New Biggar Group Home opens Biggar Prairie Branches christened their new building on Sixth Avenue East, July 30, marking the occasion with fanfare that met the anticipation of the long-awaited facility.

Biggar-Sask Valley MLA Randy Weekes, on behalf of Premier Scott Moe and Social Services Minister Paul Merriman, joined community members, dignitaries and group home residents to celebrate the new replacement group home.

The group home will be home to five people with intellectual disabilities.

The provincial government contributed more than $1 million to the project.

“Prairie Branches Enterprises continues to do remarkable work supporting people with intellectual disabilities in Saskatchewan,” Weekes said. “The Government of Saskatchewan appreciates the support community-based organizations provide to create more inclusive

communities.”

Prairie Branches receives more than $3 million annually from the Ministry of Social Services as of the 2018-19 fiscal year. They currently support 35 people in group homes, seven in supported living, and 29 vocationally in the communities of Biggar, Wilkie and Unity.

This project has been a long-time dream for this agency in Biggar,” Executive Director of Prairie Branches, Eunice Washkowsky explained.

“We are very excited to be able to continue to support these wonderful people in this new accessible home. Their quality of life will be greatly enhanced by this new home, which is the most important thing that we can provide to these individuals. It is a beautiful addition to our agency and will be truly life changing.”

Human remains discovered near Biggar, Sask

Country music duo: Randy and Rai at Biggar Majestic this Sunday Husband and wife duo, Randy and Rai Smith will bring ‘classic country music’ to the Biggar Majestic Theatre, this Sunday, August 12.

The duo deliver a music style second to none, along with an ability to tell a story that, for the most part, are all true!

Randy, born and raised in Alberta, is carrying on the family tradition as a country entertainer. His paternal grandparents band, Allan Smith and the Serendars, were popular around Central Alberta.

His father Glenn, also sang and played guitar with the family band and as a result, Randy has been singing since age 5.

Randy began his career as a solo act in Southern Alberta before becoming the lead singer for a country/rock band Wild Frontier, and then later forming a band with his brother, The Alamo. In 1997 he decided to take some time off from the road to focus more on new material, co-writing with the likes of Kenny Hess, Tony Rudner and the late Mike Norman.

On July 24, Biggar RCMP received reports of possible human remains found in a rural area outside of Biggar.

With assistance and equipment from the local fire department, the remains were recovered. A forensic anthropologist examined them and confirmed that the partial remains located are human.

Investigators are working to determine the identity of the remains.

Biggar RCMP continue to investigate with assistance from RCMP Historical Crimes Unit North and the Coroner’s Office.

Saskatchewan becoming the place to visit According to Stats Canada numbers Saskatchewan is experiencing an increase in tourism activity.

Visits to the province and visits made by residents of the province have increased 9.4 per cent from 2016. The overall growth rate for the country was 2.1 per cent which means Saskatchewan is ahead of other areas.

What is even more impressive is the dollars that are being spent on tourism. Canadian visitors, which include Saskatchewan residents who are travelling within the province, spent $1.88 billion in 2017.

Not bad.

It is true that Saskatchewan is Canada’s best kept secret. Those of us who live here know what there is to do and see during the summer months. It is no secret that our lakes are one of our greatest treasures. But, there are lots of other activities and attractions around the province to keep visitors entertained.

Tourism will continue to increase. As will the dollars that will be spent.

This is and can be an economic driver for any community. There is always room for new development.

Perhaps it is time for Biggar to consider the possibilities that exist within our community. And, how we can capitalize on this upswing in tourism.

Time to get serious about interprovincial electricity trade

by Nick Martin, Policy Analyst Canada West Foundation With cross-border clashes on issues, ranging from pipelines, to booze, to out-of-province licence plates, the provinces have room for improvement when it comes to working together.

It’s no different when it comes to electricity.

While restrictions on bringing some beer across provincial borders (as in the recent Comeau case in the Supreme Court) can be inconvenient, barriers to interprovincial electricity trade can have costly implications for Canada’s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Enabling more electricity trade between provinces can go a long way in helping Canada reduce emissions cost-effectively, but challenges remain.

Canada’s electricity system is composed of largely isolated provincial grids. Relatively little electricity flows over provincial borders, and what electricity does leave a province is usually headed to the U.S.—sometimes for very cheap prices.

This has worked well enough in the past. Most provinces have been able to supply their own electricity cheaply and reliably. Today, Canada enjoys some of the cheapest electricity among

OECD countries—and 80 per cent of it comes from emission-free sources.

There has been no significant need to trade electricity between provinces.

The future may not be as simple.

If Canada wants to reduce its emissions, it will need to make its energy system even cleaner. This will mean electrifying traditionally fuel-consuming services such as transportation while also building an electricity system with the ability to power more things.

Where will Canada find more clean electricity to power this energy future?

It could tap more of its hydroelectricity potential or build more nuclear generation—both of which provide the majority of Canada’s existing clean electricity. Renewable sources like wind, solar and geothermal may also play a role. All are becoming increasingly cheaper and technically feasible, and each will be necessary to meet our demand for clean electricity.

However, these sources are location dependent—they are best built where it’s most windy or sunny or where the geology is favourable. For this reason, the best renewable resources may be far from where the electricity needs to go.

For example, Alberta has some of

the lack of interprovincial electricity system planning.

What needs to be done?

First, the provinces need to take this issue seriously. Electricity generation is largely under provincial jurisdiction, so nothing will happen if the provinces don’t want it. If done right, improved electricity trade will benefit all provinces involved by lowering costs while helping the country achieve its climate goals. Electricity trade should not become enmeshed in unrelated provincial disputes.

The federal government has an important leadership role to play. It can provide incentives for provinces to come to the table and remove unnecessary barriers to electricity trade. Federal agencies such as the Canada Infrastructure Bank are wellsuited to help fund the infrastructure needed to enable electricity flows between provinces—especially where it will lead to greenhouse gas reductions.

But funding needs to be tied to real commitments by the provinces to address electricity trade barriers.

It’s time to show that the provinces can still come together to address a common challenge. Let’s lead the way by improving electricity trade to combat climate change.

the best wind resources in Canada and is quickly building a lot of wind generation, but eventually it could find it has more wind power than it can feasibly consume during windy times.

This will lead to curtailment and clean electricity being wasted if it can’t be sent to a neighbouring jurisdiction.

This is why it will become more important for the provinces to work together. Improved electricity trade between provinces will enable the cost-effective integration of new renewable electricity. Provinces will be able to develop their best renewable resources, whether it’s geothermal in British Columbia or wind off the coast of Nova Scotia, and send that electricity to where it is needed—even if it’s across a provincial boundary.

Canada’s existing hydroelectric production—mostly concentrated in a handful of provinces—can help balance uncontrollable sources such as wind and solar.

More integrated electricity trade will require more infrastructure (e.g. transmission lines) to enable electricity to flow between provinces. It will also require provinces to address non-infrastructure related challenges such as rules that give preference to provincial electricity providers and

Farmers are friends at the local markets

they want to buy fresh, in-season produce. The average customer supports farmers’ markets because of a strong desire to shop in the community.

The vendors are what is termed as “primary producers� and a significant portion of their income is derived from selling their goods at the market. This is one way to generate farm income and market Canadian agricultural products.

Let’s take a look at some economic impact numbers. During the year the research study was made, 28 million shopper visits were made to farmers’ markets.

On average, a customer will spend $32 per visit -- that’s a range from $24.50 at small markets to $35.50 at larger markets. Total farmers’ market direct sales across Canada is estimated to be approximately $1.03 billion. The national economic impact of farmer’s markets in the country is between $1.55 billion and $3.09 billion.

But, let’s not forget

Council News for the Town of Asquith for the Month of July Asquith Town Council held their July regular council meeting on July 11. Attending the meeting was Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors Sue Sawicki, Dylan Claypool, Jordan Claypool, Harold Edwards,Ted Goodnough and Jeff Eide. Also attending was C.A.O. Holly Cross and Administrative Assistant Kathy Picketts. Absent was Foreman Darren Kraft.

New Councillor Jeff Eide was sworn into Council.

Councillor Eide took the seat of Councillor by acclamation.

The June 13, 2018 council meeting minutes were accepted as presented.

A motion was made to accept the treasurer’s statement of receipts and expenditures for the month of June, along with the bank reconciliations for the month of June.

Resolution was made to accept the Accounts Paid in the amount of $80,256.20 and the Accounts Payable in the amount of $42,825.19. A motion was also made to make an interim payment to Goodon Industries for the new pole shed in the amount of $24,037.00.

Some letters were sent

out to residents who have nuisance properties, along with some letters being sent to individuals who are parking solely on the driving surfaces of roads, not the boulevards, which is against Bylaw No. 2/95. The Town Office would like to make all in Town aware that Bylaw No. 2/95, Sec. (e) (1) states, â€œâ€Śthe parking of vehicles is permitted only off the paved surface of all streets within the Town of Asquith.â€? For the most part residents are very good about using boulevards for parking, however there are a few that are utilizing paved surfaces for parking. This is dangerous and against the law. Continuation to do so could result in a fine or having your vehicle towed.

New Councillor Jeff Eide was appointed to the Utilities Committee and to the Streets and Town Property Committee.

A new pole shed has been built on the 100 block of Charles Street. This pole shed will provide some much- needed storage for the Town of Asquith. It will also allow Council to move all items stored at the Old Town Hall so that it can be put up for sale.

Exceed Asphalt did some hot mix patching around Town.

A work bee planned in July for turning the old rodeo grounds into a dog park was cancelled due to inclement weather. Another bee will be planned in August.

Unfortunately, the Town of Asquith is no longer accepting online payments from individuals who bank with the Bank of Montreal. They have joined TD and the Royal Bank in charging the Town to accept online payments. The Town of Asquith still accepts cash, cheques and debit payments, as well as E-Transfers. If you have any questions regarding E-Transfers, please do not hesitate to contact the Town Office.

The issue of dust control for Railway Avenue was discussed by Council.

There were many options for dust control, however most of the affordable options were not environmentally friendly and were corrosive. One option was for a product that was safe for humans and animals and environmentally friendly, however its price range made it unfeasible for

2018. Council resolved to include it in the 2019 budget to offer a reprieve for those residents who live along Railway Avenue.

Sometimes I wonder Often Y.T. feels a little empty when he reads some of our history books and finds so little in them about the individual personalities and ideas of O.G.s (Ordinary Guys!)

The local community histories, printed in the latter past of the last century, while being very good (and necessary, I think!) somehow seem to be lacking in that very personal “make-do” attitude so prevalent in the tougher times.

Sure those histories often tell of the many bigger more important

moves that people made in order to get along, and they often mention the notable things they have done, but that seemingly small, resourceful inventive contraptions that these same people made are often missing. Stuff like: “Jail at Eagle Creek”, a place that few people ever heard of.

Although RNWMP archives have no record of this post, Dad often told us of a Mounted Police outpost across the river somewhere near the mouth of Eagle Creek that boasted of a log-

Though the years the archaeologic people have pieced together a fairly complete history of what things were like out here thousands of years ago, and modern historians have catalogued quite a bit of our pioneering history, but sometimes I wonder about all the unrecorded little things that must have made up a part of their time.

A time when people out here made their own way and used their own brain to solve their own problems. And, it seems to me, a time that is slowly disappearing!

Mebbe the first few chapters of chronicles meant something to the ancients (I dunno!), but a record of the little personal things people made and did out here in the early days mean an awful lot more to us!

When I look through the old L and T of my own not so important life. I find many many entries that surely will be forgotten. “Lime Kiln by the River”, “Fish traps”, “Jim Dunbracks wagon wheels”, “Straw pig-pen” and “Canoe on the pasture slough”.

The people who have made something out of what they find around them, and faced up to their own problems are the ones responsible for civilization as we know it now.

It is up to the young people, I think, although when we were young we always said things like “When I get a little older”, never dreaming how much society can learn just by looking back!

There is increased risk of West Nile Virus in late July and August when the mosquitoes that carry the virus (Culex tarsalis) are most active and present in higher numbers. Currently, the risk is highest in southern Saskatchewan where positive pools of mosquitoes have been found for the past two weeks.

Most people who become infected with West Nile Virus expe-

rience no symptoms or have mild illness (fever, headaches, body aches).

“A small number of people develop a more serious illness called West Nile Virus neuroinvasive disease,” the province’s Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Saqib Shahab said. “If you develop serious symptoms like a persistent fever, confusion, neck stiffness or an unusually severe headache, seek medical attention immediately.”

Mosquitoes are most active on warm evenings and between dusk and dawn. Take precautions against getting bitten. Use

mosquito repellent, cover up and reduce the time spent outside when mosquitoes are most likely to bite. Maintain door and window screens so they fit tightly and are free of holes. Reduce mosquito habitat around your home and yard (such as standing water, old tires and other items that can collect water, bushes, shrubs, lawn overgrowth and debris).

So far this season, there has been one positive West Nile Virus lab test.

A positive lab test does not necessarily indicate a current WNV infection.

It is interesting to note China, a country where the population grows, is still a country where farmers have had small flocks of chickens. But, the country is working on moving away from small flocks to large scale operations, with a plan to produce millions of laying hens to a billion eggs a day. The numbers are staggering, but the Chinese population in 2016 was somewhere around 1.4 billion so the daily food requirements are equally massive.

The likelihood of freerun hens accomplishing a goal of one billion eggs a day would be a stretch at best.

Many speak different languages, represent different cultures and vary in age. This diversity creates a wonderful and enriching environment during events, with volunteers learning more about nature and each other.

And like our events, the volunteers all have one thing in common: a desire to help nature. Our volunteers come together to build a better future for Canadian landscapes and the species they sustain.

Since the program’s humble beginnings in 2006, the CV community has expanded. In addition to strengthening their connection to and with nature, volunteers have bonded over their shared appreciation for conserving landscapes now and for the future.

“NCC has provided me with a way to connect with the older generation in my community,” says Shannon Stewart, a Conservation Volunteer in Alberta. “They have so much knowledge to share.”

2018 Clubroot Survey The Ministry of Agriculture’s Clubroot Survey will help the province better understand the distribution and severity of clubroot in Saskatchewan. Op-Ed from Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe Last week, the Angus Reid Institute published a new national public opinion poll indicating that seven out of 10 Canadians believe the Government of Saskatchewan was right to challenge the Trudeau carbon tax in court, while two thirds of Canadians believe it should be the provinces - not Ottawa - that determine the appropriate path to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Two weeks ago, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced that Ontario would support Saskatchewan’s legal challenge of the Trudeau carbon tax by seeking intervenor status in our government’s reference case at the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal.

In declaring his support for Saskatchewan, Premier Ford was unequivocal, stating that Ontario would use every single tool at its disposal to challenge a carbon tax that

would make life unaffordable for families and put thousands of jobs at risk.

Three weeks ago, Prince Edward Island confirmed it is preparing a climate action plan that does not include a carbon tax or a cap and trade system.

PEI Environment Minister Richard Brown said: “If the objective is to reduce carbon in the air, and we have a plan to do that, then why do we need a tax?”

No doubt other provinces are asking the same question, as Ottawa’s September 1 deadline for carbon pricing proposals approaches.

So this is the situation we find our nation in: • Two or perhaps three provinces are in compliance with the federal carbon pricing plan • Two provinces are challenging the plan in court • And a number of the remaining provinces and territories will not be in

compliance come September The federal government would be well advised to take a step back to reassess and consider the withdrawal of its onesize-fits-all carbon tax and adopt a more collegial approach to addressing climate change.

This was the approach Prime Minister Trudeau espoused in March 2016 when he met with Canada’s Premiers in Vancouver to discuss climate change.

In Vancouver, the Prime Minister declared a willingness to work with the Premiers “in the spirit of cooperation and collaboration”.

Soon afterward, Ottawa unilaterally imposed a carbon tax, in a betrayal of those warm sentiments.

It’s time the federal government stepped back and took another look at what the provinces are actually doing to combat

Saskatchewan RCMP – 2017 Police-reported crime statistics (Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics)

The 2017 police-reported crime statistics released July 23 by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics reveal some positive trends, as well as some ongoing challenges in Saskatchewan RCMP jurisdiction areas.

The overall crime rate in Saskatchewan dropped in 2017 by 3%. Areas served by the RCMP saw overall crime decline by 3% as well, with property crime going down 5%. Homicides in RCMP detachment areas were also down from 35 in 2016 to 22 in 2017.

The Stats Canada numbers however, show firearms-related offences on the rise in Saskatchewan.

That is also reflected in the numbers in RCMP jurisdictions where firearms-related offences increased by 71%. While that is highly concerning to the RCMP, it is worth noting that we have started seeing a decline in those numbers through the first half of 2018.

Saskatchewan RCMP is working hard to be responsive to these challenges by focusing our efforts, targeting our resources and leveraging our partnerships:

·We are focusing on intelligence-led policing by collecting and analyzing information/data to conduct strategic patrols and deploy our resources as effectively and efficiently as possible. · Based on intelligence, we are targeting our enforcement to disrupt criminal activity and track prolific offenders. The Crime Reduction Team that was introduced in early 2018 has focused on this type of policing and has conducted multiple operations with encouraging results. In partnership with the Provincial government, this has led to the creation of two permanent CRTs beginning in September, 2018. · We continue to work with our law-enforcement partners through integrated street teams, combined forces teams and the newly-formed Provincial Protection and Response Team. Working with our Conservation Officer and Saskatchewan Highway Patrol partners, the PPRT is already making a positive impact on community safety. The RCMP also joined forces with other police services to conduct a Firearms

Amnesty program in the spring that helped get hundreds of firearms out of circulation. · We are working with our communities and other agencies to develop partnerships and programs to prevent and reduce crime. Over 100 Saskatchewan communities are either developing or already operating Rural Crime Watch or Citizens on Patrol programs.

While these efforts are proving effective, policing is only one part of the solution to crime problems. That is why community engagement is one of the RCMP’s top priorities. Detachments across the province conducted Town Hall meetings in 2018 to hear community safety concerns and develop long-term policing plans and priorities.

The RCMP is committed to working collaboratively with our partner agencies, local governments and community leaders to develop and implement strategies that will help address the root causes of crime and lead to stronger, safer and healthier communities.

In Saskatchewan, we have released a climate change plan – Prairie Resilience – that will lead to a real reduction in greenhouse gas emissions without a carbon tax that would cost our province’s energy intensive, exportoriented economy $4 billion over five years.

In Saskatchewan, we are in the process of doubling our renewable power to 50 per cent of our electrical generating capacity, in part by working with First Nations on innovative projects.

We have invested more than a billion dollars in the world’s first commercial power plant with a fully integrated post combustion carbon capture system – the Boundary Dam 3 project (BD3).

BD3 has captured more than two million tonnes of carbon dioxide – the equivalent of taking 500,000 cars off the road.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) has been identified as a crucial technology to reduce emissions by the United Nations, the International Energy Agency and a number of

environmental groups.

Saskatchewan is a world leader in advancing this important technology.

This should be recognized by the federal government.

We are devising an offset system that will recognize our province as a carbon sink and a research leader in agriculture.

Carbon intensity in agriculture has been reduced in part because of research undertaken in our province, in genetics, agronomy, and in zero till technology that sequesters carbon in the soil.

In Saskatchewan, we manufacture air drills and export them to Russia, Kazakhstan, throughout Europe, the United States and Australia.

These Saskatchewanmade air drills are reducing greenhouse gas emissions around the world.

At home, more than 70 per cent of our land is cultivated using zero till technology.

Meanwhile, the production of pulse crops in Saskatchewan has soared, from 400,000 acres in 1990 to six million acres today.

We are one of the world’s leading exporters of lentils, peas and chickpeas, crops that fix nitrogen, use less fertilizer, and therefore have a lower carbon footprint.

Saskatchewan’s agricultural soils are an enormous carbon sink, sequestering millions of tonnes of CO2 every year.

This, too, should be recognized by the federal government.

As should the millions of tonnes of emissions offset by Saskatchewan uranium used to produce nuclear power in the United States and Asia.

Saskatchewan industries – Canadian industries – are more environmentally responsible and operate more sustainably than many of their competitors around the world.

If we really want to lower emissions, we should encourage Canadians to purchase sustainablyproduced Canadian products.

And we should give the provinces the freedom to develop climate change polices that actually work, without a federal carbon tax.

Think a police officer canʼt tell if youʼre driving stoned? Think again!

Sound familiar? There are plenty of misconceptions floating around regarding marijuana use and driving. The truth is that it’s illegal and will continue to be illegal in Saskatchewan to drive while impaired – whether by drugs or alcohol – even once marijuana use becomes legal in Canada on Oct. 17, 2018.

Think about it: people don’t smoke marijuana so they can feel the exact same. It is an impairing substance that alters your perception – and it increases your chances of being in a crash.

“To put it simply, impaired is impaired,” said Penny McCune, Chief Operating Officer of the Auto Fund. “Any substance that alters your thinking will impact your ability to drive safely. If you smoke marijuana, you should not get behind the wheel until you’re sure the effects have fully

worn off.”

Smoking marijuana affects judgment, reaction time, motor coordination and ability to make decisions. It can also cause paranoia, drowsiness, distorted perception and a sense of disorientation – all of which could cause you to lose control at the wheel. Mixing drugs and alcohol increases impairment even more.

If you think police won’t be able to tell if you’re driving while high, think again. Weaving within a lane, following a vehicle too closely, making unsafe turns – these can all be indications that a driver is high. Marijuana can also be detected by odor and by the driver’s physical appearance – including dilated pupils, poor balance and co-ordination.

If the police suspect that a driver is impaired by a drug or alcohol or a combination of both, they can make a demand that the driver take a standardized field sobriety test at roadside. If the officer has reasonable grounds to believe that a driver is

impaired by a drug, they can make a demand that the driver submit to an evaluation conducted by a Drug Recognition Evaluator (DRE).

“Drug Recognition Evaluators undergo extensive training and use a rigorous, scientific 12-step procedure in performing the evaluation,” said Cpl. Brian Ferguson, Provincial DRE Training Coordinator. “The evaluation must show impairment, signs and symptoms consistent with one or more drug categories, and the evaluator’s findings must be supported by the toxicology.”

More and more police in Saskatchewan are being trained to recognize signs of impairment from drugs. There are currently 74 DRE-certified officers in the province, with 20 to 40 new officers trained each year.

But will these tests hold up in court? Absolutely.

by Canadian courts as legally binding evidence in impaired driving cases for many years.

So, don’t drive high. It’s not worth it and you’re going to get caught.

Impaired drivers in Saskatchewan face some of the toughest administrative sanctions in the country, with immediate licence suspensions and vehicle seizures at roadside. Upon conviction, further penalties imposed by the courts may include fines, jail time and longterm driving restrictions.

Follow these tips to keep you and yours safe: • Be a Good Wingman – don’t let impaired friends drive.

• Don’t drive high – weed increases your chances

of getting into a collision and when combined with alcohol, impairment increases significantly.

• Plan a safe ride home – impaired driving is 100% preventable.

• Remember – it is illegal to operate any kind of motor vehicle while impaired by any substance. Police are trained to check for and recognize drug impairment.

November 22, 1958 - July 22, 2018 Rob was born in Rosetown, Sask. on November N No ove v m 22, 1958. He was wa w as raised on a farm in the Anglia district in where he farmed w with his family. w Through hard work and with callloused hands, Rob was a “jack-of-allw trades”.

No job was ttr ra to big or too small. In to 1981, 1 19 981 he married Leona Olson and they raised their O family of three. Welding was what Rob sent most of his time on; however, he loved to travel, go to the lake and spend time with his grandchildren. Although Rob lived too short of a life, he had many accomplishments and leaves with us his wisdom and good memories.

Rob is survived by his wife, Leona of 37 years; daughters, Jenny and Lisa; and son, Adam; seven grandchildren, Savanah, Dawson, Leelila, Tysen, Sophis, Levi and Gracie; sisters, Betty ad Louise; and a brother, Murray; and numerous loving nieces and nephew and extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Pauline Green; and a sister, Bonnie.

A Celebration of Life was held on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. from Biggar New Horizons Hall, Biggar, Sask.

Active Bearers were Adam Green, Richard Olson, Murray Green, Brian Jackson, Wayne Broeckl, Ken Oliver. Interment followed in Biggar Cemetery, Biggar, Sask.

My Top 10 Barbecuing Tips Summer is well underway now and if you haven’t dusted off your outdoor grill yet, you are missing out on a very flavourful lifestyle. So, in honour of the Kings & Queens of the backyard barbecue, the ones that struggle with it, and everyone in between, I give you my Top 10 Barbecuing Tips.

Charcoal – Mentioned in my previous column, this is my #1 Tip. Cooking with this natural fuel of carbonized wood adds such a depth of flavour to everything from burgers to desserts. I am not talking manufactured square-shaped “briquettes” here; I am talking about lump charcoal: chunks of wood that have been heated with very little to no oxygen, so they naturally carbonize. According to archeological expeditions, we as humans have been cooking with this fuel for thousands of years, so this is the oldest known form of fuel to humankind.

Internal Meat Thermometer – Use one. This is the only way to accurately prevent overcooking or undercooking any piece of meat.

Sauces are not Marinades – If you slather on Barbecue sauce before your meat is cooked, the high sugar content in these sauces will burn.

Sauces are meant to be glazes at the end of the cooking process. When your food is about a minute or two from being done, spread some sauce on, close the lid, and let it glaze onto your food.

Never Clean Your Grill – Now when I say “grill” I am talking about your cooking grate/grid. The worst thing you can do is take your grid to the sink and scrub it down with soapy water. All you need to do is take a grill brush to it when it is hot after the preheating of your grill to knock off any food residue from your previous grilling escapade. This will help to keep your grid sea-

soned and non-stick.

Always Preheat - Ensuring your grill is extremely hot will not only burn off any residual food bits from your last cookout, it will also guarantee great crust formation (and grill lines) on your food.

Oil the Meat - Oiling Chef Dez the meat in advance will not only help to enhance the crusting process (and the resulting increase in flavour), it will also assist in creating a non-stick environment. I always oil the meat before seasoning with salt and pepper just prior to going onto a hot preheated grill. If you are fully coating with a dry rub however, oiling won’t be necessary and the dry rub will help prevent sticking.

Oil the Grates/Grids – This tip is more for delicate pieces of meat or fish. In combination of oiling the meat, this will also help in flavour creation and ease of

Harvest begins for some Sask. farmers Harvest operations are underway for some producers in the south, according to Saskatchewan Agriculture’s weekly Crop Report for the July 24 to 30 period.

Crops are rapidly drying down across the province and many pulse crops are being desiccated. Most crops remain in fair to excellent condition, although laterseeded crops need rain to help heads and pods fill. Reported yields so far range from average to well-below average, depending on field and moisture conditions.

Most areas of the province did not receive any rain last week, although the Arborfield area reported 22 millimetres and the Macklin area 20 millimetres. Many southern and central areas have not received significant moisture for well over a month, and any future rainfall may be of limited benefit since most southern crops are

release. This should be done with an oil that has a high smoke point. This is not an application for your extra virgin olive oil. Grapeseed oil would be perfect, but a canola or vegetable oil will work fine. Oiling the grates/ grids however should be done once they have been preheated. Protecting your hand with a grill mitt, dab some oil on a cloth and quickly, but efficiently, wipe down the hot grills. Be careful not to have the cloth soaking with oil to the point that would cause flare-ups. A light coating of oil will work fine.

Leave It Alone - Once the meat has been placed on the grill, the worst thing you could do is to prematurely break that contact of meat with grill. Even with following the above rules religiously, the meat will stick… at first. Leaving it alone allows it to create a crust (grill marks) and thus helping to release it from the cooking surface. If you are following the rules above and your meat is stuck to the grill, chances are it is trying to tell you that it is not ready to be flipped yet.

Topsoil moisture conditions have worsened since last week due to the lack of rain and hot temperatures. Provincial topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are currently rated as 39 per cent adequate, 43 per cent short and 18 per cent very short.

Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 33 per cent adequate, 39 per cent short and 28 per cent very short.

The majority of crop damage this past week is attributed to lack of moisture, strong wind and high temperatures.

There have been some reports of grasshoppers in the south. Haying is wrapping up for some livestock producers and yields remain significantly lower than normal. Pasture conditions are currently rated as two per cent excellent, 25 per cent good, 37 per cent fair, 26 per cent poor and 10 per cent very poor.

Try Something New – This may be the best piece of advice. Let’s break away from the old standbys of hamburgers and hotdogs and try something new and different. There are so many ideas on the internet and in your cookbook collection that can easily liven up your next backyard cooking adventure.

protect light-meat poultry and lean pork. This is a technique that involves soaking in a salt-water solution for a period of time prior to cooking.

Not only does this add moisture to the centre of the meat, but also seasoning, as the salt saturated water is drawn in.

A simple brining formula would be: one quarter cup salt dissolved in 4 cups of water for pieces of poultry or lean pork.

Let the meat sit in the brine for 1 hour in the refrigerator. Remove from the brine, pat them dry, and cook as you normally would. This brining process will provide a moisture protection shield to help keep fully cooked meats juicy.

However, this is only a safeguard – overcooking is still possible, but this lessens the chance. The
