St. Gabriel Parish held their annual Fall Supper at the Community Hall, Sunday, and many hands made the hard work go quickly and efficiently. From cooking to cleaning, setting up and serving, to selling raffle tickets, a great supper and time of socializing was held, all to celebrate the year past, and do a little bit of fund raising. Everyone could agree, it was a pleasant way to share a great meal.

What do the voters really want The election campaign is now in full swing -- that is if you believe CBC. Back at home in this riding the campaign is a little more low key.

A lot of talk in this election has been about the climate. It seems Trudeau and the Liberals are taking their cue from a 12 year old who is not even a Canadian.

However, there are more pressing issues. The economy for one and the state of rural Saskatchewan (and Canada). For years rural communities have seen their population decrease or remain stagnant and their business sector diminish. Biggar’s is no exception.

None of the parties have addressed this issue, not one mention.

It seems the squeakier the wheel the more attention is given to your cause. Years ago there was a phrase coined called “the silent majority”. The parties may be trying to tackle the wrong issues.

Instead of jumping on the bandwagon of those with the loudest voices, perhaps it is time to stop and ask those quiet types what they are thinking.

Chances are the pollsters haven’t even contacted them either.

For most people the aroma of a fresh pot of coffee stimulates the olfactory senses. It entices. It beckons.

The question is then: how to make the best cup of coffee.

That depends on who you talk to. For some the traditional French press makes the best cup of coffee. Having tasted this version when on a visit to New Zealand, I will take a pass. Then there are the home style expresso machines, but despite their price tag, do

What may surprise some is that the glass vacuum coffee maker is making a comeback. This is one of the oldest ways to brew the bean. They did lose their popularity when the eclectic percolator came on the scene.

And his speech was very effective though, because that guy was called “Padre� for the rest of his army life. (Anyone who doesn’t believe that this really happened can find a description of it on Page 23 of Black Yesterdays).

The fellow who writes this stuff sounds like he knew the answer to everything, and obviously doesn’t. The wheel that squeaks the loudest is still going to get the most grease no matter what we say. Mebbe anyone who feels wronged should squeak louder, I dunno. For if we don’t squeak all must be well, and if all is well, let’s have another cup of coffee or go golfing.

Surely we’ll find something interesting to talk about.

An old friend passes on, and a fellow feels that they should say something . . . but what?

Certainly a few remembrances should be made by a eulogist and the words they say we feel are spoken for all of us.

What more can a person say or do then what they have already said or done during during the person’s life?

There are people who are credited with what is known as “the gift of the gab�, but can their fine words mean more than the firm, heartfelt handshake of someone who cares, the glance of that quiet person back there in the crowd whose touch means more than a thousand words could ever say.

Some guys really feel called on at times to say something, anything and depending on a person’s P.O.V., often it is very effective.

We are attempting to harvest the crops, bringing in the garden, finding all the hats, scarves, mitts, toques and getting those tulips planted.

Everybody is busy.

It is time to say goodbye to the summer

brightness and snuggle down into the November’s quite dimness.

Before the conveniences of our modern world; central heating, year round fruits and vegetables, medical care available to all, the coming of winter was a genuine threat . . . people could die of starvation and disease, in the thousands.

Many rituals were performed to relax the fear of death by starvation. Most cultures called on the spirits of those gone before us to help us through the dark and scarcity of winter.

Most cultures have a ritual celebration at this time of year: • Halloween: The origins of which stem from ancient Celtic and Pagan rituals and a festival called Samhain is actually a time to honour those who came before us, to give thanks for a good harvest and appease the spirits to keep everyone safe and alive for the winter.

• Day of the Dead in Mexico: Is celebrated from November 1-2. On October 31, the Gates of Heaven are believed to be opened at midnight and the souls of children

return to Earth to be reunited with their families. On November 2, the souls of adults come down from heaven join in on the festivities.

• In the Philippines, Panagaluluwa: Children go door to door where they sing and ask for prayers for those stuck in purgatory.

• The Cree and Oji-Cree celebrate Anishinabek -- Ghost Dance: On the autumn full moon there will be four days of dancing and fasting.

So, as summer turns to autumn and autumn turns to winter, we at the museum, thought it would be a good time to revisit our ancestors.

We have framed photos from 1906 till the early 40s of the people who first came to our town and area. They began what we now take for granted; a safe, and abundant community.

They may not be related to you, but it was their efforts that build what we now know as home.

Your family may not have been here at the beginning, but as every picture is labelled, you will certainly recognize some names of those families that are still here.

It wasn’t easy for those who came here in the early 1900s, but so many thrived, and raised their families, made their mark on our community.

And for this, we are truly thankful.

Mega farms If anyone is still under the illusion that farming is anything other than big business these days a single farm for sale in Manitoba should exhibit one of the current reality.

What is being described as the “largest land package in Canada is for sale on the Prairies” in a Western Producer article rather clearly illustrates how Prairie farms in Canada have been trending to ever-larger operations.

The land, located near The Pas, Man., features 23,800 acres, just over 37 sections, for cultivation and is going for $53.3 million.

That would mean willing one of the largest lotto wins in Canadian history, and signing it all over to make the purchase, and then still need money to operate farm.

It is suggested in the article the price tag is reasonable, given it’s going for about $1,640 an acre.

In Saskatchewan, the article suggests prices can range from $2,000 to $3,500 per acre, while Alberta can see land go for $2,500 to $6,500 an acre.

If one extrapolates a mid-value price in Saskatchewan a quarter

section is going to fetch about $400,000, give, or take a few thousand.

For anyone not sure what a quarter section of land is, it encompasses 160-acres, which is the size of the plot of land the early immigrants to Western Canada were given, if they met certain provisions.

Certainly there are successful smaller producers, but even a farmer on a half section doing some niched farming to generate returns has a land base valued at near three-quarters of a million dollars, and then requires machinery, grain storage and other farm elements pushing the investment nearer one million.

Of course machinery is the other side of the coin in terms of farming being very big business these days. A new fourwheel drive tractor or new combine will each take huge bites out of a

million dollars before it is rolling around a field.

We often look at new small businesses popping up in a community with a certain amount of awe based on the individual taking the risk of investment in establishing the storefront.

Farms are now very big business. The size of farms has generally trended larger in major dry-land farming areas around the world since the end of the First World War, and when land prices spike higher that increases farm values. When land values climb machinery tends to rise in value as well.

There is a great cost

to growing the world’s food, although often that fact seems to be lost for many.

The only two activities that did not resume in September were Wednesday night kaiser and jam sessions. They will be resuming again in October. There is a date change for our birthday potluck in October.

On September 16 we had Monday night kaiser with two tables of players. The winners were

as follows: 1st, Joanne Kral with 191 points; 2nd, Delmer Friesen, 183 points; 3rd, Linda Vermette, 175 points, 4th, Ken Pearce/Pat Turner, 168 points. The highest scoring game was played

by Linda Vermette and Ken Pearce/Pat Turner, 59 points.

At Monday kaiser on Sept. 23 winners were: Ann Muc, 281 points; Ken Pearce, 217 points; Linda Vermette, 194 points; Isla Solanik, 182 points. The highest scor-

ing game was played by Ann Muc and Pat Turner with 57 points.

On September 26 we had bingo with a total of 13 players in attendance.

The winner of the half and half game of the day was Moe Goring and there was a tie on the blackout game between Vera Halter and Linda Vermette.

OBITUARIES COOKE, Geoffrey Ge passed away Geoff p peacefully on W Wednesday, Septtember 25, 2019 at the age of 85. He was born December 19, 1933 in Speeton, Yorkshire, E England.

He was pred predeceased by father Harry, mother Cissie and brother Peter. Geoff is survived by his wife Margaret; son Neil (Donna) and grandchildren Matthew, Chelsea and Nicole of Regina, Saskatchewan; daughter Kathryn (Tony) and grandchildren Erica and Joel of Ardrossan, Alberta; and daughter Jill (Greg) and grandchildren Ella and Abigail of Malmo Sweden.

Dad grew up in Bridlington England, met and married the love of his life Margaret and moved to Curry Rivel England where Neil and Kate were born. Dad and family immigrated to Canada in 1968 where he taught in Neilburg. The family then moved to Kerrobert, where he had accepted a position as a principal and where Jill was born. In 1977, they moved to Biggar where Geoff was also principal at the elementary school. He then retired and continued to be a part of the Biggar community for many years.

Dad liked to golf, bowl and watch the Riders and Jays on TV usually grumbling when they weren’t winning or playing well, but he truly loved watching them. Many who knew him described him as a kind, dignified gentleman. To us he was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who loved us unconditionally. He was truly a wonderfully sweet man.

Dad courageously battled cancer for 25 years, first with prostate cancer and for the last 10 years bone metastasis that slowed him down but didn’t prevent him from leading an active independent life. Our family would like to thank his friends from St. Paul’s Anglican Church, residents of Central Park Place in Biggar, Dr. Mueller and the amazing staff at the Biggar Hospital as well as numerous other friends for their help and friendship throughout the years.

Special thanks to the Pasqua Palliative care unit in Regina for their exceptional care in his final days.

NORAH ELSIE LONGWORTH ((née McFarlane) The family f of Norah Lo Longworth are ssaddened to a announce her passing at Oliver Lodge iin Saskatoon o on September 29 29, 2019.

No Norah was born to Arthur and Mary McFarlane on May 17, 1929 on the McFarlane homestead near Harris. Norah went to school at Hillview and completed her education at Harris. She worked at Birks Jewellers in Saskatoon, the Royal Bank in Rosetown and Eatonia and Woodwards Department Store in Vancouver. Norah said Albert met her at the train when she returned from Vancouver and they were married on June 20, 1951. Brian was born two years later, followed by Barry, Mary Lee, Sandra and Linda. Norah was a member of the Harris Auxiliary Legion, Harris Museum Board, Eagle Creek Historical Society and Hillview Willing Workers. Nothing gave Norah more joy than caring for her children and especially her grand and greatgrandchildren. Her happiest times were spent with family.

Norah is survived by her children Brian, Barry (Karren), Mary Lee (Don) Sapsford, Sandra (Ken) Traynor, Linda (Lorne) Pincemin; grandchildren Rebecca, Shelby, Keri, Julie (James), Scott (Sherry), Corey (Brittany), Jeanelle (Dayton), Nicole, Mitchell (Samantha) and Brooke; great grandchildren Denton and Sam; siblings Edwin, Roy, Sarah and Carle (Heather) McFarlane; sisters-in-law Edna (James) Start, Margie McHale, Barbara (Ted) Rowan, Helen (Elio) Particelli and numerous nieces and nephews.

Five tips to beat the flu before it begins (NC) School’s back in session and that means flu season is right around the corner.

Even if you’ve got the perfect flufree streak going, it’s important to take steps to prevent the flu so that you don’t risk spreading it to someone who can’t afford to get sick.

Children, seniors, children, people who are pregnant or have chronic medical conditions are especially vulnerable to the flu. Let’s beat the odds this season with a few handy tips to boost immunity: 1.) Eat nutrient-rich foods. Eating well is one of the best ways to ensure that your body has the nutrients it needs for a strong immune system.

Foods like citrus fruits and sweet peppers, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds, and probiotics such as yogurt are rich in essential vitamins C, E, and zinc, which are helpful allies in fighting off sickness. Consuming nutrient rich foods over supplements provides the added benefit of also containing things like fibre, calcium and/or healthy fats,

but before consuming any of these nutrient rich foods, don’t forget to wash your hands.

2.) Get a good night’s sleep. When your body is well rested, it’s more equipped to combat foreign germs that attack your immune system.

Make sure to get lots of rest before you start feeling ill to keep your immune system ready for whatever comes your way.

3.) Stay active. Working out has more benefits than just helping you stay in shape. Staying active can also help boost your immune system,

leading to a less likely chance that the flu will knock you down. People who exercise regularly may get fewer colds and recover faster.

4.) Minimize stress. Opposite to exercise, stress depletes the immune system. For this reason, it’s important to try to minimize your stress levels, especially at high-risk times. Both stress and the flu take a toll on the body, and experiencing one makes it more likely that you will experience the other. Try practising yoga or meditation to encourage relaxation.

5.) Get your flu shot. While the above steps are important in helping us boost our immune systems, did you know that 70 to 90 per cent of flu cases can be avoided through vaccination? The best thing you can do is to get your shot each fall to beat the odds and help protect those around us who can’t risk getting the flu.

Clean out the medicine cabinet Spring cleaning takes on an entirely new meaning when getting ride of expired or unsafe medicines.

Even though people may be quick to toss out expired foods or even clean closets of ill-fitting clothing, few individuals exercise such diligence with their medicine cabinets.

Some old medications, such as children’s cough and cold products, may no longer be recommended for certain ages. Having such medications in the house could prove harmful.

Taking inventory and cleaning out medicine cabinets frees up space and creates a safe home environment. · Toss away any expired products, whether they are prescription or over-the-counter medicines. The best way to do so is to bring the medication to a pharmacy for disposal rather than throwing it in the garbage or flushing medicines down the toilet. · Discard any unmarked containers or pill foils that are not in their original packaging.

· Test any medical devices, such as a nebulizer, blood pressure monitor and glucose testing equipment to ensure they are in working order. · Replenish commonly used items, such as fever reducers or headache medicines. Make sure there is a supply of bandages and first aid equipment on hand at all times. · Relocate medical supplies to an area that isn’t high in humidity, as steam from showers can speed up the expiration of medication. Storing medicines in the refrigerator won’t help, as that is a high-humidity area, too.

Checking medications and removing expired products from the house can prevent accidents related to medications and ensure that all medicines in the house are as effective as possible.

a couple of essentials included in a classic Thanksgiving dinner: cranberries and sweet potatoes.

In North America it is very traditional to serve cranberries with our Thanksgiving Day turkey. It is called sauce but is more like a form of jam or jelly.

Cranberries on their own are very acidic and therefore are not eaten raw, and very welcoming to the addition of sugar. These berries are a very durable fruit and thus their fall harvesting method is very unique.

After being mechanically removed from their bushes, the fields are then flooded. The cranberries float to the surface before being collected.

Cranberries are available to us in the supermarkets in a variety of forms. Although they are only available to us fresh in autumn, canned prepared jellies and jams still are the most frequently purchased.

When buying fresh, as with most fruit, look for ones that are plump, unblemished and bright in colour. They are also available frozen and in juice varieties.

Cranberries are a natural astringent and therefore known to be good for blood circulation, complexion, digestion,

and in the treatment of urinary-tract infections.

Try making a cranberry sauce from fresh cranberries this year.

There are many recipes available and you will find it a very tasty and satChef Dez isfying change.

It is a perfect item to prepare in advance of the holiday weekend.

Sweet potatoes and yams are also another favourite this time of year.

Many are confused about the two different varieties. Sweet potatoes have orange coloured flesh, while yams are starchier, less flavourful, and have white flesh. The names are usually mismatched with each other in North America.

Sweet potatoes (with orange flesh) are the more popular of the two, and therefore will be our focus.

These potatoes are completely different from the standard potato varieties we find in the supermarkets such as russets and Yukon golds.

In fact, sweet potatoes are not botanically potatoes at all. They are a root vegetable plant related to a beautiful flowering vine called Morning Glory, which is commonly planted as an annual and produces trumpet like flowers in an array of colours.

Despite the fact that they have just as many carbohydrates they have much higher nutritional value. They are loaded with beta carotene (recognizable from their orange colour) and are high in vitamins A and C. They have a moist, sweet texture, are low in sodium, and make an excellent source of fibre when eaten with the skin.

They are very versatile and can be prepared in just as many ways as standard potatoes.

They are even excellent in some desserts due to their natural sweetness. Try something new with sweet potatoes this Thanksgiving – your body will thank you!

Dear Chef Dez: I like the taste of sweet potatoes, but all I ever do is either bake them or boil/mash them. What do you recommend for something different to try?

Beverly H. Mission, B.C. Dear Beverl One of my favourite accompaniments for a turkey dinner is a sweet potato soup starter. It is basically a puree that is thinned out further with milk/cream to make a soup. I flavour it with salt, white pepper, cloves, nutmeg, and a bit of brown sugar. Other things you can do are endless: candied yams, Sheppard’s pie, grilled slices, roasted cubes, or in any application that you would normally use regular potatoes.
