Although the students will tell you they don’t want school to start, secretly they were happy to reconnect with their friends and getting back into routine.

Most of us are immigrants

by Delta Fay Cruickshank for the Biggar Museum and Gallery Most of us are all sons, daughters, grandsons and granddaughters of immigrants. Canada is the nation it is because of immigration. Each immigrant family had their own stories of why they left, and yet they all came to create a better future for their families.

Each family has many stories about how hard they worked; breaking land and working all the hours there were to get established.

At the turn of the century, the immigrants were coming mostly from Europe. Nowadays, immigrants continue to come from Europe, but many more are coming from Asia. And yet, these New Canadians still leave their cultures and their

families behind. And they work hard, taking on mental jobs, working all the hours there are to establish themselves in their new, chosen country. They have come to better their future and the future of their children. It is a story each of us share, as we are all, mostly, descendants of immigrants.

In the past, there have been some horrific stories of immigrants not being welcomed by other immigrants! “Those people take jobs, get too much money from the government, are lazy, et cetera.” Were your relatives lazy, or got too much money? Not likely.

All these rumours come from ignorance. Ignorance of the stories of why people come, what they left behind and who they left behind.

Here at the museum, we are having an event on Saturday, September 30. Our summer student, Rachel Diehl, has been organizing it, with the help from St. Gab’s teachers, Mr. Prpick and Mrs. Elliott.

We are calling it “The Many Faces of Biggar... Celebrating our Diversity.”

Prune your elm trees starting September 1 Saskatchewan home and property owners can start pruning their elm trees again soon. The annual ban on elm tree pruning comes to an end August 31.

Provincial regulations prohibit pruning elm

trees from April 1 to August 31 each year to reduce the risk of spreading Dutch elm disease (DED). The elm bark beetles that can carry DED are most active during this time of year, and fresh cuts from pruning

Small business owners to MPs: “Stop hitting us with new taxes” The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) will deliver 14,691 petition letter to MPs, from business owners concerned about the increased tax burden being placed on them by Ottawa.

“As the federal Liberals convene at their caucus meeting in Kelowna and Conservative MPs in Winnipeg, independent business owners want their MPs to know that

they’re being unfairly targeted. Small business owners have been slammed with increased payroll taxes, higher EI premiums, and new environmental levies -- they feel like they’re being hit from all sides,” said Dan Kelly, President of CFIB. “This is deeply troubling because it shows a growing disconnect between Ottawa and the small business community, the group this government

is counting on for job creation, innovation and economic growth.”

The federal government has also broken its election promise to lower the small business corporate tax rate to nine per cent and recently announced new proposals that would dramatically alter the way small businesses are taxed in Canada. If implemented, the new tax rules would restrict small business owners

Morneau claims “income sprinkling” unfairly allows business owners to reduce taxes by shifting some of their earnings to family members who don’t have to work in the company. It’s important to prune properly, whether you hire someone or do it yourself. Pruning incorrectly can actually spread DED and other tree diseases. Under provincial regulations, commercial pruners of elms must complete a recognized training program or be supervised by someone who has.

It is illegal to transport or store elm firewood because the wood attracts the beetles that spread DED. Dispose of elm wood promptly by burning or burying it in a location approved by the local municipality.

Op-Ed: Beware The Slippery Slope Of Removing Historic Names

by Premier Brad Wall For what they are worth, I offer words of caution to the group of Ontario teachers and perhaps others who apparently wish to remove Sir John A. Macdonald’s name from schools.

John A. Macdonald used the word ‘savages’ to describe aboriginal peoples. What is so unacceptable as to be obscene today was tragically the stuff of daily parlance then. It is a terrible but undeniable feature of our history that dims any light that shines on the memory of our first Prime Minister. One could say the same about some of his policies, and those of his successors, especially as it concerns Canada’s First Nations.

Yet, he was also the Prime Minister who established the North West Mounted Police (today the RCMP) that led to its first Fort in southwest Saskatchewan, in partial response to the Cypress Hills Massacre of aboriginal peoples by whiskey traders. He built the Canadian Pacific Railway, against all odds and some propriety, binding the country together and warding off the American expansionist desires of manifest destiny.

He is a father of confederation.

This is a slippery slope, and one that threatens the preservation of all our history, that

which commends as well as that which shames.

Where does all of this lead? Macdonald’s words and some of his actions are reprehensible, even though conventional to the period.

What about Abraham Lincoln? In his 4th debate with Stephen Douglas in 1858 he said, “I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the black and white races -- that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people...”

Five years later, he would sign the Emancipation Proclamation.

And what about Saskatchewan’s own 7th Premier Tommy Douglas, for whom a school is rightly named in Saskatoon along with an office building on Albert Street in Regina, and a provincial park?

No doubt that school is attended by a diverse group of students, some perhaps with intellectual disabilities.

Here is what he said and believed about the intellectually disabled in his Masters thesis, ‘The Problems of the Subnormal Family’: “Thus sterilization would deprive them of nothing that they value very highly, and

would make it impossible for them to reproduce those whose presence could contribute little to the general wellbeing of society.”

Is it not a short walk between the calls to remove the name of our first Prime Minister from schools, to the closing of the Lincoln memorial in Washington DC, or the removal of Tommy Douglas’ name from a Saskatoon school?

Rather, let us use these name-

sakes for the opportunity to teach our history, to remember the achievements of those who have went before.

And yes, let us also resolve to never forget their mistakes; their misguided and dangerous beliefs to which many, if not the majority, once clung.

From the ideas and words and actions we know to be reprehensible today, we can also learn... and vow to leave behind.

Why NAFTA renegotiations need to tackle the digital economy

by Jacqueline Palladini, Senior Economist, Conference Board of Canada There has been a steady flow of fears, criticisms and threats being hurled at the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) these days—notably by U.S. President Donald Trump. There are many issues at play, from the Chapter 19 dispute process to softwood lumber. But as Canadians, it is paramount that we keep our eyes on the prize. And the bottom line is this: Canada stands to benefit from a renegotiated NAFTA that better reflects our current business realities and digital economy.

What does this mean exactly? NAFTA was created before Windows 95, before Google, before Amazon. The way commerce is conducted and the types of products and services in demand have changed so much since 1994. Yet NAFTA does little for technology companies trying to attract talent across borders. It does little to protect intellectual property in software. It does little to regulate cross-border data flows.

On these three fronts, Canada needs to push hard to defend its interests.

Canada depends on digital connectivity in all areas of its economy, from efficient payroll systems, to sensors that monitor the pressure of oil pipelines. Digital connectivity can enable smaller businesses to reach global markets. Canada has a big stake in supporting two-way trade in digital products: In a globalized environment, Canadian businesses source and purchase production inputs online and make use of digital technologies and data to reduce costs and increase efficiencies and even innovate. Canadian exporters create digital products, ranging from video games and movie

leaving little for Canadian media outlets and putting their survival at risk.

Therefore, we need some thoughtful flexibility built into NAFTA to allow for Canadian competition in a winnertakes-all world. For example, we recommend maintaining NAFTA’s current broad cultural exception in NAFTA 2.0, which would ensure that Canada keeps its ability to support cultural content, whether delivered digitally or not.

Things get murkier still when you consider Canadian data privacy protection. Some 90 per cent of Canadian internet traffic is routed through the U.S., whether it be social media, email, or cloud-based data warehousing used directly or by another company. Under the USA Patriot Act, the U.S. government can access the content, putting Canadians’ data privacy at risk, and in its goals, the U.S. said that it seeks to “ensure that NAFTA countries do not impose measures that restrict crossborder data flows and do not require the use or installation of local computing facilities.” These restrictions and requirements can hurt businesses and keep them from expanding beyond their borders. A balance must be found between data protection and rules that enable trade and innovation.

While international trade in products has stalled, cross-border data flows have quadrupled since 2012, and are set to grow fivefold in the next five years. But the rules of trade have not caught up to these realities. We need clear rules on digital trade, and in what appears to be a once-in-a-generation opportunity to modernize a 20th century deal to reflect a 21st century world, Canadians must seize it.

effects, to intermediary software used in financial transactions; Canada is also quickly becoming a leader in autonomous vehicle technology and its corresponding software. But all of these gains rely on a strong and seamless digital connection to the world.

To that end, a modernized NAFTA, one that’s in line with Canadian interests, would address the movement of people across borders, balance out intellectual property rights, and improve e-commerce. Several of the recommendations we’ve made in a recent report, NAFTA 2.0 and Canada, are straightforward concrete improvements. First, we recommend a provision preventing countries from imposing customs duties on products and services delivered electronically in order to support Canadian exports, whether they be digital products or just products sold online. We also recommend NAFTA’s list of professional occupations be updated and rules be clarified around business visitor visas.

This will allow digital professionals and investors to meet face-to-face with potential customers to sell their products and train customers how to use them—unlocking business opportunities on all sides of the borders, including in software, technology, and digital trade.

There are some caveats. Digital players like Amazon often deliberately seek monopolistic market domination, and while this isn’t too concerning when it comes to niche markets, it can be a big problem when a company dominates entire industries by driving out competition. Facebook and Google, as another example, are collecting twothirds of online ad spending in Canada,

Mustard: the great spice on the Prairies

“Our Jim” Controversially, of course, there have been a few rogues named Jim too! (They tell me that the “Highway Man’s” name was Jim (I dunno!). Yet none of them, good or bad, could mean more to us than “our” Jim! Our own personal Jims may never become millionaires or kings - (except in their own backyards!), rob a stagecoach or have an issue of the Bible named after them, but they do have the far greater distinction of being a part of “our” families!

This almost reads as though the rest of us, “Bills”, “Joes”, “Mikes”, “Jacks” and “Petes” don’t count for very much - except that every one of them is part of Y.T.’s own family!

This Jim guy, a son of the so-called “Baby Boom!” has inherited all the world’s genes (The good times and the bad times) from way, way back. His Dad was a kind of haphazard “make do” type (although mebbe that is a plus, as far as genes go!), whereas, his Mother’s genes (some of the world’s best!), really show up when the young people are around!

There is no doubt (at least to many of us!), that all our young people (including our Jims), are leading a kind of extension of our own lives, except that the “life-experiences” which seem “old” to us, are absolutely fresh and new to them! This is a part of that “Greater Plan” that none of us quite understand!

There are probably many people who don’t like the above kind of

stuff - or mebbe haven’t stopped to think about it much! But in this country we have a law telling us that we “have” freedom of - well . . . freedom.

“Our Jims” got off to a heck of a bad start (we all do!).

The “Great Depression” (when everyone seemed to “make do”) was just behind and the age of technology (when very few of us knew how things worked, way just ahead, and “Our Jim’s” parents couldn’t help very much.

But he was young, wanted to learn how to make a living - and he did!

All along the way he kept on picking up bits of new information about this and that until his proud parents almost counted on him to know everything!

The future that his aging parents almost pared, seemed to make sense to him, and they relied on him to “know”!

“Our Jim” used to laugh quite a bit when he was young, especially if he was accomplishing something (even if it was hammering in an old rusty nail!), and this was a good habit - forming thing I think, for it got so he laughed even when the nail bent!

Not a “Haw Haw Haw” like most of us call a laugh, but a kind of giggly acceptance that sometimes things will go

wrong!

Life itself is a little bit like that I think and one of “Our Jim’s” parents fondest dreams are that acceptance of life will be carried on!

Yours Truly thinks that he has done a lousy job of pointing out here that “Our Jims” are those special guys in everyone’s lives. One who is needed to hold any family society together!

Maybe many Bob Mason of us (including Y.T.) don’t know it, but those “Our Jims” from the other side of the worlds, are going to be a big part of that society someday!

What kind of a Freudian philosopher does Yours truly think he is anyway?

We are all created equal, eh?, but where we go and what we do after we grow out of that “equal” paint, is affected more by “Our Jims” than by anything else!

Sure, there are many people amongst us, whose genes tell them that they were born to be great. But most of the world’s respect goes to the millions of “Our Jims”, who just “go with the flow”, and fix the old mouse trap rather than build a better one!

“Our Jim” doesn’t want world acclaim for his efforts. he just sits back and waits - working is

the thing to do and life is there to be lived.

Some people of the world use only their brains, others just use their muscles, but all of us like to think that “Our Jims” use both, so that every part of their lives has been lived!

Many of us feel that these ambitions (or goals if you like), have been handed down to us through the genes of a thousand generations of past “Jims” who have gone out and faced whatever the world provide.

The society of the world will sure be okay if our future is full of “our” Jims!

Mebbe a lot of this scrawled stuff seems a little crazy (well, crazier than usual!) to some readers, and Y.T. has no doubt but what some of it is, but we don’t give these guys the credit that is due. These fellows are the cement that holds our ever-shrinking world family together.

They know that many of the moves “Our Jims” have made in the past, are the right ones to follow! And so they are out there, in every small _____ of the world!

How about us? We are out there too, eh? We are the “Readers” that Y.T. often mentions in his defense of writers, in a way, we are more important than they are!

Yours Truly apologizes for pretending to know everything.

So when you meet “Our Jim” on the street just say “Hello” as though he was an ordinary guy, after all Y.T.’s “phoney Baloney” he thinks that he is an ordinary guy!

Almanac filled with lots of good information

by Calvin Daniels Every once in a while something rolls across the desk of a newspaper editor which is interesting and yet fun, and such was the case recently for me.

In this case it was the arrival of the 2018 edition of the Old Farmer’s Almanac Canadian Edition.

The book itself brought back a flood of memories for me.

The book was always in my grandparents’ home, and usually at our place as well.

I am not sure if the annual almanac was the more often read book in the family, the numbers likely skewing toward that honour going to the Sears and Eaton’s Christmas catalogues thanks

to my daily thumbing through them for weeks leading up to Dec. 25, but the annual was certainly a ratty mess by year’s end from constant review.

The almanac is just one of those publications that is both quirky and insightful. It is part trivia, which is always fun, with just enough serious data to intrigue.

I suppose that is the reason the edition appearing on my desk was the 226th in long

history of the almanac.

Let that sink in just a bit. We in Canada are celebrating the 150th anniversary of our country.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac was being published for 76 years before Canada Calvin Daniels existed. It launched in 1792.

In the case of the review copy which arrived, I of course took it home to peruse.

In general terms the almanac has not changed

The key elements are still there, including the Calendar of the Heavens.

The book itself notes the

calendar is “the heart of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. They present sky sightings and astronomical data for the entire year and are what makes this book a true almanac, a “calendar of the heavens.” In essence, these pages are unchanged since 1792, when Robert B. Thomas published the first edition. The long columns of numbers and symbols reveal all of nature’s precision, rhythm and glory, providing an astronomical look at the year 2018.”

And then there are the weather forecasts for the coming year. In a world

Crop Report for the period August 22 to 28 Relatively warm and dry weather has allowed producers to continue making good time with harvest, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report.

Twenty-six per cent of the crop is now in the bin, well ahead of the five year (2012-2016) average for this time of year of 16 per cent combined. Twentyfour per cent of the crop is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Harvest is most advanced in the southwestern region, where 49 per cent of the crop is now combined. The southeastern region has 37 per cent combined, the west-central region 23 per cent and the east-central region 14 per cent. The northeastern region has four per cent combined, while the northwestern region has five per cent of the crop in the bin.

Ninety-eight per cent of fall rye and winter wheat, 76 per cent of lentils, 74 per cent of field peas, 42 per cent of mustard, 32 per cent of durum, 26 per cent of barley, 21 per cent of triticale, 14 per cent of spring wheat and 10 per cent of canola have now been combined. Eighteen per cent of soybeans, seven per cent of oats and chickpeas, two per cent of canary seed and one per cent of flax have been combined. Thirty-nine per cent of canola and 25 per cent of spring wheat and mustard are swathed or ready to straight-cut.

The majority of the province received little to no rainfall this past week; the highest rainfall for the week (10 mm) was reported in the Rama area. The Pierceland area still holds record for the most rainfall in the province since April 1 at 543

mm.

With the warm temperatures and lack of rainfall this past week, topsoil moisture conditions continue to deteriorate.

Across the province, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as one per cent surplus, 26 per cent adequate, 44 per cent short and 29 per cent very short.

Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as one per cent surplus, 20 per cent adequate, 37 per cent short and 42 per cent very short.

The majority of crop damage this past week is attributed to lack of moisture, insects and strong winds. Producers continue to scout for insects such as bertha armyworm in canola.

Producers are busy combining, desiccating crops and hauling bales and grain.

But we, especially as farmers, are drawn to weather forecasts like moths to a flame, so looking to the almanac predictions is just a natural thing to do.

The good news, the almanac suggests a generally mild, dry winter.

And next summer, well wet is the word for much of the Prairies.

Meanwhile, business optimism remains buoyant in the east, with owners in PEI and Quebec showing the highest index levels at 72.7 and 71.5 respectively.

Business owners in New Brunswick (67.6) and Nova Scotia (66.7) are also reasonably upbeat, along with Manitoba (65.2), Saskatchewan (52.9) and Newfoundland and Labrador (54.5) remain the most pessimistic, but movements in the August results are in a positive direction.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) released its latest monthly Business Barometer, which reveals optimism among small business owners in Saskatchewan increased slightly to an index of 52.9 in August, from 50.0 in July, which is almost seven points below the national average index of 59.8.

“While optimism among Saskatchewan’s small businesses gained back in August what it lost in July, its index of 52.9 is still the lowest in Canada,” said Marilyn Braun-Pollon, CFIB’s Vice-President, Prairie and Agribusiness. “Hiring plans also remained weak in August with only eight per cent of business owners looking to hire (2nd lowest in Canada) and 13 per cent planning to cut back on full-time staff over the next three months.”

Mom had a great love for life. Her faith in God guided her throughout her lifeʼs journey and will guide her sweetly and gently into the light and pure love of Godʼs garden.

A celebration of Momʼs life was held on August 23, 2017 at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Landis, Sask. with Father Edward Gibney as celeberant. The Majestic Theatre is a volunteer run community facility that is looking for a paid contract position for a

CUSTODIAN. The job will include but is not limited to the following: - Cleaning and preparing the theatre for upcoming events and movies, (list of cleaning duties will be provided).

- Maintaining inventory of the cleaning supplies, paper products, softener salt and any other products needed.

- Lawn care and general outside maintenance throughout the year. This would include snow removal and ice removal of sidewalks and weed control around the building.

- General maintenance of the inside of the building. This would include replacement of light bulbs, cleaning windows and small fix jobs.

- Reporting monthly to the Theatre Board with a written report detailing hours worked, duties performed and any concerns to be reviewed by the board.

- This contract position will be managed by the successful applicant. (If the individual cannot fulfill their duties for a short period of time, it is up to them to find a trustworthy individual to perform the duties and it is the contract holder’s responsibility to pay that individual.)

- This position will pay $20 per hour of reasonable work time. Monthly hours will vary.

- This position will require an able, mature and agile person that can lift upwards of 60 pounds.

But that does not mean they are left to the mercy of the elements when it comes to risk management. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Farming comes with inherent risk that needs to be managed,â&#x20AC;? explains Gwen Paddock, national director of agriculture and agribusiness at RBC. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But how much do farmers think about and plan for risk? So many factors can affect revenue streams and net profits beyond weather and markets, from employees to interest rates. The key lies in planning, starting with determining the worst-case scenario you are willing to accept in any given year.â&#x20AC;?

approach starts with knowing the facts. Once you understand the risk factors, you can consider what actions for managing each loss or risk are appropriate for your operation. Here are three strategies: 1. Make risk planning part of your business strategy.

The more you understand the types of risk you are exposed to, the more likely your decisions will be based on fact and analysis rather than emotion or instinct. Follow a systematic assessment and analysis process in order to arrive at a proper strategy.

2. Know your baseline for risk and be comfortable with it. Ask yourself how much you could afford to lose in your very worst year.

For example, if weather takes out 20% of your production, how does that translate into dollars and cents?

When you know your bottom line, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll be more comfortable taking measures to compensate where you can.

Eating with The Road Hammers I love being a Chef.

Food is a universal language that touches the lives of almost everyone.

No matter what road of life one travels along, chances are they have an appreciation for a good meal. If you know me and my wife Katherine, you will know of our love for not only food but also for music. Recently we had the pleasure of meeting Canadian country rock group, The Road Hammers; composed of band members Jason McCoy, Clayton Bellamy, and Chris Byrne. They are currently touring to promote their latest album “The Squeeze” which was released May 12th of this year.

We have always been a fan of their music, so it was interesting to chat with them, not only about music, but their eating habits too.

Therefore, I am happy to shareparts of our conversation with you for a glimpse of what the culinary lives of these musicians are like. The first question I had for them was “what do you tend to eat while on the road touring?

Jason: “We’re pretty good at trying to avoid junk because we’ve all toured so many years.

When you’re younger

you can eat anything you want. (I like) steak, potatoes, that kind of thing.

For some reason a steak makes me feel good.

My subconscious reminds me that I want protein... it’s also a comfort food kind of thing. Butter chicken is my other thing; awesome because it seems like the curry kind of smartens everything up in your world.”

Clayton: “Indian food and sushi. (I) like to venture outside (the box).”

Chris: “I think it’s interesting to find great little holes-in-the-wall kind of restaurants that are not standard box store restaurants.”

Next Question: You’ve been on the road for a while; if someone could welcome you home with a meal, what would you choose?

Jason: “Anything my wife makes. She’s got the gift. Her spaghetti is stellar. Her hamburgers are

magic.”

Clayton: “My mom’s zucchini casserole. That is the ticket. It’s carrots, zucchini, and cheese... lots of cheese.

And she puts croutons in there as well.

Chris: “Chic peas and Spolumbo’s sausage roasted with fresh roseChef Dez mary and little baby tomatoes.

Spolumbo’s is a company in Calgary. It’s a spicy Italian (sausage) like a chorizo almost.”

Third question: What are your favorite dishes from your childhood?

Jason: “My mother’s salmon casserole. Rice and it’s got cheese all through the rice and a layer of salmon, and then it’s got cheese with green olive in it. Then a bit of cheese crusted on top.

It’s incredible.”

Clayton: “My grandmother’s perogies when I was a kid. She’s right from the old country.

dough and the way it was prepared.”

Chris: “Mom’s homemade bread. Growing up in Newfoundland we didn’t buy store bread.

Fresh out of the oven with a little bit of jam on it.”

Last & final question: When you get a chance to cook, what is your signature dish that you like to make?

Jason: “I’m not much of a cook. I’m more of a campfire cooker kind of guy. My kids would starve if it was up to me.

My wife’s the Gretzky of cooking so it’s like how do I get in there and say oh I’ll make dinner tonight? I’m best at making chocolate milk.”

Clayton: “I do have a go-to I like: this bow-tie pasta I like to make with capers, fresh basil, baby tomatoes, and mix it all up with some olive oil and sea salt. My kids love that and I’ll make a huge pot of it and it’ll last all week.”

Chris: “It’s a pasta as well. It’s a couple of onions, capers, Kalamata olives, a lot of olive oil, cherry tomatoes or some sundried tomatoes if you got them kicking around.
