that is available in cans or listed as “coconut milk” as an ingredient in most reciChef Dez pes. Natural coconut water is mildly sweet, naturally fat free and tends to be more prevalent in recently harvested coconuts, as it will absorb into the inner flesh as they mature.

thing to do is to drain the coconut water.

Each coconut has three “eyes” and one of them is always softer than the others. Take a metal skewer and find the softest one by piercing. Once you have determined which eye is softer press the skewer through and rotate while grinding the remainder of the eye to achieve a bigger hole.

Then shake this open eye over a glass or container until all the coconut water has been removed.

stored in the refrigerator and consumed or frozen within a 24-hour period.

If the drained liquid tastes sour, then the coconut has spoiled and it should be discarded.

Once the coconut has been drained pace it in the freezer for at least 12 hours.

Once frozen wrap it in a towel and proceed to hit it with a hammer a few times until the outer shell has cracked.

Chunks of hard shell will break away from the flesh. The towel will help to contain the chunks of shell and flesh. To prevent any possible damage to the kitchen counter, one may want to do this hammering on a very solid surface, like a cement floor.

The flesh will now be separate from the hard shell and any remaining pieces that are not can be carefully removed with a knife.

Any thin brown skin left on the extracted white flesh can be removed with a potato peeler.

The task is a bit tedious, but very rewarding if you enjoy working with raw materials in the kitchen.

The meat can now be grated, frozen, or cooked down to make the coconut milk called for in many recipes.

The Internet makes a great resource for uses of this raw flesh.

To make your own fresh coconut milk, add one cup of boiling water to one cup of packed grated fresh coconut.

Let it steep for approximately 30 to 45 minutes.

Then squeeze this mixture in a clean kitchen cloth, or strain through a fine strainer, over a bowl to capture the milk.

Alternatively, it can also be processed in a food processor and then squeezed to get even more milk from the flesh. This milk should be refrigerated, and a thick cream will rise to the surface.

May 18, 1940 - October 10, 2016 It is with much love a n d sadness that we announce the passing of Jack Frank Seidl on Monday, October 10, 2016 at the age of 76.

Jack was born on May 18, 1940 to Anton and Mary Seidl in Biggar, Sask.

H e lived in Argo and went to school in Oxborough. On December 27, 1962 he married Jane Houdek and they had two children.

He was a mechanic for over 50 years and ran his own shop. Jack was an animal lover and farmed for many years.

Jack is survived by his wife, Jane; daughter, Jackie (Dan) Duperreault, Payton and Cole; and son, Jeff (Cindy) Seidl, Brayden (Chelsey) and Bailey. He is survived by his brother, Ken (Susie) Seidl; sistersin-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Anton and Mary Seidl; his brothers, Don and Ed; and sister, Madeline.

Funeral Service was held on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11 a.m. from Biggar United Church, Biggar, Sask. with Rev. Jeannine Cline officiating.

Eulogists were Jackie Duperreault and Cindy Seidl; readers, Payton Duperreault and Bailey Seidl.

Honourary Bearers were all those who shared in Jack’s life. Active Bearers were Brayden Seidl, Bailey Seidl, Payton Duperreault and Cole Duperreault. Interment will be at a later date. Tributes may be directed in Jack’s memory to a charity of donor’s choice.

Two Saskatoon area men fined $8,400 for unlawful hunting Two men were recently fined a total of $8,400 in Saskatoon provincial court for unlawfully hunting moose in the Langham area, and a third donated $1,000 to two local charities.

The charges resulted from a call to the Ministry of Environment’s Turn In Poachers (TIP) line in November 2014.

Conservation officers from Saskatoon and North Battleford investigated the call and found a vehicle in the reported area, towing a trailer with an untagged bull moose in it. The officers interviewed the driver of the truck and trailer and also the driver of an accompanying vehicle.

It was determined the moose had been shot illegally in the area. The officers found the kill site in an area where there

was no open season for moose at that time. “The assistance of the public is invaluable as we work to protect and preserve Saskatchewan’s natural resources,� Ministry of Environment Chief of Enforcement and Investigations Ken Aube said. “Respect for the province’s hunting laws is an important component of effective wildlife management.

There wasn’t a moose season in that area at the time of the offence, nor did the hunters have a required draw moose licence for this zone. I’m confident that the penalties in this case will help deter others from this illegal type of activity.�

Steven Bullock, age 35 of Langham, pleaded guilty to unlawful hunting and unlawful possession of a moose under

The Saskatchewan Wildlife Act, and was fined a total of $5,600. Bullock received a four-year hunting licence suspension.

Gerald Honsinger, age 57 of Saskatoon, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of a moose. He received $2,800 in fines and a one-year hunting suspension.

idea to travel in groups since trails are often more remote and less travelled than roadways. Carry a first-aid kit, snacks, and a fully charged cellphone. Stick to groomed provincial trails as snow will cover floating docks, rocks, or ice heaves. You should also map out your route to prepare your food, shelter, and fuel accordingly.

2.) Clothing. Dressing in layers and wearing a wind-resistant snowsuit will help combat the cold temperatures and wind chill. Ensure that no bare

skin is exposed since frostbite can happen in mere minutes. Pack multiple pairs of gloves to keep your hands warm and dry.

3.) Riding. Controls, features, riding position, power delivery, handling, braking, and all around behaviour are unique to each machine. Ensure the sled you’re riding is in good working order by checking fluids; inspecting the skis and tread; and testing the throttle, steering, and brakes to ensure proper function.

Remember that weather and temperature can play a role in snow conditions and visibility, which can change from turn to turn.

4.) Picking the right sled. With so many options out there it may be intimidating to find what you’re looking for, so take your time to find the sled that’s right for you. Before handing over your hard-earned cash, determine what kind of riding you’ll be doing to narrow down the engine size, make model, price, and whether you’ll be buying new or used. Be realistic about what you need versus what you want.
