Biggar Central School 2000 Senior Blazers hit the court Friday and Saturday, hosting their home tournament. Teams from Rosetown, Kindersley, LCBI, Asquith, Unity, Maple Creek and Davidson came to play the two-day tourney. Defeating the Rosetown Royals, 51-32, the Blazers then faced tough competition in the form of Kindersley and Davidson, losing both games. The Green and Gold would finish fourth overall on the weekend.

Donahue inducted into Sask. Ag Hall of Fame Biggar’s Chantelle Donahue is one of six agricultural leaders who will be inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame (SAHF) this year.

Donahue joins the ranks of other distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to Saskatchewan agriculture.

Along with Donahue, Clarence Hookenson, Roger Pederson, Arnold Petracek, Daniel Prefontaine and Neil Shantz were inducted.

Donahue has been a leader in the efforts to maintain agriculture’s social licence. She has been a driving force in the Canadian Journey to Public Trust, resulting in a more coordinated and strategic approach to building a public trust in Canada’s food system. Through her role at Cargill, where she is a vice-president, and her

Chantelle Donahue is the youngest inductee of the Saskatchewan Agriculture Hall of Fame. She enters the Hall for her work locally, provincially and participation on several boards, she has been instrumental in building,

keeping or improving supply chains, adding

outstanding agriculture sector and this year’s

inductees are indicative of the wealth of leadership and knowledge in primary agriculture, irrigation, animal health, value-added processing, agricultural research and building public trust in our industry,” SAHF board chairman Reed Andrew said. “Their leadership and vision have contributed enormously to the success of agriculture and we all benefit as a result of their work.”

The SAHF held its first induction ceremony in 1972. Each year, the organization formally recognizes individuals making significant and distinguished contributions to the welfare and improvement of Saskatchewan agriculture.

Inductee portraits are on display in the SAHF gallery located upstairs at the Western Development Museum in Saskatoon.

Time will tell when it comes to solving rural issues Prime Minister Trudeau announced a cabinet shuffle earlier this week.

Some faces have been shuffled around but there is one notable new face and one new cabinet position.

Bernadette Jordan has been appointed as Minister of Rural Economic Development. A new face to cabinet in a newly created position. She will be responsible for overseeing a jobs strategy in rural Canada, handling infrastructure needs and implementing more accessible high speed internet to rural areas. One could argue that accessible internet is really an infrastructure issue so why separate the two.

Jordan hails from Nova Scotia. What is troubling about her is her comments regarding the posting. “We’re committed to holding all 32 seats in Atlantic Canada. I am extremely proud to have this position and work with my colleagues to make sure that’s a reality in 2019.”

That’s great if you are speaking to Liberal supporters but the issues in rural Canada is about more than just what is happening in the Atlantic provinces. There are some very real issues in rural areas on The Prairies, even in the other provinces. It is hoped as minister she will seek to represent all Canadians across the country. It is also important for her to realize that there cannot be a one size fits all approach to rural issues.

While it is time for government to recognize that the issues in rural Canada are far different that urban areas, it remains to be seen if this Liberal government can get to the heart of the problems given the fact there is limited representation from that party in rural areas, particularly in the West.

Time will tell.

Canada’s dashed ‘energy superpower’ dream

Green, Resident Scholar and Chair in Energy and Environmental Studies, Fraser Institute As I was doing my year-end filing, I came upon some older studies from 2013, and as I leafed through them, was amazed at how things have changed. In 2013, the conversation in Alberta was about Canada’s future as an “energy superpower,” poised to develop its huge bitumen deposits and export them to markets around the world. Thenprime minister Stephen Harper said in 2006 that his government intends to build Canada into a “global energy powerhouse.”

Those dreams have been dashed, according to BNN Bloomberg, by five main factors including the oil price crash, out of control costs in the oil and gas sector, an increase in the discount Canada experiences selling petroleum products into the United States, growing opposition to pipelines and a leftward shift at three critical levels (Ottawa, Alberta and British Columbia). As Bloomberg observes, before the price collapse in mid-2014, truck drivers could make “upwards of $170,000 per year” and those with greater skills commanded much more.

The sky was the limit for oilsands production, and the associated profits and employment. But

by 2013, problems were developing. The Keystone XL pipeline to the U.S. was stuck in a regulatory process that still seems absolutely endless.

And even then, studies showed that shipping bottlenecks were starting to bite into Canada’s profitability. One study by CIBC found that Canada lost out on some $25 billion in oil revenues in 2012, and would lose $15 billion a year going forward until it resolved its infrastructure deficit.

A Fraser Institute study from 2012, which examined Canadian access to markets in the AsiaPacific region, found that “outdated regulatory processes and procedures, First Nations’ opposition, and unwieldy environmental review processes are impeding the timely development of the infrastructure required to transport oil to the west coast and beyond.” We called for the Alberta and B.C. governments to “act quickly, using legal and regulatory reforms to expedite development of the crude-oil transportation infrastructure needed for access to markets in the Asia-Pacific region.”

What have we seen? A proliferation of regulations and government interventions that have shaken investor confidence to the core. Cancellation of the Northern Gateway pipeline. Continued opposition to the Trans Mountain Expansion pipeline—even after its purchase by the feds. A new provincial

plan in Alberta to buy rail cars to transport oil. All of this in the face of declining investor confidence.

In addition to the regulatory cascade, as I observed in a study in October of 2018, investor responses to an annual survey of oil and gas executives showed sharp increases in investment deterrence in upstream oil and gas development in Alberta.

For example, Alberta’s fiscal terms (lease payments, royalties, production taxes and gross revenue charges, but not corporate or personal taxes) were only considered a deterrent to investment by 14 per cent of survey respondents in 2013. That deterrence perception reached 50 per cent in 2017. Respondents saying that Alberta’s fiscal terms were attractive to investment dropped by 22 per cent over that same period. With regard to Alberta taxation in general, only 16 per cent of respondents said this factor was a deterrence in 2013, rising to 52 per cent in 2017.

While I managed to clear my desk of old files, looking back is to see the death of the dream of Canada as an energy superpower. Without progress on the transport file and regulatory reform, that dream is farther away now than it was in 2006.

Snow fall in all corners of the globe

Kids nowadays: give them a knife and they make Spaghetti and Meatballs

not unique. Sometimes they are the same. There is at least one recorded case of identical snowflakes collected from a storm in Wisconsin.

Speaking of falling from sky, snow can fall one to six feet per second. That’s in the case of those with broad structures, the flakes that fall in the form of pellets travel to Earth even faster.

The Earth is closer to the sun in the winter. In fact in January the Earth reaches the point in its orbit that’s nearest to the sun. It is a common misconception that the drop in temperature is related to the distance to the sun. Actually it is related to the direction the Earth’s axis is tilting which explains why the two hemispheres experience winter at different times of the year.

Canada receives a lot of snow each year and our northern regions receive more than others.

We certainly feel that

we receive significant snowfall every season.

But, actually the snowiest city is Aamori City in northern Japan. Residents there experience 312 inches of snow on average.

They were taught how to recognize what plants will grow in our climate.

Then, using seed catalogues, they picked out their favourite vegetables, flowers and herbs, from all the varieties that will grow here.

Then they planned the garden designs and where they would plant their

In September, some left St. Gab’s and went on to

BCS2000. Some stayed and were joined by new members of the class. The remaining crops were all picked and used. The tomato crop was frozen.

In December, the new Grade 8/9 class came to the museum. With their thawed tomato crop on hand, together, they made spaghetti and meatballs for 30 people; themselves and as many of the old class that did the planting that could come! And there were no leftovers!!

The class is geared up to go again this year creating another garden and their own food!

Half past 10 already, eh? Where has all the time gone? I must have fallen asleep just sitting here -- and all the time has just flown past!

Time to write about something before the nurse comes to give me my evening pills! I’d better look a little more awake than I feel! It only seems a few minutes ago that I sat down and looked at the ceiling!

It almost seems to me, that in the past Y.T. must have written about everything!

What now, eh? What now?

Mebbe I should tell about the time that -no already! Mebbe Y.T. should jot a few lines about -- no! The tale has been told too many times already! The one about the time -- no, folks don’t want to see those things.

The issue of course is that the current sanctions which pop up to often impact the movement of farm products are not directly related to agriculture; an example being China in a snit over the arrest of a Huawei executive in Canada on a U.S. warrant which has that country threatening Canada with sanctions which could include limiting agricultural trade.

With such uncertainties in play, producer planting plans may be set today, but could well need adjustments before the wheels turn in the spring.

Lightning not just good — may make history Break up the Tampa Bay Lightning!

The best team — by far — in the National Hockey League is making a mockery of the competition this year, losing only eight times just past the halfway point of the season, and are threatening to rack up a historymaking point total.

Back in 1976-77, the Montreal Canadiens accumulated 132 points, a standard never beaten.

(Detroit Red Wings, in 1995-96 came closest, one point back.)

The Lightning, meanwhile, were on pace after 45 games to post 131 points. Pick up the pace by just a hair and, voila!, the record could be theirs. (Montreal’s from 42 years ago would still be a more impressive stat, however, since it was done in an 80-game schedule, two fewer than NHL teams play today.)

So who’s working the magic for the Jon Cooper-coached Lightning?

Nikita Kucherov makes the offence go, leading the league in scoring and, after 100 points last year, is en route to around 130 this year. Brayden Point, the Calgary native and former Moose Jaw Warrior, has emerged as great reward for a thirdround pick, sitting solidly within the league’s top 10 scorers and contributing

almost half of his goals (12 of 29 through Jan. 11) on the powerplay.

Steven Stamkos rounds out the Lightning’s big three with 24 goals in 45 games. Ondrej Palat, Tyler Johnson and Alex Killorn round out the best top six forward unit in the league. Through Jan. 11, the Lightning had scored 60 more goals than they’ve allowed, equalling the total they accomplished all of last year, when they had the best record in the Eastern Conference (by two points).

On the blueline, Tampa also has the reigning Norris Trophy winner, Victor Hedman, along with other all-star calibre defenders such as Ryan McDonough and Anton Stralman. The ‘noweakness’ lineup extends through the net, where Andrei Vasilevskiy is among the league’s top talents.

There’s concern of course, that going all out for a full 82 games chasing history could have negative repercussions in the playoffs. Last year’s Stanley Cup finalists (Washington and Vegas) finished fourth and third in their respective conferences.

July 14, 1941 - January 8, 2019 The family of Reginald Lloyd Turner regretfully announce his passing on January 8, 2019 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Reg was born on July 14, 1941 in St. Margaret’s Hospital in Biggar, Sask. to Fred a n d Ruby Turner. He attended Grassdale School, receiving his Grade 8.

He respected his teacher Mary Servege.

He was also a member of the Grassdale 4-H Club. After school years, he took up farming with his Dad. In 1972, he took over the farm, living alone for nine years.

His pride were his cows along with his many other animals. It was a very sad day when he had to put his dog, Buck, to sleep; and also when he had to sell out and see his cows leave the farm.

In 1982, he met and married Pat Wolff. Along with a wife he accepted four step-children. In 1995 they moved to Biggar. His favourite activities were square dancing, playing cards, carpet bowling and bingo. His hobbies were fixing things, woodwork and jigsaw puzzles. He enjoyed entertaining his company from England.

He was president of Ruthilda Grand Squares and the 1980 Springwater Homecoming. Some of his fondest memories were going to the Calgary Stampede, Niagara Falls and the Rocky Mountains Reg is survived by his wife, Patricia Lorraine Turner; step-children, Douglas (Dorothy) Wolff - Meagan, Danielle and Tylson; Carla (Brett) Danskin - Rochelle (Steven) Wolff - Raine; Lori (Dale) Oesch - Amy; Rhonda (Victor) Colbert - Nathan (Tania) Colbert - Derykah, Rhys; Chris (Sara) Colbert - Owen, Hudson; Melissa Colbert -Serenity, Harmony; Ryan Moore - Skye and Brettley; sisters, Fay Sittler; Myrna (Dave) Roberts; several nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, Darwin (Cathy) Vellacott, Allan (Bonny) Vellacott, Lorne (Judy) Vellacott, Brad (Rita) Vellacott; sisters-in-law, Donna Lofgren, Sharon Benesch (Bernie), Melva (Terry) Thoen.

Pirates christen new barn with beat-up of Timberwolves . . . by Paula Shortt Cruz McNulty is 18 years old and is from Biggar.

According to Cruz, “I think I put on skates before I could even walk.

I learned how to skate basically right from when I was born.”

He moved into Initiation in league play as soon as he was old enough.

There isn’t anything that Cruz doesn’t like about his chosen sport.

“I’ve grown up around it, it’s a way of life.”

When he’s not on the ice, he works out to keep in shape. He also participates in rodeo almost all year round which would definitely help him remain fit.

He is one of the goalies for the Nationals, and this is his third year playing for the team.

He’s always played goal and part of the appeal of playing with the Nationals is being on the same team as his dad, Clark McNulty.

“Growing up watching him play and always being able to ride the bus since I was 2 years-old to now,” he explains. “Now, it’s just so cool to actually 19013SS0 19013SS1

be out there on the ice with him.”

As for the traits he thinks make a good hockey player; a good attitude, always positive and being a leader, well Cruz probably has the best role model in his dad, as well as exhibiting those same traits himself.

Cruz doesn’t have any hockey pre-game rituals, but his dedication is evident in his tendency to be at the arena at least two hours before a game in order to get himself mentally prepared and get his “head in it”.

Cruz thinks things have

been going pretty well for the team this year and says, “Positivity is key. Once we get into the playoffs and Provincials we are going to have to step up.”

H e believes the biggest challenge will be Wilkie and he’s confident that the Nationals can give them a run for their money this season.

While he doesn’t watch a lot of professional hockey in his downtime, he does follow the Edmonton Oilers and his favourite goalie in the NHL is Corey Crawford.

As for the fans, he feels that the fans are important part of any sport and he relishes a big turnout for the team, but during the periods he is just trying to focus on his game.

“Our fans here in Biggar are awesome! You notice a lot of fans here every game. They’ve been with us since we came back from those couple of years that we took off. It’s awesome!”

He would also like to encourage more people to come out and support the team, “It’s good hockey to watch, especially now that we have Pat Baum back and lots of good guys playing. It’s pretty cool.”

So come on out and show your love for the Nationals.

New Horizons Activities

by Chasity Braitenbach It’s a bright new year and there is a lot to be thankful for at New Horizons.

I’m glad to be back and would personally like to express my appreciation to Joanne Kral and all of the office volunteers for filling in for me over the past year while I was on maternity leave. You did such a great job holding the place together in my absence. The volunteers worked extra hard over the past year filling the extra day each week that we required volunteer workers in the office.

It was such a blessing to be able to take the year off to spend with my family and not have to worry.

We are back to our regular activities after the holidays with the exception of Carpet Bowling, which does not begin again until the 29th. On January 7 we had 12 Kaiser players to our weekly game. In first place was Ken Pearce with a score of 304, in second place was Pat Turner with 242 points, in third was Ann Muc with 224 points and in fourth was Joanne Kral with 216 points. The highest scoring game

was played by Ann Muc and Joanne Kral with 85 points. On January 10, we had a total of 11 players come for Bingo. The halfn-half game was won by Evelyn Poletz, while the blackout game was won

by Linda Vermette.

I would like to make note that we have a couple lost and found items in the office including a pair of prescription glasses and a set of GM car key. If these are yours please stop down at the office to claim them.
