The Biggar RCMP had a number of reports of property crime in the rural areas between August 11 and 17.

Several investigations are still ongoing.

“My officers are following up on leads and investigational avenues,” explained Detachment Commander, Sgt. Colin Sawrenko. “I would like to thank the citizens of our local Internet rural crime watch. They continue to provide timely information to our detachment. You are truly making a difference and I’m proud of each of you for stepping up.

We may be a detachment of six police officers but we’re got a community of hundreds assisting us.”

Thieves break into golf course During the early morning hours of August 17, the clubhouse at the Biggar Golf Course was broken into.

The golf course is approximately two kilometres north of Biggar on Highway 4.

Once entry was gained, the culprit rummaged through the clubhouse and made off with a quantity of cash.

Biggar RCMP continue to investigate and have retrieved security footage from the clubhouse. the suspect appears to be a male wearing a grey hoodie, black baseball cap, gloves and a light coloured face covering.

Saskatchewan behind 5-year harvest average Producers in the province now have two per cent of the 2019 crop combined, up from less than one per cent last week, but behind the five-year (2014-2018) average of nine per cent.

Five per cent of the crop is now swathed or ready to straight-cut, which is behind the fiveyear (2014-2018) average of 12 per cent, according to the weekly crop report for August 13 to 19.

Thirty-nine per cent of the fall rye, 23 per cent of the winter wheat, 10 per cent of the field peas, five per cent of the lentils and two per cent of the barley is now stored in bins. An additional two per cent of canola has been swathed.

Harvest progress is most advanced in the southern regions, where three per cent of the crop is now combined. Producers in the central and northern regions have less than one per cent of the crop stored in bins and expect to be harvesting in the coming weeks as crops mature.

Scattered rainfall covered parts of the province this week. Rain-

fall ranged from trace amounts to 27 millimetres in the Shaunavon area. Provincially, topsoil moisture on crop land is rated as one per cent surplus, 75 per cent adequate, 21 per cent short and three per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as one per cent surplus, 67 per cent adequate, 26 per cent short and six per cent very short.

The majority of crop damage this week was from strong winds and a lack of moisture. Some areas of the province reported frost and, although it was reported to be a light frost, some crop damage may have occurred.

Saskatchewan Crop Insurance Corporation (SCIC) would like to remind producers that frost damage takes time to show effects. Once damage is confirmed, please contact your local SCIC office with any questions you may have.

Producers are busy hauling bales, getting ready for harvest, swathing, desiccating and combining crops.

Candidates need to hear your concerns during campaign Biggar’s Main Street has undergone some changes in the past few months. It’s great to see familiar businesses being replaced instead of just being lost.

It is difficult to say what will happen with Main Streets across the province and country with the generation of Baby Boom owners wanting to retire and a lack of upcoming entrepreneurs waiting in the wings to buy. Some of those businesses will simply close and that trend has already started in some areas.

With a federal election coming up maybe this is the time to bring up the future of the business community in small towns. Certainly the implementation of a government department dedicated to rural Canada was a start but there seems to be no action forthcoming.

In a new report, the CFIB claims that payroll taxes are hampering the ability of small businesses to grow. In fact, these taxes are one of the biggest detriments to small businesses according to the group.

In the upcoming weeks there will be many candidates in the area wanting your vote. Now is the time to bring up this issue -- or any other issues you may have.

Stamp lovers collect stamps for the art work “Stamps are little pieces of mass produced art and stamp collectors buy them irrespective of price because they find pleasure in the process of finding and owning them.” Richard Lehmann wrote this for Forbes in 2015 and was obviously an avid stamp collector.

On the other hand Dave Barry has an entirely different viewpoint. “It would be hard to conceive of any activity more useless than stamp collecting.”

A stamp collector, also known as a philatelist, is by definition a person who “loves” stamps.

Each one has their favourites, whether it be a series such as Canadian music legends or flowers or sports. It is amazing

the variety of stamps that are produced by Canada Post.

Some stats: favourite Canadian stamps list gardens at the top followed by duck decoys, and wine and cheese; most relevant stamps: Atlas of Canada, snowbirds and Champlain Surveys the East Coast; least favourite stamps: McClelland and Stewart, Society of Graphic Designers of Canada and birthday; least relevant stamps: Year of the Dog, birthday and wine and cheese. So, there you have it stamp collectors can be a fussy bunch.

existence in 1867. Any stamps that had been issued from any of the colonies previous were no longer valid. As would be guessed the new stamps featured a profile of Queen Victoria ranging in value from 7 cents to 15 cents. Philatelists refer to these stamps as the “large queens”. In 1870 the large queens were replaced by “small queens”. These were basically the same stamp only produced in a smaller size.

Of course, throughout the years a number of stamps were produced.

Some are valuable, some not. When King George VI visited Canada, a group of three stamps were issued to mark the royal visit. During

the war years Canada’s contributions were highlighted on the stamps.

And, in 1946 a peace issue was released.

Some of the stamps are indeed works of art. Canada has issued stamps reflecting the culture of the country. These commemorative stamps have been designed by some very well known artists and depict cultural icons such as well known musicians or sports figures. Or, the stamps may reflect lifestyles of Canadians through their interests and hobbies.

Not everyone will have that “priceless” stamp collection in terms of monetary value but each individual thinks their collection is priceless to them.

Ditches Y.T. Always feels a little bad while thinking or telling about ditches!

Not only does it bother him (as a small time poet) that the word ryhmes with female dog, but because it reminds him of the many times his vehicle has ended up there! (ie) It really wasn’t my fault, mebbe John Pavloff was to blame, (I dunno), but one cold winter night on my way home from a legion, “to do” in Sonningdale, somehow the front wheel of my truck caught in a rut and dragged me off the grade into the deep, snowy ditch alongside it.

Y.T. climbed out and was standing there wondering what to do when a truck pulled up.

“Mr. Mason,” sez a voice. “Whatever are you doing in the ditch?”

I explained: “I had just turned south at Arelee and was driving along carefully, when a whole herd of elephants came running out of the bush and crowded me off the road that’s what!”

Then I added: “When I get home, my wife will never believe what happened!”

“Oh,” sez the voice sympathetically, “but she’ll believe me, because I saw them?”

I shook my head, “Anyone who sees the scene of the crime won’t believe you either,” I sez, “because there are no tracks to show that those animals were here!”

How could there be any tracks? sez Mel. “Those elephants were flying!

Jump in with us and we’ll take you home!”

He pleaded the case to my wife (who didn’t believe him!).

I suppose a fellow could fill a few pages, telling about things like this, but the transportation people might have considered taking my license away!

It always interested me as a boy, that out beside the home pasture was a ditch that always seemed to be full. Dad explained to us that the water table (level) in that part of the Great Bend was only a few feet down in places.

Another one of the local families that lived halfway down the river hills, dug a ditch from an ever-flowing ravine streamlet in order to irrigate their garden.

Pete always had lots of

vegetables from it in the 1930’s too!

We always seemed to need rain, and wanted it, but one time we got a terrible storm that washed a train load of topsoil down the slopes, until there were deep ditches everywhere!

Dad, being a good farmer, (although the Depression took care of that!), just sighed a little when he saw them, but he had three healthy sons, and soon put them to work filling the washouts from our old manure pile.

The crops grew greener there because of all that compost and sweat!

Many years ago, cutting across the countryside of our youth, were many long furrows like ruts (buffalo trails) left by the bison herds as they moved toward the river. And as they got closer to it the trials converged into one deep trench.

Of course the buffalo had disappeared from the prairies long before our time, but the rains of 50 years, funneling down those trails had cut ditches so deep that we couldn’t see out of them.

We were young then, but “progress” came and the shallow roadside ditches dug by horsepulled scrapers disappeared when the big tractor operated elevating graders moved in.

Those deep-ditch high road grade machines sure left a fine looking thoroughfare alright, but when some of the local motor cars ended upside down in those straight walled ditches, elevating graders went out of style.

The sharp cut-banks some of the E.V.’s left, kind of stymied a few coyote chasers too. Ouch!

When the Canadian army got into the lowlands of northern Europe, we found out how ditches should be used by man!

There were thousands of them! Little ones, sometimes only a few yards apart, little shallow depressions that drained into larger ones, which in turn joined up with

larger ones and eventually into a river canal.

Of course their water pumps are all run by electric power now, but in the far past the famous dutch windmills hoisted the canal waters into the diked rivers that emptied into the North Sea. Y.T. personally had to jump across some of those everfilled ditches many times.

And often he Bob Mason didn’t make it!

Later on, as we were moving up to Veen (in Germany), my radio was netted in with the accompanying armoured group. One of their tanks got stuck in a ditch and as another was trying to pull them out, they used their radios for communication, jamming mine so that I couldn’t call off the artillery when some of it fell short (and they wonder why my hair turned a little white before it fell out.)

We had quite a few deep-ditch escapades during our European tour, and often in the L. and T., Y.T. finds little entries like “Glavins Walk”, “Flooded Trenches”, or “Diving into a Ditch”. But we got home safe and sound despite all this stuff, we married the nicest girl in the country and settled down to become a great farmer.

Sorry, we were just about to make a “go” of it when we ran out of dough...

Somehow ditches kept cropping up in Y.T.’s life though and he got a job building some of the Outlook Canals. One thing led to another, and now all he can do is tell his bit about them!

Actually that title, “Ditches” must seem kind of dull to most people (and probably is!) but to older types (like Y.T.) it is “looking back” that counts!

Whether this is ever published or not, he’ll keep scribbling away about things until he falls over!

In memory of the veggie garden While it is obviously not strictly the case, I have always tended to think of rural living when it comes to large vegetable gardens.

That connection might be tied to my own childhood on the farm where memories remain over the thrilling Saturdays spent shelling peas or cutting wax beans for mom to freeze, or the smells associated with pickling time, of the sheer work of carrying a dozen, or more feed bags filled with potatoes from the truck to the root cellar each fall.

My mother did not have off-farm employment which is largely the norm on farms these days, but that in no way is suggesting she did not have a job.

There was a

huge deep-freeze on our porch, and a root cellar below the house, and by the time the snow was starting to make its unwelcome appearance each fall, both were filled with food, enough to get our small family of three through any extended winter, and frankly to feed a small army to boot had it wintered nearby.

There was a garden to tend, chickens to feed, then come fall the produce had to be prepared for winter, the chickens butchered, a pig too actually, and of course there were meals for the field spring and fall, and me to keep at least one eye on. It was a full time job,

not 40-hours a week, but practically dawn-to-dusk for her, and most farm women.

In the days of my youth, the 1960s, vegetable gardens were just a commonplace thing. The one on the farm was huge.

The one my grandparents tended in town was smaller due to lot size, but it Calvin Daniels kept their deepfreeze full, and there was never a time I recall when there weren’t homemade pickles in the basement.

When I started my career as a journalist here in Yorkton three decades ago now, I could have driven most back alleys and found extensive vegetable gardens behind many, if not the majority of houses.

Agriculture

Today that is not the case.

Somewhere in the ensuing years after my arrival in Yorkton things changed. There has been a decline in gardens, or at least that is my perception of it.

Anecdotally, I am told a new generation is interested in growing their own food, but time, in spite of the emergence of electronic time savers galore, seems in evershorter supply.

Food is a supermarket sourced commodity for most of us these days, with that food sourced around the world, preserved, hauled and at our fingertips for a price, we all seem to think is too much when the topic of grocery store costs come up.

Perhaps I am simply waxing poetic after a recent interview with well-known local gardener Glen Tymiak, but it feels like we are less in control of our own existence when we no longer produce as much of our own food as is possible.

The potatoes were the crop from the planter in front of the museum. The Junior Curators, Jayla and Kristen planted the bed in the spring with donated seed potatoes from Carolyn McLean and marigolds donated

by Rita Sutherland.

Jannuela and Tristan Otterson harvested the potatoes from one of the raised beds behind St. Gab’s for the Biggar Green Space Community Garden.

Both harvests went to the Food Bank, sharing the bounty, a good lesson for our young.

New Horizons gearing up for fall activities Jim Reiter, MLA

by Chasity Braitenbach New Horizons has been quiet over the summer but with fall coming,

many of our activities that were on break during the summer will start back up.

There are only a couple events to report on these past couple of weeks.

The first is the Potluck

Birthday Party which occurs on the second Monday of each month for New Horizons members with birthdays in the corresponding month. The birthday potluck on August 12 had an attendance of 24 people.

The half-and-half winner this month was Hilda Dielsen. Happy birthdays to Barb Archibald, Wilfred Bender, Rita Cleaveley, Ruby Evanisky, Marlene Flasch, Elva Franklin, Sheila Itterman, Edith McKee, Chris Mordhorst, Wayne McLean, Margaret Sapsford and Brian Shuttle.

On August 22 we had bingo with an attendance of 15 people. The winner of the half-and-half game was Joanne Kral and the winner of the blackout game was Margaret Irven.

Long-Term Care receives classic Star Weekly prints . . . Marge and Ron Crozier show off old prints from the iconic Star Weekly magazine - a Canadian version of Life magazine. The mounted prints, often by Canadian Group of Seven artists, were collected by Marge over the course of many years, the magazine finally winding up publication in 1973. The Crozier’s are loaning the prints to the long-term care home so residents can enjoy the beautifully preserved prints.

OBITUARIES DONALD DAVID BALDWIN Donald was born in Perdue, Saskatchewan in 1943.

He died in Bisley, England on June 30, 2019.

Don attended various schools in Saskatchewan as his Dad moved around in his job as a grain buyer. Tragedy struck when his mother died in the 1952 polio epidemic leaving his Dad to raise four young boys.

His father remarried and two more boys and two girls joined the family.

Upon completing High School, he enrolled in the Royal Navy Officer Training Programme, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan. After leaving the Navy, he worked for the City of Saskatoon Electrical Department before moving to Edmonton and beginning his career in the oil industry with Mobil Oil. His first move with Mobil was to Halifax as a Drilling Engineer Supervisor. Offshore Drilling was just getting started in Nova Scotia and he was excited to play a part. From there, he went overseas to The Netherlands for six years which provided an opportunity for travel throughout Europe and further afield to Russia, Kenya, Egypt and Dubai.

Following this, he worked for a couple of years in New Orleans, before settling in the United Kingdom. From here, he continued to do offshore work in Indonesia, Nigeria and Vietnam. He particularly loved Vietnam and made good friends there that he kept in contact with. It was not uncommon at Christmas to see a big van pull up outside the house full of Vietnamese visitors looking for Mr. Don. Don was predeceased by his mother, Mary, father Ernie, stepmother Adeline, elder brothers Lorne and Lloyd, twin brother Dale and sister-in-law Lis . He leaves to mourn, his wife Linda (Loukota), younger brothers Barry and Dennis, sisters Elfrida and Leona and a number of nieces and nephews.

His interests included reading and spending hours on his computer. He loved animals and over the years received great joy from his basset hounds, first Barney and then Sebastian.

At his request, there will be no funeral.
