Harvest begins for some areas of the province Harvest operations have already begun in some parts of the province, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report, according to the weekly crop report for July 30 to August 5.

As crops continue to mature in the next few weeks, most producers will begin to harvest.

Some crops are oneto-two weeks behind in development and this may be of concern depending on weather during harvest.

Scattered rainfall covered parts of the province this week with some storms bringing hail.

The moisture has helped later-seeded crops fill and replenish topsoil moisture. Rainfall ranged from trace amounts to 94 millimetres in the Porcupine Plain area.

Provincially, topsoil moisture on cropland is rated as one per cent surplus, 60 per cent adequate, 36 per cent short

and three per cent very short. Topsoil moisture on hay land and pasture is rated as one per cent surplus, 48 per cent adequate, 41 per cent short and 10 per cent very short.

Across the province, pasture conditions are rated as four per cent excellent, 28 per cent good, 45 per cent fair, 19 per cent poor and four per cent very poor.

Additional rainfall would be beneficial for the pastures as they mature before harvest.

The majority of crop damage this week was from strong winds, hail, localized flooding, insects and a lack of moisture. There are reports of ascochyta blight causing significant damage in chickpea crops in the southern regions.

Producers are haying, hauling bales and getting ready for harvest.

Biggar players figure in Provincial ball win . . .

The Rosetown Angels were recently crowned Provincial champs this past weekend, and figuring in the team’s championship drive were some local players, Brock and Tyrus Thomson, Adam Johb and Emmett Keith. The Angels were in Davidson starting the weekend with a win versus the North East Red Sox, 8-6, followed up with a 12-1 loss to the Central Sask Cannons. Angels turned it around in the third game

versus the Meadow Lake White Sox, 8-3, putting them in a tiebreaker game against the North East Red Sox where they won 6-5. The gold medal game against Central Sask Cannons went the Angels way, 4-1 for the provincial championship. Council resolved that applications to install signs in the Urban Sign Corridor for D & E Transport and Red Apple Store were both approved as presented.

Council resolved that Council instruct Administration to enter into an agreement with the Minister of Health, acting through the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Biggar Fire Department for the maintaining of a National Emergency Strategic Stockpile (NESS).

Any messages will come through loud and clear on election day The billboard reads: “Send Trudeau a message, Vote out Ralph Goodale” The campaign called WestWatch started in Regina by Canada Growth Council in an effort to oust Saskatchewan’s lone Liberal MP. However, it wasn’t long before similar billboards appeared in Alberta and now has expanded to other provinces in Western Canada and maybe even into Ontario.

Of course, Goodale denounces the message saying he has stood up for Western Canada and claims the message is not based on fact.

However, one only has to look at the Western economy, most notably the downturn in oil to see the effect some of the Liberal policies have had.

Voters who live in those communities see first hand what has happened recently.

It is true Western alienation is at an all time high. The polls and surveys bear witness to that fact.

Of course, there is only one poll that counts -and that’s the one that takes place on election day.

That’s when Canadians take matters into their own hands and send whatever message they choose to send to the government.

Hudson’s Bay blankets a part of Canadian heritage It seems another iconic Canadian retailer, the Hudson’s Bay Company, is in trouble. The company has a long history in the country dating back to the 1700s, even before Canada was officially born.

The company has become part of our history and in many ways, our culture. The famous Hudson’s Bay Point Blanket was used in the early days of fur trading.

At that time the blanket was one of the most popular trade items.

It was an independent fur trader, Germain Maugenest, who proposed the idea to the board at Hudson’s Bay House in London. Maugenest suggested the company should stock

and trade “pointed” blankets. This would increase the inland fur trade from Fort Albany along the west coast of James Bay. The first order was placed in December 1779 for 500 pairs of “pointed” blankets: 100 pairs each in 1-, 1.5-, 2-, 2,5-, and 3-point sizes. The first shipment reached Fort Albany that spring and were then dispersed to posts regularly.

The “point” system was an invention of French weavers which indicated the overall size of the blanket. The word “point” comes from the French word “empointer” which means “to make threaded stitches on cloth”.

factured in plain white with red, green and blue stripes and single headings in black (often referred to as indigo). It wasn’t until much later that other colours were added to the blankets: multi-coloured stripes; special editions for Canadian anniversaries and events.

The blankets were considered high quality. They were originally manufactured in Witney, Oxfordshire but heavy demand forced the company to seek out suppliers in Yorkshire as well.

The wool is a blend of varieties from Britain and New Zealand which are selected for the qualities that make the blankets water resistant, soft,

warm and strong.

The blankets were so warm that many of them were made into coats which were warm enough for Canadian winters. The first coat was a “capote” which is a wrap style coat. These coats were worn by First Nations, Metis, French settlers, traders, trappers and even British settlers.

The company hired tailors to make the coats.

These tailors could be found at posts throughout the country. The wrap style was easy to move about in and were convenient for hunting.

Some were constructed with hoods, others had fringes and some had sashes. Even then people were fashion conscious.

shouldn’t think or write about things like this too often, because after all they did happen over 60 years ago and times have changed.

A lot of the “glorious” stuff should be forgotten anyway.

There are a few things that have always bothered me though, and one of them is that way back there somewhere before the whole miserable WWII started, someone (mebbe all of us) should have done something to keep it from happening. The feeling that Y.T. and thousands of others like him, didn’t do enough has always been with me.

Also, at 100-some years old, he often feels a bit of remorse that those who lost their lives back then counted on him to write these things.

The big regimental history book Black Yesterdays, The Argyll’s WAr that I got from Colin Wallis is wide open on the desk in front of me, and on page 397 is the content of a letter Mrs. Robertson got from the Director of Records April 1945: “ . . . the following information has been received of your son’s unit in the field, B148159, Sergeant John Stewart Robertson was last seen by a soldier

of his platoon at about 2:30 p.m. March 7, 1945.

Sergeant Robertson was in the lead section of his Company, which was attacking an enemy-held town and were forced to withdraw.

Contact was lost with the lead section, and never regained. Nothing more has been seen of any member of his section since that time.”

Also on my desk is one ringbinder of the old L & T (Life and Times) and an entry on Page 244.

“Not many minutes before Pippus, L108617, got hit, we were moving along in spread out formation when we passed through a bunch of guys who were lying down facing toward Veen. I remember mumbling to one of them as we passed. It was barely morning and because he didn’t reply, I stooped down and saw that he was asleep. I couldn’t see anyone sleeping in that kind of situation so I reached out and shook him a bit -- he was still warm, but he was dead ...“ What a waste of people.

Y.T. has mulled over, read and reread that big history book for years, always wondering what

he would have done had he faced the same circumstance, and always come to the same conclusion that he would have done the same thing.

It could have happened many years before, but it didn’t, and by the time we attacked Veen it was way too late (I think) to jump up as a group and yell: “Okay Fritz, let’s put our weapons away and have a cup of coffee, eh?”

Mebbe they did do that (I dunno) but I do know that later the same day, as Y.T. escorted a whole bunch of enemy

POWs back past that same group of dead men, many of them frowned when they saw what they had don, and wondered (as Y.T. has wondered for many years) how “man” could do such terrible things to his fellow man.

And, (as a kind of side note) were those bodies lying there facing toward Veen part of the “lost” platoon of B company?

Who can tell? Certainly not their comrades still alive, who were taken prisoner and sent back across the Rhine.

Later, burial parties would gather them up and record their dog tags: “Stewart, Smith, Anderson, Carter, Forfar, Madair, Vaise and Black.

The Padre, Captain Charlie Maclean would read over them and their names would be added to the Casualty List. “Mon Dieu Quelle vache de guerre!”

When we walked into Veen behind a creeping barrage (my ears still ring) it almost seemed a cinch. Had we arrived just a little too late to be one of those guys lying there?

Sometimes I wonder.

After all these years, the memory of those guys lying there, still reminds me that something should have been done long, long before.

So Y.T. continues to write and write.

Do we personally have to walk among a group of dead young people before we realize that somehow it all could have been prevented?

Y.T. is no teacher by a long shot but the lesson he learned as he walked past those men lying there (and wants to pass on) is that somehow, something way back there is our evaluation of things, wasn’t done right.

According to Jim Krueger, hindsight is always so- so. But that doesn’t take away from the fact

that peaceful moves are possible.

And in the light of that 20-20 vision, all through the ages every disagreement cold have had a peaceful solution, except that someone (possible our own society) didn’t do the correct thing.

We blame others for teaching violence, and yet most of us see violence every time we turn on the TV. And often, I think, it isn’t aggression that causes violence so much as our own TV presented values.

In the many years since we strolled into Veen (and saw those fellows lying there) Y.T. has often wondered what our real goals in life are anymore. Millions of us go to church on Sunday (one day a week) and for those 24 hours, we really want peace on earth and good will toward man.

But for the other six days, I’m afraid that a lot of us still work for Mammon.

I’ll bet that million of us have never even heard of Mammon.

Harvest upon us You can almost feel the anticipation in the air.

It is the time of year when grain and oilseed producers begin to become rather antsy for the start of the fall harvest.

Recent road trips to

Sandy Beach on Good Spirit Lake for a disc golf tournament, and a run to Regina for East Indian food, was a good opportunity to take note of the state of crops.

While there were no swathers in the fields, a

The trips were 10-days ago from when this article will see print, and some of the crops are likely going down, marking the start of harvest.

It is always a time that excites farmers, the point when they feel they will be able to harvest the crop and see a return on what is now a substantial investment in every acre planted.

It is also a time, as I recall from my youth, a time of uncertainty for producers. No one can be sure of what sort of production a field might yield on a given year until the combine begins its work.

and of course the input of fertilizer and the control of weeds which compete with crops.

Most of the stands this year, at least on the highways travelled recently, look good although as always they are variable too. Some crops don’t look very tall, which from an SUV seat at 100 kilometres an hour doesn’t mean a lot, but

one wonders if the crop perhaps needed an extra rain or two. Or, it might just be the variety, and a great yield awaits harvest.

ers will be shooting for on a quarter-to-quarter basis in terms of gross return.

Of course while the wheels will be starting to turn, and that is always good news when harvest gets a good start in August, there are still weeks of work ahead, and Mother Nature can throw a wrench into the gears with rain and frost yet.

But at present farmers will just be happy to be out in the field reaping what they have sown, which is the heart of their business, meaning driving the combine is often when producers are happiest.

Summertime Fruit Salsas In my last column about strawberries, I prompted you to try making a strawberry salsa and gave you some direction on how to go about doing so. Fruit salsas are so fresh and delicious, and a perfect way to compliment the summer grilling season. So much so, that I am giving you two more fruit salsa recipes to help bring excitement to your next backyard grilling adventure.

1 medium yellow bell pepper diced small 1/2 jalapeno, minced – seeds & membrane removed for a milder salsa 1/4 cup small diced red onion 2 – 4 tbsp finely chopped fresh mint Zest from 1 lime, finely chopped 2 tbsp lime juice 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp fresh cracked black pepper 1/4 tsp salt 1.5 (one and one half) cups fresh blueberries

Mix all of the ingredients together, except for the blueberries.

Gently toss in the fresh blueberries into the salsa ingredients and serve immediately.

Summer activities at New Horizons keeps members busy

by Chasity Braitenbach We have a bit of catching up to do since the newspaper was on holidays. There have been a number of events over the past month or so that have kept us busy up at New Horizons.

At Monday afternoon Kaiser on June 24, we had two tables of players. In first place was Pat Turner with 274 points, in second was Marie Roesch with 215 points, in third was Isla Solanik with 192 points and in fourth was Linda Vermette with 189 points.

The highest scoring game was played by Pat and Isla with a score of 59 points.

At bingo on June 27 we had nine players.

The winner of the half and half game was Rita Cleaveley and the blackout game winner was Linda Vermette. The bingo on July 11 was a bit busier with 14 players

in attendance. The half and half game on this day was won by Marie Roesch and the blackout game was won by Vera Halter. At bingo on July 25 we had seven players.

The half and half game was won by Moe Goring and the blackout game was won by Marg Irven.

On August 8 we had 12 players. The winner of the half and half game was played by Gail Herzberg and the winner of the blackout game was Linda Vermette.

Just a reminder that the more players we have, the bigger the payout for each game, so don’t be shy.

On July 5, Carmen from Pharmasave came down to New Horizons and gave a health presentation once again. The topics covered at the presentation were sun safety and sleep.

At the July 14 Birthday Potluck we had 30 in

attendance. The entertainment for the day was put on by Joanne Kral and Caledonia Donahue after there was a cancellation in the entertainment that was scheduled.

Joanne did a bit of a comedy routine and read funny stories and jokes and then Caledonia performed a number of songs. The winner of the half and half draw this month was Vera McNeil.

As always the food was amazing.

Evelyn Joan (Pedrotti) Potter October 8, 1926 - July 25, 2019

Duperow Co-op

Evelyn was born on October 8, 1926 on a dairy farm near Guernsey, y, Saskatchewan.

In 1946 she mar-ried Douglas H Potter and together they worked Doug’s grandparents’ homestead south of Biggar.

They were married for 69 years and raised three children.

Evelyn was an active partner on the farm and participated in community affairs and politics. She was a member of the local School Board and a Director of the local Co-op Association.

She served as a Director of Biggar and District Credit Union for six years. From 1993 to 2002 she was a Director, Vice President, and President of Biggar Museum and Gallery contributing 2000 volunteer hours.

Together the Potters joined the Saskatchewan Farmer’s Union where Evelyn quickly assumed a leadership role. First, she became District Women’s Director, then Women’s Vice President and finally Women’s President of the SFU. In 1969 she was elected the first Women’s President of the National Farmer’s Union (NFU) and held the position for five years.

In 1971 she was part of Canada’s first cultural exchange delegation invited to the People’s Republic of China. She represented the NFU internationally with Associated Country Women of the World (ACWW) and led delegations of Canadian farm women to conferences in Michigan, USA; Perth, Australia; Cuba and South America. In 1976 her work promoting local growers resulted in the NFU’s publication “Nature Feeds Us” of which she was very proud. It broke new ground in what is now known as the food sovereignty movement.

Evelyn served on the

Canada Council for Rural Development, the C Canadian Environmental Advisory Council and the Canadian Occupational H Health and S Safety Council. She was a strong advoc for womcate en’s rights and was instrumental in convincing the Saskatchewan legislature to pass the Matrimonial Property Rights ACT of 1980.

Evelyn was inducted into the Saskatchewan Agricultural Hall of Fame in 2011. She helped lay the foundation for equity of women in farm organizations, rural communities and the nation as a whole.

She worked to build understanding across social, economic and political divides. Evelyn inspired and influenced many and will be deeply missed by her family; son Leslie Potter (Lorna Donlevy) granddaughter Danielle Potter (Michael Labbie) daughter Donna Potter grandson Michael Smith daughter Karen Potter (Merv Bilinski) grandson Shayne Lazarowich (Cindy Zavala) granddaughter Karla Duchesne (Rob Duchesne) great grandsons Hudson and Jacob, brother Jim Pedrotti, numerous nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours.

At Evelyn’s request there will be no funeral service.

There will be a “Celebration of Her Life” in conjunction with an Exhibition Closing Reception “China Through Saskatchewan Eyes- Evelyn Potter’s 1971 Journey” at the Biggar Museum and Gallery on Saturday, August 24 from 1pm to 5pm.

The origins of line dancing When attending a country hoedown, one is bound to encounter line dancing. Line dancing is popular in honkey tonks, bars, church basements, and just about anywhere folks are gathering for a good time.

The history of line dancing is extensive, though there is debate as to its origins. According to the Grizzly Rose club in Colorado, some believe that country line dancing can be traced back to the round and square dances of Europe.

Others say it originated with 19th century social settlement movement folk dancing. Settlers of towns had their own songs and sounds that evolved into modern country music. In turn, dances were modified to go along with the tunes. Contra dancing, which is a form of American folk dance in which the dancers form two parallel lines and perform a sequence of dance movements with different partners down the length of the line, likely played a hand in the evolution of country line dancing as well.

As its name suggests, line dancing involves people dancing in lines to music. The dances are choreographed with a repeating series of steps that are per-

formed in unison. Dancers all face the same direction, although there may be multiple lines. Dance Poise also says that there is almost no physical contact between dancers, unlike other country western dances, though handholding may occur.

Country line dances are made up of various steps to a number of counts, which coordinate to the beat.

They often feature catchy names, such as â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Texas Two-Step,â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;The West Coast Shuffleâ&#x20AC;? and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Boot Scootinâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Boogie.â&#x20AC;?

Some find line dancing so appealing because it does not require a partner, making it ideal for singles, couples or those who feel they arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the strongest dancers.

Line dances are not limited to country music. Popular music has given rise to many different line dances, including the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Charlie Brown,â&#x20AC;? the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Macarenaâ&#x20AC;? and the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cha-Cha Slide,â&#x20AC;? among others.

Line dancing can make for an entertaining night out with friends who share a love of country music.
