The tasty first fall supper was held Sunday at the Biggar Community Hall, hosted by the St. Gabriel’s Parish. Volunteers cooked and served a hall full of eager (and hungry!) area residents. The supper was also a great time to visit and catch up with friends.

Charges laid in Biggar fuel theft

On September 24 at approximately 12:30 p.m. Biggar RCMP received a complaint of a fuel theft from the Town of Biggar.

At approximately 1:10 p.m. there was also a minor theft from business in the Town of Biggar. Investigation revealed the two incidents were related.

Two suspects were arrested in the City of Saskatoon that day and face a number of charges in that jurisdiction, including offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. As a result of the arrests, Biggar RCMP have charged: • 30 year old male Nicholas De Wit of Prince George, British Columbia with: Theft Under $5, 000, contrary to Section 334(b) Criminal Code • 28 year old female Sara-Jean Knowlton of Moose Jaw with: Theft Under $5, 000, contrary to Section 334(b) Criminal Code Both individuals made their first court appearance on September 25 at

provincial court in Saskatoon.

These arrests were only possible through the quick thinking of a local resident who posted details of the theft of fuel on social media.

The suspect vehicle was spotted in Saskatoon and subsequently Saskatoon City Police became involved.

“This is an example of how effective social media can be in sharing unfolding information of a general nature,” said Biggar RCMP Detachment Commander, Sgt. Colin Sawrenko. “The discovery of the vehicle would not have been possible had it not been posted to social media.”

Fatal auto accident in Unity Unity RCMP responded to the scene of a fatal MVA on Highway 14 and a service road in the Town of Unity.

Local EMS and Unity Fire response were requested.

Initial investigation suggests that the 89 year-old driver and lone occupant of a Dodge Caravan crossed over Highway 14 into the path of an eastbound Ford Flex.

The driver of the Dodge Caravan was transported by ambulance to Unity Health Center where he was later confirmed

to be deceased. The deceased 89 year-old male driver is of the Unity district and his name, as of September 28, is not being released until family have all been notified.

The 63 year-old male driver of the Ford Flex, a Saskatoon resident, was treated and released from the local Health Center.

Traffic was re-routed around the accident scene for a few hours while the RCMP Traffic Reconstructionists attended to the scene and investigated the

closed all rail traffic, and officials reported no dangerous goods were involved.

Saskatchewan’s population continues upward trend Saskatchewan’s population continues to grow, reaching 1,162,062 people as of July 1, 2018 according to new figures released today by Statistics Canada.

That’s an increase of 3,226 people in the past quarter and 11,280 people in the past year.

The new population figure is slightly lower than previous estimates from Statistics Canada due to the post-census revision that is done every five years. The revised population estimates still show that Saskatchewan’s population has grown in every quarter for the past 49 consecutive quarters, the longest period of sustained growth since quarterly records were first kept beginning in 1971.

“Saskatchewan’s population has grown for more than 49 consecutive quarters, showing that our province is the place to be to live, work and to raise a family,” Immigration and Career Minister Jeremy Harrison said.

“Newcomers to Saskatchewan are adding to the strength of our province and contributing to our growing economy.”

During the second quarter of 2018 (April 1 to July 1), Saskatchewan’s population increase was made up of a natural increase (births minus deaths) of 1,659 and net international migration of 4,385, offset by net interprovincial migration of -2,818. crash.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation. At this time it is believed that alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

Traffic flow resumed after emergency personnel cleared the scene.

Newspapers are Trustworthy It was a typical summer night sitting around the campfire at the lake. Friends and family, lots of laughter, toasting marshmallows, partaking in few beverages.

“Why is it that I can find out on Facebook about who is changing the colour of their hair, what they are serving for supper or if the laundry has been done that day? But . . . I cannot find out about why the RCMP gathered north of town looking for a missing body.�

This, folks is the plain and simple truth about why journalism matters.

Because the facts and the truth are ferreted out by credible journalists whose writings fill the pages of newspapers.

No one reads newspapers anymore, you say. Wrong! Nine in 10 Canadians read content that was originally generated from a newspaper each week. Canadians turn to newspapers information on a

number of issues. It could be the details of a government program, or updates on NAFTA talks, or what the stock market is doing. In the case of a community newspaper readers seek out information on town council happenings, or school events, or delight in seeing a picture of their children on the front page.

There is a cost to journalism. These news gatherers like to be paid, as does everyone who works for a living. The owners of the news outlets, whether a national corporate or the independent owner, have bills to pay. One of the largest forms of revenue is advertising sales.

Journalists not only gather the news, they confirm the sources and double check the facts. In a world where information is instantaneous, it is surprising that 63 per cent of Canadians are unable to distinguish between legitimate news websites and fake news stories. Another important reason why journalism matters . . . now more than ever.

Unfortunately, the mistaken belief that everyone can be reached through social media has caused advertisers to abandon newspapers. Findings in many studies

that state ads in newspapers are the most trusted of all. Newspapers do not share their data either.

Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said, “Newspapers cannot be defined by the second word -- paper. They’ve got to be defined by the first word – news.�

News is important -- at the national level and at the local level. Journalism matters because democracy matters.

It is what defines us as people who are fortunate to live in a free country.

One writer is making a goal to read 50 books in a year. Rather than make up excuses about not having enough time she now puts away her phone and concentrates on reading a book which she can do in bed, while commuting to work, during meals or just waiting in line.

Saskatchewan Book Publishing Week was celebrated the last week of September. The local library participated in this event and sponsored an evening with two celebrated authors. What a great opportunity for people to get a glimpse into the many benefits of books.

Christopher Morley said, “Lord! When you sell a man a book you don’t sell just twelve ounces of paper and ink and glue -- you sell him a whole new life.�

Well, Christopher scientists and a whole bunch of research studies agree with you. According to studies done by the University of Toronto and Yale book readers come out ahead. Those who read are said to be more open minded. The readers actually learn the subject matter.

Mebbe Y.T. shouldn’t be writing about this stuff at all. A lot of these debatable claims are a part of his private life and because of

some legal law or other, shouldn’t be mentioned.

Of course the above fine, dramatic lines were written by a fellow who did have a somewhat seedy past. Whereas, everybody knows that Y.T. has always had a puritanical way about things.

Some of these pieces are a little interesting, though, to my own failing memory.

And besides jogging it for a few minutes, if The Independent sees fit to publish some, it all seems a kind of compliment!

All of us would like to be remembered as having contributed something “great” to society. But as the cow said when she noticed the pasture gate open, “This lets me out!”

In desperation almost, and in an effort to find something great, Y.T. looked under “S” in the old L and T -- Life and Times. Sorry, in the the hundred or so incidents entered there he found none that could be classed as even remarkable, let alone great... And here

they are: Sucker: Y.T. has looked in his mirror many times.

And still doesn’t think that he looks like a sucker, though some people do as is proven below: • A fellow at the Saskatoon fair one tome tried to see me one of the many wristwatches he had on his arm!

• After another fellow sold me a cheap pen, he said he’d get change for my five dollar bill in the nearest store.

• A couple of guys got me to hold their money while they played a louse game of pool. And when they asked me to play also, wandered why I had to go!

Who would have thought that such an innocent face could be taken for that of a sucker?

Saluting in Brandon: When we were in Camp Shilo, Manitoba in 1945, a fresh young officer, right out of officers school, instructed that (as Privates), we should salute him every time we met.

On leave in Brandon one night, about 20 of is kept circling around on the street and saluted him over and over quite a few hundred times.

Possibly he wanted to write a complaint to the C.O. (Commanding Officer), but I guess his arm was too sore! We never saw him again. Mebbe the army sent him to Ottawa - there were only a few Privates there!

Sapphire: Years ago, Doug Richards from Plenty phoned George Tosh and told him that Opuntia Lake was turning kind of pink.

George told him that when it turned red to let him know, and sure enough the whole lake (part of Eagle Creek) turned red.

George took quite a few photos of it, mounted one and gave to us.

A lot of people don’t believe it when Y.T. shows them, but actually the seed from Red Sapphire had spread Bob Mason over the flats when they were dry and then grown.

I’m not sure how often this happens, but we sure have a good picture of the time that it did!

Safety supper: For years, Cominco (now Agrium) managed the potash mine north of Delisle when Y.T. worked there in the 1970s.

Of course they had an intense safety program with safety meetings every week, and once every year they hosted a safety supper!

At the suppers they presented awards to accident free people and quite a few couples attended.

Phyllis and Y.T. were sitting at a table during one such supper in the Bessborough when Y.T. exclaimed: “By Gosh, there’s Moe MacDonald!”

“Moe, schmo,” sez my wife. “How am I supposed to know Moe MacDonald? Of the whole crowd of people here the only one that catches my eye is that fellow over there who has black hair and white sideburns!”

“That’s Moe,” sez Y.T. and waves - Hello Moe wherever you are!

of mine hollered from the gloom, “Hello Mason, you old buggar. How the heck are yah?” -- Hello Fritz!

Safety glass: It seems a long time ago that Dad came home from town laughing til tears run down his face! It seems the local hardware man sold him an “unbreakable” lamp glass that immediately shattered into a thousand pieces!

Sergeant for a day: In Kingston, Ontario, Y.T. was made into a Sergeant in the army and put in charge of a group. On the first day he was moving the group from class to class when he asked one of the boys, “Hey Bill, what time is it?”

Right away a Staff Sergeant stopped us and proceeded to give m the dickens right in front of everyone. It seems that when you are a Sergeant you don’t call a fellow soldier “Bill”.

Y.T. was so disgusted with this procedure that he went overseas right away as a Private - Hello Bill Urquahart!

Sportsman Cigarettes: I was keeping a carton of “Sportsman Cigarettes” for a guy (I don’t smoke) when they disappeared from my suitcase. There was a half finished package of #7’s lying where it should have been though.

One fellow from the crew claimed that half package was his and that they kept falling out of his shirt pocket.

When I told him where I’d found them, he quit!

Title explanation: Alvin Krepps from Brock, a former Legion executive, once said to a guy I knew “You were a good help, Verne... at least when you wrote me you never spelled my name with an ‘A’!”

The reader of this missive may notice that although Y.T. chooses to entitle this piece “S”, he never put a “B” in front of it!

Continued crop development a must for ag future

by Calvin Daniels If you are a regular reader of this space, and thanks to those who are, then you know I am a believer in maintaining older genetics, whether they are within a heritage breed of livestock, or in the plants from which our current crops evolved.

The reasoning is simple enough, the world we live in changes, and that means what we grow today may not be wellsuited for the world our children live in, or our grandchildren.

For our scientists to be able to adapt crops and livestock for differing conditions we may need to be able to go back to the foundational building blocks and essentially start over in developing something that will fill those future needs.

So I was more than a little interested when a release came via email from the Crop Science Society of America (CSSA) dealing with the very topic.

The article related, “plant genetic resources are any plant materials, such as seeds, fruits, cuttings, pollen, and other organs and tissues from

which plants can be grown. The stewards are the breeders, researchers, farmers, gene bank staff, and many others who keep them safe and utilize them.�

It went on to note Peter Bretting, a National Program Leader for the USDA’s Agricultural Research Service, saying these plant genetic materials and those who care for them are important for human survival. “These are the materials for crop breeding which play a role in food security and plant research,� he said in the article. “Crops make up the thin green line standing between humanity and calamity. To feed the growing world population, breeders must develop new crop types that yield more on less land with less material such as water and fertilizer.�

Interestingly, the article

also noted, “an important part of these plant genetic resources is crop wild relatives.

These are closely related to crop species but have not been domesticated by humans.

They are often related to crops eaten Calvin Daniels today in some way and provide useful material for breeding, study, and preservation, says Bretting. “For example, breeders might find they want a trait like drought tolerance in a specific crop.

It may be a rare quality only found in an ancestor. Luckily, breeders might be able to find what they need thanks to the stewards who are conserving the wild ancestors.�

This is fascinating in the sense it ties in with the concept that every species of plant and ani-

mal is worth preserving because science may find in the future it contains some trait or gene which may have a dramatically positive effect for humanity.

That vision dovetails with the recent recognition by CSSA in celebrating Crop Wild Relative Week Sept. 22-29. The week was created by the scientific society to raise awareness of the valuable wild relatives of familiar crops. “The fruits, grains, and roots of crop wild relatives are not as large as domesticated crops.

Some might be bitter or have poor texture. But these hardy plants have a natural and useful diversity of traits that helped them live in some harsh conditions. These traits are useful to breeders in the fight to create a sustainable and secure food supply,� noted an article on the week.

So to be prepared for what might come tomorrow we need to maintain the materials to develop the crops we will need.

Who knows a weed today may tomorrow be a valued part of agriculture.

As my late father often said, ‘The role of a community newspaper is to reflect the community it serves, warts and all.’ This is perhaps more relevant today than it was when he started The Eastern Graphic in Montague, PEI, in 1963.

Our readers trust our news. Our advertisers know their ads reach engaged local consumers both in print and online.

During National Newspaper Week, we celebrate the collective strength of our industry and the vital role it continues to play in championing local democracy. We are the watchdog. The prodder. The champion of ideas. We celebrate success and uplift those in need. We build community. Often we are the only source of local news.

We matter.

And yet our industry is under attack. Nine in 10 Canadians read newspaper content every week, but only five in 10 are willing to pay for it. Business and government at all levels use foreign-based social media for messaging despite surveys that show newspaper ads, both digital and print, are most trusted and boast massive reach.

Facebook and Google have a history of supporting hate, homophobia, xenophobia, falling prey to Russian trolls and playing fast and loose with the privacy of millions of users. They gobble an ever-increasing share of the media spending pie (the two account for 70 per cent of online spending) but invest virtually nothing to build Canadian communities. They do not collect HST that funds health care, education and other government services in your community.

So what media truly has your best interest at heart?

Is researched, reasoned journalism the next endangered species?

The internet isn’t interested in getting it right, or correcting errors, or in telling a story that recognizes the importance in the mundane of community living. The internet is a thing. Social media thrives on sensationalism, pulling us into the bottomless pit of scrolling through information.

As well, social media provides an opportunity to magnify each individual voice, or fake bot, to the point of deafening noise. Perhaps it is time for journalists to pack it in. Let governments operate without liability; for police and judicial proceedings to carry on with no representation to the public; for television, radio, and bloggers to bear the weight of investigative reporting. Let art, sports, travel, and literary works remain undiscovered, save for the lucky few who stumbled upon them. Opinions will no longer have an equal voice. This image of a defeatist fearsome future is what keeps journalists and news organizations striving for a balanced business model.

Be reminded that newsprint won’t report how long it took you to finish the crossword, or that you turn to the Automotive section before World or Opinion. It won’t listen in on your conversations, matching keywords to further commodify you, nor will it snoop through your cookies, bookshelves, and closets to collect more data about you to report back to the data masters. All that privacy remains yours with print.

It is up to humanity to take back our requirement for truth from those who would delight in our inability to recognize fact from fiction. (A recent Ipsos-Reid poll, 63% of Canadians were unable to distinguish between real news sites and fake news stories.)

To recognize journalism as a keystone species to our democracy and representing our communities.

We, as an industry, have been slow to ask for your support. We are now asking readers who value newspapers to contribute to rebuilding disintegrating newsrooms through news stand sales, subscriptions, and voluntary subscriptions (donations).

This has been met with resistance; readers have had the privilege of receiving free news for so long it has become an assumed right.

Another way for readers to support newspapers is by supporting our advertisers and actively tell them the ad in the newspaper worked - which directly affirms the business’ choice to spend valuable marketing dollars to communicate with the readers in the newspaper. A win for the reader, a win for the business and a win for newspapers - and a win for the government; competing online ad platforms based outside of Canada (Google, and Facebook in particular) do not pay taxes. This year, during National Newspaper Week we are asking you to pledge your support in a simple way at www.newspapersmatter.ca.

Like anything malnourished, it will take time to rebuild to full strength, though with renewed reader commitments and reliable advertising, our newsrooms can become vibrant again. It’s time to re-evaluate the desire for flash with the need for truth.

Newspapers Matter – Now More Than Ever Every town has one. In Fergus, his name is Ian. He is a champion of history, safeguarding a vast collection of newspapers titles at the local archives. Some titles pre-date Confederation but in recent years his workload has markedly slowed.

This region has lost its share of newspapers as seasoned publishers faced with shrinking subscription income, diminishing advertising revenue and ever-increasing costs, Dave Adsett gave up and closed titles. Oddly, it isn’t that news isn’t The Wellington Advertiser wanted, it is that people mistakenly believe it can be had at Fergus, ON www.wellingtonadvertiser.com no cost.

Nine in ten Canadians derive their news from trained journalists each week although a scant 20% value it enough to pay a fee to receive it. Advertisers, an essential part of the business equation for traditional media, continue to reallocate their ad dollars with online marketers—even though published surveys identify traditional Canadian media platforms as a more trusted source.

Ironically, 70 per cent of those online ad dollars are now spent with Google and Facebook—two U.S.-based, global conglomerates. An American study, The Knight Commission on the Information Needs of Communities in a Democracy, concluded that news is as vital to democracy as “clean air, safe streets, good schools and public health”. Governments across Canada, however, continue to rush headlong into the digital age by shifting advertising to these two companies with virtually no regard for

Canada’s cultural identity, let alone integrity.

In a recent Ipsos-Reid poll, 63% of Canadians were unable to distinguish between real news sites and fake news stories. Truth seems to be a casualty.

Perhaps that is why a generally stoic Ian, introduced at the beginning of this column, recently became quite emotional when discussing newspapers and their role within a democracy. You see, he is not just a keeper of history; he is a student of history.

The volumes and issues of newspapers past hold clues as to how corruption breeds, democracy wanes and tyrants come to power. Seldom has tyranny taken root overnight, and in virtually all cases, impairing the ability of journalists and destroying a free press are part of the process to destabilize a free society.

The family of Phyllis Mason would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff of the Biggar Hospital and Care Facility for the excellent care and compassion show to Mom during her stay -- one that she warmly considered and called “home”.

A special thanks goes out to everyone who was involved with the service; Grondin Funeral Service, Designs by Ann, Reverend Karen Kuzek, Cathy Donahue and the United Church choir, Bob Lemon and Dennis Notschke, all the family members who took part in the service and to everyone who attended.

We express our gratitude for all the support and kindness received from family and friends during our time of grief to those of you who brought gifts of food and flowers, who made phone calls and who generously donated to the Biggar Health Activity Centre and Leney Cemetery on Mom’s behalf.

We appreciated the lovely lunch served by the Perdue Rink Committee and the delicious roast beef supper catered to the family.

It was a “difficult time” and we assure you with your love, support and kindness, this “difficult time” was eased.

July 27, 1949 - September 13, 2018 Jerry Charles Althouse passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 13, 2018 at the age of 69 years old in Biggar, Sask.

He was born July 27, 1949 in Wilkie, Sask.

Jerry liked spending time with his family playing cards visiting and talking farming with neighbours and f r i e n d s . He loved watching his grandchildren play hockey, softball and 4-H light horse events. Many great memories were made on family fishing trips. He also enjoyed hunting with his son Quint and some of his neighbourhood friends.

Jerry married Gail in 1968 and together they took over the family farm in Handel, Sask. until 2013 when Jerry’s health started to decline, and in June 2015 they regrettably had to move into Biggar to be closer to Dr. Anton Muller.

Jerry spent most of his last winter in the Biggar Hospital until the decision had to be made that he was unable to return home. July 13, 2018 the Biggar Long Term Care Home became his home until September 13, 2018 when he lost his lengthy battle to his illnesses.

A Private Family Graveside Service was held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, 12:30 p.m., at Landis Cemetery, Landis, Sask. with Wayne Oscvirk officiating.

Celebration of Life Tea was held Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Landis Community Complex, Landis, Sask. with Albert Laval as Master of Ceremonies. Eulogists were his children, Quint Althouse and Nevada Leschinski; and Book Attendants were Larrissa Althouse, Sydney Leschinski, Charmayne Campbell. Honourary Bearers were all those who shared in Jerry’s life, and active Urn Bearer was Raymond Althouse.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 50 years and best friend, Gail (nee Lehnert); children, Quint (Delaine), Nevada (Trent); grandchildren, Raymond (Ahnastasia), Larissa, Jordy and Sydney; greatgranddaughter, Charmayne; two sisters, Marie (Wayne) Oscvirk and Sharon Pippin; along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Raymond Edgar; mother, Myrtle Faye (nee Gilles); and sister, LaDorne, and a very special aunt and uncle, Phyllis (nee Gilles) and Mac Martin.

There were two tables of three in play for the card party on September 21.

Once again, Kaiser was the game of choice. We also have a group of players who arrive most mornings to play cribbage. There was no Monday Kaiser on the September 24, since most of the players wanted to attend Gabe Silvernagle’s memorial. Gabe was one of our volunteer courtesy car drivers and was a congenial presence wherever he went.

Our condolences go out to his family. He will be missed.

Group One met on Wednesday, September 26 to plan activities for October. A special cash bingo

will take place on Wednesday evening, October 3. Two Thursday afternoon bingos will be held as well. There will be a potluck birthday party on Thanksgiving Monday. The carpet bowlers have no executive as yet, so carpet bowling will proceed on a causal basis on Tuesday afternoons. The popular jam session season begins on October 17. Both musicians and members look forward to these afternoons.

The final bingo of September was a held on the 27th with a fairly good crowd in attendance.

During the cooking process, the high heat causes the atoms in the molecular structure of the meat to move at a high rate of speed. If the meat is cut into soon after it has been removed from the oven, grill, or pan, it will lose a large degree of its vital juices that keep it moist and flavourful.

Stanley Cup dreams all over North America There can be only one Stanley Cup champion next June, but as the 2018-19 season gets underway, there are high expectations in many jurisdictions across North America.

With the off-season addition of the No. 1 available free agent, John Tavares, Toronto Maple Leafs’ fans have high expectations that they will snap the 52-year drought that began the season after they won their last cup, 1967.

With the acquisition in late September of all-star defenceman Erik Karlsson, the San Jose Sharks have high expectations that finally, this will be the season they don’t experience any playoff disappointment.

With most of their stars returning, including the sublime Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals have expectations of pulling off a repeat of their first Stanley Cup

Celebrating Biggar’s diversity

People have come from all over the world, left their families and their cultures to make Biggar their home. Nine countries in the world were represented in the gallery on Sunday, September 30. Nine families came

Each country at the International Food Fair had a presentation board filled with important facts about the country represented. The volunteer participants brought an appetizer and souvenirs, family photos, et cetera to really give us all a little picture into what their families left behind to make Biggar their home.

There was also a game for the children. Blank maps of every country were made available. The children had to read the presentation boards from each country, discover the colours of each country’s flag, colour their blank copies, and add the name of the country and their own names on their coloured remittances.

The girls coloured all nine maps, and did a very good job! Unfortunately

the red crayons did not last long as they were needed so some flags had to be pink... oh well!

The Biggar Museum & Gallery would like to thank all the volunteer participants of the International Food Fair held in the museum’s gallery on Sunday, September 30. Nine volunteers brought appetizers and memorabilia from the countries their families had left to come to Canada and to make Biggar their home.

We had representatives from… South Africa, Pakistan, India, Norway, Philippines, England, Scotland, Germany and the Netherlands. They all brought delicious tidbits and we all enjoyed a couple of hours of getting to know each other’s cultures!

Thank you for making this the successful event it was!
