Speed takes centre stage at the Biggar Recreation Valley every Wednesday evening as Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association (SBRA) athletes and their four-legged teammates power around the infield arena for fast times and exciting action. Not all the competitors are fast, but they are still entertaining, learning the barrel pattern and instilling a love of animal, the teamwork between horse and rider, the thrill of speed and the friendships forged from competition.

Council Minute highlights The regular meeting of Biggar Town Council was held August 4, at 7:15 p.m. in the Council Chambers. Attending the meeting were Mayor Ray Sadler, Aldermen Ron Arnold, Jim Besse, Alan Boyle, Penny McCallum, Eugene Motruk, and Kirk Sherbino.

Council resolved that the General Accounts Paid in the amount of $131,495.04 and the General Accounts Payable in the amount of $13,907.10, be approved.

RCMP stress “safety first” when operating ATV’s

by Sgt. Colin Sawrenko, Biggar RCMP Recently, Biggar RCMP attended to an ATV fatality.

Tragedies such as these are a reminder to all All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) users to place the utmost importance on safety.

A quick Internet search on ATV fatalities in Saskatchewan will shock some readers. Unfortunately ATV fatalities are an all to often occurrence in our province.

Biggar RCMP urge ATV owners and users to ensure they take safety seriously.

Safety includes: Properly maintaining your ATV, ensuring safety equipment is operable,

wear approved safety equipment, use caution on unfamiliar terrain, drive within your capabilities, familiarize yourself with the laws under the All Terrain Vehicle Act of Saskatchewan, never operate an ATV under the influence of alcohol or drugs, do not exceed a safe and reasonable speed.

Failing to take safety seriously in any one or more categories places you and any passengers at risk.

ATV’s include: four wheeled (quads), three wheelers, four-wheeled side-by-side’s, dirt bikes, dune buggies, tracked vehicles, Be responsible. Be safe.

Harvest slow to advance Producers have nine per cent of the 2015 crop combined and 10 per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s Weekly Crop Report for the period of August 11 to 17.

The five-year average at this time of the year is two per cent combined and five per cent swathed or ready to straight-cut.

Sixty-three per cent of fall rye, 59 per cent

of winter wheat, 40 per cent of field peas, 34 per cent of lentils and 14 per cent of chickpeas are now in the bin. Three per cent of canola and four per cent of mustard are now in the bin, with 14 per cent of canola and 21 per cent of mustard swathed or ready to straight-cut.

An RCMP collision analyst was on scene, and an investigation into the cause or any contributing factors was ongoing, but details have still to be released.

Dear Editor: I am concerned that fracking is putting wealth before health.

It’s easy to see who gets the wealth, the big oil and gas companies. Wealth is their number one priority and takes precedence over the health of the local people, their animals and the environment. The people take all the risk to their health, water, air, property values, earth quakes, noise and oil field traff fic.

What do they get in return?

They lose what they have.

Throughout history there has been the same amount of water on our planet, although the ratio of liquid to frozen changes. Now for the first time the amount of water in the hydrological cycle is being reduced as massive amounts are being used for fracking and are lost forever.

The water used becomes so toxic and contaminated that it can no longer be used, even for fracking.

This “flowback” as it is called must be disposed of.

The big questions are how and where?

Like nuclear waste, no one wants it in their backyards so what do they do? They pump it back underground – out of sight, out of mind – where it has the potential to contaminate ground water and cause earth quakes.

This toxic fracking fluid can no longer be called water.

In my opinion this is a crime against nature and humanity.

Fresh pure water, or the lack of it, is the major environmental concern, now and into the future.

Another parallel problem is carbon sequestration. This waste product is also stored underground.

The problem is that Carbon, CO2, has twice as many molecules of oxygen as carbon. This oxygen is being removed from our atmosphere forever, and that’s a long time.

Personally I am pretty partial to drinking pure water and breathing pure air.

I think my grandkids would appreciated it too.

To the Editor: The Conservative majority passed the oxymoronic “Fair Elections Act”.

It has allowed Harper the first to mouth obfuscations regarding Duffy et al from 37 to 77 days.

He can now outspend all opposition parties combined for another 40 days longer and allow the conservatives and all other parties to send the Canadian taxpayer a bill for 50 per cent of their campaign costs. If you add that to the $75 per $100 political contribution, that is deducted from tax money

needed to run our country, the political parties can no gross up every $100 contributed to $125 – all out of Canadians tax dollars.

To top it off they indiscriminately sent three billion dollars out in retroactive payments to families; rich, super rich, average rich or poor just before the election.

Do you think they were buying votes?

As if that’s not enough of all the political parties – not one, nor the Senate, our group of “sober second thoughts persons” opposed increasing the MP’s and

their costs in this election by almost 10 per cent. Now 338 up from 308.

The USA have capped their Federal Representatives at 409 for 318 million people yet apparently our Canadian politicians need 338 federal political freeloaders for 35 million people.

Are our politicians that inefficient that we need almost eight times more of those witch doctors, or are their (USA) mumbo jumbo shouters that much more efficient?

Remember the tax payer in one way or another, pays

the shot, firstly to elect the little devils then to feed and shelter them for four years.

And as an added bonus the winner gets to “appoint” 105 Senators as opposed to the USA electing 100 Senators, theirs are the best Senators that money can buy, ours are freebie bag men and failed politicians of our political system.

Who makes all those rules that treat the taxpayer as their personal bank card?

Why is it the 338 politicians (or more accurately the Prime Minister and his advisors of any major-

ity government) who get to make their own biased rules. Whole allows this biased corruption? Why is it us, the duped electorate who will have to listen to continuous blather for not just 37 days but now 77 days the “Fair Elections

Act” says so; and the hard part is we have to pay the extra cost to be annoyed for another 40 days.

The Perseid meteor shower was widely talked about on the news.

NASA recommended it as a “must-see�. So, one day at lunch I said to my grandson “Do you want to watch some meteors with me?� After a noncommittal maybe (as only teenagers can do) we made a plan to go outside that evening.

As the clock neared 11 p.m. we made our way into the backyard and looked up at the sky. To say it was clear as a bell would be an understatement. That particular night it was not only clear, it was what could be described as crisp. You could even see the Milky Way. After a while of standing looking up and realizing we would get a crick in our necks, we dragged the lounge

chairs into the middle of the lawn, put the backs down fully and laid down to gaze at the sky. We got under a blanket and spent an hour and a half looking at the sky.

We saw the dippers, lots of aircraft and more than a few meteors. Some were just blips but one had a really nice tail as it passed through; another started on one side of the night sky and made a half arc to the other side (something like a rainbow). All in all it was a memorable way to pass the evening.

The Perseid meteor shower is said to be the best annual shooting star show. This year it peaks between August 13 to 24. As Perseid is the strongest one chances are you will see

more meteors per minute than other meteor showers. Added to that this year is better for viewing than most because there will be no “light pollution� to distract from the fainter meteors.

Some may remember last year in August there was a “supermoon� in the sky. To some degree this outshone the meteor shower. Not so, this year when it is predicted there will be “moonless nights� during Perseid’s annual appearance.

Perseids are fast and bright and streak across the sky leaving trails of light behind them.

At its peak stargazers can count on seeing 50 meteors in an hour. Perseus is the namesake of the Perseids mainly because that is where

the meteors appear to originate. In truth, the real cause of the Perseids is the Earth passing through the trail left by comet Swift-Tuttle.

As the Earth moves through the dust shower, comet particles collide with our atmosphere and burn up, which creates flashes of light visible in the skies of the Northern Hemisphere. The bits and pieces of Swift-Tuttle slam into the Earth’s upper atmosphere at some 210,000 kilometres per hour, that’s 130,000 miles per hour.

It’s really easy to catch a glimpse of the meteor shower. There is no need to purchase a lot of expensive equipment.

Simply find a spot where you can enjoy the night sky (preferably outside an large urban setting as the night sky is darker) and gaze upward. Be patient. It may take a while for your eyes to get accustomed to the dark.

Then, enjoy!

Biggar Lodge News

by Karen Kammer, Recreation Coordinator It is hard to believe that summer is almost over. It just seems like yesterday it was June and the kids were in school.

We had a busy week at Biggar Health Centre with two and sometimes three activities planned during the day. Monday we started with something brand new.

Pastor Mark along with some missionary friend of his were over and started a Bible Study.

Then it was exercises.

Blast from the Past was on at 2:30. Tuesday and Wednesday are always hair day so the residents make sure to do this ďŹ rst thing after breakfast.

Tuesday at 10:30 we read the local papers in Current Events. At 2:30 we had Scategories.

Wednesday morning was T-ball. Some of the residents had good shots and kept hitting at me.

At least I wasn’t hurt too bad. Some residents were able to bat with one hand. After lunch we took a bus load of residents out for a drive around Biggar. We got to see some of their houses in town. Of course the trip isn’t complete till we stop for ice cream at the Quick Stop.

Thursday was Bible Study in the morning.

We learned about Jesus and the Olive Tree. Exercises were at 10:30. At 2:30 we had

out weekly bingo game.

This is the most popular game at the Lodge.

Friday was Barbecue Club down Prairie Scape. We were lucky to eat inside because it was raining out. We had burgers, dogs, vegetables, beans and cake. It was all delicious and not much was left over. We had mini golf in the afternoon.

Saturday was swing bowling and a movie.

Sunday was 1-1 time.

Sonningdale Pentecostal Church came out and did our weekly church service.

We hope everyone has a wonderful day and if you have a few minutes one day we would love to see you.

Mebbe these modern hearing aids are to blame, I dunno, but sometimes Y.T. feels that only some type of Tonsorial contortionist could wrap their vocal chords around some of today’s songs!

We sang because we wanted to sing! Mebbe our voices weren’t so good, but in just doing that seemingly useless thing, it changed our whole lives into ones that were acceptable!

As in everyone else’s life, “Music hath charms to soothe the savage beast!” And that piano sure did a wonderful job!

Y.T. doesn’t think that Shakespeare wrote the above quotation, but it wouldn’t be any more meaningful even if he had!

By example, Mother always insisted that music should be part of everyone’s daily life!

She sang as she worked almost as though she enjoyed both of them!

The life of a farm wife wasn’t that nice during the 1930’s, but Mother sang anyway! And many evenings as she sat, quietly playing her beloved piano, we knew that she was somehow connecting her life to those roses (and promises of roses) that her youth had made!

I think that Mother always wanted us to have music as part of our lives, because it had always meant so much to her – and in a way the music of the 1930’s was what helped us keep our sanity!

agriculture has long intrigued me.

It is an area I have long anticipated will change how farmers farm, although in some respects the impact todate has been less than I would have anticipated had I been asked even a decade ago.

However, I suspect we are now very much on the cusp of some dramatic innovation in terms of robotic farming.

That is not surprising in the sense we have seen robots used in manufacturing for many years now, albeit they grow more sophisticated all the time. They tend to work well in an assembly line atmosphere with repetitive work elements handled by a computer program, whether that is welding spots on an

automobile frame, or carrying out elements of dairy milking parlours.

But, robots are now becoming more advanced, meaning they are no longer restricted to stationary work stations.

Movement of robots is growing exponentially and that is opening up new opportunities to employ the technology.

We see automobiles now able to park themselves. Drivers simply give over control of the car to a computer and in the broadest terms the car becomes robotic.

While questions regarding driver insurance and liability would seem to still be defined, it is not hard to envision a car being able to drive itself down the street to the grocery store, or workplace, with the former driver simply becoming a passenger. It is likely the technology is close, if not already possible.

We have also heard the desire by Amazon.com to turn to flying drones for package delivery.

While that might be more crystal-balling at

this point than a viable option, such drones would need to be highly autonomous in their actions to be useable for such deliveries.

Of course what makes both self-driving cars and delivery drones more reality than science fiction is the element of global positioning technology.

The use of GPS is something farmers are more than a little familiar with as it is a key element of precision farming in terms of spraying and fertilizing to the specific requirements of specific areas of a field.

Moving forward it is going to be GPS in tandem with robotics which has farm machinery crawling across fields monitored by a farmer sitting at a desk at home.

Today we see the ability of a farmer to utilize a driverless tractor pulling a grain cart across a field, its movement controlled by a computer on a combine, keeping the cart on a synchronous path.

The combine itself can actually travel down a field following a swath with little, or no steering from the driver.

The next steps in technology will take operators out of the tractor seat and into a role of monitor, pulling the plug from afar if a problem arises.

With farm employees harder to find based on the increasing tech training they require to operate modern farm equipment, and the costs associated with such labour, robotics machinery is going to find eager tech-adopters among farmers.

The cost saving in terms of labour and the ability of machines to operate longer hours because operator fatigue is eliminated as a limiting factor make the upcoming developments big in terms of farm efficient and bottom line.

The farm may not seem like the most likely place for robots to get an early foothold outside a factory setting, but that is very likely to be the case.

and passed away August 22, 2015 in Biggar, Saskatchewan. Dad was very close to his father after having lost a twin brother in infancy and his mother as a young boy. He learned a lot from his father including his quality carpentry skills. After the war was over in 1945, Dad and his father decided it was time to leave communist Czechoslovakia. It was not an easy task and took several years. Dad told many amazing and interesting stories from this time. Many friends over the years suggested he write down his stories so they wouldn’t be forgotten.

When he finally made his way to Saskatchewan, he settled in the

Biggar-Rosetown area. He was lucky tto know a friend whose w sister w was visiting from m Poland.

The ey hit it off an nd Mom a nd Dad were marw riied in October 1963. b They lived T in n Roseto own for a sh ort time and then made their permanent home in Biggar.

Their daughter, Janet, was born in 1969. In 2001, Dan joined the family as more like a son than a son-in-law. In 2007, their granddaughter, Jilayna, was born. She was the light of her grandpa’s life.

She could bring a smile to his face and make him happier than anyone else could. He was so very proud of her.

Dad spent his years farming south of Biggar.

He also did a lot of carpentry work during the winter months, including designing and building his own houses. He was a talented finishing carpenter with a great attention to detail. He always worked so hard and took pride in all that he did. He could fix anything,

leaving it better than it was before.

He was always available to help a friend or neighbor – anything from fixing something to babysitting.

Dad was excited to take his family back to the Czech Republic to see his homeland in 1999 and again in 2000.

Visiting family and school friends, as well as touring around, was such a highlight for him and his family. Dad decided it was time to retire in 2004. He sold his farm and never looked back. His favourite thing to do during retirement was spending time with his granddaughter.

The past several months Dad had been living in the nursing home in Biggar. His health issues had caught up to him and it was time for him to go. Memories of Dad’s love for his family will fill our hearts. His ability to fill a room with his personality and the way he liked to joke with everyone he met, will continue to put a smile on our faces. We love him and miss him very much.

I swear, this 2015 season for the Saskatchewan Roughriders is like a football movie. You know, like Remember the Titans, Rudy, Any Given Sunday, When The Game Stands Tall and all the rest.

Is it a good movie, a great movie, or a bad one?

I don’t know. You’ve got to watch it to the end to see how it plays out.

The Roughriders are 0-8 following their most recent loss, 34-31 at home to the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday before a sellout crowd of 33,427 at historic Mosaic Stadium.

It was the franchise’s first sellout in almost a year and proof positive that the league’s best fanbase has not given up on its team.

However, let’s be honest, an 0-8 team has never

rallied to make the playoffs in CFL history. That’s not to say it won’t happen, and that’s why you can’t leave the theatre just yet.

And my gosh it’s been a thriller! The games themselves have had your heart racing right down to the final play, for the most part. Last year when the club rattled off seven straight victories, fans complained that the games were too low-scorr ing and boring.

Which would you rather have?

And outside of the games, there have been enough head-scratching situations to fill out a screenplay.

You know the ones. The ones that make you pinch the bridge of your nose between your eyes, shake your head and say, “Did that really just happen?”

Like for instance what happened last Tuesday

U12 District Provincial Showcase was hosted in Regina this past weekend.

District 7 team in Unity and made it through two rounds of cuts to make the team. This team made up of girls from Macklin, Unity, Cut Knife, Meota, Paynton and Biggar have worked very hard these past few

Forget the prior seven weeks.

I looked at radio colour commentator Carm Carteri in bewilderment.

“Is he crying?” I asked.

Our producer confirmed that indeed, Marshay Green had been moved to tears.

Good Lord! That’s a first.

This stuff would have Steven Spielberg drooling. That is, if he were into sports movies.

So miraculously, despite eight consecutive weeks of losing, the Saskatche-

weeks to prepare for this tournament.

We came away with the District Championship!

We are so proud of these girls and their dedication and hard work.

And then during the team’s stretching period, before practice even began, running back Anthony Allen and defensive line coach Mike Sinclair got into a heated spat over something really small. Sinclair reportedly needled Allen about not playing and the player went off. He had to be escorted to the locker room and didn’t return.

So much for the fresh start.

And then on the radio post game show following Saturday’s loss to Calgary, our defensive star Marshay Green - a defensive back who spent four years in the NFL with Arizona and Indianapolis - seemed to be crying during the interview with us.

“I just want to say that I wouldn’t want to be playing for any other coach, any other staff, or go

wan Roughriders are still in the race due to the fact division rivals Winnipeg and B.C. only have three wins each as we approach the halfway turn.

It’s setting up for a ridiculously implausible finish. Who would believe they’d ever make the playoffs, let alone make something happen after that?

Actually it doesn’t matter who does as long as the Green and White believe it can happen.

And they do.

“Nobody’s hanging their head,” Green said between tears. “We still believe in each other. We just have to go back to the drawing board.”

The path to that drawing board has been worn out so far this season but head coach Corey Chamblin continues to tinker and fiddle with his roster which produced generally good results on Saturday except for the final score.

Is it coming? The “whodunit”-style ending?

Maybe.

“Keep chopping,”advised Marshay. “Keep doing everything we’re doing now. Coming to practice, watching film, and getting better in every aspect of the game.”

Pass the Kleenex. This one’s turned into a tearjerker as well.
