Grandson of country legend coming to Biggar, October 10

Tre Twitty, grandson of country music legend, Conway Twitty, will be at the Biggar Majestic Theatre this Thursday, October 10.

Tre brings his tribute show: “A Salute to Conway Twitty”. Also on the bill will be David James and his tribute to Waylon Jennings.

The true legends are few and far between, and there is no greater advocate for the life and legacy of Conway than his grandson Tre Twitty.

Every style of music has a handful of the real

thing and a truck load of pretenders. Some legends straddle categories and are even accepted and revered by fans and peers from all genres.

Hank Williams Sr, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Waylon Jennings and Conway Twitty all quickly come to mind.

Ah yes Conway Twitty.

Often known as the best friend a song ever had, Conway began his career in 1958 with the world wide pop/ rock classic “It’s Only Make Believe”. Within

a few years was he was solidly in the country camp representing a new hybrid of “country soul”. Right up until his untimely death in 1993, Conwa http://rocketlaunchentertainment. com/home/wp-content/ uploads/2018/01/ pp1801-tretwitty.jpg y was loved and respected by all as the “real thing”.

Tre Twitty hails from Mississippi possessed with the same love of all things musical just like his beloved granddad.

Growing up on a steady household diet of Con-

way, Elvis, Tom Jones and early 80’s pop, Tre then branched out embracing rock of the day like Guns and Roses, Kiss, Motley Crue and Kiss. This was augmented on the country side

by Hank Jr and original “outlaws” Waylon and Willie. Mix this with first generation southern rockers like Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers and you’ve got a kid that’s got his bases well covered.

When Tre was just 16, Conway tragically passed.

“I feel like my grandfather is one of the greatest singers who ever lived. Regardless of genre. His vocal control and dynamics are unmatched. His career is like no other in country music in terms of scope and influence. His early rock n roll work influenced everyone from the Beatles to the Rolling Stones to Motörhead.

And his country influence is obvious. His connection to an audience

was subtle and honest.

He needed nothing other than a microphone and a smile to captivate a crowd,” Tre explains.

Tre never tires of these songs because first and foremost he’s a fan of

great music. And with this catalogue of tunes to pick from there is never a shortage of smiles all around at the end of every show. And ultimately that is what it’s all about.

Tre Twitty’s Salute to Conway Twitty is Thursday, October 10 at the Majestic Theatre. Tickets are $45 and are available at The Independent.

A letter addressed to the patients of Dr. Neville Crane: It is with mixed emotion that I am announcing that I will be leaving my practice at Biggar Medical Clinic as of December 11, 2019.

This decision has not been made lightly, as I have enjoyed my time serving Biggar and surrounding communities as a family practitioner for the past 12 years.

There is not currently a specific physician able to accept my patient load at this time; however, we do have a physician who has tentatively agreed to take on a practice at our clinic but we just do not have a specific

date as yet. If you wish to obtain the services of another physician, I would recommend proceeding as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition for your health care. The local Health Region keeps a list of physicians who are accepting new patients.

A copy of your medical record will be kept at Biggar Medical Clinic and can be sent to another physician or released to you or another person only through your consent. I will be pleased to provide a summary of my care while you have been my patient, and with your consent, can

arrange to have a copy of your file transferred to your new physician’s office. This can be requested by contacting Biggar Medical Clinic, or requested directly from your new physician’s office.

It has been my great pleasure to have provided you with health services in the past, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to meet some wonderful people throughout my years in practice. Best wishes for a healthy future.

During our summer travels we took in a few festivals in the local area

and one thing you could count on was honey booths. They sold honey in various forms of course but what was intriguing was the flavours of honey available. One booth had 24 flavours while another had up to 48.

ern Canada is alfalfa honey produced from the purple or blue blossoms of alfalfa. It is light in colour with a mild scented flavour. Chefs like this variety because it doesn’t overpower foods which makes it a perfect choice for baking. Tea lovers also like this kind.

But, the booths had so many choices. Acacia honey. Aster honey. Avocado honey. Basswood honey. Clover. Chestnut.

Fireweed. Eucalyptus.

Pine tree. Wildflower.

These were only the “natural” flavours. There were some manufacturers that had artificially flavoured honey creating yet another level of flavour choices. After a number of tastings it was

impossible to distinguish which flavour was the best.

Just as wine is paired with food to create the best flavour so, too is honey. For example yellow box honey is great for adding to your tea or coffee and can be used in baking breads or cakes.

It does sound confusing but don’t worry the people who work at the booths know their stuff and are very helpful.

September is National Honey Month. There are 20,000 known species of bees. A single worker bee produces 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her lifetime, which means 22,700 bees are needed to fill a jar. Over 50,000 bees live in one hive.

Jack Glavin That body by the ditch back there, Was Glavin from out West!

“Out West,” you say?

How far away, From where the sun went down?

A million miles or more I think.

No one has ever guessed How far a European war is from a prairie town.

If I live until i am 100 years old I will never forget Jack Glavin.

Hey, wait a minute there Bob, you were born in 1919. Mebbe I’d better make that 105 or so years. If I don’t forget and I forget a lot lately.

Oh well, I guess a lot of us can’t live forever.

I I live to 105 years old I will never forget Jack Glavin . . . not only because he was a great guy but because he was raised out here in Saskatchewan.

Can a fellow ask for more than that, eh?

The first time that I knowingly met Glavin, we were in a holding position on the Maas River during 1944. We were in an old busted up house in the little village of Ryen, Holland north of Waaliviyk, and because a few shells had landed nearby we heard a rustling noise coming from the smashed up attic.

As there was no stairway up, only a hole in the attic floor Major Pete McCordick and a tall corporal held me up, flashlight in mouth to see what was making the rustling noise. As I stuck my head through the hole expecting it to get blown off, Y.T. finally looked into the loft.

Right into the small blue eyes of a small rabbit nibbling away on some branches.

The bunny stared at me for a few seconds and then almost shook his head: “why is that guy over here” he seemed to think, “a few thousand miles from home, trying to kill his fellow man when he should be at home nibbling on some branches like any other sane creature.”

The Major and Jack let me down . . . we all laughed.

we staggered back into town we were covered (even our faces) with the mud of the dreadful place. We carried our weapons and walked into a celebration that was taking place. Kapelsche Veer was something else.

Some 300 men were killed on the 10 acres there.

This page isn’t large enough to tell of Bob Mason Glavin’s escapades, and sometimes Y.T. will tell a little more about our “tour in Europe”, eh?

After the war was over, a lot of us were billeted in the old “grain show” building. There was a big rec room, and as Y.T. was sitting there one evening, he saw a very familiar face in the crowd . . Jack Glavin.

As I looked toward him, he looked at me. Y.T. arose from his seat and stuck out his hand.

“Hello Jack,” I almost yelled.

“Hello Bob,” he said.

When we got closer I realized it was Jack’s brother.

“Jack often told me about a Saskatchewan man in the Argylls” he said, “and you are the only one here wearing a Glengarry headdress. I knew it must be you.”

I stared (I think) . . . he looked so much like Jack.

Kapelsche Veer was something else. And Glavin was there too.

(Look it up on your cell phone if you like). I had a radio on my back and heard his name a few times.

K.V. was supposed to take only a few hours. As it was, it took seven days.

Quite a few fellows were killed there, including the complete force of the enemy. They called more than once but the “high command” killed them anyway.

Glavin and Y.T. were in the same billets, and as

rorists had been turned on us and Jack got killed just north of the Kustenkanal. Jack had been made a sergeant the day before.

“I told Jack that the day he was made a sergeant he would be killed.

I guess that is how war is.”

Y.T. could mention a few more incidents including our short time with Jack Glavin, one of which was when we came out of Kapelsche Veer.

We had our weapons in hand and dripped mud all over the room that Batallion Headquarters was in, but to finish this bit here goes . . .

indexation formula. In 2010, the government introduced the formula, which gives equal weight to changes to the Consumer Price Index and Average Hourly Wage for Saskatchewan. This annual review provides regular and predictable changes to the minimum wage.

Increases are announced by June 30 and take effect on October 1 of each year.

Biggar’s first skyscraper turning 100 this month

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery For 100 years, this building has presented all sorts of services and sales to the people of Biggar.

Mr. Harry Gordon Eamon was a pioneer businessman and entrepreneur in the early days of commerce here in Biggar. He came to Biggar as a barber and very quickly flexed his entrepreneurial skills and became a very successful businessman, dipping his fingers in many successful businesses.

In 1913, he built a Pool Hall and had plans to enlarge this building to add more tables and maybe even a bowling alley.

By September 1919, he had built a three storey red brick structure.

Inside was the Nifty Men’s Store on the main floor. The second storey was for elegant suites for office purposed and the third storey was going

to be used for various fraternal organizations.

In the Nifty Men’s Store one could purchase a coonskin coat for $225 or a black and brown one for $45. He carried a full line of men’s and boys’ shoes and even carried the “onyx” shoe for the ladies.

to Mr. W. T. Ellsworth of Assiniboia, Saskatchewan in 1929.

His daughter Deltra Eamon is in our Musical Legacy Exhibit in the museum. I discovered in the HIstorical Timeline that Miss Eamon was one of the five finalists in Miss Canada of 1950.

Important reminders to residents Asquith Town Council held its September regular council meeting on Sept. 11.

Attending were Mayor Gail Erhard, Councillors Dylan Claypool, Sue Sawicki, Harold Edwards, Ted Goodnough, Jordan Claypool, and Harold Edwards.

Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft. The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the August 14 regular council meeting. Council made a motion to accept the August 2019 financial and August 2019 bank reconciliation is presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts paid in the amount of $30,566.32 and accounts payable of $62,938.52 were accepted as presented.

Paving of Lunn Street has been postponed.

Patching/repairing streets in town began week of September 9.

The Town of Asquith is looking for volunteers

for a fund raising committee to fund raise for a possible spray park in the town. Posters will be displayed throughout the town.

Autumn clean up week is October 5 and 6.

A reminder that there is another Clean Waste Day this month on the 24th.

Council would like to remind all residents that if you see something that is a crime or looks criminal to call the RCMP. If you see individuals driving dangerously, speeding or if you see something that just doesn’t look right, please call the RCMP. It does not do any good to come into the town office the next day to report it to staff.

It is extremely important that the RCMP have a handle of how much crime, no matter how petty, is occurring in town.

Recently a family in Asquith lost two of their beloved dogs to possible poisoning, as they were previously healthy dogs and this is the only solution they came up with.

They got out of their back yard for a brief 10 to 15 minutes, then were retrieved only to have them die within the next hour. Please be reminded not to leave out any poisonous substances of any kind, not only can this happen to animals, it could be potentially harmful to small children.

A reminder goes out to all individuals that the Town of Asquith has a burning bylaw which dictates that one can have a fire in town for recreational use only. Only clean wood/firewood can be burned in your fire pits -- no painted/treated wood, refuse, leaves, et cetera should be burned. Be kind to your neighbour and to the environment and burn only clean wood materials. Also, no bonfires are allowed -- please keep the size of your backyard fires moderate.

Harvest advances but cold, wet weather puts operations behind Warm weather and wind has allowed combining to resume, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report for September 10 to 16.

Twenty-three per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up from 18 per cent last week, still well behind the fiveyear (2014-18) average of 50 per cent for this time of year.

Thirty-six per cent of the crop is now swathed or ready to straight-cut. A general rain fell over much of the province with the

largest amounts being reported in the central and southern regions.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwest region, where 37 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeast region has 28 per cent combined and the west-central region 26 per cent. The northeast region has 15 per cent combined, the eastcentral region 12 per cent combined, while the northwest region has 10 per cent.

Ninety per cent of winter wheat, 88 per cent of fall rye, 78 per cent of field peas, 75 per cent of lentils, 39 per cent of barley, 17 per cent of durum and oats, 13 per cent of spring wheat and six per cent of canola is now in the bin. An additional 56 per cent of canola is swathed or is ready to straight-cut.

Fourteen per cent of the durum is estimated to grade 1 CW, while 46 and 28 per cent is estimated to grade 2 CW and 3 CW, respectively. Thirtyone per cent of the pea crop is estimated to fall in the 1 CAN

grade, 58 and 10 per cent are estimated to grade 2 CAN and 3 CAN, respectively. Sixteen per cent of the lentils are estimated to grade 1 CAN, while 55 and 22 per cent is predicted to fall in the 2 CAN and 3 CAN category, respectively.

Across the province, topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 14 per cent surplus, 77 per cent adequate, eight per cent short and one per cent very short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as three per cent surplus, 83 per cent adequate, 11 per cent short and three per cent very short.

Most crop damage this past week was due to localized flooding and strong winds.

There have been some reports of crops bleaching and sprouting in areas with excess moisture.

Farmers are getting back out in the field and continuing with harvest operations as the weather permits.

Cookbooks: Inspiration at our fingertips One of the oddest couples I have ever met was after one of my live cooking performances at a local fair.

A woman in the distant crowd was watching the tail end of my show and approached me afterwards.

“I can see by watching you that you love to cook,” she said. “I can see that the crowd was inspired by your show, but my husband and I, we never cook. You could even go as far as saying that we hate to cook, so we never do it. You may think I’m exaggerating, but I’m not. We never cook. We eat in restaurants, get take-out, fast food, and buy microwave prepared dinners.”

I was shocked, to say the least. My first thought was “why are you telling me this?”

Then she went on and asked me: “I bet you can’t guess what we use our oven for?”

I shrugged my shoulders and she said “to store cookbooks. It’s wasted space for us, so we use it as a bookshelf.”

This was the oddest thing I have ever heard.

“Why do you even own cookbooks, if you don’t

cook?” I asked.

“Doesn’t everybody?”

She replied.

Good point.

She’s right.

Everyone has a collection of cookbooks, either large or small, and apparently even people Chef Dez that don’t cook. I am assuming that they must have received them as gifts?

We all get into cooking ruts at times in our lives and our meals in the meantime suffer from lack of stimulation – you’re not alone.

However, right there in your own home you have an assortment of cookbooks, a stack of culinary inspiration, just waiting to be opened, pondered through and explored.

I have a challenge for you. At some point over the next seven days from reading this column, I challenge you to open up one of those cookbooks. Not one that you received as a gift, but one that you purchased yourself with your hardearned money. I want you to relive the moment when you bought it. The moment when you are flipping through the pages with excitement and motivation, saying to yourself “I gotta have this book” as you put your cold hard cash down on the counter.

Find those recipes again, and this time, make them.

Motivation can easily be stimulated from outside sources (such as cookbook recipes in this

case), but true motivation comes from within you. You have to take that first step, the steps that follow, and the final step to make something happen. If you are truly discouraged with the same old meals you are making, you will find a way to make this happen.

Many cookbooks simply just gather dust because we either forget about them, or more likely find that there is too much emotional pain to learn new recipes and we stick with what we know . . . it’s easier.

I guarantee you this however, if you take the steps, and keep trying (even through times of possible mistakes or failures), you will succeed.

Your meals will become new again and with any luck you will find happiness in your new found inspiration that has been there, waiting for you, all along.

Take this success and let it inspire you to keep learning new recipes. Chances are you have a kitchen and you probably plan to continue to eat the rest of your life, so this will not be a waste of your time.

I could at this time also make the suggestion of searching the Internet for recipe ideas, but I think that with your vested interest in the cookbooks you have already purchased, you will be more driven (and in the end, more fulfilled) to create this victory yourself.

Cliffhanger: the signature hole at Greywolf one of the best

by Bruce Penton It’s an 18-kilometre drive up a winding mountain road and the anticipation builds through every turn in the road. Finally, Greywolf Golf Course appears at the top of the mountain at Panorama, B.C., and the adventure is about to begin.

And what an adventure!

The 20-year-old course, part of a cluster of terrific tracks in the Invermere, B.C., area, should be on a must-play list for any golfer serious about the game. Mountain courses have a natural geographical advantage and course designer Doug Carrick did an exceptional job of shaping an outstanding golf course within the rocks,

trees, creeks and mountain slopes with which he was presented. “It’s amazing how playable it is considering it’s built into a mountain,� said Justin Brown, director of golf at Greywolf.

The course has a steady climb on the first three holes before the spectacular fourth, a steep downhill par-4

called “Descent.� By the sixth hole, you’re ready for a par-3, but this hole, the ‘Ciffhanger’, is no ordinary par-3. There’s no escaping a poorly struck tee shot. The 155-, 175- or 200-yard hole has a tee box and a green and nothing but a treeand rock-filled canyon in between. A couple of years ago, the Canadian Open at Glen Abbey

offered golfers a chance to play a simulation of the hole. “We know that Cliffhanger draws a lot of people and it should, because it is one of the best golf holes I’ve ever played,� general manager Dane Thorogood of Totem Golf, said in a Calgary Sun interview.

Totem Golf has owned Greywolf’ since 2013. “I can’t think of a hole like it anywhere in the world,�

Thorogood said.

A number of positive changes at Greywolf have been made since the ownership change, said Brown. A new, 6,000-sq.ft. clubhouse/restaurant was built, replacing an ATCO trailer, offering a “more fitting image for this calibre of course,� he said. The new owners also improved course drainage, paved all the cart paths and undertook a project (currently under way) to build 12 new forward tee boxes that will provide an option for guests to play the course from about 4,600 yards.

The Panorama Mountain Resort also offers about 500 condo units, providing a number of stay-and-play options for visitors.

While Greywolf provides a true challenge to golfers of all skill levels, a four-hour trip around the course is memorable — good golf or bad. “The

scenery is what blows them away,� said Brown.

Don’t just take Brown’s word for it. ScoreGolf’s ranking of every golf course in Canada has Greywolf at No. 15. The same publication’s ranking of public courses (the Top 59, which uses value as one of the criteria) slots Greywolf in at No. 5 — behind only the two Cabot courses in Cape Breton (Cliffs and Links), and the national park courses in Jasper and Banff. “That’s pretty good company,� said Brown.

Brown said all the changes the new owners have made since 2013 “have paid off.�

The short season at Greywolf runs from around the first of May to early October, but Brown said “just shy of 20,000 rounds� will be played in 2019.

And as word spreads around the world about the beauty and playability of Greywolf, that number should continually rise to mountains-peak levels.

If you go, by car it’s about a three-hour, 30-minute drive from Calgary along gorgeous mountain highways — first the Trans-Canada though Banff National Park and then via B.C. Highway 93 through Kootenay National Park.
