Weather continues to hamper 2019 harvest Despite rainfall and cool weather producers were able to make harvest progress this week, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report for September 3 to 9.

Eighteen per cent of the crop is now in the bin, up from 11 per cent last week but well behind the fiveyear (2014-2018) average of 43 per cent for this time of year.

Twenty-five per cent of the crop is now swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Warm, windy and dry weather is needed for producers to return to the field. Harvest is most advanced in the southwest region, where 31 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeast region has 24 per cent combined and the westcentral region 18 per cent. The east-central and northeast regions have eight per cent combined while the northwest region has seven per cent.

Eighty-three per cent of fall rye, 79 per cent

of winter wheat, 66 per cent of field peas, 63 per cent of lentils, 28 per cent of barley, 10 per cent of durum, seven per cent of spring wheat and four per cent of canola is now in the bin. An additional 36 per cent of canola is swathed or is ready to straight-cut.

Estimated average crop yields for the province are 39 bushels per acre for field peas, 1,452 pounds per acre for lentils, 35 bushels per acre for canola, 23 bushels per acre for flax, 36 bushels per acre for durum, 42 bushels per acre for spring wheat and 66 bushels per acre for barley.

A large portion of the province received rainfall last week.

Most crop damage this past week was due to localized flooding, strong winds, light frost and hail. There have been some reports of crops bleaching and sprouting in areas with excess moisture.

Straker and pals open Arts Council 2019/20 season The upcoming Biggar and District Arts Council season will feature a Saskatchewan icon - three, in fact, in the form of Jeffery Straker, Annette Campagne and Jack Semple this October 2.

Jeffery Straker and Friends, featuring Jack Semple and Annette Campagne, opens the season at the Majestic Theatre for a musical journey with the Saskatchewan singer/songwriters.

Straker, the host of the show, has performed over 100 shows per year across Canada, and has recorded for CBC radio’s ‘Canada Live’, had a music video chart in the top 10 on Much More Music Canada and has toured internationally as far as Peru, Mexico and Chile.

His tour stops range from intimate house concerts to club and theatre shows and include recent sold-out concerts with several Canadian symphony orchestras, performing his own songs, often being compared to Harry Chapin, Carole King and Billy Joel.

Originally from small town Saskatchewan, the classically trained pianist was raised by a church organist mother and an auctioneer father.

has seen him become a national top 10 finalist in the Canadian Radiostar Songwriting Competition and a top 20 finalist in

the global Unisong Competition as well as twice placing in the top 10 in the prestigious Mountain Stage Newsong contest.

His songs have been licensed to TV, film and for theatrical use.

Jack Semple grew up on a farm north of

Regina.

He started his musical career playing with various Regina-based bands, and later relocated to Toronto in the late 1980s to become the lead guitarist of The Lincolns, a popular funk and rhythm and blues band. He left the band after two years and returned to Regina to pursue a solo career and to spend more time with his family.

After his move back to Regina, Semple contributed to television and music scores and appeared in the title role of Guitarman, a 1994 television movie. Semple also commenced a solo recording career that has resulted in the release of 10 albums.

Semple continues to perform as a solo artist and with The Jack Semple Band, across Canada and now being championed across America!

Semple is an epic guitarist and a soulful singer. His music is like Stevie Ray Vaughn meets James Brown meets Robben Ford. He is a Juno Award winner and Western Canadian Music Award winner.

Annette Campagne boasts a 30-year career as an international recording and touring artist, it is a testament to faith and determina-

tion that this Canadian singer-songwriter is still producing great music and songs.

Singing in both English and French, Campagne was a founding member of the iconic group ‘Hart Rouge’ before embarking on a solo career, boasting an impressive list of accomplishments: 12 albums, several radio hits and multiple tours across Canada, Europe and the United States.

Tinged with a bit of philosophy and humanitarianism as only an old soul can deliver, Campagne offers up a heady mix of melodic pop and roots flavoured-rock that perfectly captures the tumultuous times we live in, but without the usual angst. She uses her versatile voice to cut down to our most raw emotions, the ones we drink down with a chaser, stirring the pot just enough to nudge us along in our quest for a better world and creating the space for hope and faith to emerge.

No sign of any campaigning yet The federal election has been underway for a week now and while, the leaders have been busy on the national front, here in Biggar we have yet to see a candidate.

That’s not to say they are ignoring Biggar rather that the campaign trail has been relatively quiet to date.

It’s interesting that according to Elections Canada there is only one confirmed candidate and that is an independent.

However, Wikipedia has four candidates listed for Carlton-Trail Eagle Creek. None have come forward with either advertising or contact information to confirm or deny these reports.

This is a very large riding so there is a lot of area to cover for the candidates and their teams. Even at that one would expect to see some signs appear on lawns around town.

Campaigning during harvest in Saskatchewan is a bit of a gamble as people have other things on their mind. One of them having a constant battle with weather Hard to say who is more unpopular in this region these past few weeks -- Justin Trudeau or Mother Nature.

Festivals are an all round benefit for everyone Festivals promote diversity, they bring neighbors into dialogue, they increase creativity, they offer opportunities for civic pride, they improve our general psychological wellbeing. In short, they make cities better places to live.

David Binder Festivals. They are held year round but I think the most interesting ones are held from May to October. There is something about being able to walk around outside checking out the booths that is appealing.

Maybe it’s the fresh outdoor air (or the smells).

I read David Binder’s

words and after much thinking festivals are good for our mental well being. It’s good to get away from the everyday chores and just simply enjoy being with people.

Even the kids seem to like festivals. It gets them away from the games and iPads and smartphones. How refreshing to say “hello” to an actual living breathing human.

event we stopped in at a blueberry tea. It was in a small hall and it was sponsored by a church group. These ladies were working hard to cut the pieces of pie. But, they were oh so good. Home baked which is the best kind.

We enjoy stopping in at festivals in small communities. Sure, the urban centres have their events too but as Binder says these festivals promote civic pride. This is certainly evident in local communities. It takes a lot of hard work to get these things organized.

And, when the people show up and enjoy themselves, laugh and talk as they meet neighbours

it gives the organizers a special feeling of accomplishment. After all, that’s what the day is all about. It reinforces the fact that not everything has to be big in order to be successful.

It does something more. Quite often it brings communities together. We talk a lot about diversity but sometimes that can divide us.

At a festival you might get a Ukrainian booth next to an Asian one.

What better way to get to know each other. The next time you meet on the street chances are you will smile and wave.

It does make the community a better place to live.

Gopher tales “Gophus Snarus” which inhabits much of Canada is not to be confused with “Go Fours” down to the tool crib which inhabited much of Cominco when Y.T. worked there.

Genus and Go For Us, both tailess, are found in most parts of our Western world. Go For Us: foreman found on the construction places of our world, often recognized by their white hard hats.

In the times of the past, Y.T. has met both types, and sometimes I wonder.

Well . . . sometimes I just wonder.

When we ere just young boys in the early ‘30s, gophers were our only income. Two cents for every tail delivered to the municipal office.

Wow! Were we ever big time operators.

The big Depression had just begun (1929-30) and it wasn’t very long until we could swagger into the local cafe and order a couple of jaw breakers (candies), five cents please. Those were the days, Eh? After the crash of 1929, prices got so low and crops so poor that the rural municipality gave two cents for gopher tails in order to get some crops at all. Bill, our oldest brother had grown out of such play as gopher tail hunting, and Walt and Y.T. had the big pasture all to themselves.

The gopher tail crop was fairly good. Some summer days we must have netted over 10 cents income.

The RMs gave out a little bit for crows too. We didn’t know it, but often we felt that we were at the top of the income bracket. We didn’t know any better.

We didn’t have much competition though.

Badgers often dug out many of the holes, but badger fur was needed by the furrier people to make coats and as some folk killed the badgers we more or less had the fields to ourselves. We almost felt that we were in a Depression.

It was in 1953 that Phyllis and Y.T. decided one Sunday to go to Hope Hall Church. We bundled up our children and took off for church and met the crowds who lived around there. Of

course each one brought their children to Sunday School. As the building was fairly small, the Sunday School class was held in one corner, and when it broke up early, about 10 young people had nothing to do, so it being a nice day, we took them outside to play and Y.T. went with them to show them around a little.

We looked at the trees growing there and at a few flowers but there wasn’t much to see.

Suddenly one of the little girls screamed when a gopher in our midst poked his head out of his hole to look around.

Of course all of a sudden the whole bunch of children were excited by the wildlife show in front of us. Y.T. felt that his duty was to quiet them down. After the little kids “oohed” and “aahed” a few times and seemed excited to see wildlife in their midst, Y.T. got a twig and fastened a shoe lace on it. I placed it over the gopher hole and we all patiently waited.

Within a few minutes the gopher poked its head out of the hole and I quickly pulled the twig and voila, snared the gopher around the neck.

I loosened the string and the gopher lost no time in scurrying back down its hole.

Church was out anyway and the children excitedly told them of what they had just seen. Real life right there in the church yard.

Phyllis told me of the grass hanging from the little girls’ dresses, on Sunday yet! And yet Y.T. wondered if the children had learned as much around that gopher hole as they had learned in Sunday School.

Robert Burns I think it would be a mistake if I didn’t tell some of Y.T.’s encounters with “Go For Us Formandis” types Bob Mason over the years.

I met a few at the mine where we worked.

“Hoe” my foreman and I were working overtime one evening on the third floor of the mill. We had lugged repairs up three floors, and were inspecting our job when he said: “Go down to the tool crib and get a 13/16 wrench.

“But Joe,” I said, “I looked at all the nuts on this pump and they are all 7/16 size.

Joe gave me the steely look reserved to foremen.

“Look,” he said, “I said to go down and get me a number 13/16 wrench -now get.”

I got.

The tool crib man three floors down was having a cup of coffee (and working overtime): “When I finish this cup of coffee I’ll be with you in a minute,” he said.

A few minutes later (quite a few) he finally set his cup down and strode over to where a lot of tools were piled on the bench.

He looked at one after another and said, “I don’t see one here.”

Y.T. went over and found one right away. “!3/16 is an odd size and no one has ever asked for one before.”

democracy offers us by casting a vote.

The trend toward less and less eligible voters actually casting ballots is disheartening when many in the world can only dream of the freedom to do so living under various stripes of dictatorship preventing the simple act of putting an ‘X’ on a ballot.

As for the farm sector, the issue over the next month is how to put the sector into the mix as an issue candidates truly care about.

Here on the Canadian Prairies candidates are going to nod knowingly when asked about the importance of the sector, but does their concern, or ours as voters play at the table when the federal parties sit down to develop policy?

The problem for parties is many when it comes to how much focus to put on agriculture, starting with the limited number of seats where farmers are a significant portion of voters. We might like to hope that such things are not a factor, but the truth of one vote

per person puts greater importance on urban constituencies than those that are mostly farm/rural.

It becomes ever harder to sell major agriculture investments to city-dwelling voters who have limited understanding of farming, or its importance to the greater Canadian economy.

Then within the farm sector there is the problem of finding policy that covers most producers.

What is good news for a wheat or canola producer on the Prairies doesn’t necessarily resonate with a potato producer in Prince Edward Island, or a wine producer in British Columbia.

And of course the opposite is also true.

Support for fish farmers or a flower grower is not likely to be seen as particularly good news in Saskatchewan, even though it would be support for the broader sector of agriculture.

It has to be a conundrum for federal parties to sit down to work on policy and representa-

ment that more should be done for farmers, but then they offer up a dozen divergent ideas based on the type of farmers in their area of the country.

It is simply not as easy to develop meaningful national agriculture policy as, for example putting more dollars to be spread out for municipal infrastructure renewal, or senior housing.

So the onus will be on voters here to make sure to listen closely to what each party is saying in terms of farm policy, and to ask candidates how they plan to be heard in Ottawa in terms of supporting Prairie agriculture.

by Chasity Braitenbach Last week at New Horizons we had our first stitching meet-up of the season after the summer break. There was a good group of ladies that came down with their crochet and knitting projects.

Our birthday potluck was on Monday, September 9 with a good turnout of 34 people. Our halfand-half winner of the day was Isla Solanik and the entertainment for the day was card bingo with a variety of prizes to be won. I’d like to give a very Happy Birthday to our members: Toni

Abye, Olive Boisvert, Helen Buxton, Chris Cormier, Donna Eckart, Lena Ellard, Jack Fines, Margaret Flowers, Laurie Heese, Ken Hynne, Gail Herzberg, Evalynn Mann, Dot McDonald, Morley Ries and Hazel Watson.

On September 12 we had bingo with a turnout of 19 players that came down to take their chances at winning some money. On the half-andhalf game we had a tie between Linda Vermette and Mo Goring. The winner of the blackout game was Evelyn Poletz.

Curlers eyeing distant Olympic Trials The 2019-20 curling season is under way (does it ever really end??) and competitive curlers across the land have brought out their Sharpies to circle a date on their calendars two years’ hence.

Oh, they care about the Grand Slam events and they care about the provincials early next winter, and they care about the Brier and Scotties, to be played in Kingston, Ont., and Moose Jaw respectively, and they care about the world curling championships in late spring, but what they are really concentrating on is qualifying for the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in Saskatoon starting Nov. 27, 2021.

Winners on the men’s and women’s side in Saskatoon will proudly wear the Maple Leaf at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing, and all the shuffling of personnel that took place among rinks within the last 18 months or so was done with the Trials in mind.

falling at the end of the curling season in the spring of 2018. Marc Kennedy, Kevin Koe’s vice-skip, decided to retire. Recruited to fill his spot was B.J. Neufeld, who was available after members of the Mike McEwen rink scattered. McEwen joined forces with fellow Manitoba skip Reid Carruthers, which left a number of curlers in the Keystone Province in a ‘free agency’ situation, so to speak.

Then, this past spring, third Ryan Fry left Brad Jacobs’ rink after a controversial winter, and hooked up with the John Epping foursome from Toronto, bumping Craig Savill into involuntary retirement. Fry’s spot was immediately filled by Kennedy, who decided one year away from competitive curling was enough to recharge his batteries.

CARD OF THANKS It’s time to say “so long”. Sixty years ago I came to this town called Biggar.

It was to be a two week try out. Some try out...two weeks that turned into sixty years. This town and community fast became the most wonderful place in the world.

Wonderful people and a girl by the name of Evonne Wright, became my beautiful new world of love, marriage and two fantastic sons, David and Doug.

Life just got better with my farmer and railroad friends. Life in Biggar was the greatest. I Thank You all for making it so wonderful.

Thanks is hardly enough for such a marvelous life. God Bless You All and may we continue to enjoy our time together. A big “THANKS” to you all.

Students at Lord Asquith School gear up for the new year Principal’s Message by Brett Kirk (please see Ms. Stack if you are interested), and LAS Unplugged, a coffee shop style showcase of music and poetry taking place the evening of November 7.

I want to encourage all kids to get involved in some form of extracurricular activity this year. It is a great way to make friends, develop social skills, and become part of the school community.

A new school year always brings changes to a school, so there are some things that will look differently this year.

Ask any teacher and they will tell you how exciting the first week of school is for kids (even if some of them don’t always show it) and LAS is no different.

It was great to see all the smiling faces, and the school was buzzing every day. We started off the year with a delicious pancake breakfast for the students, staff and community members. The efforts of all the parents and students who helped with cooking,

set up and clean up was greatly appreciated.

We are also excited to have our fall extra curricular activities underway. Practices have already begun for volleyball, cross country and football (at Delisle Composite), The Central Valley Athletic Conference crosscountry district meet in on October 2, so it’s a quick season for our runners.

working on homework and getting caught up on their classes. We have listened to their concerns, so our Grades 10-12 students will now have the option of either reading or doing homework during the reading break time. Just a reminder to parents and students that attending Reading Break is not optional.

Bell Schedule -- The teachers met at the beginning of the year and discussed changes that could be made to the bell schedule.

There were concerns about the inconvenience and confusion of having two separate bell schedules running in the school.

We have tweaked some of the class times, and added a 15 minute break in the morning for our Grades 6-12.

It is tough for kids to engage in deep learning for three straight hours, so the break has been a good chance for the students to unwind and refocus. Students are not to be leaving the school grounds during this time.

New staff members -- We have some new/returning staff members that I would to introduce: Stephanie McCormick has spent quite a bit of time at LAS in the past few years as an intern and substitute teacher, and we are thrilled to have her join us in the Grade 6/7 classroom filling in for Ms. Bachmeier while she is on maternity leave.

Ms. Chuback is with us on a halftime contract and will be doing some Middle Years ELA support, and working in the Grade 2 classroom.

Mrs. Bindle is an EA who will be joining us every Thursday. She will be spending her time supporting learning in the elementary end.

On a personal note, the teachers, students and community members have given me such a warm welcome. It has been great getting to know the students and community and I am really excited to be at Lord Asquith School.
