To the driver of the Biggar Fire Department fire truck who passed us on Sunday, August 18 (no lights and no siren): Passing on a DOUBLE SOLID LINE is illegal. Not only is it illegal it is extremely dangerous. It was irresponsible because not only did you put the lives of your fellow fire crew in danger you put the lives of innocent people in danger. Thankfully there was no oncoming traffic at the time or the consequences could have been disastrous.

According to Tyler McMurchy, Mamager of Media Relations, SGI: “Generally speaking, all vehicles -- including emergency vehicles -- should not cross solid or double solid yellow lines in order to pass other vehicles. While the ordinary rules of the road are suspended when an emergency vehicle is responding to an emergency, the flashing lights should be activated to alert other motorists to pull to the right and let the emergency vehicle pass.”

To Biggar Town Council: Do you condone this driving behaviour? The public deserves a response.

There are many who will remember 1969 and the events of that summer.

Books Sometime in the past Y.T. has written quite a few pieces about books and how they affect us.

There is sure enough to know about them, and he could have written a lot more.

When we were children, books were often a big part of every winter. In her youth, Mother had been a school teacher, as had our grandfather and the small library in the front room was crammed with books they had chosen. One of my finest memories of those days is recalling tall, slim old Dad (though he was young then) sitting by the heat register in our “den” reading a volume of Shakespeare.

Hark, hark! The lark at heaven’s gate sings, And Phoebus ‘gins arise.

His steeds to water at those springs, On chaliced flower that lies.

And winking Mary buds begin, To open their golden eyes.

With everything that pretty is, My lady sweet arise.

Mebbe times have changed a lot since then but I think our thirst for knowledge and romanticism hasn’t. The young people almost seem to stare as they watch T.F. yet deep inside (whether they know it or not) they are still trying to find something out. Actually not a whole lot different than the often mentioned, self made, studious types of long ago.

Y.T. has often been looked on by some as a person who likes to write (and I suppose that is partly true) but he also likes to read, especially a piece that he understands. When he picks up a bit by Mr. Chaucer it often goes like this: The Pardoner had heer as yellow as wax.

But smooth it beenge as doth a strike of flax.

By ounces heeng his lookes that he had.

And terwith he his shoulders overspradde.

Or mebbe this, by Mr. Spenser.

The morrow next, so soon as Phoebus Lamp.

Bewrayed had the world with early light.

I suppose to the people of Chaucer and Spenser’s time, the pages and pages of The Pardoner’s Tale and the Faerie Queen meant quite a bit, but to many of us they

don’t appeal at all.

Being a rural type with a rural vocabulary, The Shooting of Dan McGrew is more like it.

And hunger, not of the belly kind.

Banished by bacon and beans.

But the gnawing hunger of lonely men.

For ahome and all that it means.

But it bothers me that this type of poem has gone out of style. Mebbe some of the modern stuff has a genuine message for younger people, but it sure doesn’t have one for me.

Another great attraction of books, I think, is that most of them point out the ultimate benefits of being good. To me it seems that in the past, far, far too many of them have suggested that wealth was life’s supreme goal.

For thousands of years the down side of the love of weatlh has been pointed out many times. No one knows exactly who first said that it was the root of all evil -- probably some ancient ancestor of Y.T. We’ve all read about King Midas and his magic touch (which he really enjoyed until dinner time) but usually these wealthy types make the news.

How about this one?

A young millionaire from out west, Had oodles of dough to invest.

He spent most of it on

wine, women and song.

They say he wasted the rest.

Books used to portray the idea that we could best survive by just being ourselves.

A loaf of brea, a jug of wine and thou.

Sorry. Many of them don’t explain things that way anymore.

Mebbe the excesses of Hollywood are to blame for this switch of values, I Bob Mason dunno.

But presently it seems that the high type of life is what the ordinary reader wants.

And if given a chance even, a lot of us hesitate to read the dull essays of Adam Smith and Co. anymore. Most os us feel that world economy is way out of our hands anyway.

Way back there somewhere Y.T. mentioned what he call the “now” generation in which many aren’t content with working toward an eventual success. The modern outlook seems to be that we want things right now. New homes, new cars, new experiences new everything.

And, I feel, the only way many of us will succeed in these ambitions is by picking up a book.

if our thousands of TVs tell the same stories (ie) Instead of some Hollywood idol being the hero or heroine, we can always imagine ourselves.

Even our knowledge once crammed into the books of the world is available now to anyone who can manipulate a mouse.

Lying around here somewhere, is a long list of past writers who ended up on skid row. All of us think of great authors as being special people. Sorry.

Most of them are just ordinary types who feel they must write about some extraordinary experience. They actually personal feeling that goes into a book is what makes it worth reading.

A lot of folks will find Y.T.’s point of view fairly controversial (boy there’s a big word). But darn it all in our democracy we are all allowed to have an opinion.

I sure hope not, but mebbe The Independent people will cut me off for scribbling the way I do.

But then even that would kind of prove my point.

When it comes to genetics a lot can be accomplished through selective breeding and a knowledge of what is trying to be accomplished.

You need to look no further than the significant differences among breeds of fancy pigeons, cats and dogs, to see what can be accomplished, albeit the process is not necessarily a quick one.

So it wasn’t exactly a surprise when I read about the possibility of breeding cattle to produce less methane.

According to a recent article in the Western Producer, scientists at the University of Adelaide in Australia, in collaboration with universities in Europe, Israel and the United States, have conducted research that has shown it is possible to breed cattle to reduce their methane emissions.

The genetic makeup of an individual cow significantly controls the level and type of methaneproducing microbes in

its rumen.

One has to applaud the approach as being one that addresses a source of greenhouse emissions in a reasonable fashion.

But, we also shouldn’t be pointing to accusing a finger at cattle as the problem when it comes to greenhouse gases.

When European Calvin Daniels settlers arrived in North America there were massive herds of bison roaming the Prairies, the herds numbering an estimated at 30-60 million in the late 18th century, depending on the source, and of course no one was taking head counts. But, around the world there were once far more wild ruminants producing methane than there are today.

Domestic cattle herds have taken over as wild populations of bison, wildebeest and other wild ruminants around the

world declined in numbers.

That is not to suggest we shouldn’t look to ways of reducing the methane domestic cattle produce, and the two most logical approaches would be to find genetic lines which naturally produce less of the gas, and to work on feed formulations which would reduce less gas when consumed.

Certainly greenhouse gas emissions from every source need to be looked at.

While there are those who see climate change as no more than a horror story being told to keep people focused on it rather than other ills of the world, and others who suggest the changes are just the natural processes of the planet at work, it seems folly not to work on limiting the human dynamic of the equation.

There might be an added cost to raising cattle which produce less methane gas, but there is also value in slowing climate change that could turn currently arable land into unproductive areas which in terms of feeding a still growing world population is not a good thing.

Premier Moe announces Cabinet changes August 13, Premier Scott Moe announced changes to his cabinet.

Three cabinet ministers change portfolios: Lori Carr becomes Minister of Government Relations, Minister Responsible for First Nations, MĂŠtis and Northern Affairs, and Minister Responsible for the Provincial Capital Commission.

Carr previously served as Minister of Highways and Infrastructure.

Greg Ottenbreit becomes Minister of Highways and Infrastructure, and Minister Responsible for the Water Security Agency.

Ottenbreit previously served as Minister Responsible for Rural and Remote Health.

Warren Kaeding becomes Minister Responsible for Rural and Remote

Health. Kaeding also becomes Minister Responsible for Seniors, a new cabinet responsibility that ensures Saskatchewan seniors have a dedicated voice at the cabinet table.

Shall we go on an adventure?! . . . The Biggar Associated Gospel Church was a busy place last week as young adventurers embarked on a quest to strengthen their relationship with God. The G-Force Adventure program hit the church August 12-16, giv-

Asquith residents should report suspicious criminal activity to RCMP Asquith Town Council held its August regular council meeting on August 14.

Attending were Mayor Gail Erhard, Councillors Dylan Claypool, Sue Sawicki, Harold Edwards, and Ted Goodnough. Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft. The meeting was called to order at 7 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the July 10 regular meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the July 2019 financial and bank rec-

onciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts paid in the amount of $93,479.14 and accounts payable of $75,247.09 were accepted as presented.

Partial paving of Lunn Street will commence this summer/fall and the paving of Railway Avenue will be starting soon, along with patching/ repairing other streets in town.

Council would like to remind all residents that if you see something that is a crime or looks criminal to call the RCMP at 306-975-1670. If you see

individuals driving dangerously, speeding, or if you see something that just doesn’t look right, please call the RCMP. It does not do any good to come into the Town Office the next day to report it to office staff. It is extremely important that the RCMP have a handle of how much crime, no matter how petty, is occurring in town.

A reminder goes out to all individuals that the Town of Asquith has A Burning Bylaw which dictates that one can have a fire in town for

recreational use only.

Only clean wood/firewood can be burned in your fire pits -- no painted/treated wood, refuse, leaves, etc. should be burned. Be kind to your neighbour and to the environment and burn only clean wood materials. Also, no bonfires are allowed -- please keep the size of your backyard fires moderate.

Summer is winding down, children are going back to school and soon autumn will be upon us.
