Fire Prevention Week was celebrated in Biggar, and a number of events were held. The Biggar Fire Department played host to a full house, October 10 for their chili supper. Good food, a chance to meet the firefighters and take a truck ride - what more could you ask for. The following day, firefighters were at Biggar Central School showing kids from BCS and St. Gabriel schools the ins and outs of the job, plus giving a few tips on how to be fire safe. Small businesses continue to drive Sask’s economy The Government of Saskatchewan is pleased to recognize the positive impact of small businesses to the province during the Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) Small Business Week, October 14 to 20.

The week is set aside every year to celebrate entrepreneurship across Canada. The theme for 2018 was Digitize now: Transform your business.

Saskatchewan has Canada’s second highest rate of small businesses - about 130 for every 1,000 people, compared to about 111 nationally.

These organizations, which have fewer than 50 employees, made up 99 per cent of all businesses in the province in 2017.

“Small businesses continue to be major players in Saskatchewan, helping to keep our economy dynamic and competitive,” Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison said.

“Through innovation and a commitment to their communities, they offer goods and services that advance the province and the quality of life of all who live here.”

In 2017, small businesses in Saskatchewan employed 31.2 per cent of the province’s workforce, paying $6.3 billion in wages and salaries and accounting for 25.6 per cent of total payroll. They also contributed almost a third of the province’s gross domestic product at 27 per cent, in the same year.

The Government of Saskatchewan continues to invest in initiatives, services and programs that

support small businesses in the province.

Some of these include: • The Saskatchewan Commercial Innovation Incentive, the first “patent box” style incentive of its kind in North America; • The Saskatchewan Technology Start-Up Incentive, which offers a 45 per cent nonrefundable tax credit for individual and corporate equity investments in eligible technology start-up businesses; • The Product2Market: Value Added incentive which helps support small-and-medium-sized agri-businesses, from product development through to marketing activities; • The Canada-Saskatchewan Job Grant, an employer-driven program which helps employers train new or existing workers to meet their specific workforce needs; • A small business income tax rate, at two per cent, for Canadiancontrolled private corporations. The rate applies to the first $600,000 of business income and is among the lowest in the country; • A highly competitive tax structure which includes tax credits for research and development, as well as for manufacturing and processing equipment expenditures; • The proclamation of the Regulatory Modernization and Accountability Act in 2013, to remove red tape that could be a road block to business, and to remove some of the barriers to growth.

Early winter weather putting harvest on hold Many producers were able to return to the field last week while others try to wait out the cold, wet weather.

Seventy-eight per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up from 73 per cent last week but behind the five-year (2013-17) average of 84 per cent for this time of year, according to the weekly crop report for the period October 2 to 8.

Wet and cool weather continues to slow progress in much of the province.

Harvest has essentially stalled in the northwest, due to a heavy snowfall earlier this week. Many areas reported snow last week, ranging from small amounts to several inches. More warm, dry and windy days are needed before producers can return to the field.

Harvest remains most

advanced in the southwest, where 90 per cent of the crop is now combined, and in the southeast, where 89 per cent is combined, but these numbers are unchanged from last week. Producers in the west-central region have 70 per cent of the crop combined and those in the northeast are 64 per cent complete. The east-central region has 63 per cent combined, while the northwestern region has 44 per cent combined.

Eighty-five per cent of durum, 81 per cent of barley, 80 per cent of mustard, 65 per cent of spring wheat, 61 per cent of canola, 36 per cent of flax and 30 per cent of soybeans have now been combined. Many crops are coming off tough or damp and are being placed in dryers.

Topsoil moisture conditions continue to improve with the recent rain and snow. Cropland topsoil moisture is rated as four per cent surplus, 66 per cent adequate, 24 per cent short and six per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as two per cent surplus, 60 per cent adequate, 29 per cent short and nine per cent very short.

At this time, most livestock producers are indicating they have adequate supplies of hay, straw, greenfeed and feed

grain heading into winter. However, producers in southern and central regions are reporting that some areas will have inadequate feed and that shortages are likely.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to the recent snow and rain lodging crops. There are many reports of geese and other wildlife feeding on swathed crops. Crop quality has been affected, and downgrading is expected at the elevator due to bleaching and sprouting.

Small Businesses Keep Local Economies Strong October 14-20 is Small Business Week in Canada While the storefronts on Main Street may not be as large as Amazon or any of the online retailers, they play an important role in the commu-

nity.

In Canada 98.2 per cent of all businesses have fewer than 100 employees. They drive the economy particularly in rural areas.

Their success is considered vital to the country’s prosperity.

In Saskatch-

ewan there are 129 small businesses per thousand people. This is the highest rate in the country and above the national average of 105. The agriculture sector contributes to this high small business rate.

In 2016 there were 39,047 businesses in the agriculture sector, of which 39,035 were small businesses.

Small businesses account for 31 per cent of Saskatchewan’s GDP. This exceeded or matched the corresponding national average nine times.

Small businesses keep local economies strong.

They employ a large portion of the workforce -- just add up those payroll numbers. Their workers spend their earnings on goods and services in the community.

Apples, fall and harvest good companions Apple pies, crisps, bread and . . . more.

That was the headline in the Farmers Almanac newsletter. October, the fall season, is apple season. Caramel Apple Crumb Pie. Apples and Pork. Caramel Covered Apples.

Apple Cider Bread or Muffins.

Apple Oatmeal Crisp.

Apple Cinnamon Waffles.

Butter. Double Apple Walnut Bread. Baked Apples filled with Sausage. All of these recipes make your mouth water.

We have been fortunate to be able to visit Tennessee; both times in the fall. One of our favourites is homemade apple butter which can be found just about everywhere. Not sure whether it is the soil the apple trees grow in or the water or the family recipes but I have never been able to make my apple butter taste the same.

Apples grow on apple trees and while I would like to make the claim that this tree is only found on the North American continent it would not be true. Apple trees grow throughout the world. There are many different species of course. Actually there are more than 7,500 cultivars grown throughout the world. The Asians and Europeans brought seeds to North America when they arrived on the ships.

Different cultivars are bred for tastes and uses.

Apples are very versatile as they can be eaten

raw or used in baking or cooking. Apples can be brewed to make cider (which is delicious). So many uses can be found for this fruit.

Of course the apple has roots that go way back.

Back to Greek mythology where it is often referred to as a forbidden fruit.

The Greek hero Heracles was required to travel to the Garden of the Hesperides and pick the golden Peggy Hasein apples of the Tree of Life.

This was a requirement of one of the Twelve Labours.

Eris, the Greek Goddess of Discord was upset when was excluded from the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. In retaliation she tossed a golden apple with the inscription “for the most beautiful one” into the wedding party.

Three women claimed the apple: Hera, Athena and Aphrodite. Paris of Troy was chosen to settle the dispute. After many bribes, Aphrodite tempted Paris with Helen of Sparta who was said to be the most beautiful woman in the world.

When Paris awarded the apple to Aphrodite it set off a chain of events that eventually led to the Trojan War. The apple became sacred to Aphrodite and now it is said when you throw an apple at someone you are symbolically declaring your love. To catch the thrown apple shows one’s acceptance.

Even in the Garden of Eden, the apple was the forbidden fruit. It was an apple that Eve used to coax Adam to share causing the two of them to be banned from the garden forever. The apple became a symbol for knowledge, immortality, temptation, man falling into sin and the sin itself.

Maybe that’s why students have taken an apple to the teacher. Or how the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” came into being.

Thirty years to go forward It seemed some sort o game Thirty men were to follow -- only one to a man down The officer tossed a burner “that burst with a greenish flame The signal for us to move forward And so the attack began.

Y.T. could fill in a few pages telling what happened in the next few minutes, but that is not what the Pensive Patio is about. Put here are the “good” memories of the people I used to know, and how come that I remember some, okay.

Ten years after the above few minutes I had occasion to call Perkins in Toronto, when Y.T. went to an Argyll Reunion in 1955. I called from the Union Station in Toronto.

“Hello, Lt. Perkins,” I said. “This is Bob Mason, and you asked me one time to give you a call if I ever came east again. Well here I am in the Union Station!”

“Hello Bob,” he almost hollered. “I’ll be right down there to pick you up. You have to stay at our place while you are here.”

“There must be two hundred people in here.

How will I know you Norman?” I asked. “The last time I saw you in the hospital at Waalwik your two legs were frozen up to your knees.”

“Oh that,” he replied.

“At one time they thought of amputation, but they didn’t think much of a fellow 6’5” being called Shorty so they tried the hot-cold therapy again. When you see a head sticking up through the crowd, that’s me.”

He was right. A while later I saw a head sticking up thru the crowd.

Perk sure had a sense of humour.

A few minutes later we are driving down the freeway headed for his home in Eastern Toronto.

We stop at his favourite coffee roost and reminisce (we band of brothers).

“Do you think it was all worth it?” sez Perk.

“Yeah,” I say. “For the fellows that didn’t get hit.”

That was all, that for

the first conversation that we had had in 10 years.

Later, after he had introduced his wife and

family and I had shown him mine, we sat around his living room.

“Hear this,” he suddenly said putting his arm around their dog as they sat around the chesterfield.

“Oh it’s awful hard to be humble When you are perfect in every way . . .”

As he sang the dog threw his head back

“A Wee . . . A Woo . . . ,” it said.

“How is that for a duet?” sez Perk proudly.

I couldn’t help but feel that he was out on Kapelshe Veer, and was one of us again.

Later as we strolled the boardwalk along Lake Ontario, this 6’5” school teacher said “hello” to the many students who said “hello” to us. Y.T. began to realize that for him and his students, the war had been over for years.

This younger man had faced death closer than most, but the feelings of “then” had vanished.

As Y.T. pulled the blankets over his head, that night he began to realize that the past was just that -- the past.

P.S. Of the 29 men who attacked K.V. Dyke that night, only three ever got to the top. One got killed. Perk was there. As for the other guy . . . well ...

He was there too.

Asquith council news Asquith Town Council held its regular council meeting on Wednesday, October 10 at 7 p.m.

Attending the meeting were Deputy Mayor Sue Sawicki, Councillors Dylan Claypool, Jeff Eide, Harold Edwards and Ted Goodnough.

Also attending were CAO Holly Cross, Administrative Assistant Kathy Picketts.

A resolution was made to accept the minutes from the September 12 regular council meeting and August 21 special council meeting.

The treasurer’s statement of receipts and expenditures for the month of September and the bank reconciliations for the month of September were accepted as presented.

A motion was made to accept the accounts paid in the amount of $27,917.77 and the accounts payable in the amount of $17,139.26 as presented.

Council resolved to continue with tax enforcement on two properties in town by applying to the Provincial Mediation

Board.

The Town of Asquith will be insuring volunteer firefighters and first responders of Asquith by providing the Employee and Family Assistant Program.

Exceed Asphalt will be doing two more loads hot mix patching around town this fall for the cost of $3,750.

Council would like to remind all residents that if you see something that is a crime or looks criminal, to call the RCMP at 306-975-1670. If you see individuals driving dangerously, speeding, or if you see something that just doesn’t look right, please call the RCMP. It does not do any good to come into the town office the next day to report it to office staff. It is extremely important that the RCMP have a handle of how much crime, no matter how petty, is occurring in town.

Gimme Shelter(belts) - Rolling Stones and trees back on the farm?

There is an old adage about history often repeating itself, and that might just be the case when it comes to farm shelterbelts.

As long as there have been farms, farmers have always had a sort of lovehate relationship with trees.

My grandfather homesteaded in Saskatchewan more than a century ago now, and I well-remember his stories about clearing the home quarter largely with an axe, horse and sweat. He talked about how, when the money ran out for homesteaders like himself, and he needed to

replenish funds to allow him to continue clearing their land, there was only one job option, to go swing an axe for a farmer with deeper pockets to afford help.

The process took years, to the point Calvin Daniels the last few acres were still treed at a time grandpa could afford to bring in a cat to help clear it.

Trees in the era of the homesteader were simply big weeds taking up valuable land they want to plant to crop.

Agriculture

The Dirty Thirties changed that viewpoint a lot.

The drought years of the 1930s meant topsoil was left to erode with the wind. The photographs of dust storms, and dirtfilled ditches left in their wake are memorable to anyone who has seen them.

A solution to such erosion, or at least a barrier of some protection, was to plant tree shelterbelts.

That was something my father’s generation often did. The rows of trees helped trap snow in winter to provide moisture, and slowed winds which protected against soil blowing away.

With the widespread adoption of zero-till farming techniques, erosion by wind and water became less of a concern a few decades ago.

And with the emergence of larger and larger

equipment shelterbelts were increasingly seen as a nuisance, and many farmers of my generation were once again chopping trees, albeit by mechanical means.

But a recent study is suggesting shelterbelts might actually help in terms of crop yields.

Producers are always looking for ways to punch up yields, from looking at new ways to apply additional fertilizer, to the addition of micronutrient packages not even thought of 25-years ago.

But could better yields be as simple as planting a row of trees across a field and leaving them to grow for the next few decades?

A recent article in The Western Producer looks at a project by Shathi Akhter, a research scientist at Agriculture Canada’s research centre in Indian Head, which is suggesting it might indeed be an option.

It is interesting how detailed research often shows data that runs counter to perception. Trees were largely thought to steal nutrients away from the crop, but that element may not be the whole story in terms of their influence on crop growth according to the initial research.

It leaves one wondering if the next generation of farmer might be replacing the shelterbelts that were removed only a decade or so again?

Biggar: Scotland and Canada have many things in common Biggarites are well aware of our namesake in Scotland. Some have even travelled there.

Biggar, Scotland is a town and former burgh in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. The population as of the 2014 census was estimated at 2,320. Very similar to the population of Biggar, Saskatchewan.

The Scottish town is located in the Southern Uplands,

near the river Clyde. The closest towns are Lanark and Peebles. It serves a wide trading area as does the Canadian town of Biggar.

There have been occasions when the Biggar Independent has been mistaken for the newspaper which serves Biggar, Scotland. We have been invited to cover Robbie Burns festivities, local council meetings and other events. Some readers are

very disappointed when we don’t show up at these events. (Sometimes we, tongue in cheek, reply that we would be happy to . . . all we require are plane tickets and accommodation).

A couple of months ago, an email reached the mailbox of The Independent. It was from Jen Ness, a teacher at Biggar High School. She was excited because her class went on

The pupils then drew on this experience to write a theatrical review as part of a writing competition. The competition was a collaboration between Biggar High School and WildChild Productions.

commented on the wonderful structure found in the entry by Niamh Hastie and the characterful personality-filled writing of Abby Colley. Special mention was also made of Abbie Carrick’s entry which was incredibly endearing.

WildChild Productions also provided the pupils with a film in which they answered the many questions posed by the pupils. The time invested by the small company has been invaluable to the whole experience with pupils feeling both informed and valued.

The pupils particularly enjoyed learning that there is another Biggar and that their teacher has no clue about the world in which she lives. It would be interesting to try to set up some kind of collaboration with you.

Michael Morpurgo’s Kensuke’s Kingdom Theatrical Review

Well go see them at Kensuke’s Kingdom.

I would absolutely recommend going to see ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’.

It will make you laugh, cry and maybe even give you a fright. ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ is the story of a boy named Michael who goes on adventures with his mum, dad and their dog, Stella, but one night it’s rough out on the sea and then disaster strikes when he and his dog are swept overboard and find themselves stranded on an island where they find an old man who was a Japanese soldier but now he has no more fam-

ily. So Kensuke stays on the island protecting the orangutans from the hunt-

ers. Will Michael return home safely?

In ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ the actors make a clever use of staging for example when they changed from scene to scene the actors only used one prop for multiple things.

In ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ most of the actors that played people where people but for Kensuke, the orangutans and Stella the Dog were played by a

puppet, so it felt like a real story.

The use of original music was fan-dabby-dozey because it was their own type of music that was made by Jake Dorfman and it was made just for the play ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’. In my opinion I think the music sounded like classical music.

The use of lighting helped to support the audience’s understanding. In the scene when Michael was capsizing from the Peggy Sue they used blue lighting to show that he was in water.

I recommend going to see WildChild’s staging of ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ because it is an amazing experience. The clever combination of staging, realistic puppetry, original music and lighting made it an unforgettable story.

Kensuke’s Kingdom Review

by Niamh Hastie Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Kensuke’s Kingdom’ is a truly great adaptation of an already beautiful story.

The play is a very successful book adaptation, adaptor Stuart Patterson has managed to convey many emotions and themes for both younger and older viewers to pick up on. The play manages to awaken the imagination of the audience throughout each setting created. It was a good choice by Adam Small (who is also the founder of the company WildChild who produced the play) to host this play at the Pleasance Theatre during the Edinburgh Fringe Festival; it allowed them to get many viewers of the play and hopefully some notoriety as well.

When Michael’s parents decide to follow their dream of seeing the world, his dad purchases a yacht which they name the Peggy Sue; even grandma’s (Jenny Agutter) warnings are not enough to deter them. Aaron Douglas

as Michael really manages to bring out the child-like imagination of his character as his parents and their trusty dog Stella sail across the world, travelling to places like Africa, Asia and Australia, but that is where the trouble begins. After a storm that wreaked havoc on the yacht, Michael and Stella wake up on a seemingly abandoned island. Food starts appearing for them, and they eventually find out that there are things on the island – orangutans – and another human…

The settings for each scene are pulled off well, and as the actors are changing scenes, most times you do not even notice until the scene has already been changed. The actors are just so full of energy that your focus is on them instead.

They also manage to make do with the rather few props, still managing to ensure that the audience knows where the charac-

ters are supposed to be. It is quite amazing because one minute a sheet could be a sail, the next the roof of a hut. The actors manage to properly bring the show to life with the props which is most impressive.

The main characters, Michael, Stella and Kensuke are all portrayed very well, with two of the main

role he plays. Despite also being an adult, it is still very easy to pick up that Michael is supposed to be a child through how he speaks, thinks and acts.

I think occasionally the actor tried a little too hard though, and it didn’t seem too natural, but as said before, this was only occasionally. Gabrielle Margu-

Even though Kensuke was only a puppet strapped to his upper body, the design of the puppet (by Adam Small) is pretty realistic, particularly the face, and James Jip manages to bring the puppet to life very well. He conveys Kensuke’s (and at the end Michiya’s) emotions very well which is a great thing to be able to do since puppets can’t generally express lots of emotion. Scott Wallace and Rebecca Stanier, who play as Dad and Kikambo and Mum and Tomodachi respectively, do a great job expressing feeling and emotion.

For example, at the part when Michael falls out of

the boat, it seems as if the characters are real and were all really scared. I will say that at times it felt as if they were only reading off of a script, but overall they performed really well.

When they pupeteered the orangutans in the story – Tomodachi and Kikambo – they managed to seem as if they weren’t there at times and that it was just orangutans doing things on their own. Overall, I think everyone played their respective character or characters really well.

Overall, I really enjoyed this play! I loved the energy each character brought to the stage (literally and metaphorically), and how well each puppet was puppeteered. I also want to mention the shadow puppetry used, which really set the scene for when Kensuke was retelling his backstory of when he fought in the war. Again, I really enjoyed it. I would probably suggest going to see it since I’d give it 4.5 out of 5 stars!

Joy was born in Biggar, Sask. on February 11, 1936 to Andrew and Edith Kilback. She grew up in Biggar where she attended school completing her Grade 12.

Joy married Charles Sherbino in 1953.

He worked as a CN Conductor. They had two children, Kirk (Joyce), and Laurie (Tom). John had seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles; her parents, Andrew and Edith Kilback; and her grandson, Nathan Schweder.

Joy worked as a care aide at Diamond Lodge for approximately ten years. She also worked at various retail stores in town over the years.

She loved to play cards, especially crib. She greatly enjoyed familhy gettogethers, where she often supplied the meal and delicious desserts! She cherished time with family and often said that family was the most important thing to her in the world.

Joy moved to Biggar Health Centre Long Term Care in June 2015. She passed away September 27, 2018 at the age of 82. She will be missed dearly by her family and all those close to her.

A tribute to Dad Written by Kelly Tomyn (daughter of Jack) Dad left this world while doing what he loved, driving the combine to bring in the harvest, something he had done, and had enjoyed doing, for the last 66 years. He left us quickly, just like the way he drove that new black Chevy in his younger days, or the way he would abruptly end his phone calls by saying “Ok, well, we’ll talk to you again” and then just hang up! He didn’t suffer... and as someone said when they learned of Dad’s passing, “I guess you couldn’t have asked for a better way to ‘move it on over’, now could you?”

When someone is in the same community for 78 years like Dad was, roots run deep. Long and loyal friendships are formed, you touch the lives of many, and in turn, many lives touch yours. It’s impossible to summarize an entire life into a few words.

Jack Lawrence Pich or “Jackie” as his older sisters affectionately called him throughout his entire life was born on April 6, 1940 in the Rosetown Hospital, Rosetown, Sask. He was the youngest of five children born to Louis Pich and Albina Vasichek. Dad was a very tiny baby.... records showed that he received emergency baptism at the hospital from Nurse Beatrice Pravada. But that was likely the first and only time in his life that anyone would describe Dad as being “tiny”!

Dad was born at a time when everyone had large families and the older children cared for their younger siblings. This was especially important for young Jack, because, as it would turned out, his Mom would pass away at the age of 36, and when he was only 2 ? years old. His sister Marjorie, who was 18 years older than him, and his sister Georgina, who was 17 years older than him, helped raise little brother “Jackie” in his early years.

Dad chose farming as his career at an early age. By the time he was a young teenager, he was living out at the farm rather than in Rosetown at the Pich house. Living on a farm, rather than in town, was always for him.

Even though Dad had to leave school to go farm before he wrote his grade 10 exams, he did math in his head like a snap.

One of his strong suits was calculating gas mileage in his head and then quizzing his son-in-law Darcy about what he got for mileage! For things he didn’t compute in his head, he used my old university pocket calculator... and only Dad could use that calculator.... because he had worn most of the labels off the buttons from using it so much!

Dad mentioned that this year would mark his 66th year on the combine to help with the harvest.... we can’t even start to calculate how many bushels he would have thrashed or how many rounds in the field he would have made. Combine technology had come a long ways since he first started riding them as a boy, and Dad loved all the bells and whistles that those big John Deere’s offered now.

Dad could be described as a “deep thinker”... he often seemed to be quietly figuring things out in his head, calculating something, tracking bills or making lists of things to do around the farm. He was always making notes in small “note-

padsâ&#x20AC;? that could be found throughout the house. And he always kept one of those notepads in the breast pocket of his work-shirt.

From my Grandfather, Louis, Dad inherited the traits of being a quiet, hardworking, no-nonsense man; that is how family history books described my Grandfather. If there was a fire in the neighborâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s field, Dad was there. If someone needed a hand getting harvest done, Dad would answer the call. If someone had a casing bowl or waterline for their cattle freeze up, they would call Jackâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Backhoe Service and Dad would be there with his hoe. You could rely on him to help out, to get things done and to sit for a coffee and a visit when the work was done. On occasion, I believe stronger drinks than coffee were consumed during these visits!

But we all knew another side to Dad; those traits he inherited from his mother, who passed away before he really ever knew her. Family history books describe Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother, Albina, as having a â&#x20AC;&#x153;jovial dispositionâ&#x20AC;? and as someone who â&#x20AC;&#x153;wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t afraid to laugh at herself or share a laugh with othersâ&#x20AC;?. All of us will miss Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s jolly smile and his belly laughs.

No-one laughed as long, or as loud, as Dad himself did when he retold stories about the crazy antics he and his friends did over the years. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s those stories and memories that we all hold dear, and what will help us all through this.

In 1964, Jack married Patricia Mescall, whose family had also homesteaded in the Marriott area. Some of the happiest times for my Dad and Mom were attending dances at the Czech Hall, which featured a local orchestra playing lively polka music and huge crowds. Oh yes, and everyone had a bottle or two outside in the trunk of their car for â&#x20AC;&#x153;socializingâ&#x20AC;?.

My Dad and Mom were married for 47 years until Momâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s passing in 2012.

In 1965, Dad and Mom welcomed me, their â&#x20AC;&#x153;pride and joyâ&#x20AC;? and only daughter, to the world. I could often be found at my Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s side.... on the skidoo, with him at the neighbours for a visit, out feeding the pigs, or riding around with him on farm machinery. Later during my school years, there were too many times to count that I would look over to the stands during my basketball or volleyball games and there would be Mom and Dad, cheering on our team.

In 1990, Dad and Mom gained a sonin-law when Kelly and Darcy were married.... Dad always took a real interest in knowing what both Darcy and I did for work and my Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s pride for his daughter and son-in-law was evident to anyone who knew him.

And music, music, music..... especially

Old Time Polka Music, was a big part of Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life. If he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t at a hall dancing to it, he was by a radio or a CD player listening to it. Just recently, while combining out in the field, Dad made an â&#x20AC;&#x153;urgent callâ&#x20AC;? over the two-way radio to Colin to come over and set the combine radio, so he wouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t miss listening to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Saturday Night Old-Time Dance Partyâ&#x20AC;? while he was harvesting!

Everyone in Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s life was delighted when he found happiness with Lois and they were married in 2014. Dad and Lois lived a lifetime of experiences in the relatively short time they were together.

They didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let the grass grow under their feet. Dad and Lois cherished their wedding dance at the Czech Hall and joined their friends from the Biggar Dance Club at dances in Biggar, Landis, Ruthilda, and even to Danceland in Watrous.

They shared a common passion for many things, and took pleasure in lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple things.... be it caring for their yard and bountiful vegetable garden, playing cards, dancing to Old time polka music or visiting casinos both near and far.

Simply spending time with family, friends and neighbours at planned events or â&#x20AC;&#x153;kitchen-tableâ&#x20AC;? get-togethers was something they both enjoyed. Dad and Lois supported each other, took care of each other, shared some laughs and shared some tears. As one of Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lifelong friends put it, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Where you saw one, you saw the otherâ&#x20AC;?.

Everyone will miss Dad in their own way. Words canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t describe what Lois, Darcy and I are feeling with the sudden and unexpected loss of the husband and father that we so dearly loved.

And letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not forget that there is a special cat named Tiger that is likely wondering why Dad isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sitting in his easy chair and brushing his fur like he used to...

But Dad would want us to carry on, so we all try to find comfort by thinking of the following... Even though we wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have another chance to â&#x20AC;&#x153;hit it bigâ&#x20AC;? at the slot machines with Dad in Vegas or at a local casino... we can still smile when we play a turn in his memory.

Even though Dad wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be there to tell us what make, model and year an antique car is by simply looking at its tail lights... we can still appreciate how beautiful those old cars look, like he did.

Even though friends and family wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t hear Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s voice on the other end of the phone asking us how much rain we got, or whether the grain tested dry... or ask why we thought those Blue Jays, those Roughriders or those Curlers just made such a stupid play... we can still strive to have a passion for, and be content with, lifeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple things, like he was.

Even though Dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s famous Sunday pancakes wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be on the breakfast table anymore... we can still laugh out loud when we add his â&#x20AC;&#x153;not so secretâ&#x20AC;? ingredient, Baileyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Irish Cream, to our batch!

AND, most important of all... Even though Dad can no longer physically put his arms around friends and family or give us a fun loving swat on the shoulder... he is there with us and will always be there with us.

Biggar New Horizons Happenings There was a full complement of board members at the meeting held on Thursday, October 11.

October convenor, Gail Herzberg, reported that only 14 members came out to the potluck on Thanksgiving Monday. As a result the board decided to move the October pot-

lucks to the third Monday of the month in the future.

The hall will be used for the upcoming flu clinics in October and November. Volunteers have come forward to help for three of the four slots but the space from noon to 3 p.m. on the 25th still needs to be filled. If you can

Guilty plea for â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Gas and Dashâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; thief A September 24 fuel theft from a local retailer in the Town of Biggar, has resulted in a guilty plea for a Moose Jaw woman.

Sara-Jean Knowlton appeared in provincial court in Saskatoon, October 4, pleading guilty to her charge of Theft Under $5,000.

The plea was the result of the September 24 theft in Biggar.

She received six months jail concurrent to other charges she pled out to from Saskatoon.

As a result of the guilty plea, the charge against her cohort, Nicholas De Wit, was Stayed.

The incident on September 24 had Biggar RCMP responding to the theft at 12:30 p.m. At 1:10 p.m., there was also a

minor theft from a business in Biggar. Investigation revealed the two incidents were related, and the two, Knowlton and De Wit, were arrested in Saskatoon, also facing a number of charges in that jurisdiction including offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. Both were charged at the time by Biggar RCMP with Theft Under $5,000, and both made their first appearance in provincial court in Saskatoon on September 25.
