Eric Reinhart, 2019 Canadian Parkour Champion, was a special guest of the Biggar Gymnastics Club, October 4 and 5, showing kids of Biggar Central and St. Gabriel schools the gravity-defying world of parkour - an activity of rapid movement through an area, usually an urban setting, jumping, climbing and running. Reinhart was able to get kids to find their inner Spider-man as kids charged around the Woodrow Lloyd Gym at BCS, getting a good workout, and learning from a Canadian Champion that gravity is only a state of mind!

Museum receives grant The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held September 17, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Alan Boyle, Kevin McNicholls, Kirk Sherbino, Edward Young, and Ivan Young.

Council resolved that the minutes of the September 3, 2019 Regular Meeting of Council be accepted as presented.

Council resolved that Bylaw No. 19-822, being a bylaw respecting the Biggar Public Utility Service Bylaw be read three times and adopted.

Council resolved that the minutes of the September 4, 2019 General Government Committee Meeting, be accepted as presented. As well, the minutes of the September 9 General Government Committee, September 10 Committee Meeting of the Whole, September 11 Planning and Development Committee meetings, were accepted as presented.

Council resolved that the RCMP report to September 12, the August 26 and 30 Biggar Rural District Fire Association minutes, the Community Development Officer’s report to September 17, and the Town Foreman’s report to September 17, all be accepted as presented.

Former area MP Bill McKnight dead at 79 Bill McKnight, former Member of Parliament for Kindersley-Lloydminster, passed away at the age of 79, October 4.

McKnight served as the area MP for the riding which encompassed parts of Battleford, Kindersley, Moose Jaw, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Maple Creek and, of course, Biggar, having been elected in 1979.

He won further federal elections in 1980, 1984 and 1988 until 1993.

In his time in office, he served as Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development,

Minister of National Defence during the first Gulf War, Minister of Energy, Mines and Resources and Minister of Labour in the Progressive Conservative government of Brian Mulroney.

He was Saskatchewan’s third treaty commissioner, and while in the role (20072012), McKnight added a Kindergarten to Grade 12

treaty resource guide to provincial school curriculum.

He played a major part in the creation of the 1992 Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement Framework Agreement, which identified 2.5 million acres of land to enhance econom-

ic opportunities for First Nations in the province.

McKnight was appointed to the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, and was also honorary chief of the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation. A 36-acre parcel of commercial land in Saskatoon was named after McKnight by the Muskeg Lake Cree Nation in recognition of his role in creating federal policy for Land Claims Settlements. It is known as the McKnight Commercial Centre.

McKnight died Friday, October 4 after a sudden illness.

To the Editor: I want to acquaint you with a post that was on Facebook a few weeks ago. It was written by Biggar Bites Catering on September 16.

Quote: “Our truck is staying parked tomorrow. A little bird told us there is a burger sale going on tomorrow at the Co-op. Please come out and support them. Nothing better than a burger on the tractor.”

NOW . . . what can the

detractors make of that?

Could we expect an apology? Could we expect an acknowledgment of her generous gesture?

Here’s hoping that some lessons have been learned. We all live together in this world.

Words like “welcome”, “good job”, “good luck” go a long way towards making a cohesive community.

October is all about delicious food October. The 10th month in the Julian and Gregorian calendars and one of seven months to have 31 days. October comes from Latin word “octo” which means eight. October is synonymous with the season of autumn in this part of the world.

It is also the month of a number of food related days. It is National Pumpkin Month, National Apple Month, National Caramel Month, National Cookie Month, National Dessert Month, National Pickled Peppers Month, National Pretzel Month, National Seafood Month, and National Pizza Month.

Added to that there are a number of days

in October dedicated to food: National Pumpkin Spice Day is October 1; October 6 is National Noodle Day; October 10 is National Angel Food Cake Day; October 12 is National Pumpkin Pie Day; October 13 is National M and M Day; October 16 is National Liqueur Day; October 18 is National Chocolate Cupcake Day; October 21 is National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day; October 30 is National Candy Corn Day and, appropriately National Caramel Apple Day is October 31.

These are just a few -- it seems every day has two or three special days to be celebrated.

Originally candy corn was made by pouring each colour into molds. Obviously this process was very time consuming. Today, the Jelly Belly Factory machine produces 1,200 kernels per second. Over 35 million pounds are consumed across the world every year. That means about nine billion pieces of the candy which is made of corn syrup, honey and sugar. It’s fat free but has 38 grams of sugar for 19 pieces.

The first cupcake recipe is credited to Amelia Simms who wrote the recipe in American Cookery in 1796. She called it “a cake to be baked in small cups”. Reg Cleator The first time that I remember Reg Cleator was when we were moved to Waalwijk from St. Michael’s Gestel down near Hertogenbosch in Holland.

We were standing there watching the “Toronto Scots” move into the town. Apparently there was a big “to do” there but I never met any of them. Cleator kept saying that he knew some of them as he had been a “Toronto Scottish” member before being transferred to the Argylls.

Cleator was easy to speak to and I thought a nice guy. Y.T. had quite a few encounters with him after that, and below are some of them.

When we were in Kalepshe Veer, men and weapons at hand, our attack, which was supposed to take only a few hours, ended up taking seven days.

We attacked K.V at night at great human cost. We lost of lot of men.

Only three of the 20 some men made it to the top of the dike and one of them was killed up there.

The next morning a couple of newspapermen were up there with 16 inch field glasses. Cleator borrowed them for a moment.

“There’s still a Canadian soldier out there, and he isn’t moving, but maybe he’s just wounded.”

There was a Canadian stretcher bearer with us and Lt. Cleator said to him, “Go and bring the fellow in.”

The stretcher bearer didn’t move . . . “If I go out there I’ll get killed,” he said. The man wouldn’t go.

“Give me your satchel and hat with the Red

Cross on them then.”

Cleator held the bag up so the enemy would see it. Put on the Red Cross helmet and waved the Red Cross satchel.

He bravely walked out and brought the fellow in, and no one shot at him.

From that moment on I sure respected Cleator. Not only did he walk out in front of the enemy, there was always the threat of being killed. The enemy never fired a shot at him at all, even though some of them must have been desperate. Y.T. could tell a lot more about the German soldiers defending K.V., but I won’t.

The main reason that I write this bit about Lieutenant Reg Cleator is not that he was such a great man but because he was different. Y.T.’s time in the army wasn’t that long, but old friends that became officers, usually changed quite a bit. And although I only knew Cleator for some months before we were violently parted, he always called me Bob. A name Y.T. had held all his life, and one that made him feel comfortable. Cleator always treated me like a friend.

Our regiment moved to the Rhineland. We rested for the night at Cleve then the following day we moved into our part of the Rhineland campaign. An enemy shell landed smack into

a group of our officers and did a lot of damage.

Y.T. ws kneeling beside Captain Norman Donaldson (who later died) when a familiar voice behind me said, matter of factly, “Get off my foot.”

I looked behind me. Sure enough there was a foot right Bob Mason beside a man’s head. It was Reg Cleator.

There were so many of our officers hit that we had to go into the Hochwald Forest and attach to “A” company.

I never saw Cleator again until the Argyll Reunion in Hamilton, 1956 and boy what a reunion we had.

Another time was when after being at our second reunion, Phyllis and I were returning home. We had part of an hour stop in Winnipeg. We were strolling around when a voice behind us suddenly said, “Boy, there’s a good headdress.”

Quickly we turned, wow! -- there was Cleator. He was on his way to a Legion meeting in Edmonton. Reg was quite a force in the Ontario Legion.

Sadly we saw his obituary notice in the Legion magazine some years later.

“It was the best of times, It was the worst of times.”

(NC) When we think about people who might be most affected by flu season, most of us picture vulnerable groups such as children or seniors.

But these aren’t the only people at risk of the potentially devastating consequences of flu.

If you or a loved one are 50 years of age or older, the risk of contracting the flu is higher than you might think.

As we age, our immune systems weaken naturally, increasing the risk of contracting infections like influenza. The weakening of the immune system can result in higher incidence and severity of infectious diseases

like influenza, as well as lower strength and persistence of antibody responses to vaccines.

Adults 50 years and older have medical conditions that are more frequently linked to flu complications, compared to younger adults. Conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease increase the risk of hospitalization and heart attacks when combined with the flu. Every year the flu contributes to an average of 12,200 hospitalizations and 3,500 deaths.

Prioritize your health and stay healthy this season with these tips: 1.) Get vaccinated. The flu shot is the first and

most important step to protecting yourself against the flu.

2.) Maintain a healthy diet. Eat a nutritious diet with loads of fruits and vegetables and stay hydrated with fluids.

Keep active, as this will help boost your immunity, which is key in staying healthy throughout the flu season.

3.) Practice good health habits. Wash and sanitize your hands regularly, wipe down surfaces in your home and workspace, and stay away from those who are sick with the flu.

Nostalgic Horsepower There is something special about attending an event where people associated with draft horses gather.

In my own case I suppose there is something of a personal connection to the horses that contributes to the feeling I get when at such events.

Growing up on a farm we did not have horses, whether other than an obstinate-minded Shetland pony named Trixie that was never content to let a very young me ride, and as I grew a bit older my feet dragged on the ground, leaving Trixie as simply a hay burner on the farm.

But my father always spoke glowingly of draft horses, in particular Clydesdale horses – he loved their ‘feathered’ fetlocks in spite of the effort to keep them mud free when working in the field. He often related how he chose to quit school after Grade 8, in favour of staying home to work the fields with horses. I always had a feeling he half resented the fact he lived a few

decades too late, the tractor taking over from his beloved horses.

When I attend events such as the draft horse pulls at the Grain Millers Harvest Showdown in Yorkton each November, the PALS horse field day at Rama, or the chore team competition held at Tail Winds stable, I recognize the look my father had when talking about draft horses in the eyes of those involved in the events.

There is something about the big horses, the calmness they exhibit, their desire to do what is asked of them, the power they can generate when called upon that endears the big horses to those who work with them. It is something you can feel when you move among

them at such events.

The use of horses today of course is largely a hobby. The use of a team to work a field a rarity indeed and one that really holds onto a long lost past, but one can appreciate the desire to hold onto the history of farming, in particular the skills Calvin Daniels of farming with horses.

For those using horses to do chores there is clearly something far more personal in the undertaking than there is in starting an inanimate tractor to do the work.

There is a partnership of effort with the team, the daily work building on the bond of teamsters and their horses.

In our cellphone connected world of instant

everything, and little time for the joys of life, harnessing a team for work around the yard connects to a simpler time when there was a

joy in working with creatures happy to do their part in concert with the driver.

It is something of our

past, but I understand why some hang on to that past so tightly when I walk among the big horses.

Snow hampering 2019 harvest According to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report 47 per cent of the crop is now combined, up from 39 per cent last week, according to the crop report for September 24 to 30.

An early-winter storm slowed down most harvest operations in the province; however, producers were able to make some progress before the storm hit. The five-year (2014-18) average is 75 per cent combined for this time of year.

Thirty-four per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Much of the crop harvested so far is tough and is being put into grain dryers and aeration bins.

Farmers will need several weeks of warm and dry weather to get the crop off.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwest region, where 68 per cent of the crop is now combined. The

northeast region has 50 per cent combined and the southeast region 46 per cent. The westcentral region has 46 per cent combined, the northwest region 34 per cent and the east-central region 33 per cent.

Ninety-four per cent of field peas, 91 per cent of lentils, 68 per cent of barley, 58 per cent of mustard, 57 per cent of durum, 46 per cent of canary seed, 44 per cent of spring wheat, 37 per cent of chickpeas and 24 per cent of canola is now in the bin. An additional 62 per cent of canola and 17 per cent of mustard is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Most areas of the province received significant precipitation last week.

The Admiral area reported 103 millimetres, while the Moose Jaw area received up to 60 millimetres. Although the moisture further delays

harvest, it helps topsoil moisture conditions.

Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 31 per cent surplus, 65 per cent adequate and four per cent short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 20 per cent surplus, 72 per cent adequate, seven per cent short and one per cent very short.

The majority of crop damage this past week was due to hail, strong winds, lodging, localized flooding and frost. There continues to be many reports of crops sprouting, bleaching and staining and downgrading is expected. Geese and wildlife are also feeding on swathed crops and causing damage.

Farmers are busy drying grain and waiting for the weather to improve so they can continue with harvest operations.

The Asquith Fencing Club athletes and head coach Doug Brecht are back on the road for its 30th season.

Douglas Brecht founded the club in 1990, when his kids found his old equipment in the basement. And the rest is history.

His son Kirk was multiple provincial Saber champion, Western Canadian Silver Medalist and Canada Winter Games Team Saber Silver Medalist and Canada Elite Tournament Junior Bronze Medalist.

Dougâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s daughter, Nadia, was multiple provincial champion, Cadet National Silver Medalist and Canadian Nation Team Member to 2002 Junior World Championships.

Kirk, now the best saber coach in the province married Erica Emery, epeeist and they coach at the club in Regina. Nadia, first foil, then saber fencer, married epeeist Jordan Smith.

In 2018 the club moved to a larger facility, Rosseel Hall (old Asquith United Church).

The Musketeers, 4-8 years old and the Vikings, 9-13 years old are back on piste with coach Nadia Smith and assistant coaches Kirsten Van Marion and Ryan Rousell.

Brynn Whelan, competing for a spot on the Canadian Junior Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Saber Team, participated in two national training camps, placed ninth out of 22 at the Canada Cup and is leaving for a satellite competition in Iceland.

Ryan Rousell just returned from the Wheelchair Fencing World Championships in South Korea. Ryan, Canadaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first gold medal winner of a Wheelchair Fencing World Cup, is accumulating points to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. Ryan fences foil, saber and epee.

The club offers fencing

for ages 4-84, able bodied and wheelchair. Drop in for your free trial, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 6:30 and 9:30.

For many people across the globe, the hot days of summer will soon be giving way to the more crisp days of fall.

For those who live in regions where summer only subtly gives way to fall or is seemingly gone before the end of August, the 2019 autumnal equinox occurs on September 23. That marks the official beginning of fall, also known as autumn. In fact, that the season the follows summer seemingly goes by two differ-

But the season is referred to as â&#x20AC;&#x153;autumnâ&#x20AC;? in other parts of the world, including Great Britain. Fall was once even known as â&#x20AC;&#x153;harvestâ&#x20AC;? because of the harvest moon, which appears close to the autumnal equinox. â&#x20AC;˘ The colors of fall foliage are actually present year-round. Fall is

known for its colorful foliage. But the pigments responsible for those colors are actually present year-round. According to the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, green, yellow and orange pigments are present year-round.

However, during spring and summer, the leaves serve as factories where many foods necessary to help the tree grow are manufactured. That process takes place in the leaf in cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaves their green color. This process ceases as hours of daylight decrease and temperatures drop. As a result, chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears and the vivid colors of fall foliage begin to appear. â&#x20AC;˘ Squirrels have a (sophisticated) plan out there. Squirrels hiding food in autumn for the upcoming winter is a familiar sight. And squirrels are more organized

than many people may know. Groundbreaking research released in 1991 found that, even when squirrels bury that stash of nuts closely to one another, they will each return to the precise location of their personal cache. Recent research also has shown that squirrels bury their stash based on certain traits, such as the type of nut being buried. â&#x20AC;˘ Babies born in fall are more likely to see the century mark. Researchers at the University of Chicago studied more than 1,500 centenarians born in the United States between 1880 and 1895.

They then compared birth and death information with those centenariansâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; siblings and spouses so they could compare their early environment and genetic background and their adult environment. Their research found that most centenarians were born between September and November.

Festive Halloween treats can be easily concocted with a little imagination. Crafting a homemade chocolate and candy bark is one way to incorporate many of the candies and other treats synonymous with Halloween in a single delicious bite.

Chocolate bark is a sheet of chocolate that is usually covered with nuts, dried fruits, can-

dies, or additional pieces of chocolate. Bark, which is an easily prepared homemade dessert, can be broken apart into pieces.

Making bark begins with a favorite melting chocolate. Individuals can use candy-making chocolate that may need to be tempered and poured, or they can melt down chocolate bars and chips. This is best done in a double boiler set over simmering water.

Some people have success melting chocolate in a microwave on low until

the right consistency is reached.

The chocolate should be spread out on a pan lined with parchment paper or another nonstick surface, such as oiled aluminum foil.

While the chocolate is still tacky, add the desired bark ingredients.

Come Halloween, cooks can use candy corn, pretzels, raisins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and even dried cranberries to give the treat a seasonal feel. Of course, the bark can be customized to any flavor profile.

Another fun idea is to have gummy worms or other candies sticking out of the bark for a truly 3-D effect.

Some people may choose to use white chocolate or melting candies in different colors (orange and yellow) to add even more appeal to Halloween-theme bark.

Let the bark cool and harden. It can then be lifted off of the pan and broken into pieces.

Dad died suddenly on September 30th in Biggar, his hometown for most of his life. He was born in Kelowna, moved to Melville as a child, went on to play junior hockey in Drumheller, and ended up riding the rails for 42 years out of Biggar until he retired in 1992. He was a man with many interests including union activism, photography, skiing, woodworking and keeping up with the digital world. None compare to his love of the game of golf. He was an avid golfer from his younger years on, playing many, many courses and became a certified rules official with the SK Golf Association. He lived to golf and golfed to live. Dad is survived by his daughters, Debra (Grant) Gudmundson and Jill (Vernon) Suchan; grandchildren, Joel, Arin, Jeff(Amber), Paige and Dane (Alyssa); numerous friends and family members.

Dad was predeceased by his wife Laura in 2017.

As per dadâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wishes there will be no funeral service, and in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Many thanks to Drâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s A. Muller and T. Bree for the superb care provided to dad over the past several years.
